The Selma March And The Voting Rights Movement
Around the 1950s, there was a large struggle for African Americans to vote. The main issues were
barriers to voting. Alabama was one example of severe obstacles for voting. Literacy tests were
mandatory for being allowed to vote and often led to discrimination as test proctors would give harder
questions to those they disfavored. Poll taxes meant lower income citizens could not vote. Black
Americans often lived far away from voting centers so restrictions were placed on transportation so
they could not have a chance of voting. These conditions led to a small minority of African Americans
that could actually vote. Demonstrations began by two groups of civil right advocates, Southern
Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and Student Nonviolent ... Show more content on

Social structures, such as the police and government, and representation, such as people who actively
opposed the movement, were contested with success as the result was a big jump for civil rights by the
Voting Rights Act. The march concluded with the ensured ability to vote for African Americans, which
meant justice was achieved. However, while the march overall the Selma March seemed just, there
was disagreement between SNCC and SCLC. Both groups knew that there was injustice being done as
a result of the voting laws in Alabama, but their leaders had a different approach to solving the issue.
SCLC wanted to maintain the idea of peaceful protest while SCLC was more active in their movement
and promoted civil disobedience. While the march was successful in showing the nation needed to
reform its voting legislation, there were many injuries and some deaths associated with the events of
the march. These deaths and injuries were unjust as they were a result of unjust ideologies. To achieve
justice, the SCLC s method of peaceful protest may have been a viable option as opposed to checking
demonstrations and marches which had

Zora Neale Hurston Influence
Many writers allow their personal experiences to influence their writing, but Zora Neale Hurston used
her life to influence others. Hurston took her personal experience and used it to show impoverished
black youth that they can be successful. The way she was raised influenced her and created a woman
who would pave the way for feminists to be recognized as a respectable group. Hurston had a way
with words that still, to this day, have an affect on youth and will affect future generations.. Her
childhood and her introduction to average American society developed Hurston into a preacher of
equal rights, a teacher of confidence, and a writer ahead of her time.

Hurston intended to show the beauty and wealth of genuine Negro material as a response to the
stereotyping of black people in literature (Draper 1068 1069). Sykes is shown as a successful
independent black man which was something not seen often in Hurston s time. Her material mainly
focused on black and black relations over black and white relations. By focusing on the successful
side of black life that she grew up with, Hurston was able to show black youth a potential future for
themselves that they may not have thought possible with their current situation. Condemning those
who oppressed African Americans and defying traditional norms was Hurston s way of disrupting the
social climate of the time (Champion). In her works, she was able to shine a light on societal problems
that she believed needed fixing. Literature was the only way to fight because as a black woman she
had no other ways to fight without incarceration. Hurston intended to present the side of black people
that many white people did not see, her writings were important because they...[presented] characters
who...[were] undeniably and realistically human (Draper 1068). Hurston had to provide realistic black
characters in a time that black people were still seen as worthless by many. She wanted people to
understand that white people and black people were just people. Hurston wrote good characters, not
good people, to show that all races of people had bad eggs. The characters in Sweat were very
realistic, whether they be gossiping on the porch or abusing their wife, they are acting as real people
do. They may not be doing things that are morally right, i.e. being abusive, but that is a fault in
humanity that all races are guilty of. Hurston had seen many different types of people throughout her
life and was able to express these different personalities with expertise. Knowing how to write a
character is just as important as

Emmett Till Research Paper
How would you feel if you were accused for something that you didn t even do? For instance, Emmett
Till. He was a 14 year old boy who was born on July 25, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
While he was visiting his family in Money, Mississippi, he was dreadfully murdered for flirting with a
white woman while he was at the market buying gum. In this essay, we will discuss the tragic death of
Emmett Till and the impact that he created. While Emmett was getting gum from the market, he was
bragging to his friends about how he had a white girlfriend back in Chicago. Then as he went in the
store and got some gum the lady behind the counter, Carolyn Bryant, accused Emmett for whistling at
her and saying bye baby . But when it all happened there was not a single witnesses there it was only
emmett and Carolyn who were in the market and no one else. Despite the fact that she accused an
innocent 14 year old boy for whistling and saying bye baby to her was terrible because of what she did
she ended up getting an innocent teenager killed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Militarization of the Gulf Cooperation Council to Deter Threats
How Fear Shapes the Future of the Region
Introduction:
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Peninsula Shield Force expresses the principle to protect
against any political turmoil or security infringement in any GCC part state. The Peninsula Shield
Force depends on the standard of group and coordinated security and barrier, with each GCC part state
promising to ensure and protect the common security and interests of GCC part states, and their
domain and jurisdiction.
One of the principle targets behind the foundation of the GCC in 1981 was security from the danger
postured by the Iran Iraq War, and Iranian propelled Islamist activism. The GCC Peninsula Shield
Force was made up of joint military strengths from GCC part states. The GCC Peninsula Shield Force
set up its home office in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia in 1985.
After the Second Gulf War in 1990 91, the GCC Peninsula Shield Force tried to improve its safeguard
abilities, with GCC part states setting up bound together operational strategies, preparing, and military
educational module. Notwithstanding this, the Peninsula Shield Force started to complete joint
military activities and moves with all GCC state militaries. The Peninsula Shield Force today holds
joint preparing practices at regular intervals with one of the Gulf s militaries. Another essential
accomplishment was the determination taken

Premodern Childhood
The interest in the examination of childhood as a scholastic field was sparked by the seminal work of
medievalist historian Philippe Ariès (1914 84). Ariès suggests that premodern childhood was a time of
neglect and abuse since high mortality rates prevented people from forging close bonds with their
children. It is for this reason, children were thought as being at the bottom of the social scale and
therefore unworthy of consideration. Ariès can be quoted as saying from his 1962 pioneering
publication Centuries of Childhood ....that in a premodern age, especially that before the seventeenth
century, that childhood did not exist. In a medieval society, the idea of childhood did not exist...[the]
awareness of the particular nature which distinguishes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These theories are reinforced by the impression that during this period, children were modeled to be
little adults ; viewed nothing more than economic assets as opposed to symbols of love. This can be
seen visually throughout the sixteenth century in portraiture of children with their parents, who were
stylized similarly to their parents and/or depicted to possess adult like features. While Ariès work is
viewed as a principle text in the studies of childhood, Italian Renaissance scholars such as Linda
Pollock, Louis Haas, Jacqueline Mussachio, and Christiane Klapisch Zuber refute these claims, stating
that ...childhood was viewed as a discrete part of domestic life, portioned off from adulthood; as a
time of innocence and play; a stage in life in which a child is shielded by parents to the harsh realities
of adulthood . Alberti s Quattro libri della famiglia and Louis Haas 1998 book The Renaissance Man
and his children: Childbirth and Early Childhood in Renaissance Florence 1300 1600 both seem to
concede to Ariès claims, but Mussachio, Linda Pollock s Forgotten Children: Parent Child relations
from 1500 1900, and Christiane Klapisch Zuber s 1987 publication Women, Family, and Ritual in
Renaissance Italy point out numerous issues with

unrealistic events in their ad. For example, it showed Orlando Magic s superstar Aaron Gordon getting

The lighting used was to make sure it seemed like you were watching the actual sporting event. There
were many different surroundings in each of the clips but they always emphasized the athlete. There
were a wide range of colors used in this ad depending on what scenery they were at. Each sporting

Impact Of Mexican Cuisine On National Identity
The Impact of Mexican Cuisine on National Identity Authentic, traditional Mexican food is thought to
be a product that was developed by the Mayan Indians. Food was first hunted and gathered so that it
was then cooked on ceramic pots or iron skillets over open fires. This ritual was fundamental for the
natives. They needed to obtain their food and prepare it in this way so that they could eat. This
exemplifies the idea that the preparation of food is not only symbolic of having a meal to eat, but also
of nature being transformed into culture. Additionally, everyone has a deep personal connection with
the simple act of eating because what one person prefers to eat might be different for another
individual. As individuals, we are each born into a culture that most likely has a cuisine different from
what others prefer or are accustomed to. All of our palates are distinctly unique. To provide an
example of the aforementioned, the Spanish invaded Mexico in the 16th century, and they brought
along with them their own kinds of foods, with wheat holding a particular importance. The Spaniards
made attempts so that Mexicans too would have the same liking to wheat as they did, but the reality
was that Mexico had a strong attachment to corn. And while the introduction of wheat caused corn to
be thought of as nutrient deficient, Porfirian intellectual elites later found that their maize was as
equally healthy. Food matters, especially in the context of Mexico. It had always been

I Will Revisit Russon s Definition Of Memory, And Three...
In this paper I will revisit Russon s definition of memory, and three of the aspects that he presents as
important in the memory process. I will also argue that our body play an important role for our
remembering, as does the objects we interact with. As well as present my position on Russon
description of memory demonstrating that Russon s description is indeed relatable to the actual human
experience. Russon s definition of memory is not subjected to one main idea, but rather an
intertwining of related ideas pertaining to experience. He views memory as, What we experience as
the determinateness of objects that communicates to us what we can and cannot do, (Russon 41). To
emphasize, we experience our world through interactions with the world s objects. The contact made
with these objects provides an identity for them that later communicates to us about ourselves. Russon
present this idea of memory based on two types of memory, implicit and explicit. Implicit memory are
memories that we remember in part, while explicit memory are those that we remember completely.
An example that Russon gives in another instance that connects to this is the idea of him terminating
his lease and having a few weeks remaining is inscribed in everything within his apartment. Each
object represents the identity of the future commitment of moving whether pervasively or
occasionally. However Russon thinks that for us to remember there are certain aspects that needs to be

Virtue Ethics And The Moral Life
Virtue ethics is concerned with the traits of character that make one a good person. Virtue ethics seems
to be more personal because it is not about choosing which side of an issue one would prefer to take
part in, but the kind of person one wants to be. A virtuous person is considered to be a morally good
person, and virtues are good traits. For virtue ethics, the moral life is about developing good character.
Aristotle was one of the earliest writers to ground morality in nature, and specifically in human nature.
For Aristotle, virtue was an excellence of some sort. According to Aristotle, there are two types of
virtues: intellectual virtues and moral virtues. Intellectual virtues are excellences of the mind, such as
the ability to understand, reason, and judge well. These traits can be learned from teachers. Moral
virtues on the other hand, dispose us to act well. These virtues cannot be taught, and they are learned
by repetition. Aristotle s list of virtues includes courage, temperance, justice, pride, and magnanimity.
However Aristotle is probably most well known for his position that virtue is a mean between
extremes. For example courage is to be understood as a mean between the two extremes of deficiency
and excess. Too little courage is cowardice, and too much is foolhardiness. When we concern
ourselves with virtue ethics I don t think that there are any virtues that can be universalized because
the character traits apply mainly to individuals. Some may say that

Increased Rates of Teen Pregnancy among Minorities
Increased rates of teen pregnancy among minorities The incidence of teen births in the United States
has reached a historic all time low throughout the last couple of years but teen girls are still giving
birth to 1700 babies a week. However, minorities are still amongst the highest group of teenagers
having children among the age group between 15 and 19 years of age. The highest ethnic groups were
comprised of Hispanics and Non Hispanic blacks making up 57% of all US teen births in 2011,
according to a study done by the CDC in 2011. American Indians and Alaskan Natives had the third
highest birth rates at about 36 births per 1000 females. The smallest occurrence of teen births per 1000
came from the Asian/Pacific Islander population. However, the continuously low population group
with teen pregnancies involved White individuals so the question remains, why are most minority
groups more likely to give birth within their teenage years? Research shows that about 80 percent of
all the teenagers between the age group of 15 17 had no formal sexual education before their first
sexual experience. Regardless of their ethnicity, all students can be affected by the lack of sexual
education at their respected school. Interestingly enough, President Obama has recently cut the budget
for abstinence only sex education. However, this was done because current research indicates that
abstinence only programs do not prevent or delay teen sex. Many teens say that their schools tend to

Elizabeth Bowen s The Demon Lover
World War II raged around the world, but the people of London faced it on their doorsteps. The
Blitzkrieg destroyed not only the cities buildings but affected the people who lived there. Elizabeth
Bowen, a native of the city, used the devastation to draw, inspiration from her own traumatic
experiences ( The Home Front ). This inspiration manifested itself into the 1945 short story The
Demon Lover. The Demon Lover is full of a variety of elements meant to create an ambiguous view

Murillo s Representations of Seville
Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was a Spanish Baroque painter born in Seville in late December of 1617.
While many of his contemporaries would leave their native lands to seek commissions elsewhere,
Murillo stayed true to his roots and remained in Seville for most of his life, with the exception of two
short stays in Madrid: one from 1642 1645 and the other for several months in 1658. While these
excursions particularly the first played a noteworthy role in the development of his personal style,
Murillo ultimately chose to found his Academy of Painting in his hometown. Murillo was a prolific
and talented painter who acquired numerous followers as well as international recognition during his
artistic career. He is best known for his religious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the age of fifteen, he began training in the studio of Juan del Castillo, a Venetian influenced
Sevillian painter who went on to only be recognized in history as the teacher of Murillo. In 1642,
Murillo took the money that he had earned by making crude tempera paintings called sargas and
moved to Madrid, where he studied the works of Titian, Rubens, and Van Dyck. He even had the
opportunity to study with Velázquez for a short time, though Murillo never ended up doing royal court
art. He received his first commission in 1645 from the Convent of San Francisco, and he ascended to
become one of the predominant painters of his city over the course of the 1650s. This increased
renown was fueled by a commission to create paintings for the Seville Cathedral. In 1648, Murillo

Competitive Advantages Of Competitive Advantage
Competitive advantage literally is the ability to sustain profits that exceed the average for the industry
through developing distinctive competencies: distinctive, because the competitors don t have them and
because they are fundamentally difficult to replicate (Berry, 2012). Competitive advantage through
people is critical for a business to succeed. Without people, businesses would lack the ability to have
the innovations to differentiate their products or services from their contenders in the same field of
interest. People are critical from in developing and producing the product or service for the company
to drive customer satisfaction. John C. Maxwell of the Philippine Daily Inquirer suggests that there are
three C s that develop a competitive advantage. Competition is the first one which consists of a
business opponents and the market share to compete against for the best product and service with a
lower cost. Next are the challenges. These challenges include economic handicaps that a business can
face such as scarce resources. Naturally people fear change. With change, leadership needs to move
people to leave a burning building and move in the right direction in which the company needs to. It
can be uncomfortable for some, but critical to advance beyond their competitors. The third is
connectivity that companies must be in tune with. Within an organization, even a small one, work
teams can become isolated from one another. When that happens,

Prosecutions In Victorian London
Prosecutions in Victorian London By:Justice Crawford
Over two hundred years ago in Victorian London, merchants would cut thieves fingers off for stealing
fruit from their market. In the early nineteenth century, court conditions and the treatment of both the
victim and the accused was very different from today. Trials in court were often very quick.
Prosecutors, judges and jurors had more power and choice. Punishments varied based on the criminals
social class and gender. If the accuser was pleaded guilty it would be nearly impossible to plead their
innocence even if there was significant evidence. The Victorians were very distraught about crime.

Since whites were the settlers of London they had more privileges than immigrants and blacks. In the
article, Victorian London written by David Ross, Ross explains the life of a regular citizen in Victorian
London. During the time where immigrants and blacks migrated to London, whites started to make
their own local police force called Bobbies . On page 12, Ross writes In 1829 Sir Robert Peel founded
the Metropolitan Police to handle law and order in areas outside the City proper. These police became
known as Bobbies after their founder. The early part of the 19th century was the golden age of steam.
The first railway in London was built from London Bridge to Greenwich in 1836, and a great railway
boom followed. Major stations were built at Euston (1837), Paddington (1838), Fenchurch Street
(1841), Waterloo (1848), and King s Cross (1850). This quote says that with the help of slaves and
workers London built wonderful attractions such as the Paddington and King s Cross. Also on page
15, it says The workers in London were not only facing competition from their fellow countrymen, but
also from people across Europe like the Irish and the Jewish, who came to London to find jobs. The
19th century London was the world s largest city and a political, economic and trading capital of

Wilfred Owen Speech
Good morning Turkish citizens, war veterans and fellow Australians, we gather here at this hour to
commemorate the 100 Year anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign. Those of you out there I m sure
you can agree when I say War is sweet for those who haven t experienced it. , the media showcasing it
to the people as a heroic gesture that generally is executed by people risking their lives for their
country. But it s so much more than that. Some of you out there might disagree, no no, war is nothing
but a little game played by men who want to dish out the hero card, and nothing more than that. But

It runs off sadness, fear and denial. It also brings up a very strong feeling of independence,
demonstrated by the female protagonist. Throughout the first 30 seconds of the video, there s a
transition of her comforting another lady to a picture of her husband, which had the rosary beads
draped on top of it. It s almost a metaphor that represents what she s afraid will come of her husband
on the battlefield, showing the gnawing anxiety that she must have been forced to endure each passing
day. The non diegetic music, which played during the montage, was to evoke emotion that was

Complications Of Compensation
In a cross country analysis by Tessema, Ready Embaye, (2013), they presented statistics on the effects
of employee recognition, pay, and benefits on job satisfaction to employees in USA, Malaysi, and
Vietnam. While there are significant differences statistically between the four variables of the study,
all groups concurred that pay, benefits, and recognition are vital in improving job satisfaction of
employees. The results solidify the hypothesis that pay is integral to job satisfaction in all of the three
countries despite varying cultures. It is important to take note that this study also revealed that non

White and Blue Eyed: Pecola s idea of beauty. Pecola: Black and brown eyes. Attractive and

Should scientists be allowed to use genetic techniques to bring back extinct species?
There are 2 sides to this argument but as long as the genetic techniques wisely and safely it would be

Terracotta Warriors Research Paper
The Terracotta Warriors are thousands of individual hand crafted terracotta soldiers and horses. They
are lined up in rows, placed underground near China s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang s tomb. The
Warriors were made to accompany Qin Shi Huang in the afterlife, as he believed that they could be
animated. The Terracotta warriors are very significant to the Chinese culture as they show in great
detail, how the military was back then and the amazing craftsmanship of the ancient Chinese.
The Terracotta army was built in around 210 BCE and there are an estimated 8000 warriors, chariots
and horses, all suposedly serving Qin Shi Huang in his afterlife. The warriors were built to acompony
him so he could keep the same military power and imperial status, as he believed that the statues

an estimated 700,000 workers the warriors and tomb took around 40 years to build. He believed that

College Plays An Important Part Of Social Reproduction
College plays an immensely essential part in social reproduction. Most social reproduction theorists
and working class citizens this day in age would agree that A well educated workforce is vital to our
nation s future economic growth and competitiveness (Treasury, Education dept.). College also serves
as one of the main tools used in reaching milestones throughout one s life. Many experiences are made
as well as relationships and colleagues. Though institutions are making it much harder for those
earning wages under the median income line to acquire an education that will provide them careers
that will open doors and present new opportunities in their future, it is nevertheless the most sure shot
pathway to success. Providing education to those who really cannot afford it will give them jobs, so
their children and future generations under them will never have to worry about paying for college,
giving more of motivation for those students to continue reaching their goals. The role that college
plays in social reproduction is providing opportunities to those who will want to bestow those same
opportunities unto their children. In contrast to generations of the past, high school graduates today
seem to be incapable of receiving the number of high paying jobs that were once available around the
years of 1930 1970 in the United States without a college degree of any sort. The U.S. has since been

Snow Blower Persuasive Speech
Well, we ve decided to get a snow blower. Before we run off and place our order, there are several

snow blowers, referred to as single stage and two stage. Single stage are more light duty and not
recommended for regions that expect more than an eight inch snowfall and even then, they may not be
useful if the snow is wet. Now on to single stage and two stage snow blowers. The heart of a snow

The First Great Awakening And The Age Of Enlightenment
Throughout history, literature has served as a prominent tool in the examination of social values,
ideas, and dreams. In addition, literature has provided a vital connection between historical, social,
and political events. Through the incorporation of religious principles and philosophies, writers have
discovered a way to portray different time periods, characters, feelings, and most importantly God.
As the Age of Enlightenment gradually came to an end, the British American colonists were ready to
progress beyond the ideology of human reason and depend solely on biblical revelation. During the
eighteenth century, a great movement known as the First Great Awakening swept through Protestant
Europe and America, leaving a permanent impact on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, new light preachers gradually began preaching democratic messages which helped make

helped establish four educational institutions: Princeton University, Brown University, Dartmouth
College, and Rutgers University (Britannica). Lastly, from a religious aspect, the Great Awakening
brought a great division between many religious denominations, resulting in the splitting of old light
and new light preachers.
One of the most influential writers and new light preachers was Jonathan Edwards. Edwards was born
into an Orthodox family on October 5th, 1703, in the city of East Windsor, Connecticut. As a child,
Jonathan Edwards had constant exposure to the teachings of the Bible and Christian theology, as well
as having the opportunity to learn a variety of languages such as Greek and Latin (University).
Throughout his childhood, Edwards received an adequate and excellent education from his father and
ten sisters, so that he could be prepared to attend college and earn his undergraduate and graduate
degrees in philosophy and theology. Furthermore, when Edwards was only eleven years old, he wrote
his first piece of scientific literature titled Flying Spider, in which he accurately portrayed scientific

countries including the United States. These rubber bullets can be shot from a standard police

hits an object it flattens out in order to cause no permanent damage. Rubber bullets travel up to 950

people describe the pain as being hit with a baseball bat (Norman). Although not intended to be deadly

when it comes down to controlling hostile crowds, rubber bullets are the most effective and instant

Leadership Styles Of Captain William Bligh
Compare and Contrast the Leadership Styles of Captain William Bligh verses Lieutenant Fletcher
Christian.
The topic of leadership evokes curiosity about our leaders and their approaches in decision making,
leadership styles and the effectiveness of their leadership. At time leaders are critiqued for their
actions or views on different business affairs. In today s working environment leaders set the tone,
vision, and goals of any organization. Leadership has a huge impact on the culture of an organization

should inspire and positively impact their followers. The approach of leaders in handling adversities
highlights many features of their character.

Captain William Bligh (Captain Bligh) and Lt. Fletcher Christian (Christian) who were the two main

  • 2. The Selma March And The Voting Rights Movement Around the 1950s, there was a large struggle for African Americans to vote. The main issues were barriers to voting. Alabama was one example of severe obstacles for voting. Literacy tests were mandatory for being allowed to vote and often led to discrimination as test proctors would give harder questions to those they disfavored. Poll taxes meant lower income citizens could not vote. Black Americans often lived far away from voting centers so restrictions were placed on transportation so they could not have a chance of voting. These conditions led to a small minority of African Americans that could actually vote. Demonstrations began by two groups of civil right advocates, Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and Student Nonviolent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social structures, such as the police and government, and representation, such as people who actively opposed the movement, were contested with success as the result was a big jump for civil rights by the Voting Rights Act. The march concluded with the ensured ability to vote for African Americans, which meant justice was achieved. However, while the march overall the Selma March seemed just, there was disagreement between SNCC and SCLC. Both groups knew that there was injustice being done as a result of the voting laws in Alabama, but their leaders had a different approach to solving the issue. SCLC wanted to maintain the idea of peaceful protest while SCLC was more active in their movement and promoted civil disobedience. While the march was successful in showing the nation needed to reform its voting legislation, there were many injuries and some deaths associated with the events of the march. These deaths and injuries were unjust as they were a result of unjust ideologies. To achieve justice, the SCLC s method of peaceful protest may have been a viable option as opposed to checking demonstrations and marches which had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Zora Neale Hurston Influence Many writers allow their personal experiences to influence their writing, but Zora Neale Hurston used her life to influence others. Hurston took her personal experience and used it to show impoverished black youth that they can be successful. The way she was raised influenced her and created a woman who would pave the way for feminists to be recognized as a respectable group. Hurston had a way with words that still, to this day, have an affect on youth and will affect future generations.. Her childhood and her introduction to average American society developed Hurston into a preacher of equal rights, a teacher of confidence, and a writer ahead of her time. Hurston grew up very differently from other black children in her time. She was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hurston intended to show the beauty and wealth of genuine Negro material as a response to the stereotyping of black people in literature (Draper 1068 1069). Sykes is shown as a successful independent black man which was something not seen often in Hurston s time. Her material mainly focused on black and black relations over black and white relations. By focusing on the successful side of black life that she grew up with, Hurston was able to show black youth a potential future for themselves that they may not have thought possible with their current situation. Condemning those who oppressed African Americans and defying traditional norms was Hurston s way of disrupting the social climate of the time (Champion). In her works, she was able to shine a light on societal problems that she believed needed fixing. Literature was the only way to fight because as a black woman she had no other ways to fight without incarceration. Hurston intended to present the side of black people that many white people did not see, her writings were important because they...[presented] characters who...[were] undeniably and realistically human (Draper 1068). Hurston had to provide realistic black characters in a time that black people were still seen as worthless by many. She wanted people to understand that white people and black people were just people. Hurston wrote good characters, not good people, to show that all races of people had bad eggs. The characters in Sweat were very realistic, whether they be gossiping on the porch or abusing their wife, they are acting as real people do. They may not be doing things that are morally right, i.e. being abusive, but that is a fault in humanity that all races are guilty of. Hurston had seen many different types of people throughout her life and was able to express these different personalities with expertise. Knowing how to write a character is just as important as ... One of the principle targets behind the foundation of the GCC in 1981 was security from the danger postured by the Iran Iraq War, and Iranian propelled Islamist activism. • 10. Premodern Childhood The interest in the examination of childhood as a scholastic field was sparked by the seminal work of medievalist historian Philippe Ariès (1914 84). Ariès suggests that premodern childhood was a time of neglect and abuse since high mortality rates prevented people from forging close bonds with their children. It is for this reason, children were thought as being at the bottom of the social scale and therefore unworthy of consideration. Ariès can be quoted as saying from his 1962 pioneering publication Centuries of Childhood ....that in a premodern age, especially that before the seventeenth century, that childhood did not exist. These theories are reinforced by the impression that during this period, children were modeled to be little adults ; viewed nothing more than economic assets as opposed to symbols of love. This can be seen visually throughout the sixteenth century in portraiture of children with their parents, who were stylized similarly to their parents and/or depicted to possess adult like features. While Ariès work is viewed as a principle text in the studies of childhood, Italian Renaissance scholars such as Linda Pollock, Louis Haas, Jacqueline Mussachio, and Christiane Klapisch Zuber refute these claims, stating that ...childhood was viewed as a discrete part of domestic life, portioned off from adulthood; as a time of innocence and play; a stage in life in which a child is shielded by parents to the harsh realities of adulthood . • 12. Impact Of Mexican Cuisine On National Identity The Impact of Mexican Cuisine on National Identity Authentic, traditional Mexican food is thought to be a product that was developed by the Mayan Indians. Food was first hunted and gathered so that it was then cooked on ceramic pots or iron skillets over open fires. This ritual was fundamental for the natives. They needed to obtain their food and prepare it in this way so that they could eat. This exemplifies the idea that the preparation of food is not only symbolic of having a meal to eat, but also of nature being transformed into culture. Additionally, everyone has a deep personal connection with the simple act of eating because what one person prefers to eat might be different for another individual. As individuals, we are each born into a culture that most likely has a cuisine different from what others prefer or are accustomed to. All of our palates are distinctly unique. To provide an example of the aforementioned, the Spanish invaded Mexico in the 16th century, and they brought along with them their own kinds of foods, with wheat holding a particular importance. The Spaniards made attempts so that Mexicans too would have the same liking to wheat as they did, but the reality was that Mexico had a strong attachment to corn. And while the introduction of wheat caused corn to be thought of as nutrient deficient, Porfirian intellectual elites later found that their maize was as equally healthy. • 13. I Will Revisit Russon s Definition Of Memory, And Three... In this paper I will revisit Russon s definition of memory, and three of the aspects that he presents as important in the memory process. I will also argue that our body play an important role for our remembering, as does the objects we interact with. As well as present my position on Russon description of memory demonstrating that Russon s description is indeed relatable to the actual human experience. Russon s definition of memory is not subjected to one main idea, but rather an intertwining of related ideas pertaining to experience. He views memory as, What we experience as the determinateness of objects that communicates to us what we can and cannot do, (Russon 41). To emphasize, we experience our world through interactions with the world s objects. The contact made with these objects provides an identity for them that later communicates to us about ourselves. Russon present this idea of memory based on two types of memory, implicit and explicit. Implicit memory are memories that we remember in part, while explicit memory are those that we remember completely. An example that Russon gives in another instance that connects to this is the idea of him terminating his lease and having a few weeks remaining is inscribed in everything within his apartment. Each object represents the identity of the future commitment of moving whether pervasively or occasionally. However Russon thinks that for us to remember there are certain aspects that needs to be involve. First is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Virtue Ethics And The Moral Life Virtue ethics is concerned with the traits of character that make one a good person. Virtue ethics seems to be more personal because it is not about choosing which side of an issue one would prefer to take part in, but the kind of person one wants to be. A virtuous person is considered to be a morally good person, and virtues are good traits. For virtue ethics, the moral life is about developing good character. Aristotle was one of the earliest writers to ground morality in nature, and specifically in human nature. For Aristotle, virtue was an excellence of some sort. According to Aristotle, there are two types of virtues: intellectual virtues and moral virtues. Intellectual virtues are excellences of the mind, such as the ability to understand, reason, and judge well. These traits can be learned from teachers. Moral virtues on the other hand, dispose us to act well. These virtues cannot be taught, and they are learned by repetition. Aristotle s list of virtues includes courage, temperance, justice, pride, and magnanimity. However Aristotle is probably most well known for his position that virtue is a mean between extremes. For example courage is to be understood as a mean between the two extremes of deficiency and excess. Too little courage is cowardice, and too much is foolhardiness. When we concern ourselves with virtue ethics I don t think that there are any virtues that can be universalized because the character traits apply mainly to individuals. Some may say that ... Increased Rates of Teen Pregnancy among Minorities Increased rates of teen pregnancy among minorities The incidence of teen births in the United States has reached a historic all time low throughout the last couple of years but teen girls are still giving birth to 1700 babies a week. However, minorities are still amongst the highest group of teenagers having children among the age group between 15 and 19 years of age. The highest ethnic groups were comprised of Hispanics and Non Hispanic blacks making up 57% of all US teen births in 2011, according to a study done by the CDC in 2011. American Indians and Alaskan Natives had the third highest birth rates at about 36 births per 1000 females. The smallest occurrence of teen births per 1000 came from the Asian/Pacific Islander population. However, the continuously low population group with teen pregnancies involved White individuals so the question remains, why are most minority groups more likely to give birth within their teenage years? Research shows that about 80 percent of all the teenagers between the age group of 15 17 had no formal sexual education before their first sexual experience. Regardless of their ethnicity, all students can be affected by the lack of sexual education at their respected school. Competitive Advantages Of Competitive Advantage Competitive advantage literally is the ability to sustain profits that exceed the average for the industry through developing distinctive competencies: distinctive, because the competitors don t have them and because they are fundamentally difficult to replicate (Berry, 2012). Competitive advantage through people is critical for a business to succeed. Without people, businesses would lack the ability to have the innovations to differentiate their products or services from their contenders in the same field of interest. People are critical from in developing and producing the product or service for the company to drive customer satisfaction. John C. Competition is the first one which consists of a business opponents and the market share to compete against for the best product and service with a lower cost. Next are the challenges. These challenges include economic handicaps that a business can face such as scarce resources. Naturally people fear change.
