A Doll’s House and Top Girls
A Comparative Essay of A Doll s House and Top Girls Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House and Caryl
Churchill s Top Girls both are a pillar of critical writing about the society they were originally
produced in and have a central theme of the oppression of women, which makes them great sources of
feminist reviews. Although Ibsen abandoned the concept that the play was about gender roles (Urban,
1997), the central question is beyond the original context within which the plays were produced and
received. A Doll s House can be regarded as criticism of the 19th century marriage norm, the work of
the naturalist and the romanticist movement, whereas Top Girls considers gender roles and necessary
sacrifices of women to be successful and rise above a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Churchill deals with the question differently and puts emphasis on the sacrifice women have to make,

Lotus F1 Team Essay
Formula one (F1) championship was the second most watched sporting event on the planet, which
estimated 110 million unique viewers per race. Lotus F1 team is one of the most successful F1 team. It
had won respectively 7 constructors world titles. And it had won two world title. When they were
fighting for third place in the Championship, an awful news that the 2014 season would bring a bunch
of disruptive changes came out. What s worse, its best driver, Kimi Räikkönen, had announced that he
would leave the team at the end of the 2014 season.
This case mentioned many issues, like driver management issue, budget management issue, and etc. In
the following essay, I list two alternative to solve these issues, and then I also give some criteria to
evaluate these alternatives. In the end, I also give my own way to implement my recommendations.
Problem Statement
Lotus F1 team was a British formula one racing team. It had a strong racing heritage and had won two
World Titles under the Renault name in 2005 and 2006. It had contracts with two primary drivers and
three test drivers. When Lotus F1 was fighting for third place in the championship, a thunderbolt
jumped out and posted a big and common problem to every F1 team.
Three major problems were presented by this case: driver management issue, budget management
issue and product design issue. F1 drivers primary role was to pilot the team s car with consistency
and win points. A good driver is one of the most valuable assets of

Edward Estlin s The Enormous Room
Of course, every poet has their beginnings. Edward Estlin s life began on the 14th of October in 1984
in Cambridge, Massachusetts to well educated and liberal parents, and Rebecca Haswell Clark. The
biggest influence that Cummings had as a child was from his mother, who always encouraged him to
write poetry and she helped ingrain into him a love for literature too. Cummings went to Harvard

What Is The Dominant Spoken Language In Chile
Communication is universal around the world, severely impacts every aspect of people s lives, and is
an integral part of doing business in foreign territories. According to Satterlee (2014), Individuals and
organizations within each culture communicate in manners unique to their culture (p. 43). Thus,
understanding the culture and forms of communication is vital to conducting business around the
world efficiently. Spanish is the dominant spoken language in Chile, though locals speak other native
languages such as Mapudungun (Kurian, 2017). Additionally, English is another language that is

Dante s Divine Reason And Divine Reason
Divine wisdom will never be attainable, as it is a knowledge that is only truly understood by God.
Though this may sound like common sense, I believe that how we live can change our distance from
obtaining even an inch of this insight. Since Dante himself proposes the way of achieving it, I have
taken it upon myself to explore why it is difficult for humans to realize this, if it is as simple as
utilizing both faith and reason, the two wings needed to rise towards God. Throughout the comedy,
one of the main themes is divine reason versus human reason, which accounts for the changes in
Dante, whom is coming to these greater truths found only through God. However, we struggle to take
that same course, because our society allows us to encounter false prophets, whom I will explore
further through one of Dante s most popular characters, Ulysses. This tragic hero is more tragically a
reason for our estrangement from God. Thus people may not always see where reason, where a quest
for wisdom, fails and so, I place St. Francis and St. Dominic side by side in order to demonstrate why
one should not be without the other. Where one is, it is right to introduce (33), the other: side by side,
they fought, so may (34), they share in glory and together gleam. (Paradiso 12:33 35). Divine
reasoning is beyond the scope of man, as it cannot be reached through our own way of thinking,
researching or exploring. It calls for the guiding hand of divinity and thus, it is not always clear or

What Does It Mean To Be Nobody
Nobody. A controversial word because it is associated with being nothing; being unimportant, being
less than. Somebody. A word that is sought after because of what it holds, what it lets those who are
defined by it become. I m Nobody! Who are You? A poem written by Emily Dickinson, is a writing
that compares the value between being a nobody and somebody. Nobodies define real life and how to
live it, they are the majority; while somebodies are just a handful.
This world is full of nobodies with a universal feeling of being on the outside as Harold Bloom writes.
Being a nobody is not being nothing it is just being something unique . It is not to be a follower nor a
leader either, it is to blend into the crowd and not to be be noticed easily.

The Integration Of Emotional Intelligence Into Healthcare
The Integration of Emotional Intelligence into Healthcare Throughout today s healthcare industry,
many organizations have been constantly striving to stay ahead of the competition. One area of focus
has been improvement of the organization s leaders. In order to create a strong organizational culture
and successful healthcare system, effective leadership is needed. It is thought that one major
characteristic that aids in the effectiveness of many leaders is the ability to utilize their emotional
intelligence. This paper will discuss the development and background of emotional intelligence, its
importance and function within the nursing industry, the integration into one s own practice, as well as
the role it has played in regards to personal growth.
Development and Background The theory of emotional intelligence was first introduced in 1990 by
John Mayer and Peter Salovey. They developed various ways to measure emotional intelligence
abilities, if it improved with age, and if emotional intelligence abilities formed a unified intelligence
(Mayer, 2009). Mayer and Salovey found that if all criteria were met, than it was said to be a true
intelligence. As described by Mayer (2009), emotional intelligence can be defined as one s capability
to reason about emotions and emotional information, and of emotions to enhance thought. Those with
high emotional intelligence can accurately perceive emotions in other s faces. They also know how to
use specific emotional times within

The Concept Of Cultural Erasure, Inequality And Violence
Postcolonialism: The Concept of Cultural Erasure, Inequality and Violence Colonization can be dated
back to 1492 with the Spanish venture led by Columbus. Colonialism is defined as The policy or
practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers,
and exploiting it economically (Oxford Dictionary). This expedition spread European influence
worldwide, in places such as China, Lebanon, India, and Antigua. European influence is still prevalent
today through the crossing of racial lines and shifting of cultures towards a more civilized way of
living. Colonialism is still prevalent today, in the form of postcolonialism. Postcolonialism can be
defined as America s benefaction to nations worldwide that include dynamic influences in things such
as: government, culture, education and economy. One of the concepts erected from colonialism is
globalization. Since globalization is a direct effect of colonialism, it is no surprise that globalization
influences the same categories as postcolonialism (government, culture, education and economy),
making the two concepts almost synonymous with minimal differences. Globalization is defined as
the integration of economics and communications of nations through increased contact by technology.
Globalization dominates the economic and social side of the field while postcolonialism dwells in the
cultural and educational aspects. This European gift has contributed to global conflicts,

Lady Macbeth Seizing The Daggers Summary
The Henry Fuseli s depiction of Macbeth in the painting Lady Macbeth Seizing the Daggers portrays
him as weak, fearful, and deranged while giving a sympathetic tone. Macbeth looks thin and fragile.
His arms are skeletal. His legs are also skeletal. His eyebrows turn up at the middle. His eyes are wide
giving off the feeling of fear. His mouth is also open wide showing his fear. His eyes are light
compared to the rest of him, which emphasizes how large and wide they are. The eyes are full of fear,
and they are also deranged. His wide eyes also look hypnotized, and stuck. His hair helps show his
mental state. It is going in lots of different ways, and is in disarray. He is not in control of himself, but
he is a wreck and is borderline deranged. His stance is also very revealing. He is holding out his arms

affected by the situation and is in control of herself and strong. She is more powerful and in control of

Analysis Of One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest By Ken Kesey
Sigmund Freud was someone who turned clinical psychology on its head; therefore, it only makes
sense that he would be an inspiration for someone who completely redefined literature. In the novel
One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest author Ken Kesey weaves an intricate, while subtextual, theme that
mirrors concepts of Freudian psychology. About a decade after publication, in her article Kesey and
Freud, former Northeastern University professor Ruth Sullivan analyzes the progression and impact of
Kesey s use of Freudian psychology, most specifically, Kesey s use of Freud s Oedipus Complex as it
pertains to the characters Nurse Ratched, R.P. McMurphy, and Chief Bromden. While it is true that

According to an article titled The Oedipal Crisis, the main stages of the Oedipal Complex that deals
with a mother are that, the first love object for [the son] is the mother, the young boy is threatened by
the father s relationship with his mother, and the father is perceived as an enemy.
(http://www.changingstates.co.uk/freud.html). Nurse Ratched never fulfills any of those roles; in fact,
she is seen as the clear enemy the whole entire book. The enemy is never McMurphy; instead, Nurse
Ratched is described as the root of all the trouble here (Kesey, 185). Ratched and McMurphy s
relationship is not sexual and the men on the ward are never envious of McMurphy for his relationship
with Nurse Ratched. Instead, Nurse Ratched is seen as a woman who McMurphy describes as a ball
cutter (Kesey, 60) Nurse Ratched is not someone who is seen as appealing or attractive or warm like a
Freudian mother, rather, she is a woman that makes a man powerless and asexual. Freud s Oedipal
triangle is clearly missing one point because the Big Nurse does not fulfill the concept of a Freudian
mother. That is where Sullivan s analysis falls

Residing in the Southwest United States, the Navajo Indian tribe is one of the largest tribes in America
today. In their own language, they refer to themselves as Diné which means the people . They are an
old tribe with descendants tracing their roots back to the thirteenth century. The first contact that the

While bamboo stalks and roots make up 95% of
its diet, the giant panda also feeds on gentians,
irises, crocuses, fish, pikas, vines, mushrooms, rice

At one point in time, giant pandas flourished in eastern China and
several neighboring countries.
The giant panda is believed to have made its first
appearance during the late Pilocene or early

Is The Narrator Unreliable In Bartleby The Scrivener
Is the Narrator Unreliable in Bartleby the Scrivener ? Melville created something new in Bartleby the
scrivener; as a well known story the narrator that tells the story is unreliable because he sounds bias to
one of the character in the story. For example from the book first clue he gives us comes in the first
sentence I am a rather elderly man . Instead of taking him right away as a wise old man who is giving
us the story straight, look for contradictions in his narration. His prudence and method might easily
translate into words like greedy or miserly. He claims to be mild mannered but is furious about the
abolition of his former job because he counted on doing little or no work, and making enormous
profits (Melville 406). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

belligerent while working, but rather content that they do not rebel at the same time. A Narrator is just
a person. He is not a particularly kind and understanding man, nor is he an unusually outspoken one.
No, he is just well, just a man who is going about his life in the easiest way possible. introducing the

Why Is Electronic Voting A Bad Idea
Is Electronic Voting a Bad Idea?
Is electronic voting a bad idea? Some people believe it is and others do not. In my opinion, I think
electronic voting is not a good idea. I do not trust electronic voting due to hacking problems, also
because its very expensive as well and not everyone knows or can use an electronic device.
One reason I believe electronic voting is not a good idea is because of hacking problems. I dont feel
like its a secure way to vote. Just with basic electrical knowledge and tools someone can easily hack
the system and tamper with the votes. For example: in my experience i knew someone that was very
skilled in computers. This person easily showed me how he can use certain codes and hack into
cameras from other places. That in fact scared me because he made it look so easy. No matter how
good the technology may be these days there is always someone out there that can easily hack and

The Debate Between Creation And Evolution
The debate between creation and evolution has been around for a long time. For much of it, it has
presented a choice between the two. Some claim that you either believe in God or evolution, not both.
Others, that you have to choose young earth creationism simply because theistic evolution is not a
viable option. Still more present young earth creationism as a naive understanding of both the Bible
and science. However, since each position has evidence in support of it and against it, it is in no way
true that any of them present us with an undeniable position of definite accuracy. Furthermore, the
idea that there is only a choice between creation and evolution is false. Indeed, there are more
positions than even creationism and theistic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is for this reason that the debate is also not between science and Christianity. Each advocate for each
position is attempting to reconcile the apparent differences between science and Christianity. It is
simply the case that they each take a different approach and give different amounts of authority to
science and a literal interpretation of Genesis.
The first position is that of young earth creationism. Additionally, this is what most people mean when
referring to creationism. This is primarily due to the fact that the creationists visible in the public eye
during the creation evolution debate were most likely to hold young earth creationist views.
Additionally, the terms recent earth or recent creation have been used to refer to this same position.
These terms clearly define their position as one in which the creation of the world occurred somewhat
recently, that is, the world is young. However, it obviously doesn t provide us with much information
beyond that. To begin with, how young is the world? In order to help answer this and other questions

author Guy de Maupassant, lets the two friends determine their fate. The friends either disclose the
password and betray their country, or they get murdered by the Prussians. If the friends choose to save
their own lives and give up the password, their country would get attacked from the inside meanwhile
trying to survive attacks from the outside. Many countrymen would die and those who survived would
be taken prisoner. If the two friends do not disclose the password, they would also not have to deal
with the pain of losing family and friends. In addition, they saved their country by not giving the
password to the officer. Finally, the two friends would be providing a chance of a life without hunger
or fear to the people of France. Therefore, the two friends should not give up the password, even if it
means death. The first reason is they would not have to deal with the pain of losing family and friends.
In the story, the Prussians were occupying part of France, looting, committing atrocities, [and]
reducing people to starvation (Maupassant 172). Therefore, many people were killed and many others
were captured and held prisoner. Hence, if the characters did not give the password to the officer they
would die thus they would not have to feel the grief of losing important

Essay on Loss In One Art by Elizabeth Bishop
One Art by Elizabeth Bishop is a poem that explores loss in comparison to an art; however, this art is
not one to be envied or sought after to succeed at. Everyone has experienced loss as the art of losing is
presented as inevitably simple to master. The speaker s attitude toward loss becomes gradually more
serious as the poem progresses.
Keys, having virtually no reason for emotional attachment, are mentioned in line 5 with a tone of
acceptance that, Yes, it is okay to lose keys. Although vital to the penetration of a lock, keys are such a
generic object that they can be easily replaced and, aside from the inability to open that door, will not
be missed for long. Lines 2 and 3 state that so many things seem filled with the intent ... Show more

At this point in the poem, the speaker s attitude toward loss is rather blasé due to the fact that the items
she has misplaced holds no emotional attachment and can be replaced.
As the poem progresses, the misplaced or forgotten items become concepts such as names and ideas,
and therefore carry more of an impact. For example, forgetting someone s name, however not
uncommon, can be associated with feelings of embarrassment from the forgettor, and annoyance from
the forgotten when they discover that they were not important enough to be remembered. The speaker
simply shrugs off these losses because None of [them] will bring disaster, as mentioned in line 9.
Emotion, often associated with memories is introduced in line 10 when the speaker announces, I lost
my mother s watch. An item such as a mother s watch holds sentimental value, unlike the previously
mentioned keys; however, the speaker repeats, I miss them, but it wasn t a disaster, (line 15) indicating
that the watch was merely a material possession crowded with memories. At this point, the reader
recognizes the feeling of missing something associated with greater losses of objects and ideas the
speaker regards with more emotional attachment.
In line 16, the speaker s emotional attitude toward loss changes as it becomes evident that the speaker
has lost a person, yet they still view loss as a part of

The Compromise Of 1850
The events of the mid 1800s kept the nation together and pulled it apart because of the Compromise of
1850, the Kansas Nebraska Act, and the Dred Scott Decision. The Compromise of 1850 is the
agreements made in order to admit California into the Union as a free state. These arguments included
allowing the New Mexico and Utah territories to decide whether to allow slavery or not. This would
outlaw the slave trade in Washington D.C. and create a stronger fugitive slave law. Henry Clay, who
created this compromise thought that it would please everyone. The Compromise would admit
California as a free state which would make the North happy, New Mexico and Utah territories could
decide whether to allow slavery would make the South happy, and the ... Show more content on

Dred Scott went to trial to sue for his freedom in 1846, but not until 10 years later his case was
brought. Scott had travelled with his owner to Wisconsin, where slavery was banned by the Missouri
Compromise and when he returned to Missouri, he decided that he wanted to go to court and win his
freedom. Him and his wife, Harriet Scott knew that there was a doctrine in states court called once
free, always free . Once free, always free means that if you were an enslaved person held in a free
territory, then you should be free even in a slave state. Scott argued that his stay in Wisconsin had
made him a free man, connecting to the once free, always free . On March 6, 1857, Chief Justice
Taney delivered the Dred Scott Decision. Many of his fellow justices thought that he would free Dred
Scott, because he had gone on to free his own slaves, but he didn t. Taney argued that slaves were
property and the 5th Amendment says that property can not be taken from people without due process
of law, the fact that Scott was black, therefore not a citizen and could never become one, meant that he
could not sue. The Dred Scott decision delighted slaveholders because the court said no to letting Dred
Scott be free. The court rejected Scott s argument that his stay in Wisconsin has made him a free man,
because the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional. The ruling had 3 main parts, said Matthew
Pinsker, First, blacks had no rights. Second, slave states no longer had to honor the once free, always
free, and third, congress never should have prohibited slavery in Wisconsin territories or in any
territories. This created a huge firestorm of controversy and ultimately is one of the leading causes of
the civil war, . Him and his wife was freed because Dred Scott s original owner had 2 sons that later
became anti slavery. The 2 sons helped fund for Scott s legal cases for many years,

America s Present School System Essay
What can be defined as school in America or who created and contributed to the modern school
system? My fundamental question was what are the significant contributions (and who contributed) to
America s present school system? Schools in America have gone back years since 1635 starting in
Boston, Massachusetts which lead to the first school being named the Boston Latin school. With the
opening of the first school many teachers and leaders focused on religious values instead of specific
subject areas as we would today. However, there have been changes in the way we teach the future
generations that are different from the 1600s. In order to see these changes we have to take a time
machine back to the 1800s, 1990s, and 2000s. The 1800s brought Americans the common school
movement, Horace Mann, the Committee of Ten, and the Prussian system in America. In addition
great advancements have been made in the school system, but not as much advancement has been
made since the 1800s. This can be a problem as the internet and technology blossomed in the late
1990s and today many teachers have questioned if we should really teach the same way we did almost
180 years ago. From the past we have gotten common core, standardized testing or teaching children
as if they are on an assembly line which all come into question in today s school system. Programs
such as KIPP or Khan academy are showing how children can be in classrooms that are more student
led. Also first year teachers can find a way

my project I have chosen theme, to be the topic of this section. The theme of this book is about a
young twelve year old boy and his baseball dream. Notice I have used a slightly large picture of Derek
Jeter that is because in the book Josh LeBlanc the main character says in page nine teen Jaden knows
someday I hope to be play major league ball like my father, but since I am short stop I hope to be like
Derek Jeter . I have also used a picture of the little league world series in Williamsport Pennsylvania
this is because Josh and the Lexington all star team are on the road to the little league World Series.
On page ten Josh s father tells him Josh I have to tell you tell you something maybe you should take a

over my parents divorcing, but the only thing going through my mind was the championship game in
Williamsport this Saturday . Why I have chosen to use a picture of the U.S.A is because they travel a

Chapter 1 Principles of Flight Section A: Airplanes A. Major Components (or Sections) of an Airplane
1. Fuselage a. This is the body of the airplane generally from nose to tail. b. It consists of the main
airplane structure like frames, stringers, longerons, keel beam and skin. 2. Wings a. This is the
component or section of the airplane that is responsible for aerodynamic lift. b. Lift is the force that

straight or rectangular, Elliptical, tapered towards the tips, sweptback and delta. d. Aspect Ratio = this
is the ratio of the wing s length to its width. For a given angle of attack, a higher aspect ratio produces

is attached to the fuselage at a small angle which is between the chord line and the horizontal plane. b.
The angle of incidence provides a positive angle of attack while the airplane is in level flight. 2.
Coefficient of Lift (CL) a. This is the built in relationship between wing lift and wing angle of attack.
b. CL is measured by testing the wing airfoil in the wind tunnel. [pic] G. Pilot Control of Lift 1. An
increase in the airplane s forward speed via the thrust lever will increase lift. 2. Changing the shape of
the wing by lowering the flaps increases lift. 3. Pulling on the control column will increase the
positive angle of attack on the wing which will increase lift. 4. Pushing on the control column will
produce a negative angle of attack on the wing. This action will decrease wing lift. 5. An increase in
lift is always followed by an increase in drag. 6. A positive angle of attack up to and beyond the wing
design limit will completely destroy lift and produce excessive

1912. The fable states that An Ass once found a Lion s skin which the hunters had left out in the sun to
dry. He put it on and went towards his native village. The Ass found the Lions skin and put it on
knowing that it was not his. The Ass did not think much of taking the Lion s skin and wearing it as his
own because the hunters left the skin out to dry. To add on, the fable states that All fled at his
approach, both men and animals, and he was a proud Ass that day. The Ass went into his village and
scared all of the people and animals because he looked like a lion. The Ass thought it was fun and cool
that he was terrifying the innocent people and did not feel guilty at all. Lastly, the fable states that In

The Role Of Subculture Theory In The United States
This chapter had a lot of important and informative insights. Yet the most insightful information that I
have learned, was subculture theory. Subculture theory is the shared [of] several traits with activity
theory and disengagement theory a convention that people lost statues in old age, a focus on role
changes in later life, and a belief that activity enhanced the lives of the elderly. It differed in that it
built on a sociological theory of subcultural development (pg.53). I have learned today in one of my
other class that we humans are living longer than in the past years. The United State is one of the
countries in which the elderly groups are living longer than other countries. The average age of elderly
for 2020 is 60 75 years old.

How the Negative and Positive Impacts of Love Are Explored...
The negative and positive impacts of love are explored using various main characters in the play
Much ado About Nothing . The play was written by Shakespeare in the Elizabethan era and therefore
love was portrayed in a very different way, they would have seen a woman as less important in a
relationship; in this era however we have very different views and see both genders as equal.
Consequently as the play progresses the Elizabethan audience would relate a lot more to the courtly
love that Hero and Claudio comprise. The more unconventional relationship between Beatrice and
Benedick may relate more to the relationships in this day and age. The strongest bond of love is
between Beatrice and Benedick due to their cerebral relationship, a ... Show more content on

This idea of being cheated on and experiencing a negative impact of love is similar to an idea the
poem Ballad when it says He has two hearts and I have none . Beatrice says a double heart for his
single one . Both of these women had their heart stolen by a man that they thought loved them, they
gave away their hearts but did not get anything in return; Beatrice now has a bitter attitude towards
both Benedick and love in general. She is also however independent enough to fight her own battles.
The second semantic field she uses is about war and fighting. First of all she lacks confidence that he
was any help in the war, expressed by the quotes: I pray you, how many hath he killed and eaten in
theses wars? But how many hath he killed? and what is he to a lord? These propose that she thinks he
is worthless to the Prince and to the war. She mocks him and says he is a very valiant trencherman just
because he has a strong stomach and can eat anything. She continues to wound him with insults at the
masked ball where she says Benedick is the prince s jester, a very dull fool . She does not want to be
seen as less important just because she is a woman, she expresses her views blatantly. An Elizabethan
audience would have seen this as very unusual and un ladylike for a woman, she is not the typical
quiet and modest person that she may have been expected to be considering she had an uncle of quite

Personal Narrative-Immature Team
My sophomore year of highschool I was not very good at baseball. Honestly, the team as a whole was
not very good. We were a young and immature team; we did not have very much success throughout
the year. We actually had a losing record that year at sixteen and twenty four, and that is embarrassing
if you ask me. The entire season was honestly a disappointment because we knew that we were much
better than that, and the next year we would prove that theory true. The next year the team made a
complete 180 degree turn. Although, at the beginning of the season we started with three straight
losses; The season turned for the better quickly. Throughout the year we went on a ten game winning
streak. Then we lost one game, and ended the season on a 21 game winning streak. Including ten
straight wins throughout the playoffs. That is a pretty big improvement compared to only winning 16
games the year before. Our team matured greatly from the year before; we became less selfish and
became a team as a whole. People were willing to do whatever it took to win; even if ... Show more

out to eat. The team was literally together constantly. Another thing that helped our team change
drastically was that many of us started to work out on our own. We became stronger and faster; which
ultimately lead to us winning more games. We would step off the bus and intimidate our opponents.
We were so much bigger than everybody else. We also bought into what our coach was preaching to
us. We believed that we were better than anybody we played. Therefore, we went into the game with
huge confidence, and in baseball confidence is

Personality And Successful Aging In The Film Wild...
For this weeks assignment I watched a 1957 Swedish movie called Wild Strawberries written and
directed by Ingram Bergman. I have not previously seen this movie and found it to be not only
appropriate for this weeks reading, but also helpful in better understanding the process of aging or at
least this movie was viewed from a different perspective today than would have been if seen in the
past, taking the aging process into consideration. In this reflective assignment the following two topics
will be discussed: stage theories of personality and successful aging as related to the film.
Wild Strawberries is a film about a 78 year old man named Isak, who is a successful and revered
retired doctor/professor. Isak is portrayed as a man who lived a lonely, cold, but success driven life.
Once nominated to receive an honorary degree from the university he attended, Isak begins to reflect
upon his life. Isak decides to drive instead of flying from Stockholm to Lund in order to receive the
award and faces many events that cause him to reflect upon his past. ... Show more content on

wisdom and a positive perspective of his past and ultimately his ability to find meaning in his life.
Additionally, he develops a positive relationship not only with the young hitchhikers he picked up
while driving, but most importantly his daughter in law who appeared to be seeking direction and
support from him and possibly his son, at least the movie left that impression on

I made out my grandmother s tall stooped form and gray bun. The rosebuds that circled the house

eternally depressed expression as we climbed out the car. The gardener, a small dark man, was
crouched on his hands and knees, tending to the flowers and my mother shouted to him, Hey there,
Joe! How s things? (Senna 102), Also, you can also figure out the difference of lifestyles between
Sandy and her mother when the maid comes to the door. Birdie describes, Edna came to greet us at the
door. She was my grandmother s housecleaner, a Caribbean woman with salt and pepper hair. She
smelled of lemon and wore chunky white nurse shoes and neatly pressed hair. She made everything

her home indicates that she is a part of the wealthy upper class. According to Judith Lorber, Because
white people are the superior group, white people do not have to do the dirty work , such as house
work; the most inferior group does it, usually poor women of color (Lorber 116). Lorber basically
sums the reason the assumption of why Sandy s mother has housecleaners. The difference of Sandy s

  • 2. A Doll’s House and Top Girls A Comparative Essay of A Doll s House and Top Girls Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House and Caryl Churchill s Top Girls both are a pillar of critical writing about the society they were originally produced in and have a central theme of the oppression of women, which makes them great sources of feminist reviews. Although Ibsen abandoned the concept that the play was about gender roles (Urban, 1997), the central question is beyond the original context within which the plays were produced and received. A Doll s House can be regarded as criticism of the 19th century marriage norm, the work of the naturalist and the romanticist movement, whereas Top Girls considers gender roles and necessary sacrifices of women to be successful and rise above a ... • 8. Dante s Divine Reason And Divine Reason Divine wisdom will never be attainable, as it is a knowledge that is only truly understood by God. Though this may sound like common sense, I believe that how we live can change our distance from obtaining even an inch of this insight. Since Dante himself proposes the way of achieving it, I have taken it upon myself to explore why it is difficult for humans to realize this, if it is as simple as utilizing both faith and reason, the two wings needed to rise towards God. Throughout the comedy, one of the main themes is divine reason versus human reason, which accounts for the changes in Dante, whom is coming to these greater truths found only through God. However, we struggle to take that same course, because our society allows us to encounter false prophets, whom I will explore further through one of Dante s most popular characters, Ulysses. Where one is, it is right to introduce (33), the other: side by side, they fought, so may (34), they share in glory and together gleam. (Paradiso 12:33 35). Divine reasoning is beyond the scope of man, as it cannot be reached through our own way of thinking, researching or exploring. It calls for the guiding hand of divinity and thus, it is not always clear or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Postcolonialism can be defined as America s benefaction to nations worldwide that include dynamic influences in things such as: government, culture, education and economy. One of the concepts erected from colonialism is globalization. Since globalization is a direct effect of colonialism, it is no surprise that globalization influences the same categories as postcolonialism (government, culture, education and economy), making the two concepts almost synonymous with minimal differences. Globalization is defined as the integration of economics and communications of nations through increased contact by technology. Globalization dominates the economic and social side of the field while postcolonialism dwells in the cultural and educational aspects. This European gift has contributed to global conflicts, ... Lady Macbeth Seizing The Daggers Summary The Henry Fuseli s depiction of Macbeth in the painting Lady Macbeth Seizing the Daggers portrays him as weak, fearful, and deranged while giving a sympathetic tone. Macbeth looks thin and fragile. His arms are skeletal. His legs are also skeletal. His eyebrows turn up at the middle. His eyes are wide giving off the feeling of fear. His mouth is also open wide showing his fear. His eyes are light compared to the rest of him, which emphasizes how large and wide they are. The eyes are full of fear, and they are also deranged. Analysis Of One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest By Ken Kesey Sigmund Freud was someone who turned clinical psychology on its head; therefore, it only makes sense that he would be an inspiration for someone who completely redefined literature. In the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest author Ken Kesey weaves an intricate, while subtextual, theme that mirrors concepts of Freudian psychology. About a decade after publication, in her article Kesey and Freud, former Northeastern University professor Ruth Sullivan analyzes the progression and impact of Kesey s use of Freudian psychology, most specifically, Kesey s use of Freud s Oedipus Complex as it pertains to the characters Nurse Ratched, R.P. (http://www.changingstates.co.uk/freud.html). Nurse Ratched never fulfills any of those roles; in fact, she is seen as the clear enemy the whole entire book. The enemy is never McMurphy; instead, Nurse Ratched is described as the root of all the trouble here (Kesey, 185). Ratched and McMurphy s relationship is not sexual and the men on the ward are never envious of McMurphy for his relationship with Nurse Ratched. Instead, Nurse Ratched is seen as a woman who McMurphy describes as a ball cutter (Kesey, 60) Nurse Ratched is not someone who is seen as appealing or attractive or warm like a Freudian mother, rather, she is a woman that makes a man powerless and asexual. Freud s Oedipal triangle is clearly missing one point because the Big Nurse does not fulfill the concept of a Freudian mother. That is where Sullivan s analysis falls ... The short story, Two Friends, takes place in Paris during the French Prussian war. As the story progresses the author Guy de Maupassant, lets the two friends determine their fate. If the friends choose to save their own lives and give up the password, their country would get attacked from the inside meanwhile trying to survive attacks from the outside. At this point in the poem, the speaker s attitude toward loss is rather blasé due to the fact that the items she has misplaced holds no emotional attachment and can be replaced. As the poem progresses, the misplaced or forgotten items become concepts such as names and ideas, and therefore carry more of an impact. For example, forgetting someone s name, however not uncommon, can be associated with feelings of embarrassment from the forgettor, and annoyance from the forgotten when they discover that they were not important enough to be remembered. The speaker simply shrugs off these losses because None of [them] will bring disaster, as mentioned in line 9. Emotion, often associated with memories is introduced in line 10 when the speaker announces, I lost my mother s watch. An item such as a mother s watch holds sentimental value, unlike the previously mentioned keys; however, the speaker repeats, I miss them, but it wasn t a disaster, (line 15) indicating that the watch was merely a material possession crowded with memories. At this point, the reader recognizes the feeling of missing something associated with greater losses of objects and ideas the speaker regards with more emotional attachment. Scott had travelled with his owner to Wisconsin, where slavery was banned by the Missouri Compromise and when he returned to Missouri, he decided that he wanted to go to court and win his freedom. Him and his wife, Harriet Scott knew that there was a doctrine in states court called once free, always free . Once free, always free means that if you were an enslaved person held in a free territory, then you should be free even in a slave state. Scott argued that his stay in Wisconsin had made him a free man, connecting to the once free, always free . On March 6, 1857, Chief Justice Taney delivered the Dred Scott Decision. Many of his fellow justices thought that he would free Dred Scott, because he had gone on to free his own slaves, but he didn t. Taney argued that slaves were property and the 5th Amendment says that property can not be taken from people without due process of law, the fact that Scott was black, therefore not a citizen and could never become one, meant that he could not sue. The Dred Scott decision delighted slaveholders because the court said no to letting Dred Scott be free. The court rejected Scott s argument that his stay in Wisconsin has made him a free man, because the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional. The ruling had 3 main parts, said Matthew Pinsker, First, blacks had no rights. Second, slave states no longer had to honor the once free, always free, and third, congress never should have prohibited slavery in Wisconsin territories or in any territories. My fundamental question was what are the significant contributions (and who contributed) to America s present school system? Schools in America have gone back years since 1635 starting in Boston, Massachusetts which lead to the first school being named the Boston Latin school. With the opening of the first school many teachers and leaders focused on religious values instead of specific subject areas as we would today. However, there have been changes in the way we teach the future generations that are different from the 1600s. In order to see these changes we have to take a time machine back to the 1800s, 1990s, and 2000s. The 1800s brought Americans the common school movement, Horace Mann, the Committee of Ten, and the Prussian system in America. In addition great advancements have been made in the school system, but not as much advancement has been made since the 1800s. This can be a problem as the internet and technology blossomed in the late 1990s and today many teachers have questioned if we should really teach the same way we did almost 180 years ago. From the past we have gotten common core, standardized testing or teaching children as if they are on an assembly line which all come into question in today s school system. • 32. The Role Of Subculture Theory In The United States This chapter had a lot of important and informative insights. Yet the most insightful information that I have learned, was subculture theory. Subculture theory is the shared [of] several traits with activity theory and disengagement theory a convention that people lost statues in old age, a focus on role changes in later life, and a belief that activity enhanced the lives of the elderly. It differed in that it built on a sociological theory of subcultural development (pg.53). I have learned today in one of my other class that we humans are living longer than in the past years. The United State is one of the countries in which the elderly groups are living longer than other countries. The average age of elderly for 2020 is 60 75 years old. ... • 33. How the Negative and Positive Impacts of Love Are Explored... The negative and positive impacts of love are explored using various main characters in the play Much ado About Nothing . The play was written by Shakespeare in the Elizabethan era and therefore love was portrayed in a very different way, they would have seen a woman as less important in a relationship; in this era however we have very different views and see both genders as equal. Consequently as the play progresses the Elizabethan audience would relate a lot more to the courtly love that Hero and Claudio comprise. The more unconventional relationship between Beatrice and Benedick may relate more to the relationships in this day and age. The strongest bond of love is between Beatrice and Benedick due to their cerebral relationship, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This idea of being cheated on and experiencing a negative impact of love is similar to an idea the poem Ballad when it says He has two hearts and I have none . Beatrice says a double heart for his single one . Both of these women had their heart stolen by a man that they thought loved them, they gave away their hearts but did not get anything in return; Beatrice now has a bitter attitude towards both Benedick and love in general. She is also however independent enough to fight her own battles. The second semantic field she uses is about war and fighting. First of all she lacks confidence that he was any help in the war, expressed by the quotes: I pray you, how many hath he killed and eaten in theses wars? But how many hath he killed? and what is he to a lord? These propose that she thinks he is worthless to the Prince and to the war. She mocks him and says he is a very valiant trencherman just because he has a strong stomach and can eat anything. She continues to wound him with insults at the masked ball where she says Benedick is the prince s jester, a very dull fool . She does not want to be seen as less important just because she is a woman, she expresses her views blatantly. An Elizabethan audience would have seen this as very unusual and un ladylike for a woman, she is not the typical quiet and modest person that she may have been expected to be considering she had an uncle of quite a high ... • 34. Personal Narrative-Immature Team My sophomore year of highschool I was not very good at baseball. Honestly, the team as a whole was not very good. We were a young and immature team; we did not have very much success throughout the year. We actually had a losing record that year at sixteen and twenty four, and that is embarrassing if you ask me. The entire season was honestly a disappointment because we knew that we were much better than that, and the next year we would prove that theory true. The next year the team made a complete 180 degree turn. Although, at the beginning of the season we started with three straight losses; The season turned for the better quickly. Throughout the year we went on a ten game winning streak. Then we lost one game, and ended the season on a 21 game winning streak. Including ten straight wins throughout the playoffs. That is a pretty big improvement compared to only winning 16 games the year before. Our team matured greatly from the year before; we became less selfish and became a team as a whole. People were willing to do whatever it took to win; even if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We went from having a losing record, and not even making the playoffs. To going thirty five and six, and sweeping the playoffs. Our team chemistry was amazing; the team spent time together everyday after practice. Whether it was hitting, going to somebody s house and playing games, or even going out to eat. The team was literally together constantly. Another thing that helped our team change drastically was that many of us started to work out on our own. We became stronger and faster; which ultimately lead to us winning more games. We would step off the bus and intimidate our opponents. We were so much bigger than everybody else. We also bought into what our coach was preaching to us. We believed that we were better than anybody we played. Therefore, we went into the game with huge confidence, and in baseball confidence is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Personality And Successful Aging In The Film Wild... For this weeks assignment I watched a 1957 Swedish movie called Wild Strawberries written and directed by Ingram Bergman. I have not previously seen this movie and found it to be not only appropriate for this weeks reading, but also helpful in better understanding the process of aging or at least this movie was viewed from a different perspective today than would have been if seen in the past, taking the aging process into consideration. In this reflective assignment the following two topics will be discussed: stage theories of personality and successful aging as related to the film. Wild Strawberries is a film about a 78 year old man named Isak, who is a successful and revered retired doctor/professor. Isak is portrayed as a man who lived a lonely, cold, but success driven life. Once nominated to receive an honorary degree from the university he attended, Isak begins to reflect upon his life. Isak decides to drive instead of flying from Stockholm to Lund in order to receive the award and faces many events that cause him to reflect upon his past. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through the movie, Isak reflects upon his life through daydreaming of his childhood, past love interest and his relationship with his wife, as well as nightmares making more aware of his mortality. Moreover, his deep discussions, though often unwanted, with his daughter in law leads him to attain wisdom and a positive perspective of his past and ultimately his ability to find meaning in his life. Additionally, he develops a positive relationship not only with the young hitchhikers he picked up while driving, but most importantly his daughter in law who appeared to be seeking direction and support from him and possibly his son, at least the movie left that impression on ... • 36. Class in Caucasia Social Class in Relation to Caucasia Sandy Lee, from Danzy Senna s novel, Caucasia is born and raised into a very wealthy and well known family. Sandy comes from the wealthy town of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Therefore, her father was a respected professor at Harvard University. Sandy received her high school diploma from Buckingham School, and gets accepted to Brandeis, which she later turned down. Sandy didn t fit in around her community and was a rebel. She also tries to escape her upper class lifestyle by marrying Deck, an African American who is a part of the lower class. In my essay I will argue that throughout her life, Sandy s upper class upbringing still impacts her personality and actions, despite her drop in economic status. I ... The rosebuds that circled the house were in bloom read and lavender and white and pink and Gory, the dog, sat watching us with his eternally depressed expression as we climbed out the car. The gardener, a small dark man, was crouched on his hands and knees, tending to the flowers and my mother shouted to him, Hey there, Joe! How s things? (Senna 102), Also, you can also figure out the difference of lifestyles between Sandy and her mother when the maid comes to the door. Birdie describes, Edna came to greet us at the door. She was my grandmother s housecleaner, a Caribbean woman with salt and pepper hair. She smelled of lemon and wore chunky white nurse shoes and neatly pressed hair. She made everything sparkle, but a faint smell of must lingered (Senna 102). The fact Sandy s mother has house cleaners in her home indicates that she is a part of the wealthy upper class. According to Judith Lorber, Because white people are the superior group, white people do not have to do the dirty work , such as house work; the most inferior group does it, usually poor women of color (Lorber 116). Lorber basically sums the reason the assumption of why Sandy s mother has housecleaners. The difference of Sandy s life style is mentioned when her mother comments on her appearance.
