Modernism In The Big Two-Hearted River By Ernest Hemmingway
The topic of war is predominately associated with the history of the world. However, in English
literature, the theme of war is chronicled in various ways that explain past occurrences and retells
stories that occurred in history. One vital genre within English literature is Modernism; formed in the
period of war to convey messages that focus on the psychological aftermaths of the conflicts.
Modernism is literarily defined as the intentional philosophical divergence of the literature and arts of
the olden times, which occurred in the 20th century, with a shift towards an avant garde style and
movements (Dictionary.com). One famous literary work to come out of this thought change was The
Big Two Hearted River by Ernest Hemmingway. Hemmingway belonged to the pioneer writing
members of the modernist genre known as the Lost Generation. This cohort believed in literature that

The Great War, as it is famously known, caused a major cultural shift. It had the consequences of
breaking the social norms that existed at that time and was replaced with newer ways of interaction
with the world. The war prompted the society to be more experimental and convinced them to
embrace the unfamiliarity of individualism. The people saw war as a constant and therefore were
actively looking for means to escape this reality. As the lost generation focused their literature on the
inner workings of their consciousness, so did the society, but wholesomely. Due to this fact, the
Modernist writers cultivated the core and fundamental virtues of that era that is how the inner
consciousness functions and how it affects the self. The Big Two Hearted River by Hemmingway is a
perfect example of this Modernism shift since it describes the life of a soldier coming back from war,
in the quest of serenity after the mental torment suffered during the

Restless Giant Chapter Summary
Kiana Wade Book Review 6 Nov 2105 Restless Giant, a book written by James T. Patterson, provides
us with a concise and historically correct assessment of the time period of the twenty seven years
between the resignation of Richard Nixon and the election of George W. Bush. Patterson makes it a
point to provide for us the relational ties between the social, economical, cultural, political aspects of
life in America. Patterson begins his narrative by placing us in the troubled 70s. He describes the
1970s as grim, tasteless years that are best put out of mind. (p. 13) The mood of the 1970s was
described as gloomy, gaudy and depressing. The issue of race remained the nation s number one
problem. During this time there were only two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
18) Along with the many racial problems of this time period, there were educational issues, drug abuse
problems and rising crime rate. Patterson also talks about the moral decline and the younger
generation. He notes that, a number of public school seemed out of control, (p. 45) doing things such
as swearing in the classrooms and on the streets, spray painting buildings and using drugs and alcohol.
Then there was the topic of sex. It seemed to be advancing in the culture almost as rapidly as violence,
says Patterson. Their was a decline in sexual morality. The sexual themes on TV seemed to be
advancing. Patterson gives us some examples: Mary Tyler Moore Show and Charlie s Angels.
Television shows likes these reflected a sexualizing of the culture. (p.46) Patterson later talks about
the rapid rise in divorce rates and the increase of number of births happening outside of marriage.
During this time agitation for women s rights were at an all time high. Many women began to work
and speak out against sexual discrimination. All these controversies over sex and family life would
have been cause enough for concern even in sunny economic times. (p. 58) Patterson goes on to
discuss the economic problems of this period. The stagflation persisted into the 1980s. This was a
result of the structural changes in the economy. It went from a manufacturing base to a post industrial
society that depended on services. Greater

Tsar Bomba Research Paper
Tsar bomba, a.k.a. Hydrogen bomb, is the most powerful nuclear weapon ever to be created. The
leading scientists for the soviets Andrei Sakharov, Yakov Borisovich Zel dovich, Yulii Borisovich
Khariton, and Yuri Trutnev are the physicists most credited for its creation. The Tsar Bomba was first
tested in 1961 above Mityushikha Bay; all 50 megatons and 60,000 pounds of it was dropped 13,000
feet in the air and the power from the tsar bomb was 10 times stronger than all the explosives used in
WWⅡ combined. If the United States were free to study and work for innovations to excel our nuclear
program and keep us on the brink of the future, we would be second to none and our world would be
much safer. But with the above information questions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The last time, and only time a nuclear bomb was used in combat was August 6,1945. That day was
considered America s bravest time and not in a good way, to launch a weapon with such power has to
come with true commitment, and the realization that you could be killing thousands of innocent
people. Nuclear bombs are always considered morally wrong when used, because of the effect they
have on a country not only are you killing thousands of people innocent or not, you are destroying the
infrastructure or the heart of an entire nation. America has gone far with the nuclear exploration done
so far , but if the restrictions were lifted and we had people who could properly think through tough
situations, who knows what could be accomplished. maybe it doesn t have to end with nuclear

Predestination Social Contract
Predestination and the Social Contract: A Monstrous Combination
Eighteenth century French theologian Cornelius Jansen was famous for his principle of predestination:
humans are either fated to suffer, or they are not. In other words, he believed that no number of good
acts can save one who is predestined to suffer. Another hotly debated philosophy of the time period
was that of nature versus nurture. If one s personality is determined entirely by his nature, then no
amount of social influence should be able to alter this predetermined character, a perspective not
unlike that of Jansenism. On the other hand, Romantic philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau is famous
for his belief that human beings are inherently good, but are corrupted by the evils ... Show more

The village is in a state of senseless panic, as evidenced by Shelley s words roused, fled, and attacked.
Of course, one can assume that the Creature s abnormality frightened the villagers. Fear is, according
to psychologist Mary C. Lamia, PhD, the most powerful emotion. When the villagers react with their
primal instinct to fear the hideous Creature, they transform his benign approach into a battle. In fact,
Mary Shelley finesses her diction to show war imagery when the Creature explains how [he] retreated
and found a shelter... from the barbarity of man. The word retreated characterizes an offensive
defensive relationship between the Creature and the villagers. Not only does a hostile relationship now
exist between the Creature and civilians, but the Creature feels the need to protect himself from their
barbarity. For this first civilian interaction, Shelley draws a stark contrast between the villagers
preconception of the Creature and his true nonconfrontational nature: even though the Creature is
bigger, stronger, and could probably counter their attacks, he chooses to retreat. At this point, the
Creature does not know that his appearance leaves him vulnerable to unchecked prejudice, but a
fundamental idea has been engrained in his mind: these humans are not his friends. Humanity, thanks
to its overwhelming tendency to prejudge, has made a bitter first impression. A major step in the
decision making process is weighing costs and benefits. The Creature wants to present himself as
good enough to live among humans, so he educates himself and learns language through observing the
De Lacy family. However, when the Creature attempts to introduce himself, his already fragile
impression of humankind is shattered. The Creature put much effort into gaining approval from the De
Lacys, but reaped no benefit. He laments to

Auden Vs Ginsberg
Literature has a lengthy history of odds and ends that get categorized by critics as unworthy of
widespread study, yet some are the most brilliant statements of their time. W. H. Auden s book length
poem The Age of Anxiety won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1948. It, along with Allen Ginsberg s
poem Howl, are diamonds that are often disregarded by literary critics and the public as worthless
rough. Each piece was a major breakthrough in its time. Auden and Ginsberg both attempted to define
the period of time and turmoil that they lived in as members of the other in their respective societies.
Both make booming battle cries for a generation, fit well into places of deserved canonical respect,
and receive influence from political and personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its worth is hotly debated. W. B. Yeats and T. S. Eliot were contemporaries of Auden s, and being a
part of that legendary group is close to an automatic deservance of being a canonical poet. Alternate
views from critics either list him as the worst of the three, yet others argue strongly that Auden was
the greatest poet of the entire 20th century for what he could do with words and form. Content in the
book length poem speak volumes of the talent that the American immigrant had. He created something
that is hotly debated as both a failure and his greatest accomplishment, and uncertainty in making that
decision make it all the more worthy to be in the canon. His uncertainty is the only real part of the
poem as Auden s character laments that The less I feel/The more I mind (commentary mag). The best
works are pieces that make one think about their worth. Characters that seem to mean little actually
have a lot to say with what they do as well as their words. Little happens, but the characters actions
comment on major themes of the human being. Halting speeches and words take the reader inside of
the mind as frailties become clear. What this poem has to say is vastly important once one gets past
the errors in form. Psychological and social problems are concerns that Age of Anxiety covers. Verse
should be neither too free nor too formed, as human experience is also neither: breath and

Increased Rates of Teen Pregnancy among Minorities
Increased rates of teen pregnancy among minorities The incidence of teen births in the United States
has reached a historic all time low throughout the last couple of years but teen girls are still giving
birth to 1700 babies a week. However, minorities are still amongst the highest group of teenagers
having children among the age group between 15 and 19 years of age. The highest ethnic groups were
comprised of Hispanics and Non Hispanic blacks making up 57% of all US teen births in 2011,
according to a study done by the CDC in 2011. American Indians and Alaskan Natives had the third
highest birth rates at about 36 births per 1000 females. The smallest occurrence of teen births per 1000
came from the Asian/Pacific Islander population. However, the continuously low population group
with teen pregnancies involved White individuals so the question remains, why are most minority
groups more likely to give birth within their teenage years? Research shows that about 80 percent of
all the teenagers between the age group of 15 17 had no formal sexual education before their first
sexual experience. Regardless of their ethnicity, all students can be affected by the lack of sexual
education at their respected school. Interestingly enough, President Obama has recently cut the budget
for abstinence only sex education. However, this was done because current research indicates that
abstinence only programs do not prevent or delay teen sex. Many teens say that their schools tend to

Popular Mechanics
1. What is the title of the text and what is the text about?
The title of the text is Popular Mechanics, and is about a man and woman fighting over their baby
right before their separation. The fight turns physical, with the man and woman each pulling on the
baby, and ends when the man gives it one final hard pull.
2. What is the author s view? How do I know?
The author s view is that when people fight, they can end up wanting to win for winning s sake,
disregarding their negative impact on people around them, even those that they love. I deduced this
from the way that the author presented the actions of the man and woman. It appears that the man may
have overlooked the baby altogether had the woman not taken away the baby s picture. And then ...

For example, the story starts with an ominous tone because the author chooses to describe the water as
dirty, and the environment becoming dark. He shows the destruction of a beautiful thing by choosing
to describe the knocking down of a flower pot during the struggle. He showed the disregard of the
baby s well being by choosing to describe the baby like an object while the man and woman are
fighting over it.
4. Is the evidence valid? How do I know?
The evidence presented by the author is valid if it feels realistic. For the evidence to feel realistic, I
have to be able to empathize with the characters during their struggles, and be able to picture the
described events happening in the real world. In this case, Carver does a good job painting a realistic
environment and allowing the characters to behave realistically, such that their brutal actions are
believable.
5. Is the evidence relevant? How do I know?
There may have been events described that were not directly relevant to the author s view, but since
overall the story paints a convincing picture of the author s view, there must have been enough
relevant evidence

Racial Inequality In The NFL
For many, speaking up for what you believe in can be difficult and risky, but ultimately worth the risk.
Colin Kaepernick took this risk, by kneeling during the national anthem to stand up against police
brutality and the inequality that people of color (NFL). With many unjust shootings and police
beatings of African Americans, Kaepernick s teammate Eric Reid couldn t stand the violence anymore
after the killing of Alton Sterling in my hometown Baton Rouge, La (Reid). Reid joined Kaepernick in
taking a knee during the national anthem, in doing this Kaepernick and Reid inspired other players to
raise awareness and help those in need. This decision caused huge impacts on the nation, the NFL, and
the youth who look up to the players of the NFL. Racial inequality will always be a huge topic in the
United States of America, and continues today to still be a huge topic. With the NFL players raising
awareness by kneeling and locking arms together during the national anthem, the topic of racial
inequality has gained more interest. After Kaepernick in 2016 first kneeled many other athletes and
stars joined the movement to talk about the problems of racial inequality. People like Ellen
DeGeneres, Zendaya, George Lopez, and many others voice their support for the players (JustJared).

Marx s Explanation Of Class Conflict Theory

the defination of history and power, in history which class had been power and how to use that power

wealthy ( those are owner of mean of production or capatalist) and second poor ( those are working
class, labor). Marx said that wealthy class people or majority of people dominate minority people. The
wealthy people has power and financially rich and they used that power to get political power. How
can they get political power? In present day, we can see that by gaining vote to pay money for voter.
Even today rich people buy political power at the cost of money. One they get political power, they
make policy by changing the outline of society then what happen they get social power with this they
dominate the working class people so that class conflict occur. Marx said that capitalist control mean

Human Abuse In The Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos islands are home to many endemic species such as the various species of tortoise often
associated with them. What they are known less for is the large quantity of invasive species that also
now inhabit the island thanks to man coming to and from the island with only himself in mind. Since
this issue has been noticed, transport to and from the islands has become quite regulated and limited in
the hopes of slowing this disaster in the works. This is seeming to work but it isn t unlikely that all
threats will be eradicated since humans will inevitably inhabit the island (Santoso, 2014). This human

The goat s appetite is also the main problem, they are literally eating everything on the islands, leaving
them barren. Action has already been taken on a rather extreme level. Project Isabela was launched in
1997 with the goal of exterminating every feral goat with a clean shot to the head or the heart (Hirsch,
2013). Highly skilled game wardens were trained and implemented with helicopters and GIS mapping
to employ aerial hunting and scanning to hunt all goats to extinction on the islands. The goats quickly
associated the helicopters with death and began hiding from them. Judas goats were then introduced. A
Judas goat is a female goat injected with hormones designed to keep her in heat draw out males in
hiding (Galapagos Conservancy, 2008). Increases in vegetation are already being seen on the islands
of project Isabela. The task at hand is so huge that 18 years later goats are still being hunted. It has
been found, however, that local fishermen have been known to release more goats onto the islands to
retaliate against the government for fishing regulations that they don t agree with. This is clearly an

Roman City Planning Essay
Roman City Planning
The design and structure of a city is as important as the people who dwell within her walls. The
placement of streets and the structures built there are carefully plotted for optimal use. Foot and cart
traffic, fire hazard, and access to water were all key factors in city planning. Eventually the Romans
had fine tuned their design principals in such an advantageous way that they molded all of their city
states similarly.
Rome developed from the combination of small farming communities around a hilltop fortification.
The city, which was founded before regularized city planning, consisted of a confusing maze of
crooked and gnarled streets. The focal point of which was the city s forum, the main meeting ... Show

men and their generations to follow. The women are the true leaders of the Epic. These women

Comparing Wilkie Collins The Moonstone And A Taste For Hard
In 1944 the literary critic Edmund Wilson wrote an exasperated essay in the pages of The New Yorker
titled Why Do People Read Detective Stories? Wilson, who at the time was about to go abroad to
cover the allied bombing campaign on Germany, felt that he had grown out the detective genre at the
age of twelve, by that time he had read through the stories from the early masters of the detective
genre, Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle. Even tho everyone he knew seemed to be addicted
the genre. His wife at that time, Mary McCarthy, was in the habit of recommending her favorite
detective novels to their émigré pal Vladimir Nabokov; she gave him H. F. Heard s beekeeper

More even than the stories of Poe or Doyle, the early work that to Eliot served as a model for the
genre was The Moonstone, by Wilkie Collins, a sprawling melodrama about the theft and recovery of
an Indian diamond, which appeared in serial installments in Charles Dickens s All the Year Round
magazine in 1868. In his introduction to the 1928 Oxford World Classics edition of the novel, Eliot
called it the first, the longest and the best of modern English detective novels. (This blurb still adorns
Oxford paperback editions.) The story is full of protracted plot twists and portentous cliffhangers,
many of them not of particular relevance to the mystery at hand; we are told as much about the
reading habits of the house steward, a fan of Robinson Crusoe, and the fraught romance between the
handsome Franklin Blake and the impetuous Rachel Verinder, as we are about the circumstances
surrounding the heist. For Eliot, such digressions helped lend the mystery an intangible human
element. In a review written in the January, 1927, issue of The Criterion, he claimed that all good
detective fiction tends to return and approximate to the practice of Wilkie

The Day I almost Died
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beeeeeeep! my alarm clock was piercing my eardrums. I got up slowly, my alarm
clock still going off. It seemed as if the loudness was just getting louder and louder. Finally, I
stumbled out of bed, turning my alarm off. After I got dressed, I went downstairs to pack my mother s
amazing cookies for school. Her secret is adding the right measure of mixing because mixing develops
gluten in the sugar, making the cookies a chewy consistency, adding the right measure of shape
because round dough balls take longer to bake, resulting in softer, thicker cookies, besides adding the
correct amount of spacing because cookies baked at low temperatures spread more during baking and
need approximately 2 inches between them. It also depends on the temperature, and the quantity of
time you bake them for because a low temperature and longer baking time yield crisper, thinner
cookies; a higher heat and shorter baking time makes softer, thicker cookies. My mom taught me these
rules of cooking when I was around five. What can I say, I guess I just have a way of cooking. When I

How Does Homelessness Affect Our Society
Every night across America, roughly 32,000 people between the ages of 18 and 24 are homeless
(Youth Homelessness). In the same night, hundreds of thousands of girls say goodnight to their fellow
sorority sisters before crawling into their beds. As a Panhellenic community, University of Nebraska
gives girls the opportunities to create friendships, form connections, and build strong women. We are
called to be active members of society, and use our fortunate lives to change the world we live in.
After visiting Community First! Village of Austin, Texas, it has become aware to me the severity of
homelessness in America and how simple it can be to change it. Community First! not only builds tiny
homes through donations for homeless people around Austin, but gives them a community to become
a part of. Donating money to build a tiny house at Community First! Village would not only
strengthen UNL s Panhellenic Council s generous reputation, but also support the movement to end
homelessness through providing a home and community to a young outcasted individual.
Community First! Village is sponsored by Mobile Loaves Fishes, a catholic charity that has has grown
to working every night, all year long, providing food, clothing, and hygiene products to the homeless
in surrounding cities of Austin. They have served over 5 million meals with the help of 19,000
volunteers. Their recent innovation (Community First!) is a 27 acre development that has been
building a tiny home community for homeless people to buy for inexpensive prices. The village
features miniature neighborhoods of homes, a church, garden, medical facility, market, movie theater,
and other amenities. The project continues to grow as donations and volunteers come in for
construction of housing and purchases of needed materials and goods. As of now, the village has
housed almost 200 former homeless men and women. Mobile Loaves Fishes continues to house more
people as construction is completed and word has spread to other major cities of the work this
organization has founded and grown. Many of the people living in the village have come from a
variety of lives before moving into the community. Some old, some new, and often have been alone
most of their life.

Biblical Book Of Job Depression
In today s society, depression has become a broad term that often gets thrown around in multiple
different contexts. However, depression is a serious concern that is diagnosable and can lead to several
complications. In 2011, it was found that while 10.7 percent of U.S. college students were diagnosed
or treated for depression, up to 50 percent of college students are vulnerable to developing symptoms
of depression while attending school (Egbert, Miraldi, Murniadi 460). Although depression has
remained a concern among mental health professionals for decades, there is still a lot to learn about
how to treat and prevent this illness. One of the earliest discussions regarding depression can be found
in the Biblical Book of Job, composed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although most people have heard of depression, very few people can depict its symptoms and
effective treatment methods. The Book of Job appears to be one of the earliest works of literature
regarding depression. Kapusta and Frank discuss a number of reasons why Job appears to be
depressed ranging from his dysphoric mood to his poor appetite, restlessness, and reduced sexual
drive. Although Job may have been depressed, he was able to overcome his depression through
support from Elihu and God. Kapusta and Frank s portrayal of Job as a depressed person who is
comforted by Elihu is effective for today s reader as it teaches people the importance of looking out
for their friends. Furthermore, Job teaches us that just because someone is suffering, it does not mean
that the person deserves what is happening to them. On the other hand, Kapusta and Frank s portrayal
of Job is also effective for modern readers who are experiencing depression, since the Book of Job
shows that despite Job s depression, he did not give up on his life. For instance, in Job 2:10, Job says
we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil meaning that God does not will evil
on us (King James Version). The Book of Job is an important reading since it teaches us that either we
or someone we know will suffer at some point. However, just because we are suffering it does not
mean we should have to go through it

`` Animal Rights, Human Wrongs `` By Tom Regan
Everyday individuals attempt to utilize a argument to influence individuals on a certain point which
intrigues them or they are attempting to demonstrate to the world the true importance of something. In
Animal Rights,Human Wrongs. writer Tom Regan discuss shows us how whales and many different
animals are murdered on Earth utilizing his knowledge, records he observed and even realistic
accounts of how some of these creatures are tormented and slaughtered by people. In his arguement he
utilizes clear example of ethos because of his subtle descriptions and facts in light of his encounters.
Another supporting detail in his arguement are the terms logos and pathos in which he utilizes these to
clarify observer records and facts of what is done to the creatures and he uses meetings of other
individuals to give descriptions on how all killings happen.
Regan is extremely educated in the way that he comprehends what the laws state and which zones the
majority of these killings happen in. Toward the start of his contention he starts by discussing how
certain types of creatures are protected by agreement of the member nations of the lnternational
Whaling Commission (Regan 555). In this quote, Regan utilizes ethos by expressing which
organization of people are depended upon for perserving the species that s facing extinction. He

Creating A Blue Ocean Strategy
According to Michael Porter, a company strategist who understands that competition extends well
beyond existing rivals will detect wider competitive threats and be better equipped to address them
(Porter, 2008, p.16). Thinking comprehensively about the structure of the industry as well as its
customers can afford companies the ability to obtain superior performance. Therefore, it is key for
companies to focus on how to maintain existing customers as well as lure new ones.
Three tiers of non customers
As we have learned from our readings, to create a blue ocean strategy means to reach out to untapped
market space, demand creation, and the opportunity for highly profitable growth (Kim Mauborgne,
2005, p.4). These blue ocean strategies can exist beyond existing industries/markets or they can be
expanded upon in existing markets (red oceans). Either way, companies need to go beyond competing
(p.5). To do so companies should identify and attract non customers. The three tiers of non customers
identify different level of non customers companies can attract to convert them into new customers.
We will discuss these non customers as it applies to the Apple IPhone.
The first tier non customers are those smartphone users that are curious about the IPhone and
interested in possible switching. The launch of the IPhone 5 was geared towards two sets of buyers;
existing customers and first tier non customers. Both sets were disappointed with the previous IPhones

Cranberry Bogs had been developed on natural wetland areas. The bogs were formed around the

wetlands were recognized by environmental activists including physical and hydrologic properties
such as flood protection, ground water recharge and erosion control, biological and biochemical

The purpose was to create a program and coordinate assets of the federal government and state
agencies to control and minimize the economic, ecological, and human health impacts caused by
invasive species (Bergman). In addition to organizing and establishing federal policy in regards to
invaders it defines what an invasive species is. Executive Order 13112 defines an invasive species as
an alien species whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or
harm to human health. Invasive species typically harm native species through predation, habitat
degradation and competition for shared resources (Cost of Invasive Species, US Fish amp; Wildlife).
By defining invasive species the order took strides to narrow the scope of non indigenous species to
those who are actively and aggressively pushing our native species out through monopolization of
resources and other tactics. This definition takes pains to, therefore, exclude non indigenous species to
the United States who are not evicting indigenous species out of their native environment rather they
are an almost welcome addition to our ecosystems. North American populations of the ring neck
pheasant, Phasianus colchicus, is a very good examples of this. They were introduced to the North
American continent from Asia through settlers however, these species failed to become aggressive
competitors to native species. Their populations remained controlled through natural predation

British author Anne Zouroudi. The series is composed of seven books that came out between 2007 and

golden winged sandals. Hailing from Athen Hermes Diaktoros is a portly detective that everyone

his motivations are, and how he seems to know people s secrets. He fuels the enigmatic narrative
when he compulsively maintains and wears a pair of pristinely white tennis shoes everywhere he goes.
Despite his unorthodox methods and weird behavior, Hermes is very successful in unearthing
mysteries that happened a long time ago. He deals with the unscrupulous, the likable, the lecherous,

We Need a New Method of Purifying Drinking Water Essay
Chlorine has been purifying our drinking water for the last century. Chlorine has many uses; it is used
as an amazing water disinfectant to rid water of harmful organisms, it sanitizes many surfaces, and it
is used in the production of many products. Virtually all water borne diseases have been wiped out as
a result of purification of drinking water usually with chlorine. Life expectancy has increased fifty
percent in the last century because people are able to drink clean, healthy water. Two hundred million
people in America and Canada drink, shower and swim in chlorinated water everyday, and ninety
eight percent of drinking water treatment facilities use chlorination (Christman, 1998). Chlorine has

Finally, those who take the economic approach believe that chlorine might have some effect, yet the
expenditure of money and time to develop alternatives for all of chlorine s uses make it hard to
eliminate it from our society.
Studies have shown that it is not the chlorine that causes damage to our health, but rather chlorine s
byproducts. Dioxins, which are an unwanted byproduct of industrial production that uses chlorine, are
the most harmful human carcinogens studied (Thornton, 1997). When chlorine is added to our water
supply, it immediately kills many to all of the organisms living in the water. However, it also reacts
with any organic material in the water such as leaves, twigs, or dirt chemically producing byproducts
called trihalomethanes, or THMs. THMs consist of four chemicals: chloroform, bromoform,
bromodichloromethane and dibromochloromethane. Dibromochloromethane is already classified as a
possible known human carcinogen and has been proven to cause cancer in laboratory animals (Times
Union, 1996).
The US Council of Environmental Quality states that, [t]he cancer risk among people drinking
chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine (Showering

every aspect of an abused person s life. It can harm their physical and mental health, their ability to

When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I survived at all. It was, of course, a miserable

In this book Frank McCourt writes about his childhood, how his parents meet in New York and then

Even though Frank shows promise at school, showing a quick mind and naturally reaching for more
demanding literature, he is denied the opportunity to become an altar boy. He is denied the chance of
obtaining the higher education he hungers for. It is important to understand how deeply rooted the
class system in Great Britain including Ireland, was in the beginning of the 20th century. In modern
Europe it is difficult to identify the classes that, during the first half of the century, were extremely
socially significant. It is also difficult to comprehend the extreme poverty of the Depression years.
There was no unemployment insurance, no health insurance and there were no safety nets for the poor.
They were left to their own devices. Their source of protection from abject poverty and starvation was
primarily the church. Otherwise the poor were left at the mercy of friends and family, and on a daily
basis had to swallow their pride. With regard to getting out of this vicious cycle of poverty and
starvation, again it was the church that had the primary responsibility for and control over education.
As has been noted Frank s attempts at becoming a part of the social and religious system that could
take him out of poverty were disrupted by that same system. Frank s struggle for acceptance and
participation in the higher social groups is essential for an analytical understanding

Pastoral Elegy; Alternating Iambic Pentameter and Trimeter, Irregular Rhyme
Dead friend? Check.
Shepherds? Check.
That s it, folks. That s all you need to know about this poem to conclude that Lycidas is a pastoral
elegy.
Great. But wait, what s a pastoral elegy? Awesome question. It s a type of poem invented by the Greek
speaking Sicilian poet Theocritus in the third century BCE. There are two parts to this poem: the elegy
part, and the pastoral part.
Milton covers the elegy angle by making this poem about his dead friend Edward King. An elegy is a
poem mourning the death of someone, who is almost always a fellow poet. Done.
As for the pastoral portion, well a pastoral poem is one that idealizes shepherds and country life, often
presenting it as timeless and easy going. In the poem, Lycidas and the speaker are shepherds who,
before Lycidas death, had a merry old time steering their sheep around the countryside.
These two types of poetry are combined in the pastoral elegy, a genre in which the speaker of the
poem memorializes a fellow poet using a number of features of the pastoral poem. In Lycidas, the
speaker frequently refers to an idyllic past in which he and

The Influence Of The Delian League
The Delian League was an alliance formed by the Ancient Greek city states to form a mutual defense
against a common enemy, the Persians (www.FlowofHistory.com, n.d.). The goal of the Delian
League was to fortify Greece s defenses from its foreign enemies (mainly via a strong navy); and the
League was largely successful at achieving this goal. The Delian League was predominantly
maintained by Athens and was partly responsible for developing a strong mutual defense and navy;
consisting of varying degrees of capital, support, and manpower from surrounding Greek city states
(especially city states near the Aegean Sea), (www.FlowofHistory.com, n.d.). Moreover, although the
Delian League was successful at its goal of implementing a mutual defense strategy for Ancient
Greece, it also became overwhelmingly influenced by Athens; as made evident from a quote in the
assigned reading: The Delian League was turning into an Athenian Empire (www.FlowofHistory.com,
n.d., p. FC23). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
FC23A).
To the extent that this decline was inevitable is debatable; as societies often rise and fall, especially
under the stresses of war and political strife between city states (etc.). However, suffice it to say (for
now), that some circumstances related to the Delian League may have played an integral part in the
rise and fall of the Ancient Greek city states, notwithstanding its initial success at achieving its
immediate goal(s) of mutual defense

The Truman Corner Shopping Center
Please note that the table excludes the existing Truman Corner Shopping Center, which will be
redeveloped into the proposed Truman s Marketplace. There is about 2.5 million SF of retail space in
major centers located within five miles of the site. About 40% of this space is within three miles of the
site. The further away the center is from the redevelopment site the less likely it will provide
competition with Truman s Marketplace. In our opinion, retail centers such as Ward Parkway, Stateline
Station and those in Leawood are far enough away that they would serve a separate market. Even
much of the space within three miles of the site is predominately older, poorly maintained product that
may not effectively compete with the proposed project. Just beyond the five mile radius from the site
are several newer retail centers that either were developed or will be developed by principals of
Legacy Truman. All of these properties are located in Lee s Summit and represent major
concentrations of retail and restaurant space at the I 470 and US 50/MO 350 interchange. Retail
centers and major tenants at this location include: Summit Woods Crossings (801,000 SF): o Includes

A Woman Under The Influence
A Woman Under the Influence is an American dramatic film that was written in an entangled way to
illustrate a story. The auteur John Cassavetes wrote and directed this film that was released in
November of 1974. Cassavetes spent most of his career creating films that were more off the grid ; A
Woman Under the Influence is a prime example considering there was no other American film quite
comparable to it. This was a rare film because the internal fluctuations effectively allowed formulating
of the primary configurations. John Cassavetes rejected the elements and techniques of the American
movie and created his own method (LoBrutto). Cassavetes is known to be the pioneer of American
independent film. Independent filmmaking is difficult to establish an exact definition mostly because
it does not follow a set of specific guidelines. Conversely independent films are commonly designated
to be character driven, and these were the films that frequently had an extremely low budget. A
Woman Under the Influence and some of Cassavetes other films demonstrate in a similar form of
bstylistic characterizations of post World War II European film. Independent filmmakers typically
viewed their films as a film as an art form or as a business film. Nonetheless Cassavetes undoubtedly
viewed his films as a form of art.
The film opens with typical events any average family would endure. Gena Rowland starring as,
Mabel Longhetti is introduced to the audience as a typical housewife. It is

The Success Of A College Student
President Obama was once quoted saying, By the end of this decade two in three job openings will
require some higher education. Two in three. And yet, we still live in a country where too many
Americans are priced out of the education they need. which is a pretty depressing statement to hear
from our commander in chief regarding the future of the people. America is known for being the land
of opportunity where typically the favored goal of the people is acquiring wealth for a better lifestyle
and future. Growing up as a kid I was always told by my teachers and parents that higher education
after high school is extremely necessary; this same expectation goes for the whole country as there is
clearly emphasis on getting a college degree in order to be successful. Although college may not be
for everyone, there are those who would really like to gain acceptance to an institution, but cannot
because they do not have the money to do so. The rise in cost to be a college student has become too
expensive for a country that encourages, and emphasizes higher education. Tuition and fees, loans,
and extra expenses become a big price to pay for wanting to play the proper role in society as a
student looking for a better future. Today s college students have to deal with a huge financial decision
at a very young age that leads to frustration and confusion which is caused by the inflating prices of
college tuition. As decades have passed, it is clear that the cost of college

Qianlong Book Review Essay
Michael Nico Emperor Qianlong, Son of Heaven, Man of the world What the book covers Mark C
Elliott s book Emperor Qianlong Son of Heaven, Man of the World is a short biography about Hongli.
Hongli was the fourth son of the Yongzheng Emperor and the favorite of his father and grandfather
and was born in 1711. In the beginning it describes how he rose up in rank as a son through his father
who introduced him to the current emperor Kangxi, his grandfather. The first chapter gives us the
story of what Hongli was like as a child and how he won the favor of the Emperor. The book follows
Hongli all the time from his birth from a low ranking palace consort right up to the end of his life even
after he technically gave up his title as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many examples of this with samples of these poems by Qianlong himself throughout the
book and pictures of himself, mostly in a propaganda style though. The book gives a great short
explanation of how Qianlong ruled the nation and how he lived in his home life. It details his wives
and how much he liked them and what he did with them on their many travels together across the
Chinese countryside. It goes into detail how much Qianlong was affected by the death of his first wife
and how it might have had an affect on how he ruled from thereon. It shows that he was a loving
person to his family and he treated his parents with as much respect and care for as he could give.
There are descriptions of how Qianlong would go about his daily schedule and how hard it was to be
in his position. It stresses how tough this job would be considering the events going on inside the
nation and foreign threats. It covers his military campaigning and how he saw himself as a great
warlord and giving himself the title old man of ten perfect victories . Elliott doesn t go into extreme
detail of each battle or conflict but it does mention all the major ones, especially the ones that
Qianlong was most proud of. His international scene is covered very well. It describes how he went
about his interactions with all the people that bordered china and those that came from afar. There are
descriptions of how he interacted with the many religions of his nation being

The Great Conroversy of the Nazca Lines
Without a doubt the architecture and the grandeur of Pumapunku is awe inspiring, but just because
something might not be easily explained at first glance does not mean that an explanation does not
exist, buried in the history. Meanwhile nearly 500 miles to the Northeast of Tiwanaku lays another site
of great controversy and is what many ancient alien theorists call the extraterrestrial airport. Located
deep in the Nazca Dessert in southern Peru lies one of the most identifiable archeological sites when it
comes to evidence for aliens being among in the past; the Nazca Lines. Ever since they became known
in the 1920s, when a commercial airplane flew over the dessert, these mysterious encryptions have
puzzled scientists from anthropology to archeology, and just about anyone else fascinated by the lines
and just what they mean or how they got there. Since they were discovered scientists have tried to
explain them as roads, an ancient calendar system, and landing places for alien space ships. Leading
alien theorist Erich Von Daniken theorizes in his book Chariots of the Gods? that the complexity and
interworking s of the glyphs were beyond the capability of the Nazca culture and that their sole
purpose was to act as landing strips and that the shapes of animals were used as reference points.
Although it might be easy for some people to accept these theories as the only plausible explanation,
because what else could the Nazca Lines be. However, just because something is not

Analysis Of The Article Anatomy Of The Medial Knee Essay
I was both satisfied and dissatisfied with FoxNews.com s portrayal of my work. First, the article did a
good job of publicizing (sensationalizing) my work by using the words discovery, discover and
discovered several times throughout the article. This type of promotion (although a misrepresentation)
generated a lot of attention and interest in my research, which encouraged scientific dialogue and
research of the knee ALL. Moreover, this information could benefit patients, orthopedic practitioners,
other researchers and government research institutions.
Second, the article did provide a link to the KU Leuven news article (which provided a more accurate
portrayal of my research) entitled, Surgeons describe new ligament in the human knee. This Ku
Leuven news article contains a link to my original research article entitled, Anatomy of the
anterolateral ligament of the knee. This gave the reader an opportunity to read my research and make
their own educated judgments and conclusions.
Third, FoxNews.com did accurately report that the ligament was named by the researchers:
anterolateral ligament (ALL). This is very important because the whole purpose of the research was to
standardize the definition of the ALL which would provide clarity and minimize confusion among
clinicians and researchers.
Finally, FoxNews.com did accurately report that Dr. Steven Claes and Dr. Johan Bellemens do work at
University Hospitals Leuven and have been conducting research into ACL tears

Threat Assessment Analysis
The American interests at risk
Since the post occupational period of Japan in 1952, United States troops and military bases
throughout the Okinawa Prefecture, and parts of mainland Japan, have been essential to assure peace
and stability within Japan as well as East Asia. Located in the East China Sea,
Okinawa Prefecture is Japan s southernmost prefecture, comprised of 160 islands of which 50 are
inhabited by ~1.5 million residents. The island of Okinawa is 68 miles long and 19 miles wide.
The geostrategic location of Okinawa makes it the favored location to stage United States military

Over the last decade, the People s Republic of China have taken an aggressive military approach to
reclaim the Senkaku Islands from the Japanese.
In 1971, the PRC claimed the Senkaku Islands, colloquially known in China as the Diaoyus,
In 2003, Chinese officials initiated a territorial dispute with the Japanese government questioning the
sovereignty over the Ryukyu Islands. The territorial dispute was first announced in the communist
party newspaper, the People s Daily, where Li Guoqiang and Zhang Haipeng, prominent academics at
the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, challenged the Japanese sovereignty over the Ryukyu
Islands, most notably Okinawa. Specifically, Guoqiang and Haipeng argued that the Ryukyu Islands
had previously been a Chinese vassal state, that had been conquered by the Japanese Empire due to
the Qing Dynasty s inferior military capabilities and are therefore the inherent territory of the PRC.
Similarly, this sentiment was echoed by Luo Yuan, a Lieutenant General in the People s Liberation
Army, stating that the Ryukyu Kingdom had paid tribute to the Chinese empire in 1372, half a
millennium before they were annexed by the Japanese government.
In 2016, the People s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) announced that it would organize regular
exercises throughout the western Pacific, including the Ryukyu

The Development And Development Of The Graphical...
This paper is based on CUDA, a parallel computing platform model, which utilizes the resources of
the Graphical Processing Unit (GPU), increasing the computing performance of our system, hence
creating a robust parallel computing unit. In this paper, we will be introducing a brief history on
CUDA, it s execution flow and it s architecture to handle processor intensive tasks. We will also be
highlighting some of it s real life applications and the difference in performance as compared of the
only CPU based architectures. Also, since most of the CUDA applications are written in C/C++, we
will also be exploring how CUDA provides the programmable interface in such languages as well.

So, in 2007, NVIDIA released CUDA, which provided the parallel architecture, to support the usage
of the GPUs. It was designed to work with programming languages such as C/C++ or Fortran and this
really helped specialists in parallel programming to use CUDA, rather than to learn other advanced
skills in GPU programming[10] . The model for GPU computing is to use a CPU and GPU together in
a heterogeneous co processing computing model[3]. The framework is designed such that the
sequential part of the application runs on the CPU and the computationally intensive part is
accelerated by the GPU. From the user s point of view, the application is faster because it is using the
better performance of the GPU to improve its own performance. Figure1: Core comparison
between CPU and GPU 3. Architecture Since GPUs have large number of resources with hundreds
of cores and thousands of threads to be utilized and have very high number of arithmetic and logical
units. Hence it provides a huge parallel architectural framework to work with. Here is a block

Henry Ford s Responsibility For Creating The American...
More than any single person of the last century, Henry Ford can take responsibility for creating the
American middle class. We can thank him or curse him, but either way, we have to acknowledge the
impact Henry Ford had on our society. You might not know that Henry Ford did not start out as a
successful producer of automobiles. After building his first car, the Quadricycle. In 1899 he formed
the Detroit Automobile Company, which quickly failed after only a few vehicles were produced.
Henry and some of his original investors regrouped and formed the Henry Ford Company which
quickly ran into problems as well. Henry Ford was dismissed by his board of directors from the
company that carried his name because of his inability to bring a car to production. The company was
reorganized as the Cadillac Motor Car Company under the engineering leadership of Henry Leland. In
1903 Henry Ford felt he was ready to market an automobile for the public and the Ford Motor
Company was incorporated, this time with only $28,000 in cash put up by a new group of investors.
That original investment was spent down to $300 before the company s first car was sold, but from
that time on the company was a success. In October of 1908 Henry Ford proclaimed I will build a
motor car for the common man, and that s when the Model T was born. In the 19 years of the Model T
s existence, Ford built more than 15 million of the Model T and they were sold around the world. In

Alain De Botton Analysis
Alain de Botton states that humorists is not only to entertain its readers, but to convey a deeper
meaning that is dangerous or impossible to state directly.... which serves a vital function in society .
Alain de Botton is right! Humor is an important part of society because it freely brings light to topics
that are often ignored in society. Humorists are an important part of our society, not only does one get
entertainment from it, but like De Bottom states, also draw attention to topics that are usually ignored
and create a more understanding towards them. No more dry and factual information given out. The
ability for humorists to draw attention to topics without getting in trouble for them helps them
overcome their limits and break a barrier that society has built. Stand up comedies are huge example
of how humorist is an important part of society. Comedian gives audience something to laugh about
while educating and making one think about real issues in society like racism, religion, drugs, etc.

The Problem Of The Subprime Crisis
Currently, we are recovering from one of the worst recessions the United States and the world
economies have ever seen. Known as The Great Recession, the period of falling employment,
spending, saving and rising interest rates, officially lasted from December 2007 June of 2009.
However, the effects were felt severely numerous years after, and are still being resolved and learned
from today. Normally, the housing sector of the United States market leads the economy out of a
recession, being one of the few forms of spending almost exclusively domestic. Also, housing leads to
a spur of other jobs including raw material distribution, construction, contracting, and real estate. The
subprime mortgage crisis is argued to be the cause of the Great Recession and one of the main
inhibitors of finding a solution quickly. What caused the subprime crisis, and why was it so
detrimental even on a world scale? There are many hypotheses, some are proven through economic
law and some are ideas based off of human nature. The Subprime Crisis is known as the fall of the
housing market resulting in a record number of foreclosures and families declaring bankruptcy. This
was a direct result of banks being able to produce money too quickly. Due to an influx of loans and
high interest rates, banks were able to create enough money for mortgage loans for people with weak
credit, a subprime mortgage. If interest rates remained at the current price and the value of the housing
market remained high,

  • 2. Modernism In The Big Two-Hearted River By Ernest Hemmingway The topic of war is predominately associated with the history of the world. However, in English literature, the theme of war is chronicled in various ways that explain past occurrences and retells stories that occurred in history. One vital genre within English literature is Modernism; formed in the period of war to convey messages that focus on the psychological aftermaths of the conflicts. Modernism is literarily defined as the intentional philosophical divergence of the literature and arts of the olden times, which occurred in the 20th century, with a shift towards an avant garde style and movements (Dictionary.com). One famous literary work to come out of this thought change was The Big Two Hearted River by Ernest Hemmingway. Hemmingway belonged to the pioneer writing members of the modernist genre known as the Lost Generation. This cohort believed in literature that focused internally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Great War, as it is famously known, caused a major cultural shift. It had the consequences of breaking the social norms that existed at that time and was replaced with newer ways of interaction with the world. The war prompted the society to be more experimental and convinced them to embrace the unfamiliarity of individualism. The people saw war as a constant and therefore were actively looking for means to escape this reality. As the lost generation focused their literature on the inner workings of their consciousness, so did the society, but wholesomely. Due to this fact, the Modernist writers cultivated the core and fundamental virtues of that era that is how the inner consciousness functions and how it affects the self. The Big Two Hearted River by Hemmingway is a perfect example of this Modernism shift since it describes the life of a soldier coming back from war, in the quest of serenity after the mental torment suffered during the ... • 4. Restless Giant Chapter Summary Kiana Wade Book Review 6 Nov 2105 Restless Giant, a book written by James T. Patterson, provides us with a concise and historically correct assessment of the time period of the twenty seven years between the resignation of Richard Nixon and the election of George W. Bush. Patterson makes it a point to provide for us the relational ties between the social, economical, cultural, political aspects of life in America. Patterson begins his narrative by placing us in the troubled 70s. He describes the 1970s as grim, tasteless years that are best put out of mind. (p. 13) The mood of the 1970s was described as gloomy, gaudy and depressing. The issue of race remained the nation s number one problem. During this time there were only two ... Patterson also talks about the moral decline and the younger generation. He notes that, a number of public school seemed out of control, (p. 45) doing things such as swearing in the classrooms and on the streets, spray painting buildings and using drugs and alcohol. Then there was the topic of sex. It seemed to be advancing in the culture almost as rapidly as violence, says Patterson. Their was a decline in sexual morality. The sexual themes on TV seemed to be advancing. Patterson gives us some examples: Mary Tyler Moore Show and Charlie s Angels. Television shows likes these reflected a sexualizing of the culture. (p.46) Patterson later talks about the rapid rise in divorce rates and the increase of number of births happening outside of marriage. During this time agitation for women s rights were at an all time high. Many women began to work and speak out against sexual discrimination. All these controversies over sex and family life would have been cause enough for concern even in sunny economic times. (p. 58) Patterson goes on to discuss the economic problems of this period. The stagflation persisted into the 1980s. This was a result of the structural changes in the economy. It went from a manufacturing base to a post industrial society that depended on services. • 5. Tsar Bomba Research Paper Tsar bomba, a.k.a. Hydrogen bomb, is the most powerful nuclear weapon ever to be created. The leading scientists for the soviets Andrei Sakharov, Yakov Borisovich Zel dovich, Yulii Borisovich Khariton, and Yuri Trutnev are the physicists most credited for its creation. The Tsar Bomba was first tested in 1961 above Mityushikha Bay; all 50 megatons and 60,000 pounds of it was dropped 13,000 feet in the air and the power from the tsar bomb was 10 times stronger than all the explosives used in WWⅡ combined. If the United States were free to study and work for innovations to excel our nuclear program and keep us on the brink of the future, we would be second to none and our world would be much safer. But with the above information questions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The last time, and only time a nuclear bomb was used in combat was August 6,1945. That day was considered America s bravest time and not in a good way, to launch a weapon with such power has to come with true commitment, and the realization that you could be killing thousands of innocent people. Nuclear bombs are always considered morally wrong when used, because of the effect they have on a country not only are you killing thousands of people innocent or not, you are destroying the infrastructure or the heart of an entire nation. America has gone far with the nuclear exploration done so far , but if the restrictions were lifted and we had people who could properly think through tough situations, who knows what could be accomplished. maybe it doesn t have to end with nuclear weapons maybe it could transfer towards new and efficient ways to use nuclear power; but I urge you to go and make yourself heard to make the world safer and a more efficient place to ... • 6. Predestination Social Contract Predestination and the Social Contract: A Monstrous Combination Eighteenth century French theologian Cornelius Jansen was famous for his principle of predestination: humans are either fated to suffer, or they are not. In other words, he believed that no number of good acts can save one who is predestined to suffer. Another hotly debated philosophy of the time period was that of nature versus nurture. If one s personality is determined entirely by his nature, then no amount of social influence should be able to alter this predetermined character, a perspective not unlike that of Jansenism. On the other hand, Romantic philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau is famous for his belief that human beings are inherently good, but are corrupted by the evils ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The village is in a state of senseless panic, as evidenced by Shelley s words roused, fled, and attacked. Of course, one can assume that the Creature s abnormality frightened the villagers. Fear is, according to psychologist Mary C. Lamia, PhD, the most powerful emotion. When the villagers react with their primal instinct to fear the hideous Creature, they transform his benign approach into a battle. In fact, Mary Shelley finesses her diction to show war imagery when the Creature explains how [he] retreated and found a shelter... from the barbarity of man. The word retreated characterizes an offensive defensive relationship between the Creature and the villagers. Not only does a hostile relationship now exist between the Creature and civilians, but the Creature feels the need to protect himself from their barbarity. For this first civilian interaction, Shelley draws a stark contrast between the villagers preconception of the Creature and his true nonconfrontational nature: even though the Creature is bigger, stronger, and could probably counter their attacks, he chooses to retreat. At this point, the Creature does not know that his appearance leaves him vulnerable to unchecked prejudice, but a fundamental idea has been engrained in his mind: these humans are not his friends. Humanity, thanks to its overwhelming tendency to prejudge, has made a bitter first impression. A major step in the decision making process is weighing costs and benefits. The Creature wants to present himself as good enough to live among humans, so he educates himself and learns language through observing the De Lacy family. However, when the Creature attempts to introduce himself, his already fragile impression of humankind is shattered. The Creature put much effort into gaining approval from the De Lacys, but reaped no benefit. He laments to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Auden Vs Ginsberg Literature has a lengthy history of odds and ends that get categorized by critics as unworthy of widespread study, yet some are the most brilliant statements of their time. W. H. Auden s book length poem The Age of Anxiety won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1948. It, along with Allen Ginsberg s poem Howl, are diamonds that are often disregarded by literary critics and the public as worthless rough. Each piece was a major breakthrough in its time. Auden and Ginsberg both attempted to define the period of time and turmoil that they lived in as members of the other in their respective societies. Both make booming battle cries for a generation, fit well into places of deserved canonical respect, and receive influence from political and personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Its worth is hotly debated. W. B. Yeats and T. S. Eliot were contemporaries of Auden s, and being a part of that legendary group is close to an automatic deservance of being a canonical poet. Alternate views from critics either list him as the worst of the three, yet others argue strongly that Auden was the greatest poet of the entire 20th century for what he could do with words and form. Content in the book length poem speak volumes of the talent that the American immigrant had. He created something that is hotly debated as both a failure and his greatest accomplishment, and uncertainty in making that decision make it all the more worthy to be in the canon. His uncertainty is the only real part of the poem as Auden s character laments that The less I feel/The more I mind (commentary mag). The best works are pieces that make one think about their worth. Characters that seem to mean little actually have a lot to say with what they do as well as their words. Little happens, but the characters actions comment on major themes of the human being. Halting speeches and words take the reader inside of the mind as frailties become clear. What this poem has to say is vastly important once one gets past the errors in form. Psychological and social problems are concerns that Age of Anxiety covers. Verse should be neither too free nor too formed, as human experience is also neither: breath and ... • 8. Increased Rates of Teen Pregnancy among Minorities Increased rates of teen pregnancy among minorities The incidence of teen births in the United States has reached a historic all time low throughout the last couple of years but teen girls are still giving birth to 1700 babies a week. However, minorities are still amongst the highest group of teenagers having children among the age group between 15 and 19 years of age. The highest ethnic groups were comprised of Hispanics and Non Hispanic blacks making up 57% of all US teen births in 2011, according to a study done by the CDC in 2011. American Indians and Alaskan Natives had the third highest birth rates at about 36 births per 1000 females. The smallest occurrence of teen births per 1000 came from the Asian/Pacific Islander population. However, the continuously low population group with teen pregnancies involved White individuals so the question remains, why are most minority groups more likely to give birth within their teenage years? Research shows that about 80 percent of all the teenagers between the age group of 15 17 had no formal sexual education before their first sexual experience. Regardless of their ethnicity, all students can be affected by the lack of sexual education at their respected school. Interestingly enough, President Obama has recently cut the budget for abstinence only sex education. However, this was done because current research indicates that abstinence only programs do not prevent or delay teen sex. Many teens say that their schools tend to use ... • 10. Popular Mechanics 1. What is the title of the text and what is the text about? The title of the text is Popular Mechanics, and is about a man and woman fighting over their baby right before their separation. The fight turns physical, with the man and woman each pulling on the baby, and ends when the man gives it one final hard pull. 2. What is the author s view? How do I know? The author s view is that when people fight, they can end up wanting to win for winning s sake, disregarding their negative impact on people around them, even those that they love. I deduced this from the way that the author presented the actions of the man and woman. It appears that the man may have overlooked the baby altogether had the woman not taken away the baby s picture. And then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the story starts with an ominous tone because the author chooses to describe the water as dirty, and the environment becoming dark. The evidence presented by the author is valid if it feels realistic. For the evidence to feel realistic, I have to be able to empathize with the characters during their struggles, and be able to picture the described events happening in the real world. In this case, Carver does a good job painting a realistic environment and allowing the characters to behave realistically, such that their brutal actions are believable. 5. Is the evidence relevant? How do I know? There may have been events described that were not directly relevant to the author s view, but since overall the story paints a convincing picture of the author s view, there must have been enough relevant evidence ... Colin Kaepernick took this risk, by kneeling during the national anthem to stand up against police brutality and the inequality that people of color (NFL). With many unjust shootings and police beatings of African Americans, Kaepernick s teammate Eric Reid couldn t stand the violence anymore after the killing of Alton Sterling in my hometown Baton Rouge, La (Reid). Racial inequality will always be a huge topic in the United States of America, and continues today to still be a huge topic. What they are known less for is the large quantity of invasive species that also now inhabit the island thanks to man coming to and from the island with only himself in mind. Since this issue has been noticed, transport to and from the islands has become quite regulated and limited in the hopes of slowing this disaster in the works. This is seeming to work but it isn t unlikely that all threats will be eradicated since humans will inevitably inhabit the island (Santoso, 2014). Highly skilled game wardens were trained and implemented with helicopters and GIS mapping to employ aerial hunting and scanning to hunt all goats to extinction on the islands. The goats quickly associated the helicopters with death and began hiding from them. Judas goats were then introduced. The placement of streets and the structures built there are carefully plotted for optimal use. Foot and cart traffic, fire hazard, and access to water were all key factors in city planning. Eventually the Romans had fine tuned their design principals in such an advantageous way that they molded all of their city states similarly. Comparing Wilkie Collins The Moonstone And A Taste For Hard In 1944 the literary critic Edmund Wilson wrote an exasperated essay in the pages of The New Yorker titled Why Do People Read Detective Stories? Wilson, who at the time was about to go abroad to cover the allied bombing campaign on Germany, felt that he had grown out the detective genre at the age of twelve, by that time he had read through the stories from the early masters of the detective genre, Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle. Even tho everyone he knew seemed to be addicted the genre. More even than the stories of Poe or Doyle, the early work that to Eliot served as a model for the genre was The Moonstone, by Wilkie Collins, a sprawling melodrama about the theft and recovery of an Indian diamond, which appeared in serial installments in Charles Dickens s All the Year Round magazine in 1868. In his introduction to the 1928 Oxford World Classics edition of the novel, Eliot called it the first, the longest and the best of modern English detective novels. (This blurb still adorns Oxford paperback editions.) The story is full of protracted plot twists and portentous cliffhangers, many of them not of particular relevance to the mystery at hand; we are told as much about the reading habits of the house steward, a fan of Robinson Crusoe, and the fraught romance between the handsome Franklin Blake and the impetuous Rachel Verinder, as we are about the circumstances surrounding the heist. For Eliot, such digressions helped lend the mystery an intangible human element. In a review written in the January, 1927, issue of The Criterion, he claimed that all good detective fiction tends to return and approximate to the practice of Wilkie ... It seemed as if the loudness was just getting louder and louder. Finally, I stumbled out of bed, turning my alarm off. After I got dressed, I went downstairs to pack my mother s amazing cookies for school. Her secret is adding the right measure of mixing because mixing develops gluten in the sugar, making the cookies a chewy consistency, adding the right measure of shape because round dough balls take longer to bake, resulting in softer, thicker cookies, besides adding the correct amount of spacing because cookies baked at low temperatures spread more during baking and need approximately 2 inches between them. It also depends on the temperature, and the quantity of time you bake them for because a low temperature and longer baking time yield crisper, thinner cookies; a higher heat and shorter baking time makes softer, thicker cookies. My mom taught me these rules of cooking when I was around five. What can I say, I guess I just have a way of cooking. When I got downstairs, I checked to weather to make sure I could wear shorts today. I swear the heat outside has been unbearable lately! 103 for three days straight has been ridiculous. In the same night, hundreds of thousands of girls say goodnight to their fellow sorority sisters before crawling into their beds. As a Panhellenic community, University of Nebraska gives girls the opportunities to create friendships, form connections, and build strong women. We are called to be active members of society, and use our fortunate lives to change the world we live in. After visiting Community First! Village of Austin, Texas, it has become aware to me the severity of homelessness in America and how simple it can be to change it. Community First! not only builds tiny homes through donations for homeless people around Austin, but gives them a community to become a part of. Community First! Village is sponsored by Mobile Loaves Fishes, a catholic charity that has has grown to working every night, all year long, providing food, clothing, and hygiene products to the homeless in surrounding cities of Austin. Although most people have heard of depression, very few people can depict its symptoms and effective treatment methods. The Book of Job appears to be one of the earliest works of literature regarding depression. Kapusta and Frank discuss a number of reasons why Job appears to be depressed ranging from his dysphoric mood to his poor appetite, restlessness, and reduced sexual drive. Although Job may have been depressed, he was able to overcome his depression through support from Elihu and God. Kapusta and Frank s portrayal of Job as a depressed person who is comforted by Elihu is effective for today s reader as it teaches people the importance of looking out for their friends. Furthermore, Job teaches us that just because someone is suffering, it does not mean that the person deserves what is happening to them. On the other hand, Kapusta and Frank s portrayal of Job is also effective for modern readers who are experiencing depression, since the Book of Job shows that despite Job s depression, he did not give up on his life. For instance, in Job 2:10, Job says we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil meaning that God does not will evil on us (King James Version). Creating A Blue Ocean Strategy According to Michael Porter, a company strategist who understands that competition extends well beyond existing rivals will detect wider competitive threats and be better equipped to address them (Porter, 2008, p.16). Thinking comprehensively about the structure of the industry as well as its customers can afford companies the ability to obtain superior performance. Therefore, it is key for companies to focus on how to maintain existing customers as well as lure new ones. Three tiers of non customers As we have learned from our readings, to create a blue ocean strategy means to reach out to untapped market space, demand creation, and the opportunity for highly profitable growth (Kim Mauborgne, 2005, p.4). These blue ocean strategies can exist beyond existing industries/markets or they can be expanded upon in existing markets (red oceans). Either way, companies need to go beyond competing (p.5). To do so companies should identify and attract non customers. The three tiers of non customers identify different level of non customers companies can attract to convert them into new customers. He describes what it is like to be at the bottom of that city s tough social hierarchy, giving vivid descriptions of how class imposes severe limitations and restrictions. It is this topic, this theme, to which I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though Frank shows promise at school, showing a quick mind and naturally reaching for more demanding literature, he is denied the opportunity to become an altar boy. He is denied the chance of obtaining the higher education he hungers for. It is important to understand how deeply rooted the class system in Great Britain including Ireland, was in the beginning of the 20th century. In modern Europe it is difficult to identify the classes that, during the first half of the century, were extremely socially significant. It is also difficult to comprehend the extreme poverty of the Depression years. There was no unemployment insurance, no health insurance and there were no safety nets for the poor. They were left to their own devices. Their source of protection from abject poverty and starvation was primarily the church. Otherwise the poor were left at the mercy of friends and family, and on a daily basis had to swallow their pride. With regard to getting out of this vicious cycle of poverty and starvation, again it was the church that had the primary responsibility for and control over education. As has been noted Frank s attempts at becoming a part of the social and religious system that could take him out of poverty were disrupted by that same system. Frank s struggle for acceptance and participation in the higher social groups is essential for an analytical understanding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Likewise in Unfolding Bud it is comparing an unfolding bud to poetry, gradually unfolding. In both the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay and the poem Unfolding Bud the author uses nature to develop the theme of living life to it s fullest by using comparisons, symbolism, and imagery. The poem Unfolding Bud conveys the theme of enjoying the golden part of your life with the use of analogy. The author writes, One is not amazed, At a first glance, By a poem, Which is as tight closed As a tiny bud. This quote shows the author comparing a poem to a tightly closed flower bud. The Influence Of The Delian League The Delian League was an alliance formed by the Ancient Greek city states to form a mutual defense against a common enemy, the Persians (www.FlowofHistory.com, n.d.). The goal of the Delian League was to fortify Greece s defenses from its foreign enemies (mainly via a strong navy); and the League was largely successful at achieving this goal. There is about 2.5 million SF of retail space in major centers located within five miles of the site. About 40% of this space is within three miles of the site. The further away the center is from the redevelopment site the less likely it will provide competition with Truman s Marketplace. • 40. A Woman Under The Influence A Woman Under the Influence is an American dramatic film that was written in an entangled way to illustrate a story. The auteur John Cassavetes wrote and directed this film that was released in November of 1974. Cassavetes spent most of his career creating films that were more off the grid ; A Woman Under the Influence is a prime example considering there was no other American film quite comparable to it. This was a rare film because the internal fluctuations effectively allowed formulating of the primary configurations. John Cassavetes rejected the elements and techniques of the American movie and created his own method (LoBrutto). Cassavetes is known to be the pioneer of American independent film. Independent filmmaking is difficult to establish an exact definition mostly because it does not follow a set of specific guidelines. Conversely independent films are commonly designated to be character driven, and these were the films that frequently had an extremely low budget. A Woman Under the Influence and some of Cassavetes other films demonstrate in a similar form of bstylistic characterizations of post World War II European film. Independent filmmakers typically viewed their films as a film as an art form or as a business film. Nonetheless Cassavetes undoubtedly viewed his films as a form of art. America is known for being the land of opportunity where typically the favored goal of the people is acquiring wealth for a better lifestyle and future. Although college may not be for everyone, there are those who would really like to gain acceptance to an institution, but cannot because they do not have the money to do so. Located deep in the Nazca Dessert in southern Peru lies one of the most identifiable archeological sites when it comes to evidence for aliens being among in the past; the Nazca Lines. Known as The Great Recession, the period of falling employment, spending, saving and rising interest rates, officially lasted from December 2007 June of 2009. However, the effects were felt severely numerous years after, and are still being resolved and learned from today. Normally, the housing sector of the United States market leads the economy out of a recession, being one of the few forms of spending almost exclusively domestic. Also, housing leads to a spur of other jobs including raw material distribution, construction, contracting, and real estate. The subprime mortgage crisis is argued to be the cause of the Great Recession and one of the main inhibitors of finding a solution quickly. What caused the subprime crisis, and why was it so detrimental even on a world scale? There are many hypotheses, some are proven through economic law and some are ideas based off of human nature. The Subprime Crisis is known as the fall of the housing market resulting in a record number of foreclosures and families declaring bankruptcy. This was a direct result of banks being able to produce money too quickly.
