The play No Exit, by Jean Paul Sartre is about three people that die and go to hell. Joseph Garcin,
a journalist executed by a firing squad for trying to desert during a war; Inez Serrano, a post
office clerk murdered by her lover which left a gas stove on while she slept; and Estelle Rigault,
a woman who married an older rich man and died due to pneumonia. They all expected physical
torture in hell. However, all they found was a plain room with some furniture that always had
the light on, no windows, no beds, nothing that would reflect or work as a mirror. The three of
them were trapped inside the room. After discussing among themselves, they confessed their
crimes and deduced that the torture was psychological. They also realized that they had been

reminded of a New York Citystyle apartment which was short, made of rustic red brick,
displaying rounded window followed by having that tinted brown giving it that old and dirty
look. Then there was a sudden switch as I came across 1675 Douglas Street s Terasen Gas
Building. The Terasen Gas building was very generic and modern office looking building. This
type of building was one where if you came across a photo of it, you wouldn t be able to pin
point where it came from, meaning it could be anywhere in the world. The last and top favourite
building that struck out to me was Centennial Square s City Hall building. This building was my
favourite for various reasons one being able to capture that Eurocentric feel that happens to be
one of my favourite styles of buildings. It also really captured the eye with its bold red brick

METHODS: To collect data I used two methods, participant observation and surveys. For
participant observation, I went to Oliver Hall to get my food and observe other students
interactions with the workers. I was able to observe and participate six times for about 30
minutes each session, and each time I was able to interact in meaningful and respectful
conversations with each worker I came into contact. Since it was my own experience, I was able
to take notes after I sat down on the table closest to the entrance, and then I took notes on who
walked in, how many people they walked in with, and which worker was working. At first I

When watching Citizen Kane, the audience nearly doesn t need dialogue to enhance or intertitles to
explain the events that unfold. The excellent cinematography alone tells the story to the viewer.
The audience s awareness of the plot is due to the techniques behind the screen, the lens used, the
composition, every technical and artistic decision made (Cowan 90). Modern films might be driven
by words and accented by fancy color technology, but in this film, we the audience are able to
derive emotions and the inner psychology of characters through lighting, spatial narration, and the
ever famous technique of deep focus.
As with any non color film, the right lighting is absolutely crucial. We might wonder if it would
have been half as effective in color as it was in black and white, as the stark differences of the
chiaroscuro lighting add a tremendous amount to the characterization of Charles Foster Kane. For

This film is considered a pioneer of this technique (Hinrichs 60), although not the first time it d
been utilized. For example, it had been used on the titular character of the film Nosferatu to give
him a sense of foreboding (Cook 101). Gregg Toland, the director of photography on Citizen Kane,
had also used the technique before on his other films, such as his first film, Palmy Days (Cowan
87). It might be said that all these tremendous feats of cinematography, and therefore the success
and critical praise of the film, are due more to Toland than Welles (Cowan 84). Either way, this film
would undoubtedly not be as monumental without this extraordinary technique. It allowed for
scenes to be more dramatic and for the enriching of them through the lightning mix (Cook 330).
Interactions are layered, the plot grows more comprehensive, and yet it s all done through an
unmoving camera truly

Sholeh Wolpe s I Was Sung Into This World
Sholeh Wolpe has written two poems that both explore death. During a question and answer
session with poet, Sholeh Wolpe, I was informed that her poem I Was Sung Into This World was
written from personal experience. Therefore, following the session, I was able to form connections
and draw a contrast between two poems. I Was Sung into This World was inspired by personal
experience where she contributes her own thoughts about death. However, She Forgot is written
from third person point of view where she reveals other s feelings towards death. Beds often stand

Cancer patients and the elderly can never estimate the exact date and time death will come for
them. Even when people prepare themselves for it, each individual s reaction to it will still vary.
The use of either song or dance by Angels are presented in both poems to show how Angels
welcome those crossing over, but the characters contrasts regarding their response to death when it
presents itself. The tone in She Forgot contrasts the tone in I Was Sung into This World . Overall, it
becomes very clear that the two individuals in both poems have very different attitudes towards
