Symbols Of Death In Halloween
Symbols of death have been commonplace in western cultures since their inception. However, the way
in which these symbols are interpreted have gone through significant changes as the human
relationship to death has progressed. This relationship has been fundamentally shaped by interactions
with disease, war, and varying levels of technology, which influences the amount of death individuals
encounter throughout their lives. This intersectionality of causal factors, symbolism, and interpretation
of the human condition, is continually illustrated through different cultural means, especially art and
décor and holidays. In the post war to contemporary period, Death has been largely removed from
Western cultures, particularly North America and Europe, as technological advancements, and the
sanitization of the public gaze have occurred. However, an indirect relationship to death still persists
through cultural interactions with Halloween. Analysis of the spaces in which death is opening
described, visualized, and indirectly interacted, need to occur to create a larger understanding the roots
of western cultural practices, and to understand the problematic aspects of the spectacle of death
through commodification.
Within the historical trajectory of Halloween the connections to death and human mortality are
abundantly apparent. Though there are many examples of cultural practices or holidays that celebrate
or commemorate death globally, the origins of Halloween can be directly

The Derogatory Effects Of Pride On Human Life
The derogatory effects of pride on human life is an idea that runs through William Shakespeare s play
Julius Caesar. Caesar himself is consumed by pride, and the way that others treat him only reinforces
his idea that his is the strongest man in the world, and certainly the only man fit to lead Rome. Caesar
s ambition, which was caused by his pride, convinces Brutus that, despite his love for Caesar, Caesar
would only hurt Rome, and therefore must die. More than that, however, Caesar s pride directly causes
his downfall. Throughout Julius Caesar, Shakespeare shows the audience how Caesar s pride blinds
him to signs and omens that would otherwise cause him worry. Soothsayers in Ancient Rome were
very well respected. The words of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The audience can assume that his pride is the main reason that he ignored the soothsayer s words.
Caesar, as evident by his prompt dismissal of a man warning him of his own demise, sees himself as
above the common folk, and above the influence of the fates. This trait, which he exhibits on several
occasions, eventually leads to his end.
Similar to how soothsayers had a very significant role in Roman society, dreams also played a large
part in the daily lives of Roman citizens. On the eve of the ides of March, Calphurnia has a nightmare
foreshadowing Caesar s inevitable assassination. According to Caesar, Nor heaven nor earth have been
at peace tonight/Thrice hath Calphurnia in her sleep cried out/ Help, ho! They murder Caesar! (JC
2.2.1 3). He recognizes the strangeness of the events that are going on, but he seems to not accept
them. Despite this, he still has a servant contact priests to decide his course for the day. In saying this
he is showing apprehension about the strange omens, and is attempting to take precautionary measures
against bad luck. However, despite this seeming change of heart, a few lines later Caesar has already
made up his mind to approach the day as if these omens had never happened. In his mind, nothing can
harm him. He makes this clear by saying The things that threatened me/Ne er looked but on my back.
When they shall see/The face of Caesar, they are vanished. (JC 2.2.10 12). He, despite these bad

TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY EFFECTS ON COMPOSITE MATERIAL PROPERTIES
ANSHUL and RAHUL
ABSTRACT
This paper discusses the different properties of composite materials under static testing condition to
determine the effect of aging due to change in temperature and moisture content. Effects on tensile,
shear, impact, stiffness and fatigue parameters are studied. For each property, application specific
composite materials are taken into consideration with different stacking sequence and number of plies.
Different samples of these are then introduced to different hygrothermal environments for example:
temperatures ranging from 50 degree Celsius to +50 degree Celsius or kept in wet conditions for 24
hours at different temperatures of 21, 37 and 50 degree Celsius etc. Different tests are performed
based on the material property to observe a change from the initial unaged specimen. To study every
property a different test method is discussed. A final comparison for each property between the unaged
and aged specimen is shown in order to see the property s dependence on temperature and moisture.
This comparison highlights the temperature and moisture dependent properties and showcase a trend.
Properties like tensile modulus, shear modulus, shear strength, flexural stiffness and fatigue life show
a decrease with increase in temperature and moisture content while Poisson s ratio and impact strength
increase with increase in temperature and moisture content.

The Conflict Of The Niger Delta
INTRODUCTION TO THE CONFLICT IN THE NIGER DELTA
Nigeria is the 7th world largest oil producer and is a major player in the world energy market. Oil and
gas is Nigeria s main source of revenue. It accounts for about 40% of the Gross Domestic Product and
70% of government revenues (Lawal 2004). Crude oil was first discovered in 1956 by Shell British
Petroleum in a small village called Oloibiri present day Bayelsa State. Two years later oil in larger
quantities was discovered in Ogoni.
The Niger delta region has a population of 28 million people, a coverage of 70,000 square kilometers
consisting of 606 fields, 5,284 wells, 7,000 kilometers of pipelines, 10 export terminals, 275 flow
stations and a liquefied natural gas sector (Williams 2011). The Niger delta which is Nigeria s oil belt
has been embroiled in conflict and resistance against the government and multinational oil
corporations that extract oil in the region. The Niger delta is highly volatile with insurgent groups
controlling the area. Years of oil exploitation, environmental degradation and neglecting by the states
has created an impoverished, marginalized and exploited region which has produced resistance form
the youth in the Niger delta region. A regime of state repression and corporate violence has further
generated popular criminal violence, lawlessness, illegal appropriations and insecurity (Williams
2011).
Conflict in the Niger delta arose in the early 1990 s due to tension between the foreign oil

Merck Essay
Merck Co., Inc. Case
If one hold a key to resolve a very serious problem, one has a responsibility to put an effort to make it
happen, at least try one s best. In this case, river blindness disease was a very serious problem, and Dr.
Vagelos was the one who could make a decision as to whether the research and development of a
human version of ivermectin should be carried on, then it was his responsibility to pursue it. Caused
by a parasitic worm carried by a tiny black fly, the disease brought about visual impairment and skin
lesions to millions of people. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated in 1978 that some
340,000 people were blind because of onchocerciasis, and that a million more were suffered from

In fact, Merck employees found the words inspirational. Setting a goal to alleviate the pain of millions
of afflicted people in the Third World will consolidate the company s culture and uplift employees
morale. In addition to that, this is not the first time that the company will give something back to the
community: Merck had already donated considerable quantities of streptomycin to Japan, which had
faced especially high levels of tuberculosis in the aftermath of the World War II a philanthropy that
was repeated in 1958 when the Merck Medical Outreach Program donated antibiotics, antiparasitic
agents and vaccines for humanitarian efforts in developing countries and disaster zones (Rea, Zhang,
amp; Baras, 2010) That is to say, if the company sees this program through, it will do a great service
to the world once again. Second of all, the approval of the pursuit of the human version of ivermactin
does not mean that he has to fund the program all at once or fund it with a big amount of money that
will consequently affect other developments or other lines of production. The funding can be from the
profits that the company made in the previous year. In fact, according to the case, annual net revenue
has increased every year in the past ten years. The funding for this project can be some kind of a long
term plan. It is better to initiate the funding that last a long

Marketing Audit Starbucks
Marketing Audit – Starbucks Stores
R. J. Yung
Marketing Management
March 13, 2006
Executive Summary Since its foundation in 1971, Starbucks has been working uncompromisingly to
achieve the company objective of becoming the world s leading coffee brand. Having gone through
various stages of growing pain, today the Company is operating with over 10,000 stores in 37
countries. Starbucks success was mostly a direct result of its aggressive expansion plan, that
consequently turned the Starbucks coffee beverages into a most familiar and popular world leading
brand. Although Starbucks has been successful over the past 34 years, there are some potential
drawbacks as identified on this Marketing Audit that might warrant some careful ... Show more

Consequently, this group of consumers possesses the greatest growth potential. In connection with this
growth potential, Starbucks also started Hear Music Coffeehouse stores that offer in store music CD
burning services. Starbucks further started to open Media Bars where customers can create their own
mix of CDs. This is Starbucks first phase of a multi phased national rollout (Starbucks, 2006). Most
likely these creative efforts will boost growth from the younger patorns and music lovers.
On the other hand, the older generations may be reluctant to be attracted to Starbucks. Rather, they
may just visit a local coffee shop instead. Therefore this market segment may not grow as fast as the
younger generations. Furthermore, a market segment that has declining potential is the busy working
professionals. Because of their busy schedule, these working professionals, males and females alike,
may just brew their own coffees in the office space. Another discouraging factor is the much higher
price of Starbucks coffee products. As a general rule, Starbucks does not offer promotional prices on
its products, which tend to be higher than those of competitors (Wikipedia, 2006). As people grow
older, they may be more conscientious to their spending. Regardless of continued future growth
potentials, Starbucks faces some drawbacks. In an effort to increase sales, Starbucks started to print

Evie-Personal Narrative Analysis
1962; it was a brand new year and Evie was filled with optimism for continued success on our path to
prosperity. It is a well known fact that it usually does not snow in winter in the Bay Area and although
the weather was damp and chilly, for sure, it was not like the bitter cold winters in Holland.
Nevertheless, on January 21, 1962, there was snowfall in Redwood City! Noke jokingly accused us of
bringing the snow from Holland. It was the news sensation of the year, snow in the Bay Area, the local
news was inundated with videos and stories of the unusual snow covered coastal hills and in our own
garden, it was stunning to see a lemon bush with juicy, ripe fruit blanketed in the glistening snow. The

Peak Expiratory Flow Rate
Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) is a measure of how much a person can breathe out in a single large
breath. PEFR is used as a clinical tool to test the functionality of a patient s lung, the severity of
asthma or other respiratory illness symptoms and the best course of treatment for the patient. The
PEFR reading will be lower when a person s airways are constricted and should be at its highest when
the patient is at full health. The PEFR is measured using a small handheld device known as a peak
flow meter. PEFR is dependent on a person s gender, age, height, weight, smoker status as well as
other factors. The relationship between PEFR and height is a commonly accepted and studied positive
linear relationship. Dharamshi et al (2015) studied the relationship between height, waist to hip ratio
and weight in regards to recorded PEFR values in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They found that height was the most strongly correlated factor to do with an increase in the PEFR
value recorded. They also suggest that other factors such as regional and environmental factors may
also effect the PEFR values obtained and further studies should be done in that area. This study
strongly indicates a statistically significant positive linear relationship between height and PEFR
values. As a result of these findings it was clear there was some kind of relationship between height
and PEFR. To test this, data was taken from a class of biology students. PEFR values before and after
exercise, their smoker status, age, gender, height, weight as well as other relevant information were
recorded and narrowed down to a particular group of people to compare their PEFR values and height
to determine whether there was in fact a positive linear relationship between height and PEFR. Using
the information from previous studies a hypothesis was

Meaning Of Words In Adah s A Silent Vow
Has a speech ever been presented that was very meaningful, but was also short and cut straight to the
point? The proverb words should be weighed, not counted perfectly shows that. When someone is
giving advice, a person doesn t just sit there and count the amount of words that are being said; they
pay attention to the message and grasp the concept. This proverb originates from a Yiddish (Jewish)
author. It s understandable why he would say something like this because his ancestors went through
the Holocaust. They tried explaining how they felt, but no one (especially Hitler) listened to them
which caused them to forcefully adapt. Another example, FBLA has planned a fundraiser to sell a
product for premature babies. Their item of sale is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adah s poem is very revealing. Within the first few lines, the author wrote; But the silence of a pen on
a paper is a great sound (Adah). Although using pen and paper could be used to count the words, what
the person wrote down made a great sound . It shows that sometimes, people can t just speak their
mind; each thought needs to be written out, taking each word into deep consideration. This poem
shows that you don t have to speak literal words to get your point across. Tony states, Here I have
taken a silent vow and my pen spits liquid pellets on the faces of retreating army (Adah). Without
moving a single facial muscle, words that are written down can mean the world to the right person.
Fighting battles could be as easy as an arrangement of the alphabet 26 simple letters. Tony s work
enhances this proverb by taking a silent vow against stereotypes. Worded better than anyone else
could have, Adah says, Here where I am the commander of the silent war and the pen my silent gun
(Adah). As the author, commander, of this work of literature; Adah controls the silent gun (pen). He
battles the stereotype that one has to openly speak without thinking about what they re saying.
Contemplate all expressions; don t argue blindly. A person shouldn t think on their feet . A Silent Vow

The Central Nervous System For Spinal Cord Injuries
Introduction:
The central nervous system is what connects the brain to the muscles of the body. When a patient has
an injury to the spinal cord, movements in certain parts of the body will be affected based on the
location of the injury. If the injury affects hand motion then many day to day tasks are affected. This
literature review seeks to understand how an injury to the spinal cord impacts movement, and what
has been done so far to help those affected by spinal cord injuries.
Methods:
The information in this literature review was collected from an expert interview and the search
databases Science Direct, PubMed, and Google Scholar. The expert for the expert interview was
selected based on experience with designing prosthetics for individuals that had lost their hand and
potentially part of their arm (Birdwell, 2016). The databases were searched using keywords spinal
cord injury , hand movement , and fine motor movement . In PubMed the selection was also narrowed
down by selecting only studies done on humans. New terminology was searched through science
direct due to the built in function that allows for key words from the article to be selected for further
information from multiple books or journals.
Results:

Business Law Case Study
Business Law Case Study In the case presented, Biff Smith, the Chief of Police of the local
department ordered a set of bicycles off of a local storeowner, Dirk Right. This was no simple order
though, in fact Biff intended on starting a bike patrol unit within the local department. Biff went to
Dirks Bicycle shop to place an order. The order was for five mountain bikes to be used for patrol so
they had to be custom made in order to sport the police decals. Biff was very familiar with the
Schwinn bicycle company so he asked Dirk to order him five top of the line bikes at the best price .

Therefore Dirks specially ordered custom bikes for the police department upon the request from Biff
are considered specially made. The custom bikes were a special order because they contained unique
decals displaying POLICE . Therefore Dirk can enforce the oral contract against Biff despite the price
being an excess of $500, (under Revised article 2). Analyzing the case with all elements in mind, we
concluded that a contract was in fact created. Dirk, who is pursuing Biff in court, will put up a case
due to the oral contract that was indeed made. In this case there is no need for a written contract
because Biff verbally agreed to buy five Schwinn custom police mountain bikes specially ordered by
Dirk. For this non resellable goods exception to apply, the seller, Dirk, must have made a substantial
beginning in manufacturing the goods. To show this is true, Dirk went out of his way to create an
order for Biff that was special for the Police department, and by doing so, Dirk cannot return/resell the
bikes, and he is at a loss of $17,500. The most important factor working in Dirks favor is the letter he
received from the local PBA. The end of the letter had a hand written signature thanking Dirk for
ordering the bikes. This is hard evidence that a deal was made because the note brings up the
agreement for the bikes in writing and is signed by the second party, Biff. Dirk has enough evidence to
bring Biff to

the past, though mistakes have been made by even the most reputable of news providers, credibility
was maintained and public trust in the journalist industry was steady. However, with the Internet
taking its first infant steps into the reporting world, concern is being vocalized that public trust in
journalism will be damaged by mavericks, such as Matt Drudge, who, without any foundation in

National media monitors such as Howard Kurtz and Judy Mann denounce Drudge as a Cyberspace

Baltimore Sun Washington correspondent Jules Witcover has referred to him as the abomination of the

Sexual Assault Has Been The People V. Turner
It would be wrong to say violence ends when you turn the television off or act as if injustice didn t
exist anymore, but if you reflect back on 2016 so far, one of the biggest topics that often dominates the
news and blogosphere concerned the high frequency of assaults on college campuses around the
country. In the place where many young adults begin to learn who they are and who they want to be
while enjoying a comfortable freedom and safety among their peers discovered freedom and safety
could not always be guaranteed.
One of the most discussed topics surrounded sexual assault has been the People v. Turner. Brock
Turner was an undergraduate student at Stanford University in Northern California when he was
apprehended by two Swedish international students who witnessed Turner sexually assaulting an
unconscious woman.
The students who stopped Turner from continuing to assault the young woman stated that they
intervened because they could tell that the woman was clearly unconscious. Turner was then
subsequently arrested, charged and indicted on two counts of felony assault and one count of
attempted rape. However, it was the consequences that Turner faced for his actions which have upset
many.
After a jury found Turner guilty of assault and attempted rape Judge Aaron Persky of the Santa Clara
County Superior Court sentenced Turner to a meek six months confinement in the Santa Clara County
jail followed by three months of probation. After serving three months in the Santa

arteries. When this pressure is over the limits, it is very dangerous and can increase the risk of heart
failure, heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure. For that reasons I would like that you understand what
the reason of your problem is. When the heart beats too hard and fast, the levels of blood pressure
increase. In normal conditions our body has a complex system of regulation that allows the levels of
pressure back to the normal ranks. This system which is known as negative feedback is responsible for
achieving balance in our bodies even if external or internal changes occur. When any internal or
external factor makes the blood pressure rise, we have specialized cells located in the walls of some
blood vessels that are able to detect the problem and send nerve impulses to the brain which sends
nerves impulses to the heart and blood vessel that receive the information. As a result, the heart rate
decrease, the blood vessels dilate, and the blood pressure goes down. Finally, the body goes back to
the balance condition that is called homeostasis. In your case this natural process does not occur and

Self Destruction In Frankenstein
In the novel, Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, there are two constant struggles. One is the struggle
between Victor and himself; the other is between Victor and his creation. However, his creation could
be viewed as a reflection of Victor and also a reflection of his society that is driven by selfish motives
and with little or no regard for the natural order of events. Victor s creation represents the negative
consequences of trying to change natural occurrences. Victor is constantly faced with the sides and

The character of power evolves as the story unfolds moving from Victor, creator, to the

they had freedom, agreements to be released from indentured servants and free with rights. Indentured
servants were quite scarce and expensive and the issue of equal rights presented a major challenge to
developing slave states like Virginia. Indentured servants slowly became life long servants, having no

selfishly uncurious. The runner s neighbor explains she, heard the car when it came over the curb.
More or less bang on the grass. The father gets out and takes the little boy. (49) His neighbor just
witnessed a child being kidnapped, although she does not know anyone involved, she assumes the
kidnapper is the boy s father. The runner seems disinterested in both the kidnapping and his neighbor s
opinion. He seems to feel the kidnapping shouldn t concern him; he wasn t kidnapped, and he didn t
know who was. Why should he care? What the runner doesn t realize is that this affects him
emotionally and physically. This is a community concern. Whether or not the father was the kidnapper
the entire area becomes concerned with safety. The runner, without thinking, crushes his neighbor s
ideal situation even though he does not seem to care about the kidnapping. The narrator questions his
neighbor and hears her response You can t be sure, can you? I saw them both and I saw the child.
(50)When asked if she was sure the father was the kidnapper the neighbor states she saw the mother,
the child, and the kidnapper. This implies that she does not know the real situation, but is merely
projecting the most ideal situation. The viewpoint of the neighbor is interesting because our main
character disagrees with the idea that the father was just taking his child. Although this is the ideal
situation for both the child and the bystanders the runner takes a cynical view. This most likely means
he would rather

Court Case Decisions for Amendment I, IV, and VIII Essay
Amendment I: 1.) Van Orden v. Perry (2005), 545 U.S. 677, 125 S. Ct. 2854 2.) The case was brought
to state court by Thomas Van Orden over a monument that had the Ten Commandments engraved
upon it. The monument was given to the Texas government and governor Rick Perry. The monument
was erected between the State Capitol and the State Supreme Court. Van Orden argues that the
monument violates the 1st Amendment s Establishment Clause. The Establishment Clause, which is
the one of the first clauses in the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, states that the United States
Congress should not enact any law in respect to any religion. 3.) The decision of the United States

detaining Mena in handcuffs throughout the search had infringed upon her Fourth Amendment rights,
as well as questioning her citizenship. 3.) The Supreme Court ruled that the police and SWAT officers
involved had not violated Mena s 4th Amendment rights. 4.) The Supreme Court held that Mena s
detainment had not violated the 4th Amendment in any way. Officers with a search warrant for
unlawful contraband had outright authority to detain all occupants of the premises during the search
due to potential risk to the officers; having Mena and others restrained while police searched the house
for weapons and gang members was necessary for officer safety. The Court additionally held that the
officers inquiring Mena about her legal status during her detainment didn t violate the 4th amendment
because the officers didn t need to have reasonable suspicion to do so. 5.) I agree with the Supreme

Karl Popper And The Scientific Method
Karl Popper is commonly regarded as one of the greatest philosophers of science in the 20th Century.
He is well known for his rejection of the inductivist viewpoint of the scientific method, in which one
uses observation to propose a law to generalize an observed pattern, and later confirm that law through
more observation. Popper states that induction cannot be logically justified (Popper 14). Inductivism
relies on the process of inductive reasoning which is a logical process in which multiple premises, all
thought to be true and found to be true most of the time, are combined to obtain a conclusion and in
many cases formulate a law or theory. Popper rejected the inductivist viewpoint in favor of a theory
called empirical falsification which holds that a theory can never be proven, but it can be falsified, and
therefore it can and needs to be scrutinized through experimentation.
In his work Conjectures and Refutations, Popper discussed several aspects of induction including the
topics of conjectures (opinions or conclusions formed on the basis of incomplete information) or
tentative theories and refutations (ways to refute an argument, opinion, testimony, doctrine, or theory,
through contradicting evidence) or the acts of disproving arguments through counterexamples
(Oxford).
Popper opines that a significant problem with the scientific method is that scientists get so caught up
in evidence that supports a specific conjecture that they either 1) fail to consider

Viability of Non-Nuclear Deterrence Strategies
Near the end of World War II, the United States (U.S.) atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
demonstrated that nuclear weapons can technically be used as a strategic imperative [1]. Nuclear
capability, thereafter, was much sought after by states as the basis for deterrence and thus fuelled the
nuclear arms race during the Cold War, especially between the U.S. and the Soviet Union [2].
However, several literatures [3] [4] [5] have debated that nuclear deterrence and utilisation of nuclear
weapons are morally and ethically unacceptable. Several others [6] [7] argued that nuclear capability
is not the be all and end all of deterrence. In addition, the existence of Nuclear Non proliferation
Treaty (NPT) measures, theoretically, makes it difficult for non nuclear states to acquire the
capabilities to produce nuclear weapons and to do so without being detected [8]. Hence, this essay
seeks to examine the viability of non nuclear deterrence strategies, particularly to address the question
Who are the potential adversaries of non nuclear states and what are the deterrence strategies that are
viable?
Setting the Context
The potential adversaries that non nuclear states may face will be generalised into three types for the
purpose of this discussion. These are nuclear state actors, non nuclear state actors, and non state actors
(NSAs). Nuclear state actors includes the five nuclear weapon states under the NPT, as well as the
three non NPT and one undeclared nuclear powers [9].

Lip Balm Essay
People in the marketing industry might say that EOS took a strategic gamble and won. They entered a
market that was already filled with lip balm companies that were very successful and held the majority

like Chapstick, Blistex, and Burt s Bees. EOS or the Evolution Of Smooth finally decided to share
their very successful marketing strategy with the world.
EOS Is The Second Best Selling Lip Balm
The fact is that EOS is the second best selling lip balm in the country and the little startup is making
about $250 million dollars a year according to a consulting and research firm. In addition, the

Tea Chromatography
Introduction
In this lab session, physical transformations were used to separate caffeine content from tea and
separate components by chromatography. The caffeine content was determined by extracting it from
the tea solution by adding sodium carbonate and dichloromethane into the tea and then and then
evaporating the solvent, using a hot plate. By weighing the empty beaker and the beaker after the
solvent has been evaporated on a top loading scale, the mass of caffeine was calculated. In the second
experiment, paper chromatography was used to separate the dyes in colored markers. The purpose of
this experiment is to observe how chromatography can be used to separate mixtures of chemical
substances. Chromatography serves mainly as a tool for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Discussion
By calculation, the amount of caffeine contained within 100 mL of the tea solution is approximately
26.8 mg. This data may be imprecise due to the possible errors during the extraction of caffeine from
the tea. Errors could have been made during phase separation and how vigorously or gentle the
mixture was shook. Also, errors could have been made during the filtration process and not separating
enough of the tea mixture from the dichloromethane, thus causing the calculation to be

Similarities Between Gary Goss Pleasantville And Blue Velvet
While suburbia is not quite a city to be registered as a cinematic city, it has its own specific way of life
just any city does. The speciality of suburbia though, is that it can be branded, sold and recreated in
most places in America. It is the complete full circle of the American Dream, or better yet it is the
trademarked edition. The 1950 s are thought of as the peak, or stereotypical best, the American Dream
with the white picket fence, 2.5 kids, and a hot meal waiting for you when you get home. While this
idea may be postcard or billboard perfect, it is not as perfect for everyone involved or for the future
when it looked at from under the service. Gary Ross Pleasantville and David Lynch s Blue Velvet both
explore the idea of the suburban American Dream and that it is not as squeaky clean perfection as it
seems.
Gary Ross Pleasantville is the story of two modern day children being magically zapped into a TV
Land esque show, called Pleasantville, about stereotypical perfect 1950 s life in the suburbs.

The Heights And The Grange Essay
Wuthering Heights
Two characters and their significance to the Heights and the Grange
Wuthering Heights, the gothic novel by Emily Bronte, introduces us to two neighbouring families
living on the moors of Yorkshire. The remote setting sets a cold, windy, dark vision which infiltrates
the perspective households of the Earnshaws of Wuthering Heights and the Linton s of Thrushcross
Grange. The setting of Bronte s novel is the wild, untamed moors of her birthplace. Emily Bronte
brings her own personality and essence to Wuthering Heights, which is contrary to those of her sisters
, Anne and Charlotte. Emily Bronte s love for the outdoors and in particular the Yorkshire moors, as
well as her unusual and extremely unsocial and reserved character is identifiable in Heathcliff, the
main character (Wuthering heights.co.uk 2014). Also weaving its way through the novel is her
unconventional religious beliefs. The incorporation of the supernatural and gothic references defies
her family upbringing.
It can be said that the villain or protagonist in this novel is the main character Heathcliff, who does not
always endear himself to the reader with his morose and intense personality and that the influence he
has over Catherine Earnshaw and his subsequent actions of revenge, make him the ultimate demon.
However, the character of Heathcliff is often seen by readers as a dark, brooding hero, the antagonist,
in that readers sympathise with the fact that he has reason to act the way he does,

Immanuel Kant s Philosophy On Moral And Good And Evil...
Moral philosophy is a branch of philosophy which focuses and investigates the ideas of right and
wrong and good and evil behavior. Moral philosophers have researched and justified the logical
consequences of moral or ethical beliefs. When we think of morals, we think of rules that tell us which
actions are right and which are wrong. But, do human beings have the ability to judge for themselves,
based on the facts of a situation, what is right and wrong, what they should do and not do? Well,
according to Immanuel Kant, who is one of the most influential philosophers of all times, believes that
human beings should not be making decisions based on the facts of a situation, but should act
according to universal moral codes that apply in all situations regardless of the outcome. Kant refers to
these universal moral codes as categorical imperatives and must be fully followed at all times across
all circumstances. In his work, Groundwork of Metaphysic of Morals, Immanuel Kant talks about
three formulations of imperative. The first formulation of imperative is Act only according to that
maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law without
contradiction. Kant believes that our actions should be the same in all situations, regardless of the
outcome. Some acts are always wrong, even if the act leads to an admirable outcome. Kant believes
that emotions and consequences should not play a role in moral action. We are morally obligated or
have a duty

Love Revealed In The Two Lovers By Marie De France
The Two Lovers by Marie de France is about a father and a daughter and the many issues that they
have. For one, the King believed that his daughter could not marry just anyone. He comes up with a
plan where the one who wants to marry his beautiful daughter would have to carry her up a very high
mountain. Right away, we begin to see the problem with this idea. Every man who tried to accomplish
the task did not succeed. I feel like most of the men that volunteered to do this were just doing it to
prove that they were the greatest and strongest. This is where I believe that the King was trying to
force love that didn t exist. The King s daughter also had a lot of love for her father. We see this when
she finally meets a man who loves her truly. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The odds were not in her favor because many men had tried and no one had succeeded. If the father
had let her chose her marriage partner (in a normal way), maybe no one would ve had to die. Maybe
the princess believed that she had finally found the right man because of his idea to elope, making her
think that this man would do anything for her. Perhaps she was looking for a lot of things in a man and
got carried away too. I believe that if the princess had been given the option to decide this poem
would ve had a completely different ending. Of course, she would ve still had her father s approval in
mind, but at least she could ve had a say in her love life. Maybe seeing the man die was the last straw
from a lot of distress. I think Marie de France was trying to show how such a controlled life could end
up. Nothing good came from having everything set out for her. This is what her father had been doing.

Satire In The Importance Of Being Ernest
Mytia Terry
May 10, 2017
ENGL 2323 008
To: Jon Stewart
From: Mytia Terry
Subject: The Importance of Being Earnest exhibits a high seriousness of intent that Wilde wished for.
In the play The Importance of Being Earnest , Oscar Wilde focused on the Victorian Age by mocking
the Victorian principles and ideals. Wilde utilized satire and mockery through the character to make
fun of their culture, principles, behaviors, and morals of the Victorians. Wilde also used the characters
in the play to demonstrate the political, social, and religious views in the late 1900 s. One of the first
things Wilde chooses to mock in The Importance of Being Earnest is the institution of marriage which
is a social satire. In the play, marriage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chauble. Chauble represents the religious satire Wilde wanted to present to the audience. Dr. Chauble
gives the exact same sermon at many events no matter the circumstances. In the play he states My
sermon on the meaning of the manna in the wilderness can be adapted to almost any occasion, joyful,
or, as in this present case, distressing. I have preached it at harvest celebrations, christenings,
confirmations, on days of humiliation, and festal days (Act 2). Wilde presents in this play that the
priesthood lacks originality and is very boring. He mocks the fact that Chauble uses the same sermon
for multiple occasions and doesn t even take the time to change it.
The last satire used in the play is political satire used to mock the victorian morality. Wilde
demonstrates instability of the moral consciousness when in the play Chasuble surrenders to his
emotions for Mrs.Prism. In the play, Chasuble states Were I fortunate enough to be Prism s pupil, I
would hang upon her lips (Act 2). Wilde uses this to mock the moral faith of the Victorian society. The
Victorian people were very absent minded because of the deeply hidden anxiety and they tried to stay
confines in their own privacy.
In conclusion, The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde demonstrates uses satire through the social,
political, and religious ways of the Victorians and used them to make a mockery of their ideals,
beliefs, values, and

Social Problems Of The Aging Population

The new demographic trends translate into the investment of the population pyramid of many
countries (if until then people over 55 60 years ago did not represent much percentage with respect to
the total volume of the population and the greatest volume we found in childhood and adolescence,
that is, the base of the population pyramid begins to decrease increasing its peak, where older people
are). This, together with the changes that occur in society (appearance of organized social services,
changes in the system of family organization, incorporation of women into the workplace,
technological advances and new medical advances ...) has an impact on the health needs and the
distribution of social services for the elderly population. The individual ages and the society ages.
When considering the stage of aging we are presented with a social problem of the first order, in that
older people as a different and important group in the demographic field, with specific cultural
features, their own interests, ... are demanding that society be guaranteed the increase of their well
being, the performance of roles that give meaning to their lives, the development of attitudes different
from the current ones with which marginalization and uprooting, insecurity, lack of quality of life and

  • 2. Symbols Of Death In Halloween Symbols of death have been commonplace in western cultures since their inception. However, the way in which these symbols are interpreted have gone through significant changes as the human relationship to death has progressed. This relationship has been fundamentally shaped by interactions with disease, war, and varying levels of technology, which influences the amount of death individuals encounter throughout their lives. This intersectionality of causal factors, symbolism, and interpretation of the human condition, is continually illustrated through different cultural means, especially art and décor and holidays. In the post war to contemporary period, Death has been largely removed from Western cultures, particularly North America and Europe, as technological advancements, and the sanitization of the public gaze have occurred. However, an indirect relationship to death still persists through cultural interactions with Halloween. Analysis of the spaces in which death is opening described, visualized, and indirectly interacted, need to occur to create a larger understanding the roots of western cultural practices, and to understand the problematic aspects of the spectacle of death through commodification. Within the historical trajectory of Halloween the connections to death and human mortality are abundantly apparent. Though there are many examples of cultural practices or holidays that celebrate or commemorate death globally, the origins of Halloween can be directly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Derogatory Effects Of Pride On Human Life The derogatory effects of pride on human life is an idea that runs through William Shakespeare s play Julius Caesar. Caesar himself is consumed by pride, and the way that others treat him only reinforces his idea that his is the strongest man in the world, and certainly the only man fit to lead Rome. Caesar s ambition, which was caused by his pride, convinces Brutus that, despite his love for Caesar, Caesar would only hurt Rome, and therefore must die. More than that, however, Caesar s pride directly causes his downfall. Throughout Julius Caesar, Shakespeare shows the audience how Caesar s pride blinds him to signs and omens that would otherwise cause him worry. Soothsayers in Ancient Rome were very well respected. The words of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The audience can assume that his pride is the main reason that he ignored the soothsayer s words. Caesar, as evident by his prompt dismissal of a man warning him of his own demise, sees himself as above the common folk, and above the influence of the fates. This trait, which he exhibits on several occasions, eventually leads to his end. Similar to how soothsayers had a very significant role in Roman society, dreams also played a large part in the daily lives of Roman citizens. On the eve of the ides of March, Calphurnia has a nightmare foreshadowing Caesar s inevitable assassination. According to Caesar, Nor heaven nor earth have been at peace tonight/Thrice hath Calphurnia in her sleep cried out/ Help, ho! They murder Caesar! (JC 2.2.1 3). He recognizes the strangeness of the events that are going on, but he seems to not accept them. Despite this, he still has a servant contact priests to decide his course for the day. In saying this he is showing apprehension about the strange omens, and is attempting to take precautionary measures against bad luck. However, despite this seeming change of heart, a few lines later Caesar has already made up his mind to approach the day as if these omens had never happened. In his mind, nothing can harm him. He makes this clear by saying The things that threatened me/Ne er looked but on my back. When they shall see/The face of Caesar, they are vanished. (JC 2.2.10 12). He, despite these bad omens, ... • 4. Temperature And Humidity Effects On Composite Material... TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY EFFECTS ON COMPOSITE MATERIAL PROPERTIES ANSHUL and RAHUL ABSTRACT This paper discusses the different properties of composite materials under static testing condition to determine the effect of aging due to change in temperature and moisture content. Effects on tensile, shear, impact, stiffness and fatigue parameters are studied. For each property, application specific composite materials are taken into consideration with different stacking sequence and number of plies. Different samples of these are then introduced to different hygrothermal environments for example: temperatures ranging from 50 degree Celsius to +50 degree Celsius or kept in wet conditions for 24 hours at different temperatures of 21, 37 and 50 degree Celsius etc. Different tests are performed based on the material property to observe a change from the initial unaged specimen. To study every property a different test method is discussed. A final comparison for each property between the unaged and aged specimen is shown in order to see the property s dependence on temperature and moisture. This comparison highlights the temperature and moisture dependent properties and showcase a trend. Properties like tensile modulus, shear modulus, shear strength, flexural stiffness and fatigue life show a decrease with increase in temperature and moisture content while Poisson s ratio and impact strength increase with increase in temperature and moisture content. Oil and gas is Nigeria s main source of revenue. It accounts for about 40% of the Gross Domestic Product and 70% of government revenues (Lawal 2004). Crude oil was first discovered in 1956 by Shell British Petroleum in a small village called Oloibiri present day Bayelsa State. Two years later oil in larger quantities was discovered in Ogoni. The Niger delta region has a population of 28 million people, a coverage of 70,000 square kilometers consisting of 606 fields, 5,284 wells, 7,000 kilometers of pipelines, 10 export terminals, 275 flow stations and a liquefied natural gas sector (Williams 2011). The Niger delta which is Nigeria s oil belt has been embroiled in conflict and resistance against the government and multinational oil corporations that extract oil in the region. The Niger delta is highly volatile with insurgent groups controlling the area. Years of oil exploitation, environmental degradation and neglecting by the states has created an impoverished, marginalized and exploited region which has produced resistance form the youth in the Niger delta region. A regime of state repression and corporate violence has further generated popular criminal violence, lawlessness, illegal appropriations and insecurity (Williams 2011). Setting a goal to alleviate the pain of millions of afflicted people in the Third World will consolidate the company s culture and uplift employees morale. In addition to that, this is not the first time that the company will give something back to the community: Merck had already donated considerable quantities of streptomycin to Japan, which had faced especially high levels of tuberculosis in the aftermath of the World War II a philanthropy that was repeated in 1958 when the Merck Medical Outreach Program donated antibiotics, antiparasitic agents and vaccines for humanitarian efforts in developing countries and disaster zones (Rea, Zhang, amp; Baras, 2010) That is to say, if the company sees this program through, it will do a great service to the world once again. Second of all, the approval of the pursuit of the human version of ivermactin does not mean that he has to fund the program all at once or fund it with a big amount of money that will consequently affect other developments or other lines of production. The funding can be from the profits that the company made in the previous year. In fact, according to the case, annual net revenue has increased every year in the past ten years. Most likely these creative efforts will boost growth from the younger patorns and music lovers. On the other hand, the older generations may be reluctant to be attracted to Starbucks. Rather, they may just visit a local coffee shop instead. Therefore this market segment may not grow as fast as the younger generations. Furthermore, a market segment that has declining potential is the busy working professionals. Because of their busy schedule, these working professionals, males and females alike, may just brew their own coffees in the office space. Another discouraging factor is the much higher price of Starbucks coffee products. As a general rule, Starbucks does not offer promotional prices on its products, which tend to be higher than those of competitors (Wikipedia, 2006). • 10. Peak Expiratory Flow Rate Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) is a measure of how much a person can breathe out in a single large breath. PEFR is used as a clinical tool to test the functionality of a patient s lung, the severity of asthma or other respiratory illness symptoms and the best course of treatment for the patient. The PEFR reading will be lower when a person s airways are constricted and should be at its highest when the patient is at full health. The PEFR is measured using a small handheld device known as a peak flow meter. PEFR is dependent on a person s gender, age, height, weight, smoker status as well as other factors. • 11. Meaning Of Words In Adah s A Silent Vow Has a speech ever been presented that was very meaningful, but was also short and cut straight to the point? The proverb words should be weighed, not counted perfectly shows that. When someone is giving advice, a person doesn t just sit there and count the amount of words that are being said; they pay attention to the message and grasp the concept. This proverb originates from a Yiddish (Jewish) author. It s understandable why he would say something like this because his ancestors went through the Holocaust. Within the first few lines, the author wrote; But the silence of a pen on a paper is a great sound (Adah). Although using pen and paper could be used to count the words, what the person wrote down made a great sound . It shows that sometimes, people can t just speak their mind; each thought needs to be written out, taking each word into deep consideration. This poem shows that you don t have to speak literal words to get your point across. Tony states, Here I have taken a silent vow and my pen spits liquid pellets on the faces of retreating army (Adah). • 12. The Central Nervous System For Spinal Cord Injuries Introduction: The central nervous system is what connects the brain to the muscles of the body. When a patient has an injury to the spinal cord, movements in certain parts of the body will be affected based on the location of the injury. If the injury affects hand motion then many day to day tasks are affected. This literature review seeks to understand how an injury to the spinal cord impacts movement, and what has been done so far to help those affected by spinal cord injuries. Methods: The information in this literature review was collected from an expert interview and the search databases Science Direct, PubMed, and Google Scholar. The expert for the expert interview was selected based on experience with designing prosthetics for individuals that had lost their hand and potentially part of their arm (Birdwell, 2016). The databases were searched using keywords spinal cord injury , hand movement , and fine motor movement . In PubMed the selection was also narrowed down by selecting only studies done on humans. New terminology was searched through science direct due to the built in function that allows for key words from the article to be selected for further information from multiple books or journals. Results: How a healthy body transmits signals: Precision hand motions are controlled by the motor cortex (M1) and the corticospinal system. (Perez, 2015). The order was for five mountain bikes to be used for patrol so they had to be custom made in order to sport the police decals. The custom bikes were a special order because they contained unique decals displaying POLICE . Therefore Dirk can enforce the oral contract against Biff despite the price being an excess of $500, (under Revised article 2). Analyzing the case with all elements in mind, we concluded that a contract was in fact created. Dirk, who is pursuing Biff in court, will put up a case due to the oral contract that was indeed made. In this case there is no need for a written contract because Biff verbally agreed to buy five Schwinn custom police mountain bikes specially ordered by Dirk. For this non resellable goods exception to apply, the seller, Dirk, must have made a substantial beginning in manufacturing the goods. To show this is true, Dirk went out of his way to create an order for Biff that was special for the Police department, and by doing so, Dirk cannot return/resell the bikes, and he is at a loss of $17,500. The most important factor working in Dirks favor is the letter he received from the local PBA. The end of the letter had a hand written signature thanking Dirk for ordering the bikes. This is hard evidence that a deal was made because the note brings up the agreement for the bikes in writing and is signed by the second party, Biff. Dirk has enough evidence to bring Biff to ... The students who stopped Turner from continuing to assault the young woman stated that they intervened because they could tell that the woman was clearly unconscious. This system which is known as negative feedback is responsible for achieving balance in our bodies even if external or internal changes occur. When any internal or external factor makes the blood pressure rise, we have specialized cells located in the walls of some blood vessels that are able to detect the problem and send nerve impulses to the brain which sends nerves impulses to the heart and blood vessel that receive the information. As a result, the heart rate decrease, the blood vessels dilate, and the blood pressure goes down. Finally, the body goes back to the balance condition that is called homeostasis. One is the struggle between Victor and himself; the other is between Victor and his creation. However, his creation could be viewed as a reflection of Victor and also a reflection of his society that is driven by selfish motives and with little or no regard for the natural order of events. Victor s creation represents the negative consequences of trying to change natural occurrences. Victor is constantly faced with the sides and characteristics of himself that he dreads, which causes him to abandon his creation. However, the theme of power throughout the novel that is perhaps the most prevalent; it is almost a character in and of itself. The character of power evolves as the story unfolds moving from Victor, creator, to the Monster. The power struggle is clearly evident and shifts at key points in the novel. The author effectively establishes Victor s passion and character from the beginning, making the reader feel his commitment to his vision. However, she uses these important themes commonly found throughout history to demonstrate the possible negative results to both the protagonist and society by creating a Monster that is both a reflection of the creator himself and the faults prevalent in all societies. • 19. Analysis Of Caricature Of Humanity In The Runner Caricature of Humanity The Runner by DeLillo tells of a self absorbed runner who is witnessing a mysterious kidnapping without caring about it. The runner is a perfect portrayal of uncaring citizens, who lack empathy with others unless they are directly connected to them. While running, the narrator witnesses a car pulling onto the lawn, this is odd but he ignores it, it appears he does not care about other people, he prefers to continue running. The narrator notices that a car came off the road, bouncing onto the sloped lawn. (47) The runner is seeing a car come off the road onto the grass in the park where he is running. Since the narrator is not stopping to investigate he appears self absorbed and selfishly uncurious. The runner s neighbor explains she, heard the car when it came over the curb. More or less bang on the grass. The father gets out and takes the little boy. (49) His neighbor just witnessed a child being kidnapped, although she does not know anyone involved, she assumes the kidnapper is the boy s father. The runner seems disinterested in both the kidnapping and his neighbor s opinion. He seems to feel the kidnapping shouldn t concern him; he wasn t kidnapped, and he didn t know who was. Why should he care? What the runner doesn t realize is that this affects him emotionally and physically. This is a community concern. Whether or not the father was the kidnapper the entire area becomes concerned with safety. The runner, without thinking, crushes his neighbor s ideal situation even though he does not seem to care about the kidnapping. The narrator questions his neighbor and hears her response You can t be sure, can you? I saw them both and I saw the child. (50)When asked if she was sure the father was the kidnapper the neighbor states she saw the mother, the child, and the kidnapper. This implies that she does not know the real situation, but is merely projecting the most ideal situation. The viewpoint of the neighbor is interesting because our main character disagrees with the idea that the father was just taking his child. Although this is the ideal situation for both the child and the bystanders the runner takes a cynical view. This most likely means he would rather ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Karl Popper And The Scientific Method Karl Popper is commonly regarded as one of the greatest philosophers of science in the 20th Century. He is well known for his rejection of the inductivist viewpoint of the scientific method, in which one uses observation to propose a law to generalize an observed pattern, and later confirm that law through more observation. Popper states that induction cannot be logically justified (Popper 14). Inductivism relies on the process of inductive reasoning which is a logical process in which multiple premises, all thought to be true and found to be true most of the time, are combined to obtain a conclusion and in many cases formulate a law or theory. Popper rejected the inductivist viewpoint in favor of a theory called empirical falsification which holds that a theory can never be proven, but it can be falsified, and therefore it can and needs to be scrutinized through experimentation. In his work Conjectures and Refutations, Popper discussed several aspects of induction including the topics of conjectures (opinions or conclusions formed on the basis of incomplete information) or tentative theories and refutations (ways to refute an argument, opinion, testimony, doctrine, or theory, through contradicting evidence) or the acts of disproving arguments through counterexamples (Oxford). Popper opines that a significant problem with the scientific method is that scientists get so caught up in evidence that supports a specific conjecture that they either 1) fail to consider ... • 22. Viability of Non-Nuclear Deterrence Strategies Near the end of World War II, the United States (U.S.) atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki demonstrated that nuclear weapons can technically be used as a strategic imperative [1]. Nuclear capability, thereafter, was much sought after by states as the basis for deterrence and thus fuelled the nuclear arms race during the Cold War, especially between the U.S. and the Soviet Union [2]. However, several literatures [3] [4] [5] have debated that nuclear deterrence and utilisation of nuclear weapons are morally and ethically unacceptable. Several others [6] [7] argued that nuclear capability is not the be all and end all of deterrence. In addition, the existence of Nuclear Non proliferation Treaty (NPT) measures, theoretically, makes it difficult for non nuclear states to acquire the capabilities to produce nuclear weapons and to do so without being detected [8]. Hence, this essay seeks to examine the viability of non nuclear deterrence strategies, particularly to address the question Who are the potential adversaries of non nuclear states and what are the deterrence strategies that are viable? Setting the Context The potential adversaries that non nuclear states may face will be generalised into three types for the purpose of this discussion. These are nuclear state actors, non nuclear state actors, and non state actors (NSAs). Nuclear state actors includes the five nuclear weapon states under the NPT, as well as the three non NPT and one undeclared nuclear powers [9]. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The remote setting sets a cold, windy, dark vision which infiltrates the perspective households of the Earnshaws of Wuthering Heights and the Linton s of Thrushcross Grange. The setting of Bronte s novel is the wild, untamed moors of her birthplace. Emily Bronte brings her own personality and essence to Wuthering Heights, which is contrary to those of her sisters , Anne and Charlotte. Emily Bronte s love for the outdoors and in particular the Yorkshire moors, as well as her unusual and extremely unsocial and reserved character is identifiable in Heathcliff, the main character (Wuthering heights.co.uk 2014). • 29. Immanuel Kant s Philosophy On Moral And Good And Evil... Moral philosophy is a branch of philosophy which focuses and investigates the ideas of right and wrong and good and evil behavior. Moral philosophers have researched and justified the logical consequences of moral or ethical beliefs. When we think of morals, we think of rules that tell us which actions are right and which are wrong. But, do human beings have the ability to judge for themselves, based on the facts of a situation, what is right and wrong, what they should do and not do? Well, according to Immanuel Kant, who is one of the most influential philosophers of all times, believes that human beings should not be making decisions based on the facts of a situation, but should act according to universal moral codes that apply in all situations regardless of the outcome. Kant refers to these universal moral codes as categorical imperatives and must be fully followed at all times across all circumstances. In his work, Groundwork of Metaphysic of Morals, Immanuel Kant talks about three formulations of imperative. The first formulation of imperative is Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law without contradiction. Kant believes that our actions should be the same in all situations, regardless of the outcome. Some acts are always wrong, even if the act leads to an admirable outcome.
