2. Rape In The Military Essay
Why should our service members enjoy a lesser standard of justice and fairness than you and I, whose
freedoms they risked everything to protect (Peters and Huetteman). This quote by Senator Kirsten E.
Gillibrand, a democrat from New York, was mentioned during her speech promoting the new bill she
created about sexual assault and rape in the US military (Peters and Huetteman). Lots of people mix
those words and think they are the same thing, but they are not. Defined by the Merriam Webster
Dictionary, sexual assault is illegal sexual contact that usually involves force upon a person without
consent or is inflicted upon a person who is incapable of giving consent (as because of age or physical
or mental incapacity) or who places the assailant (as a doctor) in a position of trust or authority, while
rape means to force (someone) to have sex with you by using violence ... Show more content on

3. Two Main Coronaries
1. The two main coronary arteries that supply blood to the hart are the left main coronary artery and
the right coronary artery.
The left main coronary artery provides blood to the left part of the heart (e.g. left atrium and left
ventricle). In particular, the left main coronary branches off into the circumflex artery and the left
anterior descending artery. If there is occlusion in the circumflex coronary, then there is infarction in
the left atrium and the side and back of the left ventricle. In addition, if there is blockage in the left
anterior descending artery, then there is infarction in the front and bottom of the left ventricle, and the
bottom of the sepum.
The right coronary artery supplies blood into the right area of the heart

Hello Avery Thank you for this great post. I looked closer to find more about managed care plans that
originally have emerged as a result of the need to reduce the cost of health care and to shift the risk of
financial burden toward the patients, and the providers. The goal of managed care plans is to manage
care by directing and restricting the dental benefits through controlling the cost of dental services by
setting a fixed price of dental services as the case in dental health maintenance organization (DHMOs)
and control the services that rendered by provider as PPOs will drop a provider in case of excess
services. Managed care plans control and direct the patients for a set of providers through an

5. The Joy Luck Club By Amy Tan Character Analysis
The Joy Luck Club is Amy Tan s first novel. It consists of four sections with sixteen short stories. One
of the main issues of the novel is the relationship between Chinese mothers and their Chinese
American daughters. Your mother is in your bones. (Tan 1998, 30) There is a cultural chasm between
them because of the difference in the way they were brought up and different influences of the
environment.
The members of The Joy Luck Club are four elderly aunties who gather once a week in San Francisco
to play Mah jong and eat Chinese food. When one of the women dies, her daughter Jing mei (June) is
invited to take her place. What will I say? What can I tell them about my mother? I don t know
anything. She was my mother. (Tan 1998, 30) When she realizes that she knows very little about her
own mother she asks the aunties to tell her more about her. That is when they start telling each other
stories.
There is a linguistic gap between the mothers, who are the first generation of Chinese immigrants, and
their American born daughters. The mothers speak only fragments of English and their daughters
speak little or no Chinese at all. So the communication often becomes a matter of translations and
leads to misunderstandings. The first misunderstanding with translation is shown when Jing mei tries
to explain the significance of the club s name, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Gross Motor pertains to movements related to our large muscles (e.g., legs, arms). As noted in our text
book, Gross motor skills provide a foundation for fine motor development, cognition, communication,
adaptive skills, and social and emotional competence in the typically developing child (Hooper
Umansky,p. 163). Fine Motor applies to movements related to small muscle groups (e.g., hands,
fingers). During the first three months, infants displaying typical development, are working on
postural control and rotation of their bodies. While on their tummy babies will lift to hold up their
head, and push their bodies up with their arms. At four to six months babies are sitting up supported
by their own hands and can reach to play with feet.

8. The Importance Of Food In My Life And My Family Life
Food it is something that we need to survive, it is essential for us as a species to grow and be healthy.
Some people see food as something that they need to live, but some people see it as something more
than something that we need to do. I am person who loves food. Food has been a huge part of my life
and my family life. Food is not just something that tastes good, it gives me memories of when me and
my dad when to go get ice cream or what we were eating for Thanksgiving. I am going to be talking
about food and how it affects me in my life. First I am going to talk about how I feel about food and
how important it is for me. Then I will discuss what role food plays in my life and what food I eat.
Food is ingrained in are daily culture, we see food everywhere on billboards on TV we even see it on
are phones. I believe that food is such a daily occurrence in our life that we forget how much we
actually eat and see it and talk about it. I personally love to eat food. Eating food is one of those
experiences that cannot mimic by doing something else. I consume all sorts of food from fast food to
high end restaurants. Food it isn t just the physical object, every single dish of food has a story behind
that dish. When I was a kid my mother and I went to Lowe s to get a birthday present for my dad. As I
walked into the store I thought we were getting him a new tool. But I ended up finding out we got him
this grilled call an Weber. When it came time for birthday he opened it and immediately set up. He put
charcoal on the bottom of the Weber on the sides and then put lighter fluid on the charcoal and lit it on
fire. Then he waited till the charcoal started the smolder and put mesquite wood chips on the charcoal
creating this smoke that smelled amazing. Then the best part he laid a full rack of season ribs, as he
laid it on the grill you could hear the meat simmer and start to smell the meat cooking. After waiting
for seems like an eternity I finally got to partake of the ribs. This was the first time I ever ate ribs, it
was something I never tasted before my life it was so good. This is just one story out of hundreds of
mine that involves food. Everyone has a story about food. Now sadly

9. The Importance Of Legalizing Abortion In The United States
Imagine being a woman with an unplanned pregnancy and no ability to get an abortion because the

you feel like you have no other choice. There are women across the nation who feel and endure these
unimaginable and terrifying hardships, which is why abortions should be legal throughout the United
States. First, illegalizing abortions will not eliminate the practice of the procedure as intended, but will

10. Assist Developmental Playgroup Staff For Children With...
entifying the information Friday October 30, 2015, I was able to assist Developmental Playgroup staff

children who are one and a half years of age, two children who were two and half years old, and an
older child around the age of five. To care for the seven children, there were three staff members and a

Initial observations of the client The Playgroup room was created in order to address all areas in which
a child develops, so the physical climate is stimulating for children to find interests in toys that they
have been exposed to. The setup of the room caters to the child s reading, imaginative play, gross
motor skills, fine motor skills, skill building, and sensory. This weekly group of children is generally
small; they require a lot of attention since some children are so young and have not begun to walk,
multiple children who are very active, a few of the children have a harder time with being away from
their parents, and all of the children uses English as their second language. Focusing on one mother
and her one and a half year old daughter, the initial observation of the two is their close attachment to
one another. The mother and child are not separated often which creates some anxiety in the child
when the mother chooses to leave.
Content of the session On this particular day, the child had experienced a very rough time seeing her
mother leave. The mother washed her child s hands and guided her to a toy which challenges a child s
sensory processing and fine motor skills, molding and cutting Play Doh. I began to work with the
mother and child, so that she could have an easier transition when her mother decided to leave. We
began to mold and cut the Play Doh, the mother tells her child I will be back, I love you, and the child
immediately breaks down.

is starting to understand what certain things actually mean. To begin with, in the book Charlie thinks
that everyone at work is a friend of his and whenever they laugh, they are laughing with him. This
however is not the case because in the novel Charlie is asking where he can go to learn and become
smart, and Frank and Joe Carp make fun of him. On page 27 it states She rote the name down on a

outside and they ditch him. On page 30 it states I dont remember how the party was over but they
asked me to go around the corner to see if it was raining and when I came back there was no on their.
This quote indicates that once again his coworkers are making fun of him and Charlie thinks that they
are being nice to him and friendly. This scenario leaves Charlie upset because he starts to wonder why
they left him. Furthermore, later in the novel Charlie goes to another party and Ellen is rubbing up
against him and makes Charlie feel funny. At the party Charlie starts to remember some memories

14. Elements Of Crime Fiction Genre
Crime fiction has set the stage for popular action and thriller movies derived from this genre. It has not
only thrilled audiences in the mid 1800s but has thrilled generations of film enthusiasts and book
worms alike. The crime fiction genre, is exactly as it sounds. It is fictional stories based on the solving
of a crime or anything to do with crime. But in order for a story to be classed as crime fiction it must
follow key elements. The best crime fiction stories show two or more of these elements.
Agatha Christie s Murder on The Orient Express (2017), follows these key elements well; combined
with a thrilling storyline, the film makes an excellent example of crime fiction. The story is classed as
cosy crime a sub genre of crime fiction popular in England. The film is based off of Christie s short
story published in 1934. The film tells the story of a group of diverse individuals all aboard the luxury
train, the Orient Express. While aboard the train a billionaire is murdered under mysterious
circumstances. Unfortunately for the victim, amateur detective Hercule Poirot happens to be a
passenger aboard the train and is there to solve the case.
On the other end of the crime fiction genre is the hard boiled or golden age sub genre. Hard boiled
crime is more typically puzzle driven as opposed to cosy crime. Dashiell Hammett s The Creeping
Siamese is a perfect example of crime fiction once again including most of the key elements of crime
fiction. Originally

15. Muscular Dystrophy And Its Effects On The Body
Muscular dystrophy is a group of diseases that cause an abnormal progressive deteriorating of the
muscles, leading to muscle weakness. Many different types of dystrophy are known, characterized by
the muscle groups affected. The disease is caused from a genetic mutation that prevents a protein
essential for normal muscle activity from being made, or being produced correctly. In each type of
muscular dystrophy, a different protein is irregular (Emery, 2008). Furthermore, because this disease is
due to a genetic mutation, there is no cure to fix the mutation. Therefore treatment is used to attend to
the problems caused by the dystrophy and treatment strives to create a pleasant life for the patient.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, treatment methods include
multiple types of therapy, including respiratory, physical, speech, drug, and occupational, as well as
surgery (NINDS, 2011). Hydrotherapy, a type of physical therapy in water and its effects on muscular
dystrophy patients will be focused on in the succeeding study.
BACKGROUND:
The most common muscular dystrophy is Duchenne dystrophy (Emery 2008). Due to a genetic defect
only on the X chromosome, this disease is present primarily in males. The University of California
Los Angeles found the occurrence at 1 out of every 5000 males in countries that provide genetic
counseling (UCLA). The protein discovered that is absent is dystrophin, a protein essential in the

Analysis of the Gladiator Trailer
Trailers are important to films for a number of reasons. They promote a film and present it to the
target audience, in order to encourage them to watch the film. Trailers also give the audience
expectations of the film. The audience like to know what to expect of a film before they go and see it.
The audience is given a taste of the story and the basic plot. This is done by showing an array of clips
that are edited to a certain degree. The trailer normally ends with a cliff hanger . This is a term used to
explain when an audience is not told the ending of a story. This makes them wonder in suspense as to

I am looking at the camera shots/angles, colours, lighting, sound, plot, target audience and genre. The
film Gladiator is an epic, action, war film with some romance and a lot of history. The opens image is
of the universal logo, an instantly recognisable big name. This is where the film was made. The
following image is of the DreamWorks logo. This is a Steven Spielberg company with a credible
reputation. This is a distribution company. A dramatic drumbeat is heard at the start of the opening
image which tells us instantly the genre of the film, an epic war film. This is because a heavy
drumbeat is a reminiscent of battle.
The first actual shot of the trailer is of the words THE GENERAL is then shown in bold whit capital
letters. I t stands out upon the black background. The words move back and eventually fade into the
background. At the beginning of this shot the music builds up, trumpets now accompany the drums.
This gives out a sense of defiance and strength. The audience associates this with war and battle. This
next shot is a mid shot of a man walking boldly with his head up high. He is walking through lines of
soldiers in big strides. He is also dressed in armour, so we assume he is the general. The general has a
stern, solemn expression he seems secure and confident. The lighting is bright but creates the sense of

Tree roots are the most common unpreventable cause of sewage backup. The tree s roots move
towards sources of moisture, and as a result, they rupture the underground pipes. Older pipes can also
cause an issue with raw sewage because the materials used often include: clay or soft metals. When it
comes to a sewage backup, heavy rain has sometimes been the culprit. For example, the overflowing
water, leaves and tree branches can leave debris that causes flooding and clogging of your sewage
system. How can Business Owners and Homeowners Handle This? The best method is to leave the
overall cleanup to the professionals. However, you are the first to take notice of an accident. For that

Squeezed Persimmon The short story Persimmons was written by Yiyun Li. Li was born in 1972 in
Beijing and moved to the United States in 1996 to go to college. She originally studied immunology at
the University of Iowa, but after taking a writing course she started writing fiction. She earned her
master of fine arts in 2005 with a focus on fiction (Yiyun). Persimmons is a short story told by a group

The term Lao Da means the boss or the leader of the group ( Lao ). The narrators show their respect to
Lao Da by calling him Lao Da and treating him as their leader, even though he is a murderer. The
reason as to why these soft persimmons resort to violence is because the county officials treat the
lower class people, such as farmers, like shit. These soft persimmons are eventually squeezed too hard
and can t take it anymore. If the people of the town were treated fairly, they would not have to resort
to such violence that Lao Da resorted to. Before Lao Da took revenge, he tried as much as he possibly
could to seek justice for what happened to his son. He tried multiple riots with his fellows, but the
county seats just pushed him aside and treated him as if he was a dog. After that he decided to wait
until New Year s Eve, when everyone would be at their own house to individually murder the
seventeen county officials, starting with the one who murdered his son. The narrators seem to believe
that the county officials Squeezed him enough for fun, and that they Squeezed a murder out of it (Li

To think that the world we live in today would be drastically different, if it was not for the
innumerable amount of philosophers and physiocrats who had contributed their minds and time to
various subjects. Ranging from Voltaire to John Locke, these fellow men and women have helped
excel our progress to a better future; One splendid example is a fellow French man by the name of
François Quesnay. François Quesnay, similar to other scholars of his time, believed there were

political economy that was released in 1758. On the other hand, through the works that François
Quesnay had published, he had impacted and influenced his beliefs such as his economic ideas and his
physiocratic ideas. To begin with, in the contributions he made to the Encyclopédie, he conveys that
agriculture has the capability to generate a vast amount of income for the nation when the setting is

income via agriculture, the operation must be helped by large scale enterprises that were backed up by

23. International Capitalism
Globalization may be an overused word, although the new version of international capitalism is still so
recent that the actual system on the ground has outrun the scientific and theoretical vocabulary that
describes it. As a system, international capitalism is rapidly eliminating geographical and political
boundaries, as Marx predicted in the 19th Century. In the global, postmodern economy, branding also
involves relentless synergy and tie ins between various diverse lines of products. Films and cartoons
market their images to toy companies, fast food restaurants and cereal manufacturers, generating
billions of dollars of revenue annually, as does the commerce in seeds, genetic materials and even
human body parts. Western science and technology have been synonymous with modernization and
development in India and other Asian nations, even though this paradigm ignores the historical and
cultural that has existed in many civilizations over the centuries.
In No Logo, Naomi Klein was highly critical of globalized capitalism and the consolidation of giant
corporations and highly standardized brands and chain stores like Wal Mart, the Gap and Starbucks.

24. Coercive Act Dbq
The Coercive Acts, also known as the Intolerable Acts, were a series of British measures passed in
1774 designed to punish Massachusetts colonists for the Boston Tea Party. The Intolerable Acts were
the cause for the American War for Independence because the colonists felt they were being controlled
with the implement of vigorous policies in the American colonies. The Boston Port Act,
Massachusetts Government Act, the Act for the Impartial Administration of Justice, the Quebec Act,
and the Quartering Act were all passed as a retaliation to the Boston Tea Party and gave colonists the
right to react. The Boston Port Act angered the colonists the most, the Act closed the Boston harbor to
all shipping until the town had compensated the Dutch East India Company for the destruction of its
tea and assured the King of it s future loyalty. It prohibited ships from docking in Boston, those ships
caught docking were confiscated along with all cargo. The Boston Port Act continued the movement
of colonial unity in respect to their view of England, and colonial unification. One of the immediate
consequences of closing the port were the economic damages placed on Massachusetts. The merchant

25. Redy-Made Identities from Mercedes Benz C Class
Advertising why your product is better than other products in the market, is not enough to make
consumers buy your product anymore. These days companies need to relate to their customers
emotionally and logically. During Super Bowl I saw this Mercedes Benz C class commercial. It is
called Perfect Harmony. The commercial was about how everything lines up perfect ones in a spell.
The commercial shows the scene, where all the planets line up in a straight line. Later on the scene
background voice says that, When that perfect time comes, makes sure you are in the correct spot and
the right vehicle. In this Mercedes commercial, Mercedes tries to emotional branding with their
consumers, as well as they are attempting to sell ready made identities. In the Mercedes Benz C250
commercial Mercedes is manipulating their consumers by selling them a ready made identity. This is
explained by Douglas Rushkoff, who said that, Brands become more than just a mark of quality; they
become an invitation to a longed for lifestyle, a ready made identity. What Mr. Rushkoff is trying to
say is that, brands are not just a product or a mark of quality anymore. Brands have become a ready
made identity, for instance, if an individual owns a Mercedes that individual considered as a
successful and well doing in their life. The Mercedes C class commercial does not talk about the
features of the car, or the technical aspects of the car. Based on that, Mercedes Benz is not a car brand

In my opinion, Bacon did commit treason. Despite the fact that his motives were meant to be good and
to defend lives, he disregarded orders handed by the governor not to attack or pursue the Indians.
Today, we would call this breaking the law. In Virginia, 1676 through 1677, Bacon Rebellion took
place. Indians were coming into Virginia and taking over land by conquering and killing villages in
cold blood. Sir William Berkeley was the governor of the colony at this time. William Berkeley,
showed a reluctance to retaliate, favoring instead a policy of keeping a strict boundary between Indian

Woolf takes the reader on a psychological roller coaster with flashbacks to Mrs. Dalloway s life,
specifically her teen age to college years. She shows us all of the decisions Dalloway had to make and
how those decisions had shaped her life. Clarissa Dalloway had chosen a life that would be safe for
her, by marrying well and having a child, by living the proper political life. Throughout the novel,
Clarissa thinks back onto how she could have had a life of sexual freedom and excitement with
Richard, her ex lover from her college years. Of course this is all put into play by the arrival of him
from India, because she hadn t seen him in a very long time. All of these occurrences and flashbacks
just add to Clarissa s growing depression that she barely is able to hold onto in the story. The most
interesting and most significant aspect of Mrs. Dalloway is that it takes place in one day, which is
what Cunningham and Daldry built their book and movie off of. The idea of telling a story of a
woman s thoughts in one day is an amazing one because it is so intrinsic and specific that going past
one day would take forever to divulge and digest. One of the most important parts of Mrs. Dalloway is
the relationship between Septimus and Clarissa. Woolf uses Septimus, a war veteran who s got shell

No matter which country you live in, festivals are unavoidable. For as long as people have lived

celebrations take place in all cultures, all over the globe and for lots of different reasons. Religion,

re just looking to party, there s a festival out there for everyone. Festival is a party and party really isn
t much of a party without food and drink, and people have been celebrating with delicious grub for
centuries. Closely tied to the seasons, many food based festivals traditionally take place at harvest
time, when farmers reap their crops and there is plenty of food to share. And this lead to one of my
favorite festival La Tomatina; a festival that has been on my bucket list for quite sometimes. I want to

41. How Media Affects Women Body Image
How media affects women s body image
Mass media is designed to reach large audiences through the use of technology. Its purpose is meant to
give information we need to function as a society. Mass media is everywhere; there is no escaping
from it. From the moment you wake until you fall asleep you are confronted with media. Almost every
home in America has at least one television, access to the internet, and cell phones. Someone cannot
drive down the highway without seeing billboard signs. Checking out at the grocery store can be
tricky if trying to avoid magazines. The media portrays what is considered to be normal for how a
female acts and looks, and therefore affects what women in society feel they should look and act like.
The media s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the media women are portrayed unequal to men. For example Cole Gamble talks about a
commercial that stood out to him where a woman was being portrayed as being less than a man. Cole
writes
In the 60s, Folger s was the king of sexist commercials. In this one the dutiful wife waits on her man
with skin crawling obsequiousness. The man tells her she makes crappy coffee and she looks at him
like he just snapped a kitten s neck. Luckily the wife has a vaguely foreign neighbor who turns her on
to the magic of Folger s. The next morning wifey serves it and daddy approves, sending her into such
a paroxysm of delight she looks like a puppy who got into your meth drawer. (7)
It is unreasonable for a woman to really act like this. So why does the media act like women should be
how the Folger coffee commercial lady acted?
This is not the only way the media makes women appear less than a man. There are also many ads in
the media were women appear to only get the attention of a man by using their sexual alluring
appearance. In the essay two ways a woman can get hurt by Jean Kilbourne she talks about how
derogatory the media can be she writes in her essay Sex in advertising is pornographic because it

Introduction
Background and Significance:
The goal of this action research project is to contrast and compare the economic and cultural benefits
of multigenerational households in the Midwest of USA since the economic downturn. This research
will focus on multigenerational households of families attending the Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville (SIUE) Belleville Head Start Center . The families at this particular Head Start are
diverse, young parents with low income and other factors that fit the criteria for this project. The
center s population would have the perfect variables and characteristics for my project. The project
would include information on the economic and cultural aspects of different racial/ethnic groups, elder
care, single parents, immigrants, black and Hispanics who live in multigenerational homes. The
multigenerational families have become a growing topic of interest. Multifamily households are
defined by the U.S. Census as family households consisting of three or more generations (U. S.
Census Bureau, 2012).
The purpose of this project is to investigate how beneficial it is to families to live in a
multigenerational family household. For over twenty years, I have worked with these families and it
has been a vital balance to create stability for the family and directly impacted the child. I will use the
findings of this action research project to better assist my families to reach a level of self sufficiency.

schools, it may be difficult for them to be different than the other students as a recent study on Asian
adolescents showed significant psychological deficits in schools and a lack of parental support through
the children s struggles.2 Meanwhile, it may be unfair to blame the parents entirely for the children s
mental health because many of the Asian immigrants often work long, exhausting hours in their new
country.7 Because of lower socioeconomic status examined in Asian immigrant population, many
Asian immigrants have to worry about finances, adapting to the new culture, and economic problems.
2 When the parents are stressed with fundamental struggle for survival, they might not have time to
worry about their children s mental health or to seek help for

45. The Pros And Cons Of Single-Sex Schools
Single Sex School
Single sex education is where education is carried out where female and male students attend classes
in separate schools or buildings. This was a common practice before the 20th century especially in
higher education or secondary education. Religion or tradition mainly advocates this type of education
(Wiseman 180). Lately, there has been an increase of interest and establishment of this kind of schools
due to research on education. My interest in single sex schools is to establish the reason why they are
formed, find out if they achieve their intended purposes as well as compare their performance on the
educational level in comparison with mixed schools. This paper is important to my potential reader as
he or she will be able to understand the different types of education systems across the world the
debates surrounding such formations the reasons behind their formation and how effective or
ineffective each model is. This paper will give a short history of single sex schools and discuss their
pros and cons. Single sex schools allow teachers to gender specific strategies that would not have
worked well in mixed gender settings, hence boosting performance, reduce distractions and
disciplinary cases, but they are effective if the resources available to each gender are comparable.
Single sex schools are motivated by religious ideas that propagate sex segregation and also believe
that different sexes behave and learn in different ways and can do better in a

46. Descriptive Statistics
Unit 2 Probability and Distributions
Iesha Babers
American InterContinental University
Abstract
Many occasions can t be predicted with absolute certainty and the best way to say how likely
something will happen is to use probability. When you have a set of data that is well defined and
random probabilities can be used to describe statistical numbers of outcomes divided by the number of
all the outcomes.

47. Child Protective Services Pros and Cons
My practicum site was at the Department of Children and Family Services within the Legally Free

We are not allowed to take notes while we are with a client because it is extremely impersonal and its
believed that it sends a signal to the kids that my job is more important, I don t really care what you
have to say, I m here because I have to. This helped me with psychological knowledge because it
helped me to listen only and then reflect back on what I heard and if I feel like I need to do any sort of
intervention within the placement. I chose to work at DCFS as my practicum site because I originally
was employed there as a visitation supervisor in the dispatch unit. My job there was to supervise visits
of children who have recently been removed from their parents care. Working there helped me to see
how important the family system. I also have prior experience in the foster care system. When I was
16 years old, my 12 year old sister and I were removed from my mothers care and placed into a group
home for three days. While my mom was in a 72 hour psychiatric hold, she decided to terminate her
parental rights. My sister and I were placed in a foster home with our now foster parents. At this time
we were both considered legally free youth and I especially was considered unadoptable. Spending
two years in the foster care system I was able to see the good, the bad and the ugly and it gave me an
in depth insight when I went back to work at this practicum site,

48. Transgender People Face Harmful Discrimination
His mother holds up another dress, remarking on how cute it is and handing it to him to try on. She
ignores the uncomfortable look on his face and tells him to hurry up. He sits in the dressing room in
silence, looking at himself in the mirror, the dress hanging on a hook beside him. He furrows his
brows, covers his chest with his arms, and stares at the face looking back at him. It doesn t look right,
he thinks, trying not to cry. All his life he had been called she and girl and it never felt right. No one
told him it was okay to feel this way when he brought it up, instead yelling at him, telling him he was
just confused. It made him sick, pretending to be a girl, but no one listened or cared. Due to the many
misconceptions about them, transgender people face harmful discrimination, whether being told their
feelings are invalid, that there is no such thing, or being killed for who they are. Identifying as a
gender other than the one you are assigned at birth is seen as unnatural in a world ruled by a rigid
gender binary, so understanding transgender people s experiences is necessary for a safe life for them.
Some protections are already available to transgender people, though paltry: Only 15 [states] and the
District of Columbia have laws prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity/expression (
Knowledge Center ). Additionally, seven state governors have put orders into effect that ban the
discrimination of state workers on the basis of them being

49. Philosophies Of Sister Carrie By Theodore Dreiser
Austin Ricco Professor Sloan American Realism 11/20/16 Philosophies of Sister Carrie
There are few writers that could create a body of work that encompasses as many concepts as
Theodore Dreiser s Sister Carrie. His novel follows the life and times of Carrie, a country bell of sorts
who abandons her way of life in favor of a city lifestyle. Through through Carries progress, Dreiser
embodies many philosophies of intelligence, experience, and personal growth. Many great
philosophers have touched subjects that are apparent in Dreiser s work. Sister Carrie epitomizes many
ideas defined by great thinkers such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Lev S. Vygotsky, and Aristotle.
Eleanor Roosevelt once said that Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small
minds discuss people. Dreiser clearly hoped to convey a similar message in this novel. At the
beginning of Carrie s journey she converses with a man named Chas. H. Drouet And so this is your
first visit to Chicago, he observed.
All the time she was conscious of certain features out of the side of her eye. Flush, colorful cheeks, a
light mustache, a gray fedora hat. She now turned and looked upon him in full, the instincts of self
protection and coquetry mingling confusedly in her brain.
I didn t say that, she said.
Oh, he answered in a very pleasing way and with an assumed air of mistake. I thought you did.
It becomes very apparent that Carrie involves herself in people; however we get a sense of her

50. Stem Cells And Its Effects On Human Cells
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells within the body that are defined by their ability to self renew and
differentiate into specialized cells (1). Stem cells function in body tissues as a repair mechanism, with
an unlimited ability to divide and restock cells as needed by the body. Each time a stem cell divides,
the new cell formed can either remain a stem cell or differentiate into a specialized cell, such as a
brain cell. Traditionally, there are two main types of stem cells: human embryonic stem cells [HESCs]
and adult somatic stem cells. In 1981,embryonic stem cells were the first type of stem cell to be
discovered (2). Embryonic stem cells originate from four to five day old embryos formed during the
blastocyst phase of embryological development. The embryos used to derive stem cells are usually
extras that were created using in vitro fertilization and not implanted (2).
Induced pluripotent stem cells [iPS cells] are specialized adult somatic cells that have been genetically
modified to function similarly to embryonic stem cells; that is, iPS cells have the ability to
differentiate into all adult cell types (2). The discovery of iPS cells in 2006 was very exciting for the
medical community as researchers hoped to use iPS cells in many ways, including: to gain an
increased understanding of disease pathology, as aids in transplant medicine, and in pharmaceutical
and cytotoxicity studies. Subsequent research on iPS cells has revealed some areas of concern
including:
