The Symbolism In The Wizard Of Oz
Early in the book, we see how Baum was influenced by color. It also appears that he may have wanted
to specifically make references to the United States in his book as well. When the meet Glinda, she is
described in the colors of the national flag, as a woman with rich red hair, a dress of pure white, and
blue eyes. 1 It appears as if the association of Glinda with the colors of red, white, and blue was not a
mere coincidence. Glinda plays an important role in the story, and while she is a witch, she is a good
and powerful witch. She also plays an important role at the end of the story when she is able to help
Dorothy achieve her dreams. Oz, the supposed powerful one, was not able to help Dorothy, but,
through Glinda, Dorothy finally learns the secret ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each country of Oz has its own distinct color (see diagram below). The arrangement of this color
scheme is also very important. There is no great symbolic meaning to the color scheme of Oz... but it
is not arbitrary either. The change from one region to another follows the principles of color theory.
Each of the three major countries visited in the Wizard of Oz has a primary color, one of the three
from which all others derive. Dorothy and her companions do not journey directly from one primary
color to another. Instead their path passes through a secondary one. To get to the West, they must go
through the green countryside around theEmerald City, merely a link between the blue land of the
Munchkins and the yellow Winkie Country. They also traverse from the Winkie Country to Glinda s
Castle in the red South by way of the Emerald City; the wild countryside they visit before arriving in
the Quadling Country is brown. It is made from all three primary colors or mixing green with red. The
standard color wheel puts blue to the right (East), yellow to the left (West) and red at the bottom
(South) like the Munchkins, Winkies, and

Persuasive Essay On A Promise Ring
There are many reasons to give a promise ring. You might want to show the depth of your
commitment to her. The two of you might want to show the world that you re a couple with the intent
to stay together forever. A promise ring can be a pre engagement ring, or it can be the promise to stay
true and pure for each other. There are as many reasons for the exchange or presentation of a promise
ring as there are people who give them to each other.
While some promise rings will be given to the girl or woman in the relationship, other couples will
purchase matching rings or ones that are interconnected to show their bond. We ve included a few
types of rings on this list, so you can decide what kind of ring you d like to have within the

Deucalion And Pyrrha Research Paper
The comparison of myths is primarily essential for understanding of culture historical areal of the
ancient world. Mythology itself became not only the main armuory for all the literature genres, but it
turned out to be an immediate predecessor of the relogio philosophical idea. The very myths were an
important form of folkloric and literature art, and continued to last within all the periods of ancient
communities existence as to reflect both the main steps in their development and relationships
between gods and people. Of relationships between mortals and immortals tell lots of different myths,
and rather important become the myths of gods punishing people because the last tended to get a false
idea of their own importance. These punishment usually were floods and casting into the hell fire. The
story of Deucalion and Pyrrha is one of these. When humanity became conceited and impious the
supreme god Zeus sent on people the flood, and only two had survived Deucalion Prometheus son,
and his wife Pyrrha Epimetheus daughter. After his father s advice Deucalion took a huge box, put in

The Various Forms of the Cosmological Argument for the Existence of God
The cosmological argument is a well established argument for the existence of God and it is also
known as the first cause argument.
The cosmological argument is based upon the belief that there is a first cause behind the existence of
universe and this was God. It has taken many forms and in the past has been presented in many ways.
So many philosophers have put their points across, philosophers like; Plato, Aquinas, Socrates, Hume,
Kant and many more.
The first person to put their point across was Plato. He argued that the power to produce the
movements plausibly comes before the power to receive it and pass it on. In ... Show more content on

Both Aquinas and Craig deny the infinite and yet argue that God is infinite. Believers of the argument
point out that God is unique and that the laws of nature do not apply to God.
In the five ways Anthony Kenny said that Aquinas s principle that nothing moves itself goes against
the fact that people and animals move themselves. He stated that Newton s first law of motion, in
which movement can be explained by a body s own sluggishness from previous motion, disapproves
Aquinas s argument. It is possible for object to have uniform motion as well as to be in a state of rest.
b)
The strengths of the Cosmological Argument lie in both its simplicity and easily comprehensible
concept that there cannot be an infinite number of causes to an event. Some arguments for God s
existence require more thought and training in terms and concepts, but this argument is basic and
simple. Also, it is perfectly logical to assert that objects do not bring themselves into existence and
must, therefore, have causes.
For must not the cause of existing things exist? We find ourselves faced with the possibility of an
infinite regress. If it is true of A that it is caused to exist by B, why may not B be caused to exist by C,
D, E...and so on ad infinitum? If there actually is a cause of

Analysis Of The Movie The Graduate Essay

12/16/2016
The Art of Symbolism in The Graduate The movie The Graduate is a struggle story of a fine caliber
that falls under the genre of comedic drama. Some might even argue that it was one of the best films
of its time and even till this day. The way the movie blends characters is anything but superficial and
its use of symbolism to describe said characters leaves little more to be desired. While some may not
like the movie and say it falls short the movie has proper use of symbolism through the use of multiple
props, it also uses symbolic statements as a way to strengthen Dustin Hoffman s character s archetype
and clue in on specific details which in turn shows us the relationships between him and other
characters. Of the many symbolic details the first two we encounter at the very beginning of the film
are cluing us in on the character of Dustin Hoffman who is known as Benjamin Braddock. The two
details happen almost simultaneously, one being the song The Sound of Silence by Paul Simon and
Art Garfunkel and the other is the symbolic action of him sliding across the screen on an airport
conveyor belt. The first detail, the song, suggests that the character Benjamin or Ben is lost in the
world. He has no idea where to go from this point in his life forward. He is lost in the darkness of life
and is directionless. The second detail is the conveyor belt which forcibly moving him along. This
conveys the fact that throughout

Gambling Should be Legalized.
Gambling should be legalized
What is gambling? According to www.dictionary.com gambling is taking a risk in the hope of gaining
an advantage or a benefit. Gambling has been around for centuries and has been dated way back to
1492. People have been gambling in America ever since America was found. There are numerous
underground cards clubs and casinos all over the country and in major cities. People gamble on
everything: sports evens, dice, and cards. Even though people gamble every day in the United States,
it is still illegal. People do gamble everyday, so why is it not legal. Gambling should be legalized.

Gambling is the only thing that is going for Las Vegas. With out gambling no one would go, and look
at how much money Las Vegas is bring in off of the tourists coming from all over the world, all
because of gambling.
So when people do gamble where does the money go? Where gambling in legal money gets divided
up. 84% returned to the public, 15% for commission, and 1% breakage or surplus (Freeman 167). This
shows that at the racetracks 84% go back to the people who are gambling, 15% goes to the brokers,
and 1% is the breakage or surplus. That is how the money works in the racetracks. Each state deals
with the money differently though.
These percentages include the deductions for monies for both Track and State. Each state has laws
specifying the division of this percentage between Track and State. Some states use a sliding scale.
The higher the volume of business, the higher the percentage paid to the state (Freeman 166).
As shown here the state taxes are included. Also, commission is used in all racetracks, and this
provided jobs for many people.
Another good reason why gambling should be legalized is because people can make a ton of money. If
people would be smart about things they could maximizes their profits. These people are called pros.
Professional poker players, like Johnny Moss, make all their money from playing cards. Gambling, if
done right, can be easy pickings for people.

Video Games Should Not Be A Sport Essay

During the reign of the Roman Empire, the trade networks that connected Africa, Europe, and Asia
flourished, however, after the fall of the Romans these trade routes saw a period of decline. This
period of decline, especially on the Silk Road, was due mainly to the fact that there was no longer a
regulatory body, such as the Roman Empire, to create a safe environment for merchants. However, in
the 600 when the Muslim religion began to form and grow, their empire was able to provide some
stability for the trade routes in Africa and Europe, as well as the most western parts of the Silk Road.
The Muslim tradition of the Hajj, a trip that fulfills one of the five pillars of Islam, was able to
increase trade in Saudi Arabia especially. Stability, and thus an increase in importance, was not truly
achieved for the Silk Road until 1200 when the Mongols were able to conquer most of Asia. The
Mongols were strong believers in the merchant system that worked along the Silk Road, therefore they
put in place strict safeguards for the merchants on that route. By the year 1200 most areas of the Afro

The Baltimore city community, where I serve, is predominantly a residential neighborhood in

Essay On The Art Of Camille Corot
When I first saw this painting done by Camille Corot, I was in awe. It was one of the many beautiful
paintings that I saw on my first trip to the Fine Arts Museum of Houston. The painting looks almost
dreamlike and soft, which amazed me on how a painter could create an art piece as such. This piece is
called Orpheus Leading Eurydice from the Underworld, by Camille Corot, French, 1861, the medium
is oil on canvas. I was immediately attracted to this art piece because of the earthy and naturalistic
colors used, and how the landscape seems almost hazy. This enchanting painting tells the tragic Greek
myth of Orpheus, the Greek god of music, saving his wife, Eurydice, from Hades, God of the
Underworld. Orpheus absentmindedly breaks the terms of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Devoted to his paintings he once said to a friend All I really want to do in life... is to paint landscapes.
This firm resolve will stop me forming any serious attachments. That is to say, I shall not get married .
I like the softness of how Corot painted this art piece. The painting, to me, looks simple yet
topographical, due to the trees and bushes painted. What I did not like about this piece is the way he
depicted the Underworld. The Underworld is said to be very dark and gloomy, due to all the dead
spirits living there, but Corot paints it with light and lush, making it look anything but eerie. He uses
Time and motion by showing Orpheus legs in a walking position, whilst holding Eurydice arm,
leading her out of the Hades Underworld. Also, the texture of the trees and bushes have a realistic
topographical and layered appearance with shades of blacks and browns. Since Corot is a landscape
painter, he often uses atmospheric perspective to create the illusion of depth. He shows the spirits
mourning their death in the background with shades of cool tones and uses light colors, while
emphasizing Eurydice and Orpheus in the foreground with more deep and darker colors. Another
element I ve seen in Corot s painting is his use of space, he shows Orpheus and Eurydice on the corner
right while the rest of the image is more focused on his beautiful landscape in the background.
Additionally, the focal point that immediately caught my eyes attention was the spirits depicted

Diagnosis Of The Community At Risk Essay
Asthma in Oakland California
Description of the Community at Risk Asthma has become a rising issue at hand, especially in
Oakland, California. Asthma is at an all time high in Oakland because of the factories and smog that
surrounds the local communities. After conducting research, I decided to dig deeper in asthma in
Oakland because I wanted to learn more and to see if there was a way to reduce the rise of asthma.
Asthma in Oakland is an issue for all ages, especially the younger ones because their lungs are still
developing. For my term paper, I plan to explore the disproportionate burden of hazard of the
population of air quality in Oakland, California, an area that is impacted by factory smoke, which can
lead to asthma in children who are 18 years of age or younger.
Along with Oakland, I came across research on Alameda County as well and decided to include some
of the findings from the articles. Oakland does not have the best or suitable air quality due to the large
number of the factories that surround the local communities so the quality of air is affected as well as
the individuals who have asthma. The factory exhaust and smoke make it harder for individuals with
asthma to breathe and the poor air quality can send them into an asthma attack. Also, some of the
schools in Oakland need to make sure they are up to date and have proper measures for children s
safety in the schools meaning proper ventilation.

The Iliad and the Odyssey are believed to be written down around 800 700 BC. Before then, the
stories were told orally. The poem the Iliad tells the story of Achilles, his anger, and his slaying of the
Trojan Hero Hector. The poem the Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus, and his decade long journey
back home after spending ten years in the Trojan war that lasted a decade. Though the events of the
Iliad took place during the Greek Bronze age, the culture portrayed is mirrored after the Dark Ages.
The Dark Ages, dated around 1000 800 BC, was a result of the fall of the Mycenaean civilization
which is dated between 1600 1000 BC. The cause of the decline of the Mycenaean civilization is
unknown, but the fall of the society caused social instability, creating a need for protection. This
created a society that relied heavily on the warrior class. During the Dark Ages, the warrior class are
considered the ruling class. In order for a man to lead, he has to demonstrate his ability as a warrior
through his strengths and intelligence. These characteristics are reflected in both Homers poem, in
which the main characters Achilles and Odysseus are both

Discontent Expressed through Blues, Jazz, Reggae, and Hip hop
In cultures all over the world, music can be seen encompassing many aspects of life for many
individuals. It is a form of mass communication that speaks directly to society as a cultural form , and
often reflects a collection and pattern of personal experiences (King 19). Music is so influential
because it communicates on three different levels: the physical, emotional, and cognitive. Not only
does it operate in a nondiscursive way, by affecting the physiological mode of the body, causing one to
move and dance, but it also encourages one to think. This paper will explore music as a form of
protest; showing how a political message, in general form, is presented through music. ... Show more

It was shaped by social and political oppression and it reflects a defiant attitude toward life. The blues
represents survival during hard times and it tells the basic facts of life. As can be seen in the music,
there is an emphasis on the immediacy of life, the nature of man, and human survival... formed from a
history of mental and physical hardships (Spencer 39).
It is a direct expression of the post slavery world view, linked to freeing the individual spirit.
The old blues redefined America s traditional values, and led to the vision of a new establishment
(Spencer 56). It directly spoke out against white America and the Puritan ethos that was forced upon
the slaves for centuries. The lyrics helped release America from the moral prison of this Puritanism,
and questioned the morality of Christianity and white society. In the music, there is an emphasis on
unity, with the joining of man and woman together, and their ultimate triumph over the machine
(Spencer 57).
Despite the obvious separation between the blues and the church, the blues is often seen as a secular
religion , as well as a form of art and modern mythology (Spencer 55). In comparing the blues singer
to a preacher, Charles Keil states, Blues singers and preachers both provide models and

Benefits Of Liberal Arts Education
The way children are educated early on has a direct influence on their development. There are two
primary forms of education that children are exposed to, the first being liberal arts. In a liberal arts
education the primary subjects taught are, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and formal
sciences. The goal of a liberal arts education is to prepare the student to deal with complexity,
diversity, and change to assist in their adaption to the world later on. The second form of education is
STEM, standing for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM education focuses
more on the analytical side of the school system with not as much thought given to the social and
artistic side as liberal arts does. STEM chooses to integrate science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics in a practical way with emphasis on real world application. The more beneficial of the
two is liberal arts because it exposes students to a more diverse education, it is affordable, and it helps
students gain an awareness of cultural diversity and varied perspectives. One of the advantages found
through a liberal arts education is that it exposes students to more diverse way of learning. Liberal arts
covers general areas of study which includes a variety of subjects such as, humanities, social sciences,
creative arts, and sciences. This is done without the intent of preparing students for a specific field of
work, but to instead equip them with an invaluable set of skills to

Statement Of Music Therapy
I believe that helping people and taking care of each other is our duty. We should use our talents to
accommodate the needs of not only ours but, others too. This is my motivation for becoming a Music
Therapist. This profession ties two of my strong interests as I have been a musician under
development for 7 years. I strongly believe and have been told that my personal qualities are exactly
what it takes to work in therapy. I am patient, respectful, responsible and supporting. These four
qualities are essential when working with vulnerable adults, adolescents, and children.
An immediate goal of mine is to improve my knowledge on all of the different types of illnesses that
are dealt with in Music Therapy. I have always been interested in ... Show more content on

I have gained experience with working with Nursery aged children, as well as secondary school
adolescents. Every day worked with school children is very rewarding when I know that I have taught
them something or, given them a fresh, new outlook on something. I continue to take on exciting
opportunities to work with charities. Due to the upcoming World Awareness Autism day, I will soon be
helping with the bucket collections in busy places in London. I believe that this is an exciting
opportunity because I will be able to share my gathered knowledge on Autism.
After completing the Postgraduate course at Anglia Ruskin University, I am eager to start work with
the NHS. My ideal sector would be the elderly, as I have gotten to know the Alzheimer s disease more,
it has become an increasingly desirable group for me to work within the future. Thus this would be my
ideal area of work, I would also like to experience working with Autistic patients because that is also
an interest of mine. I trust that my experience and skill set are a strong match to study on the Music

The Joy Luck Club Socratic Seminar Questions
The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, exposes the paradoxical relationships between Chinese immigrant
mothers and their American raised daughters. Although both sides experience their own strife in life,
the mothers are probably most notable for their struggle in assimilating to society. Given that they are
the first generations to have contact with the unfamiliar culture, they must set foot onto the foreign
land and sustain a stable life in order to provide for her children and give them a prosperous life. The
mothers are required to adapt to the language, environment, social roles, and etc. Flexibility and
adaptability varies from person to person. Before the novel begins, Tan introduces the story with a
brief prologue about a Shanghai women and her swan. Her prior expectations before coming to
America was crushed entirely by the reality she later encounters. The woman sworn to give her
American raised daughter the swan feather and tell her [the story] in perfect American English (pg. 3)
one day. This is an example of culture shock which is common for many people who move to another
country. Culture shock , as the Oxford Dictionary defines it, is a disorientation experienced when [one
is] suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture. My experience as an American raised Chinese is
somewhat similar to the novel. I lacked an English background, but I did not experience much

Process Of Memory Essay
Many wonder the process of memory storage. People during a day use a lot of space of the memory to
storage which will be used weekly. Memory in the psychology terms means a process in which
information is encoded, stored, and retrieved. When the information is encoded, it will allow the
information from the outside world to reach the senses as chemical and physical stimuli forms. The
first stage is when the change in information so the memory can be put into an encoding process.
Second stage is a storage process. In this process we get to know the details of what information and
how much we have over periods of time. The last process is the retrieval of the information that we
have stored stage. Here we try to locate it and return it back to our consciousness but sometimes it is
worthless because it varies on the information type we had stored. There are three types of information
processing: first is Encoding and Registration where we receive, process and combine the received
information, then is Storage where creation of permanent record of the encoded information, last is
Retrieval, recall or recollection where we call back the stored information in response of cue so it can
be used in a process or activity. Sensory memory allows an individual s retrain impressions of the
sensory information after the original stimulus has ceased. An example of this sensory memory is a
child s ability to write letters and make circles from twirling a sparkler at night, because when it

Comparing Odyssey And Perseus Of Homer s Odyssey
If I were to summarize Clash of the Titans, it would be that Perseus, son of Zeus, watched his entire
family die as a result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, as a result of which he pursues the
gorgon medusa in order to use her head to defeat the kraken. My summery of the Greek version would
be that, Perseus; son of Zeus was cast out on the ocean with his mother in a trunk. After being
discovered by a fisherman, Perseus grows up accepting his godly half, goes after medusa to save his
mother s marriage. In the process he saves a women who soon became his wife using the head of the
gorgon, Medusa. Though the story and movie were from very different time periods there are still
several similarities. Several similarities between the movie and Greek version include, Perseus saved a
women using the head of the then slain gorgon medusa. Another similarity would be that he and his
mother were found in the ocean floating in a trunk in both versions. Yet another similarity between the
versions would be that, Perseus refuses to live on Olympus with his father. In both versions, the reason
for the princess being sacrificed, result from the queen insulting the beauty of the goddess Aphrodite.
Another big similarity between both versions would be that Perseus unknowingly fulfilled a prophecy.

Another difference would be that in the Greek version Perseus kills his mother s father. Yet another
difference, in the movie Perseus is fighting for revenge on the god Hades. In the movie version
Perseus has much help in order to slay the gorgon, medusa while in the Greek version, Perseus slays
medusa without help from any other mortals. In the movie Perseus banishes Hades back to the

Reforms in Chinese Agriculture Have Had Its Successes and...
Reforms in Chinese Agriculture have had its successes and failures over time. Originally, the
agricultural sector was operating under a centrally planned system and now it is working its way to a
market oriented agricultural sector. In this paper the focus is going to be on the positive and or
negative effects of the Great Leap Forward Movement, The Cultural Revolution, the commune
system, and, the responsibility system. Furthermore, the performance of grain production over the
period of 1952 to 1988 will be briefly discussed.
An important first movement was The Great Leap Forward Movement, which was headed by Mao
Zedong in 1958. This movement brought about the creation of communes, which is a collective
economic unit. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Between 1958 and 1984, the communes were responsible for procuring grain, for drawing up plans for
subordinate units (the production brigades and teams), and for managing water and pest control,
afforestation, and transportation projects. They also operated facilities for marketing crops, as well as
stores selling consumer goods, seed, fertilizer, implements, and other farm inputs. So basically by
1985 the communes were transformed to economic units with no political influence. The commune
movement was the key starting point for Chinese rural agriculture to become decentralized or in other
words become free from complete control of the central government.
The reform of agriculture was required when the Chinese leaders finished experimenting with the
commune system and central economic planning. They became aware of its many down falls and so
they began to concentrate on a more market oriented economy. One of the main shortcomings of the
commune system was that farm workers had no incentive to work hard because they were not
rewarded for their efforts. The farmers knew how to run the farms efficiently, but their hands were tied
under the commune system by the central government.
All things changed when the responsibility system came into effect. This responsibility system is
similar to private farming in a market economy, with

Our Safeguards Against Cyberterrorism And What We Can Do...
Nathaniel Howard
COMS 3053
Paper #1
Our Safeguards against Cyberterrorism In reality, attacks in cyber space happen all the time. Over 20
million cyber attacks happened within Utah in 2013 each day, and this was from Utah s government
websites, not including businesses. ( Fortis Blog ) Just imagine the various ways one could hack a
website. Someone can even look up how to do it nowadays, and with at least half of the population in
the U.S. using a computer, there are an untold number of people who use hack from inside the country.
There are also those who hack from outside the country, and that is at least enough to accumulate up
to 20 million attacks a day. Unfortunately, there are fewer ways to secure ourselves from these attacks,
but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just as a hacker can get information from any citizen in the world, a cyber terrorist can get information
from any government. The methods used to block these attacks could also be similar, even though
there might be a few select methods tailored to each.
Why do we need safeguards?
As it was stated earlier, attacks happen every day, probably too many to count, and the need to secure
our systems grows exponentially every day. New systems, devices, programs, etc., are being
developed, and the current growth of technology is quite staggering. We also give our information
online in order to use several services, such as Facebook and Amazon. This information can be used
against us, and used to find other pieces of personal information, such as a social security number. The
concern to guard our technology was present before some of us were even born. For example, in 1982,
the CIA created the logic bomb to disrupt a pipeline in Siberia, which opened up a new tool for
hackers ( 25 Biggest Cyber Attacks, 2013). In 2007, the email address belonging to the Secretary of
Defense was hacked as part of a spree to exploit weaknesses at the Pentagon ( history of cyber attacks
). Even a high ranking official s email address wasn t safe from cyberterrorists. This information alone
should scare some people into making cyber security the top of their worry list. Everyone s
information is always at risk.
How can we be attacked?
A hacked, or exposed, computer

  • 3. The Symbolism In The Wizard Of Oz Early in the book, we see how Baum was influenced by color. It also appears that he may have wanted to specifically make references to the United States in his book as well. When the meet Glinda, she is described in the colors of the national flag, as a woman with rich red hair, a dress of pure white, and blue eyes. 1 It appears as if the association of Glinda with the colors of red, white, and blue was not a mere coincidence. Glinda plays an important role in the story, and while she is a witch, she is a good and powerful witch. There is no great symbolic meaning to the color scheme of Oz... but it is not arbitrary either. The change from one region to another follows the principles of color theory. Each of the three major countries visited in the Wizard of Oz has a primary color, one of the three from which all others derive. Dorothy and her companions do not journey directly from one primary color to another. Instead their path passes through a secondary one. To get to the West, they must go through the green countryside around theEmerald City, merely a link between the blue land of the Munchkins and the yellow Winkie Country. They also traverse from the Winkie Country to Glinda s Castle in the red South by way of the Emerald City; the wild countryside they visit before arriving in the Quadling Country is brown. It has taken many forms and in the past has been presented in many ways. So many philosophers have put their points across, philosophers like; Plato, Aquinas, Socrates, Hume, Kant and many more. Believers of the argument point out that God is unique and that the laws of nature do not apply to God. He stated that Newton s first law of motion, in which movement can be explained by a body s own sluggishness from previous motion, disapproves Aquinas s argument. It is possible for object to have uniform motion as well as to be in a state of rest. b) The strengths of the Cosmological Argument lie in both its simplicity and easily comprehensible concept that there cannot be an infinite number of causes to an event. Some arguments for God s existence require more thought and training in terms and concepts, but this argument is basic and simple. Also, it is perfectly logical to assert that objects do not bring themselves into existence and must, therefore, have causes. For must not the cause of existing things exist? Analysis Of The Movie The Graduate Essay Edward Brambila English 2 Prof. Sosner 12/16/2016 The Art of Symbolism in The Graduate The movie The Graduate is a struggle story of a fine caliber that falls under the genre of comedic drama. Some might even argue that it was one of the best films of its time and even till this day. The way the movie blends characters is anything but superficial and its use of symbolism to describe said characters leaves little more to be desired. While some may not like the movie and say it falls short the movie has proper use of symbolism through the use of multiple props, it also uses symbolic statements as a way to strengthen Dustin Hoffman s character s archetype and clue in on specific details which in turn shows us the relationships between him and other characters. Of the many symbolic details the first two we encounter at the very beginning of the film are cluing us in on the character of Dustin Hoffman who is known as Benjamin Braddock. The two details happen almost simultaneously, one being the song The Sound of Silence by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel and the other is the symbolic action of him sliding across the screen on an airport conveyor belt. The first detail, the song, suggests that the character Benjamin or Ben is lost in the world. He has no idea where to go from this point in his life forward. He is lost in the darkness of life and is directionless. The second detail is the conveyor belt which forcibly moving him along. This conveys the fact that throughout ... The Underworld is said to be very dark and gloomy, due to all the dead spirits living there, but Corot paints it with light and lush, making it look anything but eerie. He uses Time and motion by showing Orpheus legs in a walking position, whilst holding Eurydice arm, leading her out of the Hades Underworld. Also, the texture of the trees and bushes have a realistic topographical and layered appearance with shades of blacks and browns. Since Corot is a landscape painter, he often uses atmospheric perspective to create the illusion of depth. He shows the spirits mourning their death in the background with shades of cool tones and uses light colors, while emphasizing Eurydice and Orpheus in the foreground with more deep and darker colors. Another element I ve seen in Corot s painting is his use of space, he shows Orpheus and Eurydice on the corner right while the rest of the image is more focused on his beautiful landscape in the background. Additionally, the focal point that immediately caught my eyes attention was the spirits depicted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. Diagnosis Of The Community At Risk Essay Asthma in Oakland California Description of the Community at Risk Asthma has become a rising issue at hand, especially in Oakland, California. Asthma is at an all time high in Oakland because of the factories and smog that surrounds the local communities. After conducting research, I decided to dig deeper in asthma in Oakland because I wanted to learn more and to see if there was a way to reduce the rise of asthma. Asthma in Oakland is an issue for all ages, especially the younger ones because their lungs are still developing. For my term paper, I plan to explore the disproportionate burden of hazard of the population of air quality in Oakland, California, an area that is impacted by factory smoke, which can lead to asthma in children who are 18 years of age or younger. Along with Oakland, I came across research on Alameda County as well and decided to include some of the findings from the articles. Oakland does not have the best or suitable air quality due to the large number of the factories that surround the local communities so the quality of air is affected as well as the individuals who have asthma. The factory exhaust and smoke make it harder for individuals with asthma to breathe and the poor air quality can send them into an asthma attack. Also, some of the schools in Oakland need to make sure they are up to date and have proper measures for children s safety in the schools meaning proper ventilation. According to the Bay Area 2013 census, there are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Discontent Expressed through Blues, Jazz, Reggae, and Hip hop In cultures all over the world, music can be seen encompassing many aspects of life for many individuals. It is a form of mass communication that speaks directly to society as a cultural form , and often reflects a collection and pattern of personal experiences (King 19). Music is so influential because it communicates on three different levels: the physical, emotional, and cognitive. Not only does it operate in a nondiscursive way, by affecting the physiological mode of the body, causing one to move and dance, but it also encourages one to think. It was shaped by social and political oppression and it reflects a defiant attitude toward life. The blues represents survival during hard times and it tells the basic facts of life. As can be seen in the music, there is an emphasis on the immediacy of life, the nature of man, and human survival... formed from a history of mental and physical hardships (Spencer 39). It is a direct expression of the post slavery world view, linked to freeing the individual spirit. The old blues redefined America s traditional values, and led to the vision of a new establishment (Spencer 56). It directly spoke out against white America and the Puritan ethos that was forced upon the slaves for centuries. The lyrics helped release America from the moral prison of this Puritanism, and questioned the morality of Christianity and white society. In the music, there is an emphasis on unity, with the joining of man and woman together, and their ultimate triumph over the machine (Spencer 57). Despite the obvious separation between the blues and the church, the blues is often seen as a secular religion , as well as a form of art and modern mythology (Spencer 55). • 24. Benefits Of Liberal Arts Education The way children are educated early on has a direct influence on their development. There are two primary forms of education that children are exposed to, the first being liberal arts. In a liberal arts education the primary subjects taught are, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and formal sciences. The goal of a liberal arts education is to prepare the student to deal with complexity, diversity, and change to assist in their adaption to the world later on. The second form of education is STEM, standing for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM education focuses more on the analytical side of the school system with not as much thought given to the social and artistic side as liberal arts does. STEM chooses to integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a practical way with emphasis on real world application. The more beneficial of the two is liberal arts because it exposes students to a more diverse education, it is affordable, and it helps students gain an awareness of cultural diversity and varied perspectives. One of the advantages found through a liberal arts education is that it exposes students to more diverse way of learning. The Joy Luck Club Socratic Seminar Questions Jia yi (Jenny) Cen AP Literature and Composition 23 July 2015 The Joy Luck Club Socratic Seminar Questions The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, exposes the paradoxical relationships between Chinese immigrant mothers and their American raised daughters. Although both sides experience their own strife in life, the mothers are probably most notable for their struggle in assimilating to society. Given that they are the first generations to have contact with the unfamiliar culture, they must set foot onto the foreign land and sustain a stable life in order to provide for her children and give them a prosperous life. The mothers are required to adapt to the language, environment, social roles, and etc. Flexibility and adaptability varies from person to person. • 27. Process Of Memory Essay Many wonder the process of memory storage. People during a day use a lot of space of the memory to storage which will be used weekly. Memory in the psychology terms means a process in which information is encoded, stored, and retrieved. When the information is encoded, it will allow the information from the outside world to reach the senses as chemical and physical stimuli forms. The first stage is when the change in information so the memory can be put into an encoding process. Second stage is a storage process. In this process we get to know the details of what information and how much we have over periods of time. The last process is the retrieval of the information that we have stored stage. Here we try to locate it and return it back to our consciousness but sometimes it is worthless because it varies on the information type we had stored. There are three types of information processing: first is Encoding and Registration where we receive, process and combine the received information, then is Storage where creation of permanent record of the encoded information, last is Retrieval, recall or recollection where we call back the stored information in response of cue so it can be used in a process or activity. Sensory memory allows an individual s retrain impressions of the sensory information after the original stimulus has ceased. • 28. Comparing Odyssey And Perseus Of Homer s Odyssey If I were to summarize Clash of the Titans, it would be that Perseus, son of Zeus, watched his entire family die as a result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, as a result of which he pursues the gorgon medusa in order to use her head to defeat the kraken. My summery of the Greek version would be that, Perseus; son of Zeus was cast out on the ocean with his mother in a trunk. After being discovered by a fisherman, Perseus grows up accepting his godly half, goes after medusa to save his mother s marriage. In the process he saves a women who soon became his wife using the head of the gorgon, Medusa. Though the story and movie were from very different time periods there are still several similarities. Several similarities between the movie and Greek version include, Perseus saved a women using the head of the then slain gorgon medusa. Another similarity would be that he and his mother were found in the ocean floating in a trunk in both versions. Yet another similarity between the versions would be that, Perseus refuses to live on Olympus with his father. In both versions, the reason for the princess being sacrificed, result from the queen insulting the beauty of the goddess Aphrodite. Originally, the agricultural sector was operating under a centrally planned system and now it is working its way to a market oriented agricultural sector. In this paper the focus is going to be on the positive and or negative effects of the Great Leap Forward Movement, The Cultural Revolution, the commune system, and, the responsibility system. Furthermore, the performance of grain production over the period of 1952 to 1988 will be briefly discussed. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Between 1958 and 1984, the communes were responsible for procuring grain, for drawing up plans for subordinate units (the production brigades and teams), and for managing water and pest control, afforestation, and transportation projects. They also operated facilities for marketing crops, as well as stores selling consumer goods, seed, fertilizer, implements, and other farm inputs. So basically by 1985 the communes were transformed to economic units with no political influence. The commune movement was the key starting point for Chinese rural agriculture to become decentralized or in other words become free from complete control of the central government. The reform of agriculture was required when the Chinese leaders finished experimenting with the commune system and central economic planning. They became aware of its many down falls and so they began to concentrate on a more market oriented economy. One of the main shortcomings of the commune system was that farm workers had no incentive to work hard because they were not rewarded for their efforts. The farmers knew how to run the farms efficiently, but their hands were tied under the commune system by the central government. All things changed when the responsibility system came into effect. This responsibility system is similar to private farming in a market economy, with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As it was stated earlier, attacks happen every day, probably too many to count, and the need to secure our systems grows exponentially every day. New systems, devices, programs, etc., are being developed, and the current growth of technology is quite staggering. We also give our information online in order to use several services, such as Facebook and Amazon. In 2007, the email address belonging to the Secretary of Defense was hacked as part of a spree to exploit weaknesses at the Pentagon ( history of cyber attacks ).
