Skymen Greek Analysis
Long ago, in the skies above what is now present day Earth was a so called group of Giants who
go by the name of, Skymen, led by none other than Chief Tekos. Naturally, just like in every
society, a group of bandits were formed who called themselves the Toothless Company, led by the
Menacing Soket. Soket, along with a group of his henchman quickly got bored of terrorising the
Giants, seeing as everyone has already caught onto their act and searched for a new means of
entertainment . Word had gotten around of a new, mystical and forbidden land which was known
as Earthto the common people, and this was when Soket thought to himself that no other better way
existed to spread terror than to mess with the one thing that was forbidden among... Show more

As a result, humans were being killed and displaced from their homes left and right at an alarming
rate and if such events were to continue, the Earth may have become void of all habitable land and
consequently the extinction of the human race. After what seemed like a lifetime, the prayers to
the gods had reached the Elders of the Skymen, more specifically Chief Tekos who had the
power to bring about an innumerous amount of punishments. In what can be considered a rare
sight Chief Tekos made his way down to Earth in a way unexplainable to humans. Once again
did the people quiet down and secretly converse with each other, Look up at the sky, did you see
the flashes of bright lights and the reptilian like creature who appeared to be carried down on the
shoulders of angels? Could it be? The savior who we have longed for in our prayers? At the time,
Chief Tekos was ready to serve justice and punish the giants who were responsible for terrorising his

Assessment of English Language Learners
Assessment of English Language Learners Alisha C. Green Grand Canyon University: ESL 533N
Advanced Methodologies of Structured English Instruction December 12, 2012 Abstract
Assessments are a critical tool in monitoring the progress of English language learners at all grade
levels. The main purpose of assessments is to ensure students are receiving quality teaching
instruction in accordance to academic and content standards. Even though these tests are not the
only resource used for testing students, they provide teachers with invaluable data to determine if
the student is growing in certain academic areas. There are several types of assessment that can be
used to measure a student s progress. In this paper, various alternatives to... Show more content on

2. Students are allowed to receive information through auditory, visual and tactile and other sensory
activities in an effort to increase understanding of assessment material. 3. Students are able to work
in an environment that has fewer distractions in an effort to stay on task. 4. Students are able to
have directions repeated to them and have directions said in their native language
(www.doe.state.la.us). There are not many advantages for English language learners whereas
standardized testing is concerned. Teachers will have to create individualized ways in monitoring
students progress to gain true assessment results. Part Two In an effort to gain useable and positive
feedback from English language learners, teachers must use ongoing assessments. Whereas
standardized tests only give information on students during a certain part of the year, ongoing
assessments will allow teachers to monitor students progress throughout the year. Informal
assessments are very beneficial in monitoring the progress of students. One type of informal
assessment is the use of role playing. During role playing, students are given opportunities to speak
in English dealing with different situations. This assessment will let the teacher observe how well
the student is comprehends the scenarios and how they respond to them. This type of assessment is
effective because it allows students to put the English language into use increasing their English

Stereotypes In Death Knocks By Woody Allen
Characters play the most important role in a story, poem, or play. They move along the plot to
keep everything interesting, and of course nothing would happen if there were no characters. In
the play Death Knocks by Woody Allen, the readers are presented with two silly characters who
give a twist on their stereotypes. In the play there is a 57 year old man by the name of Nat and the
personified Death. Death has come to take Nat away, but the events turn and things do not go as
planned, and Nat ends up getting an extra day. This happens because Death is clumsy and unsure of
himself unlike the terrifying monster that he is usually portrayed as. Death is characterized
unusually compared to the normal portrayal of Death because in the play Death... Show more

The first of these characteristics is human weaknesses. As soon as the play starts the readers see
that Death is not shown the way he is normally seen. Death climbs up the drainpipe on the side
of Nat s house and enters through the windowsill. When Death gets inside he comments I nearly
broke my neck. I m shaking like a leaf (1067). With a normal characterization of Death, he is
immortal and unable to be injured, but in this play he is injured many times. Death says that he is
liable to get gangrene yet, but that of course would not happen if death were characterized
stereotypically (1068). While playing gin rummy Death calls Nat the wrong name and blames it
on a headache. The readers cannot be sure whether this is a lie to cover up his inability to
remember the name of his first job or if his head actually does hurt. Either way, this human
weakness is not characteristic of the common portrayal of Death. In the final part of the play when
death is leaving he falls down the stairs which shows how clumsy he is. This action is unusual
because when one usually thinks about Death, he is graceful and terrifying, not clumsy and goofy.
Throughout the play Death is characterized in such an unusual way through Allen giving him
human weaknesses that are not usually

Latin Music Thesis
Growing up in Arizona where the Hispanic culture is so vibrant and plentiful, I have spent much
time surrounded by the rich music of their people, and have had that ingrained into my mind as
what Latin music is since I was a child. That same sentiment can be shared by much of the west
coast, yet if one were to ask someone on the east coast or Midwest what Latin music is, their
answers will all differ. This is because Latin music is not one dimensional, nor is it only in
reference to the Spanish influences to said music, but in actuality encompasses the entire Latin
experience and accounts for many geographical locations and differences. The Latin music genre
has grown and adapted to how society has changed overtime to include newer subcultures of music
within the genre itself in order to produce never before seen fusions and styles that lead the way
for ground breaking movements. Being born in the late 1990s, I... Show more content on

From my perspective, you can have as much research as you like on a subject, but you can never
know exactly what it was like because you yourself were not there. By having those firsthand
interviews, it added a level of credibility to the information and I found myself genuinely
interested and fascinated by what they had to share. Take Barbara Craddock for example, she
recounted her first experience at the Palladium, which was the home of the Mambo, and during
her experience there a couple came out to dance and she says in 1955, to have a couple a mixed
couple dance on the stage, ay stage, had never been done before. This woman experienced history,
and hearing the story directly from her, an actual participant of that history, makes me remember it

Mcdonald s Liability
Essentially, Ritenbaugh expressed that God s word shows that He holds people accountable for
liability when people have careless disregard towards other people.
Conclusions
The case of Liebeck v. McDonald s clearly illustrates that companies must be mindful of not
harming consumers through defective provides, because consumers that are harmed by products,
have the ability to successfully win awards to be compensated for damages. With that in mind, it is
recommended that Divine Coffee Shops reduce coffee temperatures. According to the Burn
Foundation (2016), to eliminate the risk of burns, hot liquids should not be served beyond 160
degrees. The full article published by the Burn Foundation can be found here: http:/
/www.burnfoundation.org/programs/resource.cfm?c=1 a=3. To ensure that our customers are
protected, we must implement a policy of checking the temperature of the coffee, before serving
customers. The case of Liebeck v. McDonald s was been repeatedly cited as an example of
frivolous litigation in the United States. However, to Stella Liebeck, the lawsuit was not frivolous.
In summary, the outcome of the Liebeck v. McDonald s case resulted in Stella Liebeck having the
ability to hold McDonald s accountable for her third degree burns. ... Show more content on

For Stella Liebeck, product liability laws protected her by ensuring she was compensated for the
pain and financial burdens she endured. For McDonald s, product liability laws resulted in the
company hopefully realizing that the issue of the coffee being too hot needed to be corrected to
make certain that other consumers were not harmed. For the customer s of McDonalds, product
liability laws worked by future consumers not being harmed by McDonald s hot coffee, if the
company took the right steps to correct the problem, and by jurors sending the message that if

Genetic Disease Is An Autosomal Dominant Neurodegenerative...
Genetic diseases are diseases that are passed on from parents to their offspring. An example of a
genetic disease which can be inherited is Huntington Disease. Huntington Disease is an autosomal
dominant neurodegenerative disorder with midlife onset characterised by psychiatric, cognitive and
motor symptoms (G. Vonsattel and DiFiglia, 1998). The statistics for HD blah blah blah Like all
genetic diseases, huntington s disease has a specific inheritance pattern.
Huntington disease is an autosomal disease this means that the defective gene does not occur on
one of the sex chromosomes but instead it occurs on one of the other 22 chromosomes (known
as autosomes). It is a also a dominant disorder so therefore only one copy of the altered gene,
passed on from a parent who has it, is necessary to cause their offspring to inherit the disease. If
one of the parents has the defective gene their offspring will have a 50/50 chance of inheriting that
gene. (See Figure 1).
If the offspring inherits the gene it is guaranteed that they will develop Huntington s disease at
some point in their life time, the disease does not skip generations. The defective gene is not
present on either of the sex chromosomes resulting in the disease being independent of gender. This
means that male and female offspring will have an equal risk of inheriting the disease. The faulty
gene (the HD gene) that is to blame for the development of huntington s disease is located on
chromosome 4 (See Figure 2), it

There were many forms of acne, ranging from blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples to severe
forms such as cystic or modular acne. Da Silva, whose scientific background was with lasers,
had seen dermatologists use laser technologies in the treatment of mild to moderate
inflammatory acne, most commonly referred to as pimples, breakouts, blemishes, or zits. Choi
summarized the science behind the laser treatments: Lasers treat acne in two possible ways. At
certain wavelengths or colors lasers go into the skin tissue and generate oxygen radicals, which
kill the bacteria and reduce inflammation. At other wavelengths, lasers are basically heat sources
that reduce sebum [an oily substance produced by certain skin glands] production by killing and
reducing the number of sebaceous glands. This decreases the likelihood that excess sebum
clogs pores, which can lead to acne. 2 This document is authorized for use only by Rachel van

A Survey Report On Malaysian Diaspora
Introduction
To better understand what media sources the Singaporean diaspora uses to find out about news
back home in Singapore, I conducted a survey amongst Singaporeans based overseas, namely in
places such as Australia, the United States, some countries in South East Asia and also in Europe.
The demographics used were age based, dispersed mainly among working class adults and
university students.
The survey resulted in a 40% readership of www.straitstimes.com, the online version of Singapore s
leading newspaper The Straits Times and a 27% readership of another website, which is also a
subsidiary of the Straits Times, called Stomp. Going from these numbers, one can say that the
bulk of Singaporeans overseas still rely heavily on the online version of The Straits Times for
news back home in Singapore. From here, I can conclude that the key media outlet utilised by
Singaporeans overseas would be the StraitsTimes.com. My survey also includes the purposes of
these sites, namely what Singaporeans use these sites for and how much whether or not they
consider these sources to be relevant.
In this essay, I intend to analyse the The Straits Times and its online counterpart,
www.straitstimes.com , as well as its other subsidiary STOMP (Straits Times Online Mobile Print).
Given the premise that www.straitstimes.com is reflective of its parent, The Straits Times, it is
imperative that we analyse The Straits Times as a whole, taking into consideration that in the end

The Crisis On The Real Estate Market
House bubble situation on the real estate market is presented by condition when there are low
supply and high demand at the same time, which causes shortage on the market. (Yoshino,
Nakamura and Sakai, 2013). Moreover, house price bubble is always associated with speculators
who are buying houses with the goal to resell it in the short term. These conditions appeared on
London real estatemarket and caused В«Bubble TroubleВ». This essay will discuss main causes of
the bubble, matters of its bursting and danger, connected with bursting.
Very high indexes of demand in London are mostly caused by several components, such as:
desirability of London, job opportunities and real estate market seen as investment.
London is considered to be one of the most desirable cities to work and live in (Kollewe, 2014).
One of the reasons of this indicator is connected with В«best jobs and economic opportunities .
(Chakrabortty, 2014). Moreover, people want to move to London, considering В«high salary
prospects, public healthcare and cultural diversity . Vast majority of foreigners (65 percent)
consider buying property in London as investment (Statista, 2013), without goal to let for rent or
live there (BNP Paribas real estate guide to investing in London, 2013). This is the most popular
В«alternativeВ» investment. (Gardina, 2010), which allows diversification of portfolio and
spreads risk in the long term. (Mattson Teig, 2014). This increasing percent of not to rent type of
property causes lack of

What Is Candide A Satire
Naivete and Satire in Jonathan Swifts Gulliver s Travels and Voltaire s Candide
A child has the ability to make the most critical and objective observation on society and the
behavior of man. How is this possible? A child has yet to mature and lacks proper education and
experience. However, it is for this very reason that a child would make the perfect social scientist;
his or her naivete may provide an excellent means of objective criticism and most often satire. A
child s curious nature and hunger for knowledge would bring about an unbiased questioning of
social structures, minus the brainwashing of these very institutions, and his or her vulnerability
would expose any societal dangers present. This child like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Finally, both works are travel tales, which expose the main characters to many perspectives. This
allows the authors to satirize many aspects of society.
These two satirical works make litotes of preposterous situations, thus shedding light on the
absurdity at hand. This is an especially effective technique, because a character or narrator is
involved in a ridiculous situation. The reader, from an aesthetic distance, is then able to recognize
the foolishness of the incident. After careful consideration, a satirical conclusion may be drawn. For
example, Voltaire s narrator describes a brutal battle scene in a lighthearted manner:
Nothing could have been more splendid, brilliant, smart or orderly than the two armies . . . . then
rifle fire removed from our best of worlds about nine or ten thousand scoundrels who had been
infesting its surface. The bayonet was also the sufficient reason for the death of several thousand
men. (22 23)
The diction in this passage is ironic. By referring to a battle as splendid (22) and brilliant (22), the
narrator demonstrates how common the idea of warfare has become and how little the human life
is valued. Also, the phrase, Our best of worlds (22 23) identifies optimism as a focus of this
satirical attack (Maurois 100). In this way, the narrator nonchalantly discusses grave matters.
Maurois cited both Voltaire and Swift as using this

American history is filled with an abundant amount of fictional pop culture icons, ranging from
web slinging vigilantes to detectives in bat costumes. These characters have not only evolved
media and literature, but they have also become a strong representation of political topics. And,
while many characters may have detoured from their original values and ethics, one has remained
a prime example of political activism, civil rights, and social justice. Diana Prince the Wonder

Case Study Of Brooke Shields Essay
Case Study Individual: Brooke Shields Actress Brooke Shields was born in 1965 in New York
City, and has been in the limelight ever since she was 11 months old, she acted in movies since
she was a teenager, modeled for Calvin Klein, and even graduated from Princeton University with a
bachelor s degree in French Literature. Shields was married to Andre Agassi, a professional tennis
player, but the two split inn 1999 the same year she met her current husband Chris Henchy, a
television writer, with whom she has two daughters with.
Diagnosis:
Brooke was diagnosed with severe postpartum depression. Postpartum depression is something that
not only mothers but fathers may also experience after the birth of a child. It is more common for
new mothers to go through this depression within the first four weeks after childbirth, in some cases
it may not be present until six months after birth. Postpartum depression can affect all women and
about half of the women diagnosed with PPD have never experienced depression, but 1 in 7
women are diagnosed with PPD.
History of Presenting Problem: The history of the presenting problem was Brooke s past experience
with pregnancy and also the way that she was behaving and feeling towards her daughter that her

Path Analysis Paper
Main analyses involved running each of three models through AMOS SEM software separately,
using path analysis techniques to assess direct and indirect effects, among the present observed
variables (Arbuckle, 2013). Path analysis, which is based on multiple regressions, examines the
relationship between exogenous (i.e., variablenot causes by another variable, but effects one or
more variablesin model) and endogenous variables (i.e., a variable that is caused or effected by
one or more variables in a model; Iacobucci, 2010). Path models examine the total effects, as well
as the direct and indirect of effects of variables in a single model, simultaneously (Peterson et al.,
2014). Structural equation modeling path analysis techniques are superior to standard regression
analyses in that they: 1) provide more accurate estimates of the effects of hypothesized variables; 2)
estimate all effects simultaneously; 3) allow for greater accuracy of parameter estimates when
examining competing models; and 4) allow the researcher to compare effects of multiple mediators
(Zhao, Lynch, Chen, 2010).

The Design of a Uniform Pore Structure Is Favorable to...
The isotherms of three samples investigated by the nitrogen adsorption/desorption were shown in
Figure 2. The curves of all three samples show hysteresis behavior and belong to type IV
isotherms31. It suggests that our samples exhibit mesoporous structure with pore sizes larger
than 5.6 nm (Table 2). The pore diameter of thiol functionalized SBA 15 calculated by the BJH
theory is smaller than that of SBA 15, which is attributed to the anchoring of thiol moiety to the
silanol group in the interior wall of SBA 1540. The decrease of pore size, while maintaining type
IV isotherm characteristics in thiol functionalized SBA 15, is one possible reason that thiol
moieties are located along the interior pore channels of SBA 15, not in the internal framework
of SBA 15. The further decrease of pore size in Bi thiol functionalized SBA 15 can be explained
by the attachment of bismuth to the thiol group, narrowing the inner pore channel of SBA 15.
The BET surface areas of SBA 15, thiol functionalized SBA 15, and Bi thiol functionalized SBA
15 are 847, 512, and 347 m2/g, respectively. The pore volumes of those are 1.03, 0.85, and 0.62
cm3/g, respectively (shown in Table 2). The gradual decrease of the surface area and pore volume
can also be understood in the attachment of thiol group to the inner wall of SBA 15 or bismuth to
the thiol group as discussed above. Interestingly, the pore diameter of Bi SBA 15 is similar to that
of SBA 15, indicating that bismuth is not impregnated to the

Heroin And Its Effects On The United States
Heroin in the USA has become an ever increasing problem that we must work hard to solve. It is
taking over people s lives and their family s lives as well. Nevertheless, heroin is not going away
any time soon, therefore we have to find a way to prevent people from overdosing, contracting
STDs through shared needles, and try finding any other way to help heroinaddicts, one of which is
by introducing anti opiate drugs, such as Naxaloone, Methadone, and Buprenorphine в†ђ THIS
SENTENCE IS A COMMA SPLICE. These said drugs would fight all the heroin induced
chemicals, until eradicating the necessity for heroin. It is essentially like rewiring your brain to get
rid of the opiates.
An estimated 22 million Americans are dependent on or abusing drugs or alcohol, at huge costs to
society. Deaths from overdoses due to heroin and other opioids, including the prescription
painkillers. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has called a public health crisis. (par #1) But some
scientist and clinics are calling it a genetic problem or an addiction.
All heroin users not just those who injected the drug risk becoming addicted. Individuals who abuse
heroin over time develop a tolerance for the drug, meaning that they must use increasingly larger
doses to achieve the same intensity or effect they experienced when they first began using the drug.
Heroin ceases to produce feeling of pleasure in users who develop tolerance: instead, these users
must continue taking that dug simply to feel normal.

Problems Within Epistemology A New Approach Essay
Fred Dretske (2005) rejects the claim that closure holds over known entailment. Dretske argues that
propositions, P, have heavyweight implications, Q, which cannot be known by the same reasons
that P is known by; and that if Closure holds this leads to scepticism. However, Dretske argues that
we can rule out closure by acknowledging that relevant alternatives for P are distinct and separate
from those for Q. Thus closure fails and scepticism is avoided. Intuitively I find myself agreeing
with Dretske, but think that this intuition itself is part of the larger problem within epistemology.
Using ideas from Nagel et al, I contend that the analytic approach to the problems of closure and
knowledgeitself is potentially limited; that gaps between thought modes can explain cases of
apparent loss of knowledge as exposed by Dretske. Moreover, that if we want to further success
regarding problems within epistemology a new approach may be needed. I suggest we look toward
the rational sciences, and towards a form of experimental epistemology.
It s commonly thought and reasonable to expect that if we know that a given proposition is true,
that we can thereby deduce and know what is subsequent to it, its implications, are true also. If this
is the case, knowledge would appear to be closed under known entailment, otherwise known as the
Closure principle.
Closure Principle: if, while knowing P, S believes Q because S knows that P entails Q, then S
knows Q (Luper 2016).

Impact Of The Iron Curtain Speech
Winston Churchill s Speech The Iron Curtain and its impact on the Cold War.

Churchill then began by listing the threats of communism in Western Europe; he spoke of

He then makes a statement that now war can find any nation with the threat of communism.

Ancient Greek Art And Its Impact On Ancient Greece
Ancient Greek art has been one of the most influential art forms in the past centuries. The Keros
sculptures predominantly stand out while referring to the ancient Greek scluptures and art. The
Keros sculptures were carved purely out of marble and were a form of Cycladic art that was created
in a small island called Cycladesin 2600 2400 B.C. The Cycladic Islands of Greece are set in the
Aegean Sea. The ancient Greeks called these islands the kyklades, a scattered kyklos, or circle, of
islands around the holy island and sanctuary of Apollo, Delos.
The very first Keros sculpture was founded in the year 1963 by Lord Renfrew. The only unfortunate
event that occurred during excavation was that almost none of these Keros sculptures were found
in their complete form. Only fragments of these sculptures remained. It has been noticed, that all
through history, the Keros scultpures have been incrediblly difficult to analyze and interpret due to
lack of background information and it s obvious missing parts. An abudance of myths surround
these sculptures since Ancient Greece is also known for its devotion to Greek mythology. The
significance, use, and meaning of the figures are unclear. There is even debate about whether the
figures were meant to lie flat or to stand against a wall there is no definitive evidence either way.
Numerous explanations about the significance of the figurines have been proposed: the figurines

A questionnaire was constructed and tested on a sample population of 100. The results were
collected, analysed and compared against the actual marketing strategy of Levi s.
4. Marketing strategy.
During 1999 Levi s laid out strategies in order to turnaround their declining market share:
RESTORING THEIR FINANCIAL STRENGTH
REINVIGORATING BRANDS with innovative products
ENHANCEMENT OF RELATIONSHIPS with retail customers
ACHIEVING OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
UPGRADING PRODUCT PRESENTATION (placement) at retail
Levi s are continuing to pursue these strategies today, some are explicit for example Levi Type 1
jeans sit in lavish display heavily laded with their iconic advertisements. Other strategies are
internal, and implicit to the average consumer, such as the overall financial health of the company.

Culture Shock Essay
Everyone has had a culture shock in their lifetime. Culture shock does not only occur overseas
when traveling to another country to visit or to live, but it could also be in a new state or a new
city, at a new school or workplace, among new extended family members, or being in any new
environment. According to Condon and Yousef (2017), Culture Shock is a multifaceted
experience resulting from the stress associated with entering a new culture (Condon Yousef, 2017,
pg. 403). Everyone adapts in a different way to a new life and a new beginning, and it could be
hard at first before anyone can get use to it. I will explain the circumstances surrounding the new
culture and the reason for my trip/experience, the stages of culture shock present in my experience
of the new culture, how I coped with the culture shock, and how I might cope with the culture shock
in a healthier way in the future.
When I decided to move to Northern California; I was so excited because I have been to California
many times to visit my cousin before. I fell in love with the weather and the fact that there was
so much to see and do in California. I had a lot of great experience in California in meeting new
people from different countries, and I made friends when attending different functions with many
of my cousins that lived in the bay. I loved being in California and when I wanted to go to the
beach it didn t take long to drive there. The little short trips that I took to California to visit my

Persuasion Courtship Essay
Courtship and its effect on Characters in Persuasion
In Jane Austen s Persuasion, she examines life among the 19th century landholding elite in Britain,
and the proposition of marriage between several couples creates a dynamic social atmosphere.
Austen s novel centers around Anne Elliot, the unmarried daughter of a Baronet, however, there are
several auxiliary characters that play into the social atmosphere of courtship and marriage. These
characters give the reader an insider look into the complexities of courting during the period. The
experience of courtship develops the characters of Persuasion by putting them in hyper realistic
social settings for the time.

Musgrove! The high spirited, joyous talking Louisa Musgrove, and the dejected, thinking,

other. (Austen 156). Anne is in utter shock to hear that these unlikely lovers are set to marry
each other. During Anne s time in Lyme, she discovers that Benwick is a mature, well read man
who reads only poetry and Louisa is a foolish young girl who nearly killed herself by jumping off
of a seawall. The discovery of their engagement surprises Anne because she could not believe
that such an unlikely pair could be a good match. Later she says with a tone of realization, Louisa,
just recovering from illness, had been in an interesting state, and Captain Benwick was not
inconsolable. (Austen 156). The narrator insinuates that their engagement is a product of being
bored in a city with nothing to do. These two rely on each other almost entirely as Louisa heals
Benwick s emotional brokenness from the death of his late wife, while Benwick helps to heal
Louisa s injured body and mind. They are not necessarily a perfect match, but they fulfill each other

Glory Characters
The second character is the police lieutenant. He is the direct opponent of the priest in this novel.
He is a round character. He is a real character, who is thought to be based upon Tomas Garride
Canabal. He is a representative of the government. The nameless lieutenant is fervently anti clerical
and believes that the church preaches false promises to the people.
The lieutenant is described as having a very strong and resolute temperament. As a disciplined
man of principles, he is always sure of his decisions, he never hesitates and he has self respect. He
reveals the dangers of the cold idealism. So, he is associated with the power of the novel s title while
the priest is associated with the Glory .

Detailed Overview of HIV Essay
Since the onset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic 15 years ago, the virus has infected more than 47
million people in the world. With more than 2.2 million deaths in 1998, HIV/AIDS has now
become the fourth leading cause of mortality and its impact is going to increase. Over 95% of all
cases and 95% of AIDS deaths occur in the developing world, mostly among young adults and
increasingly in women.
HIV can be prevented in many ways, but they are not always followed. People die when they don
t play it safe. That s why we have to spread the word on prevention. There are three main ways that
HIV can be spread:
1. sexual intercourse
2. intravenous drugs

foreign cells, almost every cell has been built with certain identification tags, MHC markers. Those
cells carrying antigens, a ?non self? tag, are identified by the immune system. This helps insure that
the immune system does not accidentally try to harm the body.
Lymphocytes
Lymphocytes are white blood cells that patrol the body for non self tags. The number of these
particular cells in the average body is approximately 1 trillion. T cells and B cells make up the two
major categories of lymphocytes.
B cells
Originating from bone marrow, B cells are responsible for the creation of antibodies (see diagram
below). Each B cell creates an antibody, which is specific to an antigen. It is the antibodies that act
upon the non self entity by:
* marking the entity for destruction * directly destroying the foreign organism * blocking viruses
from entering a cell * making cells vulnerable to white blood cell attacks
T cells
T cells are produced in the thymus. Here they mature and learn how to identify foreign entities that
may enter the body. T lymphocytes can form into one of two major types of T cells: helper T cells
and cytotoxic T cells.
Activation of Helper T Cells:
An activated Helper T cell will do several things to contribute in the immune system reaction. They
alert B cells to produce antibodies and stimulate macrophages as well as other lymphocytes.
Activation of Helper T Cells:
Cytotoxic T cells,

Criminology
Criminology Coursework Assessing the riots... Criminology is focused on the attempt to
understand the meanings involved in social interaction. Theorists have tried to explain
sociological behaviour by looking at the patterns created by individuals that commit crime. The
August 2011 riots are pivotal in explaining criminological behaviour since official statistics show
that 865 individuals were put in prison by the 9th September 2011 for offences related to the
disorder between 6th and 9th August 2011. This is not to say that others were not involved, but
that they have simply not been identified to date and may never be identified, however the
evidence we do have about the recent riots gives us plenty to talk about. This essay will... Show

According to Becker deviance is a consequence of the application by others of rules and
sanctions to an offender . Becker came to the conclusion that people are criminalised through the
process of negotiation, known to be social constructionism for example the Crown Prosecution
Service may drop the charge of murder to manslaughter if there is not enough evidence to
convict for murder. By doing this the defendant becomes labelled for the crime of manslaughter
even though he may truly be guilty of murder. By introducing what could be regarded as petty
legislation more people will be labelled criminals, which in turn may lead the offender to act
further on this basis. Lemert referred to this as secondary deviance as when a person is labelled
criminal they change their view of themselves and this then becomes their master status . On the
other hand primary deviance is when someone violates a social code, but does not get labelled.
Therefore a person is only labelled a criminal if he is caught and since ethnic minorities are subject
to much more scrutiny than the white population this puts black people at an automatic
disadvantage. Following the inquiry into the death of Stephen Lawrence it was uncovered that the
police are institutionally racist. Institutional racism can be defined as the collective failure of an
organisation to provide an appropriate and professional service to the people

Evolution of the Xbox Supply Chain
2012
Evolution of the Xbox Supply Chain
1.) What supply chain changes did Microsoft make between the Xbox and the Xbox 360? What was
the motivation for these changes? When Microsoft first entered the market with the release of the
Xbox in 2001 it was a newcomer in the console business. The company had neither an established
brand presence in this area, nor did it have a developed base of games and gamers in the market,
such as Sony. Therefore, the primary purpose of introducing the Xbox was to establish Microsoft
in the market, to develop a brand presence, gain acceptance among gamers and to prepare the way
for future products. Therefore, Microsoft s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, when Microsoft started the development of its next generation console the Xbox 360 it
recognized the deficits and problems related to its initial strategy: the company was operating
under too high costs in order to assure high product availability which was not the critical factor
in this business. The nature of the console business is about providing the customer with a cheap
hardware and a variety of games, in order to generate profits from games sales. Additionally, the
first Xbox was released one year behind Sony s PS2, Microsoft s biggest competitor in the
market. This delay resulted in a substantial loss of sales and consequently reduced game sales.
Therefore, Microsoft learned that the Xbox 360 had to be launched ahead of Sony s PS3.
Accordingly, one relevant part of Microsoft s new strategy was the first to market approach.
Another essential change in Microsoft s business strategy concerned its cost structure in the Xbox
supply chain. Whereas the initial strategy focused heavily on reliability, Microsoft changed its
strategy to achieving reduced costs and increased profitability. Additionally, the company insisted
on owning the design of critical components, such as the microprocessor and the graphics chip, in
order to control its own destiny . Therefore, the supply chain network needed to be redesigned in
order to support Microsoft s strategic shift. So as to reach the desired cost

Lebron had five hall of famers on his team, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Ray Allen, Kyrie Irving,

MJ had to carry his team in the playoffs. Through his three Game 7s, Jordan averaged 33.7 points
(Favale). Lebron could not even compete with Michael Jordan s stats. Michael didn t have an
all star center or an all star point guard, so he was facilitating and rebounding the ball more for
his team. On the other hand, Lebron had an all star point guard when in Cleveland, Kyrie Irving.
Chris Bosh was an all star center when Lebron was in Miami. This goes to show if you have the
talent, then you won t need to rely on other players to achieve success. Michael Jordan said,
Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen (Jordan).
Jordan means that other people wait for greatness and rely on their teammates to make them
look better. Michael Jordan had no one to rely on but himself. Jordan is better than Lebron
because he worked hard and didn t depend on anyone else to make his own success for himself.
Generally speaking, Michael Jordan is an overall better player than Lebron James. Michael
Jordan shows a greater drive for success, a distinguished defense, and adaptability to his
teammates around him. Lebron James is not an awful player. He just does not have the skills
and mindset to be as great as Jordan. If you were going to rate these two players on a scale to one

My Music Concert
Today, I went to the symphony for the first time. Not much of a thrilling opener, huh? What if I
elaborated to say the closest I have ever gotten to a symphony was a grade four band concert, in
which my little brother played the saxophone (he quit the following year.) Maybe I could
compare this experience to all the DIY rock shows I attended back home in basements/back
rooms where the sounds could be loud enough to deafen people standing outside and the heat
could bring almost anyone to immediate sickness, but that seems a little crude. The bottom line
is, I have never been fortunate enough to encounter the amount or complexity of instruments as
I did at Willson Auditorium. Before continuing, I would like to express sincere gratitude toward
requiring, and thus allowing, me to attend this fantastic concert. I believe that I not only enjoyed
a wonderful performance but also appreciated music with knowledge and context. It is because
of said knowledge and context that the music sounded lifelike, and the connections between
instruments and literary ideas were formed for the first time. Upon arrival to the seats I was
surprised by the vastness of the venue, and the proximity of my seat to the stage (the row
directly ahead of me was front row.) When the musicians took stage, I was slightly disappointed
at my inability to see everyone, however, my view of the double basses was intriguing as I had not
realized how large they actually are (I had never seen one in real life prior.)

What is erosion?According to National Geographic erosion is the movement when Earth s layer

The Grand Canyon was just a land in northern Arizona until the Colorado River and erosion.
According to www.bobspixels.com erosion in this area is caused by wind and water since the
Colorado River. In colder months when it snows the melting snow and it expands making it go
deep into the cracks of the canyon causing it to break of and fall in the canyon making it bigger.
The pieces fall into the Colorado River and when there is a flash flood the rocks go away. All of
the rock comes from erosion and geologists think the continental drift had something to do with it.

The game has a simple pixel art style which works quite well as it is meant to resemble a game
that would be for the NES or SNES. The characters in battle are always in black and white with a
simple black background which as a design choice works quite well as it doesn t distract the player
from dodging the enemies attacks and makes sure there s no way they can mistake any background
element for an attack they must dodge.
The enemy designs in the game are very unique and interesting, often representing some kind of
character trope, for example there is an enemy in the game named Aaron that is a horse with a
mermaid s tail that is obsessed with his muscles. When Aaron attacks the player, the player must
move out of the way from 2 arms on the side of the box that come up from the bottom. Every
monster in the game has specialised attacks like this, for example there is an enemy that has an
obsession with cleaning and his attack is water droplets flowing out from the middle of the screen
that the player has to avoid. This is a good design decision as it adds depth and intrigue to the
characters in an extremely simple way which will make the player interested to see what other

in U.S history for men and women of all colors. Years of hatred and violence were now going to

fight the war back home against the U.S government, while Soldiers from all four racial groups

factor in eventually helping the allies win the war and back home the government noticed how
valuable this was. Racial tensions would eventually be less of a problem because the more time
white men spent with a racial group of people the more they felt at ease with racial integration.
The Native American Fighting Spirit Native Americans played a big role during World War II.
They either enlisted voluntarily or worked at the many war plants (The Role of Native

Some may not know however that it was founded as a Spanish colony in 1605; making it one of
the oldest cities in the United States to date(Carter). Realistically you d be hard pressed to find a
region of our country that hasn t in some way been influenced by Spanish settlers. And the effects
of this heavy colonization was even very apparent 200 years ago. By the mid 19th century even, it
is estimated that 100,000 people in the present day Southwestern region of America spoke Spanish.
So its fairly obvious that large populations of Spanish speakers in the US are nothing new and are
in fact what some would call, normal.
The states of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California, and Florida were all Spanish colonies at

that a price of $80 $100 per unit is considered to be optimal4. Despite this, research shows that
Biopure can adopt a customer based approach, or value based pricing111. In critical cases, vets
are willing to pay up to $150 per unit 80% of the time and pet owners are willing to pay up to

Compare And Contrast The New England Middle And Southern...
Introduction
The New England, Middle and Southern colonies were the part of the New World which used to
belong to the British. Although the colonies all had good things, all of the regions had things that
didnВґt help them grow as a region. Some colonies had rocky soil for example. Having a good
climate and a good topography is part of agriculture, having materials to work is part of
manufacturing. If no one has the right materials than the most probable thing to happen is that
people will not be as productive as with the right materials.
Industry
Each of the three regions had different types of industry. The New England colonies used to do
shipbuilding activities, lumbering and fishing. In England the Pilgrims built the Mayflower. That

The reason for the New England colonies to have a lot of Pilgrims was because who settled in
Massachusetts were the Pilgrims with the Mayflower ship. The Mayflower ship landed in
Massachusetts in December 21, 1921. In the Middle Colonies the people who settled where the
settlers from Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, France and Scotland. New Sweden and New
Netherlands joined and became Delaware, that junction was made by the Duke of York. The
Southern colonies were settled by the Puritans, the Puritans who settled in the Southern colonies
settled mostly for economic reasons. The Puritans usually would take African slaves for the
Southern Colonies.
When it was founded
The New England colonies where entirely founded when the Rhode Island was founded by
Roger Williams in 1636. The first New England colony to be founded was New Hampshire which
was founded by John Wheelwright. The Middle Colonies was totally founded when William Penn
founded Pennsylvania in 1682. The first colony from the Middle Colonies to be founded was Peter
Minuit in 1626. The Southern colonies were completely founded when Georgia was founded
byJames Olgethorpe in 1732. The first colony to be founded in the Southern Colonies was Virginia
which was founded in 1607 John Smith.

Face Negotiation Theory By Stella Ting Toomey
Face negotiation theory was developed by Stella Ting Toomey, a professor of Speech
Communication at California State University, Fullerton, who earned her Ph.D. from the
University of Washington in 1981. She developed the theory after being influenced by the work of
Goffman, and Brown and Levinson.
Ting Toomey (1988) states an assumption of face negotiation theory is that people in all cultures try
to maintain and negotiate face in all communication situations. Another assumption of the theory
described by Ting Toomey (1988) is that face is problematic in sensitive interpersonal situations,
such as conflict. According to Oetzel and Ting Toomey (2003), the theory is useful in explaining
both differences and similarities in face and facework during conflict situations. Many scholars
have researched specific areas regarding face negotiation theory. The areas mentioned below will
focus on the concept of face, conflict, and intercultural situations. The concept of face is important
in conflict situations because communicators should protect their own interests, and avoid
violating others interests during the interaction. Face has many different definitions, written by
many different scholars. Ting Toomey (1988) defines face as an individual s claimed sense of
positive image in the context of social interaction (Ting Toomey, 1988) . Another definition of
face is a claimed sense of favorable social self worth that a person wants others to have of her or
him (Ting Toomey

Ian Hodder
Another particular contribution of Ian Hodder to the development of archaeological thought can be
considered the development of reflexive archaeology and reflexive methods in archaeological
excavation. The details of what constitutes reflexive excavation methodology are based on
overcoming the gap between theory and practice by incorporating extensive interpretation during
excavation (Hodder 1997, 693). Hodder s viewpoint lies largely on a synthesis of critical
engagement in interpretations and theories while committing to the use of cutting edge methods in
scientific analysis. Emphasis is put on the idea that archaeological assumptions need to be reflexive,
relational or contextual, interactive and multivocal, all of which are factors incorporated into...

Throughout his works that focus on reflexivity, Hodder proposes that in the past decades, there
has been a growing discrepancy between theory and practice in archaeology and that new ideas
and approaches are needed to bridge this gap (Hodder, Karlsson Olsen 2008, 37). His approach
to excavation is therefore a result of trying to move the practical side of archaeology away from
the relatively positivist and objectivist stance that has been prominent in the past years, and
steering it towards the ideals proposed by the post processual movement (Hodder, Karlsson
Olsen 2008, 37). He achieves this not only by critical evaluation of himself and his methods, as
has been suggested by Salzman in his critique of reflexivity, but also by recording the thought
processes in the form of videos, diaries and interviews on site (Salzman 2002, 808). There has
been much discussion whether such approaches have been fruitful and brought any significant
addition to archaeology as a discipline (Hassan 1997, 1021; Yoffee 2003, 862; Chadwick

Johannes Kepler s Accomplishments
Johannes Kepler was born on December 27, 1571in Weil der Stadt, Germany and died on
November 15, 1630 in Resenburg, Germany due to his health. When Kepler was born in the late
16th century, scientists believed that planets in the solar system traveled in circular orbits around
the Earth. Kepler came from a modest family in a small German town. He began university
studies in 1598, where he grasped ideas of Copernicus s works and tutored in its complex details by
Maestlin. He experienced a moment of illumination while teaching a small class, struck him that the
spacing among the six Copernican planets might be explained circumscribing and inscribing each
orbit with one of the five regular polyhedrons.
Kepler was a German astronomer, mathematician, astrologists and a natural philosopher who
discovered three major laws of planetary motion: the plantes move in elliptical orbits with the sun at
one focus, area law and harmonic law. The area law is time necessary to traverse any arc of a
planetary orbit is proportional to the are of the sector between the central body and that arc. The
harmonic law is an exact relationship between the squares of the plantes periodic ... Show more

Religious intolerance sharpened and caused Kepler to get excommunicated in 1612, which caused
him great pain, he wasn t able to get the ban lifted. Keplers accomplishements included providing
a new and correct account of how vision occurs and developed a novel explanation for the
behavior of light in the newly invented telescope. De Stella Nova , Harmonies of the World , and
AstronomГa Nova were some of his works. De Stella Nova locates Keplers supernova in the foot
of the Ophiuchus constellation. Harmonics of the world discusses harmony and congruence in
geometrical forms and physical phenomena. Astronomia Nova focused on the orbit of mars and

Essay Armor of Ancient Rome
Armor of Ancient Rome Ancient Rome expended a great deal of economic resources and effort
upon conquest and expansion through military means. The role of armor was fundamental in this
expansion as it played a significant role in the success of the Roman armies on the battlefield. There
were three common requirements for armor construction throughout its history: The first was that
armor had to be flexible enough to allow the wearer freedom of movement; second, it also had to be
lightweight enough to be worn without tiring the wearer while providing protection against
opponents weapons; and third, armor had to be cost effective. These three aspects influenced the
evolution of Roman cuirass (lorica) design throughout Rome s... Show more content on

Further reorganization occurred after the civil war of A.D.69, when the victorious Flavian
dynasty dispersed disloyal units. As the Empire s expansion slowed, permanent borders were
established. Auxiliaries patrolled the borders and legionnaires were stationed within the frontiers
to act as a strategic reserve and intimidate potentially rebellious provinces. The army can be
divided into two distinct parts: the legion and the auxiliary ( auxilia), with a marked social
division existing between the two. Only Roman citizens could become legionnaires, while auxilia
were composed of non citizens recruited from Rome s client states and tribes. These legions were
supported by the non citizen auxilia consisting of infantry cohorts and cavalry (alae). A legion
consisted of around 5,000 men which were mostly heavy foot soldiers. However, it is only possible
to attempt a rough estimate of the men who constituted a legion. It has been estimated that the total
number of Roman troops, including legions and auxilia, numbered more than 300,000 during the
first century A.D. It has also been assumed that the legionary and auxiliary troops were equipped
differently. This notion is based on evidence from a single source, Trajan s column, which shows
clear distinctions between legionary and auxiliary equipment. The early view put forward by
historians such as Webster was that the equipment issued to legionnaires was remarkably uniform
throughout the

Naturally, just like in every society, a group of bandits were formed who called themselves the Toothless Company, led by the Menacing Soket. Green Grand Canyon University: ESL 533N Advanced Methodologies of Structured English Instruction December 12, 2012 Abstract Assessments are a critical tool in monitoring the progress of English language learners at all grade levels. The main purpose of assessments is to ensure students are receiving quality teaching instruction in accordance to academic and content standards. Even though these tests are not the only resource used for testing students, they provide teachers with invaluable data to determine if the student is growing in certain academic areas. There are several types of assessment that can be used to measure a student s progress. In this paper, various alternatives to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 2. Students are able to have directions repeated to them and have directions said in their native language (www.doe.state.la.us). There are not many advantages for English language learners whereas standardized testing is concerned. Teachers will have to create individualized ways in monitoring students progress to gain true assessment results. Part Two In an effort to gain useable and positive feedback from English language learners, teachers must use ongoing assessments. Whereas standardized tests only give information on students during a certain part of the year, ongoing assessments will allow teachers to monitor students progress throughout the year. Informal assessments are very beneficial in monitoring the progress of students. One type of informal assessment is the use of role playing. During role playing, students are given opportunities to speak in English dealing with different situations. This assessment will let the teacher observe how well the student is comprehends the scenarios and how they respond to them. This type of assessment is effective because it allows students to put the English language into use increasing their English ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Stereotypes In Death Knocks By Woody Allen Characters play the most important role in a story, poem, or play. They move along the plot to keep everything interesting, and of course nothing would happen if there were no characters. In the play Death Knocks by Woody Allen, the readers are presented with two silly characters who give a twist on their stereotypes. In the play there is a 57 year old man by the name of Nat and the personified Death. Death has come to take Nat away, but the events turn and things do not go as planned, and Nat ends up getting an extra day. This happens because Death is clumsy and unsure of himself unlike the terrifying monster that he is usually portrayed as. Death is characterized unusually compared to the normal portrayal of Death because in the play Death... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first of these characteristics is human weaknesses. As soon as the play starts the readers see that Death is not shown the way he is normally seen. Death climbs up the drainpipe on the side of Nat s house and enters through the windowsill. When Death gets inside he comments I nearly broke my neck. I m shaking like a leaf (1067). With a normal characterization of Death, he is immortal and unable to be injured, but in this play he is injured many times. Death says that he is liable to get gangrene yet, but that of course would not happen if death were characterized stereotypically (1068). While playing gin rummy Death calls Nat the wrong name and blames it on a headache. The readers cannot be sure whether this is a lie to cover up his inability to remember the name of his first job or if his head actually does hurt. Either way, this human weakness is not characteristic of the common portrayal of Death. In the final part of the play when death is leaving he falls down the stairs which shows how clumsy he is. This action is unusual because when one usually thinks about Death, he is graceful and terrifying, not clumsy and goofy. Throughout the play Death is characterized in such an unusual way through Allen giving him human weaknesses that are not usually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Latin Music Thesis Growing up in Arizona where the Hispanic culture is so vibrant and plentiful, I have spent much time surrounded by the rich music of their people, and have had that ingrained into my mind as what Latin music is since I was a child. That same sentiment can be shared by much of the west coast, yet if one were to ask someone on the east coast or Midwest what Latin music is, their answers will all differ. This is because Latin music is not one dimensional, nor is it only in reference to the Spanish influences to said music, but in actuality encompasses the entire Latin experience and accounts for many geographical locations and differences. The Latin music genre has grown and adapted to how society has changed overtime to include newer subcultures of music within the genre itself in order to produce never before seen fusions and styles that lead the way for ground breaking movements. Conclusions The case of Liebeck v. McDonald s clearly illustrates that companies must be mindful of not harming consumers through defective provides, because consumers that are harmed by products, have the ability to successfully win awards to be compensated for damages. With that in mind, it is recommended that Divine Coffee Shops reduce coffee temperatures. According to the Burn Foundation (2016), to eliminate the risk of burns, hot liquids should not be served beyond 160 degrees. The full article published by the Burn Foundation can be found here: http:/ /www.burnfoundation.org/programs/resource.cfm?c=1 a=3. To ensure that our customers are protected, we must implement a policy of checking the temperature of the coffee, before serving customers. The case of Liebeck v. • 7. Genetic Disease Is An Autosomal Dominant Neurodegenerative... Genetic diseases are diseases that are passed on from parents to their offspring. An example of a genetic disease which can be inherited is Huntington Disease. Huntington Disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder with midlife onset characterised by psychiatric, cognitive and motor symptoms (G. Vonsattel and DiFiglia, 1998). The statistics for HD blah blah blah Like all genetic diseases, huntington s disease has a specific inheritance pattern. Huntington disease is an autosomal disease this means that the defective gene does not occur on one of the sex chromosomes but instead it occurs on one of the other 22 chromosomes (known as autosomes). It is a also a dominant disorder so therefore only one copy of the altered gene, passed on from a parent who has it, is necessary to cause their offspring to inherit the disease. If one of the parents has the defective gene their offspring will have a 50/50 chance of inheriting that gene. (See Figure 1). If the offspring inherits the gene it is guaranteed that they will develop Huntington s disease at some point in their life time, the disease does not skip generations. The defective gene is not present on either of the sex chromosomes resulting in the disease being independent of gender. This means that male and female offspring will have an equal risk of inheriting the disease. The faulty gene (the HD gene) that is to blame for the development of huntington s disease is located on chromosome 4 (See Figure 2), it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Choi summarized the science behind the laser treatments: Lasers treat acne in two possible ways. At certain wavelengths or colors lasers go into the skin tissue and generate oxygen radicals, which kill the bacteria and reduce inflammation. At other wavelengths, lasers are basically heat sources that reduce sebum [an oily substance produced by certain skin glands] production by killing and reducing the number of sebaceous glands. This decreases the likelihood that excess sebum clogs pores, which can lead to acne. 2 This document is authorized for use only by Rachel van Munster in Entrepreneurial Law and Finance taught by Rafael P. • 9. A Survey Report On Malaysian Diaspora Introduction To better understand what media sources the Singaporean diaspora uses to find out about news back home in Singapore, I conducted a survey amongst Singaporeans based overseas, namely in places such as Australia, the United States, some countries in South East Asia and also in Europe. The demographics used were age based, dispersed mainly among working class adults and university students. The survey resulted in a 40% readership of www.straitstimes.com, the online version of Singapore s leading newspaper The Straits Times and a 27% readership of another website, which is also a subsidiary of the Straits Times, called Stomp. Going from these numbers, one can say that the bulk of Singaporeans overseas still rely heavily on the online version of The Straits Times for news back home in Singapore. From here, I can conclude that the key media outlet utilised by Singaporeans overseas would be the StraitsTimes.com. My survey also includes the purposes of these sites, namely what Singaporeans use these sites for and how much whether or not they consider these sources to be relevant. In this essay, I intend to analyse the The Straits Times and its online counterpart, www.straitstimes.com , as well as its other subsidiary STOMP (Straits Times Online Mobile Print). Given the premise that www.straitstimes.com is reflective of its parent, The Straits Times, it is imperative that we analyse The Straits Times as a whole, taking into consideration that in the end the popular media ... What Is Candide A Satire Naivete and Satire in Jonathan Swifts Gulliver s Travels and Voltaire s Candide A child has the ability to make the most critical and objective observation on society and the behavior of man. How is this possible? A child has yet to mature and lacks proper education and experience. However, it is for this very reason that a child would make the perfect social scientist; his or her naivete may provide an excellent means of objective criticism and most often satire. This allows the authors to satirize many aspects of society. These two satirical works make litotes of preposterous situations, thus shedding light on the absurdity at hand. This is an especially effective technique, because a character or narrator is involved in a ridiculous situation. The reader, from an aesthetic distance, is then able to recognize the foolishness of the incident. After careful consideration, a satirical conclusion may be drawn. For example, Voltaire s narrator describes a brutal battle scene in a lighthearted manner: Nothing could have been more splendid, brilliant, smart or orderly than the two armies . . . . then rifle fire removed from our best of worlds about nine or ten thousand scoundrels who had been infesting its surface. The bayonet was also the sufficient reason for the death of several thousand men. (22 23) The diction in this passage is ironic. By referring to a battle as splendid (22) and brilliant (22), the narrator demonstrates how common the idea of warfare has become and how little the human life is valued. Also, the phrase, Our best of worlds (22 23) identifies optimism as a focus of this satirical attack (Maurois 100). In this way, the narrator nonchalantly discusses grave matters. Maurois cited both Voltaire and Swift as using this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Path Analysis Paper Main analyses involved running each of three models through AMOS SEM software separately, using path analysis techniques to assess direct and indirect effects, among the present observed variables (Arbuckle, 2013). Path analysis, which is based on multiple regressions, examines the relationship between exogenous (i.e., variablenot causes by another variable, but effects one or more variablesin model) and endogenous variables (i.e., a variable that is caused or effected by one or more variables in a model; Iacobucci, 2010). Path models examine the total effects, as well as the direct and indirect of effects of variables in a single model, simultaneously (Peterson et al., 2014). Structural equation modeling path analysis techniques are superior to standard regression analyses in that they: 1) provide more accurate estimates of the effects of hypothesized variables; 2) estimate all effects simultaneously; 3) allow for greater accuracy of parameter estimates when examining competing models; and 4) allow the researcher to compare effects of multiple mediators (Zhao, Lynch, Chen, 2010). • 15. The Design of a Uniform Pore Structure Is Favorable to... The isotherms of three samples investigated by the nitrogen adsorption/desorption were shown in Figure 2. The curves of all three samples show hysteresis behavior and belong to type IV isotherms31. It suggests that our samples exhibit mesoporous structure with pore sizes larger than 5.6 nm (Table 2). The pore diameter of thiol functionalized SBA 15 calculated by the BJH theory is smaller than that of SBA 15, which is attributed to the anchoring of thiol moiety to the silanol group in the interior wall of SBA 1540. The decrease of pore size, while maintaining type IV isotherm characteristics in thiol functionalized SBA 15, is one possible reason that thiol moieties are located along the interior pore channels of SBA 15, not in the internal framework of SBA 15. The further decrease of pore size in Bi thiol functionalized SBA 15 can be explained by the attachment of bismuth to the thiol group, narrowing the inner pore channel of SBA 15. The BET surface areas of SBA 15, thiol functionalized SBA 15, and Bi thiol functionalized SBA 15 are 847, 512, and 347 m2/g, respectively. The pore volumes of those are 1.03, 0.85, and 0.62 cm3/g, respectively (shown in Table 2). The gradual decrease of the surface area and pore volume can also be understood in the attachment of thiol group to the inner wall of SBA 15 or bismuth to the thiol group as discussed above. • 17. Problems Within Epistemology A New Approach Essay Fred Dretske (2005) rejects the claim that closure holds over known entailment. Dretske argues that propositions, P, have heavyweight implications, Q, which cannot be known by the same reasons that P is known by; and that if Closure holds this leads to scepticism. However, Dretske argues that we can rule out closure by acknowledging that relevant alternatives for P are distinct and separate from those for Q. Thus closure fails and scepticism is avoided. Intuitively I find myself agreeing with Dretske, but think that this intuition itself is part of the larger problem within epistemology. Using ideas from Nagel et al, I contend that the analytic approach to the problems of closure and knowledgeitself is potentially limited; that gaps between thought modes can explain cases of apparent loss of knowledge as exposed by Dretske. Moreover, that if we want to further success regarding problems within epistemology a new approach may be needed. I suggest we look toward the rational sciences, and towards a form of experimental epistemology. It s commonly thought and reasonable to expect that if we know that a given proposition is true, that we can thereby deduce and know what is subsequent to it, its implications, are true also. If this is the case, knowledge would appear to be closed under known entailment, otherwise known as the Closure principle. The Keros sculptures were carved purely out of marble and were a form of Cycladic art that was created in a small island called Cycladesin 2600 2400 B.C. The Cycladic Islands of Greece are set in the Aegean Sea. The ancient Greeks called these islands the kyklades, a scattered kyklos, or circle, of islands around the holy island and sanctuary of Apollo, Delos. The very first Keros sculpture was founded in the year 1963 by Lord Renfrew. The only unfortunate event that occurred during excavation was that almost none of these Keros sculptures were found in their complete form. Only fragments of these sculptures remained. Culture shock does not only occur overseas when traveling to another country to visit or to live, but it could also be in a new state or a new city, at a new school or workplace, among new extended family members, or being in any new environment. According to Condon and Yousef (2017), Culture Shock is a multifaceted experience resulting from the stress associated with entering a new culture (Condon Yousef, 2017, pg. 403). Everyone adapts in a different way to a new life and a new beginning, and it could be hard at first before anyone can get use to it. I will explain the circumstances surrounding the new culture and the reason for my trip/experience, the stages of culture shock present in my experience of the new culture, how I coped with the culture shock, and how I might cope with the culture shock in a healthier way in the future. When I decided to move to Northern California; I was so excited because I have been to California many times to visit my cousin before. I fell in love with the weather and the fact that there was so much to see and do in California. I had a lot of great experience in California in meeting new people from different countries, and I made friends when attending different functions with many of my cousins that lived in the bay. Persuasion Courtship Essay Courtship and its effect on Characters in Persuasion In Jane Austen s Persuasion, she examines life among the 19th century landholding elite in Britain, and the proposition of marriage between several couples creates a dynamic social atmosphere. Austen s novel centers around Anne Elliot, the unmarried daughter of a Baronet, however, there are several auxiliary characters that play into the social atmosphere of courtship and marriage. These characters give the reader an insider look into the complexities of courting during the period. The high spirited, joyous talking Louisa Musgrove, and the dejected, thinking, feeling, reading, Captain Benwick, seemed each of them everything that would not suit the other. (Austen 156). Anne is in utter shock to hear that these unlikely lovers are set to marry each other. During Anne s time in Lyme, she discovers that Benwick is a mature, well read man who reads only poetry and Louisa is a foolish young girl who nearly killed herself by jumping off of a seawall. The discovery of their engagement surprises Anne because she could not believe that such an unlikely pair could be a good match. Later she says with a tone of realization, Louisa, just recovering from illness, had been in an interesting state, and Captain Benwick was not inconsolable. (Austen 156). The narrator insinuates that their engagement is a product of being bored in a city with nothing to do. Theorists have tried to explain sociological behaviour by looking at the patterns created by individuals that commit crime. The August 2011 riots are pivotal in explaining criminological behaviour since official statistics show that 865 individuals were put in prison by the 9th September 2011 for offences related to the disorder between 6th and 9th August 2011. Becker came to the conclusion that people are criminalised through the process of negotiation, known to be social constructionism for example the Crown Prosecution Service may drop the charge of murder to manslaughter if there is not enough evidence to convict for murder. By doing this the defendant becomes labelled for the crime of manslaughter even though he may truly be guilty of murder. By introducing what could be regarded as petty legislation more people will be labelled criminals, which in turn may lead the offender to act further on this basis. Lemert referred to this as secondary deviance as when a person is labelled criminal they change their view of themselves and this then becomes their master status . On the other hand primary deviance is when someone violates a social code, but does not get labelled. Therefore a person is only labelled a criminal if he is caught and since ethnic minorities are subject to much more scrutiny than the white population this puts black people at an automatic disadvantage. What supply chain changes did Microsoft make between the Xbox and the Xbox 360? What was the motivation for these changes? When Microsoft first entered the market with the release of the Xbox in 2001 it was a newcomer in the console business. The company had neither an established brand presence in this area, nor did it have a developed base of games and gamers in the market, such as Sony. The nature of the console business is about providing the customer with a cheap hardware and a variety of games, in order to generate profits from games sales. Additionally, the first Xbox was released one year behind Sony s PS2, Microsoft s biggest competitor in the market. This delay resulted in a substantial loss of sales and consequently reduced game sales. Therefore, Microsoft learned that the Xbox 360 had to be launched ahead of Sony s PS3. Accordingly, one relevant part of Microsoft s new strategy was the first to market approach. Another essential change in Microsoft s business strategy concerned its cost structure in the Xbox supply chain. Whereas the initial strategy focused heavily on reliability, Microsoft changed its strategy to achieving reduced costs and increased profitability. Additionally, the company insisted on owning the design of critical components, such as the microprocessor and the graphics chip, in order to control its own destiny . • 43. Face Negotiation Theory By Stella Ting Toomey Face negotiation theory was developed by Stella Ting Toomey, a professor of Speech Communication at California State University, Fullerton, who earned her Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1981. She developed the theory after being influenced by the work of Goffman, and Brown and Levinson. Ting Toomey (1988) states an assumption of face negotiation theory is that people in all cultures try to maintain and negotiate face in all communication situations. Another assumption of the theory described by Ting Toomey (1988) is that face is problematic in sensitive interpersonal situations, such as conflict. According to Oetzel and Ting Toomey (2003), the theory is useful in explaining both differences and similarities in face and facework during conflict situations. Many scholars have researched specific areas regarding face negotiation theory. The areas mentioned below will focus on the concept of face, conflict, and intercultural situations. The concept of face is important in conflict situations because communicators should protect their own interests, and avoid violating others interests during the interaction. Face has many different definitions, written by many different scholars. Ting Toomey (1988) defines face as an individual s claimed sense of positive image in the context of social interaction (Ting Toomey, 1988) . Another definition of face is a claimed sense of favorable social self worth that a person wants others to have of her or him (Ting Toomey ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Ian Hodder Another particular contribution of Ian Hodder to the development of archaeological thought can be considered the development of reflexive archaeology and reflexive methods in archaeological excavation. The details of what constitutes reflexive excavation methodology are based on overcoming the gap between theory and practice by incorporating extensive interpretation during excavation (Hodder 1997, 693). Hodder s viewpoint lies largely on a synthesis of critical engagement in interpretations and theories while committing to the use of cutting edge methods in scientific analysis. Emphasis is put on the idea that archaeological assumptions need to be reflexive, relational or contextual, interactive and multivocal, all of which are factors incorporated into... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout his works that focus on reflexivity, Hodder proposes that in the past decades, there has been a growing discrepancy between theory and practice in archaeology and that new ideas and approaches are needed to bridge this gap (Hodder, Karlsson Olsen 2008, 37). His approach to excavation is therefore a result of trying to move the practical side of archaeology away from the relatively positivist and objectivist stance that has been prominent in the past years, and steering it towards the ideals proposed by the post processual movement (Hodder, Karlsson Olsen 2008, 37). He achieves this not only by critical evaluation of himself and his methods, as has been suggested by Salzman in his critique of reflexivity, but also by recording the thought processes in the form of videos, diaries and interviews on site (Salzman 2002, 808). There has been much discussion whether such approaches have been fruitful and brought any significant addition to archaeology as a discipline (Hassan 1997, 1021; Yoffee 2003, 862; Chadwick ... • 46. Johannes Kepler s Accomplishments Johannes Kepler was born on December 27, 1571in Weil der Stadt, Germany and died on November 15, 1630 in Resenburg, Germany due to his health. When Kepler was born in the late 16th century, scientists believed that planets in the solar system traveled in circular orbits around the Earth. Kepler came from a modest family in a small German town. He began university studies in 1598, where he grasped ideas of Copernicus s works and tutored in its complex details by Maestlin. He experienced a moment of illumination while teaching a small class, struck him that the spacing among the six Copernican planets might be explained circumscribing and inscribing each orbit with one of the five regular polyhedrons. Kepler was a German astronomer, mathematician, astrologists and a natural philosopher who discovered three major laws of planetary motion: the plantes move in elliptical orbits with the sun at one focus, area law and harmonic law. The area law is time necessary to traverse any arc of a planetary orbit is proportional to the are of the sector between the central body and that arc. The harmonic law is an exact relationship between the squares of the plantes periodic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 47. Essay Armor of Ancient Rome Armor of Ancient Rome Ancient Rome expended a great deal of economic resources and effort upon conquest and expansion through military means. The role of armor was fundamental in this expansion as it played a significant role in the success of the Roman armies on the battlefield. There were three common requirements for armor construction throughout its history: The first was that armor had to be flexible enough to allow the wearer freedom of movement; second, it also had to be lightweight enough to be worn without tiring the wearer while providing protection against opponents weapons; and third, armor had to be cost effective. These three aspects influenced the evolution of Roman cuirass (lorica) design throughout Rome s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Further reorganization occurred after the civil war of A.D.69, when the victorious Flavian dynasty dispersed disloyal units. As the Empire s expansion slowed, permanent borders were established. Auxiliaries patrolled the borders and legionnaires were stationed within the frontiers to act as a strategic reserve and intimidate potentially rebellious provinces. The army can be divided into two distinct parts: the legion and the auxiliary ( auxilia), with a marked social division existing between the two. Only Roman citizens could become legionnaires, while auxilia were composed of non citizens recruited from Rome s client states and tribes. These legions were supported by the non citizen auxilia consisting of infantry cohorts and cavalry (alae). A legion consisted of around 5,000 men which were mostly heavy foot soldiers. However, it is only possible to attempt a rough estimate of the men who constituted a legion. It has been estimated that the total number of Roman troops, including legions and auxilia, numbered more than 300,000 during the first century A.D. It has also been assumed that the legionary and auxiliary troops were equipped differently. This notion is based on evidence from a single source, Trajan s column, which shows clear distinctions between legionary and auxiliary equipment. The early view put forward by historians such as Webster was that the equipment issued to legionnaires was remarkably uniform throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
