Humanitarian Design Summit Research Paper
Humanitarian Design Summit, January 2016 [10th July 24th July]
Engineers without Borders (EWB)
Engineers without borders is a social enterprise working for the betterment of the community using
engineering.
According to the EWB Annual Report (2015), EWB Australia is a member based, community
organisation with over 13 years of experience creating social value through engineering. We engineer
people out of poverty by providing access to clean water and sanitation, clean energy, housing, and
digital tools. Founded by local engineers in 2003, we now have 2,000 highly engaged and active
members and 15,000 supporters across Australia. We connect, educate and empower people through
humanitarian engineering. Humanitarian engineering uses a people ... Show more content on

The Design Summit will walk you through the Human Centred Design process in stages. The first few
days are your chances to discover how the process works, learn about the development context and
generally build the foundations of your knowledge base. We will then define a design challenge, and
travel to the communities to begin the Empathise phase.
In Empathise, you will spend some time in a local community learning about their life, jobs, values,
skills and challenges. This is your biggest research opportunity so be sure to make the most of it. Here
you will begin the Ideate phase, sharing ideas and brainstorming to design new products, services or
processes to support your community. On the final day we will leave the community and travel to
location where you can obtain the materials required to begin prototyping.
This process is not linear. You will reiterate many times through Empathise, Ideate and Prototype
stages whilst in the communities, and again once we move on. Each time your design will improve
and you will learn some useful lessons about HCD along the way. You are expected to fail. In fact, the
more you fail, the better your final product will

Character Analysis Of Everyman
Everyman, a morality play, was written in the late fifteenth century with the intention of
communicating to both educated, as well as, illiterate audiences some of the moral instructions
regarding the way to live life and prepare for judgment day. Liberty University (Lesson 26
presentation) says, This play taught masses of people about Christ and what constitutes a God
centered moral life. (Liberty University. n.d.) The use of characters such as; Death, Goods, Beauty,
Knowledge, Good deeds, and of course, Everyman, create a realistic understanding of the moral
message. The treatment and perception of the character Death within the play gives the audients
important insight to the way death is used by God and how it changes the outlook ... Show more

As each character betrays their promises to never leave or forsake Everyman, the reader can make a
personal connection that supports their understanding that the only way to salvation is through Christ;
not through the characters of the play such as Goods or Fellowship. All of the characters can be taken
literally to understand their nature in the real world. Death, as a character, is used as an analogy or
allegory for literal death. The author is demonstrating the use of Death to bring people back to God.
As Everyman continued in his search to find someone willing to accompany him to his reckoning he
comes across Good Deeds. Although the character, Good Deeds, was willing to accompany
Everyman, he is initially unable to so because of the fact that Good Deeds was never Everyman s
primary focus so he was lacking strength in that area. That being said, Good Deeds points Everyman
in the direction of his sister, Knowledge, who encourages him to seek Confession. By speaking with
Confession, he seeks forgiveness while also punishing himself by way of scourge of penance.
Everyman is then forgiven of his sins and Good Deeds rises from the ground strong enough to
accompany him to his final judgment. In this situation, God uses Death to free people of their sin and
bring them to salvation. Prior to being comforted by Good Deeds, Everyman was overwhelmed by
fear and anxiety. He was alone

How Did Norse Mythology Affect The Viking Way
Thor, Odin, and Loki, all good marvel characters, but they didn t originate in the minds of Stan Lee. In
fact they originated nearly 1300 years earlier, in the Viking age. In that time Norse mythology was
born in its entirety. The way it was shaped was an effect of the Viking way, and the Viking way was
affected by their mythology. Norse mythology didn t stay inclusive to their own gods because of their
raids and trading they learned different religions. Norse mythology integrated another mythology into
theirs. This in turn cause wars between those said gods, specific to this essay the Aesir Vanir War. This
affected how Vikings saw the use of Seidr and this event was directly related to them raiding and
trading with other lands.

The Wright Brothers And The First Flight
n Dr. Amentrout s lecture he discussed the process of scientific discovery, using the Wright Brothers
and their journey to the first flight . Along, with the Wright Brothers, he used four other aeronautics
pioneers. Dr. Amentorut described the process in five simple steps: 1. Go with your passion 2. Be
willing 3. Learn what has been done before 4. Let the ideas flow 5. Don t give up when the
unexpected happens. The Wright brothers spark for aviation began in 1878, Wilbur, the oldest at
eleven years old and Orville, seven, when their father gave them a toy helicopter. It sparked them to
take it apart and remake it better than it was before they took it apart. Like many other successful
people, but not all, the Wright brothers did not go to college. Even though Wilbur was accepted into
Yale, he decided not to go because he had his teeth knocked out a few weeks prior. This was his set
back, being that he really wanted to go. Despite this setback, in 1892, Wilbur started his bicycle
business, manufacturing and producing bikes. He designed and hand made them himself. He went
with his passion that he found at the age of eleven, creating and designing. Wilbur Wright was also
willing to try something different, and go a different route. When the Wright brothers decided to aim
for the first flight, flight in general, they looked back at previous work of those before them.
Conclusions made from literature about the problem of mechanics and human flight states, that

Overcoming My Obstacles
Throughout life, many individuals encounter things in their life that they find difficult to overcome.
Many of which overcome such obstacles quickly, while others fail to overcome them at all or at least it
takes them a much longer time to do so. I fall into the third type of individual.
The obstacle that I had to face deal with my disability in the sense of people undermining my
capabilities. I was born with a disability called myelomeningocele. For those who don t know what
this is, myelomeningocele is basically a type of spina bifida that is a defect of the spine and spinal
cord where the spinal canal and the backbone is not closed before delivering a baby. In my case, the
defect wasn t as severe compared to others who have the same disorder. Most individuals who are
born with the same disability, they are to have a wheelchair to get around because they are fully
paralyzed from their waist on down. With me, I have to get around using crutches being that mine case

were some instances where some people, including teachers, thought that I broke my legs so I had to
explain to them that I was born with a disability. Other than that, the friends that I ve made while
being in college has gotten to know me rather than look at me differently because of my disability and
sometimes they would forget that I even have a disability, which I love because I am not seen as an
outcast to them and it shows that there a people in this world who would look beyond a person s

Sense Of Belonging In Romulus, My Father
The sense of belonging is affected by various different factors such as understanding, past
experiences, choices, culture, relationships, and many more. Due to these factors, it can be harder for
some people to overcome the barriers of belonging. This movie Romulus, My Father demonstrates
how belonging can be difficult for numerous people, whilst it shows how other people find it
somewhat easier to belong. This movie is partly centred on the concept of affiliation, and also the
concept of exclusion through a range of various themes and some techniques. These include: migrant
experiences, sense of place, lack of understanding, and several others. A major theme is the need to
use compassion at all time, which includes making effort to truly

Differentiation as a Strategy to Reach English Language...
Review of Literature Every student has their own story, set of experiences, and abilities. Overtime,
teachers have quickly realized that they cannot reach all students with a one size fits all approach to
instruction. Therefore, the goal of a differentiated classroom is to maximize growth and individual
success of each student by providing different avenues for the students to learn the content, to process
the information and ideas, and to create a final product. Differentiating instruction needs to be a daily
component of my planning and teaching. Some of students need to be challenged with opportunities to
expand their mind with advanced learning activities. Other students need extra scaffolding and support
in order to understand the basic concepts of the course. Differentiation can be an extremely effective
instruction strategy for teachers as they work to meet the needs of English Language Learners.
Chamot O Malley (1994) explored how differentiation can best be used when instructing ELL s. They
examined direct language instruction, culturally inclusive environments, and differentiation. When
differentiating or modifying instruction teachers it is helpful if teachers activate or build background
knowledge, provide scaffolding, include authentic experiences, and simplify language. Regardless of
the subject area, teachers need to take a unified stance in regards to identifying and working to support
a student s language needs. Establishing a

U.s. Securities And Exchange Commission
In today s world, debates over wages and compensation have been a growing topic of concern. Many
people feel that they are entitled to earn more than they currently are. The comparison of executive
wages and worker wages has created a backlash from the American public due to the extreme
differences in pay. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission adopted the mandate by the Dodd
Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act that requires public companies to release their
chief executive officers pay in relationship to the median compensation of its employees (U.S.
Securities and Exchange Commission). Although this regulation does not take effect until the 2017

In my analysis, I will draw conclusions from scholarly sources and news articles, as well as look at
both sides of the matter from different philosopher s points of view. I will conclude by recommending
what I think should happen and look to the future of both scenarios. In order to examine the effects of
excessive CEO pay on the company s stakeholders, one must define the two terms. Russell S.
Whelton, a former graduate student at Saginaw Valley State University, defines excessive pay as,
compensation that is 20% or greater than the national average CEO salary (Whelton 15). Therefore,
excessive pay would constitute compensation over $13.8 million per year (Chamberlain). A
stakeholder is anyone who is directly affected by the performance of an organization and thereby,
holds a stake in that company (Schermerhorn 73). Some examples of stakeholders are directors,
shareholders, executive officers, and all employees. It is important to understand why executive
officers are compensated at the high levels they are today to determine the benefits and disadvantages
of the argument. The purpose of compensation at any higher level is to attempt to ensure that
management actions result in successful performance for the firm (Ashley and Yang 369). Possible
excessive compensation can be a result

The E Commerce Industry
Introduction With a steady increase of time, effort, and money being poured into digital marketing
over the past few years, one can only wonder what this means for the future of online exchange, or E
commerce. It is said that by 2016, the web will impact purchase decisions of sales totaling $2 trillion.
This is over half of all retail transactions (van Bommel et.al.). Digital strategy is no longer something
that can be overlooked, an extra tool for a company to take advantage of if they have the time, it is a
key marketing driver in our technologically dependent society. The E commerce industry as a whole
has only been possible since commercial internet use came about in 1991. Meaning, this is a young
industry which has seen rapid growth in such a short period of time. Because of this, there is a big
push to see how the purchase decision is impacted by the rise of E commerce. However, because this
is a young industry, there is much marketers still do not know about the online purchase decision
made by consumers. What does the future of e commerce look like? What do marketers need to know
in the creation and implementation of digital strategy? Where are the gaps in our current knowledge?
This is where my research begins.
Literature Review My research began with reading current postings, articles, and studies looking at all
different topics within the E commerce industry. After thorough analysis of these pieces of literature, I
was able to break my research down into three

3. How do you think the principle of uniformitarianism accounts for occasional catastrophic events
such as meteorite impacts, huge volcanic eruptions or great earthquakes?
Uniformitarianism is a scientific clarification on how the rocks, continents and mountains in the planet
are created. The material process that occurs on earth has not changed; although the objective
conditions have changed radically the principle of uniformitarianism accounts for the outcome of the
catastrophe or natural calamity.

4. Choose one of the geological periods listed in figure 3.8 and find out all you can about it. How are
rock formations from that period identified? What are its most characteristic fossils? Where are the
best samples of rock from your chosen period?
I chose the Jurassic period; because this time enclosed mainly marine deposits such as shale,
sandstone and limestone. There were a diversity of fossils found from this period which was only
found west of the Mississippi River.
5. Do some research to determine the ages of the oldest known fossils. What kind of life forms were
they?
The oldest fossil was the microfossils known to be found in Australia by a group from the University
of Western Australia and Oxford University. The tiny fossils showed credible indication for cells and
bacteria living in an oxygen free world over 3.4 billion years ago.

they are almost twins. Why did these planets evolved so differently? Why is earth s atmosphere rich in
oxygen and poor in carbon dioxide, whereas the reverse is true for Venus? What would happen to the
Earth s oceans if earth were a little bit closer to the sun?
These planets evolved so differently, because of their space from the sun. Making Venus hotter than

Hillbilly Elegy Memoir
Memoir Essay Memoirs, and writing in general, reveal a truth about the author. Oftentimes, said truth
is revealed intentionally. Universal truths such as struggle, endurance, and agony help authors
influence their audiences. These truths cause the readers to become cognizant of and appreciate the
authors. It is a writer s duty to write from the heart to write about the good and bad sides of a story.
Annie Dillard s An American Childhood fails to use universal truths and instead presents a very
superficial presentation of its author s life. J. D. Vance s Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and
Culture in Crisis display the unconventional upbringing of Vance in order to give the audience a better
understanding of the writer. Pure honesty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her mother often lectured against conformity, but Dillard fails to analyze or fully understand them:
Torpid conformity was a kind of sin; it was stupidity itself, the mighty stream against which Mother
would never cease to struggle (Dillard 116). Dillard simply states her mother s opinion, without any
personal input. With only shallow writing, the audience is unable to connect with the author and her
meaning. Some may argue that her use of logic allows the audience to comprehend her values;
however, the audience s comprehension from logic is extremely shallow compared to an
understanding based on feeling. While the reader may understand why one may have certain values,
he or she will not fully grasp how those values affect one s actions or why those values have such an
impact on one s life. Mamaw showed her values and influenced Vance through non verbal honesty.
Her sacrifice spoke for her, unlike Dillard s description of her mother. One author shows how effective
people in his life were by presenting honest examples that do not necessarily portray him in a positive
light while the author presents simple, superficial examples and fails to connect with her audience.
Honesty in Hillbilly Elegy helps the author present his message. Vance portrays his message of the
deterioration of the white working class through all of the experiences he

ideas of government, and how people should be governed. Lao tzu was born in the Chinese state of Ch

To avoid such a catastrophe he must come across as a miser. Eventually he will prove he is not as
greedy as eh was thought to be. Once this is evident he can protect himself and wage war without
raising taxes and stressing his subjects. Therefore, it is actually better for him to be miserly than
generous. Machiavelli thinks it is better for the prince to be feared than loved. For a prince who is
loved will be compassionate towards others, mainly his soldiers. When danger is at bay his men will
hold him in the highest regard. Should an attack occur they will very quickly turn their backs on him.
He may be viewed as weak and untrustworthy, thus easier to overtake. As he explains, And men are
less hesitant about harming someone who makes himself loved than one who makes himself feared
because love is held together by a chain of obligation which, since men are a sorry lot, is broken on
every occasion in which their own self interest is concerned: but fear is held together by dread of
punishment which will never abandon you (p.46). If he is loved rather than hated he can never keep an
army of soldiers under his command. However, he must not be so feared to the point he is hated to do
so he must not take what does not belong to him, and keep his hands off the wives of his subjects.
According to Machiavelli, as wise Prince will not keep his word if the circumstances for which he
made that promise are no longer relevant.

Science And Its Effect On Society Essay
Science is the process which discovers knowledge, knowledge in turn is power, and power is said to
bring about corruption. Therefore, through the transitive property, that implies that science will only
lead to corruption. Not necessarily a corruption of one s actions; for instance, science won t make a
politician accept a bribe. However, some would argue that science will lead to a degradation of
morals. For example, contemporary science may lead to a woman viewing her unborn baby as naught
but a ball of cells, similar to a tumor, which can be removed from her body with no moral dilemma.
The converse to this is the impediment of science due to humanity clinging to its archaic values. This
can be shown by the opposition to stem cell research and genetically modified embryos in the name of
morals and the inviolability of life. The stark contrast between following morals and advancing
science creates a juxtaposition that often manifests itself as a debate between religion and science.
Certain members of both the scientific and religious communities blindly adhere to their own opinions
and ideals. This butting of heads helps no one. As a result, a middle road must be found, one in which
neither progress nor morality are ignored. The polarity between these two forces is encapsulated by
the differences that Bertolt Brecht draws in his play Galileo between Galileo and the clergymen. This
play, when contrasted with the reality of Galileo s studies, provides a vehicle to discuss the

Social Conformity In The Fountainhead, By Ayn Rand
In a world plagued by the infinite expansion of corruptness, human beings are tainted by the natural
tendency to succumb to the horrors of social conformity. This social conditioning is the source of all
challenges that individuals are faced with in life. In the masterpiece The Fountainhead, by Ayn Rand,
the protagonist Howard Roark is considered to be a moral ideal that others must attempt to mirror. In
the midst of unimaginable distress and agony, Roark remains valiant and never ceases to remain true
to himself. Rand considered this trait to be one in which society should abide by a quality of
stubbornness to shuffle into the river of social acceptance. While many regard Roark to be an
outstanding role model, to imitate his ideals would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Howard Roark has a unique way of living his life, based on objectivism, attempting to emulate
this behavior is a paradox upon itself. Roark does not wish to be the symbol of anything. [He s] only
[himself] (602). While creating a character who is a moral ideal to emulate might have been what Ayn
Rand wished while writing The Fountainhead, she is contacting the very beliefs that Roark abides by.
Roark is a man of honor and dignity a man who would never turn his back on his morals. The most
important rule of Roark s philosophy is to be able to stand by one s beliefs. If an individual attempts to
emulate Roark s morals, then he/she is breaking the fundamental concept of objectivism. As stated in
plain text by Roark, reason can be fought with reason (346). While the reasoning behind emulating
Roark s behavior may be valid, it is impossible for one to do so without disgracing the objectivistic
lifestyle. While Howard Roark is an exceptional character in literature that has made a profound mark
on the advancement of human growth, who is to say that the polar opposite of Roark could not also be
considered a moral ideal ? In the eyes of Walt Whitman, whatever satisfies the soul is

The Gupta s promoted Sanskrit, which became the language of educated people, but this, did not
change the diversity of popular, regional languages. Both India and China were technologically
advanced in their societies with new inventions and ideas. Economic relationships between classical
China and India were similar and almost seemed to rely on one another. India was considered the
center of trade . Most trade routes were all passing through and dependent on India. Indian emphasis
on trade and merchant activity was far more than in China, and also greater in the classical
Mediterranean world. During the Maurya rule, India expanded their trade between the main centers of
civilization Eurasia and Africa. Some products produced at one end of the system, such as Chinese
silks and porcelains, were carried the whole length of the trading networks to be sold at the other end
of the routes, in Rome. As a result, China and India both had to work together and figure out a way to
make sure and help each other because both civilizations depended on each other for different things.
Social classifications and expectations between classical china and classical India were very similar to
each other. Both classical China and classical India had what is called a caste system. A caste system
is when a citizen is organized into a special group that determined everything from their job, to their
political rights, to their religious beliefs, and who they would marry.

Factors Affecting The Business Organization
Introduction: In the process of manufacturing, packaging, marketing and other necessary business
activities, businesses interact with internal and external factors which may affect the business and can
be affected by the business as well. A combination of both of the factors comprises the business
environment in which the business operates. The internal factors refer to the factors those function
within the business organization and the business can control or facilitate them as needed. Some
prominent internal factors are the working conditions, employees, employer to employee relations,
organizational culture and organizational structure etc. For a British American online chain store like
ASDA, the total numbers of employees working for the organization (140,000 employees working in
500 stores) is a key internal factor. On the other hand, external recruitment are factors as such as
political factors(Laws and regulation system, governmental activities and ownership module, tariffs/
Taxation and trade barriers, conflict between political parties and socio political unrest etc.)
Macroeconomic concerns (interest rate, exchange rate of currency, employment rate, unemployment
rate, discretionary income, GDP, recessions, depressions, inflation etc.), microeconomic concern
(market size, demand and supply diagram, distribution channel and delivery mode etc.), social and
technological factors which are not in the control of the business but affect the business by their

This question was the basis for Leonard Euler s investigation into graph theory. He observed when
answering the question that some graphs could be drawn in different way, and some with multiple
possibilities and other don t have any. Being able to answer this question is depends on the number of
vertices with the odd edges. In the example below display. When it refers to two odd veracities refers
to the connection between the line and the nodes. The example above is one that you are able to draw
without lifting your pencil off. This graph has two odd veracities what agrees with Euler s observation.
However this example has 6 odd vertices making this graph impossible to solve. Knowing this rule is
important when solving the seven bridges of Konigsberg problem.
Seven bridge of Konigsberg problem
Leonard Euler used graph theory to solve the 18th century problem seven bridges of Konigsberg. The
problem states:
Königsberg is divided into four parts by the river Pregel, and connected by seven bridges. Is it
possible to tour Königsberg along a path that crosses every bridge once, and at most once? You can

Donald Trump Is Vowing To Build A Massive, Impenetrable
Donald Trump is vowing to build a massive, impenetrable wall along the U.S. Mexico border to keep
out illegal Mexican migrants. The number of undocumented immigrants entering the United States has
steadily declined since the turn of the century.Nobody wants to live in a country where people are
afraid of their neighbors, and that is the exact message a border wall would send. This country was
founded on immigrants. People come here to better themselves and their Communities. The U.S.
Department of Homeland Security released an internal report that reveals the time frame and cost for
President Donald Trump s intended wall along the U.S. Mexico border: over three years to build(Hank

The US rely on illegal immigrants for cheap labor too.The money that is going to be wasted building
the wall can be used for other things that are actually needed here in the United States. A labor
shortage has left few hands to build houses and factories in the region, where wages have already been
rising and projects delayed. Now, the president s plan for immediate construction of a border wall will
force the government to find legal builders for a project that could employ thousands if not tens of
thousands. About half of construction workers in Texas are undocumented, and nationwide 14 percent
lack authorization for employment in the United States, according to the Workers Defense Project, an
Austin group that advocates for undocumented laborers (Etter,Pettypiece). Contractors in general
throughout the country have been saying it s been difficult to get workers, said Ken Simonson, chief
economist at the Associated General Contractors of America. Getting workers who would be vetted to
work on government projects and then getting them to these locations, which are pretty far away,
would be among the many challenges in getting this done (Etter,Pettypiece) . Mexicans specialize in
cement work and that is very much needed here.People come here to work and give their family better
standards of living. Most come here to live

Contributions Of William Golding
William Golding was a famous British author, poet, and playwright. Golding contributed to British
Literature by writing several works for which he was acknowledged. His most famous work is a novel
called Lord of the Flies which was published in 1954. Lord of the Flies is still being read today around
the world. In addition, two movie versions based on the novel were released. The first version was
released in the United States in 1963 and the second version was released in 1990. The Lord of the
Flies remains a relevant piece of literature today as it shows what happens in nature when there is no
central governing body. His pessimism about the nature of humanity was obviously reflected in his
writing. William Golding s childhood, school life, and war experience heavily influenced his work as
a playwright, poet, and an author of Lord of the Flies.
On September 19, 1911 William Golding was born at his maternal grandmother s house in Newquay,
Cornwall (England). This was approximately six years after his older brother Joseph was born.
Golding also had an adopted sister named Eileen. She was his blood cousin and was adopted in the
1930s. His parents were Alec and Mildred A. Golding (neé Curnoe). The whole family lived in
Marlborough, Wiltshire. Alec was a master of science at Marlborough Grammar School. Alec was also
a rationalist, religious skeptic, and an activist for the British Labour Party. Alec and Mildred

The Caps Test For Career Assessment
Section One The CAPS test administered for career assessment, the assessment relates to occupation
and occupational abilities. In order for this test to be consider reliable, it must consistent in that it
measures what it suppose to measure (Knapp, Knapp, Knapp Lee, 1992, p. 40), which is occupational
abilities. I believe that the CAPS test has acceptable reliable, if the test was re administered in two
weeks, I would have similar results because the timing and length of the test reduced my chances of
memorizing the content of the test. To have validity, a test must measure what it purports to measure
(Hays, 2013, p. 96). In my opinion, the CAPS has fairly acceptable validity but lacks face validity in
that it does not look like it measure occupational abilities but educational abilities. However, face
validity does not prove as evidence of validity (Hays, 2013, p. 97). I believe the CAPS has fairly
acceptable validity, because it fairly predicts appropriate careers according to the test taker s high
interest areas. While administering the test, I was very nervous at first. I knew that I had to strictly
following the administration instructions and was nervous that I would mess up, which could
negatively affect the test taker s results. Towards the third section, it was quite fun as I got the hang of

Summary Of The Novel O Pioneers ! By Willa Cather
Willa Cather is an author who uses similar aspects and events of her life and puts them into her novels.
This approach allows the reader to know what inspired the events happening throughout the novel.
After reading the novel O Pioneers! by Willa Cather, I began to search for ideas leading me deeper
into the meaning of the novel as a whole. O Pioneers! is a novel in which several of the key concepts
and character qualities can be better understood by learning more about the life of Willa Cather.
Aspects of O Pioneers! that involve the life of Willa Cather include where the novel is taking place,
the description of Alexandra s disposition, and the dominance Alexandra exhibits in her family.
Willa Cather decides to have the setting of the novel take place in Hanover, Nebraska. She is very
familiar with Nebraska because after her family moved from Virginia, this is where she grew up as a
young child and attended school (Baughman par. 2). At the start of the novel, Hanover, Nebraska is, A
cluster of low drab buildings huddled on the gray prairie, under a gray sky (Cather 1.1.1). The town is
being given a strong, gloomy, and dark feeling similar to what her childhood must have been like. We
then begin to see glimpses of this appear when we introduce the main character Alexandra and life in
Hanover. Alexandra state s, Three big Bohemians were drinking raw alcohol, tinctured with oil of

Air Pollution And Its Effects On The World
ABSTRACT
Present day scenario of Delhi in terms of air pollution is undermining and is predicted to continue
growing on that front. The air quality, in fact, is the worst of all the major cities in the world. One of
the reasons for the suffering air quality is Vehicular Pollution which is mainly due to the fuels. This
paper mainly intensifies on the use of CNG instead of Petroleum based fuels like petrol and diesel. It
compares all of the above with respect to pollution control as well as the expenses associated with
their use to suit the general public. This paper provides the current status of the use of these fuels and
their preferences.
INTRODUCTION
Normal human activity is more harmful for nature than the greatest wars or nuclear explosions in
history. For the last decade, pollution has been on a steep rise all across the world with air pollution
taking a lead. In India, particularly in Delhi, the level of pollution is scarily high making it the
eleventh most polluted metropolis in the world[1]. A considerable role in pollution is played by Air
pollution. Air pollution is caused by road dust, industrial gases, vehicular pollution, burning of solid
wastes and concrete batching[2].
Vehicular Pollution is due to emissions from vehicle including PM10 and PM2.5, Sulphur Oxides,
Nitrogen Oxides, Volatile organic compounds, CO, air pollutants including Benzene, Carbon di oxide
(owning to the greenhouse effect), partially burnt Hydro Carbons and certain amount of Lead.

Persuasive Essay About My Best Friends
Making never thought to be friends. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would ever be friends
with Julie. I have never seen her in 2 years and suddenly we re best friends. Goes when we never saw
each other, she ran away, the carnival, and the movies. First, when I first started going to my
grandmother s when I was 9. My aunt Jessica still was friends with my grandmother albeit she is her
daughter. So I would come over to their house. I never talked to Julie so I didn t know much about her.
I would usually play with Jacob or Jami. One day when Jessica s husband, Josh left, Jami at the park
by herself, and someone calls Child Protective Services on them and we don t know who, but they
said that my grandmother called. Now I know for a fact that she didn t and whoever said she did is
lying. Jessica was enraged by this and never talked to my grandmother once. So I never was allowed
to see that part of the family often. When Julie was younger, she believed in that grandmother was in
the wrong. (Complex)
Second, once Julie turned 18 she escaped out of the house with barely anything of hers. She was not
treated well in that house. After 2 years, she found love for my grandmother. (Complex) She went to
my grandmother s to have a place to stay, she had her a boyfriend Kyle is staying with her. She is
staying there for how long, I don t know. When I went there for the summertime like I conventionally

boyfriend and his acquaintances. It was an ok movie but it wasn t that terrific. Third, we are fairly
proximate friends now she by chance will bring me places with her. Where we customarily drive was
Jewel Osco, which is like 10 minutes away from my grandmother s. She usually goes there like every
other day, but not when the car has no gas. (Compound) She brought me to the fair in Peoria. It was
frolicsome only on the first day, for marginally of the time. (Compound) The last time I went there It

INTRODUCTION The Canterbury region is the second largest dairy producer in the country
(Statistics New Zealand, n.d.). Over the period of 2007 to 2012, the region has seen an increase of
60,000 hectares of irrigated farm land (Hills, 2013) due to the conversion of beef, sheep and crop
farms to water intensive dairy farming. There has also been an increase of 58% in the number of dairy
farms and a 31% increase in the average herd size of dairy farms (Burns, 2013). For maximum
production, sufficient irrigation is required for dairy farms (Food and Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations, 2000). Therefore dairying requires at least ten times more water than other farming
practices (Ward McKague, 2007). Over the summer months of December, January and February, this
irrigation increase would represent a decrease in the amount of stressed vegetation in the study area.
The study area is a 30km2 section of the Canterbury Plains, situated between the Waimakariri and
Rakaia Rivers (Figure 2), to the west of Christchurch City. It falls within Path 74, Row 90 of Landsat s
reference system. The area encompasses a variety of land use

The advocacy strategy must be evaluated because advocacy often only provides results partially, an
advocacy team needs to measure and monitor regularly and objectively what has been accomplished
and what more important to be done. Primarily, evaluation is important in terms of accountability
means to examine whether a case can be made that an advocacy effort produced its intended results
and also to ensure the advocacy efforts are doing what they said they would do and that the well

The Bloody Chamber By Angela Carter
Loneliness is a complex and usually an unpleasant emotional response to isolation as well as
separation; it is a product of the lack of contact experienced with another individual. Moreover, it
includes anxious feelings due to the absence of connection or communication with other beings, both
in the present and extending into the future. Some describe it as emptiness or hollowness inside of one
s being. In the narrative The Bloody Chamber (1979), Angela Carter s characters deal with the
emotion of loneliness by taking action and intervening through any circumstances. In contrast, in
Zadie Smith s Hanwell in Hell (2004) the main characters Clive and Hanwell deal with loneliness
simply through hope. While over twenty years apart, these two narratives explore how an individual
deals with the notion of loneliness through the use of the colour red, the symbolism in animals, and
the condition of blindness. However, Carter illustrates the refusal of the protagonist to simply accept
any circumstances; but the interference in any situation. On the other hand, Smith demonstrates the
acceptance and balance of the existing situation at hand through hope. Writers and poets use colors to
represent concrete images of their characters, scenes and events. Language itself uses a system of
symbols, either verbal or written, which enables colors to have a deeper meaning. Symbolism in
literature demonstrates a profound meaning to words which in turn helps transform the written content

Tacitus s Influence On The Roman Empire
Tacitus talks about the influence of Agrippina the younger as a sign of weakness of the principate
representing Claudius and Nero as her pawn. Her position of power as a female to this day is
unmatched; known as the granddaughter, daughter, sister, wife, and mother of men. ( Tacitus)
Agrippina, an Imperial woman of the Julio Claudian bloodline a female Caesar lived through all five
of the Julio Claudian emperors Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero. Agrippina the
younger roles in the empire is recognized but is not credited for the influence she had in shaping the
Roman Empire from the time of Claudius to the beginning of Nero s reign. Tacitus is writing is from
the perspective of an old Roman Senator providing the accounts of Agrippina life in power from a
male point of view. His accounts of her life portray her as a vindictive, scandalous female who has
stepped above her station. (Tacitus) Suetonius another old Roman Senator accounts would agree with
Tacitus in regards to Agrippina s outrageous behavior. However, it can be argued that she was an
emperor while she is not given credit her influence played a huge part in affecting the direction of the
Empire and Roman society especially when it comes to women in a position of power.
Tacitus and Suetonius provide fragments of the history of the Roman Empire through the Julio
Claudian reign. Agrippina the younger bloodline is strong as a descendant of Augustus and Agrippa;
she s connected to all five emperors.

Petersel On Peds
Zach Petersel, in his essay, Here s Why Suspensions Won t Deter PED users Like Maria Sharapova,

that athletes will continue to take PEDs until they are caught. That was the case of Maria Sharapova.
She began taking Meldonium, a PED, before it was banned and continued to use it afterwards until she

belief is the description of the physical and metaphysical universe. Their beliefs on the subject are
deeply engrained in the religion s basic faith; cosmology is related to the church s views on divinity,
extraterrestrial life, pre mortal existence, and the afterlife. Mormon divinity revolves around the core
beliefs in exaltation and eternal progression: the idea that mortals will be given an opportunity to have
leading roles in other heavenly kingdoms, themselves. One of the key goals in Mormonism is to
achieve exaltation through Jesus s atonement; as a result they inherit godly attributes. Mormonism
holds the belief that people who follow God s example will become like gods in the afterlife, having
all power, glory, dominion, and knowledge (LDS Church 227). This belief that people may one day
become god like figures in the afterlife leads to the assumption that Mormons believe in the existence
of other worlds like the one that we live in, that exalted people would be able to rule over. The
teachings of Mormonism also include that the exalted will live with their earthly families in the next
life and have spirit children (LDS Church 11), continuing the growth of their families. According to
the Mormonism belief, exaltation is obtained only by reaching the most high of the degrees

The Death And Life Of Great American Cities
Ten million dollars is a lot of money. When this money has been generated over years of increased
taxes, and is to be put back into a community, it s important to know that this money is being used
wisely. Ten million dollars is the amount of money that the Budlong Woods community is using in
their Tax Increment Financing Redevelopment Area Project. This paper will investigate the current
state of the Budlong Woods community, as well as the specific focus areas of the redevelopment
project and determine whether Budlong Woods is on track to be Chicago s next successful
neighborhood.
Through Jane Jacobs book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, she details precise features
that make a city successful. Among these, safe sidewalks, lively parks, and diversity of uses and users
are the most important, and will be the focus of study. This paper will compare and contrast the
changes taking place in the Budlong Woods community with those that are successful or unsuccessful
in other city neighborhoods. Through these comparisons it will be determined whether the money
invested in Budlong Woods will drive the community into prosperity, or like many other city
rehabilitation projects, simply be a waste of money that strips the area of its diversity and unique
characteristics.
Budlong Woods is a small community within Chicago s Lincoln Square neighborhood. The specific
boundaries of this quiet, northwest neighborhood are Bryn Mawr to the north, Foster to the south,

Plant Mitochondri Cytochrome Oxidase And The Cyanide...
Plant mitochondria include two terminal oxidases: cytochrome oxidase and the cyanide insensitive
alternative oxidase. Electron partitioning between the two pathways is regulated by the redox
equilibrium of the ubiquinone pool and the activation state of the alternative oxidase. The alternative
oxidase appears to exist as a dimer, which is active in the reduced, noncovalently linked form, and
inactive when in the oxidized, covalently linked form. Reduction of the oxidase in detached tobacco
mitochondria occurs upon oxidation of isocitrate or malate and may be mediated by matrix NAD(P)H.
The energy of the reduced oxidase is influenced by certain other organic acids, notably pyruvate,
which appear to interact directly with the enzyme. Pyruvate alters the interaction between the
alternative oxidase and ubiquinol so that the oxidase becomes active at much lower levels of ubiquinol
and competes with the cytochrome pathway for electrons. These will be further explored in this piece.
Cyanide resistant respiration was found toward the beginning of the twentieth century as a singularity
in thermogenic plants in the middle of anthesis and was later seen to be a regular highlight of plant
respiration. The think of respiration impenetrable to cyanide is related with the closeness in the
respiratory chain of an supplemental terminal oxidase alternative oxidase (AOX). The closeness of
AOX in higher plant mitochondria propose an intriguing, favorable exchange regarding its title in vivo

The Design Summit will walk you through the Human Centred Design process in stages. The first few days are your chances to discover how the process works, learn about the development context and generally build the foundations of your knowledge base. We will then define a design challenge, and travel to the communities to begin the Empathise phase. In Empathise, you will spend some time in a local community learning about their life, jobs, values, skills and challenges. This is your biggest research opportunity so be sure to make the most of it. Here you will begin the Ideate phase, sharing ideas and brainstorming to design new products, services or processes to support your community. On the final day we will leave the community and travel to location where you can obtain the materials required to begin prototyping. This process is not linear. You will reiterate many times through Empathise, Ideate and Prototype stages whilst in the communities, and again once we move on. Each time your design will improve and you will learn some useful lessons about HCD along the way. You are expected to fail. In fact, the more you fail, the better your final product will ... • 3. Character Analysis Of Everyman Everyman, a morality play, was written in the late fifteenth century with the intention of communicating to both educated, as well as, illiterate audiences some of the moral instructions regarding the way to live life and prepare for judgment day. Liberty University (Lesson 26 presentation) says, This play taught masses of people about Christ and what constitutes a God centered moral life. (Liberty University. n.d.) The use of characters such as; Death, Goods, Beauty, Knowledge, Good deeds, and of course, Everyman, create a realistic understanding of the moral message. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As each character betrays their promises to never leave or forsake Everyman, the reader can make a personal connection that supports their understanding that the only way to salvation is through Christ; not through the characters of the play such as Goods or Fellowship. All of the characters can be taken literally to understand their nature in the real world. Death, as a character, is used as an analogy or allegory for literal death. The author is demonstrating the use of Death to bring people back to God. As Everyman continued in his search to find someone willing to accompany him to his reckoning he comes across Good Deeds. Although the character, Good Deeds, was willing to accompany Everyman, he is initially unable to so because of the fact that Good Deeds was never Everyman s primary focus so he was lacking strength in that area. That being said, Good Deeds points Everyman in the direction of his sister, Knowledge, who encourages him to seek Confession. By speaking with Confession, he seeks forgiveness while also punishing himself by way of scourge of penance. Everyman is then forgiven of his sins and Good Deeds rises from the ground strong enough to accompany him to his final judgment. In this situation, God uses Death to free people of their sin and bring them to salvation. Prior to being comforted by Good Deeds, Everyman was overwhelmed by fear and anxiety. He was alone ... Even though Wilbur was accepted into Yale, he decided not to go because he had his teeth knocked out a few weeks prior. This was his set back, being that he really wanted to go. Despite this setback, in 1892, Wilbur started his bicycle business, manufacturing and producing bikes. He designed and hand made them himself. He went with his passion that he found at the age of eleven, creating and designing. Wilbur Wright was also willing to try something different, and go a different route. Overtime, teachers have quickly realized that they cannot reach all students with a one size fits all approach to instruction. Therefore, the goal of a differentiated classroom is to maximize growth and individual success of each student by providing different avenues for the students to learn the content, to process the information and ideas, and to create a final product. Differentiating instruction needs to be a daily component of my planning and teaching. Some of students need to be challenged with opportunities to expand their mind with advanced learning activities. Other students need extra scaffolding and support in order to understand the basic concepts of the course. Differentiation can be an extremely effective instruction strategy for teachers as they work to meet the needs of English Language Learners. Chamot O Malley (1994) explored how differentiation can best be used when instructing ELL s. They examined direct language instruction, culturally inclusive environments, and differentiation. When differentiating or modifying instruction teachers it is helpful if teachers activate or build background knowledge, provide scaffolding, include authentic experiences, and simplify language. Whelton, a former graduate student at Saginaw Valley State University, defines excessive pay as, compensation that is 20% or greater than the national average CEO salary (Whelton 15). Therefore, excessive pay would constitute compensation over $13.8 million per year (Chamberlain). A stakeholder is anyone who is directly affected by the performance of an organization and thereby, holds a stake in that company (Schermerhorn 73). Some examples of stakeholders are directors, shareholders, executive officers, and all employees. It is important to understand why executive officers are compensated at the high levels they are today to determine the benefits and disadvantages of the argument. • 17. Science And Its Effect On Society Essay Science is the process which discovers knowledge, knowledge in turn is power, and power is said to bring about corruption. Therefore, through the transitive property, that implies that science will only lead to corruption. Not necessarily a corruption of one s actions; for instance, science won t make a politician accept a bribe. However, some would argue that science will lead to a degradation of morals. For example, contemporary science may lead to a woman viewing her unborn baby as naught but a ball of cells, similar to a tumor, which can be removed from her body with no moral dilemma. The converse to this is the impediment of science due to humanity clinging to its archaic values. This can be shown by the opposition to stem cell research and genetically modified embryos in the name of morals and the inviolability of life. The stark contrast between following morals and advancing science creates a juxtaposition that often manifests itself as a debate between religion and science. Certain members of both the scientific and religious communities blindly adhere to their own opinions and ideals. This butting of heads helps no one. As a result, a middle road must be found, one in which neither progress nor morality are ignored. Getting workers who would be vetted to work on government projects and then getting them to these locations, which are pretty far away, would be among the many challenges in getting this done (Etter,Pettypiece) . • 24. Contributions Of William Golding William Golding was a famous British author, poet, and playwright. Golding contributed to British Literature by writing several works for which he was acknowledged. His most famous work is a novel called Lord of the Flies which was published in 1954. Lord of the Flies is still being read today around the world. In addition, two movie versions based on the novel were released. The first version was released in the United States in 1963 and the second version was released in 1990. The Lord of the Flies remains a relevant piece of literature today as it shows what happens in nature when there is no central governing body. His pessimism about the nature of humanity was obviously reflected in his writing. William Golding s childhood, school life, and war experience heavily influenced his work as a playwright, poet, and an author of Lord of the Flies. On September 19, 1911 William Golding was born at his maternal grandmother s house in Newquay, Cornwall (England). This was approximately six years after his older brother Joseph was born. Golding also had an adopted sister named Eileen. She was his blood cousin and was adopted in the 1930s. His parents were Alec and Mildred A. Golding (neé Curnoe). The whole family lived in Marlborough, Wiltshire. Alec was a master of science at Marlborough Grammar School. Alec was also a rationalist, religious skeptic, and an activist for the British Labour Party. Alec and Mildred participated in political demonstrations in support of women s ... • 25. The Caps Test For Career Assessment Section One The CAPS test administered for career assessment, the assessment relates to occupation and occupational abilities. In order for this test to be consider reliable, it must consistent in that it measures what it suppose to measure (Knapp, Knapp, Knapp Lee, 1992, p. 40), which is occupational abilities. I believe that the CAPS test has acceptable reliable, if the test was re administered in two weeks, I would have similar results because the timing and length of the test reduced my chances of memorizing the content of the test. To have validity, a test must measure what it purports to measure (Hays, 2013, p. 96). In my opinion, the CAPS has fairly acceptable validity but lacks face validity in that it does not look like it measure occupational abilities but educational abilities. However, face validity does not prove as evidence of validity (Hays, 2013, p. 97). I believe the CAPS has fairly acceptable validity, because it fairly predicts appropriate careers according to the test taker s high interest areas. While administering the test, I was very nervous at first. I knew that I had to strictly following the administration instructions and was nervous that I would mess up, which could negatively affect the test taker s results. Towards the third section, it was quite fun as I got the hang of being the administrator. Also, knowing that this was practice eased my anxiety and made it quite fun. This approach allows the reader to know what inspired the events happening throughout the novel. After reading the novel O Pioneers! by Willa Cather, I began to search for ideas leading me deeper into the meaning of the novel as a whole. O Pioneers! is a novel in which several of the key concepts and character qualities can be better understood by learning more about the life of Willa Cather. Aspects of O Pioneers! that involve the life of Willa Cather include where the novel is taking place, the description of Alexandra s disposition, and the dominance Alexandra exhibits in her family. Willa Cather decides to have the setting of the novel take place in Hanover, Nebraska. She is very familiar with Nebraska because after her family moved from Virginia, this is where she grew up as a young child and attended school (Baughman par. 2). At the start of the novel, Hanover, Nebraska is, A cluster of low drab buildings huddled on the gray prairie, under a gray sky (Cather 1.1.1). The town is being given a strong, gloomy, and dark feeling similar to what her childhood must have been like. We then begin to see glimpses of this appear when we introduce the main character Alexandra and life in Hanover. Over the period of 2007 to 2012, the region has seen an increase of 60,000 hectares of irrigated farm land (Hills, 2013) due to the conversion of beef, sheep and crop farms to water intensive dairy farming. There has also been an increase of 58% in the number of dairy farms and a 31% increase in the average herd size of dairy farms (Burns, 2013). For maximum production, sufficient irrigation is required for dairy farms (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2000). Therefore dairying requires at least ten times more water than other farming practices (Ward McKague, 2007). Over the summer months of December, January and February, this irrigation increase would represent a decrease in the amount of stressed vegetation in the study area. The study area is a 30km2 section of the Canterbury Plains, situated between the Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers (Figure 2), to the west of Christchurch City. • 38. The Bloody Chamber By Angela Carter Loneliness is a complex and usually an unpleasant emotional response to isolation as well as separation; it is a product of the lack of contact experienced with another individual. Moreover, it includes anxious feelings due to the absence of connection or communication with other beings, both in the present and extending into the future. Some describe it as emptiness or hollowness inside of one s being. In the narrative The Bloody Chamber (1979), Angela Carter s characters deal with the emotion of loneliness by taking action and intervening through any circumstances. In contrast, in Zadie Smith s Hanwell in Hell (2004) the main characters Clive and Hanwell deal with loneliness simply through hope. While over twenty years apart, these two narratives explore how an individual deals with the notion of loneliness through the use of the colour red, the symbolism in animals, and the condition of blindness. However, Carter illustrates the refusal of the protagonist to simply accept any circumstances; but the interference in any situation. On the other hand, Smith demonstrates the acceptance and balance of the existing situation at hand through hope. Writers and poets use colors to represent concrete images of their characters, scenes and events. Language itself uses a system of symbols, either verbal or written, which enables colors to have a deeper meaning. • 42. The Mormon Belief System The Mormon belief system has many different principles that are unique and set themselves apart from other world religions, one of which being their views on cosmology. The Mormon cosmology belief is the description of the physical and metaphysical universe. Their beliefs on the subject are deeply engrained in the religion s basic faith; cosmology is related to the church s views on divinity, extraterrestrial life, pre mortal existence, and the afterlife. Mormon divinity revolves around the core beliefs in exaltation and eternal progression: the idea that mortals will be given an opportunity to have leading roles in other heavenly kingdoms, themselves. One of the key goals in Mormonism is to achieve exaltation through Jesus s atonement; as a result they inherit godly attributes. Mormonism holds the belief that people who follow God s example will become like gods in the afterlife, having all power, glory, dominion, and knowledge (LDS Church 227). This belief that people may one day become god like figures in the afterlife leads to the assumption that Mormons believe in the existence of other worlds like the one that we live in, that exalted people would be able to rule over. • 44. Plant Mitochondri Cytochrome Oxidase And The Cyanide... Plant mitochondria include two terminal oxidases: cytochrome oxidase and the cyanide insensitive alternative oxidase. Electron partitioning between the two pathways is regulated by the redox equilibrium of the ubiquinone pool and the activation state of the alternative oxidase. The alternative oxidase appears to exist as a dimer, which is active in the reduced, noncovalently linked form, and inactive when in the oxidized, covalently linked form. Reduction of the oxidase in detached tobacco mitochondria occurs upon oxidation of isocitrate or malate and may be mediated by matrix NAD(P)H. The energy of the reduced oxidase is influenced by certain other organic acids, notably pyruvate, which appear to interact directly with the enzyme. Pyruvate alters the interaction between the alternative oxidase and ubiquinol so that the oxidase becomes active at much lower levels of ubiquinol and competes with the cytochrome pathway for electrons.
