One of my favorite events that happened this semester during first year sem was hearing the voices
from inside. Getting to hear these quick poems that these women wrote was amazing. Most were good
and came from the heart. Hearing from these women made me want to talk with some of them after.
When I did go to talk to them I heard about some of their experiences and get to know why doing this
program helps. Some of them were into some hard stuff and lost some of their family and loved ones
because of it. They get ten minutes to write their piece and they really write what they are thinking.
Some talk about their time in jail through a poem and others talk about what it was like before getting

DiGeorgio about having privilege. Doing the bead activity made you think about what privilege you
have. Going through the list made you think more about what people actually go through on a daily

There are so many new issues happening in the world people are losing out on some of the great

The United States of America was a boiling time in the 1940 s. With World War II approaching,

The USA needed more men for war and more people in the work force to cover jobs. Because of the
desperateness and proudness of citizens, not only did women benefit but also racial minorities,
homosexuals and the mentally ill benefited.
Women all around the USA were picking up their husbands wrenches and were going to work. They
had finally gotten the share of independence they longed for but, it wouldn t take long for women to
take another step towards ultimate civil freedom. In March of 1942, women were able to step out of
their dresses and jump into militant uniform. No longer did they need to become nurses to be in war,
but now they had the opportunity to become greater than men. Women took jobs as WASP s , WAVES

Mr Beaver had Somatic Symptom Disorder due to his constant worrying of brain numbness, but as I
looked deeper into his case I believe his symptoms match Illness Anxiety Disorder. I went back and
forth on which disorder he has or if he only had Schizophrenia. As I looked further into Mr Beavers
case I believe he has Schizophrenia and Illness Anxiety Disorder. The symptoms that are present that
support Schizophrenia include delusions, hallucinations, and negative symptoms. Mr Beaver showed
two types of delusions. The first type was Persecution. As he was leaving the doctors he had told other
patients that the doctors are out to get them, by saying not to trust the doctors. He also said that the
doctors must all be working together and that they were told not to tell him what is wrong with him.
Both of these symptoms are part of the Persecution Delusion. Due to this feeling he began to isolate
himself in his room due to the fact that it was a safe place for him. The second delusion is Reference
Delusion. It was mentioned that Justin Beaver felt that the TV was talking to him specifically. Mr

Hans Christian Anderson one said that where words fail, music speaks. Nowhere is this truer than in
The Piano Lesson by August Wilson. The Piano Lesson tells the story of family that struggles in the
side and what do with a family heirloom that takes the form of an ornately carved upright piano.
Bernice wishes to keep the piano but her brother, Boy Willie, wishes to sell the piano for land because
according to him Bernice is not doing anything but letting it sit there and rot because no one is playing
it. Yet despite what Boy Willie says the piano actually gets quite a bit of use in the play. Along with
playing the piano the characters can also be seen singing in the play. The songs the characters sing and
perform does a good job of relating the characters thoughts and actions to a more musical medium.
From songs such as Maretha s beginners piece on the piano to Wining Boy s more experienced yet
melancholic tune the music of The Piano Lesson tells us about the character s pasts and presents.
Starting with the song Berta, Berta (which is initially sung by Boy Willie but soon joined in by
Lymon, Wining Boy, and lastly Doaker), the song tells the story of a man working on Parchman Farm,
known formally as the Mississippi State Penitentiary, who tells his sweetheart, Alberta, to not wait for
him and to go ahead and marry. The song itself is a prison work song typically sung by those
imprisoned who worked on Parchman. What this lets us know is a multitude of facts about the people
singing this song. For example the most glaring fact is that they have spent time or know someone
who spent time at Parchman Farm this show the racism faced by the Charles family and countless
other families in early 20th century America. With Boy Willie being the one to initiate the singing of a
song with such a history combined with his desire to purchase Sutter s land, as seen in various pages,
one can infer that he is an ambitious albeit brash man who choses to take control of the situation the
family has found itself in and honor the wishes of his father and grandfather, Boy Charles and Willie
Boy respectively.

As this story begins, Mr. Wright has been murdered and his wife the star witness. The evidence is
slowly breaking down their so called case. Women of this time period were not treated like men, a
woman was only good when she was slaving for her husband and his needs. As Emily Dickinson once
wrote Hope is the thing with feathers/ that perches in the soul/ and sings the tune without the words, /
and never stops at all. Mrs. Wright used to sing but Mr. Wright did not like that and forced her to a
quiet. Mr. Wright was a bitter old man playing a gentleman; never taking a liking to kids he stole her

After teaching mathematics in a middle school classroom, I recognized my likes and dislikes about
teaching math. My biggest dislike about teaching mathematics is the fact that many students have a
negative attitude about mathematics and have become discouraged throughout their elementary years.
Once a student believes they are not capable of doing math, it is hard to change their belief. Another
dislike about teaching mathematics is that during this change to a more problem solving and student
centered teaching technique, students are coming to us from teachers who focus on procedural
knowledge instead of conceptual knowledge. Conceptual knowledge is knowledge that consists of rich
relationships or webs of ideas while procedural knowledge of mathematics is knowledge of the rules
and the procedures (Van De Walle, 28). While there are a few negatives about teaching mathematics,
there are several things I liked about teaching middle school mathematics. I liked how the students
were eager to learn the content and were confident in their abilities to share their findings with their
peers. Each student has a different background when it comes to mathematics and real world scenarios

industry practices established early in the 1960s, however, the turn of the century has produced such
