Analysis Of Eric Erikson s Eight Stages Of Identity Theory
Introduction Identity or Self concept is something that evolves or matures right along with us; it
changes from physical concepts to more complex thoughts. (Damon Hart, 1988) Questions like Who
am I? and What is my Purpose? Have perplexed humanities greatest philosophers; the complexity of
these questions has even created a study of purpose; Teleology, the study of purpose. John Locke held
that personal identity is a matter of psychological continuity. He considered the self to be founded on
consciousness and not on the substance of either the soul or the body. (Nimbalkar, 2011) Eric Erikson
s theoretical perspective of identity Eric Erikson s theoretical perspective of identity perspective built
on Freud s work proposed that people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, when initiative is discouraged the child may begin to develop feelings of guilt. 4. Industry
vs. Inferiority As children continue through the stages, they become increasingly aware of themselves
as individuals. Children who achieve and are praised for their achievements develop self confidence.
Children who are constantly criticized may develop feelings of inferiority. 5. Identity vs. Role
Confusion Erikson argued that teenagers undergo an identity crisis which they must establish.
Adolescents who struggle to find a purpose to their lives and a separate identity from their parents
may be unable to establish one. 6. Intimacy vs. Isolation After a young person has established his or
her identity, Erikson proposes that a person now is able to establish intimate relationships with others.
Failure to do so can result in long term feelings of isolation. 7. Generativity vs. Stagnation People who
can provide guidance to their children can feel a sense of purpose. Those who cannot resolute this
stage will stagnate and have a difficult time achieving the next stage. 8. Ego Integrity vs. Despair This
stage deals with reflection of the life a person has lived. If the previous stages have been met, then a
person can die content. Those who cannot resolve this stage due to the irresolution of previous ones
can fall into despair as their life seems to have had purpose.

Interpreter Of Maladies Analysis
The literary fiction The Interpreter of Maladies gives us insight on the human condition which tells us
as readers that communication is important but it is often of human nature to misinterpret the
interactions. After Ms. Das called his job as an interpreter romantic , Mr. Kapasi developed a fantasy
where Mrs. Das is the perfect companion who would reveal the disappointment of her marriage, and
he in his. (92). The quote explains the misinterpretation because of Mr. Kapasi s relationship with his
wife who had little regard for his career as an interpreter. (90). Unlike Mrs. Kapasi, Mrs. das shows
some interest in Mr. Kapasi s occupation which makes Mr. Kapasi believe that it could more than a
fabricated fantasy, which cannot really happen, mainly because Mr. ... Show more content on

Das tells Mr. Kapasi her secret. Mrs. Das Was tired of feeling so terrible all the time and hoping
you[Mr. Kapasi] could help me feel better, say the right thing. (99). However, Mr. Das doesn t think
that he should help her because he felt insulted that Mrs. Das should ask him to interpret her common,
trivial little secret. (99). Both characters illustrate misinterpretation because Mr. Kapasi thought of
Mrs. Das a romantic companion, but Mrs. Das assumed Mr. Kapasi as someone who could help her
with her problem because he worked as an interpreter. A last example of misinterpretation in
communication is shown when Mr. Kapasi obliges to Mrs. Das request and the answer he gives asks if
what Mrs. Das felt was really pain or if it was just guilt. It s Mrs. Das who demonstrates the
misinterpretation when she glared at Mr. Kapasi....opened the car door and began walking up the path

mentioned before, Mrs. Das thought that Mr. Kapasi who was an interpreter must have understood or

John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men And Our Day Out
In this essay I am going to compare and contrast the theme of social deprivation in Of Mice and Men
and Our Day Out. John Steinbeck, writer of Of Mice and Men lived in California in 1930 s and the
novel was written in the time of the Great Depression in America. As a result the people were in
poverty. The reason why there was a great depression was unemployment and stock market crash. The
novel is about two itinerant workers having a dream about buying a farm. Social deprivation was
conspicuous during this time in America and also suffering from economic decline which is
exemplified through George and Lennie, who are looking their own place to live. On the other hand,
in Our Day Out the play was written in 1970s in Liverpool. During this time Liverpool s economy was
also falling because there was high unemployment. Willy Russell illustrates this through poverty
through Carol on the play. Steinbeck shows In Of Mice and Men that the character George and Lennie
are penniless. For example, it says Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the
world. They got no family. They don t belong no place This shows us that they are poor because they
work on the farm and George says that we don t have any families or a place to live. This link to the
Great Depression in America because people were in poverty and unemployment, so it is very difficult
to get money. Similarly, in Our Day Out we know the children are very poor. For example, it says

Military Commissions Act of 2006 How Should Detainees Be...
Guantanamo Bay in Cuba houses some of the most dangerous people. The people being held have
ranged in committing various crimes. What makes Guantanamo Bay well known is how the time
period a detainee has spent in prison without a trial. While in prison for an extensive period of time, a
detainee is bound to receive discipline for not following the guards. There are often a variety of
different methods that the guards use to teach discipline to the detainees. All who follow Guantanamo
Bay as institution often criticizes the measures taken. What makes Guantanamo Bay an ironic place to
start this journey is because Guantanamo Bay is at the center of attention to a very important,
controversial law passed in 2006. The controversial law was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By passing the Military Commissions Act of 2006, the person in control of all decisions would be the
President. They also gave the president absolute power to designate enemy combatants, and to set his
own definitions for torture (Military Commissions). If someone were to identify the players who were
deemed responsible for this act to pass, that someone would most likely identify President Bush and
Congress. These central figures wanted to take the extra step in keeping the United States protected
from any additional acts of terrorism. With what is stated in the Military Commissions Act of 2006
and those who stressed for the passage of the act, mixed messages are sent. President Bush, at the
time, believed in less harm and more protection for the United States due to the extenuating
circumstances. By creating a law that gives the President absolute authority and leaving no room for
improvement, how was the United States going to look like? What it going to be looked at as a weak
country with no control of power? The other player involved, Congress, was weak on its part. By
allowing this act to pass with authority give to the President, this law was interpreted as
unconstitutional and violated the rights of the judicial branch and ultimately the supreme law of the
land, The Constitution. How the judicial branch got involved in this matter was based upon its given

Government Over Regulation Of The United States
Camille Nelson
Kline
Honors English 10
10 April 2017
Government Over Regulation The United States has slowly conformed to the new ways of the Western
policy of democratic socialism in order to achieve equality in the eyes of the law, but with this the
necessary regulatory compliance of all citizens must be provided. If all American citizens do agree to
abide by the rules implemented by the United States, the freedom that they came here for would be
nonexistent, and they would no longer have the ability to truly live the infamous American dream .
The economy is also beginning to move away from the capitalist ways and move toward an ideology
of equality among the wealth and incomes of the people, and the only apparent way to achieve ...

Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves (Tanner 1).
Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize winner, Chief Economist at Roosevelt Institute, best selling author, and
a professor at Columbia University explains the problems with the current economy in the United
States in his book Rewriting the Rules of the American Economy. He explains that even though the
one percent of the United States population is living a prosperous life, the remaining ninety nine
percent are being hurt by this reality (Stiglitz 8). From this it can be concluded that the regulations
currently being pressed upon the majority of the population are hurting more than benefitting.
Capitalism is defined as an economic and political system in which a country s trade and industry are
controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state (Oxford Dictionary 1). There has been
a longing to find a balance between this and socialism. The laissez faire is the commonly known
economic idea of a government refraining from interfering in the free market in order to allow the
people to control their own means of production and selling of goods. This seems to be ruined by the
over regulation of the economy by the government because much of the US economic benefits rely on
the free market. Also, capitalism allows for people to voluntarily take part in making their own wealth.
Without this, competition among businesses would be gone and

The Novel The New Atlantis By Ursula K. Le Guin
The short story The New Atlantis paints a picture of a dystopian United States, where the government
has become an overwhelming force. The people living in the States are left in a state of neglect, where
harsh administration and forced ideals are the norm. Ursula K. Le Guin s story follows Belle, a
woman who leaves her memoirs to the rising oceans that are swallowing up the continent. Belle s
story records the struggle of a person s life under the suffocating government, with her husband Simon
attempting to gain political strength through his scientific vision. The themes of the story are based on
a damning critique of the direction that humanity along with science and technology have taken under
capitalism (Maxwell 15). With its heavy hand, civilization has consumed itself with conflict and
consumption. By the end of the story, the United States has completely collapsed into the ocean,
collapsed under the weight of its own government. The story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas
, also by Ursula K. Le Guin, tells the tale of an idealistic city called Omelas. Shoshana Knapp
illustrates the lives of Omelas as a complex moral problem: The basic situation . . . is the promise of
mass bliss in exchange for a unique torment (par. 5). When children become young adults in Omelas,
they are shown a morbid truth about their society the basis of Omelas whole existence relies on the
suffering of one lonely child locked in a room. This dilemma introduces many uncomfortable

Qualities of a Strong Teenage Girl
Qualities of a Strong Teenage Girl
Being a teenage girl, I know what it is like to be let down, put down, and feel completely alone. But I
also know what it takes to get back up, be courageous, and fight. One quality a teenage girl must have
is courage. Courage to stand up for yourself and others. To succeed, a teenage girl must have smarts.
Street smarts as well as book smarts are important. However, one quality that most teenage girls have
is a carelessly open heart; letting anyone in that tries. These qualities of a teenage girl may lead her to
heartbreak and emotional struggles, but overall can contribute to a successful life. The first quality an
adolescent girl must have to succeed, is courage. One reason for this quality is ... Show more content

She may do this because she wants to feel loved and needed. This leads to my second reason which is
the motivation of her partner. He may be looking to take advantage of her and wishes to leave her
heartbroken. When the partner realizes the girl s despiration, he feels a position of power and can
further take advantage of her; body and soul. Through my experience, I hear how girls can be taken
advantage of, and move from partner to partner as a reaction. Avoiding a broken heart can be
accomplished by having a strong heart that is selective and strives for mutual and balanced
commitment. A final reason for a teenage girl to be cautious with her heart is in connection to her self
worth. When a girl gets her heart broken, she may feel intense loneliness, or she may look quickly for
someone else to love and care for in order to avoid or fill the void of emotional pain. She may start
feeling negatively about herself and her body and believe she will never be good enough. This poor
self image can lead to severe depression and self harm. Many times, this heartache happens because a
girl lets someone into her life without boundaries, or standards and once she realize this, she can feel
defeated. For these reasons, having an open heart without using intelligence is a dangerous
combination for a teenage girl. As you can see by the reasons above, teenage girls must have
intelligence and courage to be successful.

Life Without Passion And Enthusiasm Scares Me
The only way to do great work is to do what you love. If you haven t found it yet, keep looking. Don t
settle. warned Steve Jobs, in his Stanford commencement speech in 2005. I hear these words echo in
my ears from time to time. The thought of living a life without passion and enthusiasm scares me. We
all have had to do things that didn t interest us at times, but I look at each day as a new opportunity to
get closer to my ultimate goal. As a kid, I enjoyed being the performer, the artist. I am not that bad of a
performer, I might add. But as I grew up, I found myself more involved in discovering artists and
talking about them. It took me a while to realize my genuine interest in making a career in this
industry and differentiate it from just a mere hobby. With no family background in the field, it was
difficult to enter the industry and study its dynamics. When I was introduced to blogging, I made it my
starting point to learn about the entertainment industry. With a bachelor s degree in commerce and an
MBA in marketing, I had germane knowledge about the field. I put my marketing class techniques to
practical use. I was promoting city events and taking interviews of some local and international artists.
I started networking in the industry and got myself an internship with one of India s top notch indie
record label and artist management firms, Only Much Louder. From my experience as an intern, and

Dupot Pipeline Tragedy
The horrible tragedy at the DuPont Chemical Plant in La Porte, Texas, which ended in four innocent
people losing their lives, began roughly 5 days prior to the accident. It was November 10, 2014, when
a reactor in the plants Lannate unit, an insecticide DuPont produces for many agricultural purposes,
went down for an unscheduled maintenance. Lannate is produced by reacting toxic methyl mercaptan
with other chemicals. Two days later on November 12th, after all the up keep was taken care of on the
reactor, they tried to start it up again. They were unsuccessful in starting up the reactor, and further
investigation revealed a slurry blocking any passage through the pipelines which lead to the reactor.
However, slurries were a very common thing during shutdowns. They form when methyl mercaptan
reacts with other stagnate chemicals in the pipeline, forming a blockage. To clear this slurry, operators
began pumping hot water through the piping to try and break it up. By noon on November 13th,
operators deemed they had cleared the slurry. During the hot water pumping, a valve was accidentally
left opened, which allowed roughly 2,000 pounds of water to flow into the methyl mercaptan feedline
and storage tank. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They decided to run hot water directly over top of the section of piping where the blockage was
located to try and bring the temperature up to 52°F to melt the methyl mercaptan hydrate. They would
use pressure indicators along the piping to identify where the hydrate was as it began to move along
the piping. However, when they began this process, they closed a valve that would have allowed
methyl mercaptan to flow from the storage tank and into the shutdown reactor unit. Due to this valve
being closed, the methyl mercaptan that was being pumped from the storage tank to try and help clear
the blockage had only one place to go, and that was into the vent header

During walking and running, leg muscles produce forces that impact the tibiofemoral joint. These
forces can have a negative impact on the development, health and maintenance of the cartilage and
meniscus in that joint (and increased load on the knees and the tibiofemoral joint can result in
osteoarthritis). The tibiofemoral load is varied depending on the muscle coordination patterns. The
laboratory created a musculoskeletal model of subject to analyze the tibiofemoral load, and an
optimization framework to calculate the load from muscle coordination. Using the model and
optimization framework, the laboratory was able to understand the impact of different muscle
coordination on the tibiofemoral load. The laboratory was able to precisely predict tibiofemoral forces
when compared to in vivo measurements during the early stance phase, but overshot its prediction
during the late stance phase. The over prediction of the tibiofemoral load was due to the extended
activity of the gastrocnemius and the rectus femoris. The laboratory was able to modify the activity of
these two muscles to increase resemblance with in vivo measurements. The laboratory was also able to
identify distinct changes in muscle activity that could decrease tibiofemoral load. A decrease in
activation of the rectus femoris and gastrocnemius and an increase in activation of the soleus, gluteus
medium and uniarticular hip flexors can decrease the tibiofemoral forces during late

The Battle Of Quebec And The British Army
The Battle of Quebec took place on 13 September 1759. This battle was part of the French and Indian
War between the French Army and the British Army. The French Indian war was the North American
front of the Seven Years War, which was fought on the European continent and on the Indian
subcontinent. The outcome of the Battle Of Quebec would prove pivotal in determining who would
control Canada. The British exhibited successful tactics in deception, exploited false assumptions,
took audacious actions, and benefited from unity of effort. The French suffered due to a lack of
standardization between regular army and militia members, which led to an embarrassing defeat at
Quebec. Events leading to the Battle Many European empires began serious colonization efforts of
North America in the1500 s. The main colonizers of North America were the French, Spanish and
British. The British colonization efforts were concentrated along the east coast of America, while the
French began their colonization in Canada. Sieur de La Salle, a French explorer, traveled down the
Mississippi river to the Gulf of Mexico in the mid 1500s. France claimed ownership of everything
from the Appalachian Mountains to the Rockies (Davis). France now had two major colonies
consisting of Canada, and Louisiana as well as control of overland trade routes connecting the two
colonies. In 1754 colonial growth forced the English to expand west of the Appalachians. This
expansion resulted in rising tension

So disillusioned with Catholicism, he would go on to nail his thesis to the door of, All Saints Church

Protestantism was to be fully embraced by England and Wales with the ascension of Elizabeth I on

Gene Technology Is The Basic Physical And Functional Unit...
Introduction: A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity and can be used in gene
technology processes. Gene technology refers the range of activities concerned with understanding
gene expression, taking advantage of natural genetic variation, modifying genes and transferring genes
to new hosts. A specific example of gene technology is Gene Therapy. This term refers to the process
of introducing DNA into a patient to treat a genetic disease. The new DNA contains a functioning
gene to correct the effects of a disease causing mutation (YG, 2016). There are several techniques for
carrying out gene therapy, these include, gene augmentation, gene inhibition and the killing off of
specific cells.
Augmentation: Gene augmentation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The process aims to introduce a gene whose product either inhibits or interferes with the expression of
another gene. This therapy facilitates the elimination of the growth of disease related cells (YG, 2016).
Killing of specific cells suicide : This process is suitable for diseases which can be treated by
destroying certain groups of cells. The aim is to insert DNA into a diseased cell which causes the cell
to die. This can be achieved by inserting DNA containing a suicide gene that produces a highly toxic
product to kill the diseased cell or by inserting DNA which causes the expression of a protein which
marks the cells so that the diseased cells are attacked by the body s immune system. This method must
be targeted appropriately to avoid the death of normal functioning cells and would be appropriate to
use on a disease such as cancer (YG, 2016).
Currently, possible candidates for gene therapy include cancer, AIDS, cystic fibrosis, Parkinson s and
Alzheimer s diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cardiovascular disease and arthritis (AMA, 2016).
This article aims to examine how gene therapy can be used on patients with cystic fibrosis as well as
evaluate the various ethical concerns that surround it.
Cystic fibrosis: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary disease caused by mutations of the CFTR gene.
The mutations cause cell proteins that channel chloride ions and water out of

Essay on A Near Death Experience as a Religious Experience
A Near Death Experience as a Religious Experience
A near death experience can be defined as an event which occurs to people when seemingly the bodily
functions which confirm life have stopped, (i.e. clinically dead). It often has an out of body element
and may be interrupted in a religious or non religious way. Most individuals who claim to have had a
near death experience say that there is a sense of indescribable bliss, ecstasy and peace. Similarly, a
religious experience is usually described as a non empirical occurrence, and may be perceived as
supernatural. It is a mental event which is undergone by an individual and of which that person is

Moreover, it could also be explained in physiological terms; where an individual could have a body
illness, or the brain being deprived of oxygen. These could distort their image of the world leading to
them not obtaining a real picture of what s going on, and hence making them think they are
undergoing a divine experience, whether religious or near death. It could also be the result of affects in
neurological terms (involving the nervous system). The brain could be affected by nerves and how
they are working. This could also be in connection with common diseases such as Parkinson s,
Multiple Sclerosis and other, whereby they affect the individual s brain and what they perceive.
I tried to tell my nurses what had happened when I woke up, but they told me not to talk about it, that I
was just imagining things. (An individual who claims to have had a near death experience)
These experiences could also be psychological, where an individual feels a sense of isolation. Dreams
and delusions could also be a reason. For example, in times of ultimate stress, it tightens sensitivity
and stress release endorphins could cause visions. A near death experience can be purely

Soybean is the third largest oilseed crop in India next to Groundnut Mustard and accounts for 25% of
the total oilseeds produced in the country in a year. Soya oil contributes about 10% of total vegetable

The Juuxtaposition Between The Greek And The Panathenaic...
Greece is a country full of the juxtaposition between the classic and the new. In Athens, cars, busses
and motorcycles fill the winding streets lined with statues of antiquity. Modern museums full of
ancient artifacts rest under the Acropolis. The Parthenon, as ancient as it is, is under construction, with
large cranes and scaffolding surrounding it. While there is a conflict between the classic and modern,
the new often looks to the ancient for inspiration, which can easily be seen when comparing the
ancient Olympic Games to the modern Olympic Games, as well as when looking at the history of the
Panathenaic Stadium.
The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. Athletes from 14 countries competed
in 43 events. Of these events, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One myth on the origins of the Games state that Zeus stated the Olympics to commemorate his defeat
of Kronos. In actuality first Games were held during a festival to honor Zeus (Cartwright, 2013). The
revival of the Olympics in 1896 can be seen as a way to honor ancient Greece and ancient Greek
traditions. Both times the Games were motivated by giving honor to what was important, in one case,
a god, in the other, ancient tradition. Another similarity between the ancient and the modern Games is
the reason for competing. In both cases, winning the games means bringing glory and fame to oneself,
as well as one s home, in ancient times, one s city, modern, one s country. Another striking similarity
is the presence of opening ceremonies. During the modern Games, the host country puts on the
opening ceremony which according to Olympic protocol includes a cultural show and ends with a
procession of all competing athletes by country, and the lighting of the Olympic Torch. During the
procession of athletes, according to tradition the Greek team is always first, followed by the rest in
alphabetical order according to the host country s language, while the host country s team is last. The
opening ceremonies of the ancient Games involved a procession from Elis to Olympia, led by the
judges, and upon arrival, all involved parties swore an oath to follow all rules and compete with honor
and respect (Cartwright,

Drawing Of Colorado River And The Grand Canyon
This piece was inspired by a photograph that I took when I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon
with my dad and my sister. This is a drawing of the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon, hence the
name Canyon and Colorado. I used the history of drawing landscapes to create this piece; I wanted to
draw the Grand Canyon s base with the Colorado not at the rim. When people started to explore
America, they had to bring back the king drawings, sketches, objects, and/or descriptions from their
exploration. Usually, they would enhance their picture or description more than it really was, so that
king would be excited and happy for what they found, and so they would be paid to go back and
explore more. I wanted to replicate what explorers

Comparing Aristotle And John Stuart Mill
Chelsea Kearney
PHIL 231: Ethics
28 April 2015
Essay 2
Comparisons on Pleasure in Morality
The role of pleasure in morality has been examined thoroughly throughout the beginning of
philosophy and continues to be a questionable issue. With these in depth examinations, some similar
outlooks as well as differing views have been recorded. Many philosophers have dissected this
important topic, however I intend to concentrate of the famous works of Aristotle, Immanuel Kant,
and John Stuart Mill. After meticulously analyzing each of the above philosophers texts, I personally
prefer the position of utilitarian and Benthamite, John Stuart Mill. After comparing and contrasting the
positions and reasonings of these philosophers, I will demonstrate my own reasons why I have chosen
John Stuart Mill as the most established in his theory of the role of pleasure in morality.
Aristotle was a particularly influential Grecian philosopher and student of Plato who lived from
384BC 322BC (ADD CITATION). Within Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle outlines the thoughts of the
general population along with his regards and rationales in explaining many philosophical premises.
But to concentrate on how Aristotle feels about the role of pleasure in morality, Aristotle introduces
the idea that most people think happiness involves pleasure. He goes on to interpret the roles of
different pleasures and their virtues and vices, giving examples such as as bodily pleasures and soul
pleasures.

The Dramatic Impact of Act 1 Scene 3 in Shakespeare s...
The Dramatic Impact of Act 1 Scene 3 in Shakespeare s Othello and Its Importance to the Whole Play
Othello is a tragic play by Shakespeare, set in Venice during the Elizabethan time. It portrays the
growth of unjustified jealousy in the noble protagonist, Othello, a Moor serving as a general in the
Venetian army. The innocent object of his jealousy is his wife, Desdemona. In this domestic tragedy,
Othello s evil lieutenant Iago draws him into mistaken jealousy in order to ruin him. Othello is
destroyed partly through his gullibility and willingness to trust Iago and partly through the
manipulations of this villain, who clearly enjoys the exercise of evildoing just as he hates the spectacle

The main action that occurs at the beginning of this scene is the meeting between the Duke and the
senators of Venice, in the council chambers. Council meetings are usually held during the day; but the
fact that it is night time now, makes the audience think that the topic of this meeting is so important
that the council members cannot wait till it is morning to discuss it. This strategy used by Shakespeare
motivates the audience to focus on the scene.
The purpose of this meeting is to decide the future of one of the Venetian colonies, Cyprus. Cyprus is
a trading island, where merchants from all over the world come to trade and therefore Cyprus has
become the target of the Turkish fleet to conquer, as Turkey has an interest in Cyprus s wealth in this
meeting. It is to be decided what the Venetian s will do to protect their colony from the imminent
attack of the Turkish fleet. The Turks are non Christians and therefore considered to be malevolent
during the era, and anybody who s not white and a Christian, were always associated with evil.
Shakespeare subtly introduces the theme of racial discrimination on the grounds of religiously.

Media Role Models and the Effect on Children
Media construct our culture, and the media we use to communicate with one another shapes our
perception of reality. Our society is centered on media, it is the most influential factor in constructing
our culture, but is it a positive culture? If we examine the effect that media has on children, we can say
that it breeds a harmful culture, one that throws values and morals out the window. This is because the
media is profit driven and has developed its own code of ethics of anything goes . As a result, children
are exposed to things that they should not necessarily be exposed to yet and as a result it rushes their
mental development and in fact moulds their mentality. This is a scary fact because these children s
minds are susceptible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another example we could look at is Britney Spears, young girls who like Britney Spears think that
she is ‘cool and thus they strive to be just like her, and this involves acting like Britney and more
importantly buying Britney Spears products such as her clothing. So in conclusion these media
personalities are popular among children and idolized by them because they are promoted as being
cool and for a child to be cool they must be just like them, which involves buying their products.
These media personalities are in essence products themselves that the media bodies try to sell to
children on the basis of ‘cool , and once they can be sold to the children as being cool, their entire
franchise benefits because their image can create the demand for all products with their likeness.
Now let s look at the effect that these media personalities have on children in the age group 5 and
under. We assume that children are safe watching educational programming such as Blue s Clues ,
Dora the explorer and Teletubbies , but are they really as safe as we think they are. First off, these
types of television shows are educational and do in fact teach young children while keeping them
entertained. This can be seen as a positive influence on our kids and these characters as being positive

Descriptive Essay On Basketball
Entering the gym resonates an immediate feeling of dedication. Double glass doors open, making an
odd creak that only those two doors are able to make. The sound of these doors opening brings a chill
down the spine. Once the gym is entered, there is a large brown trashcan that hides in the corner, like a
child that has done something wrong and is hiding from his or her parent. Its orange bag loves to poke
out past the can itself like a baby kangaroos head from its mothers pouch. Two black ball holding
racks lean against the wall. Each rack has three rows that hold five basketballs per row. The metallic
feeling to these racks are very cold and intense to the touch. Life is a basketball, constantly bouncing
up and down. All of the great basketball players used one common tool to keep life more on the upside
of the metaphor, a basketball. Michael Jordan. LeBron James. Tim Duncan. Like they all used, the
basketballs on this rack are exactly identical. Deep Tangerine Men s basketballs, that have a light
yellowish tint to them. Majestic stripes swirl around the balls as like the markings on a zebra. The bar
codes on the basketballs are all whited out so that people cannot take and resell the balls. Jimmy Floyd

like a mother duck protects her ducklings. Unlike most gyms, the Floyd has an unusual blue plastic
floor. Hardwood is the normal choice for basketball gyms.

My Day Of High School Essay
It had been a busy Friday. I came home from a long day of high school, and I was so excited because
for once I didn t have a basketball practice. On top of that, I had plans to go on a date, I was always so
busy that I never went on dates. This wasn t just an ordinary date though this just so happened to be
the most popular guy in school . I was very excited, but after school all that I wanted to do was go
home, get a snack, lay down on the couch, prop my feet up, and relax for a while. Maybe even take a
nap before I got ready for my date. I did just that. I got home, skipped the snack because mom was
making dinner, laid on the couch, and was slowly drifting into a nap when all of a sudden I heard a big
bang, crash, and then silence. I jumped up, and ran to the kitchen. There was my mother lying on the
floor, with hot grease burning her, and food all over the floor she had just cleaned earlier that day. I
helped her up, and took her to the bedroom where I proceeded to help her clean up, putt burn ointment
on, and told her, just relax mom, I ll take care of it. She just sat there so ashamed. This was a normal
occurrence; my mom falling. But this time there just seemed to be something a little bit different about
it. Usually mom won t relax, and she ll keep going. I examined my mother walking to the other room.
Her walk worse than usual. I had a lump in my throat as I asked, Could I examine your ankle, and leg?
She said, I guess. But I am fine. I rolled up her pant leg,

Analysis Of The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down By...
Anne Fadiman s novel The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down depicts the colliding worlds of the
Western and Hmong culture in an effort to save the life of a little girl, who is diagnosed with epilepsy.
The novel tells two different, but interwoven, stories in which one from the point of view of Lia s
parents, and another from the point of view of health care providers. Both Lia s parents and health
care providers want the best for Lia Lee, but due to a lack of understanding and cultural barriers, result
in the tragedy of Lia. This article explains how anthropological concepts are applied into the novel,
and how themes of culture and cultural misunderstanding impacted Lia s parents and the health care
providers resulting in a tragedy.

Adjusting to the Hmong s new homeland has not been easy for them. Traditional Hmong beliefs
regarding healing and curing of disease differ greatly from those of the Western culture. Western
medicine relies heavily on a medical process in which a specific technique corrects a specific problem
by treatment. Health is the absence of disease and measures the individual s adaptation to an
environment. On the other hand, Hmong believe illness is associated with spiritual causes. For
instance, when Lia was three month ago, she had an epileptic seizure in which Lia s mother Foua, and
her father, Nao Kao, called the episode the spirit catches you and you fall down (Fadiman, 1997,
p.20). According to Lia s parents, it was a spiritual illness which Lia s soul had fled out of her body
(Fadiman, 1997, p. 21). On the other hand, Dr. Dan Murphy, who practiced Western medicine,
diagnosed Lia Lee with epilepsy. The Ethnocentrism is the judging of other cultures by the standards
of one s own culture (Miller, Esterik, Esterik, 2004, p. 11). Therefore, all other ways of doing things
are considered inferior and unnatural. For instances, when Dr. Neil Ernst expressed that he felt it was
important for the Hmong to understand that there were certain elements of medicine and that the
doctors understood better than the Hmong did (Fadiman, 1997, p.79). Dr. Ernst wanted the community
to know if the Hmong deviated from the norm of society; it was consider not an acceptable behavior
(Fadiman, 1997, p.79). This statement shows how American doctors thought they had a better
understanding of the needs of children rather than the parents. Although the physicians truly cared
about Lia, it is their frustrations that magnified the cultural barriers, which prevented the Hmong from
collaborating with the physicians in restoring Lia s deteriorating

It is true that sentencing is not like baking a cake; you cannot lay down in advance, for every case, the
exact ingredients and proportions, the exact temperature required... In sentencing, courts are not
dealing with standards and ingredients but with an infinite variety of offences, offenders and
situations. Nevertheless, there ought to be some definite criteria to decide the sentence. Taking a lead
in this direction, the Federal Authorities in U.S.A. established sentencing Institutes in 1957 to impart
some sort of training for magistrates in matters of sentencing. Sentencing Councils are also set up in
USA to discuss the problem of sentencing and adopting a uniform policy on judicial sentencing. In
England, vigorous efforts have been made by Lord Chief Justice ever since 1970 to ascertain definite
principles of sentencing. The length of the prison sentence is usually commensurate with the
seriousness of the offence as provided under the Criminal Justice Act, 1991. S.2(2) of the Act further
empowers the court to imprison a person convicted of a violent or sexual offence for longer than the
seriousness of the case requires, but not exceeding the maximum in any case. Another Act passed by
the British Parliament, namely, the Crime (Sentences) Act, 1997 has removed the provision of
remission from the penal code. In order to provide safeguard against the arbitrary use of judicial
discretion, efforts are being made to introduce computerized sentencing system ever since

Rhetorical Analysis Of John Berger s Ways Of Seeing
Rhetorical Analysis Essay
In John Berger s essay Ways of Seeing, he shares his view on how he feels art is seen. Mr. Berger
explores how the views of people are original and how art is seen very differently. By comparing
certain photographs, he goes on to let his Audience, which is represented as the academic, witness for
themselves how art may come across as something specific and it can mean something completely
different depending on who is studying the art. The author goes into details of why images were first
used, how we used to analyze art vs how we do today, and the rarity of arts. He is able to effectively
pass on his message by using the strategies of Rhetoric, which include Logos, Pathos, and Ethos.
Mr. Berger uses Pathos close to the beginning of his essay to get the attention of his audience. To get
an emotion started that would make anyone want to know and read further. Where he writes In this
respect, images are more precise and richer than literature. (121) For anyone who may be passionate
about literature may disagree, it would cause an emotion. An emotion that would cause someone to
want a better understanding. He is using this strategy to get the audience interested, engaged, and to be
able to have an emotional tie to the subject. He explains how images have been around to make up for
what was absent. Words are words and mean what we read from them. Anyone can read a book
explaining how life was in the past, and an image can give a different story.

desires are not fulfilled. New home, new man and new experience for her was like wonderland. She
was unable to understand the situation in which she was being trapped. Silent, constant, still,
perplexed and talking to her indistinctly her words faded in the dusk of agony. She endeavors to
discover her individuality by seeking refuge in dreams, fairy tales and fantasies to escape the sordid
reality of her existence. At an age where the typical fantasy would be a Sultan or prince coming on
horseback, Rani s flight of the imagination transports her to a seventh heaven where her parents wait
for her. For the woman, the home is said be an expression of her freedom: it is her domain. However,
Rani is imprisoned in her own house by her spouse in a routine manner that baffles others with the
door locked from the outside. She is confined within the doors of seclusion where her body and mind
collapses in the waves of confinement, violence, regulation and communication of the victimized
gender self . She suffers silently in helplessness. Being sandwiched between the four walls of

  • 2. Analysis Of Eric Erikson s Eight Stages Of Identity Theory Introduction Identity or Self concept is something that evolves or matures right along with us; it changes from physical concepts to more complex thoughts. (Damon Hart, 1988) Questions like Who am I? and What is my Purpose? Have perplexed humanities greatest philosophers; the complexity of these questions has even created a study of purpose; Teleology, the study of purpose. John Locke held that personal identity is a matter of psychological continuity. He considered the self to be founded on consciousness and not on the substance of either the soul or the body. (Nimbalkar, 2011) Eric Erikson s theoretical perspective of identity Eric Erikson s theoretical perspective of identity perspective built on Freud s work proposed that people ... Industry vs. Inferiority As children continue through the stages, they become increasingly aware of themselves as individuals. Children who achieve and are praised for their achievements develop self confidence. Children who are constantly criticized may develop feelings of inferiority. 5. Identity vs. Role Confusion Erikson argued that teenagers undergo an identity crisis which they must establish. Adolescents who struggle to find a purpose to their lives and a separate identity from their parents may be unable to establish one. 6. Intimacy vs. Isolation After a young person has established his or her identity, Erikson proposes that a person now is able to establish intimate relationships with others. Failure to do so can result in long term feelings of isolation. 7. Generativity vs. Stagnation People who can provide guidance to their children can feel a sense of purpose. Those who cannot resolute this stage will stagnate and have a difficult time achieving the next stage. 8. Ego Integrity vs. Despair This stage deals with reflection of the life a person has lived. If the previous stages have been met, then a person can die content. • 5. Interpreter Of Maladies Analysis The literary fiction The Interpreter of Maladies gives us insight on the human condition which tells us as readers that communication is important but it is often of human nature to misinterpret the interactions. After Ms. Das called his job as an interpreter romantic , Mr. Kapasi developed a fantasy where Mrs. Das is the perfect companion who would reveal the disappointment of her marriage, and he in his. (92). The quote explains the misinterpretation because of Mr. Kapasi s relationship with his wife who had little regard for his career as an interpreter. (90). Unlike Mrs. Kapasi, Mrs. das shows some interest in Mr. Kapasi s occupation which makes Mr. Kapasi believe that it could more than a fabricated fantasy, which cannot really happen, mainly because Mr. ... Mrs. Das Was tired of feeling so terrible all the time and hoping you[Mr. Kapasi] could help me feel better, say the right thing. (99). However, Mr. Das doesn t think that he should help her because he felt insulted that Mrs. Das should ask him to interpret her common, trivial little secret. (99). Both characters illustrate misinterpretation because Mr. Kapasi thought of Mrs. Das a romantic companion, but Mrs. Das assumed Mr. Kapasi as someone who could help her with her problem because he worked as an interpreter. A last example of misinterpretation in communication is shown when Mr. Kapasi obliges to Mrs. Das request and the answer he gives asks if what Mrs. Das felt was really pain or if it was just guilt. It s Mrs. Das who demonstrates the misinterpretation when she glared at Mr. Kapasi....opened the car door and began walking up the path (99). • 6. John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men And Our Day Out In this essay I am going to compare and contrast the theme of social deprivation in Of Mice and Men and Our Day Out. John Steinbeck, writer of Of Mice and Men lived in California in 1930 s and the novel was written in the time of the Great Depression in America. As a result the people were in poverty. The reason why there was a great depression was unemployment and stock market crash. The novel is about two itinerant workers having a dream about buying a farm. Social deprivation was conspicuous during this time in America and also suffering from economic decline which is exemplified through George and Lennie, who are looking their own place to live. On the other hand, in Our Day Out the play was written in 1970s in Liverpool. During this time Liverpool s economy was also falling because there was high unemployment. Willy Russell illustrates this through poverty through Carol on the play. Steinbeck shows In Of Mice and Men that the character George and Lennie are penniless. For example, it says Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don t belong no place This shows us that they are poor because they work on the farm and George says that we don t have any families or a place to live. This link to the Great Depression in America because people were in poverty and unemployment, so it is very difficult to get money. Similarly, in Our Day Out we know the children are very poor. For example, it says Ronny, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Military Commissions Act of 2006 How Should Detainees Be... Guantanamo Bay in Cuba houses some of the most dangerous people. The people being held have ranged in committing various crimes. What makes Guantanamo Bay well known is how the time period a detainee has spent in prison without a trial. While in prison for an extensive period of time, a detainee is bound to receive discipline for not following the guards. There are often a variety of different methods that the guards use to teach discipline to the detainees. All who follow Guantanamo Bay as institution often criticizes the measures taken. What makes Guantanamo Bay an ironic place to start this journey is because Guantanamo Bay is at the center of attention to a very important, controversial law passed in 2006. The controversial law was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By passing the Military Commissions Act of 2006, the person in control of all decisions would be the President. They also gave the president absolute power to designate enemy combatants, and to set his own definitions for torture (Military Commissions). If someone were to identify the players who were deemed responsible for this act to pass, that someone would most likely identify President Bush and Congress. These central figures wanted to take the extra step in keeping the United States protected from any additional acts of terrorism. With what is stated in the Military Commissions Act of 2006 and those who stressed for the passage of the act, mixed messages are sent. President Bush, at the time, believed in less harm and more protection for the United States due to the extenuating circumstances. By creating a law that gives the President absolute authority and leaving no room for improvement, how was the United States going to look like? What it going to be looked at as a weak country with no control of power? The other player involved, Congress, was weak on its part. By allowing this act to pass with authority give to the President, this law was interpreted as unconstitutional and violated the rights of the judicial branch and ultimately the supreme law of the land, The Constitution. • 8. Government Over Regulation Of The United States Camille Nelson Kline Honors English 10 10 April 2017 Government Over Regulation The United States has slowly conformed to the new ways of the Western policy of democratic socialism in order to achieve equality in the eyes of the law, but with this the necessary regulatory compliance of all citizens must be provided. If all American citizens do agree to abide by the rules implemented by the United States, the freedom that they came here for would be nonexistent, and they would no longer have the ability to truly live the infamous American dream . The economy is also beginning to move away from the capitalist ways and move toward an ideology of equality among the wealth and incomes of the people, and the only apparent way to achieve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves (Tanner 1). Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize winner, Chief Economist at Roosevelt Institute, best selling author, and a professor at Columbia University explains the problems with the current economy in the United States in his book Rewriting the Rules of the American Economy. He explains that even though the one percent of the United States population is living a prosperous life, the remaining ninety nine percent are being hurt by this reality (Stiglitz 8). From this it can be concluded that the regulations currently being pressed upon the majority of the population are hurting more than benefitting. Capitalism is defined as an economic and political system in which a country s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state (Oxford Dictionary 1). There has been a longing to find a balance between this and socialism. The laissez faire is the commonly known economic idea of a government refraining from interfering in the free market in order to allow the people to control their own means of production and selling of goods. This seems to be ruined by the over regulation of the economy by the government because much of the US economic benefits rely on the free market. Also, capitalism allows for people to voluntarily take part in making their own wealth. Without this, competition among businesses would be gone and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Novel The New Atlantis By Ursula K. Le Guin The short story The New Atlantis paints a picture of a dystopian United States, where the government has become an overwhelming force. The people living in the States are left in a state of neglect, where harsh administration and forced ideals are the norm. Ursula K. Le Guin s story follows Belle, a woman who leaves her memoirs to the rising oceans that are swallowing up the continent. Belle s story records the struggle of a person s life under the suffocating government, with her husband Simon attempting to gain political strength through his scientific vision. The themes of the story are based on a damning critique of the direction that humanity along with science and technology have taken under capitalism (Maxwell 15). With its heavy hand, civilization has consumed itself with conflict and consumption. By the end of the story, the United States has completely collapsed into the ocean, collapsed under the weight of its own government. The story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas , also by Ursula K. Le Guin, tells the tale of an idealistic city called Omelas. Shoshana Knapp illustrates the lives of Omelas as a complex moral problem: The basic situation . . . is the promise of mass bliss in exchange for a unique torment (par. 5). When children become young adults in Omelas, they are shown a morbid truth about their society the basis of Omelas whole existence relies on the suffering of one lonely child locked in a room. • 10. Qualities of a Strong Teenage Girl Qualities of a Strong Teenage Girl Being a teenage girl, I know what it is like to be let down, put down, and feel completely alone. But I also know what it takes to get back up, be courageous, and fight. One quality a teenage girl must have is courage. Courage to stand up for yourself and others. To succeed, a teenage girl must have smarts. Street smarts as well as book smarts are important. However, one quality that most teenage girls have is a carelessly open heart; letting anyone in that tries. These qualities of a teenage girl may lead her to heartbreak and emotional struggles, but overall can contribute to a successful life. The first quality an adolescent girl must have to succeed, is courage. One reason for this quality is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She may do this because she wants to feel loved and needed. This leads to my second reason which is the motivation of her partner. He may be looking to take advantage of her and wishes to leave her heartbroken. When the partner realizes the girl s despiration, he feels a position of power and can further take advantage of her; body and soul. Through my experience, I hear how girls can be taken advantage of, and move from partner to partner as a reaction. Avoiding a broken heart can be accomplished by having a strong heart that is selective and strives for mutual and balanced commitment. A final reason for a teenage girl to be cautious with her heart is in connection to her self worth. When a girl gets her heart broken, she may feel intense loneliness, or she may look quickly for someone else to love and care for in order to avoid or fill the void of emotional pain. She may start feeling negatively about herself and her body and believe she will never be good enough. This poor self image can lead to severe depression and self harm. Many times, this heartache happens because a girl lets someone into her life without boundaries, or standards and once she realize this, she can feel defeated. For these reasons, having an open heart without using intelligence is a dangerous combination for a teenage girl. As you can see by the reasons above, teenage girls must have intelligence and courage to be successful. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Life Without Passion And Enthusiasm Scares Me The only way to do great work is to do what you love. If you haven t found it yet, keep looking. Don t settle. warned Steve Jobs, in his Stanford commencement speech in 2005. I hear these words echo in my ears from time to time. The thought of living a life without passion and enthusiasm scares me. We all have had to do things that didn t interest us at times, but I look at each day as a new opportunity to get closer to my ultimate goal. As a kid, I enjoyed being the performer, the artist. I am not that bad of a performer, I might add. But as I grew up, I found myself more involved in discovering artists and talking about them. It took me a while to realize my genuine interest in making a career in this industry and differentiate it from just a mere hobby. With no family background in the field, it was difficult to enter the industry and study its dynamics. When I was introduced to blogging, I made it my starting point to learn about the entertainment industry. With a bachelor s degree in commerce and an MBA in marketing, I had germane knowledge about the field. I put my marketing class techniques to practical use. I was promoting city events and taking interviews of some local and international artists. I started networking in the industry and got myself an internship with one of India s top notch indie record label and artist management firms, Only Much Louder. From my experience as an intern, and my participation in projects, I learnt about client servicing, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Dupot Pipeline Tragedy The horrible tragedy at the DuPont Chemical Plant in La Porte, Texas, which ended in four innocent people losing their lives, began roughly 5 days prior to the accident. It was November 10, 2014, when a reactor in the plants Lannate unit, an insecticide DuPont produces for many agricultural purposes, went down for an unscheduled maintenance. Lannate is produced by reacting toxic methyl mercaptan with other chemicals. Two days later on November 12th, after all the up keep was taken care of on the reactor, they tried to start it up again. They were unsuccessful in starting up the reactor, and further investigation revealed a slurry blocking any passage through the pipelines which lead to the reactor. However, slurries were a very common thing during shutdowns. They form when methyl mercaptan reacts with other stagnate chemicals in the pipeline, forming a blockage. To clear this slurry, operators began pumping hot water through the piping to try and break it up. By noon on November 13th, operators deemed they had cleared the slurry. During the hot water pumping, a valve was accidentally left opened, which allowed roughly 2,000 pounds of water to flow into the methyl mercaptan feedline and storage tank. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They decided to run hot water directly over top of the section of piping where the blockage was located to try and bring the temperature up to 52°F to melt the methyl mercaptan hydrate. They would use pressure indicators along the piping to identify where the hydrate was as it began to move along the piping. However, when they began this process, they closed a valve that would have allowed methyl mercaptan to flow from the storage tank and into the shutdown reactor unit. These forces can have a negative impact on the development, health and maintenance of the cartilage and meniscus in that joint (and increased load on the knees and the tibiofemoral joint can result in osteoarthritis). The tibiofemoral load is varied depending on the muscle coordination patterns. The laboratory created a musculoskeletal model of subject to analyze the tibiofemoral load, and an optimization framework to calculate the load from muscle coordination. Using the model and optimization framework, the laboratory was able to understand the impact of different muscle coordination on the tibiofemoral load. The laboratory was able to precisely predict tibiofemoral forces when compared to in vivo measurements during the early stance phase, but overshot its prediction during the late stance phase. The over prediction of the tibiofemoral load was due to the extended activity of the gastrocnemius and the rectus femoris. The laboratory was able to modify the activity of these two muscles to increase resemblance with in vivo measurements. The laboratory was also able to identify distinct changes in muscle activity that could decrease tibiofemoral load. A decrease in activation of the rectus femoris and gastrocnemius and an increase in activation of the soleus, gluteus medium and uniarticular hip flexors can decrease the tibiofemoral forces during late ... • 14. The Battle Of Quebec And The British Army The Battle of Quebec took place on 13 September 1759. This battle was part of the French and Indian War between the French Army and the British Army. The French Indian war was the North American front of the Seven Years War, which was fought on the European continent and on the Indian subcontinent. The outcome of the Battle Of Quebec would prove pivotal in determining who would control Canada. The British exhibited successful tactics in deception, exploited false assumptions, took audacious actions, and benefited from unity of effort. The French suffered due to a lack of standardization between regular army and militia members, which led to an embarrassing defeat at Quebec. Events leading to the Battle Many European empires began serious colonization efforts of North America in the1500 s. The main colonizers of North America were the French, Spanish and British. The British colonization efforts were concentrated along the east coast of America, while the French began their colonization in Canada. Sieur de La Salle, a French explorer, traveled down the Mississippi river to the Gulf of Mexico in the mid 1500s. France claimed ownership of everything from the Appalachian Mountains to the Rockies (Davis). France now had two major colonies consisting of Canada, and Louisiana as well as control of overland trade routes connecting the two colonies. The aim is to insert DNA into a diseased cell which causes the cell to die. This can be achieved by inserting DNA containing a suicide gene that produces a highly toxic product to kill the diseased cell or by inserting DNA which causes the expression of a protein which marks the cells so that the diseased cells are attacked by the body s immune system. This method must be targeted appropriately to avoid the death of normal functioning cells and would be appropriate to use on a disease such as cancer (YG, 2016). Currently, possible candidates for gene therapy include cancer, AIDS, cystic fibrosis, Parkinson s and Alzheimer s diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cardiovascular disease and arthritis (AMA, 2016). In Athens, cars, busses and motorcycles fill the winding streets lined with statues of antiquity. Modern museums full of ancient artifacts rest under the Acropolis. The Parthenon, as ancient as it is, is under construction, with large cranes and scaffolding surrounding it. While there is a conflict between the classic and modern, the new often looks to the ancient for inspiration, which can easily be seen when comparing the ancient Olympic Games to the modern Olympic Games, as well as when looking at the history of the Panathenaic Stadium. Both times the Games were motivated by giving honor to what was important, in one case, a god, in the other, ancient tradition. Another similarity between the ancient and the modern Games is the reason for competing. In both cases, winning the games means bringing glory and fame to oneself, as well as one s home, in ancient times, one s city, modern, one s country. Another striking similarity is the presence of opening ceremonies. During the modern Games, the host country puts on the opening ceremony which according to Olympic protocol includes a cultural show and ends with a procession of all competing athletes by country, and the lighting of the Olympic Torch. During the procession of athletes, according to tradition the Greek team is always first, followed by the rest in alphabetical order according to the host country s language, while the host country s team is last. Comparing Aristotle And John Stuart Mill Chelsea Kearney PHIL 231: Ethics 28 April 2015 Essay 2 Comparisons on Pleasure in Morality The role of pleasure in morality has been examined thoroughly throughout the beginning of philosophy and continues to be a questionable issue. With these in depth examinations, some similar outlooks as well as differing views have been recorded. Many philosophers have dissected this important topic, however I intend to concentrate of the famous works of Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, and John Stuart Mill. After meticulously analyzing each of the above philosophers texts, I personally prefer the position of utilitarian and Benthamite, John Stuart Mill. After comparing and contrasting the positions and reasonings of these philosophers, I will demonstrate my own reasons why I have chosen John Stuart Mill as the most established in his theory of the role of pleasure in morality. Aristotle was a particularly influential Grecian philosopher and student of Plato who lived from 384BC 322BC (ADD CITATION). Within Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle outlines the thoughts of the general population along with his regards and rationales in explaining many philosophical premises. But to concentrate on how Aristotle feels about the role of pleasure in morality, Aristotle introduces the idea that most people think happiness involves pleasure. He goes on to interpret the roles of different pleasures and their virtues and vices, giving examples such as as bodily pleasures and soul pleasures. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Western medicine relies heavily on a medical process in which a specific technique corrects a specific problem by treatment. Health is the absence of disease and measures the individual s adaptation to an environment. On the other hand, Hmong believe illness is associated with spiritual causes. For instance, when Lia was three month ago, she had an epileptic seizure in which Lia s mother Foua, and her father, Nao Kao, called the episode the spirit catches you and you fall down (Fadiman, 1997, p.20). According to Lia s parents, it was a spiritual illness which Lia s soul had fled out of her body (Fadiman, 1997, p. 21). Dr. Ernst wanted the community to know if the Hmong deviated from the norm of society; it was consider not an acceptable behavior (Fadiman, 1997, p.79).
