Summary Of Surprise By Jane Kenyon
Psychoanalysis can be inscribed in many poems subliminally. Authors tend to use psychoanalysis to
solve the concern of a psychological issue or dysfunction problem that they have encountered. It is the
conscious awareness of not knowing what the problem is that gives it so much control of our
destructive behavior. As human beings, we often repress our deepest fears, emotions and experiences
that tend to unfurl in the future beyond our control. Until we can acknowledge and openly admit to
ourselves the cause of this, we will continue to disguise the problems unconsciously. It benefits our
mental state for a certain length of time, but we ultimately suffer from it in the end. In her poem,
Surprise, Jane Kenyon utilizes fear of betrayal, the double and being forced into a regressive state that
creates her fear to be intimate. In the poem, Surprise, Kenyon displays psychoanalysis by revealing
the fear of betrayal through the main characters feelings. The female speaker in the poem unfolds her
repressed feelings about her past experiences that now currently torments her mental state. She
explains the kind suggestions of a man, such as dining together for pancakes and taking a stroll
through a field of mayflowers. To her knowledge he offers her a morning of happiness, and an
opportunity to spend quality time with this man who could possibly become a significant lover. At this
point in the poem, she does not conclude more than a casual date with this man seeing that he only
offers that much to her. She is unaware of his intent to surprise her and this is what causes her fear of
being betrayed. Though this is normally an act of kindness, she receives it as a symbol of deception.
He leads her to believe that he wants to spend time with her, when in reality he is hiding his actual
intent. This subtle dishonesty reveals the repressed feelings she unconsciously has due to past
experiences and therefore twists this kind gesture into a feeling of betrayal. This feeling then provokes
her fear to be intimate with him, or in general. Kenyon establishes the state of the double through the
role of the male character. The male in this poem is presumed as a kind, pleasant fellow who wants to
please this woman and make her

Essay Question
What does the author want us to think of in the theme of survival in The Enemy and The Knife of
never letting go?
This piece of writing will consist of two different authors who wrote two different books. The author
of young adult novel, The Knife of Never Letting Go, goes by the name of Patrick Ness which he
published on May 2008. Ness was born on October 17, 1971. He is an American born British author,
journalist, and lecturer who lives in London. The Knife of Never Letting Go is about Todd Hewitt who
is the only boy left in Prentisstown, a small settlement on New World where all boys become men at
the age of 13 when on earth he is 14. He begins the novel oblivious to Prentiss Town s history, ...

In The Knife of Never Letting Go Aaron is in constant pursuit of Todd and his friends. Aaron ends up
stabbing Todd, and kidnaps Viola. After gaining consciousness, Todd rescues Viola, by choosing to
sacrifice his dog Manchee. The pair both escape on a boat. In this sudden incident, the author shows
survival can causes the reader to be on the fence. Ness has gradually built up the relationship Todd has
with his dog but chose a girl who he barely knows to save. It was one or the other, but the captivity of
Viola would be better for Aaron. And Aaron wrenches his arms and there s a CRACK and a scream
and a cut off yelp that tears my heart in two forever and forever . The author wants the reader to think
about how impossible decisions have to be made for the greater good and to survive. This incident is
somewhat similar as Small Sam being captured by grown ups from The

The Two Component Stressors
Introduction
Bacteria are prone to various stressors so they need to sense and respond to these fluctuating
conditions in order to survive. Two component plays an important role in the bacterial kingdom to
sense and adapt themselves to these varieties of stressors, for example oxidative stress, protein
misfolding, nutrient starvation and many more. It is first described by Ninfa and Magasanik (1986) in
the study of nitrogen starvation in Escherichia coli. Two component system consists of a sensor
histidine kinase and its cognate response regulator (Koretke,K.K. 2000). Sensor histidine kinase is
bifunctional which means it can function as both kinase and phosphatase. It autophosphorylates itself
upon sensing a signal, whereby the phosphoryl group from ATP molecule is transferred to a specific
histine residue on the histidine kinase. It then acts as phosphodonor substrate for its cognate response
regulator. The cognate response regulators is acting as phosphatase to the histidine kinase as it
catalyses the transfer of the phosphoryl group from histidine kinase to its conserved aspartic acid
residue. Once phosphorylated, response regulator undergoes conformational change which activates
the output domain leading to either stimulation or repression of the targeted genes. As mentioned
earlier on, histidine kinase protein also acts as phosphatase for its cognate response regulator if it is
not stimulated to autophosphorylate.
This system has vast variations and the common

Complementarian Versus Egalitarian Theology
Complementarian vs. Egalitarian Theology and Beliefs
Christian views, attitudes and beliefs about gender have always varied with some ideas evolving with
society and others set in tradition, never to change. While some see gender difference as a feminist
issue, others see it as a role requirement set by God. Of course, there are extremists on both sides of
this argument, as well as inter lapping beliefs, but gender issues are still debated by Biblical scholars
often and passionately. Not exclusive to denomination, gender equality is a subject that can be
examined in many ways, but the focus of this paper will be on two types of theologies,
Complementarian and Egalitarian. While both theologies rely on Bible scripture to gain and prove
their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This view can also be referred to as biblical equality. Egalitarians feel that Bible teaches Christians
equality both genders within all racial and ethnic groups, economic classes, and age groups based on
the example and teachings of Jesus Christ.
Egalitarian theology interprets scripture with the inference that the teachings of Jesus Christ, through
the Apostle Paul, ended gender specific roles for both genders with regards to the church, ministry and
in marriage. This view explains that God calls each of us to roles within the church with no regard to
race, gender or class. Egalitarians feel that each person should have equal responsibility to use their
talents to follow their calling in order to glorify God, without limitations or rights that are based on
gender. Under this theology, leadership or control in the Church or in the home should not be based on
gender or be male dominated. Egalitarian theory stresses the importance of the Bible teaching
individuals the equality of both genders in the creation and redemption. Nevertheless, in the Lord
woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as woman came from man,
so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. (1 Corinthians 11:11 12 NIV). There

A Textbook Example Of What s Wrong Summary
Paulo Freire starts out referring to the Fundamentally narrative character (Freire 1) of education.
Loewen starts introduction with high school students hate history (Loewen, 1). At first blush, one
wouldn t think the two had much in common. Perhaps, they don t have that much in common, but they
do have a common complaint. They both have a dislike for what Freire calls the Banking method of
education. Freire defines it as the teacher s task to fill the students with the contents of his narration
(Freire, 2). Freire might have been a wild eyed radical, but he was more or less on point with his
narration complaint. Loewen similarly has issues with the manner in which History is taught, in
particular, he takes great pains to describe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are, literally, volumes written just about the politics of textbooks. The true depth of the chaos is
too much to go into here. Loewen only scratches the surface when he describes the boondoggle that is
the school textbook in his introduction. In an article titled A Textbook Example of What s Wrong with
Education, Tamim Ansary takes it a step further. He describes in detail what Loewen only lightly
touched on. It s real inside baseball type stuff, or probably more accurately described as how the
sausage is made. He describes the biggest issue as ensuring that the books are necessarily bland to
ensure that they will offend no one on the left or right. There are activists groups on both sides of the
political spectrum that do little more than dig through proposed textbooks looking for things to find
objectionable (Ansary). Of course, one mustn t forget the fact that money is always a factor. Texas, a
big fish where textbooks are concerned, spends approx. $42 billion on public schools and there is a
specific amount allocated in adoption years for just textbooks (Ansary). Too much truth can get in the
way of business. It s not about the most accurate or the most interesting textbooks, but rather about
being as inoffensive as possible to the most people. With a model like that, there isn t any real chance
that textbooks will improve any time

The Importance Of Christian Beliefs
Everyone is entitled to having their own beliefs. In healthcare, we can have our own beliefs but, we
must respect others beliefs and respond accordingly. There are many religions but, I chose to focus on
Christianity. A Christian is someone who believes in the teachings of Jesus Christ. In the Christian
faith, there are many denominations, groups with different views, on what the teachings of Jesus
Christ mean. I chose to focus on the two specific groups who have strong opinions on how they are
treated. I am a strong believer in patient education and the patients right to refuse treatment.
Christian Science In the denomination of Christian science, they strongly believe in the power of
prayer. This is a common belief for Christians, but they take it a step further. For these believers, the
best way, sometimes the only way, to be healed is by prayer. You can use aides like crutches or canes
because they aren t changing you. If you are in this culture and you feel that you must go to a doctor,
you would have to go to the Christian science doctor. Most of the time, they will only do this for
urgent situations or children that aren t healing fast enough. I am a firm believer in the power of prayer
but, I also believe that medicine is sometimes necessary. As a healthcare provider, I don t imagine that
I will ever treat anyone who believes this way because I wouldn t be able to practice with their doctor.
I am sure if they did decide to get medical treatment at a

A Girl Like Her Character Analysis
Imagine you are being bullied by your old best friend. She starts bullying you when you block your
test paper from her sight. Now everyday becomes a living nightmare and after a while you can t
handle the teasing and the names. Even your house is not safe due to the dangers of social media and
cyberbullying. This is the reality of Jessica in A Girl Like Her when the truth is told in the form of a
video to Jessica s former friend and bully, Avery. A Girl Like Her is a good movie that raises
awareness for suicide and bullying. The reasons why I believe that is because its shows many point of
views, how vital it is to have programs in school to provide counseling, and to make teens aware that
their everyday words can cost someone their life. Others ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A Girl Like Her shows the bullying done by Avery through a camera lens and what happens in Avery s
house through another camera lens. For example, according to theodysseyonline it says, the difference
between A Girl Like Her and other movies about bullying is that you see both sides to bullying: the
bully and the person being bullied. That means that in the movie it shows you what both the bully and
the victim have to go through. The author is trying to show the feelings of both roles: the bully and the
victim. Another reason why A Girl Like Her has so many point of views is because every character has
their own life story and way of seeing things so it would make sense to show each individual
characters point of view. For example it says in theodysseyonline, this movie allows you to understand
the reason for the bullying through the bullier eyes, and the true side of how a family feels when their
loved one thought suicide was the answer. The author is suggesting that if you want to learn the full
story you need many pov s to shape your understanding. That brings me to the conclusion that more
than one point of view helps you understand the characters story and learn about bullying. All in all,
this is how showing more than one perspective helps raise awareness for bullying and with suicide

Steven Johnson Watching Tv Makes You Smarter Analysis
In Steven Johnson s persuasive essay Watching Tv Makes You Smarter, he defies what our culture
teaches us about television. Our society teaches that television is making our youth dumb and that our
culture enjoys the simple pleasures so that is what the media companies are feeding us with. But,
Johnson states that based on what the show 24 suggests, the exact opposite is happening: the culture is
getting more cognitively demanding, not less (1). The growing interest of TV programs with complex
mental faculties involves three primary elements: multiple threading, flashing arrows and social
networks (2). Multi threading in the media world began in 1981 with the arrival of the show Hill

Classical feudalism, which developed in and after

the fief was the

Honors or rights, as

renewal of the
fief by the heir of the deceased became customary, and little by little the fief became hereditary. The

World Myhtology The Golden Guide Analysis
To me, this passage just emphasizes the point that we all have distinctive outlooks on things. There is
a Spanish proverb that my mom used to say to me that reminds me of that Cada Cabeza es un mundo (
each mind is a world unto itself). Therefore, just because we see something in a particular way, does
not mean that everyone else see it in the same way. To illustrate, recently I went to the Metropolitan
Art museum with my friend, we walked all over, but I stop and admire a beautiful abstract painting of
Pablo Picasso, to me it was such an experienced like the painting was transmitting something to me, I
was able to feel and perceived something. However, my friend passed by the painting without even
noticing and simply did not call his attention. I believe that I saw something that made me emote so It
was my reality. However, reality can be deceiving and you can create your own illusion. In our World

Decades has passed since U.S. and China established formal diplomatic relations. The two countries

moved to a new stage of complex mix of diplomatic issues, differences in values, and increasingly
intertwined economy. If the U.S. and China to improve their achievements made in the past, then the

Despite she fact she acknowledges that both countries can gain from cooperation in security, energy,
economic issues; U.S. s self interests comes first. As China advocates for more international
involvement, open market policies, territorial assurance from the U.S., the U.S. on the other hand
strives to maintain its position in global leadership and interest because it still considers China as a
threat, trying to seize China to prevent it from gaining excessive international power. In the following,
I will first analyze the similarities and differences between the two speeches, point out U.S. and China
s problematic intentions that cause diplomatic challenges, and argue about why it is crucial for the
U.S. to keep interfere with China s diplomatic situations. To defend my position, I will examine China
and the U.S. s take on the South China Sea dispute, which has risen up to be a major flashpoint for
conflicts in Asia after the Cold War.

Racial Inequality In The NFL
For many, speaking up for what you believe in can be difficult and risky, but ultimately worth the risk.
Colin Kaepernick took this risk, by kneeling during the national anthem to stand up against police
brutality and the inequality that people of color (NFL). With many unjust shootings and police
beatings of African Americans, Kaepernick s teammate Eric Reid couldn t stand the violence anymore
after the killing of Alton Sterling in my hometown Baton Rouge, La (Reid). Reid joined Kaepernick in
taking a knee during the national anthem, in doing this Kaepernick and Reid inspired other players to
raise awareness and help those in need. This decision caused huge impacts on the nation, the NFL, and
the youth who look up to the players of the NFL. Racial inequality will always be a huge topic in the
United States of America, and continues today to still be a huge topic. With the NFL players raising
awareness by kneeling and locking arms together during the national anthem, the topic of racial
inequality has gained more interest. After Kaepernick in 2016 first kneeled many other athletes and
stars joined the movement to talk about the problems of racial inequality. People like Ellen
DeGeneres, Zendaya, George Lopez, and many others voice their support for the players (JustJared).

Compare And Contrast The Duality Of Science And Religion
The Duality of Religion and Science
Science is the process which discovers knowledge, knowledge in turn is power, and power is said to
bring about corruption. Therefore, through the transitive property, that implies that science will only
lead to corruption. Not necessarily a corruption of one s actions; for instance, science won t make a
politician accept a bribe. However, some would argue that science will lead to a degradation of
morals. For example, contemporary science may lead to a woman viewing her unborn baby as naught
but a ball of cells, similar to a tumor, which can be removed from her body with no moral dilemma.
The converse to this is the impediment of science due to humanity clinging to its archaic values. This
can be shown by the opposition to stem cell research and genetically modified embryos in the name of
morals and the inviolability of life. The stark contrast between following morals and advancing
science creates a juxtaposition that often manifests itself as a debate between religion and science.
Certain members of both the scientific and religious communities blindly adhere to their own opinions
and ideals. This butting of heads helps no one. As a result, a middle road must be found, one in which
neither progress nor morality are ignored. The polarity between these two forces is encapsulated by
the differences that Bertolt Brecht draws in his play Galileo between Galileo and the clergymen. This
play, when contrasted with the reality of Galileo s

Rhetorical Analysis The article We Are Training Our Kids to Kill by David Grossman is an attempt at
explaining the effect of mass media on our children as far as violence and the impacting role it plays.
Grossman, a self entitled world traveler and an expert in the field of killology uses the rhetorical
aspects of ethos, pathos, and logos to get his point across. Regardless of the fact that Grossman did
build some credibility for himself, used reasoning, emotion, and some facts to support his opinion, he
did not use them in a very effective way. I am going to label this article as ineffective. The first reason
I m ruling Grossman s writing as ineffective is because he seemed to contradict himself throughout his

After Goldman makes this statement he doesn t go on to talk about the restrictions that parents or our
society in general have or should have on movies, video games, or other forms of media. My third and
final reason to show how Grossman s article is ineffective is that for a lot of the examples he used, he
had no legitimate proof or substance to support them, or make a connection to his arguments. One of
Grossman s statements that has no proof providing justification is In reality, the average man would
load his musket and bring it to his shoulder, but he could not bring himself to kill. He would be brave,
he would stand shoulder to shoulder, he would do what he was trained to do; but at the moment of
truth, he could not bring himself to pull the trigger. Here Grossman is talking about soldiers in the
Civil War. This statement was all assumed. There was no journal, or historian quoted, or any other
credible knowledge suppressed to support this. The author talks like he knows the military realities
and that may be the case, but I m sure that common sense can tell the reader that Grossman does not
have the knowledge to have this information in his article without substance behind it. The military
realities that the author knows are much more modern and contemporary than those of the Civil War.
Times change and so does the military along with it. Over all,

Cultural And Religious Beliefs And Beliefs
Family is something that makes people what they are and supports them in every difficult situation.
Cultural and religious beliefs often dictate family structures, and the beliefs of those cultures and
religions, especially regarding genders, are then reflected in power dynamics. This happens because
cultures manipulate people s perspective of viewing genders because of their religious beliefs. Some
families are shaped according to this belief that men are more important and the boys in a family get
more privileges and more attention than the girls. Different cultures and their beliefs make the boys
and the men look more powerful and cause the girls to think that they are inferior to the boys.
In Hmong and in many other households, boys are seen as more important. They are the ones who will
carry the family traditions and name to next generation. Girls are seen as someone else s property as
they will get married and go to someone else s family and will carry their name and be a part of that
family. Girls since childhood are taught that the house they were born in and are raised in is not their
actual house. Their house will be where their husband lives. In Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down,
Anne Fadiman wrote about how a girl s placenta is buried under her parent s bed. However, a boy s
placenta is buried near the base of the house s central wooden pillar because in this pillar a male spirit
who is a domestic guardian, held the roof up. That pillar is a great place of

Honor In The Once And Future King
From the days of chivalry and knighthood, to modern times in which recognitions such as the medal
of honor are given, to possess the complex perception of one s peers containing honor is highly sought
after. Honor is not a materialistic item that can be bought or obtained, but rather must be earned and
recognized by the aspects of one s character and actions. For nearly all people in the past in the days
of chivalry as well as select individuals in modern society, honor is the driving force behind every
action, and is the one true virtue that defies their character and mindset. For a man to be honorable,
one must uphold the human conscience, and in a society focused merely on individualization and

Many knights such as Lancelot strived to act in accordance with the guidelines set forth by chivalry
and perform only with the notion that others are watching one s every move. The basis of the plot and
the forthcoming events that had taken place were of a great majority affected by honor and chivalry.
The novel s plot follows directly behind the aspects of honor and the character s determination to meet
the standards and recognition that honor entails, and also follows the characters that ignore the
obsession for honor and how it shapes their character. Gawaine is a character in the novel who does
not follow the guidelines of chivalry, and is rather disgusted by honor and the mindset that honorable
people follow. Gawaine does not follow the universal sense of right or wrong, yet rather follows the
instinct that enables his brawn and fighting to shape his character (White 166). The unhonorable
characters such as Gawaine and numerous others as well as the characters containing the aspects of
honor allow for the novel s plot to be established and develop in accordance to the actions of the
characters. Honor is portrayed in the novel as an essential aspect of life and ultimately the sole driving
force of the actions and mindset of characters which provides an undertone for the entirety of the

Noel Ignatiev s How The Irish Became White
Centered around the Antebellum era, Noel Ignatiev s How the Irish Became White took place during
the height of Irish immigration to the United States, where millions crossed the Atlantic in search of
economic prosperity and other central pillars of the American Dream. However, Ignatiev asserts that
those traditional American values were originally inaccessible for the newly arrived Irish immigrants.
Shown by the virulent opposition toward immigration, Ignatiev highlights how the growing fear of
foreign intrusion and ethnic tensions threatened to rape the superfluity of many Irish immigrants and
their opportunity to uncover prosperity and freedom in America. Not only did How the Irish Became
White uncover the brutal oppression and widespread xenophobic sentiments towards the Irish, it also
shows how they eventually gain a level of economic opportunity by cultivating a scene of whiteness
that embodied contemporary American values and briefs. In the book, Ignatiev demonstrates how Irish

While the riot originally began as an anti draft protest, it quickly grew into a political campaign and
racial warfare against black laborers. Along with racial slurs and torching homes of poor African
Americans , the Irish also lynched colored orphans and racially mixed couples (New York Times). The

Gus DiCesar, the Hilltop County sheriff, proposed the trustees to be taken out from jail 6 days a week.
He also asked for a truck for taking the prisoners to roadsides to clean the county s roadways from
trash and debris.
The prisoners would wear the regular jailhouse uniforms. The road crew would consist of 8 or 10
inmates guarded by two armed officers. This was required to prevent them from escaping.
Corrections officers will screen the inmates. The high risk prisoners would not be selected as the road
crews.
DiCesare said that all the trusties will be serving sentences of less than a year, and their sentence

The prisoners would be paid 25 cents an hour compare to the other jails and prisoners with a dollar an
hour. Four days of their sentence will be taken for each month they work in return.
The Sheriff added that there was easy to find volunteers. Most of the inmates wanted to work so that
they could get out from the prison faster. The prisoners that inside the jail were helping with the

The money for paying the prisoners salaries was already budgeted in the Sheriff s Departments annual

In addition, he supported it because the low labor cost that could save the money on his department

Dawkins stated that he would increase the inmates and provide more trucks if the program was
popular and successful.

Kino s physical and spiritual existence is intimately connected with the natural world. An important
element of the novella is nature imagery. Kino observes the world of his garden in the opening scene
of Chapter 1 and the world of the ocean in Chapter 2. Kino and Juana s final journey up the mountain
takes place on a dark night full of animal noises and cries. Steinbeck mirrors the human word as he
depicts the natural world as a realm. Collectively, the works of Steinbeck s nature imagery parallels
the natural worlds idyllic innocence to that of Kino s at the beginning of the novella. The natural
world described in the novella s darker qualities, at the end of story, reflect that of the struggle and
fight Kino experiences at the novellas end, once greed, power and wealth had corrupted his soul. For
example there was a parallel created between Kino s relationship to nature and the god s relationship
to Kino (he towers over the ants in the same way that the gods tower over

Roaring Twenties Advancements

widespread prosperity in the 1920 s. Know as the Roaring Twenties, because of its distinctive cultural

a truly unique time period especially in medical practices. Life expectancy was greatly improved and
the 20 s contributed many breakthroughs in medicine that we take for granted today. The Roaring

Why Engineers And Software Developers For Google
Driverless Vehicles Cars represent a considerable part of people s everyday life. They are used to visit
ancestors or colleagues; many need them for work or getting to school faster. However drivers need
loads of concentration and accidents are caused as a result of distraction. That is why engineers and
software developers for Google, Volvo and other companies, have been working on driverless vehicles
for the last years. They are designed to make lives easier in a bunch of ways. While they provide a
new kind of functionality, they operate different than cars that need a motorist. Whereas the new
possibilities they present are not all known yet, it is a certainty that they will also cause problems that
did not exist before. The only fact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is caused mostly by the fact that driverless cars require a new and different kind of technology to
work properly. After all, they are supposed to provide safety for the humans in them and at the same
time are making almost all the decisions a driver usually makes. In the beginning, it will be obvious to
everybody which car needs a car handler and which does not without even looking at the driver s seat.
The cameras and sensors will clearly tell them apart. But as time passes by the technology and design
will advance and flow together in a more appealing way. This improvement will also benefit other
aspects of life, as every new invention also is a new thought provoking impulse. Nevertheless the
technology is not only on the outside of the cars it is also on the inside. The software driverless cars
are using can be used as a base for other communication systems or might be improved by those. As in
many other systems the key [...] is Big Data the mounds of information flowing in and out of your
vehicle (Muller), therefore those cars work like daily life communication, and send each other their
current location, their speed or other important information that might concern the other car. As this
system has to improve to provide more safety it could not only be adapted in daily life again and make
it cheaper, it is also improving the efficiency. Still, people might say that those cars will not be

Welfare Causes Poverty in America Essay
There seems to be an increase in poverty in the United States and there are so many theories behind
why this might be a problem. It seems as if Society as a whole wants to blame this social condition on
Society itself. I believe that the problem of poverty lies within the actual individuals that are
experiencing poverty. There are a few reasons why people experience poverty. They are as follows:
One, the liberal welfare programs that were started in the 1960 s, two, individuals lack the
characteristic of power and individuality, three, anti social behavior and the idea that poverty passes
from one generation to the next. The liberal welfare programs were started in the 1960s to help
individuals obtain better job skills by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems as if they were unable to say no to the provided or shall I say free support and unable to say
yes to the ability to gain and be able to support their selves. It was so much easier to have someone to
do it for them. Not only did they lack integrity but they lacked the power and confidence needed to
make it on their own. These individuals knew that the government has been and will continue to
support them so they became even lazier. These individuals became lazy and began to involve
themselves with only individuals of the sort, which developed into anti social behavior. Once the anti
social behavior sets in we can t train these individuals to assimilate into society, we can t train these
people to be like you and me. We can t train these people to be normal. I classify normal as someone
who is willing to support or at least try to support themselves on a regular basis. If I can work to
support me, my family and you why can t you work to support you , this includes your family also.
Children are indeed a product of their environment.
Being a product of your environment can be a good thing or it can be a bad thing depending on your
environment. In the eyes of poverty I do believe that it is a bad thing because poverty seems to be
passed on from generation to generation. You can t expect the next generation to be any better than the
last when they aren t able

How Did Epicurus Contribute To The Good Life
Epicurus believed that the idea of pleasure was important but had to restrained. He contributed to
modern hedonism. He created the garden a sort of ancient Utopia that he used as a base for his
teachings and claimed that all were welcome but must reject their old lives and society. His guide to
the good life included the use and creation of Tetrapharmakos, which had four points that people
should live by to attain the good life. These included, God is nothing to fear, one if Epicurus biggest
idea was in his riddle, if god is so powerful and willing to help others, then why does evil exist? And if
is not so powerful and is not willing then why are they called gods and why are they worshipped?

The Lion and the Ox Essay
Omar Malas AAPTIS 381 Professor Legassick Kalila wa Dimna The Lion and the Ox is a one of the
oldest and most popular pieces of classic Arabic literature. Originally from India, this animal fable is
famous for its inclusion of many other animal fables, each of which help provide the characters of the
story with advice regarding their situation. Unlike The Arabian Nights, which also uses a frame tale
that contains each tale, multiple animals share their wisdom with one another. The wisdom of the story
s two main characters, Kalila and Dimna, help foreshadow and motivate the events of the frame tale
and bring it to a reasonable yet tragic conclusion. Kalila, one of the two main jackals of the frame tale,
is living in the court of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Approaching Kalila after this initial failure, Dimna explains his new plan to destroy the ox using a
parable within a parable: the story of the heron and the crab within the story of the raven and the
snake. A snake has made it a habit of eating the raven s eggs every time one is laid. The raven
complains to it to stop, but to no avail. When the raven complains to the jackal of its problem and how
it hopes to solve the problem by clawing the snakes eyes out, the jackal tells her the parable of the
heron and the crab. Briefly, the old heron uses the innocent crab to trick the fish by claiming that the
fishermen are coming to wipe them out and that he can help them by each day carrying them to a pool
where they will be safe. The fish agree to the heron s trick. The heron carries a few fish away each
day, but as soon as he is out of the sight of the other fish, he eats them. One day when the crab wants
to be taken to the pool, he sees all the fish bones and realizes what has been happening. The crab then
attacks the heron, pinching its throat and killing it. The moral to this story, explains the jackal, is
sometimes people destroy themselves by their own craft and cunning if they are not careful (Arberry
92). This story helps foreshadows the fact that there is great risk for Dimna if he tries to destroy the
ox, but that this risk is worth the effort as long as he doesn t become too invested. Upon hearing this
parable,

Maggie A Girl Of The Street
Race and gender are topics that are examined not matter what the writing style. Naturalist and realist
writers work is no different in that aspect. However I feel that they way naturalist writers create and
write their female characters. I find that most of the female characters are treated as the weaker sex
within naturalist works. It also is clear that in naturalist works the gender roles are not strictly
enforced. If we take a look at The Yellow Wall Paper and Maggie a Girl of the Streets we can see
many examples of this.
Charlotte Perkins Gilman s short story The Yellow Wallpaper, we as the reader is given an intimate
look at the narrators developing insanity. The reader is treated to an intimate portrait of developing
insanity. The story ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later when our narrator finally takes control of her own thoughts we get the true picture of who her
husband is. We no longer see him in a protective, strong leader and husband. Instead we find the role
to be reversed, and we can even see him behaving much like a woman.
Within Maggie tale, which is very much a realist work, we can see the same treatment of women.
Specifically within Maggie s own life. Once her family has discovered that she has slept with Pete she
is shunned, and thrown away. Maggie while not oppressed by one specific person, or the social forces
that are out of her control oppress event like Gilman s narrator is still oppressed .
Both tales tell of a women who is unhappy, unable to escape, and deeply oppressed. I do not think that
women are treated or portrayed any different in either style of writing. Women in general during this
time period are consider to be weak, mild, and meek creatures. They are considered disposable and we
can see that in both of these women. They dream of better lives and want to escape, however they do
not have the means, or the power to do so. The only difference between the two is the Gilman s story,
which is a naturalist work, allows for more freedom with the gender roles and gender role reversal.
However over all realist or naturalist women are oppressed by men and their

State Instability in Somalia: Islamic Extremism Insurgency
Historical Amnesia is a dangerous phenomenon, not only because it undermines moral
and intellectual integrity, but also because it lays the groundwork for crimes that lie ahead.

It is nearly impossible to pick up a copy of the New York Times or The Washington Post or turn on
CNN and not see scenes of the humanitarian crisis, gangs, piracy, insurgency, and civil war regarding
the deteriorating situation in Somalia splashed all over the pages. Due to increased piracy attacks,

The rise of Militant Islam in Somalia occurred in the mid 1990 s with the alliance of a group of
Muslim legal scholars, clan leaders and business men operating in piracy, who comprised four primary
sects of leadership, based upon clan and regional affiliation. These four sects merged to form the
Supreme Islamic Courts Council (SICC), and operated with success until it was defeated in 2006 by
Transnational Federal Government. The SICC broke apart resulting in splinter terrorist organizations
which are now tied to the present rise in piracy off the coast of Somalia. Dissentions among these
groups are wide spread.
Now that an analysis have been provided with a background of research regarding the composition
and reason for militant groups, the research will focus on the case study to test whether these theories
modelled remain true within a radical group itself. To reiterate, the conflict analysis will focus on a
discussion of the dynamics and origins of the group power, group identity and group purpose, and
societal effects of the group. These findings will discuss the role of Islamic extremism, funding by
piracy, clan based fighting, and governmental factors which influenced the fall of the Somali state.
Let s begin by answering the first question of the composition and structural dynamic of the group.
The group we will focus on is Somalia s largest and most powerful insurgency group, called Al

  • 2. Summary Of Surprise By Jane Kenyon Psychoanalysis can be inscribed in many poems subliminally. Authors tend to use psychoanalysis to solve the concern of a psychological issue or dysfunction problem that they have encountered. It is the conscious awareness of not knowing what the problem is that gives it so much control of our destructive behavior. As human beings, we often repress our deepest fears, emotions and experiences that tend to unfurl in the future beyond our control. Until we can acknowledge and openly admit to ourselves the cause of this, we will continue to disguise the problems unconsciously. It benefits our mental state for a certain length of time, but we ultimately suffer from it in the end. In her poem, Surprise, Jane Kenyon utilizes fear of betrayal, the double and being forced into a regressive state that creates her fear to be intimate. In the poem, Surprise, Kenyon displays psychoanalysis by revealing the fear of betrayal through the main characters feelings. The female speaker in the poem unfolds her repressed feelings about her past experiences that now currently torments her mental state. She explains the kind suggestions of a man, such as dining together for pancakes and taking a stroll through a field of mayflowers. To her knowledge he offers her a morning of happiness, and an opportunity to spend quality time with this man who could possibly become a significant lover. At this point in the poem, she does not conclude more than a casual date with this man seeing that he only offers that much to her. She is unaware of his intent to surprise her and this is what causes her fear of being betrayed. Though this is normally an act of kindness, she receives it as a symbol of deception. He leads her to believe that he wants to spend time with her, when in reality he is hiding his actual intent. This subtle dishonesty reveals the repressed feelings she unconsciously has due to past experiences and therefore twists this kind gesture into a feeling of betrayal. This feeling then provokes her fear to be intimate with him, or in general. Kenyon establishes the state of the double through the role of the male character. The male in this poem is presumed as a kind, pleasant fellow who wants to please this woman and make her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Similarities Between The Enemy And The Knife Of Never... Irfan 10E Comparative Essay Essay Question What does the author want us to think of in the theme of survival in The Enemy and The Knife of never letting go? This piece of writing will consist of two different authors who wrote two different books. The author of young adult novel, The Knife of Never Letting Go, goes by the name of Patrick Ness which he published on May 2008. Ness was born on October 17, 1971. He is an American born British author, journalist, and lecturer who lives in London. The Knife of Never Letting Go is about Todd Hewitt who is the only boy left in Prentisstown, a small settlement on New World where all boys become men at the age of 13 when on earth he is 14. He begins the novel oblivious to Prentiss Town s history, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Knife of Never Letting Go Aaron is in constant pursuit of Todd and his friends. Aaron ends up stabbing Todd, and kidnaps Viola. After gaining consciousness, Todd rescues Viola, by choosing to sacrifice his dog Manchee. The pair both escape on a boat. In this sudden incident, the author shows survival can causes the reader to be on the fence. Ness has gradually built up the relationship Todd has with his dog but chose a girl who he barely knows to save. It was one or the other, but the captivity of Viola would be better for Aaron. And Aaron wrenches his arms and there s a CRACK and a scream and a cut off yelp that tears my heart in two forever and forever . The author wants the reader to think about how impossible decisions have to be made for the greater good and to survive. • 4. The Two Component Stressors Introduction Bacteria are prone to various stressors so they need to sense and respond to these fluctuating conditions in order to survive. Two component plays an important role in the bacterial kingdom to sense and adapt themselves to these varieties of stressors, for example oxidative stress, protein misfolding, nutrient starvation and many more. It is first described by Ninfa and Magasanik (1986) in the study of nitrogen starvation in Escherichia coli. Two component system consists of a sensor histidine kinase and its cognate response regulator (Koretke,K.K. 2000). Sensor histidine kinase is bifunctional which means it can function as both kinase and phosphatase. It autophosphorylates itself upon sensing a signal, whereby the phosphoryl group from ATP molecule is transferred to a specific histine residue on the histidine kinase. It then acts as phosphodonor substrate for its cognate response regulator. The cognate response regulators is acting as phosphatase to the histidine kinase as it catalyses the transfer of the phosphoryl group from histidine kinase to its conserved aspartic acid residue. Once phosphorylated, response regulator undergoes conformational change which activates the output domain leading to either stimulation or repression of the targeted genes. As mentioned earlier on, histidine kinase protein also acts as phosphatase for its cognate response regulator if it is not stimulated to autophosphorylate. This system has vast variations and the common ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Complementarian Versus Egalitarian Theology Complementarian vs. Egalitarian Theology and Beliefs Christian views, attitudes and beliefs about gender have always varied with some ideas evolving with society and others set in tradition, never to change. While some see gender difference as a feminist issue, others see it as a role requirement set by God. Of course, there are extremists on both sides of this argument, as well as inter lapping beliefs, but gender issues are still debated by Biblical scholars often and passionately. Not exclusive to denomination, gender equality is a subject that can be examined in many ways, but the focus of this paper will be on two types of theologies, Complementarian and Egalitarian. While both theologies rely on Bible scripture to gain and prove their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This view can also be referred to as biblical equality. Egalitarians feel that Bible teaches Christians equality both genders within all racial and ethnic groups, economic classes, and age groups based on the example and teachings of Jesus Christ. Egalitarian theology interprets scripture with the inference that the teachings of Jesus Christ, through the Apostle Paul, ended gender specific roles for both genders with regards to the church, ministry and in marriage. This view explains that God calls each of us to roles within the church with no regard to race, gender or class. Egalitarians feel that each person should have equal responsibility to use their talents to follow their calling in order to glorify God, without limitations or rights that are based on gender. Under this theology, leadership or control in the Church or in the home should not be based on gender or be male dominated. Egalitarian theory stresses the importance of the Bible teaching individuals the equality of both genders in the creation and redemption. Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. • 7. A Textbook Example Of What s Wrong Summary Paulo Freire starts out referring to the Fundamentally narrative character (Freire 1) of education. Loewen starts introduction with high school students hate history (Loewen, 1). At first blush, one wouldn t think the two had much in common. Perhaps, they don t have that much in common, but they do have a common complaint. They both have a dislike for what Freire calls the Banking method of education. Freire defines it as the teacher s task to fill the students with the contents of his narration (Freire, 2). Freire might have been a wild eyed radical, but he was more or less on point with his narration complaint. Loewen similarly has issues with the manner in which History is taught, in particular, he takes great pains to describe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are, literally, volumes written just about the politics of textbooks. The true depth of the chaos is too much to go into here. Loewen only scratches the surface when he describes the boondoggle that is the school textbook in his introduction. In an article titled A Textbook Example of What s Wrong with Education, Tamim Ansary takes it a step further. He describes in detail what Loewen only lightly touched on. It s real inside baseball type stuff, or probably more accurately described as how the sausage is made. He describes the biggest issue as ensuring that the books are necessarily bland to ensure that they will offend no one on the left or right. There are activists groups on both sides of the political spectrum that do little more than dig through proposed textbooks looking for things to find objectionable (Ansary). Of course, one mustn t forget the fact that money is always a factor. Texas, a big fish where textbooks are concerned, spends approx. $42 billion on public schools and there is a specific amount allocated in adoption years for just textbooks (Ansary). Too much truth can get in the way of business. It s not about the most accurate or the most interesting textbooks, but rather about being as inoffensive as possible to the most people. With a model like that, there isn t any real chance that textbooks will improve any time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Importance Of Christian Beliefs Everyone is entitled to having their own beliefs. In healthcare, we can have our own beliefs but, we must respect others beliefs and respond accordingly. There are many religions but, I chose to focus on Christianity. A Christian is someone who believes in the teachings of Jesus Christ. In the Christian faith, there are many denominations, groups with different views, on what the teachings of Jesus Christ mean. I chose to focus on the two specific groups who have strong opinions on how they are treated. I am a strong believer in patient education and the patients right to refuse treatment. Christian Science In the denomination of Christian science, they strongly believe in the power of prayer. This is a common belief for Christians, but they take it a step further. For these believers, the best way, sometimes the only way, to be healed is by prayer. You can use aides like crutches or canes because they aren t changing you. If you are in this culture and you feel that you must go to a doctor, you would have to go to the Christian science doctor. Most of the time, they will only do this for urgent situations or children that aren t healing fast enough. I am a firm believer in the power of prayer but, I also believe that medicine is sometimes necessary. As a healthcare provider, I don t imagine that I will ever treat anyone who believes this way because I wouldn t be able to practice with their doctor. I am sure if they did decide to get medical treatment at a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is the reality of Jessica in A Girl Like Her when the truth is told in the form of a video to Jessica s former friend and bully, Avery. A Girl Like Her is a good movie that raises awareness for suicide and bullying. For example, according to theodysseyonline it says, the difference between A Girl Like Her and other movies about bullying is that you see both sides to bullying: the bully and the person being bullied. That means that in the movie it shows you what both the bully and the victim have to go through. The author is trying to show the feelings of both roles: the bully and the victim. Another reason why A Girl Like Her has so many point of views is because every character has their own life story and way of seeing things so it would make sense to show each individual characters point of view. For example it says in theodysseyonline, this movie allows you to understand the reason for the bullying through the bullier eyes, and the true side of how a family feels when their loved one thought suicide was the answer. The author is suggesting that if you want to learn the full story you need many pov s to shape your understanding. That brings me to the conclusion that more than one point of view helps you understand the characters story and learn about bullying. All in all, this is how showing more than one perspective helps raise awareness for bullying and with suicide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Our society teaches that television is making our youth dumb and that our culture enjoys the simple pleasures so that is what the media companies are feeding us with. But, Johnson states that based on what the show 24 suggests, the exact opposite is happening: the culture is getting more cognitively demanding, not less (1). Classical feudalism, which developed in and after the 10th century. It was only toward the year 1000 that the term fief began to be used instead of benefice. Feudalism was a contractual system of political and military relationships. It was characterized by giving someone fiefs in return of politcal or military services. The feudal method of holding land was by fief; the grantor of the fief was the suzerain, or overlord, and the recipient was the vassal. This formal procedure served to cement the personal relationship between lord and vassal; after the ceremony the lord invested the vassal with the fief, usually by giving him some symbol of the transferred land. There is a Spanish proverb that my mom used to say to me that reminds me of that Cada Cabeza es un mundo ( each mind is a world unto itself). Therefore, just because we see something in a particular way, does not mean that everyone else see it in the same way. To illustrate, recently I went to the Metropolitan Art museum with my friend, we walked all over, but I stop and admire a beautiful abstract painting of Pablo Picasso, to me it was such an experienced like the painting was transmitting something to me, I was able to feel and perceived something. However, my friend passed by the painting without even noticing and simply did not call his attention. I believe that I saw something that made me emote so It was my reality. However, reality can be deceiving and you can create your own illusion. In our World Myhtology The Illustrated Guide, the author Willis related the popular myth in which narrates the story of the Gods trying to acquired the Amrita or the elixir of immortality. The Churning of the ocean begins with the Gods reunion at the Mount Meru to suggested best to obtain the Amrita. With many unjust shootings and police beatings of African Americans, Kaepernick s teammate Eric Reid couldn t stand the violence anymore after the killing of Alton Sterling in my hometown Baton Rouge, La (Reid). Compare And Contrast The Duality Of Science And Religion The Duality of Religion and Science Science is the process which discovers knowledge, knowledge in turn is power, and power is said to bring about corruption. Therefore, through the transitive property, that implies that science will only lead to corruption. Not necessarily a corruption of one s actions; for instance, science won t make a politician accept a bribe. However, some would argue that science will lead to a degradation of morals. For example, contemporary science may lead to a woman viewing her unborn baby as naught but a ball of cells, similar to a tumor, which can be removed from her body with no moral dilemma. The converse to this is the impediment of science due to humanity clinging to its archaic values. This can be shown by the opposition to stem cell research and genetically modified embryos in the name of morals and the inviolability of life. The stark contrast between following morals and advancing science creates a juxtaposition that often manifests itself as a debate between religion and science. Certain members of both the scientific and religious communities blindly adhere to their own opinions and ideals. This butting of heads helps no one. As a result, a middle road must be found, one in which neither progress nor morality are ignored. The polarity between these two forces is encapsulated by the differences that Bertolt Brecht draws in his play Galileo between Galileo and the clergymen. This play, when contrasted with the reality of Galileo s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. rhetorical Essay Rhetorical Analysis The article We Are Training Our Kids to Kill by David Grossman is an attempt at explaining the effect of mass media on our children as far as violence and the impacting role it plays. Grossman, a self entitled world traveler and an expert in the field of killology uses the rhetorical aspects of ethos, pathos, and logos to get his point across. Regardless of the fact that Grossman did build some credibility for himself, used reasoning, emotion, and some facts to support his opinion, he did not use them in a very effective way. I am going to label this article as ineffective. The first reason I m ruling Grossman s writing as ineffective is because he seemed to contradict himself throughout his writing. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After Goldman makes this statement he doesn t go on to talk about the restrictions that parents or our society in general have or should have on movies, video games, or other forms of media. My third and final reason to show how Grossman s article is ineffective is that for a lot of the examples he used, he had no legitimate proof or substance to support them, or make a connection to his arguments. One of Grossman s statements that has no proof providing justification is In reality, the average man would load his musket and bring it to his shoulder, but he could not bring himself to kill. He would be brave, he would stand shoulder to shoulder, he would do what he was trained to do; but at the moment of truth, he could not bring himself to pull the trigger. Here Grossman is talking about soldiers in the Civil War. This statement was all assumed. There was no journal, or historian quoted, or any other credible knowledge suppressed to support this. The author talks like he knows the military realities and that may be the case, but I m sure that common sense can tell the reader that Grossman does not have the knowledge to have this information in his article without substance behind it. The military realities that the author knows are much more modern and contemporary than those of the Civil War. Times change and so does the military along with it. Over all, ... • 18. Cultural And Religious Beliefs And Beliefs Family is something that makes people what they are and supports them in every difficult situation. Cultural and religious beliefs often dictate family structures, and the beliefs of those cultures and religions, especially regarding genders, are then reflected in power dynamics. This happens because cultures manipulate people s perspective of viewing genders because of their religious beliefs. Some families are shaped according to this belief that men are more important and the boys in a family get more privileges and more attention than the girls. Different cultures and their beliefs make the boys and the men look more powerful and cause the girls to think that they are inferior to the boys. In Hmong and in many other households, boys are seen as more important. They are the ones who will carry the family traditions and name to next generation. Girls are seen as someone else s property as they will get married and go to someone else s family and will carry their name and be a part of that family. Girls since childhood are taught that the house they were born in and are raised in is not their actual house. Their house will be where their husband lives. In Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, Anne Fadiman wrote about how a girl s placenta is buried under her parent s bed. However, a boy s placenta is buried near the base of the house s central wooden pillar because in this pillar a male spirit who is a domestic guardian, held the roof up. Honor is not a materialistic item that can be bought or obtained, but rather must be earned and recognized by the aspects of one s character and actions. For nearly all people in the past in the days of chivalry as well as select individuals in modern society, honor is the driving force behind every action, and is the one true virtue that defies their character and mindset. Gawaine is a character in the novel who does not follow the guidelines of chivalry, and is rather disgusted by honor and the mindset that honorable people follow. Gawaine does not follow the universal sense of right or wrong, yet rather follows the instinct that enables his brawn and fighting to shape his character (White 166). However, Ignatiev asserts that those traditional American values were originally inaccessible for the newly arrived Irish immigrants. Shown by the virulent opposition toward immigration, Ignatiev highlights how the growing fear of foreign intrusion and ethnic tensions threatened to rape the superfluity of many Irish immigrants and their opportunity to uncover prosperity and freedom in America. Not only did How the Irish Became White uncover the brutal oppression and widespread xenophobic sentiments towards the Irish, it also shows how they eventually gain a level of economic opportunity by cultivating a scene of whiteness that embodied contemporary American values and briefs. A snake has made it a habit of eating the raven s eggs every time one is laid. The raven complains to it to stop, but to no avail. When the raven complains to the jackal of its problem and how it hopes to solve the problem by clawing the snakes eyes out, the jackal tells her the parable of the heron and the crab. Briefly, the old heron uses the innocent crab to trick the fish by claiming that the fishermen are coming to wipe them out and that he can help them by each day carrying them to a pool where they will be safe. The fish agree to the heron s trick. The heron carries a few fish away each day, but as soon as he is out of the sight of the other fish, he eats them. One day when the crab wants to be taken to the pool, he sees all the fish bones and realizes what has been happening. The crab then attacks the heron, pinching its throat and killing it. The moral to this story, explains the jackal, is sometimes people destroy themselves by their own craft and cunning if they are not careful (Arberry 92).
