Informative Speech On Lung Cancer
I believe there is hope even through the worst type of situations. Most people don t know it or
feel it, but hope is hiding somewhere near you begging to come out. In many situations, people
cannot find their hope, but I assure you it s there. Quite a while ago my grandma, my dad s
mom, was told something that no family wants to hear. My grandmother, Connie Brooks, was
diagnosed with cancer. Lung cancer that is. Her second time having lung cancer and her third
time having cancer in total. I was having an attitude with my mother before she told me what
was happening with grandma, and once she told me I was beyond devastated. Why should I be
so self centered and rude to my family when we re at a time of crisis? I knew my grandma had
smoked in the past and it was a stupid mistake, but why did cancer have to pick her? I knew my
grandma could put up a really good fight, but with only one lung could she survive? Yes, with her
past lung cancer she lost one of her lungs, but she has been living more carefully ever since.
Connie Brooks is a selfless, confident, strong woman, and cancer chose the wrong woman and
family to mess with.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She was at a hospital quite close to her home in Englewood, I can t recall the exact hospital she
stayed at, with its white floors, white walls, and white beds. Such a plain hospital room can hold
so many stories from so many different people. Each time we would drive to the hospital, walk
into her room, and see her, I was so scared that she would be worse than the visit before. When
we didn t visit grandma and grandpa in the hospital, I would think of her all the time. I was
always so worried that there was a possibility that she wouldn t make it because cancer doesn t
care who you are, your story, or your family history, it will pick whoever it wants and doesn t

Women In Colonial Latin American Culture
Colonial Latin America is an interesting period of history to study. Many changes have occurred
regarding aspects of both Colonial Latin American society and culture. Laws, rights, and
industrialization has occurred since the beginning of Colonial Latin America era, shaping its
society and culture into something new. Although some aspects of Colonial Latin Americaremain
today, both the society and culture has vastly changed. The primary demographic that this research
paper will focus on is the women within Colonial Latin America society, focusing on the lives they
lived within that periods culture. The theme that this research paper will primarily focus on
regarding the lives of women within Colonial Latin America society is domestic violence. Although
domestic violence still occurs to this day, it was viewed differently within Colonial Latin American
society. How Colonial Latin American society viewed domestic violence reflected upon the values
within that culture. What makes studying domestic violence within Colonial Latin American
society interesting is the fact that it reveals a lot about the values within its culture. Domestic
violence reveals a wide range of information regarding the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

A man is said to have honor and is obliged to defend his honor and that of his family, while a
woman must conserve her purity or sexual virtue. She too protects the honor of the family, for by
guarding her purity she additionally assures the purity of the family bloodline. A woman is said to
have shame. Shame is a concern for repute, the sentiment that makes a person sensitive to the
pressure exerted by public opinion, and thus to have shame is to be honorable and applies equally
to men and women; but shame can also denote qualities of modesty or decorum that belongs
exclusively to women. A shameless woman acts without regard for her honor or that of her family;

The Behavioral Theory Of Depression
Depression is a mood disorder which is categorised by low mood and a wide range of other
symptoms, which will inevitably differ depending on the individual. This mental health illness can
either progress at a fast rate or steadily. Many scientific and medicinal professionals view
depression as a defence mechanism that the body implements in order to escape from stress.
Seligman (1973) discussed depression in terms of it being like a common cold of psychiatry, due to
how frequently it is diagnosed. The behaviourist approach accentuates the significance of the
environment in regards to determining an individual s behaviour. To behaviourist theorists, our
behaviour does not relate with our internal unconscious struggles or suppressions. However,
psychologists in this field use ideologies of the learning theory to explain human behaviour.
According to the behavioural theory, dysfunctional behaviour such as depression is learned and so
because of this, psychologists propose that it can also be unlearned. This perspective focuses on
behaviour which is observable and the circumstances in which a particular individual has learnt that
behaviour. As a result, depression is therefore seen by behaviourist theorists as a result of an
individual s contact with their environment.
Classical conditioning would suggest that depression is cultured through the connotation of certain
stimuli s with undesirable emotional states. Operant conditioning believes that depression is
instigated by

Frankenstein Book Cover Analysis
The first new cover I created for Frankenstein depicts Frankenstein s monster floating off the coast
of Ireland after murdering Henry Clerval. I chose to portray this scene because the death of Clerval
and the events leading up to it (namely Victor ultimately refusing to create a female partner for the
creature) are pivotal moments in the story. They mark the beginning of the bloodthirsty war of
revenge between Victor and the creature, which results in the death of both the book s main
protagonist and antagonist. The cover also displays the two parts of the creature s character; the
solid black silhouette, sitting stall and unfazed after killing Henry represents the part that seeks
revenge against his creator and mankind, while the reflection

important in designing. A lot of consideration go into analysing the storage requirements. The

Disk space capacity
Disk throughput capacity
Locations and roles of database servers
Network requirements: all database administrators and infrastructure designers should have a nuts

impacts infrastructural decisions. There is some analysing current database network traffic services:

Theme Of Animalism In Animal Farm
I read a book called, Animal Farm written by George Orwell. The book is about animals on a
farm who are overworked, and aren t treated well. Then, an insurgency made up of animals with
pigs as their leaders, rebel against Mr.Jones (owner of the farm) by driving him off his farm. The
animals try to make the perfect life for themselves, but that doesn t go as planned. Animal farm
then, starts to fail. The farm fails because of the pigs not being fair to the other animals, and the
animalsbeing too dumb to realize it. The other animals made mistakes, by not speaking up when
they thought something was wrong. Animalism starts to fail because pigs start to make power
grabs that screws the perfect life vision the animals have. . These reasons and many more are why...

One reason animalism fails, is because of power grabs by animals. There are many examples of
this throughout the book. One power grab that failed animalism, was when the pigs take the
milk and the apples for themselves. So it was agreed without further argument that the milk and
windfall apples (and also the main crop of apples when they ripened) should be reserved for the
pigs alone. (P.g 36) This is unfair because the pigs being selfish, but they are the leader, it
immediately grants them permission to do so. This shows why animalism fails because the pigs
don t do anything for the wellbeing of animal farm, they do things only for themselves. Another
example of a power grab is when Napoleon (a pig) takes the puppies so that they will obey and
protect him. It happened that Jessie and Bluebell had both whelped soon after the hay harvest,
giving birth between them to nine sturdy puppies. As soon as they were weaned, Napoleon took
them away from their mothers, saying that he would make himself responsible for their education.
He took them up into a loft which could only be reached by a

The Federal Reserve System Essay
The Federal Reserve System
Even before the creation of the Federal Reserve, banks were used by the public just as we use
them today. Deposits were made into savings accounts. Loans were taken out to mortgage a home
or finance a new business. Banknotes were issued and spent when the public borrowed from the
banks. Borrowers spent these banknotes just as paper money is spent today. These bank notes
were valued as money since they were backed by the promise that they would be exchanged on
demand for either gold or silver.
There was the occasionally belief on behalf of the public that banks would not be able to, or
outright refuse to honor their banknotes. This fear, if held by enough of a community, could lead to
a run on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These actions led to the fall in prices of securities. Loans were liquidated and borrowing from
banks and other lenders became difficult. Interest rates would rise rapidly and sharply. This type of
financial hardship led to the liquidation of bank credit. Over a long enough span, this liquidation
would lead to money crises (Federal Reserve System 5th ed pp. 10 11). These periods of financial
panics along with the inelastic money supply had long beleaguered the country. Bank failures,
business bankruptcies, and unstable economic development were results of the lack of a central
banking system (Federal Reserve System 8th ed. pp. 6 7). The Panic of 1907 was a bank run of
epic proportions that exacerbated the problem. Depositors withdrew their savings from the second
and third largest banks in the country. These banks were not able to generate enough funds to
cover the demand and subsequently closed their doors. Their closings rapidly spread fear across
the country leading to one of the largest runs on the banks the nation had ever witnessed
(Schlesinger pp. 41).
Fortunately, J.P. Morgan, the exorbitantly rich New York businessman came to the aid of the
financial system. He organized a group of bankers who shifted their funds to the failing banks.
Depositors were assured their savings were protected and could be withdrawn whenever they
wanted. The demand subsided and

The Assassination Of Brutus And Mark Antony
After the death of Julius ceaser both Brutus and Mark Antony both delivered a speech to the
people of Rome. Brutus admitted to the people of Rome right away that he was involved in the
assassination of Ceaser. Brutus explained to the crowd that Ceaser was a very good friend of his
and he didn t assassinate King Ceaser in attempt to take control of Rome himself or for someone
else to take power: he Explained that he was involved with the assassination because he feared
that Caesar was more focused on his own agenda rather then focused on what was best for the
nation and his people. Brutus explained that he noticed signs of a tyrant in Caesar early on and
feared he was only getting worse and eventually would put all of Rome under his tyranny.

Therapeutic Relationship
The most important aspect within any support environment for a bereaved person to have with the
other (or within a group) is trust and a slow but sure build up of a strong, steady terapeutic
relationship, where challenges can be given and reflected on as a discussion point rather than a

Space and time to discuss the past and to come to terms with the way things are should not be
rushed in the therapy room, or elsewhere, as it can and will invalidate, and as it is important that
within this reminiscence that feelings are identified and worked through at a client led pace whilst

Essay on Meat Industry
The meat industry today is not what it was nearly a century ago. While improvements are thought
to have been made, an ever changing society has brought upon new problems that have been piled
on to the previously existing ones. While these problems are not like those found in The Jungle,
they do parallel how by exposing what is going on in the meatindustry; new regulations would be
the answer to the noted problems. The increased demand for meat has made it a rushed mutated
production instead of a means to raise livestock for consumers. Taking into consideration the
demand for cheap meat that will be used for in quick and high demanded products such as frozen
and fast food, this demand of meat has greatly skyrocketed. Animals whose sole... Show more

This is even more so if the hormones that were used to modify the meat for production have side
effects that are passed down via this new food chain. If anything the regulations that the animals
will get will end up being a regulation for humans too. It is something that is needed for health
regulations not only of humans but of the animals that are in the business. The grounds for this
argument are the horrible conditions that animals are faced with that include medical
modifications, hormone and antibiotic injections, animals receive, and the why conditions in
which they are stored to grow up in affect the output product. Along with the bad things that come
from the lack of strong enough regulations the point of organic meat will help support the main
claim by showing how that kind of meat is more beneficial. The main opposition to the core of
this argument would come from the vegetarian standpoint. Knocking everything down from the
meat, that would be the vegetarian point of view. This opposition will highlight the vegetarian
diet and show the downsides of meat based on the quality of both diets. The conditions in which
meat livestock live in is not exactly that of a large open green field in which they are free to roam
and be merry. In the Economist article, Cows down: The beef business (2008) the effects of the ill

FYS 110Z: Creating/Imagining/Real Life

On my honor, I pledge that I have upheld the Honor Code, and that the work I have done on this
assignment has been honest, and that the work of others in this class has, to the best of my
knowledge, been honest as well. The Neverending Story is filled with a world of imagination and
creativity and with imagination, our world can become a land of fantasy. In this paper, creativity
and imagination will be discussed and how they correlate with one another. The world is seen by
many as a giant floating rock in space; however, some see it as a land of opportunity and a place

Imagination is useless without creativity. Anyone can imagine themselves walking down a street;
however, it takes a creative person to imagine walking down a street of an alien planet inhabited by
living Cheetos. This scenario might be considered a little outlandish, yet it takes that extreme
creativity to stand apart from other. Albert Einstein once said, imagination is more important than
knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand while imagination
embraces the entire world and all there ever will be to know and understand. Imagination and
creativity benefit from one another, and one can not achieve greatness without the other.
Imagination and creativity are essential qualities that help innovators have breakthroughs in
science, math, technology, and many other things. To be a creative individual, one must imagine
the impossible and improbable. For example, Michael Endie had to imagine the quicksand that
engulfs life if it has sorrow thoughts. The sand can be directly connected with depression and how,
once it has a person, it constantly drags them down. On the other hand, to be imaginative, an
individual must think outside the parameters of our modern world. For example, in The
Neverending Story Tinys had a pet snail for transport similar to a horse in our world. Michael
Endie had

Questions On Protocol And Protocol
2.3 What is a Protocol?
Protocol is nothing but set of guidelines, which supports the data exchange between the layers. The
guidelines describe what to do (the details like when and where to send the data, data format).
2.4 What is a Protocol Data Unit?
Telecommunication protocol create protocol data unit in sender side. This protocol data unit of
message is transmitted by using protocol. Each PDU have particular format and contains header
information in header information identify protocol type and send data to particular destination.
The type of data transmitted by protocol is called PDU.
2.5 What is Protocol Architecture? The protocol architecture is nothing but development of
communication protocols in network. Has multiple layers with many protocols.
2.6 What is TCP/IP?
The transmission control protocol/Internet protocol is used to transmit the data to hosts in network.
This is used in network topology communication establishment and data transmission purpose.
TCP/IP is a two layer protocol high layer is TCP and low layer is IP. Small packets data are
transmitted by TCP and it gets small packets grouped and form original data. IP protocol forward
these data to particular destination.
2.7 What are some advantages of Layering seen in TCP/IP Architecture?

The Consequences Of Huck Finn
As certain characters use language as a source of power, others use it to help others. It is these
different motivations that sharpen the image for who has good and bad intentions, allowing
differing consequences to occur. As a result of lying, this leads to conflicting morals and inevitable
consequences that have an impact on everyone else. In the novel Huck Finn Mark Twainargues that
lying is wrong and is a source of power that certain characters use to either help others or
themselves; however, the consequences are different due to these different motivations with
characters such as the King, Duke and Huck who end up having a greater impact on the rest of the
community.
Although Huck lies to help others most of the time, his conflicting morals hold him back which
results in a stronger impact than intended. In the beginning of the novel, Huck states, You don t
know about me, without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but
that ain t no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. There
was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth(Twain 11). Huck is defensive and
makes it clear that he is trustworthy and does not lie, which is not true. Huck questions his morals
later on in the novel when he lies to his father when he says, I hain t got no money. It s a lie.

we are able to communicate and interact with larger and more diverse groups of people than we
were able to in the past. We are no longer confined to the physical space which we occupy, but we
are free to become members of a global community. Thus, we are exposed to various people,
cultures, identities, and conceptions of the humanthat we were ignorant to previously. At the same

What is important about shipping fic in terms of representation is that a good majority of these
shipping fics portray romantic relationships between members of the same sex. Oftentimes these
relationships have a basis within the subtext of the original work, but the subtextual relationship is
not brought into the textual, most likely due to the lock in. And while there has been a recent
increase in the portrayals of homosexual relationships in the mainstream media, bisexuality gets
even less representation, and in the cases of other sexual orientations such as pansexuality,
demisexuality, and asexuality fanfiction is one of the only places where they can get any
representation at all. There has also been a similar trend in the representation of the transgender

find this amount and kind of representation to be lacking, especially when considering the fact that
other non traditional gender identities such as non binary, agender, or genderfluid have little to

Stand By Me Film Techniques
Stand By Me, directed by Rob Reiner, is a film set in the 1950 s, in a small town called Castle
Rock. It is an adventure story about the friendship of four boys who are on a journey to see
death. Along the journey, the boys, Chris, Gordy, Vern and Teddy encounter many problems and
challenges which in turn illustrates the individual personality of each of the boys to the audience.
The overall film displays Rob Reiner s view of how growing up can sometimes be a difficult
translation period. Through a variety of scenes, Reiner has conveyed the idea that the future of
young boys will be influenced by both the positive and negative aspects of their lives. This is
clearly evident through the boys attitude towards smoking and the types of clothing they each wear.
Throughout the film, the boys are continually imitating Ace and his gang to gain respect amongst
the older boys.

gun before, and hence are growing up due to this new experience. As a result of these new
experiences, the boys are becoming more aware and vulnerable to the would around them. This is
also evident when the boys return back to Castle Rock after their journey. They find their home

Harold And Maude, A Film Released In 1971 And Directed
Harold and Maude, a film released in 1971 and directed by Hal Ashby is a provocative and
relevant anti establishment film against today s society s traditional definition of love and
marriage. The definition being that the older man and the younger woman is acceptable to us
simply because a marriage is about propagating children. Through the relationship of Harold, a
twenty year old man, and Maude, an eighty year old woman, Ashby presents us with the ultimate
lovestory, one which is not set within the acceptable limitations of conventionality, yet it teaches us
that love can be simple, genuine, and unselfish.

According to Ph.D. psychologist Nando Pelusi, The desire for certainty and genetic possession
of a partner is an ancient commandment, based on maintaining one s status and honor. Deferring
from today s society that has a twisted idea of love, in which it is demonstrated through a
mixture of control and jealousy, Maude s love for Harold is genuine and event innocent in a way
due to its lack of possessiveness. This is clearly shown in the phrase that Maude said to him on her
deathbed, Oh! That s wonderful, Harold. Go and love some more. (Harold and Maude) With just
two single phrases she s able to express that she loves him so deeply that what she truly wants is
for him to be happy, even if it won t necessarily be with her.
For the characters love to be truly ultimate they need to have some limitations; in this case the core
and foremost limitation being the institution of marriage, since Harold and Maude think differently
when desisting to this establishment. Even when authority figures in Harold s life abundantly
criticize their relationship and demean Maude s body into an old and withered corpse; Harold is
still willing to give in to the establishment of marriage his mother was presenting him with. He was
of course relinquishing in his own way, yet the fact that he was complying with it was a limitation,
since unlike Harold, Maude never conceded into that establishment. At the end of the film Harold

15 to October 28 1962 between the US and the Soviet Union over ballistic missile deployment in
Cuba by the Soviets. The peaceful removal of those missiles was both a challenge and a goal for
the Kennedy administration. The Cuban Missile Crisiswas arguably one of the most dangerous Cold
Waraffairs whose escalation would have led to a global nuclear war demise.
Both Harvard educated men and born into a wealthy, ambitious family, Robert and John Kennedy
were influenced by their father to become involved in politics and managed to do that very

Three events are associated with the Cuban Missile Crisis: superpower tension, the domestic
situation in Cuba, and the Bay of Pigs incident. The ideological competition between Russia and the
U.S. was exemplified in the arms, nuclear and space race, the funding of anti Communists by the
U.S., the unsuccessful Vienna Summit of 1961 and the construction of the Berlin Wall.
In 1958, Kruschev had asked NATO to give up West Berlin to East Germany and by the summer of
1961, Kruschev and Kennedy met during the Vienna Summit, where Kruschev insisted upon East
German control over West Berlin. On August 13, the Soviets and East Germans built a wall that
limited free means of access between the Western and Eastern zones. American and Soviet forces
confronted each other at Checkpoint Charlie, which controlled the passage across.
The U.S. eventually agreed with the wall s construction in November 1961, resolving the Berlin
Crisis. However, Kruschev had not yet gotten what he wanted. According to him, the installation of
Soviet missiles in Cuba could be to negotiate over Berlin. Kennedy might replace the removal of
Soviet Cuban missiles with retreat from West Berlin.

Feminism In The Scarlett Letter
Feminism in the Scarlet Letter According to Merriam Webster Dictionary the word feminism
means the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes . In a way the Scarlett
Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, portrays its main protagonist, Hester Prynne, as a poster
child for early feminism. Throughout the story Hester is slandered and shunned upon about
committing the sin of adultery. As the story continues we see the character of Hester evolve from a
timid, shameful human being into a confident, strong woman. With Hester facing the hardships of
making a living for herself, singlehandedly raising a child, and changing Puritansocial norms one
can conclude that the Scarlett Letter is an early piece of feministic literature. As a women in early
American society, women usually didn t play the role of the breadwinner in the household, but
Hester was an exception. Hester made quite a name for herself in the Massachusetts Bay Colony,
for her elegant work she produces with a needle and a thread.
Even though, Hester was the outcast of the town, her work was still seen on the ruff of the
Governor; military men wore it on their scarfs, and the minister on his band; it decked the baby s
little cap; it was shut up, to be mildewed and moulder away, in the coffins of the dead.
(Hawthorne 124). Hester s perseverance and work ethic helped her financially get by and provide
from her family, during a time where women were even less accounted for.
Hester did what even possible to make sure her family was able to survive, she put in as many
hours as she saw fit to occupy with her needle (Hawthorne 124). Clearly Hester has pushed the
social barriers that society as imprisoned her in for years and shattered them into pieces by
making a living for herself, in a society where it is highly unlikely for a women of her status to
accomplish, especially for a person who has an reputation like hers. Day after day, Hester is
reminded of the reason of her exile from her previous, everyday life. Hester was an adulteress, and
with that sin came a child. Singlehandedly, Hester had to raise this child, without a any moral,
financial support. Often in times breaking down into tears talking to the heavens asking

What Does White Man s Burden Mean
In the poem White Man s Burden, white man s burden is a phrase that came about in the
controversy about the United States procession of the Philippines after the Spanish American war.
It was a theory that the white Europeans would have to bring a sense of properness to the non
white Europeans due to the fact that they did not have a sense of properness. In the poem, it is
suggested that the citizens acquire a skill from practice. In the poem, it reads Take up the White
Man s burdenHave done with childish days The lightly proferred laurel, The easy, ungrudged
praise. Comes now, to search your manhood (Kipling). The acquired skill is that the non white
Europeans have acquired the skill of putting away the childish days, and are now in search of
manhood. This could be interpreted that the civilization has become like one another and is now

During American Imperialism, the term white man s burden was used as a justification for
expansion and annexation. The form of justification of imperialism use is the term civilizing
mission . This term best describes the justification due to the fact that The White Man s Burden,
explains the civilizing mission as the motion to make all citizens right minded by the white
Europeans. The white Europeans had the mission to civilize non proper cultures. The same line
mentioned above also confirms the idea that the non white European had adjusted to the ways
of the white European s and has accomplished the goal of becoming a man. Social Darwinism
can also be found in this poem. . Social Darwinism is the theory that tries to explain the success
of specific social group. This term can be used to describe the tone of the poem due to the fact
that it is expressed that a specific group of people is far more superior and educated than another
group. The line Take up the White Man s Burden (Kipling) is evidence enough to support this

How Does Atticus Show Real Courage
Q1 I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man
with a gun in his hand. It s when you know you re licked before you begin but you begin anyway
and you see through it no matter what. (pg. 112)Those are the words that Atticus Finch a lawyer
in a small town in Alabama, called Maycomb used to describe what real courage is. For Atticus
being a lawyer is fighting for what is right whether if you win or lose. Atticus shows what real
courage is in Harper Lee s story To Kill a MockingBird.
Atticus is one of many characters in To Kill a MockingBird that shows courage throughout the
whole story, such when he defends Tom Robinson in a court case.. Atticus knows Tom is
innocent and wants to defend him, since no one else wants to. Like he said to his son Jem Q2
Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit em, but remember it s a sin to kill a mockingbird.
(pg.119)What he means by that is that if you know someone hasn t done anything wrong and you
do something wrong to them, it s a sin. He shows courage by helping an african american in a
court case accused of raping a white woman with the only evidence to help is Tom Robinson s
word for it. This shows courage because not many would have taken the task of that difficult case
and have to hear what people say about them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Return On Investments ( Roi )
Return on Investments (ROI) is an excellent tool that business professionals use to measure the
benefit an organization receives by administrating the training program. The formula for ROI is the
ratio of the results divided by the training costs. An example of ROI is the dollar value of
productivity divided by training costs. A company benefits from administrating a training program if
the ratio of results to costs is high. There are apparently many formulas out there that organizations
are using for ROI, but the formula recommended to use for training return on investment would be
Training ROI = (Total returns Training cost) / Training cost (Schmidt). Management in many
organizations requires proof that training is financially justified and a good return on investment.
If not, then the cost of training may possibly be reduced. It is all about the money that an
organization can or cannot afford to use for the purpose of training. There are some critics who
feel that ROI is not a necessity, whereas there are some critics who feel that ROI is an important
necessity for an organization now more than ever.
The training program is more expensive than its returns to the organization if the ROI ratio is less
than one. Unfortunately, such a training program has to be either changed or cancelled. Therefore,
the ROI ratio has to be more than one in order for the training program to be of some value to the
organization. Training expenditures, training costs, and

Child maltreatment has become a national epidemic. More than one million children are

agencies. Every day at least three children die as a result of abuse or neglect. State child welfare
records indicate that substance abuse is one of the top two problems exhibited by families in 81%
of the reported cases. Recent research on the connection between alcohol or drug problems and
child maltreatment clearly indicates a connection between the two problems. Among confirmed
cases of child maltreatment, 40% involve the use of alcohol or other drugs.
This suggests that of the 1.2 million confirmed victims of child maltreatment, and estimated
480,000 children are mistreated each year by a caretaker with alcohol or other drug problems.
Additionally, research suggests that alcohol and other drug problems are factors in a majority of
cases of emotional abuse and neglect. In fact, neglect is the major reason that children are removed
from a home in which parents have alcohol or other drug problems. Children

A Sociological Issue On South Africa
In South Africa race took a shift from biology to culture. Because is of its many diverse
indigenous groups, race was no longer a difference between Afrikaners and the English but with
Zulus, Xhosa and Tswanas. Language was used as a determinant of race. Dubow argues that not
much scientifically constructed race has been done in South Africa despite the fact that race
has deep seated roots. This is because many dismissed race as being scientific as it began to
appear to be a sociological issue. Science was then pushed aside and race was now seen as a
social and intellectual construct (Dubow, 1995: 2 5) from natural science to solely social
science resulting from everyday experiences. When we say race is a social construct we
disregard any possibility of it being that of a scientific one. It is not something that we are born
with because of our culture (Erasmus, 2005: 9), instead, simply out, race is a bunch of
meanings that we attach to people. We do not dispute the fact that there are differences among
people. Those differences just run much deeper. By saying race is a social construct this is not
to say that it doesn t exist seeing that it affects our lives; it determines our real life experiences.
Saying it is socially constructed means that race is a learnt behaviour and what can be learnt can
easily be unlearnt. We say it is constructed because it was used as a basis of division by powerful
people who felt superior. Its implications as a construct are still very

The Death Penalty Was Furman V. Georgia Essay
As society has evolved, the way the death penalty has been implemented has also evolved
sometimes against the words of our Constitution. One of the more influential cases that transformed
how people view the death penalty was Furman v. Georgia. This case set up a guide for limited
sentencing discretion; this meant that sentencing for the death penalty would become standardized.
Essentially in extreme cases, every criminal death qualified would be sent to death row and
eventually executed. After disputes after Furman, cases like Woodson v. North Carolina insisted on
individualized discretion when discussing the death penalty. Those in favor of Woodson believed
that character ad record of an individual must be accounted especially when discussing life or death
(Woodson 238). In Walton v. Arizona, Justice Scalia and Justice Blackburn dispute over the
rationality of limited discretion v individualized discretion. Although each presents his case
differently, both agree about the tension between the Furman s promotion for limited discretion and
Woodson s idea of individualized sentencing discretion. In accordance with the Constitution, both
Furman v. Georgiaand Woodson v. North Carolina violated the Eighth Amendment in their
respective ways but the current system (in terms of capital punishmentprovides a loose balance that
ensures both the uniqueness of human beings as well as limits arbitrariness.

Relationship Between Monetary Policy And The Stock Market
1. Introduction
In the past 20 years, the central banks in most developed countries had successfully managed to
control the inflation rate. However, the financial crisis 2008 has highlighted the links between
financial market and policy. (Ravn, 2011) The topic I am going to discuss is the relationship
between monetary policy and the stock market. What factors have influenced interest rate and how
the policymakers should react to the change in stock market have driven the increasing attentions
lately. Taylor Rule (2003) will be the core theory used to discuss the model tested. The
interpretation of simple Taylor rule is very straightforward. According to the
equationi_t=c+ОІ(ПЂ_t ПЂ_t^* )+Оі(y_t y_t^* )+Оµ_t , the policy will be mainly affected by
inflation gap and output gap. (Woodford, 2001) The reason why Taylor uses interest rate to
represent monetary policy is that the central bank likes to adjust interest rate as a tool to maintain
the balance in the market. While, there is a strong debate about the other variables, in particular,
stock price volatility. After taking asset price volatility into account, the augmented Taylor rule
equation will be reformulated as:i_t=c+ОІ(ПЂ_t ПЂ_t^* )+Оі(y_t y_t^*
)+∑_(k=1)^nв
–’гЂ–Оґ_k s_(t k)+Оµ_t гЂ—. It will influence the monetary policy while the
importance of asset price in the market is very controversial. Scholars including Bernanke and
Gertler question the importance of asset price in determining the monetary policy and claim that the

Why Is Huckleberry Finn Be Taught In Schools
Lessons can always be learned. High school students really learn through two primary ways. The
first way is through first hand experiences. The second way, and arguably the most effective way, is
through books and in class lectures. Mark Twain, arguably one of the greatest American authors,
wrote Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a controversial book. Originally banned, this book brings
readers to a pre civil war period, a time where racism is adherently present. This touchy subject
creates a sense of uneasiness within the teaching community because they feel uncomfortable
teaching such a horrible time in America s history. This leads to teachers avoiding Huckleberry

James Baldwin wrote in Notes of a Native Son that, [it] was clear that [his father] felt [white s]

blacks contained this inherent annoyance when it came to being around whites. Jim s character
represents this feeling of uneasiness. Throughout the book Jim was an outsider and never made
the cut when it came to going on Huck s adventures. Especially around the Dauphin and Duke,
white con men, Jim often fell into the background. These details are an example of how
Huckleberry Finn is a great representation of the time period. Although the novel was very

Naval Station Norfolk is home to over 150 vessels with frequent visits from ships throughout the
world. Port Operations is one of many departments onboard Naval Station Norfolk, and its mission
is to provide service and support to more than 150 ships in the US Atlantic fleet (CNIC, n.d.). Naval
Station Norfolk recently celebrated its 100 year anniversary. Although the base is quite seasoned, its

search for an answer, one can turn to the A Writing Lesson chapter from LГ©vi Strauss book,
Tristes Tropiques. He conducted an ethnography on the Nambikwara people in the Amazon,
focusing on their interaction with European writing utensils for they do not have a written
language. When the chief asks him for a writing pad, LГ©vi Strauss writes, No doubt he was the
only one who had grasped the purpose of writing (LГ©vi Strauss 1279 1280). The purpose of
writing (and reading) he later reveals is having power over others. ... Show more content on

The Black Walnut Tree Figurative Language
In The Roots
There is a conflict between practicality and sentimentality conveyed through the use of both literal
and figurative language by poet Mary Oliver in The Black Walnut Tree. There is an alternation
from a debate between mother and daughter rationalizing reasons of selling the black walnut tree
that sits in the family s backyard in order to pay off their mortgage, to the symbolic viewing and
characterization of the tree as a reflection of the family s history and what value it holds to further
generations. Despite the whip crack of the mortgage experienced every month, cutting down the
black walnut tree would be a heinous deception on the family s heritage.
The literal language used in the beginning of the free verse does not imply the tree having any
symbolic meaning to the speaker and her mother. It is casually said My mother and I debate, we
could sell the black walnut tree...[to] pay off the mortgage which defines that in these lines the tree
has not yet been introduced with its symbolic purpose. Initially, the tree is viewed as a property
they are willing to sell. They rationalize the idea by noting that there are roots in the ... Show more

  • 2. Informative Speech On Lung Cancer I believe there is hope even through the worst type of situations. Most people don t know it or feel it, but hope is hiding somewhere near you begging to come out. In many situations, people cannot find their hope, but I assure you it s there. Quite a while ago my grandma, my dad s mom, was told something that no family wants to hear. My grandmother, Connie Brooks, was diagnosed with cancer. Lung cancer that is. Her second time having lung cancer and her third time having cancer in total. I was having an attitude with my mother before she told me what was happening with grandma, and once she told me I was beyond devastated. Why should I be so self centered and rude to my family when we re at a time of crisis? I knew my grandma had smoked in the past and it was a stupid mistake, but why did cancer have to pick her? I knew my grandma could put up a really good fight, but with only one lung could she survive? Yes, with her past lung cancer she lost one of her lungs, but she has been living more carefully ever since. Connie Brooks is a selfless, confident, strong woman, and cancer chose the wrong woman and family to mess with.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we didn t visit grandma and grandpa in the hospital, I would think of her all the time. • 4. The Behavioral Theory Of Depression Depression is a mood disorder which is categorised by low mood and a wide range of other symptoms, which will inevitably differ depending on the individual. This mental health illness can either progress at a fast rate or steadily. Many scientific and medicinal professionals view depression as a defence mechanism that the body implements in order to escape from stress. Seligman (1973) discussed depression in terms of it being like a common cold of psychiatry, due to how frequently it is diagnosed. The behaviourist approach accentuates the significance of the environment in regards to determining an individual s behaviour. To behaviourist theorists, our behaviour does not relate with our internal unconscious struggles or suppressions. However, psychologists in this field use ideologies of the learning theory to explain human behaviour. According to the behavioural theory, dysfunctional behaviour such as depression is learned and so because of this, psychologists propose that it can also be unlearned. This perspective focuses on behaviour which is observable and the circumstances in which a particular individual has learnt that behaviour. As a result, depression is therefore seen by behaviourist theorists as a result of an individual s contact with their environment. Classical conditioning would suggest that depression is cultured through the connotation of certain stimuli s with undesirable emotional states. Operant conditioning believes that depression is instigated by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I chose to portray this scene because the death of Clerval and the events leading up to it (namely Victor ultimately refusing to create a female partner for the creature) are pivotal moments in the story. They mark the beginning of the bloodthirsty war of revenge between Victor and the creature, which results in the death of both the book s main protagonist and antagonist. The cover also displays the two parts of the creature s character; the solid black silhouette, sitting stall and unfazed after killing Henry represents the part that seeks revenge against his creator and mankind, while the reflection ... Then, an insurgency made up of animals with pigs as their leaders, rebel against Mr.Jones (owner of the farm) by driving him off his farm. The animals try to make the perfect life for themselves, but that doesn t go as planned. Animal farm then, starts to fail. The farm fails because of the pigs not being fair to the other animals, and the animalsbeing too dumb to realize it. The other animals made mistakes, by not speaking up when they thought something was wrong. One reason animalism fails, is because of power grabs by animals. There are many examples of this throughout the book. One power grab that failed animalism, was when the pigs take the milk and the apples for themselves. So it was agreed without further argument that the milk and windfall apples (and also the main crop of apples when they ripened) should be reserved for the pigs alone. (P.g 36) This is unfair because the pigs being selfish, but they are the leader, it immediately grants them permission to do so. This shows why animalism fails because the pigs don t do anything for the wellbeing of animal farm, they do things only for themselves. Another example of a power grab is when Napoleon (a pig) takes the puppies so that they will obey and protect him. It happened that Jessie and Bluebell had both whelped soon after the hay harvest, giving birth between them to nine sturdy puppies. As soon as they were weaned, Napoleon took them away from their mothers, saying that he would make himself responsible for their education. • 8. The Federal Reserve System Essay The Federal Reserve System Even before the creation of the Federal Reserve, banks were used by the public just as we use them today. Deposits were made into savings accounts. Loans were taken out to mortgage a home or finance a new business. Banknotes were issued and spent when the public borrowed from the banks. Borrowers spent these banknotes just as paper money is spent today. These bank notes were valued as money since they were backed by the promise that they would be exchanged on demand for either gold or silver. There was the occasionally belief on behalf of the public that banks would not be able to, or outright refuse to honor their banknotes. Loans were liquidated and borrowing from banks and other lenders became difficult. Interest rates would rise rapidly and sharply. This type of financial hardship led to the liquidation of bank credit. Over a long enough span, this liquidation would lead to money crises (Federal Reserve System 5th ed pp. 10 11). These periods of financial panics along with the inelastic money supply had long beleaguered the country. Bank failures, business bankruptcies, and unstable economic development were results of the lack of a central banking system (Federal Reserve System 8th ed. pp. 6 7). The Panic of 1907 was a bank run of epic proportions that exacerbated the problem. Depositors withdrew their savings from the second and third largest banks in the country. These banks were not able to generate enough funds to cover the demand and subsequently closed their doors. Their closings rapidly spread fear across the country leading to one of the largest runs on the banks the nation had ever witnessed (Schlesinger pp. 41). Fortunately, J.P. Morgan, the exorbitantly rich New York businessman came to the aid of the financial system. He organized a group of bankers who shifted their funds to the failing banks. Depositors were assured their savings were protected and could be withdrawn whenever they wanted. The demand subsided and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While improvements are thought to have been made, an ever changing society has brought upon new problems that have been piled on to the previously existing ones. While these problems are not like those found in The Jungle, they do parallel how by exposing what is going on in the meatindustry; new regulations would be the answer to the noted problems. The increased demand for meat has made it a rushed mutated production instead of a means to raise livestock for consumers. This is even more so if the hormones that were used to modify the meat for production have side effects that are passed down via this new food chain. If anything the regulations that the animals will get will end up being a regulation for humans too. It is something that is needed for health regulations not only of humans but of the animals that are in the business. The grounds for this argument are the horrible conditions that animals are faced with that include medical modifications, hormone and antibiotic injections, animals receive, and the why conditions in which they are stored to grow up in affect the output product. Along with the bad things that come from the lack of strong enough regulations the point of organic meat will help support the main claim by showing how that kind of meat is more beneficial. The main opposition to the core of this argument would come from the vegetarian standpoint. Knocking everything down from the meat, that would be the vegetarian point of view. This opposition will highlight the vegetarian diet and show the downsides of meat based on the quality of both diets. The conditions in which meat livestock live in is not exactly that of a large open green field in which they are free to roam and be merry. Anyone can imagine themselves walking down a street; however, it takes a creative person to imagine walking down a street of an alien planet inhabited by living Cheetos. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand while imagination embraces the entire world and all there ever will be to know and understand. Imagination and creativity benefit from one another, and one can not achieve greatness without the other. Imagination and creativity are essential qualities that help innovators have breakthroughs in science, math, technology, and many other things. To be a creative individual, one must imagine the impossible and improbable. For example, Michael Endie had to imagine the quicksand that engulfs life if it has sorrow thoughts. The sand can be directly connected with depression and how, once it has a person, it constantly drags them down. On the other hand, to be imaginative, an individual must think outside the parameters of our modern world. • 22. Feminism In The Scarlett Letter Feminism in the Scarlet Letter According to Merriam Webster Dictionary the word feminism means the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes . In a way the Scarlett Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, portrays its main protagonist, Hester Prynne, as a poster child for early feminism. Throughout the story Hester is slandered and shunned upon about committing the sin of adultery. As the story continues we see the character of Hester evolve from a timid, shameful human being into a confident, strong woman. With Hester facing the hardships of making a living for herself, singlehandedly raising a child, and changing Puritansocial norms one can conclude that the Scarlett Letter is an early piece of feministic literature. As a women in early American society, women usually didn t play the role of the breadwinner in the household, but Hester was an exception. Hester made quite a name for herself in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, for her elegant work she produces with a needle and a thread. Even though, Hester was the outcast of the town, her work was still seen on the ruff of the Governor; military men wore it on their scarfs, and the minister on his band; it decked the baby s little cap; it was shut up, to be mildewed and moulder away, in the coffins of the dead. (Hawthorne 124). Hester s perseverance and work ethic helped her financially get by and provide from her family, during a time where women were even less accounted for. Hester did what even possible to make sure her family was able to survive, she put in as many hours as she saw fit to occupy with her needle (Hawthorne 124). Clearly Hester has pushed the social barriers that society as imprisoned her in for years and shattered them into pieces by making a living for herself, in a society where it is highly unlikely for a women of her status to accomplish, especially for a person who has an reputation like hers. Day after day, Hester is reminded of the reason of her exile from her previous, everyday life. Hester was an adulteress, and with that sin came a child. The formula for ROI is the ratio of the results divided by the training costs. An example of ROI is the dollar value of productivity divided by training costs. A company benefits from administrating a training program if the ratio of results to costs is high. There are apparently many formulas out there that organizations are using for ROI, but the formula recommended to use for training return on investment would be Training ROI = (Total returns Training cost) / Training cost (Schmidt). Management in many organizations requires proof that training is financially justified and a good return on investment. If not, then the cost of training may possibly be reduced. Because is of its many diverse indigenous groups, race was no longer a difference between Afrikaners and the English but with Zulus, Xhosa and Tswanas. Language was used as a determinant of race. Dubow argues that not much scientifically constructed race has been done in South Africa despite the fact that race has deep seated roots. This is because many dismissed race as being scientific as it began to appear to be a sociological issue. Science was then pushed aside and race was now seen as a social and intellectual construct (Dubow, 1995: 2 5) from natural science to solely social science resulting from everyday experiences. When we say race is a social construct we disregard any possibility of it being that of a scientific one. It is not something that we are born with because of our culture (Erasmus, 2005: 9), instead, simply out, race is a bunch of meanings that we attach to people. We do not dispute the fact that there are differences among people. Those differences just run much deeper. By saying race is a social construct this is not to say that it doesn t exist seeing that it affects our lives; it determines our real life experiences. Saying it is socially constructed means that race is a learnt behaviour and what can be learnt can easily be unlearnt. • 33. The Death Penalty Was Furman V. Georgia Essay As society has evolved, the way the death penalty has been implemented has also evolved sometimes against the words of our Constitution. One of the more influential cases that transformed how people view the death penalty was Furman v. Georgia. This case set up a guide for limited sentencing discretion; this meant that sentencing for the death penalty would become standardized. Essentially in extreme cases, every criminal death qualified would be sent to death row and eventually executed. After disputes after Furman, cases like Woodson v. North Carolina insisted on individualized discretion when discussing the death penalty. Those in favor of Woodson believed that character ad record of an individual must be accounted especially when discussing life or death (Woodson 238). In Walton v. Arizona, Justice Scalia and Justice Blackburn dispute over the rationality of limited discretion v individualized discretion. Although each presents his case differently, both agree about the tension between the Furman s promotion for limited discretion and Woodson s idea of individualized sentencing discretion. In accordance with the Constitution, both Furman v. Georgiaand Woodson v. North Carolina violated the Eighth Amendment in their respective ways but the current system (in terms of capital punishmentprovides a loose balance that ensures both the uniqueness of human beings as well as limits arbitrariness. Pre Furman v. Georgia, flaws within capital punishment gave way to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Employment Opportunities of Women in Britain in 1914... The Employment Opportunities of Women in Britain in 1914 Woman in Britain in 1914 had several job opportunities and from this period onwards the number of employed women began to rise significantly. This coursework will cover the following points; the kind of work women did, the payment they received and the working conditions under which they worked and chances of progress for women workers. One of the main reasons for these conditions was that most of the governmental departments were dominated by men whilst women were society s stereotypes. The other main factors include the lack of female education on a further degree and Victorian attitudes at that time. The main job in which women were... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Working in factories was extremely difficult because the work was very monotonous. More or less nine hundred thousand women worked in the textile Industry. The Sweated trade also engaged large numbers of women, the figure almost climbing to a million. Most employers were unbearable in their attitudes towards these working class women and therefore paid very low salaries. The worst fields of the Sweated trades were the clothing and the dressmaking industries. Many worked at home and received piece rates. They made jewellery, painted led soldiers or addressed envelopes. Only the downtrodden and deprived women in the society who in reality were the pillar of their own family had to work under these awful conditions. Women felt like secondary class citizens and were treated as such. Employers took advantage of women as the women s main concern was to survive low salaries and diabolic working conditions; advancement in career had no significance for them as their limited poor educational background lessened their chances of progress in most domains of their work. Clearly they took this job purely from the need to feed their families. Their lack of education and the dominance of men in the workforce gave them little choice other than to accept these manual, simple almost degrading types of jobs. • 36. The White Privilege In Elvis Presley s Career At the start of Presley s career, his privilege is displayed in his first and only performance at The Grand Ole Opry. Elvis Presley was not invited to perform at The Ryman Auditorium but rather given a chance after Sam Phillips begged Jim Denny to let Presley perform. While the audience did not receive Presley s style well, it did not hinder his career, Jim Denny simply confirmed that Elvis did not fit in The Opry Style that he had the desire to pursue. Regardless, that this was not Presley s audience he still obtained the performance opportunity. Nevertheless, he sauntered on the stage with his style, which he found during the talent search and then performed a typical song for the crowd in his style. One performance that was an outrage ... After touring Mexico, he brought a girl back to work in his nightclub. This led to Berry being arrested in accordance with the MANN Act.The MANN Act is a federal statute making it illegal to transport a woman across state lines for immoral purposes. Anyone found guilty could serve up to 5 years in prison for the offense. While this act was implemented, very rarely was it ever enforced. Berry was prosecuted simply because he was a rock and roll headliner, and an African American who had opened a night club in a predominantly white section of town. During the trials, Berry continued to record and perform embracing his music, but due to the situation at hand, many harassed him. If Berry were white would there have been any question or backlash to his musical career? No one can say for sure, but when comparing Berry to Presley, it raises concern. • 37. Relationship Between Monetary Policy And The Stock Market 1. Introduction In the past 20 years, the central banks in most developed countries had successfully managed to control the inflation rate. However, the financial crisis 2008 has highlighted the links between financial market and policy. (Ravn, 2011) The topic I am going to discuss is the relationship between monetary policy and the stock market. What factors have influenced interest rate and how the policymakers should react to the change in stock market have driven the increasing attentions lately. Taylor Rule (2003) will be the core theory used to discuss the model tested. The interpretation of simple Taylor rule is very straightforward. According to the equationi_t=c+ОІ(ПЂ_t ПЂ_t^* )+Оі(y_t y_t^* )+Оµ_t , the policy will be mainly affected by inflation gap and output gap. (Woodford, 2001) The reason why Taylor uses interest rate to represent monetary policy is that the central bank likes to adjust interest rate as a tool to maintain the balance in the market. While, there is a strong debate about the other variables, in particular, stock price volatility. After taking asset price volatility into account, the augmented Taylor rule equation will be reformulated as:i_t=c+ОІ(ПЂ_t ПЂ_t^* )+Оі(y_t y_t^* )+∑_(k=1)^nв –’гЂ–Оґ_k s_(t k)+Оµ_t гЂ—. It will influence the monetary policy while the importance of asset price in the market is very controversial. Scholars including Bernanke and Gertler question the importance of asset price in determining the monetary policy and claim that the influence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Why Is Huckleberry Finn Be Taught In Schools Lessons can always be learned. High school students really learn through two primary ways. The first way is through first hand experiences. The second way, and arguably the most effective way, is through books and in class lectures. Mark Twain, arguably one of the greatest American authors, wrote Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a controversial book. Originally banned, this book brings readers to a pre civil war period, a time where racism is adherently present. This touchy subject creates a sense of uneasiness within the teaching community because they feel uncomfortable teaching such a horrible time in America s history. This leads to teachers avoiding Huckleberry Finn. However, teachers who lecture and explore Huckleberry Finn concepts... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... James Baldwin wrote in Notes of a Native Son that, [it] was clear that [his father] felt [white s] very presence in his home to be a violation (54). Baldwin was able to explain to the audience that blacks contained this inherent annoyance when it came to being around whites. Jim s character represents this feeling of uneasiness. Throughout the book Jim was an outsider and never made the cut when it came to going on Huck s adventures. Especially around the Dauphin and Duke, white con men, Jim often fell into the background. These details are an example of how Huckleberry Finn is a great representation of the time period. Although the novel was very precise and detail oriented when it came to the time period details, Twain failed to mention how blacks felt toward whites. Brent Staples, a person of color and author of Just Walk On By: Black Men in Public Space. In this short story, Staples stated that, [he] grew up one of the good boys, had perhaps a half dozen fistfights (Staples 396). This aggression that black possessed during the time period was never accurately depicted; Twain failed to mention any black uprisings or revolts which were common pre Civil War. Though Twain was unable to describe black aggression toward whites, he was able to accurately portray the time period by writing in the time period s dialogue and by alluding to Jim s ... Scott Excelsior College Port Operations Naval Station Norfolk SWOT Analysis Naval Station Norfolk is home to over 150 vessels with frequent visits from ships throughout the world. Port Operations is one of many departments onboard Naval Station Norfolk, and its mission is to provide service and support to more than 150 ships in the US Atlantic fleet (CNIC, n.d.). Naval Station Norfolk recently celebrated its 100 year anniversary. Although the base is quite seasoned, its commitment to excellence has never wavered. In 1908, the first bill sent to Congress for the construction of Naval Station Norfolk failed to find its way through the halls of Washington (KГјrsener, 2010). In fact, it was not until 1917, after the start of World War II, that a bill was approved to begin constructing the world s largest naval station (KГјrsener, 2010). The ability to provide support to numerous afloat assets requires the involvement on many activities at the naval station. Naval Station Norfolk supports more than ten primary mission functions while providing a number of other services such as a medical and dental treatment facility designed to meet the needs of thousands of service members in the Hampton Roads area. • 42. The Black Walnut Tree Figurative Language In The Roots There is a conflict between practicality and sentimentality conveyed through the use of both literal and figurative language by poet Mary Oliver in The Black Walnut Tree. There is an alternation from a debate between mother and daughter rationalizing reasons of selling the black walnut tree that sits in the family s backyard in order to pay off their mortgage, to the symbolic viewing and characterization of the tree as a reflection of the family s history and what value it holds to further generations. Despite the whip crack of the mortgage experienced every month, cutting down the black walnut tree would be a heinous deception on the family s heritage. The literal language used in the beginning of the free verse does not imply the tree having any symbolic meaning to the speaker and her mother. It is casually said My mother and I debate, we could sell the black walnut tree...[to] pay off the mortgage which defines that in these lines the tree has not yet been introduced with its symbolic purpose.
