clear definition of what Scrooge looks like. The adjectives that Dickens uses aren t describing him as

Dickens focuses on temperature, when doing this he emphasises how cold hearted Scrooge really is.
No warmth could warm, no wintry weather could cool him. This shows the reader that Scrooge is as
cold as he could ever be and nothing can change him. Dickens also uses a pathetic fallacy, he uses the
weather to describe Scrooges character. The heaviest rain, and snow, and hail, and sleet, could boast of
the advantage over him in only one respect. Dickens uses the harshest weather to describe him,
showing the reader how horrible of a man Scrooge is, using a pathetic fallacy clearly shows the reader
how important Scrooges personality is throughout the book. From this extract the reader knows that

Depression this lens was most clear to all. This goes hand in hand with the story of To Kill a

illustrate credibility. One speech, in particular, is the one Atticus gives in trail while talking to Mayella
Ewell about tempting a negro . Atticus stated, She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did
something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man (Lee 272). By stating this in front
of the jury, it shows his authority over the people to pull their attention to the situation at hand; along

when she was younger.
Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird , Lee applies pathos to encourage the readers to feel the emotions
she faced during her childhood. Harper Lee tells the story through Jean Louise s standpoint, a young
girl living in the time of the Depression. By doing this, the readers see more of an innocent
perspective and observe the emotions Jean and the people withstand, midst the Depression to
emotionally provoke the reader to feel bad for what they went through. One event in particular that
draws in the reader is the final speech made by Atticus at the end of the trial against Tom Robinson.
