Business Planning And Talent Management
Assignment 1 (Trends in Workforce Planning and Talent Management) Social Media in
Workforce Planning The forms and procedures of recruiting have changed drastically in the
United States over the years. One of the newer ways potential employers are recruiting is
through social media. In a 2015 survey conducted by Society for Human Resource Management,
84 percent of organizations are using some type of social media for recruiting (Maurer, 2016).
The study also found that organizations are looking for candidates not actively looking for a
new job, or employees also called passive candidates (Maurer, 2016). From Facebook to
LinkedIn, social media has been used for networking, branding and reputation, job searching, job
posting, and screening potential employees. Platforms of Social Media There are various
different platforms for social media used in workforce planning. For example, Twitter, Facebook
and LinkedIn are the major social media platforms used. LinkedIn is the preferred platform for
organization due it being a sole professional website. LinkedIn has become the most popular and
effective site for recruiting (Maurer, 2016). The main purpose of LinkedIn is recruiting and
networking within companies. Direct contact can be made with a recruiter, potential employee or
company without applying for the position. Recruiters can also review profiles and invite
promising candidates to apply. Organizations are also able to pay LinkedIn to have their open job
postings

The Famine Of The Great Plains
In the 1930 s one of the most devastating environmental catastrophes occurred in the United
States. It was called the Dust Bowl . This decade long drought, of the Great Plains, was caused
by inappropriate and poor farming practices. Not only was there a drought; there was also a
severe economic depression that was occurring as well. This combination of economic failure
and the drought led to a desolate land, lost lives, misplaced workers, and lose of crops and
livestock. The time in history is known as one of the worst man made disasters ever. The lessons
learned from these mistakes should be just as important today as it was in the 1930 s. For
example, the expectancy of food production will need to be doubled by 2050 to keep up... Show

Even though there were only a small percentage of farmers exposed to these luxuries the Sooner
State was still a horse and wagon and dirt road farming state. (Fite)
By the late 1920 s there was a severe drop in farm prices that severely affected all American
agriculture. Oklahoma farmers were among those hardest hit. The prices for cotton, wheat, and
livestock, the main source of agricultural income, drastically dropped. This caused a cost price
squeeze for farmers because the products that farmers had to buy remained the same. These
conditions intensified among Oklahoma farmers who believed that the large corporate and
financial institutions had become their oppressors. However hard the economic struggle was for
farmers in the agricultural depression of the 1920 s, the onset of the Great Depression in 1929 and
1930 created even worse conditions. The farm commodity prices had dropped to disastrous
levels by 1931 and 1932. Cotton had fell to five cents a pound and wheat brought as little as
thirty cents a bushel. Other livestock and crops dropped as well; peanuts declined to as low as
$1.60 for one hundred pounds, or about one and one half cents a pound. The gross income of all
Oklahoma farm production, both crops and livestock, dropped from $314 million in 1929 to $115
million in 1932. Farmers during this time had lowered their

Under Armour Competitive Forces
According to our text, there are 5 competitive forces that help shape strategy: competition from
existing players, supplier bargaining power, customer bargaining power, threat of new players, and
threat of substitutes. (Thompson, Peteraf, Gamble Strickland, 2017).
Competition
Under Armour faces competition from Nike, the Adidas Group, as well as any new players.
Nike and the Adidas Group are larger corporations and therefore have more resources to develop
new products.
Supplier bargaining power
Having an assortment of suppliers reduces bargaining power
Customer bargaining power
Under Armour have customers from large retail chains, which gives them name recognition. These
large retail chains have some level of bargaining power.

increased, the net income increased greater than expenses. In 2011, total assets were 919,201 and
grew to 2,868,900 by 2015.
Nike has the highest competitive strength when compared to Under Armour and the Adidas Group.
The Adidas Group has the next highest competitive strength and Under Armour is up and coming.
The size of Nike and the Adidas Group is a competitive advantage over Under Armour. However,
Under Armour is definitely a competitor for Nike and the Adidas Group. Under Armour is getting
more and market share and name recognition.
1.Labor Bringing Under Armour into the international market requires management to address the
issue of labor. U.S. customer could view Under Armour as using cheap labor in various countries.
2.Environmental Today most everyone is concerned about the environment. Plank and the
management team need to address the issue of making certain their products and materials are

The Importance Of Occupational Injuries In Patient Care
Healthcare works are experiencing injuries from moving and handling patients. Research by the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, shows healthcare workers often experience musculoskeletal disorders
(MSDs) at a rate exceeding that of workers in construction, mining, and manufacturing). Injuries are
becoming a problem due to repeated manual patient handling activities. The patient handling usually
involves heavy manual lifting associated with transferring and repositioning patients. The problem
of lifting patients is compounded by the increasing weight of patients to be lifted due and the
rapidly increasing number of older people who require assistance with the activities of daily living.
This is such an important issues affecting healthcare that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Twelve percent of nurse s report that they left the nursing profession because of back pain
(Stubbs, et al., 2007). Since, the United States (US) is facing a nursing shortage predicted to be
30% by 2020, reducing injuries and protecting the health of the healthcare workers should be a
priority for all Health system organizations (HSO). Senior leadership also needs to make sure
they have addressed the epidemic of obese patients. There needs to be a process in place and
equipment available to address the needs of a growing population.
2.How can middle management be convinced that this is an important problem? Middle
management needs to address this problem at a unit level. The same way there are policies,
processes, and protocols to prevent patient falls, there needs to be the same process to prevent staff
injury. They need to keep up with the number of injuries on each unit and have them to display
them on the unit. Management needs to encourage, promote and foster a culture of safety on their
units and throughout the organization. Management should promote transparency when it comes to
reporting unsafe conditions or practices. This allows for open communication and feedback from
staff. They should make sure the unit is safe ergonomically. There also needs to be training for staff
members to educated them about the importance of staff safety, preventing injuries and the use of
lifting equipment. Management could

Analysis Of Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness
Shelly Pyakurel
Ellen Stockstill
English 4 DC
27 April 2015
Research Paper
Heart of Darkness is a novel by Joseph Conrad that centers on Marlow, a man who goes to the
Congo for a job opportunity. He meets a man named Kurtz, who is well known by many. Once he
gets to the Congo, he sees colonialism first hand. He sees that the natives of the country were
practically enslaved and forced to work under very harsh conditions. The two major characters of
the novel are Marlow and Kurtz. There are many minor characters throughout the novel as well.
The novel shows readers how black men and women are referred to in such animalistic terms. Not
even describing them as humans, but savages. They are not given any names, to the point to that
they have no identity. When Marlow speaks about England, he describes it to be a dreary. Dreary
indeed as imperialism is brought to light in this novel. Ultimately, Marlow becomes complicit in the
genocide and the madness in the Congo, choosing to conceal what he has discovered in Africa to
protect the naivete of a lady. (Baker).
Joseph Conrad implies that there is really no difference between black and white; that black
people are just less advanced than whites. This idea is not really on the same terms with equality
or humanistic values, but for that time and day, Conrad had differing views from most people.
Most Anglo men and women from that period believed black people to be savages and primitive.
The first character to be analyzed in this

Examples Of Multiculturalism In Canada
Multiculturalism in Canada Of all the countries in the world, Canada is the most diverse nation. In
1971, Canada was the first country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as an official policy
(Government of Canada). The passion of Canadian diversity is evident in several short stories. A
multitude of perspectives informs the content of our literature. Canadaexpresses that we respect and
learn from cultures, accept people for their differences, and are able to combine belief systems.
Canadian identity will never be divided because it is based on many diverse cultures. Firstly,
Canadian short stories emphasize that, we respect and learn from the diversity in the cultures
throughout the nation. As shown in the reading of the story,... Show more content on

Many cultures make up Canada, which proves why diversity has been so important in shaping
the country. Some cultures have many beliefs based on their religion. What you believe as an
individual can change another person or yourself forever. In the text, Grateful, Jenny gave
Murray her graduation gift, which was a pen, stating she thinks he would be able to use it. He
later stopped searching for a teaching job, [I] withdrew my resumГ©s from my consideration and

Murray that he can write instead of a teaching job (Wiersema,45). Believing in others could
influence their future. Canadian identities are shaped by the lifestyles learned in their family
homes. Only until Mom gets better, Raven is taking care of his Mom and being a responsible
child. (Bruyere, 95). Family is an important influence in many cultures in Canada. Many cultures
have different beliefs which makes them diverse, but the beliefs combined is what makes Canada
diverse as a whole. Canadians value their various life styles which are defined by their own
traditions and beliefs. Our cultural beliefs influence the way we experience important life
transitions such as birth, marriage and death. The Anishinaabe culture believes in respect of elders.

The Myth Of Poverty In Adam Smith s Shop-Happy
The real tragedy of the poor is the poverty of their aspirations, said Adam Smith. The quote above
sheds light upon the primary driving force behind the conspicuous poverty that currently plagues
American society and its citizens alike. Whether it be the further exacerbation of an indigent
individual s lifestyle or augmented power rendered to the commonplace bon vivant, the vicious
circle of povertyseemingly appears to be an indelible taint on America s rather diverse mosaic of
individuals. From the gruesome working conditions endured by impoverished Americans to the
immense profits garnered by affluent storeowners, the nation remains fixated in an economics
oriented rudimentary state: a reality directly intertwined to a dearth of bona... Show more content on

Evidence from the article Shop Happy that further bolsters this claim is shown when the author
states, Wanting to acquire the things that we see and like is as natural as breathing. Babies want to
touch things, taste them, bash them against the wall. We appease them with shining objects,
distract them with new toys (Smith). The quote above sheds light upon how counterfeit values,
namely those interconnected to the fostering of avarice among Americans, exacerbate financial
situations to a noteworthy degree, thus yielded a drastic escalation in the numbers of
underprivileged individuals. Delving deeper into the specifics, the blatantly obvious sense of
egocentrism exercised by affluent coteries of American citizens perpetuates the nation s fixation
in an economically rudimentary state, with poorer individuals striving to remain socially
tantamount with the affluent. In addition to the inevitable vicissitudes of a stereotypical wage
slave lifestyle, the widespread desire to cope with the capricious state of the American economy
furthermore aggrandizes the burden placed upon the impoverished. Yet another driving force
behind the nearly ubiquitous state of poverty that prevails in America today is exemplified
when Schlosser, in her novel In The Strawberry Fields, states, In Watsonville, three to four
families will share a small house, seven or eight people to a room. Migrants routinely pay $100
to $200 a month to sleep in a garage with anywhere from four to ten other people. Despite the
hardships that accompany the job, there is an oversupply of people hoping to pick strawberries.
Another constant worry is finding a place to sleep (Schlosser 433). The quote above epitomizes the
over appreciative attitudes commonly embraced by the working poor, to a point where the factor
transforms into a mere anathema

Sociology and Emile Durkheim
Compare and contrast the theories and methods of Emile Durkheim and Max Weber regarding
social behavior.
1.Introduction
Emile Durkheim and Max Weber are founding fathers of sociology and outstanding sociologists
who made great contributions to the development of sociology and progress of human beings.
Previous studies have been done about the theories and methods of Durkheim and Weber, and their
works have also been studied for many times from different viewpoints, such as the nature of human
and social world, their mutual unawareness of each other and so on. However, few studies have
been done to compare and contrast their thoughts and methodologies on social behavior. This essay
examines Durkheim and Weber s theories and methods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Durkheim made attempts to figure out whether human behavior was caused by social structures
instead of mental state (Benton and Craib, 2001, P.25). He collected a vast array of statistics on
suicide rates and he showed that suicide rates were not caused by non social factors, such as race,
genetics, mental disorder, climate, season and so on. He went on to argue that suicide rate were
caused by social factors such as religious faith, marital status, income and employment and so on.
As suicide rates in different countries and different categories of people were different, Durkheim
compared them and showed that there was a remarkable constancy Protestants had higher suicide
rates than Catholics, and Catholics higher rates than Jews. By collecting statistics and comparing
suicide rates in different countries, Durkheim confirmed the existence of social facts.
3.Max Weber s theory and method regarding social behavior
Max Weber (1864 1920) is a German sociologist and one of the key thinkers of Interpretivism.
Interpretive approaches see the real world as being socially constructed and we interpret the world
around us. Max Weber, with Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim, is regarded as one of the three
founding fathers of sociology. His theory concerned with social behavior is Social Action. In the
process of studying social action, Weber used Verstehen as a method and used Ideal Types as a tool.

My Journey To The World Essay
Gateway To The World
Traveling isn t in everyone s favor, but it sure is in mine. British novelist, Lawrence Durrell once
quoted, Travel can be one of the most rewarding forms of introspection. The reason I enjoy
traveling is because it takes me on a journey for finding my inner self. Before traveling, I ve
always been closed minded at how I viewed the world, but once I got a bigger look at how the
world works, my thoughts and I, myself have changed. It all begins on a sweltering day in
Schertz, Texas. My mom had received a phone call that was certain to come at some point. The
person on the other side of the phone informed her that we would have to travel to Turkey and
live there for 2 years. Since I was 5 years old at the time, I thought traveling to foreign countries
every now and then was normal for every family. There were trucks coming and going, suit case
zippers zipping, and chaos all around me. One month later, I m was on a plane headed to this
unknown country that was too far away for the impatient self that I am. Eager to march out of the
plane, I was at last at the final destination. As I looked around the AdanaAirport, people looked
different and their clothing was divergent as they wore dilapidated shirts and pants. Entering the
real world of Turkey, transportation mainly consisted of grimy metro buses and bikes. The
atmosphere smelled like thousands of Burger King Whoppers were trampled on with a side of six
week old onion rings. After all the luggage

The Mongol Empire And The Empire Of The Mongol Empire
Mongols Chinggis Khan founded the Mongol Empire in 1206 A.D. this was the rise of nomadic
pastoral societies in the north. The Mongol s established the largest contiguous empire in the
Neolithic era. The Mongol Empire was notable for their military power, their diplomatic
protection, and safe travel. These notable features aided the growth and expansion of the empire.
The Mongols conquest left a trail of blood and destruction. For a century, the Mongol Empire
cultivated for the first time East West contact. I will further discuss the primary sources and
secondary sources of the Mongol Empire. The Mongols encouraged trade and often moved
craftsmen and other specialists from one place to another. Trade was essential to the Mongols,
they started issuing a paizi (modern day passports) to government officials, foreigners they
traded with, and the nobles who would travel along the Mongol territory. The Mongol Empire
encouraged a wider distribution of good and idea, so officials made sure the travel routes were
as safe as possible. In addition, commodities such as silk could be purchased at lower prices
because the cost of travel and security decreased. The primary reason for these passports was to
ensure safety along the trade routes of the Mongol empire. The paizi is a metal plaque made of
iron and silver inlay, it had to worn around the neck, so it was visible. The inscription says, by the
strength of eternal heaven, an edict of the Emperor. He who has not respect shall

Professor Achilles
Ottawa University
Abstract
The goal of this essay is to focus on theory and implementation of the Balanced Scorecard system.
Because of the structured generic approach of the methodology, the Balanced Scorecard has gained
its popularity as means of evaluating performance and reporting quantitative performance results.
The balanced scorecard is a strategic planning and management system that is used extensively in
business and industry, government, and nonprofit organizations worldwide to align business
activities to the vision and strategy of the organization, improve internal and external
communications, and monitor organization performance against strategic goals (The Balanced
Scorecard Institute, 2014). The Balanced Scorecard is the most prevalent and adopted of the several
strategic performance tools since the early 1990s. In addition, the derivatives of the Balanced
Scorecard such as Performance Prism and Results Based Management have also gained prominence
in the field of strategic performance management and improvement. The Balanced Scorecard
commenced as a performance management tool that incorporated strategic non financial
performance measures to the conventional financial indicators in order to provide managers and
company executives with a somewhat balanced view of the aspect of organizational performance.

What Is The Hypothesis Of Second Language Acquisition
Introduction Language acquisition theory (TAKE OFF)
Through the linguistic lenses, Stephen Kristen created an article based on second language
acquisition theories on how humans develop an additional language and/or languages. Several
hypotheses that exist on this topic, but one of them is relevant to how a second language is
acquired. The Acquisition Learning Hypothesis broadly emphasises two different languages can be
acquired: 1) acquire the language, 2) learn the language (Krashen, p. 1). This article states that
language acquisition ...subconsciously. While it is happening, we are not aware that it is
happening. We think we are having a conversation, reading a book, watching a movie. Of course,
we are, but at the same time, we might be acquiring language. (Krashen, p. 1). Kristen indicates
that acquisition is essentially picking up a language. And it is. For instance, when someone says,
I was in Germany for a bit and I picked up some German. It means he or she acquired that
language. Language is commonly defined as the ability to communicate in a second language.
Kristen states that it is ...a conscious process: When we are learning, we know we are learning and
we are trying to learn... When grammar, rules and pronunciation are involved, we are talking about
learning (Ibid).
There have been differences found in how adults retrieve information in the stages of second
language learning such as how adults are faster to produce language two (L2) words from language

Understanding Hypnosis
I feel it useful to provide a definition of hypnotherapy as well as hypnosis before moving on and
answering this question of this essay. Linnenkamp Doyle writes, hypnotherapy is the use of
hypnosis to treat disease something that she documents in her case study. This medical idea of
hypnosis needs further exploration in terms of how it has evolved and sparked debate amongst
medical and dental practitioners. Four very significant hypnotherapists are arguably Mesmer, Braid,
Esdaile and Elliotson, all putting emphasis on the medical aspect of hypnotherapy. Mesmer, for
example, devoted his 1779 27 Propositions concerning animal magnetism.
Closer to modern day, in his book Hypnotherapy, Dave Elman not only concentrates on relaxation (a

So, I will now move onto describing the psychological and physiological effects of hypnosis. Robin
Waterfield provides a valid list of this when he describes a high degree of rapport between the
hypnotist and subject , use of the imagination and also the generation of expectations within the
subject s mind. As we can see in Linnenkamp Doyle s case study of hypnotherapy as a cure for
blindness below, these expectations ideally relate to the suggestions imposed upon the subject of
hypnosis. The suggestions and expectations will often relate to factors such as the cure or severity
of a disease suffered by the subject or the lack of pain during dental procedures undergone by the
subject.
It is clear from the effects listed by Waterfield, that the psychological and physiological effects of
hypnotherapy are highly linked to the state of receptivity and power of suggestion in the subject
and hypnotist.
Relaxation is both an effect of hypnotherapy and part of its principals. In terms of the latter,
relaxation on the part of the subject of hypnotherapy facilitates the receptivity that we have seen to
be desirable for the optimal success of hypnotic techniques. Relaxation also constitutes a boundary
between hypnosis and meditation. As Waterfield explains, some studies have shown that both
meditation and hypnosis have similar effects on the autonomic systems: a reduced

Righteousness Of God Analysis
The phrase righteousness of God has left scholars searching for exactly what Paul is trying to
describe in verse 17 of Romans 1. This phrase is actually the epitome of Paul s message in his
letters and requires all the attention it is receiving. Commentators look at the historical and social
context to understand what Paul was trying to say. Since Paul s letters were to be read aloud to the
congregation, they had to be clear enough so that there would be no need to stop and contemplate.
Quite ironically, this is now where we find ourselves today, turning our wheels trying to figure out
exactly what Paul meant when he said the righteousnessof God . We are going to look at two main
interpretations first, the subjective and the objective, then the last interpretation of this verse, which
I agree with, that actually turns all the other arguments on their heads.
Let it be mentioned that the interpretations for these are from a theological point of view, whereas
later I will be discussing the same phrase from a linguistic point of view. The first interpretation is
that the righteousness of God is a saving act. Barrett puts it best in saying that salvation means the
operation of his righteousness. This is making righteousness a verb, not his attribute but Him being
righteous in that he will vindicate those who deserves it. Relating it back to it s Old Testament
meaning, early Judaism understands over everything else, that God will create prosperity and

Prediction of Clean Coal Using Mathematical Models
The productivity of a plant depends on the variables presents and how they are controlled or
manipulated in order to achieve the desired results with minimum production cost. This can be
achieved by modeling mathematical equations to understand the behavior of the process and also
predict the behavior of the system if certain changes are introduced. In summary, engineers need to
model processes if they are going to design or develop those processes. In the practices of
engineering design, models are often applied to predict what will happen in a future situation.
However, the predictions are used in ways that have far different consequences than simply
anticipating the outcome of an experiment (What Is Mathematical Model). We obtain the response
of a system to the sum of the specific inputs by superposing the separate responses of the system to
each individual input. This principle is used to predict the response of a system to a complicated
input by breaking down the input into a set of simpler inputs that produce known system responses
or behaviors.
This research is aimed at finding possible ways of controlling different variables that affect the
production (in terms of quantity and quality) of a clean coal product through mathematical
equations. The main objectives are to determine the existence of a relationship between the input
and output operational variables based on the Plant information. The washability curve is also used
based on its accurate information about

Diversity in Society
Everyone is likely to experience some form of discrimination or prejudice; as is anyone capable of
acting prejudiced towards others. On April 5th, 1968, a teacher in Riceville, Iowa named Jane
Elliot conducted an experiment with her third grade class that dealt with the concept of
discrimination; and was documented in Peters 1985 A Class Divided . The exercise originally
took place the day after Martin Luther King was assassinated. The documentary is an eye opener to
the world of racism and discrimination. Bucher (2010) describes racism as discrimination based on

Susan, whom has brown eyes, remembered her glasses. Elliot also led the children to decide
that since blue eyed Greg said he likes to hit his litter sister, this conveys blue eyed people are
naughty. From here, we witness some of superior blue eyed kids began to act arrogant and bossy
to the inferior brown eyed kids. Blue eyed Russell was taunting John at recess, calling him

that responding with violence is ineffective and a waste of time and energy. They compared it to

creditors. Iceland s combination of a flexible exchange rate and a policy of closing its failed banks
appears to have served the country well in the aftermath of the financial crisis.
Banking crises in Iceland and Ireland came to a head at the height of the financial crisis in
September and October 2008. These countries took quite different approaches in dealing with these
difficulties. Ireland and Iceland are small island countries with many ... Show more content on

A substantial part of the expansion of the banks loan portfolios were loans collateralized by
Icelandic corporate stock. As a result, the value of Icelandic stock was an important determinant
of the value of the banks loans and, therefore, assets. The value of shares rose and then peaked in
mid July 2007. By July 2008, share prices had fallen to less than half their value at the peak. This
loss in collateral value naturally called into question the probability of lenders being able to repay
their loans.
The expansion of banking in Iceland reflected growth of both domestic and foreign deposits. Banks
in Iceland opened branch offices in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands to gather deposits
there. They also expanded by acquiring other institutions.
The banks increased their funding by obtaining short term loans from other financial institutions for
example, money market funds in the United States. Such funding from other financial
intermediaries is often called wholesale funding. A risk of wholesale funding is rollover risk
lenders may decide not to roll over these short term loans when they mature, especially if they
become concerned about the borrower s solvency.
At the time, Icelandic banks were acquiring funds in the United States, the United Kingdom, and
the euro area each with a different currency, and all with a different currency than the Icelandic
krГіna. As a result of this borrowing in other currencies, Icelandic banks were subject

The Roles Of Emma s Emma And Her Father
Emma and her father
Mr. Woodhouse is a sickly person whose main concern is his ill health a nervous man, easily
depressed (5). While we are told that Emma dearly loved her father, he also was no companion for
her. He could not meet her in conversation, rational or playful (24). Mr. Woodhouse demonstrates
excessive hypochondria and a constant demand for attention that are provided unflaggingly by
Emma; In a striking reversal, she functions as his parent, caring for his needs and guiding him with
her superior understanding and emotional strength. Though much older than his daughter, Mr.
Woodhouse cannot provide her with the figure of authority, wisdom, and strength. Instead, he looks
to her for leadership and comfort. Consequently, Emma infantilizes the old man, she forever shields
her father against critique and thereby sustains his dependence. In return, Mr. Woodhouse heralds
Emma as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mr. Knightley says to Mrs. Weston: ever since she was twelve, Emma has been mistress of the
house and of you all. In her mother she lost the only person able to cope with her. She inherits her
mother s talents, and must have been under subjection to her (48). Emma then is linked to her
mother as similar in temperament and talent and, presumably, in her capacity to control Mr.
Woodhouse. With the mother gone, a force of subjection, and with very little evidence to suggest
this absence as in any way traumatic to Emma. Emma s intellect and sagaciousness allow her
control of the estate, free of any rivals from within the family, and now embodies the location of
phallic signification. This authority extends beyond the household, however, because Hartfield
itself is already acknowledged by the community as the first in consequence (25). Emma s situation
allows for the Oedipal dynamic to be symbolically gratified while simultaneously giving her
preeminent status in the community.

Short Story Marigolds
Eugenia Collier uses diction and imagery to create the voice of her narrator, Lizabeth, in her
short story Marigolds. Lizabeth has a negative tone in the beginning of the story. The imagery
she stated, When I think of my hometown, all that I seem to remember is dust the brown
crumbly dust of late summer arid, sterile dust that gets into the eyes and makes them water
(Collier)... proves that she is unhappy to be in that place. There are a lot of reasons why she is
unhappy in that place and one of them is poverty. Lizabeth hinted that one of their struggles was
poverty when she said Poverty is a cage in which we all are trapped, and our hatred of it was still
the vague, undirected restlessness of the zoo bred flamingo who knows that nature created him to
fly flee (Collier). Lizabeth established the juxtaposition when she said, And one other thingI
remember, another incongruency of memory a brilliant splash of sunny yellow against the dust
Miss Lottie s marigolds(Collier). She is stating that Miss Lottie s marigolds were the only
beautiful thing in that unsightly place. Those marigolds did not give her a pleasant feeling
because she thought that they were too beautiful to exist in that kind of place. Miss Lottie was
believed to be a witch when Lizabeth was young but she knows she is mature enough not believe
in those things anymore. Their first encounter resulted in Lizabeth and her company destroying
some of Miss Lottie s marigolds and they left Miss Lottie and John Burke, her son, enraged. When
she got home and went to her room hoping to rest after a long day, she overheard her parents
talking. She heard her dad say, Twenty two years, Maybelle, twenty two years...and I got nothing
for you, nothing, nothing (Collier). She then realized that her father got fired from his job and was
not taking it too well after what they have been through. Maybelle, Lizabeth s mother, attempted to
comfort her husband by saying, Honey, you took good care of us when you had it. Ain t nobody
got nothing nowadays (Collier). After a while of discussion Lizabeth s father began to sob, loudly
and painfully. At this point, LIzabeth is confused because she never heard a man cry before. She
did not even know that men cry.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Ultrasound
Ever since the beginning of medicine, diagnostic procedures were mainly invasive, meaning that the
patient was cut open, resulting in an excruciating amount of pain for the diagnosis of some simple
conditions, such as pneumothorax and appendicitis. This practice was usual for centuries up until
the early 20th century where the use of waves, electromagnetic or not, in medicine began.
One type of the waves used was the ultrasound wave. The ultrasound waves, are sound waves with
a frequency higher than that of the audible human hearing range (Rouse, What Is Ultrasound?
Definition from WhatIs.com ). The idea of first applying the ultrasound for medical diagnostic
purposes accord simultaneously in more than one country in the world, however the best
documented one was in 1957 in Glasgow, Scotland by the Scottish physician Professor Ian Donald

Weighing both the positives and the negatives of the ultrasound all together, it has still made a
major breakthrough in the medical field. Where simple diagnostics can be carried out within a

means that a gifted persons ability to tell the difference between the goals, assignment and mission

Unicellular Organelles
Now, what does it do you may be asking? These tiny things provide a lot for many unicellular
eukaryotes. The main function of both of these organelles is movement which is powered by
ATP. Cilia beat in unison on the outside of the cell in a whip like motion. Flagella have a
rotational movement which makes them also act as whips to allow cells to swim through fluids.
Cilia allows the cells to move through water, being locomotor appendages. Also, when the cilia is
a part of a cellthat is bound to one place, they will aid in the movement of water over itself. Other
than movement, cilia and flagella act as sensory organelles, receiving information from outside the,

The Environmental Lobby and Voting Trends in the United States
The environmental movement in the United States has typically focused its resources on public
education, legislative lobbying and litigation. However, the movement s success in the latter two is
highly dependent on the quality and character of elected officials. Successful public education on

This paper discusses national trends that impact and influence the environmental lobby s ability to
achieve favorable electoral results, and the manner in which the lobby has responded to those
trends. Overall, the American public is receptive to environmentalism, but the political realm is ...

From 1988 to 1992 40 50% of strong Republicans supported increased federal spending on the

After 1994, independent leaning Republicans and weak Republicans increased their support for
decreased environmental spending by roughly 10 percentage points each, bringing each group to 12
13% support for decreased spending. Strong Republicans, however, moved from about 2 8% to
roughly 23% support for decreased environmental spending. Again, these changes indicate the
highly partisan nature of support for decreased environmental spending. The Republican Revolution
of 1994 brought a much more Conservative flavor to the Republican Party. Strong Republicans
would be more likely to toe the party line on issues like environmental spending, and post 1994, the
Republican Party line was arguably more anti environmentalist. This willingness among strong
Republicans to carry the party line on environmental issues may be partly responsible for the
widening gap between some groups of traditional Republicans.
Republicans showed their strongest support for environmental spending in 1988, the year after
President Reagan signed the Montreal Protocol. Here again, a sign that strong Republicans may be
following party cues more than individual preferences on environmental issues. The nation as a
whole was more supportive of environmental spending in 1988 than in most years, but even strong

The Dutch Republic
Introduction The Dutch republic came to be when part of the Netherlands separated from Spanish
rule in 1579 and gained international recognition in 1648. It was characterized by its high
population density (which is a continuity to this day), and its early, high level of urbanization. From
the 16th to 18th centuries, the Dutch rose to power comparable to even Britain and France. This
was also the period of time when world trade flourished and linked continents, acquiring the name
global trade. In fact, the Dutch republic experienced such growth and improvement that the 17th
century was the Dutch golden age. During the golden age, trade, military, art, and science
flourished. This all led to a domination in trade, production of ships, etc.
Western Europe After the split of the Roman Empire, the western half fell as the east prospered.
Then in the medieval period, the catholic western European states emerged stronger than ever,
causing the distinction between roman catholic/protestant vs eastern orthodox in Europe. Western
Europe was made up of competitive states that came to play major roles. The Dutch republic
managed to become largely influential and powerful through trade. As previously mentioned,
competitiveness was and still is a characteristic of Western Europe. Since the Dutch focused on ship
building to support the trade they were beginning to be a part of.
Through this time period emerged the Columbian exchange and some European states also took an

Success of the Ancient Roman Empire Essay
Between approximately 509 BCE and the third century CE the Roman empire continually
expanded and became one of the largest in history. While this expansion was due to many reasons,
not the least of which was greed, to a great extent it was made possible because of Rome s
overwhelming military and its combination of a democratic and republic government. (Lee) (Ferril)
Many of Rome s successes were due to its highly trained and disciplined army. Rome s army
became the best in the known world. The Roman army was organized into divisions of soldiers
according to their social class. The ranks of the army could be divided into five classes. The first
class were those who were the most well off, they were equipped with the best weapons, ... Show

Some examples of these would include The Battering Ram, The Turris, and The Ballista. The
Roman army was also very willing to incorporate the war tactics and the weapons of their
defeated enemies if they were deemed beneficial. (Alchin) These improvements provided the
Roman army advantages in battle. The Roman generals that were picked to lead the army were
highly skilled in the art of war. They were masters of attack and counterattacks, the use of mounted
and unmounted calvary as well as archery. As a result of the Roman army s successful tactics,
Rome therefore was able to achieve massive amounts of territory and assemble a substantial empire.
(Cavazzi)
As Rome expanded throughout Europe and acquired a growing number of citizens, the army was
able to greatly increase its numbers. This ensured Rome a nearly unlimited supply of new soldiers.
As Rome conquered communities, more and more people were becoming Romanized, and
noticed as Roman citizens. Of course these new citizens were expected to pay taxes, allowing the
empire to grow economically as well as militarily. During the Roman rule of Augustus, Caesar and
Trajan, Rome s laws were continually improved making Rome ever more powerful and ethical.
(Ferril)
Throughout the rise and fall of the Roman empire, the government was a combination of a
democracy and republic. Starting with Romulus, Rome was first ruled by a series of seven kings
until 509 BCE when Rome constructed itself a Republic til

Helen Keller Metaphor
Helen Keller, who was born on June 27th, 1880 and died June 1st, 1968, was one of the most
important people of her time. She accomplished so much in fields such as literature and politics.
The fact that she was able to do so much with her life is impressive not only in the fact that she
was a woman, but more impressive due to the fact that she became blind and deaf at only
eighteen months old. Through the help of Anne Sullivan though, Keller, was able to learn so
much. This short story, The Day Language Came into My Life, is an excerpt from her
autobiography, where she recalls her memories from when she first learned about language. In
her story, Keller, uses a unique metaphor to describe what it was like going from no language to
having a language. She does this by comparing herself to a boat in a dense fog with no compass or
sounding line, who was just lost at sea in a tangible darkness, and then the light came into her
world. This light that meant so much to Keller was the love of her teacher, Anne Sullivan.... Show

One of the most prominent examples is when she smashes the doll on the ground because she
had not loved the doll because in that world she had not known love. Later in the story though
after she has learned of love she goes back to the doll she has destroyed and for the first time
feels sorrow. The doll represents Keller and how before the light comes she is angry and broken
but then after the light she feels more complete, even though the doll doesn t get fixed completely.
One other example is the time when she feels water and learns what it is called, and suddenly feels
awakened, hopeful, and even free. All in all, Helen Keller s use of metaphor is very effective in
describing her experience. Through her metaphor she conveys how language and love come into
her life and push out all of the fog and completely change her world for the better, giving her hope,

issues creates a daunting task for political strategists, leaving them to decide what information is
relevant and essential for the voting public to know, in order to rally the voters to support a
certain candidate. However, these mountains of facts and opinions can turn off voters, and scare
away many potential supporters, forcing political strategists to also engage the emotional lives of
the populace: enter the role of cultural narratives tales of adventure, sacrifice, defeat, and victory
grabbing hold of the emotional lives of the audience, and as George Lakoff points out, ...politics is
about the narratives of our culture and our... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The message next takes on a more subtle tone of character and costuming with the entrance of
the banker: a man in a clean suit, with a shiny car, and a big cigar, a perfect juxtaposition of the
dirty, tattered farmers, a man very well off forcing those struggling and fighting in their day to
day lives off the land which they used to create a meager living. Having been forced off their
land and with nowhere else to turn, Tom Joad, his family, and John Casey head to California
with dreams of a better life, only to have these dreams smashed upon the rocks of corporate
greed. The Joad family arrives to find the worker camps destitute and hungry, with no food even
for the children of the camp, and with the works not allowed in town. It seems as though no area
of California will present better options, for when the Joad family arrives at the first farm with
work available there is a throng of workers on strike outside the farm because the wealthy ranch
owners promised a wage of five cents a box, but with the overabundance of workers, the owners
only offer two and a half cents per box: more underhanded industry on the part of big business. The
anti corporate message is not the only facet of the liberal narrative; for perhaps more importantly
the liberal narrative focuses on the characters and the trials and

A Dog Is A Man s Best Friend
Over the years it has been said that a dog is a man s best friend. A friend that has been
domesticated ever since the beginning of time, bringing about many different breeds throughout
the world from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier. The connections received from these loyal
animals have proven to be a huge benefit physically, emotionally, and socially. It is no surprise
that we have trained dogs to perform complex tricks to entertain the public or train them to save
lives. Dogs that are trained to assist people with disabilities such as visual impairment, post
traumatic stress disorder, diabetes, seizure disorder, mental illness, and mobility impairment are
called service dogs.
However, certain dogs have been excluded as service dogs because of being labeled as the
dangerous breed. Some dangerous breeds should not be excluded from being trained to do the same
job as other breeds that are considered safe breeds. A service dogis a regular everyday dog that was
trained to perform tasks to help people with disabilities. People already feel that there are only
specific breeds such as Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, or German Shepherds that can be
service dogs. However, this is not factual according to the Fair Housing Act. Breed, size, and weight
limitations may not be applied to an assistance animal. (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development).
There are many different disabilities that require many different needs. The German Shepard is one

Immigration and Crime Rates in the United States
I. INTRODUCTION:
The study I am researching examines if there is a positive correlation between crime rates and
immigration in the United States. A report from the Department of Justice in 2014 found, almost
50% of federal crimes were committed near the Mexican border. Of the 61,529 criminal cases
initiated by federal prosecutors last fiscal year .
One third of Americans consider immigrants to be the cause of increased violent crimes Data
shows citizens with a higher population of immigrants like New York are known as crimeridden in
mainstream media. Data shows from the Federal Bureau of Investigations the foreign born are very
underrepresented.
It is no surprise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There has been problems that have been brought about by the perception of illegal immigration
increasing violent crime rates. The significance of this study will provide academic research and
government research on, rather or not an immigrant crime and the increase of homicide rates in
America. Data shows conflicting data in this study as some data shows data that confirms illegal
immigrants have a positive impact on homicide while other reports indicated that there is no
correlation to the fluctuation in crime rates. Large cities that have high numbers of Hispanics have
been studied, to determine if homicides in those has increased in violent crime rates. An
examination of this study is important because lowering crime rates is important to U.S citizens.
Data shows about 22% of inmates in prison are immigrants out of the 8 million

What I Learned About My Life
I knew I forgot to do something yesterday. The feeling had followed me like a shadow all day
long, but by the time that I closed my eyes with the moon s light all too visible through the thick
gaps of my window s shades, I thought it to be simple paranoia leftover from finally finishing high
school. Now that I m two feet away from Miss Mariam s back gate, however, I suddenly realize
what I was supposed to do. I was supposed to drop off that pie to the new neighbor. It s all coming
back to me now, even if it s a bit too late for me to actually be able to do anything. When I was
running late to catch curfew two days ago, Miss Mariam had caught me for a hurried second with
a pie in her hand and told me to bring it to the new girl that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Everything is completely fine. Uh huh, she says. She doesn t mean it, but she doesn t press the
issue any farther. The two of us head to her backyard and out from the corner of my eye, I see her
quickly glance at me with her head hilted. From this angle, she doesn t look as old as she normally
does. She would hate for me to even mention it out loud, but she s more than thirty years my senior.
The South Carolina summer heat causes a little bit of sweat to pool at various places on her aging
faces, creating a hazy effect on the familiar age and laughter lines. Oddly enough to some
people, the wrinkles there are what makes Miss Mariam look as good as she does. Friendlier
perhaps is a better word. It s a visual sign of the number of years that she s been on this planet
and the amount of wisdom those years have given her. I don t say of it out loud, instead
choosing to focus on shielding my eyes from the violent sun and noting where the latest round
of weeds have started to make their debut around the edges of the barbed fence. Even though I
help her tend to her garden every week on the dot, the greenery never fails to come back with a
vengeance and this day is no different. What do you even feed your lawn? This amount of keep
up can t be normal. I offhandedly mumble the words as I start to make my rounds of ripping the
little nuances out of the ground, but I ve never been good at lowering my voice on any occasion,
so Miss Mariam shoots me a glare.

Being The Only Child
I was always so content with being the only child, I got everything and my parent s attention was
always focused on me. The world revolved around me, but I felt lonely most of the time and
longed to have a little sibling throughout my younger years. That longing lasted until I was about
nine and as I got older the idea of ever having a younger siblingbecame perverse. He or she would
be so annoying and instead of having fun with them, I would have to take care of them. That was
something I didn t want. Then it happened. I was twelve years old when my mom and dad sat me
down with the news that I was going to be an older brother. It was October 13, 1995 when my little
brother Christopher was born. He was an odd looking little thing and I wanted nothing more than to
return him, but my mom said that was not possible. We were stuck with him. It was a tough
transition, going from an old child to having to share everything with Chris. He demanded so much
attention and that bothered me greatly. Familycame from far and close to see him when before
visits were exclusive to seeing me. My dad, working as a commercial fisherman, couldn t wait to
take little Chris to the boats when he was old enough. My mom, a once working woman, now
devoted all her time to taking care of Chris. She had quit her job once she found out Chris was
on his way. Now that he was here, she spent her days at home taking care of Chris and on her free
time she would read Miss America by Howard Stern which was the

Redefining Heroism Throughout The Language Of The Brag
Samuel Ballantyne

Redefining Heroism in the Language of the Brag
Sharon Olds author of the Language of the Brag, suggests through her experience in the poem that
our society and culture altogether is male dominated towards achievement and focused more for
men s success and heroism. Men are typically known for their strength and courage, especially
heroic acts in society. When things are expected to get done, it s naturally expected for the guy to
do it. And through her use of repetition and tone in the Language of the Brag the author describes
certain attributes that she once lacked to later achieving in the poem. Significantly, Olds uses
repetition to make a statement from I have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is also poetic action depicted in the poem, in which the writer establishes her longing to
perform an act of heroism or extraordinary achievement. I think my biggest surprise was her
casual use of sexual language, using a vibrating cock as a metaphor, and later using the knife
reference again saying she was stabbed in her inner sex. Sharon Olds speaks so fiercely about the
woman s body, that you feel she s almost competing against the constant objectivity against the
woman s body. You can tell she speaks from experience, she s watched the boys play and all she
wants is to show them that she has suffered as a woman and is better for it. She s stronger,
prouder, and for that reason has a right to brag and redefine heroism.
The middle of the poem is crucial because Sharon Olds is able to link heroism to the act of birth.
It is also where the speaker changes her statement from I have wanted to I have. Sharon Olds
does this by using graphic images to emphasize her point in the act of birth. She states, my inner
sex/ stabbed again and again with terrible pain like a knife./ I have lain down./ I have lain down
and sweated and shaken/ and passed blood and feces and water and/ slowly alone in the center of
a circle I have/ passed the new person out (lines 19 25). This transition I have wanted to I have is
important not only because its shows the author s new found strength through the process of the
act, Olds herself is finally the center of

  • 2. Business Planning And Talent Management Assignment 1 (Trends in Workforce Planning and Talent Management) Social Media in Workforce Planning The forms and procedures of recruiting have changed drastically in the United States over the years. One of the newer ways potential employers are recruiting is through social media. In a 2015 survey conducted by Society for Human Resource Management, 84 percent of organizations are using some type of social media for recruiting (Maurer, 2016). The study also found that organizations are looking for candidates not actively looking for a new job, or employees also called passive candidates (Maurer, 2016). From Facebook to LinkedIn, social media has been used for networking, branding and reputation, job searching, job posting, and screening potential employees. Platforms of Social Media There are various different platforms for social media used in workforce planning. For example, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn are the major social media platforms used. LinkedIn is the preferred platform for organization due it being a sole professional website. LinkedIn has become the most popular and effective site for recruiting (Maurer, 2016). The main purpose of LinkedIn is recruiting and networking within companies. Direct contact can be made with a recruiter, potential employee or company without applying for the position. Recruiters can also review profiles and invite promising candidates to apply. Organizations are also able to pay LinkedIn to have their open job postings ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Famine Of The Great Plains In the 1930 s one of the most devastating environmental catastrophes occurred in the United States. It was called the Dust Bowl . This decade long drought, of the Great Plains, was caused by inappropriate and poor farming practices. Not only was there a drought; there was also a severe economic depression that was occurring as well. This combination of economic failure and the drought led to a desolate land, lost lives, misplaced workers, and lose of crops and livestock. The time in history is known as one of the worst man made disasters ever. The lessons learned from these mistakes should be just as important today as it was in the 1930 s. For example, the expectancy of food production will need to be doubled by 2050 to keep up... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though there were only a small percentage of farmers exposed to these luxuries the Sooner State was still a horse and wagon and dirt road farming state. (Fite) By the late 1920 s there was a severe drop in farm prices that severely affected all American agriculture. Oklahoma farmers were among those hardest hit. The prices for cotton, wheat, and livestock, the main source of agricultural income, drastically dropped. This caused a cost price squeeze for farmers because the products that farmers had to buy remained the same. These conditions intensified among Oklahoma farmers who believed that the large corporate and financial institutions had become their oppressors. However hard the economic struggle was for farmers in the agricultural depression of the 1920 s, the onset of the Great Depression in 1929 and 1930 created even worse conditions. The farm commodity prices had dropped to disastrous levels by 1931 and 1932. Cotton had fell to five cents a pound and wheat brought as little as thirty cents a bushel. Other livestock and crops dropped as well; peanuts declined to as low as $1.60 for one hundred pounds, or about one and one half cents a pound. The gross income of all Oklahoma farm production, both crops and livestock, dropped from $314 million in 1929 to $115 million in 1932. Farmers during this time had lowered their ... Senior leadership also needs to make sure they have addressed the epidemic of obese patients. There needs to be a process in place and equipment available to address the needs of a growing population. 2.How can middle management be convinced that this is an important problem? Middle management needs to address this problem at a unit level. The same way there are policies, processes, and protocols to prevent patient falls, there needs to be the same process to prevent staff injury. They need to keep up with the number of injuries on each unit and have them to display them on the unit. Management needs to encourage, promote and foster a culture of safety on their units and throughout the organization. Management should promote transparency when it comes to reporting unsafe conditions or practices. This allows for open communication and feedback from staff. • 6. Analysis Of Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness Shelly Pyakurel Ellen Stockstill English 4 DC 27 April 2015 Research Paper Heart of Darkness is a novel by Joseph Conrad that centers on Marlow, a man who goes to the Congo for a job opportunity. He meets a man named Kurtz, who is well known by many. Once he gets to the Congo, he sees colonialism first hand. He sees that the natives of the country were practically enslaved and forced to work under very harsh conditions. The two major characters of the novel are Marlow and Kurtz. There are many minor characters throughout the novel as well. The novel shows readers how black men and women are referred to in such animalistic terms. Not even describing them as humans, but savages. They are not given any names, to the point to that they have no identity. When Marlow speaks about England, he describes it to be a dreary. Dreary indeed as imperialism is brought to light in this novel. Ultimately, Marlow becomes complicit in the genocide and the madness in the Congo, choosing to conceal what he has discovered in Africa to protect the naivete of a lady. (Baker). Joseph Conrad implies that there is really no difference between black and white; that black people are just less advanced than whites. This idea is not really on the same terms with equality or humanistic values, but for that time and day, Conrad had differing views from most people. Most Anglo men and women from that period believed black people to be savages and primitive. The first character to be analyzed in this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A multitude of perspectives informs the content of our literature. Canadaexpresses that we respect and learn from cultures, accept people for their differences, and are able to combine belief systems. • 8. The Myth Of Poverty In Adam Smith s Shop-Happy The real tragedy of the poor is the poverty of their aspirations, said Adam Smith. The quote above sheds light upon the primary driving force behind the conspicuous poverty that currently plagues American society and its citizens alike. Whether it be the further exacerbation of an indigent individual s lifestyle or augmented power rendered to the commonplace bon vivant, the vicious circle of povertyseemingly appears to be an indelible taint on America s rather diverse mosaic of individuals. From the gruesome working conditions endured by impoverished Americans to the immense profits garnered by affluent storeowners, the nation remains fixated in an economics oriented rudimentary state: a reality directly intertwined to a dearth of bona... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Evidence from the article Shop Happy that further bolsters this claim is shown when the author states, Wanting to acquire the things that we see and like is as natural as breathing. Babies want to touch things, taste them, bash them against the wall. We appease them with shining objects, distract them with new toys (Smith). The quote above sheds light upon how counterfeit values, namely those interconnected to the fostering of avarice among Americans, exacerbate financial situations to a noteworthy degree, thus yielded a drastic escalation in the numbers of underprivileged individuals. Delving deeper into the specifics, the blatantly obvious sense of egocentrism exercised by affluent coteries of American citizens perpetuates the nation s fixation in an economically rudimentary state, with poorer individuals striving to remain socially tantamount with the affluent. In addition to the inevitable vicissitudes of a stereotypical wage slave lifestyle, the widespread desire to cope with the capricious state of the American economy furthermore aggrandizes the burden placed upon the impoverished. Yet another driving force behind the nearly ubiquitous state of poverty that prevails in America today is exemplified when Schlosser, in her novel In The Strawberry Fields, states, In Watsonville, three to four families will share a small house, seven or eight people to a room. Migrants routinely pay $100 to $200 a month to sleep in a garage with anywhere from four to ten other people. Despite the hardships that accompany the job, there is an oversupply of people hoping to pick strawberries. Another constant worry is finding a place to sleep (Schlosser 433). The quote above epitomizes the over appreciative attitudes commonly embraced by the working poor, to a point where the factor transforms into a mere anathema ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sociology and Emile Durkheim Compare and contrast the theories and methods of Emile Durkheim and Max Weber regarding social behavior. 1.Introduction Emile Durkheim and Max Weber are founding fathers of sociology and outstanding sociologists who made great contributions to the development of sociology and progress of human beings. Previous studies have been done about the theories and methods of Durkheim and Weber, and their works have also been studied for many times from different viewpoints, such as the nature of human and social world, their mutual unawareness of each other and so on. However, few studies have been done to compare and contrast their thoughts and methodologies on social behavior. This essay examines Durkheim and Weber s theories and methods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Durkheim made attempts to figure out whether human behavior was caused by social structures instead of mental state (Benton and Craib, 2001, P.25). He collected a vast array of statistics on suicide rates and he showed that suicide rates were not caused by non social factors, such as race, genetics, mental disorder, climate, season and so on. He went on to argue that suicide rate were caused by social factors such as religious faith, marital status, income and employment and so on. As suicide rates in different countries and different categories of people were different, Durkheim compared them and showed that there was a remarkable constancy Protestants had higher suicide rates than Catholics, and Catholics higher rates than Jews. By collecting statistics and comparing suicide rates in different countries, Durkheim confirmed the existence of social facts. 3.Max Weber s theory and method regarding social behavior Max Weber (1864 1920) is a German sociologist and one of the key thinkers of Interpretivism. • 11. My Journey To The World Essay Gateway To The World Traveling isn t in everyone s favor, but it sure is in mine. British novelist, Lawrence Durrell once quoted, Travel can be one of the most rewarding forms of introspection. The reason I enjoy traveling is because it takes me on a journey for finding my inner self. Before traveling, I ve always been closed minded at how I viewed the world, but once I got a bigger look at how the world works, my thoughts and I, myself have changed. It all begins on a sweltering day in Schertz, Texas. My mom had received a phone call that was certain to come at some point. The person on the other side of the phone informed her that we would have to travel to Turkey and live there for 2 years. Since I was 5 years old at the time, I thought traveling to foreign countries every now and then was normal for every family. There were trucks coming and going, suit case zippers zipping, and chaos all around me. One month later, I m was on a plane headed to this unknown country that was too far away for the impatient self that I am. Eager to march out of the plane, I was at last at the final destination. As I looked around the AdanaAirport, people looked different and their clothing was divergent as they wore dilapidated shirts and pants. Entering the real world of Turkey, transportation mainly consisted of grimy metro buses and bikes. • 12. The Mongol Empire And The Empire Of The Mongol Empire Mongols Chinggis Khan founded the Mongol Empire in 1206 A.D. this was the rise of nomadic pastoral societies in the north. The Mongol s established the largest contiguous empire in the Neolithic era. The Mongol Empire was notable for their military power, their diplomatic protection, and safe travel. These notable features aided the growth and expansion of the empire. The Mongols conquest left a trail of blood and destruction. For a century, the Mongol Empire cultivated for the first time East West contact. I will further discuss the primary sources and secondary sources of the Mongol Empire. The Mongols encouraged trade and often moved craftsmen and other specialists from one place to another. Trade was essential to the Mongols, they started issuing a paizi (modern day passports) to government officials, foreigners they traded with, and the nobles who would travel along the Mongol territory. The Mongol Empire encouraged a wider distribution of good and idea, so officials made sure the travel routes were as safe as possible. In addition, commodities such as silk could be purchased at lower prices because the cost of travel and security decreased. The primary reason for these passports was to ensure safety along the trade routes of the Mongol empire. The paizi is a metal plaque made of iron and silver inlay, it had to worn around the neck, so it was visible. The inscription says, by the strength of eternal heaven, an edict of the Emperor. Ritchie Managerial Accounting BUS 7800 Professor Achilles Ottawa University Abstract The goal of this essay is to focus on theory and implementation of the Balanced Scorecard system. Because of the structured generic approach of the methodology, the Balanced Scorecard has gained its popularity as means of evaluating performance and reporting quantitative performance results. The balanced scorecard is a strategic planning and management system that is used extensively in business and industry, government, and nonprofit organizations worldwide to align business activities to the vision and strategy of the organization, improve internal and external communications, and monitor organization performance against strategic goals (The Balanced Scorecard Institute, 2014). The Balanced Scorecard is the most prevalent and adopted of the several strategic performance tools since the early 1990s. In addition, the derivatives of the Balanced Scorecard such as Performance Prism and Results Based Management have also gained prominence in the field of strategic performance management and improvement. The Balanced Scorecard commenced as a performance management tool that incorporated strategic non financial performance measures to the conventional financial indicators in order to provide managers and company executives with a somewhat balanced view of the aspect of organizational performance. • 14. What Is The Hypothesis Of Second Language Acquisition Introduction Language acquisition theory (TAKE OFF) Through the linguistic lenses, Stephen Kristen created an article based on second language acquisition theories on how humans develop an additional language and/or languages. Several hypotheses that exist on this topic, but one of them is relevant to how a second language is acquired. The Acquisition Learning Hypothesis broadly emphasises two different languages can be acquired: 1) acquire the language, 2) learn the language (Krashen, p. 1). This article states that language acquisition ...subconsciously. While it is happening, we are not aware that it is happening. We think we are having a conversation, reading a book, watching a movie. Of course, we are, but at the same time, we might be acquiring language. (Krashen, p. 1). Kristen indicates that acquisition is essentially picking up a language. And it is. For instance, when someone says, I was in Germany for a bit and I picked up some German. It means he or she acquired that language. Language is commonly defined as the ability to communicate in a second language. Kristen states that it is ...a conscious process: When we are learning, we know we are learning and we are trying to learn... When grammar, rules and pronunciation are involved, we are talking about learning (Ibid). There have been differences found in how adults retrieve information in the stages of second language learning such as how adults are faster to produce language two (L2) words from language ... • 16. Understanding Hypnosis I feel it useful to provide a definition of hypnotherapy as well as hypnosis before moving on and answering this question of this essay. Linnenkamp Doyle writes, hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis to treat disease something that she documents in her case study. This medical idea of hypnosis needs further exploration in terms of how it has evolved and sparked debate amongst medical and dental practitioners. Four very significant hypnotherapists are arguably Mesmer, Braid, Esdaile and Elliotson, all putting emphasis on the medical aspect of hypnotherapy. Mesmer, for example, devoted his 1779 27 Propositions concerning animal magnetism. Closer to modern day, in his book Hypnotherapy, Dave Elman not only concentrates on relaxation (a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So, I will now move onto describing the psychological and physiological effects of hypnosis. Robin Waterfield provides a valid list of this when he describes a high degree of rapport between the hypnotist and subject , use of the imagination and also the generation of expectations within the subject s mind. As we can see in Linnenkamp Doyle s case study of hypnotherapy as a cure for blindness below, these expectations ideally relate to the suggestions imposed upon the subject of hypnosis. The suggestions and expectations will often relate to factors such as the cure or severity of a disease suffered by the subject or the lack of pain during dental procedures undergone by the subject. It is clear from the effects listed by Waterfield, that the psychological and physiological effects of hypnotherapy are highly linked to the state of receptivity and power of suggestion in the subject and hypnotist. Relaxation is both an effect of hypnotherapy and part of its principals. In terms of the latter, relaxation on the part of the subject of hypnotherapy facilitates the receptivity that we have seen to be desirable for the optimal success of hypnotic techniques. Relaxation also constitutes a boundary between hypnosis and meditation. As Waterfield explains, some studies have shown that both meditation and hypnosis have similar effects on the autonomic systems: a reduced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Yes, the death of Curley s wife, due to Lennie s strength and nervousness, was something major that lead to the cause of the occurrence, but in this scene, it is to which George s thoughts were accurately correct in taking out Carlson s Luger and handling it well. • 18. Righteousness Of God Analysis The phrase righteousness of God has left scholars searching for exactly what Paul is trying to describe in verse 17 of Romans 1. This phrase is actually the epitome of Paul s message in his letters and requires all the attention it is receiving. Commentators look at the historical and social context to understand what Paul was trying to say. Since Paul s letters were to be read aloud to the congregation, they had to be clear enough so that there would be no need to stop and contemplate. Quite ironically, this is now where we find ourselves today, turning our wheels trying to figure out exactly what Paul meant when he said the righteousnessof God . We are going to look at two main interpretations first, the subjective and the objective, then the last interpretation of this verse, which I agree with, that actually turns all the other arguments on their heads. Let it be mentioned that the interpretations for these are from a theological point of view, whereas later I will be discussing the same phrase from a linguistic point of view. The first interpretation is that the righteousness of God is a saving act. Barrett puts it best in saying that salvation means the operation of his righteousness. This is making righteousness a verb, not his attribute but Him being righteous in that he will vindicate those who deserves it. Relating it back to it s Old Testament meaning, early Judaism understands over everything else, that God will create prosperity and salvation in His ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Prediction of Clean Coal Using Mathematical Models The productivity of a plant depends on the variables presents and how they are controlled or manipulated in order to achieve the desired results with minimum production cost. This can be achieved by modeling mathematical equations to understand the behavior of the process and also predict the behavior of the system if certain changes are introduced. In summary, engineers need to model processes if they are going to design or develop those processes. In the practices of engineering design, models are often applied to predict what will happen in a future situation. However, the predictions are used in ways that have far different consequences than simply anticipating the outcome of an experiment (What Is Mathematical Model). We obtain the response of a system to the sum of the specific inputs by superposing the separate responses of the system to each individual input. This principle is used to predict the response of a system to a complicated input by breaking down the input into a set of simpler inputs that produce known system responses or behaviors. This research is aimed at finding possible ways of controlling different variables that affect the production (in terms of quantity and quality) of a clean coal product through mathematical equations. The main objectives are to determine the existence of a relationship between the input and output operational variables based on the Plant information. On April 5th, 1968, a teacher in Riceville, Iowa named Jane Elliot conducted an experiment with her third grade class that dealt with the concept of discrimination; and was documented in Peters 1985 A Class Divided . The exercise originally took place the day after Martin Luther King was assassinated. The documentary is an eye opener to the world of racism and discrimination. Bucher (2010) describes racism as discrimination based on the belief that one race is superior to another (97). According to Bucher (2010) discrimination is defined as the ... Elliot also led the children to decide that since blue eyed Greg said he likes to hit his litter sister, this conveys blue eyed people are naughty. From here, we witness some of superior blue eyed kids began to act arrogant and bossy to the inferior brown eyed kids. Blue eyed Russell was taunting John at recess, calling him brown eyes and John retaliated by hitting him. After the two boys fought at recess the teacher asked if responding with violence made him feel better, he replied no. His answer goes to show that responding with violence is ineffective and a waste of time and energy. They compared it to someone calling a black man the N word. Even academic achievement goes up when the children were in the superior group. When doing the card packs the first day the brown eyed children spent five and half minutes to go through the deck, while the superior blue eyed children spent only three minutes, the following day the superior group of brown eyed students took only two and a half minutes compared to the four minutes and eighteen seconds of the inferior blue eyed group. By July 2008, share prices had fallen to less than half their value at the peak. This loss in collateral value naturally called into question the probability of lenders being able to repay their loans. The expansion of banking in Iceland reflected growth of both domestic and foreign deposits. Banks in Iceland opened branch offices in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands to gather deposits there. They also expanded by acquiring other institutions. The banks increased their funding by obtaining short term loans from other financial institutions for example, money market funds in the United States. The imagery she stated, When I think of my hometown, all that I seem to remember is dust the brown crumbly dust of late summer arid, sterile dust that gets into the eyes and makes them water (Collier)... proves that she is unhappy to be in that place. There are a lot of reasons why she is unhappy in that place and one of them is poverty. Lizabeth hinted that one of their struggles was poverty when she said Poverty is a cage in which we all are trapped, and our hatred of it was still the vague, undirected restlessness of the zoo bred flamingo who knows that nature created him to fly flee (Collier). Lizabeth established the juxtaposition when she said, And one other thingI remember, another incongruency of memory a brilliant splash of sunny yellow against the dust Miss Lottie s marigolds(Collier). She is stating that Miss Lottie s marigolds were the only beautiful thing in that unsightly place. Those marigolds did not give her a pleasant feeling because she thought that they were too beautiful to exist in that kind of place. Miss Lottie was believed to be a witch when Lizabeth was young but she knows she is mature enough not believe in those things anymore. Their first encounter resulted in Lizabeth and her company destroying some of Miss Lottie s marigolds and they left Miss Lottie and John Burke, her son, enraged. When she got home and went to her room hoping to rest after a long day, she overheard her parents talking. She heard her dad say, Twenty two years, Maybelle, twenty two years...and I got nothing for you, nothing, nothing (Collier). The Power of the Liberal Narrative Trudging through the mountains of facts, studies, and opinions relevant to social and political issues creates a daunting task for political strategists, leaving them to decide what information is relevant and essential for the voting public to know, in order to rally the voters to support a certain candidate. However, these mountains of facts and opinions can turn off voters, and scare away many potential supporters, forcing political strategists to also engage the emotional lives of the populace: enter the role of cultural narratives tales of adventure, sacrifice, defeat, and victory grabbing hold of the emotional lives of the audience, and as George Lakoff points out, ...politics is about the narratives of our culture and our... The message next takes on a more subtle tone of character and costuming with the entrance of the banker: a man in a clean suit, with a shiny car, and a big cigar, a perfect juxtaposition of the dirty, tattered farmers, a man very well off forcing those struggling and fighting in their day to day lives off the land which they used to create a meager living. Having been forced off their land and with nowhere else to turn, Tom Joad, his family, and John Casey head to California with dreams of a better life, only to have these dreams smashed upon the rocks of corporate greed. The Joad family arrives to find the worker camps destitute and hungry, with no food even for the children of the camp, and with the works not allowed in town. It seems as though no area of California will present better options, for when the Joad family arrives at the first farm with work available there is a throng of workers on strike outside the farm because the wealthy ranch owners promised a wage of five cents a box, but with the overabundance of workers, the owners only offer two and a half cents per box: more underhanded industry on the part of big business. A friend that has been domesticated ever since the beginning of time, bringing about many different breeds throughout the world from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier. The connections received from these loyal animals have proven to be a huge benefit physically, emotionally, and socially. It is no surprise that we have trained dogs to perform complex tricks to entertain the public or train them to save lives. Dogs that are trained to assist people with disabilities such as visual impairment, post traumatic stress disorder, diabetes, seizure disorder, mental illness, and mobility impairment are called service dogs. However, certain dogs have been excluded as service dogs because of being labeled as the dangerous breed. Some dangerous breeds should not be excluded from being trained to do the same job as other breeds that are considered safe breeds. A service dogis a regular everyday dog that was trained to perform tasks to help people with disabilities. People already feel that there are only specific breeds such as Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, or German Shepherds that can be service dogs. However, this is not factual according to the Fair Housing Act. Breed, size, and weight limitations may not be applied to an assistance animal. (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development). The feeling had followed me like a shadow all day long, but by the time that I closed my eyes with the moon s light all too visible through the thick gaps of my window s shades, I thought it to be simple paranoia leftover from finally finishing high school. Now that I m two feet away from Miss Mariam s back gate, however, I suddenly realize what I was supposed to do. I was supposed to drop off that pie to the new neighbor. It s all coming back to me now, even if it s a bit too late for me to actually be able to do anything. When I was running late to catch curfew two days ago, Miss Mariam had caught me for a hurried second with a pie in her hand and told me to bring it to the new girl that... The two of us head to her backyard and out from the corner of my eye, I see her quickly glance at me with her head hilted. From this angle, she doesn t look as old as she normally does. She would hate for me to even mention it out loud, but she s more than thirty years my senior. The South Carolina summer heat causes a little bit of sweat to pool at various places on her aging faces, creating a hazy effect on the familiar age and laughter lines. Oddly enough to some people, the wrinkles there are what makes Miss Mariam look as good as she does. Friendlier perhaps is a better word. It s a visual sign of the number of years that she s been on this planet and the amount of wisdom those years have given her. I don t say of it out loud, instead choosing to focus on shielding my eyes from the violent sun and noting where the latest round of weeds have started to make their debut around the edges of the barbed fence. Even though I help her tend to her garden every week on the dot, the greenery never fails to come back with a vengeance and this day is no different. What do you even feed your lawn? This amount of keep up can t be normal. I offhandedly mumble the words as I start to make my rounds of ripping the little nuances out of the ground, but I ve never been good at lowering my voice on any occasion, so Miss Mariam shoots me a glare. ... The world revolved around me, but I felt lonely most of the time and longed to have a little sibling throughout my younger years. That longing lasted until I was about nine and as I got older the idea of ever having a younger siblingbecame perverse. He or she would be so annoying and instead of having fun with them, I would have to take care of them. That was something I didn t want. Then it happened. I was twelve years old when my mom and dad sat me down with the news that I was going to be an older brother. It was October 13, 1995 when my little brother Christopher was born. He was an odd looking little thing and I wanted nothing more than to return him, but my mom said that was not possible. We were stuck with him. It was a tough transition, going from an old child to having to share everything with Chris. He demanded so much attention and that bothered me greatly. Familycame from far and close to see him when before visits were exclusive to seeing me. My dad, working as a commercial fisherman, couldn t wait to take little Chris to the boats when he was old enough. My mom, a once working woman, now devoted all her time to taking care of Chris. She had quit her job once she found out Chris was on his way. Now that he was here, she spent her days at home taking care of Chris and on her free time she would read Miss America by Howard Stern which was the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Redefining Heroism Throughout The Language Of The Brag Samuel Ballantyne Dr. Van Aken English 152 Final Essay 5/3/2017 Redefining Heroism in the Language of the Brag Sharon Olds author of the Language of the Brag, suggests through her experience in the poem that our society and culture altogether is male dominated towards achievement and focused more for men s success and heroism. Men are typically known for their strength and courage, especially heroic acts in society. When things are expected to get done, it s naturally expected for the guy to do it. And through her use of repetition and tone in the Language of the Brag the author describes certain attributes that she once lacked to later achieving in the poem. Significantly, Olds uses repetition to make a statement from I have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is also poetic action depicted in the poem, in which the writer establishes her longing to perform an act of heroism or extraordinary achievement. I think my biggest surprise was her casual use of sexual language, using a vibrating cock as a metaphor, and later using the knife reference again saying she was stabbed in her inner sex. Sharon Olds speaks so fiercely about the woman s body, that you feel she s almost competing against the constant objectivity against the woman s body. You can tell she speaks from experience, she s watched the boys play and all she wants is to show them that she has suffered as a woman and is better for it. She s stronger, prouder, and for that reason has a right to brag and redefine heroism. The middle of the poem is crucial because Sharon Olds is able to link heroism to the act of birth. It is also where the speaker changes her statement from I have wanted to I have. Sharon Olds does this by using graphic images to emphasize her point in the act of birth. She states, my inner sex/ stabbed again and again with terrible pain like a knife./ I have lain down./ I have lain down and sweated and shaken/ and passed blood and feces and water and/ slowly alone in the center of a circle I have/ passed the new person out (lines 19 25). This transition I have wanted to I have is important not only because its shows the author s new found strength through the process of the act, Olds herself is finally the center of ...
