The document provides an in-depth analysis of the opening sequence of the film "House at the End of the Street" through examining its camera work, mise-en-scene, editing, sound, iconography, narrative conventions, representation, and intended audience. It analyzes how the camera focuses on close-ups of the girl's face and eyes to suggest she is not mentally stable. The lighting, colors, and props are used to create a dark and suspenseful tone. Jump cuts and tense sounds are edited in to build tension. The sequence subverts narrative expectations by starting with a violent act and uses horror stereotypes like an innocent-seeming young girl killer.
To present my Audience responses, I created a Twitter account. Here is an analysis of that Twitter account, what interactions I did upon it and why I did these.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
3. Camera Work
The opening sequence of ‘House at the End of the Street’ starts with extreme close up
of girl looking through snowball. The camera is focusing on the house inside and then
on her blue eye. The director did this to show the innocence of the little girl. Then the
shot changes to close up revealing her face that looks like she is looking directly into
the camera. However the shot changes to the point of view to reveal what she is
looking at, in this shot the camera is moving or zooming in towards the lamp focusing
and getting out of focus to show that the girl’s brain is calculating something. This
suggest us that she is not mentally stable. Then the shot is changing from close up of
her face to close up of her walking towards the door. In the next shot the camera is
showing extreme close up of her eyes and lips. Then it changes to the point of view
focusing on the lamp. When she pushes the lamp the shot changes from high angle
shot of her parents sleeping to her again and to the parents that are awake, which can
suggest that something like this happened to them before.
4. Next shot reveals her mum walking towards the door to check what was the
noise. The director used lots of point of view shots that are moving or
zooming in towards the objects to suggest that the girl in not mentally stable.
Later on the director used the mid-shot to reveal the girl killing her mother.
The shots changes form her killing her mother and her dad looking at the
door. That was used to create suspense as he doesn’t know what she is
doing. Then shots are changing from the camera that is moving slowly
towards the door pointing at the door handle and close up of her dad looking
at the door. This was used to create tension. When the tension builds up the
shot changes to mid-shot of her running towards her father. Then the next
shot doesn’t show her killing her father but there is a camera under the bed
showing feathers covered in blood coming out of the pillow which suggest
that she killed him. The last shot of this opening sequence shows her
running into the darkness.
5. Mise-en-scene
The lighting in House at the End of the Street is very dark adding the suspicious
tone through out the opining sequence. As well as the director decided to use
the thunder and lighting in his opening sequence as it keeps the audience on the
edge, because people mostly link thunder storms with something scary. The is
little bit of performance in the opening sequence and we can focus the girl as she
looks like the main character. Because throughout the whole opening sequence
she is not saying anything that makes her the strange and not mentally stable. As
well as she keeps her head tilted which makes her look like an evil. The colours
used in House at the End of the Street’s opening sequence are: black, white
(lightening) and orange (the lamp) which creates a very good contrast between
good and bad. There are lots of props used in the opening sequence. The whole
opening sequence happen in the house, one of the important prop is the lamp as
it shows the aggression of the girl when she pushes it. Another important prop is
the hammer that is used to kill both parents, I think that the director decided to
use the hammer, rather than a gun to add more realism to this film as hammers
are easily accessible at home. As well as the use of hammer is also more brutal,
and makes the violent act more aggressive. At the end the are feathers covered
in blood to show the death of her dad and make the audience feel sorry for him.
6. Editing
The director decided to use continuity editing in the opening sequence of House at the
End of the Street, which creates a continuity of narrative without the audience having
to watch events in real time which would be boring to watch. Most of the transitions
used in House at the End of the Street’s opening sequence are cuts. They are most
common methods in linking shots together. In this opening sequence the shots are not
longer than 3 seconds to maintain the tense atmosphere and the energy within the
scene. Most of the shots are out of focus or are moving which looks like something is
controlling the girl as most of those shots are the point of view. In the final scene the
director decided to use jump-cut technique to scare the audience as they were
expecting something to happen when the door handle moved but they didn’t know
when it will happen. The font used in this opening sequence is placed on black
background which can suggest death, but more important is that the film title changes
form normal font to childish handwriting. This foreshadows that this film will be about
children in some way but the audience doesn’t know what will happen to them. The
font is also written in a childish scrawl, which is very creepy-looking and adds to the
unsettling nature of the opening sequence.
7. Sound
In House at the End of the Street’s opening sequence the
director used mixture of diegetic and non-diegetic sound effects.
The non-diegetic sound effect is used to add the dramatic
effects. When the girl is looking though snow ball they used calm
non-diegetic sound to make the girl innocent as audience isn't
expecting anything bad to happen. When she places the ball on
the shelf the sound changes to more tense sound to add the
tension effect and the face of the girl is revealed. This help the
audience create first impression of this character and also sets
up the mood. As well as we can hear diegetic sound which is
thunder and lightening that also create tension. Also the sound of
thunder is used in lots of films to foreshadow something bad to
happen.
8. Iconography
The opening sequence of House at the End of the
Street contains lots of iconography that can link to our
genre which is thrillers. One of the example can be
the girl that brutally murder her parents using a
hammer which is a normal everyday use item. There
was no chainsaws which more relate to horrors.
Another example can be that the girl disappear in the
forest which creates mystery at the beginning of this
film.
10. House at the End of the Street goes against Todorov’s
narrative structure as it starts with disequilibrium because
the girl kills her parents. That helped the director set up
the mood of the whole film. The pleasure that the
audience receive watching this film is visceral pleasure
as there are not a lot to solve like in intellectual pleasure
types of films. The character types used in this opening
sequence are stereotypical family with mum and dad
that live in the house and look happy.
12. There are lots of horror stereotypes in House at the
End of the Street’s opening sequence. For example
the killer is a young girl. The director used this
because young girls are mostly linked with
innocence, so that makes the audience think and
also create shock effect. Another example is that this
family was portrayed as normal without any
problems. The aggressive little girl contrasts sharply
with the stereotypically ‘normal’ parent characters.
This makes the violence very disturbing, as it all
takes place within the family home, a place that is
normally safe.
14. I think that House at the End of the Street would
attract mass audience over the age of 15 as this
film is not very brutal and scary. Primary target
audience is most likely to be male and female,
but I think mostly females as the main character
is Jenifer Lawrence that attract lots of her fan
base. The main audience by looking at
psychographics will be the mainstreamers as they
seek security, but we can also include explores as
the seek discovery and adventure.
