Audience Research
Introduction to Audience Research
My audience for my music video will be teenagers aged 13+. It will be aimed
at both males and females and it will be for people who enjoy comedy
Drama and entertainment.
The video is going to involve a story, a character and action. It will focus on
the character and the story more than the action. The main character is
going to be a villain and the storyline is going to be quite dark.
I have an idea of what song to use, but I'm going to make a survey asking
people what kind of songs hey listen to, what genre they prefer and what do
they like about the videos, and what elements they like (e.g. slapstick). This
will give me a better idea of what the audience like and what they might
want to see in the video.
Survey Questions
1. What type of music do you listen to? (Heavy Metal, Pop, Classic,
Pulp)
2. What do you like about the videos? (storytelling, characters, action)
3. What do you want to see more of in the video? (action, storytelling)
4. What elements do you want to see in a music video? (Slapstick,
Drama, Comedy Drama, Romance)
Survey Results Question 1: What Gender are
you? Observation
From the results so far, 50 % of people are males and
50% of people are female.
Survey Results Question 2: How old are you?
From the results of Question 2, most people are aged
between 18 and 24 years old.

Shine By Years and Years
Shine storyline
The storyline was quite dark and spooky. It was suspenseful throughout
because there were a lot of things happening in the house and there
was no explanation to why they were happening. For example, the
remote control cars were driving along the floor, something was
controlling them, but we don’t know what because there’s no shot of
someone using a remote control to move them. Also, later on in the
video, the fridge was broken into and all the food was all over the floor,
and there is no explanation behind it. I found this interesting because it
made me wonder how it happened. I want to do something that is
suspenseful in my music video, and this has given me some ideas.
Shine video analysis
In this shot, the lighting is muted because it’s not bright,
but it’s not too dark either. Also, the lighting is diffused
because it’s shining through the mist effect. The light
shines at the back of his head, and his face is kept in
darkness which raises a question of ‘What is he up to?’
The camera is looking at the subject from eye level at the
back of his head. Also, it’s looking at him from an angle so
the audience can see the outline of his face.
The subject is wearing dark clothing which represents evil.
The smoke covers up what he could be up to, and it doesn’t
allow the audience to see his surroundings.
In the next shot, the same person re-
appears wearing a different costume and
is in a different location. This suggests that
he is playing two different characters.
The camera is looking at him a far shot
and zooms in on him as he rolls over to his
left. Also, the shot is a deep focus because
everything in the room is in focus.
Shine video analysis
The camera is looking at the subject from a birds eye view because it’s
looking straight down at him. In this shot, he looks depressed, and the
emotion links in with the lyrics ’I remember us alone, waiting for the
night to go’. This implies that he is remembering something that’s
happened in the past.
The background colours are quite dull which create the depressing
setting and mood.
The lighting is quite effective because it focuses on his face which
makes it clearer to see his emotion. Also, the lighting gives it a slightly
warm feeling because of the colour of it.
The composition of the subject makes this shot clear to understand.
He’s lying on a bed looking up at the ceiling, looking depressed which
shows he is thinking about something.
This shot shows that something is
happening in the house, but we don’t
know what because the shot only shows
light shining into the corridor.
The camera is positioned at the other end
of the corridor, and the corridor is in the
centre of the frame.
Shine video analysis
This shot is interesting because the
subject is puzzled about what’s
happened and it looks like he’s trying
to figure it out.
The shot is a medium close up and
the camera is looking up at him on a
canted angle.

Doing it By Charli XCX and
Rita Ora
Doing it storyline
The video has a very retro feeling to it because of the sets, the props and the
costumes. The sets look like an 1980s/1990s style because they’re not
modern. The props that they use also look old fashioned (e.g the pink pick up
truck). The costumes look like what people would wear to a western cowboy
party because the video is set in the western/country area.
Overall the video focuses more on performance and it lacks a storyline
because the sequence of the video cuts back and forward. Overall, the video
looks very tarty because of the costumes and because of some of the actions
involved.
The audience for the video is for female teenagers because there are more
women in it making it feminine, and it is aimed at teenagers specifically
because it involves some nudity which isn’t suitable for children or delicate
little snowflakes.
Doing it video analysis
At the beginning of the video, the footage is very fuzzy which makes it
obvious that it’s set in less modern times.
The Monster by Eminem and
Rihanna
The Monster Storyline
At the beginning of the video, it’s obvious that the storyline is quite dark and
acting starts of quite slow, but as the video goes on, the acting starts to
speed up. The video is about someone who is in a mental health hospital and
he wants to escape. Towards the end of the video, he escapes, but when he
escapes, he enters a war zone.
The video was suspenseful throughout because I wanted to watch more as
the video went on.
The lighting throughout the video is quite dark which helps to create the
dark/spooky atmosphere. Also, during certain parts of the music, it sounds
quite heavy when there is a bass and when the singers overemphasise a lyric.
The monster analysis
This far shot focuses on the main
character because he’s trapped inside
the hospital, and he wants to get out.
The big jail looking doors represent
the fact he is trapped.
This medium shot shows that the
subject is wanting to escape. This is
because of his facial expressions and
his body actions.
This close up shows the doctors facial
expression. His expression shows that
he looks quite strict. He isn’t going to
let the patient leave. This makes it
look like the doctor is the bad person
because he’s not letting the patient
do what he wants, but he’s actually
the good person because he’s doing
something that is in the patients
interests. This makes the patient look
like the good person because he’s not
being allowed to do what he wants,
but it’s been done for his interests.
Of The Night by Bastille
Of the Night storyline
The storyline for this music video is very dark and mysterious as well as
strange. The video starts with a car driving through a tunnel, then it
cuts to the police officer arriving at the crime scene where he finds a
lot of dead bodies. This made me want to carry on watching the video
because it is a mystery as to who committed the crime.
The video has been set in modern times because they use lots of
recently made props
Chandelier by Sia
Chandelier video analysis
The video starts off with a wide shot of an old, contemporary and derelict looking living room. Then
it cuts to a long shot of a run down looking corridor. Then it cuts to another wide shot of an old,
depressing looking bedroom. The colours of each room are quite dark and dull which suggests the
video is focused on the subject of depression. The overall look of the setting is a
As the video goes on, it became difficult to understand because the main focus is a performance
and it doesn’t have a storyline. The dance moves should have a meaning behind them, but they’re
not clear.
The dancer was 11 years old when the song was released. This could have caused controversy
because the focus of the video is a young girl, only wearing a skin tone leotard and a very blonde
wig. The setting is
‘deserted, dirty apartment’
According to one reviewer ‘She seemed more like someone who should be admitted to a mental
institute. The choreography was disturbing. The barren apartment alluded to that of a horror film
scene.’ This is a quote that I agree with because I didn’t understand the choreography because I felt
that there wasn’t a meaning behind the moves.
Paddington 2 Prison Scene
Where is the scene set and what is happening?
The scene is set in a London Prison. The prisoners are getting up and coming out of there cells. Prison Guard is giving the prisoners there duties. Before getting his job for the day,
Paddington try's to be friendly to one of the prisoners, but the prisoner threatens him.
What time of day is it set at?
The scene is set in the morning because of the prisoners getting there jobs for the day. It’s easy to tell it’s set in the morning because it’s gloomy outside and the prisoners look tired
as they come out of the cells.
Is there a narrative or is it a performance?
It’s all a narrative because it’s part of a film. Paddington is saving up to buy Madame Kozlova’s pop up book of London. As he stares through the Window of Gruber’s Antique Shop, he
hears glass shatter on the floor and notices someone braking in. As he chases the thief, which he doesn’t know who it is yet, the police arrive at the shop and see Paddington running
away from it. The thief disappears in a puff of smoke before the police catch up, making it look like Paddington is the thief. The Police arrest Paddington, he is trialled, found guilty and
sent to prison.
In the first prison scene, Paddington comes out of his cell, he greets one of the prisoners, but the prisoner threatens him and he becomes frightened.
Does the narrative/performance make sense?
The narrative makes sense. The audience feel sorry for Paddington because he’s been sent to prison for a crime he hasn’t committed. The audience feel angry with the real thief
(Phoenix Buchanan) because he framed Paddington for the crime.
Setting/Colour Scheme
The scene is set in a prison in London. The colours look quite dull which helps set the prison scene because it shows that it’s not a nice place to be.
Costume
The prison guards are wearing black jumpers, black trousers and black
shoes which shows they’re job is quite serious. The prisoners are
wearing dull white and blue stripy clothes which shows they are the
prisoners.

  • 3. Introduction to Audience Research My audience for my music video will be teenagers aged 13+. It will be aimed at both males and females and it will be for people who enjoy comedy Drama and entertainment. The video is going to involve a story, a character and action. It will focus on the character and the story more than the action. The main character is going to be a villain and the storyline is going to be quite dark. I have an idea of what song to use, but I'm going to make a survey asking people what kind of songs hey listen to, what genre they prefer and what do they like about the videos, and what elements they like (e.g. slapstick). This will give me a better idea of what the audience like and what they might want to see in the video.
  • 4. Survey Questions 1. What type of music do you listen to? (Heavy Metal, Pop, Classic, Pulp) 2. What do you like about the videos? (storytelling, characters, action) 3. What do you want to see more of in the video? (action, storytelling) 4. What elements do you want to see in a music video? (Slapstick, Drama, Comedy Drama, Romance)
  • 5. Survey Results Question 1: What Gender are you? Observation From the results so far, 50 % of people are males and 50% of people are female.
  • 6. Survey Results Question 2: How old are you? From the results of Question 2, most people are aged between 18 and 24 years old.
  • 12. How to use the camera
  • 13. How to use the Boom microphone
  • 14. How to use lighting
  • 16. How to use the Green Screen
  • 17. Why am I using the Green Screen?
  • 19. Shine By Years and Years
  • 20. Shine storyline The storyline was quite dark and spooky. It was suspenseful throughout because there were a lot of things happening in the house and there was no explanation to why they were happening. For example, the remote control cars were driving along the floor, something was controlling them, but we don’t know what because there’s no shot of someone using a remote control to move them. Also, later on in the video, the fridge was broken into and all the food was all over the floor, and there is no explanation behind it. I found this interesting because it made me wonder how it happened. I want to do something that is suspenseful in my music video, and this has given me some ideas.
  • 21. Shine video analysis In this shot, the lighting is muted because it’s not bright, but it’s not too dark either. Also, the lighting is diffused because it’s shining through the mist effect. The light shines at the back of his head, and his face is kept in darkness which raises a question of ‘What is he up to?’ The camera is looking at the subject from eye level at the back of his head. Also, it’s looking at him from an angle so the audience can see the outline of his face. The subject is wearing dark clothing which represents evil. The smoke covers up what he could be up to, and it doesn’t allow the audience to see his surroundings. In the next shot, the same person re- appears wearing a different costume and is in a different location. This suggests that he is playing two different characters. The camera is looking at him a far shot and zooms in on him as he rolls over to his left. Also, the shot is a deep focus because everything in the room is in focus.
  • 22. Shine video analysis The camera is looking at the subject from a birds eye view because it’s looking straight down at him. In this shot, he looks depressed, and the emotion links in with the lyrics ’I remember us alone, waiting for the night to go’. This implies that he is remembering something that’s happened in the past. The background colours are quite dull which create the depressing setting and mood. The lighting is quite effective because it focuses on his face which makes it clearer to see his emotion. Also, the lighting gives it a slightly warm feeling because of the colour of it. The composition of the subject makes this shot clear to understand. He’s lying on a bed looking up at the ceiling, looking depressed which shows he is thinking about something. This shot shows that something is happening in the house, but we don’t know what because the shot only shows light shining into the corridor. The camera is positioned at the other end of the corridor, and the corridor is in the centre of the frame.
  • 23. Shine video analysis This shot is interesting because the subject is puzzled about what’s happened and it looks like he’s trying to figure it out. The shot is a medium close up and the camera is looking up at him on a canted angle.
  • 25. Shine video analysis In this shot, the subject is
  • 26. Doing it By Charli XCX and Rita Ora
  • 27. Doing it storyline The video has a very retro feeling to it because of the sets, the props and the costumes. The sets look like an 1980s/1990s style because they’re not modern. The props that they use also look old fashioned (e.g the pink pick up truck). The costumes look like what people would wear to a western cowboy party because the video is set in the western/country area. Overall the video focuses more on performance and it lacks a storyline because the sequence of the video cuts back and forward. Overall, the video looks very tarty because of the costumes and because of some of the actions involved. The audience for the video is for female teenagers because there are more women in it making it feminine, and it is aimed at teenagers specifically because it involves some nudity which isn’t suitable for children or delicate little snowflakes.
  • 28. Doing it video analysis At the beginning of the video, the footage is very fuzzy which makes it obvious that it’s set in less modern times.
  • 29. The Monster by Eminem and Rihanna
  • 30. The Monster Storyline At the beginning of the video, it’s obvious that the storyline is quite dark and acting starts of quite slow, but as the video goes on, the acting starts to speed up. The video is about someone who is in a mental health hospital and he wants to escape. Towards the end of the video, he escapes, but when he escapes, he enters a war zone. The video was suspenseful throughout because I wanted to watch more as the video went on. The lighting throughout the video is quite dark which helps to create the dark/spooky atmosphere. Also, during certain parts of the music, it sounds quite heavy when there is a bass and when the singers overemphasise a lyric.
  • 31. The monster analysis This far shot focuses on the main character because he’s trapped inside the hospital, and he wants to get out. The big jail looking doors represent the fact he is trapped. This medium shot shows that the subject is wanting to escape. This is because of his facial expressions and his body actions. This close up shows the doctors facial expression. His expression shows that he looks quite strict. He isn’t going to let the patient leave. This makes it look like the doctor is the bad person because he’s not letting the patient do what he wants, but he’s actually the good person because he’s doing something that is in the patients interests. This makes the patient look like the good person because he’s not being allowed to do what he wants, but it’s been done for his interests.
  • 32. Of The Night by Bastille
  • 33. Of the Night storyline The storyline for this music video is very dark and mysterious as well as strange. The video starts with a car driving through a tunnel, then it cuts to the police officer arriving at the crime scene where he finds a lot of dead bodies. This made me want to carry on watching the video because it is a mystery as to who committed the crime. The video has been set in modern times because they use lots of recently made props
  • 35. Chandelier video analysis The video starts off with a wide shot of an old, contemporary and derelict looking living room. Then it cuts to a long shot of a run down looking corridor. Then it cuts to another wide shot of an old, depressing looking bedroom. The colours of each room are quite dark and dull which suggests the video is focused on the subject of depression. The overall look of the setting is a As the video goes on, it became difficult to understand because the main focus is a performance and it doesn’t have a storyline. The dance moves should have a meaning behind them, but they’re not clear. The dancer was 11 years old when the song was released. This could have caused controversy because the focus of the video is a young girl, only wearing a skin tone leotard and a very blonde wig. The setting is ‘deserted, dirty apartment’ According to one reviewer ‘She seemed more like someone who should be admitted to a mental institute. The choreography was disturbing. The barren apartment alluded to that of a horror film scene.’ This is a quote that I agree with because I didn’t understand the choreography because I felt that there wasn’t a meaning behind the moves.
  • 37. Where is the scene set and what is happening? The scene is set in a London Prison. The prisoners are getting up and coming out of there cells. Prison Guard is giving the prisoners there duties. Before getting his job for the day, Paddington try's to be friendly to one of the prisoners, but the prisoner threatens him. What time of day is it set at? The scene is set in the morning because of the prisoners getting there jobs for the day. It’s easy to tell it’s set in the morning because it’s gloomy outside and the prisoners look tired as they come out of the cells. Is there a narrative or is it a performance? It’s all a narrative because it’s part of a film. Paddington is saving up to buy Madame Kozlova’s pop up book of London. As he stares through the Window of Gruber’s Antique Shop, he hears glass shatter on the floor and notices someone braking in. As he chases the thief, which he doesn’t know who it is yet, the police arrive at the shop and see Paddington running away from it. The thief disappears in a puff of smoke before the police catch up, making it look like Paddington is the thief. The Police arrest Paddington, he is trialled, found guilty and sent to prison. The audience feel angry with the real thief (Phoenix Buchanan) because he framed Paddington for the crime. Setting/Colour Scheme The scene is set in a prison in London. The colours look quite dull which helps set the prison scene because it shows that it’s not a nice place to be.
  • 38. Costume The prison guards are wearing black jumpers, black trousers and black shoes which shows they’re job is quite serious. The prisoners are wearing dull white and blue stripy clothes which shows they are the prisoners.
