Linda Holmes Television 2015
Television is one of the newest, fastest growing forms of entertainment to come along in the last
one hundred years. While many argue that the rapid expansion of this genre has caused an increase
in lower quality programs (or too much television), others believe that this event is part of the
development to coincide with its new audience. Two such articles address different opinions on this
issue. Linda Holmes, author of Television2015: Is There Really Too Much TV? , published her
article under the popular culture section on NPR s website. Holmes s opinion surrounds the
premise that due to an immense growth in television programming, it has resulted in a multitude of
lesser quality shows. While she agrees that this volume of shows is an undertaking for any
individual to watch, Holmes argues it is impossible for a single genre to have too much content....

Club website. He states that while there is a new landscape of television emerging, it is not
necessarily a good or bad thing. VanDerWerff describes that because each generation thinks they
are superior to the one before it, the format of television is changing to become more personalized
to each viewer (hence, the growth television programs). These two articles, similar in message and
views, attempt to sway the readers to form similar opinions as the authors. Although Holmes and
VanDerWerff both write about the effects of television on certain time periods, VanDerWerff s
article is more convincing due to his effectiveness in acknowledging the audience, valid credibility,
and logical reasoning within his

Voltaire s Impact On Voltaire
Voltaire An enlightened thinker once said, I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the
death your right to say it. Voltaire was one of the most praised philosophers of his time as he
impacted the views many people had on religion, freedom of speech, and literature. His most
famous works include the Candide, Poem on Lisbon Disaster, Zadig, and Micromegas, These along
with twenty other philosophical tales made Voltairethe master of one of the French Enlightenment
s most fecund and innovative literary forms, (Riley 1). Voltaire changed the way people thought
about the Catholic Church through his plays, poems, and works mocking the injustices and
flaws of society and religion itself in his time. Voltaire was born Francois Marie Arouet in Paris
of 1694 to a family of 5 children. A well known theory about his birthday is that he prefered to
keep it a secret, as he constantly stated it was in different months than people suspected. His
mother, Marie Marguerite d Aumart, died when he was only seven years old. This allowed him
to grow closer to his father, who was free thinking and often encouraged him to speak his mind.
He enrolled at the College Louis le Grand, a Jesuit secondary school in Paris, and received a
classical education. This is when he first began to show promise as a writer.
After college, he studied law while employed as secretary at the French embassy in The Hague. He
then decided he wanted to devote his life to literature. He began

Essay about Ancient Egypt
Egyptian history is rich, vibrant, and full of interesting cultural knowledge. Egypt is one of the
most fertile countries located in the Mediterranean Sea; because approximately 40,000 years ago
many people lived in Egypt earlier than in other places. The Egyptian environment is a hot and dry
area, because it is a part of the Sahara Desert. Many Egyptiansreligious beliefs were polytheistic;
they believed in several different gods. The economy during the ancient Egyptian time period was
different because they were one of the first groups on earth to begin the farming trade. Although
Egyptian history occurred many years ago, it is still interesting and fascinating. (Environment

Majority of the houses were one bedroom huts, while others were multi room mansions of the
rich. Their furniture was usually used, and candles and lamps were used to light the inside of the
houses. Charcoal and wood was used for fuel, while clay ovens and fires were used for cooking.
Egyptians have been polytheistic since the beginning of time and throughout the Old Kingdom,
Middle Kingdom, and New Kingdom. This means they had faith in many different gods. They
were said to have worshipped their gods with animal sacrifices and many of the people would
carry images of the god from place to place. In the beginning the Egyptians believed that only
pharaohs had an afterlife. The Egyptians also believed that all of Egypt belonged to the gods and
Pharaoh was their representative here on earth. Some thought that maybe he was a god himself
and that made everything in Egypt belong to him. They later began to believe that everyone,
including animals, had an afterlife. Egyptians trusted that when a person died Anubis would
weigh your soul compared with a feather. This process would tell whether a person lied,
murdered, or been too self involved. If the person s soul was heavier than the feathers with bad
deeds, that person would be punished. The heart was thrown to a horrible monster called the Eater
of the Dead. The Egyptians trusted that after people

Sympathy For Sylvia In A White Heron
The character I feel most sympathy for this week will be Sylvia, who is the character from the
short story A White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewett. Sylvia is portrayed as that shy little girl who is
terrified of folks per her grandmother, Mrs. Tilly, to a hunter who stays through the night while
on an excursion for a white heron. (Jewett 136) Sylvia sadly to say had to be raised by her
grandmother due to the death of her mother which came out to be a very exciting journey on the
country side. (Jewett 137) Sylvia is so at one with the world around her that her grandmother
implies to the hunter that the wild creatures counts her as one o themselves, in which he offers ten
dollars to anyone who leads him to a white heron (Jewett 138 39). The

Learning Style for Student Nurses
In this essay I will be discussing the importance of understanding learning styles for student nurses.
I will also be focusing on the learning cycle and learning style using the Honey and Mumford 80
questionnaire. I look into the details of how learning style helps students to understand the
importance of recognising one s learningstyle preference. I will also provide an understanding of
learning and learning theories and discuss my own dominant learning style and how I aim to deal
with my weaknesses to progress well in the nursing programme.
Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of
repeated experience (Sims Sims, 1995). Understanding one s learning style has many advantages as

The behaviourist approach, used by Pavlov and Skinner (1927 and 1952 cited in Gould, 2009),
established that learning is change in behaviour brought about by experience. Studies and research
have proven that we can voluntarily and involuntary respond to certain stimuli, and what we have
learnt from previous experience. Such associative behaviour can condition our response to our way
of learning and shape our learning style (Yildirim Ozkahraman, 2011). Once we have recognised
the most predominant learning style we are able to work out how to strengthen the weaker learning
style and enhance the dominant. Cottrell (2013) stated that discovering which learning style is best
for us can help our learning in the most effective way.
There are four stages to the learning cycle, which are included in the four distinct learning styles.
The first stage is having an experience reactively, which allows the experience to come to us
without making much effort to seek it, in contrast to proactively whereby we seek out the
experience. The second stage is reviewing or reflecting on the experience. Reflecting on
experience is vital and it plays an important role in learning. The third stage is concluding from the
experience and lastly planning the next steps to enable the learner to have an action plan for what
is required to be done (Honey and Mumford 2006). There is a strong connection between learning
style and learning

Tony The Tiger
Tigers are one of the fiercest species in the jungle, known for being courageous, strong, ambitious,
and independent. These animals fight to survive every day, but before knowing any of these
characteristic traits of the tiger I always wondered why people described themselves as the animal.
Tigers have been a great part of American culture, there is Tony the Tiger

Frosted Flakes package, Tigger the energetic tiger from the animated series Winnie the Pooh ,
there is even two famous songs, one by a band named Survivor called Eye of the Tiger and

does not tell the audience much and makes them think about what type of screen it maybe, but
there are only two types of screens that it could possibly be. During this period cell phones were
not created so that is out, computers were not invented yet so that is another no, but there were
screens for doors and screens from a television. I am going to go with door screen because as the
protagonist is a mother she had duties to fulfill at the house, and sitting watching tv was not
going to get anything accomplished. As Aunt Jennifer is washing dishes, and tidying up the
house for her hard working husband, she looks outside from her depressing life and looks at her
pride and joy, her children. Going back to the meaning of tigers with their courage, ambitions,
and strength the protagonist has none because she gave it all to her children. You can tell that
Jennifer has pride in her children from the words that are being used in the first stanza, chivalry ,
and do not fear , they are strong, and they will continue to give great joy and love. By the actions,
and thoughts of Aunt Jennifer there you can see how she really feels about her everyday life, by
using psychoanalytical criticism you can see that she loves being a mother to her children, but hates

the median household income is around $62,000 per household. However, median household
incomes in the poorest zip codes in the city are less than $30,000 per household. In addition to low
household incomes, many of these zip codes are the highest in minority population density, contain
homes with low property values, offer few livable wage job opportunities, have higher than average
unemployment rates, and encompass other issues that plague poor inner city neighborhoods like
violence and graduations rates. Moreover, too often the parent(s) or guardians of the youth in the
neighborhood do not or cannot give guidance on how to move out of poverty through education,
work experiences, and/or mentoring, too often continuing the cycle of generational poverty.
Nationally the youth unemployment rate is double that of the national average. It is even worse
for teens of color and teens from low income houses. In 2014, 21 percent of African American
teens and 26 percent of Hispanic teens were able to find employment (Brookings Institute, 2016).
However, research shows that being employed during high school can help with school persistence
and graduation among economically disadvantaged youth, making it easier to transition into the
workforce after graduation and helps reduce violent, risky, and adverse social behaviors. The
biggest driver of opportunity is whether youth, age 16 24, are

Essay on Exercise of Authority in Measure for Measure
At the outset, we find the Duke transferring his power and authority to Angelo. He lends to
Angelo his own terror and dresses Angelo with his love, giving his deputation all the organs of his
own power . He says that from now on mortality and mercy in Vienna would live in Angelo s
tongue and heart. The Duke motive in appointing Angelo to function in his stead is, as he tells Friar
Thomas, to rid the country of the evils which have taken strong roots and which, he thinks, he
himself cannot eradicate because of his reputation as a very lenient man. Now the question is how
far the Duke is justified in appointing a substitute to rule the kingdom and reform the corrupt
Vienna society. We do not think that the Duke is justified in taking such

Of course, Angelo does not realize the futility of the step which he is taking because he thinks
that, merely by banning prostitution, he would be able to put an end to this evil. Pimping and
prostitution are evils which can never be eradicated through legislation, just as the evil of
alcoholism and drug taking cannot be ended by means of legislation. Evidently, Angelo believes in
employing drastic methods to eradicate evil. His belief in drastic methods of reform is particularly
seen in his sentencing Claudio to death on a charge of fornication. Now, there is no doubt at all that
Claudio is guilty of a serious moral lapse in having made a girl pregnant without having first
married her. But there are certain extenuating circumstances in Claudio s case; and Angelo errs in
not taking into consideration those extenuating circumstances. Angelo has revived certain laws
which had remained in disuse for several years, and he now proceeds to apply those laws in
their full rigour. In other words, he takes a literal and legalistic attitude towards the law (Marsh
141). He does not realize that the sentence of death against a fornicator is too severe and that the
law, which he has revived, needs to be amended. He blindly applies the law to Claudio s case, thus
showing a lack of realism. He is here undoubtedly

Critical Appreciation Of St. Thomas Aquinas
St. Thomas Aquinas, in his Summa Theologica, clearly states that self esteem, as it is understood
today, is completely incompatible with holiness. He believes that the only way self love can ever
be an orderly love is when it seeks not sensational well being (elevated self love), but only the
spiritual good of the person (holiness). St. Thomas Aquinasexplains that inordinate self love is the
root cause of every sin: Every sinful act proceeds from inordinate desire for some temporal good.
Now the fact that anyone desires a temporal good inordinately is due to the fact that he loves
himself inordinately; for to wish some good to someone is to love him. Therefore it is evident
that inordinate self love is the cause of every sin (ST I II. Q77. A4.). Aquinas describes a type of
egoism that causes us to turn away from God. Having high self esteemcan be associated at times
with human desire of selfishness and greed. Aquinas simply believes that every sin is a form of
inordinate self love. This is a false sense of self love.
Brother John Sica also writes in the Dominicana Journal that many people falsely think of humility
as a virtue of a low self esteem. Instead, he says, St. Thomas actually teaches us that humility is a
virtue of acknowledging the truth about reality. Since prayer, at its root, is an asking directed at
God, humility is crucially important. Through humility, we recognize our neediness before God.
We are totally and entirely dependent on God for everything and at every moment: our existence,
life, breath, every thought and action.
In similar thought, St. Augustine wrote in Book 1, Chapter I of Confessions, You have made us
for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you. Throughout his
life, he had been a heretic and sinner with high self esteem. He liked himself, admired himself,
and was proud of the image that others had of him; this was what kept him grounded in his
lifestyle. In his Confessions, he even recalls how he saw good and knew what he had to do, but
could not bring himself to do it because he himself had woven the chains that were keeping him
bound. It was when he finally realized his miserable state that alas, his self esteem fell. He

Australian History And The Canadian Government
In our society, people with different cultures, backgrounds, and religions were considered unequal.
One of the many people that were treated unequally in Canadian History were the Aboriginals.
Before the war began, Aboriginals were not treated fairly by the Canadian government. Aboriginals
struggled to get a permanent job therefore clearly displaying Aboriginals struggling to get the
resources they need in order to survive. Canadas leader ignored this situation and continued to
discriminate Aboriginals (Marshall 2). Several times, Aboriginals were being used by their own
country to do their dirty jobs. The Canadian government did not want to risk true Canadian lives, so
they used the Aboriginals. By the 1990 s, one would think that the government would come to their
senses and realize that the Aboriginals are just like any other human being. However, this was not
the case because the Canadian Government tried stealing and taking Aboriginal belongings for their
own needs later on. Ultimately, the Aboriginal people were mainly treated unequally by the
Government in the Great War, The Manhattan Project, and the Oka Crisis. Aboriginal citizens in the
Great War were more than willing to enlist and volunteer however, they were not permitted to do so
by the Canadian Government (Armstrong et al.1). Aboriginals hoped that one day, their voices
would be heard and that they would get the rights that they deserve. Furthermore, in 1915, the
Aboriginals thought the Canadian

When Cheating Is Wrong
I have lied to my parents about my where I have been. I have returned a wallet full of money to I

trouble and when exposed to peer pressure I have decided to abstain from doing drugs. I have
made many moral decisions in my lifetime. Some of them are no brainers, others take some careful
deliberation. One of the moral decisions that I still think about to this day, is when I cheated in a
relationship. An Absolutist would say that cheating is wrong, not matter what the circumstance. A
relativist would think it is wrong only, if the cheater thought it was wrong.. Upon agreeing to be in
a relationship with one another, it is understood that going outside t the relationship for sexual or

Ted Kennedy Rhetorical Analysis In Jfk Speech
In the library of his father s house, on July 25th, 1969, Senator Edward Ted Kennedy would
make one of the most important speeches of his political career. Th e Senator was well put
together, his hair in place and his suit pressed, impeccable. He was far away from where the
accident he was to talk about had taken place, the Chappaquiddick. A team of his best speech
writers had been assembled to create this famous speech, and the papers lay out before him upon
the desk. A firm tone and folded hands showed resolve as he began to read aloud. Ted Kennedy
started his speech by setting the time and place of the accident to the forefront of the audience s
mind. He spoke of how he had left the party accompanied by the late Mary Jo Kopechne, who
Edward stated he had no prior private relationship with, nor any knowledge of past conduct that
would lead to disrespectful speculation of her character. Edward gave a clear picture of the events
that night, using descriptive information to build credibility. He stated that he was overcome with a

Imperialism, The Middle East, And East Asia
Large busy markets, snake charmers, carpet vendors, and veiled women all invoke ideas of West
Africa, the Middle East, and West Asia, but all these ideas come from Oriental fantasies from the
nineteenth century. Edward Said the author of Orientalism said that Orientalism was ultimately a
political vision of reality whose structure promoted the difference between the familiar (Europe,
West, us ) and the strange (the Orient, the East, them ). The nineteenth century was a period of
imperialism and tourism that led many western artists to visit West Africa, the Middle East, and
Asia. Orientalist paintings depicted two major effects, many artists often portrayed something
exotic, which was racialized, feminized, and from a sexualized culture from a faraway land.
Another effect that artists mainly like Jean LГ©on GГ©rГґme often showed was an authentic
glimpse of a location and its inhabitants. Nochlin mentioned that many of GГ©rГґme s paintings
worked to persuade their audiences by carefully representing a preexisting Oriental reality.
Imperialism is a policy or practice by which a country increases its power by gaining control over
other areas of the world. French orientalist paintings in the nineteenth century were intended as
propaganda in support of French imperialism, portraying the East as a place of backwardness,
lawlessness, and savagery enlightened and disciplined by French rule. The emphasis on military

Essay on A clean well-lighted Place
Hemingway s short story, quot;A Clean Well lighted Place quot;, takes place at a cafe very late at
night. Two waiters are watching their last, lingering customer, an old man, who is by now very
drunk. The younger waiter s impatience and the older waiter s understanding toward the old man
carryout the theme of the story: quot;It [life] was all a nothing and a man was a nothing too.
quot;(114) Man must consequently find something to distract himself from his horrible truth. For
the old man and the older waiter, quot;a cleanand well lighted quot; cafeis such an escape.

However, by now, he has nothing but money, which is not able to comfort his loneliness; he has
nothing but an old body, which people think that it is nasty. His niece looks after him. But all
they care about is his money. The reason that they saved him from the suicide is the quot;fear
for his should. quot;(111) The older waiter sees the dark truth of life from the old man. Like the
old man, he has stared into the Great Nada, quot;...It [life] was all a nothing and a man was a

wishes also to remain in the light.
In this short story, Hemingway expresses a completely nihilistic worldview: life is meaningless,
and filled with darkness. He believes that people shout find a method of coping with life s
hardships in a graceful, dignified manner. Like the elderly drinker, despite the obvious hardships
in his life (since he attempts suicide), he doesn t lose his cool, but finding his own way of

Confilcting Ideas of the Past in Canada
He has been called a prophet, a traitor, a martyr, a visionary and a madman, but whatever one thinks
of him, Louis Riel, remains one of the most controversial figures in Canadian history. Does this man
who has continued to haunt Canadian history for more than a century after his execution, deserve
all of those descriptions? After reading three different interpretations of the rebellions, it is still
difficult to decide which is closer to the truth. All three authors retold the Metis history and although
they differ on crucial issues, there was agreement on the basic facts. The primary difference
amongst the three authors was whether the Canadian and Manitoban governments acted in good

He believed that an aggressive, but compassionate, New Dominion had to defeat the uncivilized
obstacles, because they were resisting progress. The natives had to fail in their stance against the
government, because they were a primitive people , standing against the march of civilization, 1
they had to be pushed aside so the new country could progress.
Stanley believes that up until the execution of Thomas Scott, the Red River Rebellion was relatively
non violent and the government probably would have forgiven the Metis indiscretions, because
they even continued to follow the process of conciliation through to the passage of the Manitoba
Act. Although Scott deserved some sort of punishment for his actions against the Metis people, his
actions hardly deserved the death penalty. 2
The execution of Scott was a huge faux pas on the part of the Metis officials and it invited terrible
reprisals from the government. John A. MacDonald certainly could not ignore the execution
because half the people of his newly formed country were calling for the head of Riel. The
rebellions from here on in would take an ugly turn and seem more about race and religion and less
about negotiations between the Metis Provisional government and the Canadian Government. The
execution of Scott caused huge problems for the government and they couldn t turn a blind eye to

In the case involving the City of Boston and its residents, various types of goods exist. The primary
resource that is being debated in this case study is water. In this instance, water is both a public

laundering is a term that refers to the activities and financial transactions that are undertaken
specifically to hide the true source of the money (IRS.GOV) that you have received. This is
usually happening when you are receiving your money illegally and trying to show that you are
receiving the money from actual business type situations. A great example would be a drug dealer
receiving all of his money from selling drugs and then turning around and saying he is receiving the
money from a fake storefront or even from construction. When in reality they do not

An Effective Retail Design That Maximize Success For Juice...
This problem case details the steps to determine an effective retail design that would maximize
success for Juice Guys in the east coast market. After reaching triumph in the west coast market,
Juice Guys is looking to expand firstly into the Boston neighbourhoods. Boston consumers had a
strong likeness for NantucketNectars but the market was different: metropolitan city (year round)
versus summer only in Nantucket Island.
To accomplish this feat, the company must decide how to target and position the stores given the
differential differences in demographic and environmental traits. Furthermore, Juice Guys needs to
determine who are their customers, their inclinations for the product and their preferences to a
smoothie store. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This poses a substantial financial loss as each store provides a total of $1300 with margins as high
as 50%. Alternatively, Juice Guys has only been successful in the west coast; therefore the
company will not risk future losses. However, as there is a growing market for healthy lifestyles,
this presents a considerable growth option for the company.
2.Expand into east coast and design like west coast
Juice Guys currently has a strong reputation in the west coast, which can be carried forward to
their operations in the east. They have a deep reputation with consumers for their products, which
leads to increased potential of brand resonance. However, as the west coast consumers differ from
the east, there is the possibility of Juice Guys products not being accepted as welcomingly.
3.Expand into east coast and design for east coast needs
Juice Guys can capitalize on the brand equity of the brand yet design retail concepts in Boston
according to local needs. This option will allow the company to replicate the success they achieved
in Nantucket Island (modifying operations to open during summer to meet local consumer needs).
Additionally, this will allow the Boston market to understand this new product offering. However,
as retail concepts differ across the country, there may be the lack of consistency across the brand,
which will confuse consumers in Juice Guys brand message.

The Altar Of Zeus From Pergamon
Power is an ideal that many strive for, and few achieve, and there is no more obvious a
demonstration of power, than besting someone in a battle. The Altar of Zeus from Pergamon,
Turkey exemplifies that power. Created around 175 BCE it used to stand on a platform,
surrounded by columns which were no doubt as imposing as the scenes of the sculptures. It is a
narration of the gods and goddesses defeat over the giants, and victory in battle is nearly
synonymous with power. The gigantomachy frieze depicts a scene in which Athena is holding
Alkyoneos down in subjection by his head; while simultaneously being crowned by Nike. It is

Static IP address is an IP address that is permanent to a specific host for a certain amount of time.
This IP address is assigned by the ISP out of a specific designated block of IP addresses and
manually entered into the computer. While primarily IP addresses are sent to the host by the
DHCP now, certain people prefer static IP.
Static IP is also used for the URL or uniform resource locator to give a website a permanent
residence on the internet. This keeps the website from bouncing around from leased IP s that a
DHCP would give. This type of network would also be good for VPN s and remote access. To
quote Lifewire: (Fisher, 2017) Because a static IP address never changes, other devices always
know exactly how to contact a device that uses one. The only issue I foresee with Static IP

How Water Affects The Rate Of Change In Water
Water normally freezes at 0В°C, however this temperature reading is widely dependent on the
substances that are present in the water. When dissolving a substance in water, the freezing point
will be lowered, meaning that the temperature has to be colder in order for the water to
completely freeze. This is called, The Depression of Freezing Point . Many foreign substances,
such as alcohol, sugar and salt, can interrupt the balance of melting and freezing water at 0 degrees
Celsius. This has a direct link to the melting point of ice as melting point and freezing point both
are 0В°C.
When the temperature of water reaches a freezing point, the free flowing molecules get trapped
into organized crystal structures creating ice. However, when salt is introduced it disrupts the
process. When in contact with water, it splits up into two ions, being Sodium and Chloride
(NaCl). These ions move around in between the structure which then leads to the ice melting due
to the lowering to the freezing point which means more water molecules are leaving and less are
entering the solid. When the temperature lowers even further, the water molecules leaving the
solid phase will slow down even further and the rate will eventually match the rate at which water
molecules can find the solid in the presence of salt. When water leaves a solid at the same rate as
molecules enter, a lower freezig point is established. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The test that will be conducted uses 500ml of water and different levels of salt and sugar. Salt
and sugar, the solutes, being the independent variables, will allow the experiment to test the
melting rate of ice at different concentration levels. By adding salt and sugar in to separate ice
trays after diluting it and freezing it, the freezing point should be lowered, meaning that the rate at
which the ice will melt will decrease. This would also be the case if sugar was used along with

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Burden
Light the fuse, to destroy abuse Most people know the purity of a child s happiness and
innocence, for most parents their children, is their true love and happiness in their lives. They
will stop at nothing to protect their child s wellbeing. The brief video depicts the internal damage,
of a sexually abused child, who is dragging around a replica corpse of himself. He struggles
throughout the video dragging this dead body to his bus stop and to school, until he gets home. At
all times he carries this burden with him. The corpse symbolizes the child s trauma and pain of
constant abuse, displaying to the viewer the comparison of internal and external world of abuse. In

child, wishing that they could reach out and help this child. Also, by including the child that
seems to look normal emphasizes the idea that no one can really tell if a child needs help or is
hurting unless someone asks because a child can be easily misjudged as a quiet child. The
director is trying to display the direct comparison of an abused child and the emotional toll that

Women s Women Faced Gender Discrimination
Prior to the 1970 s women faced gender discrimination in politics in regards to plausibility about
political obligation that falls along the lines of gender. Various gender representation within a
representative democracy were consistent of male supremacy. Women were denied full citizenship
rights such as the right to vote. Women fought for their suffrage in order to gain the right to vote
and be entitled social, civil, and moral rights for themselves. Despite the increasing presence of
women in American Politics, genderstereotypes still existed. In 1972, Congress passed Title IX in
order to end sex based discriminationin higher education. Although, the act never explicitly states
athletics, the act did become recognized frequently in the case of athletics in higher education. In
addition to athletics, Title IX extends to prohibiting gender bias in education and the workplace.
Even though, there are gains in gender equality with the passage of Title IX, stereotypical bias
infiltrate prejudices that frame the full potential of Title IX.
Despite the fact that the major emphasis and repercussion of Title IX focused on the areas of
intercollegiate athletics, the original document did not mention athletics. However, every person
should be entitled to the equal right to participate in sports, despite the color of their skin, social
status, or gender. Sports build character and emphasizes the values of teamwork, perseverance, and

Symbolic And Interpretive Anthropology Of The 1960 s And...
The 1960 s and 1970 s in both Britain and the United States found a resurgence of interest in cultural
meaning, in the field of symbolic and interpretive anthropology. Symbolic and Interpretive
anthropology studies the way people understand their surroundings, actions and utterance of other
members of their society through the examinations of symbols. These symbols can be displayed
through processes of myth and ritualand reveal how humans/social groups assign meanings to these
symbols in order to address fundamental questions about human social life. Symbolic and
interpretative anthropologycan be divided into two major approaches, wherein, one is associated
with Victor Turner and the other with Clifford Geertz.
Victor Turner was a British anthropologist who studied rituals and social change particularly
among the Ndembu of Zambia. Through his work Turner was able to reveal how the process of
social change unfolded from the point of view of the individual experiences and the development
of common beliefs that are maintained by the social group. From the excerpt, Symbols in Ndembu
Ritual , Turner depicts his search for the meaning of ritual and symbolism in puberty/circumcision
rights of passage among young girls and boys in relation to the adults in their tribes. Reminiscent of
Max Gluckman, Turner viewed all rituals as containing religious or spiritual components in the
referents of the symbolism involved and described symbols as the smallest unit of ritual which

Ethical Code And Ethical Codes
A personal ethical code is something everyone has. People may be aware of it to different
degrees, or have differing levels of definition, but no one is entirely unprincipled. Ethical codes
may be based off different factors such as religion, society, and family. My personal ethical code is
derived from simply one source, the writings of Immanuel Kant. I find that the code described by
him is the only one that is truly justified, and therefore the only one I would be able to follow
without cognitive dissonance or feeling I was doing the wrong thing. However, as this is my
personal code, and I don t want to merely rephrase Kant, I interpret the rules much differently than
he did, and in some places make modifications or draw radically different conclusions. Otherwise,
My ethical code is based on following The Categorical Imperativewhenever possible. The
Categorical Imperative is the foundation of my metaethics. In making actions there are many
Hypothetical imperatives we could take. These are straight out of kant and were statements like: In
order to do X, I must do Y. A moral imperative is different in that it is merely Do Y. A moral
imperative can tell us which hypothetical imperativeto pick. To have a real moral imperative it must
be independent of context or situation. It has to be something that can always be followed. The
Categorical Imperative can do this through it s three rules, which fit the above criteria. This is
justified, at least to me, through

Cocaine Intoxication Essay
Cocaine Intoxication Cocaine intoxication occurs when you snort, smoke or inject too much
cocaine. One becomes restless and overactive shortly after using cocaine, but with excessive use,
cocaine intoxication can lead to death (Adult Health Advisor, 2005). The four stages of cocaine
intoxication are cocaine euphoria, cocaine disphoria, cocaine hallucinosis and cocaine psychosis. It
has been noted that cocaine intoxication closely resembles a psychiatric disorder. In the movie,

irritability and sexual indifference. Contrast to cocaine euphoria, individuals feel tired and want
sleep, but cannot fall asleep. Users in this stage also have strong cravings for more cocaine to
return to the increased pleasure and energy in stage one. As the movie moves forward, so does
Lenny s experience with cocaine intoxication. In the bar scene when he is waiting for the dealer
with his wife, he is irritated with the dealer for being late, even though his wife is relatively
unaffected by having to wait. Also, one can see how Lenny craves more cocaine once he is out
of the hospital. He was just released for overdosing on cocaine, but as soon as he gets in the car
with his wife, he asks her if she has any. Another example to show how desperate Lenny is to
obtain more cocaine and try to impress people is by stealing $20,000 from his boss. As one moves
into stage three, the symptoms and affects start to become more severe and dangerous. This third
stage is referred to as cocaine hallucinosis. In this stage, individuals experience hallucinations and
delusions. Hallucinations are sensory experiences that occur in the absence of actual stimulation

The Effect Of Fracking On The United States Economy And...
Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without
ever reaching satisfaction (Erich Fromm).
Introduction
Fracking is a complex political topic; nonetheless, fracking is showing a positive impact on the
United States economy and leaving a harmful footprint behind the environment. In addition,
consumers are experiencing a significant amount of savings due to the overwhelming supplies of
oil; thus, the revolution in new technology is triggering an improper fracking system that
contributes to airborne pollution and water contamination. Higher authorities should implement the
concepts of sustainability and ethical views of large corporations and businesses to protect the
consumer s safety.
Political Views
Oil suppliers dig deep down to the roots to analyze and derive concrete solutions to carry on the
rising market. The force of fracking in the United States is lifting the economy; the system has been
a political game changer for the nation, creating job opportunities and investing money into the
community. The United States is currently capable of competing with the global marketplaces at a
high rate. This coordination leads to knowledge for on shoring manufacturing, which eliminates the
dependency on foreign oil. This significant groundwork is driving opportunities for innovators. The

time she had left to live. What would you do? Imagine going to the doctor after numerous, severe
headaches. The doctor performs a CT scan that reveals a rapidly growing brain tumor. The doctor
breaks down the information, reveals that the tumor is a rare form of cancer, and is inoperable.
Unfortunately, the doctor also relays the life expectancy with a cancer this rare and aggressive; a
few months at best and those short months will become increasingly

Resistance Of The Patriarchal Norms Of Pakistan
Resistance to uprooting the patriarchal norms in Pakistan, especially in rural areas, is another
cause of the lack of education, especially for girls. You can see this resistance in the attacks on
teachers and the high rates of illiteracy, especially among women and girls. Balochistan is one of
these places where educationcan be scarce and the dangers are high. There have also been attacks
on teachers, such as one in October, when four female teachers in Quetta had acid thrown at them
as they left school(Girls). Risks like this push teachers away from schools, offering less
opportunity to the girls who might have attended, if they had the chance. Luckily, some girls been
lucky enough to be invested in, and they are the reason we are questioning these cultural norms in
the first place. Malala Yousafzi is a perfect example of what happens when someone has the
bravery to stand up against an oppressive system. Malala was the victim of the Taliban, being shot
in the head for speaking out for her right to an education as a girl, something the Taliban strongly
opposed (Lewis 3). Malala had used a pseudonym with the British Broadcasting Company to write
about her conditions, and when her real name was eventually revealed, the Taliban had their eyes
on her (Lewis 5). Interestingly, Malala s shooting created a spark in the opposite direction the
Taliban intended. Killing, or attempted killing, by the Taliban is meant to be a warning. But Malala
s situation rustled people in a

Tale Of Two Cities Women Essay
The women in Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, are important characters that inspire
others and serve as essential parts to the plot of the story. Miss Pross serves as a motherly figure
and nurturer towards Lucie Manette, Madame ThГ©rГЁse Defarge condemns the people she
resents to death, and Lucie Manette s love and compassion inspire other characters and bring
light into their lives. Miss Pross is Lucie Manette s caretaker, she is very protective of and loyal
to Lucie. Miss Pross has lived with Lucie since she was ten years old (100). She portrays a
motherly figure to Lucie, whose birth mother died when she was very young, and takes care of
her throughout the story. Miss Pross love for Lucie and eagerness to protect her gave her the
courage to kill Madame Defarge in order to protect Lucie and her family. Furthermore, she wants
the best for Lucie at all times. For example, when multiple men came to ask for Lucie s hand in
marriage, Miss Pross called them, not in the least degree worthy of [Lucie] and was very reluctant
to let her marry (100).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Madame Defarge is revengeful and feels hatred towards aristocrats because her family was
killed by aristocrats when she was young. As a result, she knits the names of many aristocratic
families, sentencing them to death. The names of the people that are to be killed by the
revolutionaries are Knitted, in her own stitches and her own symbols (179). Moreover, Madame
Defarge is an influential figure and a strong leader who encourages the female revolutionaries to
fight alongside the men. During the storming of Bastille, Madame Defarge cries out to a group of
women, To me women!... We can kill as well as the men when the place is taken! and leads them
on to the Bastille

Social Problems and Social Welfare
For many of us when we hear the term Homeless the first image that often springs to mind is a
person huddling in a sleeping bag or cardboard box in a doorway of a city street. Whilst media
imagery and information released by charities can support this picture the problem of homelessness
encompasses a far wider range. This discussion looks at homelessnesswith a particular emphasis on
young people that is young people typically aged between 16 and 24.
In its simplest form Homelessness means not having a home. In this context a home is not just a
house, it is a permanent, private roof over your head, a place of security with community links and
support. It should be of a decent standard and affordable. (Shelter Nov 2005)
The statutory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Homelessness Act 2002 widened the classification of homeless people having a priority need
to include 16 17 year olds, care leavers aged between 18 and 20 and persons who are vulnerable due
to them being in care, prison, armed forces or fleeing violence and/or threats of violence. This is
a step in the right direction but bearing in mind we are considering young people to be 16 24
where is the support for persons 18 years +? There is still a significant gap here considering the
lower minimum wage and benefit levels available in this age range.
Other legislation places duties on Social Services departments to provide for people in and leaving
care namely The Children Act 1989 and The Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000.
What is the impact of homelessness on young people? The More than a roof report acknowledged
that historically government s investment in affordable housing has been significantly too low.
Council House stock has been depleted through the successful Right to Buy scheme but these stocks
have not been replaced. Whilst there has been a required move away from council housing towards
housing association accommodation, an ever increasing population combined with this under
investment has left a significant gap in the countries overall housing stock. Regional factors are also
worth considering The prosperous South East corner of the UK has attracted a migrating population

Hicks And The Is Lm Curve
Dan Hill AAEC 8210 December 1st, 2015 Hicks and the IS LM Curve While J.R. Hicks received
the Nobel Prize for many of his accomplishments in both macroeconomic and microeconomic
research, his development of what he then called the SI LL model, but is now more famously
known as the IS LM model, was one of his greatest feats. The IS LM model was Hicks reduction
of aggregate demand analysis done by John Maynard Keynes in his book titled The General Theory
of Employment, Interest, and Money published in 1936. The model s purpose was to explain
investor decisions dependent on money availability and interest rates in the goods and services
market and assets market. The IS LM model now plays an integral role in both general
macroeconomic understanding and policy analysis. IS LM stands for investment savings and
liquidity money, and can be represented graphically by a downward sloping curve for IS and an
upward sloping curve for LM. In the IS curve, anywhere along the curve represents a point where
interest rate and income satisfy that total spending equals the economy s total output (real income).
Total spending/demand is determined by adding together consumer expenditure, investment,
government expenditure, and net exports (investment being the only endogenous variable among
the four). In this equation, the assumptions are that; consumer spending is increasing with more
disposable income, investment is increasing as interest rates increase, and exports are increasing

Differences Between Formalist And Functionalist Stylistics
The Comparison and Contrast between Formalist and Functionalist Stylistics There are several
differences way how formalist and functionalist analyze a text. The formalists consist of Roman
Jakobson s poetic function of language, Viktor Shklovsky s defamiliarisation and Vladimir Propp s
the morphology of the folktale. Besides, the functionalist consists of Halliday with his tripartite
functions (ideational, interpersonal, and textual). Both differences will explain below. The first part
will flesh out about formalist stylistics. Russian Formalismis known at the beginning of the
twentieth century as the great impact on the contemporary stylistics. There are two famous schools
which claim founding the Russian formalismmovement. They are... Show more content on

Functionalist is not only concerning the text, but it is also interested in the role that context play in
the process of meaning making. So, there are gradual movements from text to context, from form to
function, from semantics to pragmatics and from logic to rhetoric. In Halliday in Routledge
(2014:46), Halliday observes that language has tripartite function which can be broken down into
three interconnecting metafunctions . They are ideational (to express ideas and experience (clause
as representation)), interpersonal (to mediate in the establishment of social relationship(clause as
exchange)), textual (to provide the formal properties of language(clause as message)). These three
metafunctions are good when these are used all of the in any study of text. Cohesion is the part of
textual metafunction which refers to the way in which sentences are linked together in order to
make sense. There are several cohesion devices which are able to tie together semantically such as
conjunction, ellipsis, substitution and reference. These features of cohesion have function to
cohere between the message and the language so that the readers are not

Performance Enhancing Drugs In Sports Essay
Why are sports such a large part of society? People enjoy watching sports because most people like
competition. People enjoy competing with each other whether it is just friendly competition or as
their job. Some dislike losing so much that they will go to extremes to make sure that they are
better than their rival. They do this by using performance enhancing drugs to be better than their
opponent. Professional athletes should have to be drug tested due to the many health risks it
causes, and in many cases the use of these substances is considered cheating by many sports
organizations. Athletes go to many extremes to be able to use these performance enhancing drugs.
Occasionally the athletes will go to lengths to make them hard for tests... Show more content on

Many athletic organizations have banned athletes from using these substances; they consider the
use of these substances to be a form of cheating. Bouchard and Sprague state that some professional
athletes use steroids and other drugs to gain a competitive advantage in their sport. Such an
advantage is generally considered by most athletic organizations to be cheating. These organizations
consider performance enhancing substance use to be cheating because this gives the individual
taking the substances an unfair advantage against their opponents that do not use these drugs. The
unfair advantage that would take place in the competition would alter the true results. In any
competition breaking the rules to gain an unfair advantage is considered cheating. Dr. M Schermer
author of On the Argument that Enhancement is Cheating explains that if cheating is understood as
breaking the rules in order to gain an unfair advantage over other, it can be argued that some
enhancements are a form of cheating. If the sport of activity an athlete is participating in has
specific rules that prohibit the use of certain substances and the athlete violates those rules and is
aware that they are violating the rule, then that person is considered to be cheating; if an athlete
consciously breaks a rule to gain an advantage over his or her rival, that is considered cheating. The
use of performance enhancing substances is breaking rules and cheating, according to most athletic

  • 2. Linda Holmes Television 2015 Television is one of the newest, fastest growing forms of entertainment to come along in the last one hundred years. While many argue that the rapid expansion of this genre has caused an increase in lower quality programs (or too much television), others believe that this event is part of the development to coincide with its new audience. Two such articles address different opinions on this issue. Linda Holmes, author of Television2015: Is There Really Too Much TV? , published her article under the popular culture section on NPR s website. Holmes s opinion surrounds the premise that due to an immense growth in television programming, it has resulted in a multitude of lesser quality shows. While she agrees that this volume of shows is an undertaking for any individual to watch, Holmes argues it is impossible for a single genre to have too much content.... VanDerWerff describes that because each generation thinks they are superior to the one before it, the format of television is changing to become more personalized to each viewer (hence, the growth television programs). These two articles, similar in message and views, attempt to sway the readers to form similar opinions as the authors. Although Holmes and VanDerWerff both write about the effects of television on certain time periods, VanDerWerff s article is more convincing due to his effectiveness in acknowledging the audience, valid credibility, and logical reasoning within his ... • 3. Voltaire s Impact On Voltaire Voltaire An enlightened thinker once said, I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. Voltaire was one of the most praised philosophers of his time as he impacted the views many people had on religion, freedom of speech, and literature. His most famous works include the Candide, Poem on Lisbon Disaster, Zadig, and Micromegas, These along with twenty other philosophical tales made Voltairethe master of one of the French Enlightenment s most fecund and innovative literary forms, (Riley 1). Voltaire changed the way people thought about the Catholic Church through his plays, poems, and works mocking the injustices and flaws of society and religion itself in his time. Voltaire was born Francois Marie Arouet in Paris of 1694 to a family of 5 children. A well known theory about his birthday is that he prefered to keep it a secret, as he constantly stated it was in different months than people suspected. His mother, Marie Marguerite d Aumart, died when he was only seven years old. This allowed him to grow closer to his father, who was free thinking and often encouraged him to speak his mind. He enrolled at the College Louis le Grand, a Jesuit secondary school in Paris, and received a classical education. This is when he first began to show promise as a writer. After college, he studied law while employed as secretary at the French embassy in The Hague. He then decided he wanted to devote his life to literature. He began ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Egyptians have been polytheistic since the beginning of time and throughout the Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, and New Kingdom. This means they had faith in many different gods. They were said to have worshipped their gods with animal sacrifices and many of the people would carry images of the god from place to place. In the beginning the Egyptians believed that only pharaohs had an afterlife. The Egyptians also believed that all of Egypt belonged to the gods and Pharaoh was their representative here on earth. Some thought that maybe he was a god himself and that made everything in Egypt belong to him. They later began to believe that everyone, including animals, had an afterlife. Egyptians trusted that when a person died Anubis would weigh your soul compared with a feather. This process would tell whether a person lied, murdered, or been too self involved. If the person s soul was heavier than the feathers with bad deeds, that person would be punished. The heart was thrown to a horrible monster called the Eater of the Dead. • 6. Learning Style for Student Nurses In this essay I will be discussing the importance of understanding learning styles for student nurses. I will also be focusing on the learning cycle and learning style using the Honey and Mumford 80 questionnaire. I look into the details of how learning style helps students to understand the importance of recognising one s learningstyle preference. I will also provide an understanding of learning and learning theories and discuss my own dominant learning style and how I aim to deal with my weaknesses to progress well in the nursing programme. Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims Sims, 1995). Understanding one s learning style has many advantages as it ... The behaviourist approach, used by Pavlov and Skinner (1927 and 1952 cited in Gould, 2009), established that learning is change in behaviour brought about by experience. Studies and research have proven that we can voluntarily and involuntary respond to certain stimuli, and what we have learnt from previous experience. Such associative behaviour can condition our response to our way of learning and shape our learning style (Yildirim Ozkahraman, 2011). Once we have recognised the most predominant learning style we are able to work out how to strengthen the weaker learning style and enhance the dominant. Cottrell (2013) stated that discovering which learning style is best for us can help our learning in the most effective way. There are four stages to the learning cycle, which are included in the four distinct learning styles. The first stage is having an experience reactively, which allows the experience to come to us without making much effort to seek it, in contrast to proactively whereby we seek out the experience. The second stage is reviewing or reflecting on the experience. Reflecting on experience is vital and it plays an important role in learning. The third stage is concluding from the experience and lastly planning the next steps to enable the learner to have an action plan for what is required to be done (Honey and Mumford 2006). However, median household incomes in the poorest zip codes in the city are less than $30,000 per household. In addition to low household incomes, many of these zip codes are the highest in minority population density, contain homes with low property values, offer few livable wage job opportunities, have higher than average unemployment rates, and encompass other issues that plague poor inner city neighborhoods like violence and graduations rates. Moreover, too often the parent(s) or guardians of the youth in the neighborhood do not or cannot give guidance on how to move out of poverty through education, work experiences, and/or mentoring, too often continuing the cycle of generational poverty. Nationally the youth unemployment rate is double that of the national average. It is even worse for teens of color and teens from low income houses. In 2014, 21 percent of African American teens and 26 percent of Hispanic teens were able to find employment (Brookings Institute, 2016). He lends to Angelo his own terror and dresses Angelo with his love, giving his deputation all the organs of his own power . He says that from now on mortality and mercy in Vienna would live in Angelo s tongue and heart. The Duke motive in appointing Angelo to function in his stead is, as he tells Friar Thomas, to rid the country of the evils which have taken strong roots and which, he thinks, he himself cannot eradicate because of his reputation as a very lenient man. Now the question is how far the Duke is justified in appointing a substitute to rule the kingdom and reform the corrupt Vienna society. We do not think that the Duke is justified in taking such ... Of course, Angelo does not realize the futility of the step which he is taking because he thinks that, merely by banning prostitution, he would be able to put an end to this evil. Pimping and prostitution are evils which can never be eradicated through legislation, just as the evil of alcoholism and drug taking cannot be ended by means of legislation. Evidently, Angelo believes in employing drastic methods to eradicate evil. His belief in drastic methods of reform is particularly seen in his sentencing Claudio to death on a charge of fornication. Now, there is no doubt at all that Claudio is guilty of a serious moral lapse in having made a girl pregnant without having first married her. But there are certain extenuating circumstances in Claudio s case; and Angelo errs in not taking into consideration those extenuating circumstances. Angelo has revived certain laws which had remained in disuse for several years, and he now proceeds to apply those laws in their full rigour. In other words, he takes a literal and legalistic attitude towards the law (Marsh 141). He does not realize that the sentence of death against a fornicator is too severe and that the law, which he has revived, needs to be amended. He blindly applies the law to Claudio s case, thus showing a lack of realism. He is here undoubtedly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Critical Appreciation Of St. Thomas Aquinas St. Thomas Aquinas, in his Summa Theologica, clearly states that self esteem, as it is understood today, is completely incompatible with holiness. He believes that the only way self love can ever be an orderly love is when it seeks not sensational well being (elevated self love), but only the spiritual good of the person (holiness). St. Thomas Aquinasexplains that inordinate self love is the root cause of every sin: Every sinful act proceeds from inordinate desire for some temporal good. Now the fact that anyone desires a temporal good inordinately is due to the fact that he loves himself inordinately; for to wish some good to someone is to love him. Therefore it is evident that inordinate self love is the cause of every sin (ST I II. Q77. A4.). Aquinas describes a type of egoism that causes us to turn away from God. Having high self esteemcan be associated at times with human desire of selfishness and greed. Aquinas simply believes that every sin is a form of inordinate self love. This is a false sense of self love. Brother John Sica also writes in the Dominicana Journal that many people falsely think of humility as a virtue of a low self esteem. Instead, he says, St. Thomas actually teaches us that humility is a virtue of acknowledging the truth about reality. Since prayer, at its root, is an asking directed at God, humility is crucially important. Through humility, we recognize our neediness before God. We are totally and entirely dependent on God for everything and at every moment: our existence, life, breath, every thought and action. In similar thought, St. Augustine wrote in Book 1, Chapter I of Confessions, You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you. Throughout his life, he had been a heretic and sinner with high self esteem. He liked himself, admired himself, and was proud of the image that others had of him; this was what kept him grounded in his lifestyle. In his Confessions, he even recalls how he saw good and knew what he had to do, but could not bring himself to do it because he himself had woven the chains that were keeping him bound. It was when he finally realized his miserable state that alas, his self esteem fell. He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Australian History And The Canadian Government In our society, people with different cultures, backgrounds, and religions were considered unequal. One of the many people that were treated unequally in Canadian History were the Aboriginals. Before the war began, Aboriginals were not treated fairly by the Canadian government. Aboriginals struggled to get a permanent job therefore clearly displaying Aboriginals struggling to get the resources they need in order to survive. Canadas leader ignored this situation and continued to discriminate Aboriginals (Marshall 2). Several times, Aboriginals were being used by their own country to do their dirty jobs. The Canadian government did not want to risk true Canadian lives, so they used the Aboriginals. By the 1990 s, one would think that the government would come to their senses and realize that the Aboriginals are just like any other human being. However, this was not the case because the Canadian Government tried stealing and taking Aboriginal belongings for their own needs later on. Ultimately, the Aboriginal people were mainly treated unequally by the Government in the Great War, The Manhattan Project, and the Oka Crisis. Aboriginal citizens in the Great War were more than willing to enlist and volunteer however, they were not permitted to do so by the Canadian Government (Armstrong et al.1). Aboriginals hoped that one day, their voices would be heard and that they would get the rights that they deserve. Furthermore, in 1915, the Aboriginals thought the Canadian ... • 16. Imperialism, The Middle East, And East Asia Large busy markets, snake charmers, carpet vendors, and veiled women all invoke ideas of West Africa, the Middle East, and West Asia, but all these ideas come from Oriental fantasies from the nineteenth century. Edward Said the author of Orientalism said that Orientalism was ultimately a political vision of reality whose structure promoted the difference between the familiar (Europe, West, us ) and the strange (the Orient, the East, them ). The nineteenth century was a period of imperialism and tourism that led many western artists to visit West Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Orientalist paintings depicted two major effects, many artists often portrayed something exotic, which was racialized, feminized, and from a sexualized culture from a faraway land. Another effect that artists mainly like Jean LГ©on GГ©rГґme often showed was an authentic glimpse of a location and its inhabitants. Nochlin mentioned that many of GГ©rГґme s paintings worked to persuade their audiences by carefully representing a preexisting Oriental reality. Imperialism is a policy or practice by which a country increases its power by gaining control over other areas of the world. French orientalist paintings in the nineteenth century were intended as propaganda in support of French imperialism, portraying the East as a place of backwardness, lawlessness, and savagery enlightened and disciplined by French rule. While primarily IP addresses are sent to the host by the DHCP now, certain people prefer static IP. Static IP is also used for the URL or uniform resource locator to give a website a permanent residence on the internet. • 30. How Water Affects The Rate Of Change In Water Water normally freezes at 0В°C, however this temperature reading is widely dependent on the substances that are present in the water. When dissolving a substance in water, the freezing point will be lowered, meaning that the temperature has to be colder in order for the water to completely freeze. This is called, The Depression of Freezing Point . Many foreign substances, such as alcohol, sugar and salt, can interrupt the balance of melting and freezing water at 0 degrees Celsius. This has a direct link to the melting point of ice as melting point and freezing point both are 0В°C. When the temperature of water reaches a freezing point, the free flowing molecules get trapped into organized crystal structures creating ice. However, when salt is introduced it disrupts the process. When in contact with water, it splits up into two ions, being Sodium and Chloride (NaCl). These ions move around in between the structure which then leads to the ice melting due to the lowering to the freezing point which means more water molecules are leaving and less are entering the solid. When the temperature lowers even further, the water molecules leaving the solid phase will slow down even further and the rate will eventually match the rate at which water molecules can find the solid in the presence of salt. When water leaves a solid at the same rate as molecules enter, a lower freezig point is established. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Symbolic and Interpretive anthropology studies the way people understand their surroundings, actions and utterance of other members of their society through the examinations of symbols. These symbols can be displayed through processes of myth and ritualand reveal how humans/social groups assign meanings to these symbols in order to address fundamental questions about human social life. Symbolic and interpretative anthropologycan be divided into two major approaches, wherein, one is associated with Victor Turner and the other with Clifford Geertz. Victor Turner was a British anthropologist who studied rituals and social change particularly among the Ndembu of Zambia. Through his work Turner was able to reveal how the process of social change unfolded from the point of view of the individual experiences and the development of common beliefs that are maintained by the social group. From the excerpt, Symbols in Ndembu Ritual , Turner depicts his search for the meaning of ritual and symbolism in puberty/circumcision rights of passage among young girls and boys in relation to the adults in their tribes. People may be aware of it to different degrees, or have differing levels of definition, but no one is entirely unprincipled. Ethical codes may be based off different factors such as religion, society, and family. My personal ethical code is derived from simply one source, the writings of Immanuel Kant. I find that the code described by him is the only one that is truly justified, and therefore the only one I would be able to follow without cognitive dissonance or feeling I was doing the wrong thing. However, as this is my personal code, and I don t want to merely rephrase Kant, I interpret the rules much differently than he did, and in some places make modifications or draw radically different conclusions. A moral imperative is different in that it is merely Do Y. A moral imperative can tell us which hypothetical imperativeto pick. Resistance Of The Patriarchal Norms Of Pakistan Resistance to uprooting the patriarchal norms in Pakistan, especially in rural areas, is another cause of the lack of education, especially for girls. You can see this resistance in the attacks on teachers and the high rates of illiteracy, especially among women and girls. Balochistan is one of these places where educationcan be scarce and the dangers are high. There have also been attacks on teachers, such as one in October, when four female teachers in Quetta had acid thrown at them as they left school(Girls). Risks like this push teachers away from schools, offering less opportunity to the girls who might have attended, if they had the chance. Luckily, some girls been lucky enough to be invested in, and they are the reason we are questioning these cultural norms in the first place. Malala Yousafzi is a perfect example of what happens when someone has the bravery to stand up against an oppressive system. Malala was the victim of the Taliban, being shot in the head for speaking out for her right to an education as a girl, something the Taliban strongly opposed (Lewis 3). Malala had used a pseudonym with the British Broadcasting Company to write about her conditions, and when her real name was eventually revealed, the Taliban had their eyes on her (Lewis 5). Interestingly, Malala s shooting created a spark in the opposite direction the Taliban intended. Killing, or attempted killing, by the Taliban is meant to be a warning. But Malala s situation rustled people in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Social Problems and Social Welfare For many of us when we hear the term Homeless the first image that often springs to mind is a person huddling in a sleeping bag or cardboard box in a doorway of a city street. Whilst media imagery and information released by charities can support this picture the problem of homelessness encompasses a far wider range. This discussion looks at homelessnesswith a particular emphasis on young people that is young people typically aged between 16 and 24. In its simplest form Homelessness means not having a home. In this context a home is not just a house, it is a permanent, private roof over your head, a place of security with community links and support. It should be of a decent standard and affordable. (Shelter Nov 2005) The statutory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Homelessness Act 2002 widened the classification of homeless people having a priority need to include 16 17 year olds, care leavers aged between 18 and 20 and persons who are vulnerable due to them being in care, prison, armed forces or fleeing violence and/or threats of violence. This is a step in the right direction but bearing in mind we are considering young people to be 16 24 where is the support for persons 18 years +? There is still a significant gap here considering the lower minimum wage and benefit levels available in this age range. Other legislation places duties on Social Services departments to provide for people in and leaving care namely The Children Act 1989 and The Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000. What is the impact of homelessness on young people? The More than a roof report acknowledged that historically government s investment in affordable housing has been significantly too low. Council House stock has been depleted through the successful Right to Buy scheme but these stocks have not been replaced. Whilst there has been a required move away from council housing towards housing association accommodation, an ever increasing population combined with this under investment has left a significant gap in the countries overall housing stock. Regional factors are also worth considering The prosperous South East corner of the UK has attracted a migrating population seeking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Hicks And The Is Lm Curve Dan Hill AAEC 8210 December 1st, 2015 Hicks and the IS LM Curve While J.R. Hicks received the Nobel Prize for many of his accomplishments in both macroeconomic and microeconomic research, his development of what he then called the SI LL model, but is now more famously known as the IS LM model, was one of his greatest feats. The IS LM model was Hicks reduction of aggregate demand analysis done by John Maynard Keynes in his book titled The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money published in 1936. The model s purpose was to explain investor decisions dependent on money availability and interest rates in the goods and services market and assets market. The IS LM model now plays an integral role in both general macroeconomic understanding and policy analysis. IS LM stands for investment savings and liquidity money, and can be represented graphically by a downward sloping curve for IS and an upward sloping curve for LM. In the IS curve, anywhere along the curve represents a point where interest rate and income satisfy that total spending equals the economy s total output (real income). Total spending/demand is determined by adding together consumer expenditure, investment, government expenditure, and net exports (investment being the only endogenous variable among the four). In this equation, the assumptions are that; consumer spending is increasing with more disposable income, investment is increasing as interest rates increase, and exports are increasing with ... • 46. Differences Between Formalist And Functionalist Stylistics The Comparison and Contrast between Formalist and Functionalist Stylistics There are several differences way how formalist and functionalist analyze a text. The formalists consist of Roman Jakobson s poetic function of language, Viktor Shklovsky s defamiliarisation and Vladimir Propp s the morphology of the folktale. Besides, the functionalist consists of Halliday with his tripartite functions (ideational, interpersonal, and textual). Both differences will explain below. The first part will flesh out about formalist stylistics. Russian Formalismis known at the beginning of the twentieth century as the great impact on the contemporary stylistics. Functionalist is not only concerning the text, but it is also interested in the role that context play in the process of meaning making. So, there are gradual movements from text to context, from form to function, from semantics to pragmatics and from logic to rhetoric. In Halliday in Routledge (2014:46), Halliday observes that language has tripartite function which can be broken down into three interconnecting metafunctions . They are ideational (to express ideas and experience (clause as representation)), interpersonal (to mediate in the establishment of social relationship(clause as exchange)), textual (to provide the formal properties of language(clause as message)). These three metafunctions are good when these are used all of the in any study of text. Cohesion is the part of textual metafunction which refers to the way in which sentences are linked together in order to make sense. There are several cohesion devices which are able to tie together semantically such as conjunction, ellipsis, substitution and reference. These features of cohesion have function to cohere between the message and the language so that the readers are not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Performance Enhancing Drugs In Sports Essay Why are sports such a large part of society? People enjoy watching sports because most people like competition. People enjoy competing with each other whether it is just friendly competition or as their job. Some dislike losing so much that they will go to extremes to make sure that they are better than their rival. They do this by using performance enhancing drugs to be better than their opponent. Professional athletes should have to be drug tested due to the many health risks it causes, and in many cases the use of these substances is considered cheating by many sports organizations. Athletes go to many extremes to be able to use these performance enhancing drugs. Occasionally the athletes will go to lengths to make them hard for tests... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many athletic organizations have banned athletes from using these substances; they consider the use of these substances to be a form of cheating. Bouchard and Sprague state that some professional athletes use steroids and other drugs to gain a competitive advantage in their sport. Such an advantage is generally considered by most athletic organizations to be cheating. These organizations consider performance enhancing substance use to be cheating because this gives the individual taking the substances an unfair advantage against their opponents that do not use these drugs. The unfair advantage that would take place in the competition would alter the true results. In any competition breaking the rules to gain an unfair advantage is considered cheating. Dr. M Schermer author of On the Argument that Enhancement is Cheating explains that if cheating is understood as breaking the rules in order to gain an unfair advantage over other, it can be argued that some enhancements are a form of cheating. If the sport of activity an athlete is participating in has specific rules that prohibit the use of certain substances and the athlete violates those rules and is aware that they are violating the rule, then that person is considered to be cheating; if an athlete consciously breaks a rule to gain an advantage over his or her rival, that is considered cheating. The use of performance enhancing substances is breaking rules and cheating, according to most athletic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
