Tax Vs Flat Tax
Life would be so much simpler if taxes were a flat percentage for all income levels, with maybe a few
exceptions for the lowest income levels. A flat tax system is a very simplified version of our current
progressive tax system. One with no itemized deductions or credits, and increased personal exemption
amounts.
To increase savings and investments, the following types of income would be taxed at reduced rates,
by allowing a 50% deduction, qualified interest and dividend income, long term capital gains, and
retirement and Social Security. We could take the social engineering out of our system; stop catering
to the special interest groups, and make the system fair, simple, and easy to administer for everyone
who wants to pay his fair share. No more, no less. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A flat tax is a single rate that covers all income brackets of taxpayers, rather than the current
progressive system, in which taxes higher income individuals at increased rates and includes
numerous deductions and exemptions. Under A 9% plan, Americans would pay a flat 9 percent rate on
their personal incomes, corporate incomes, and on sales. Another option would be a Cut, Balance and
Grow system that would give taxpayers the choice to opt out of the current system and pay 20 percent
on individual income and allow for a few of the deductions in the current code. Proponents of the flat
tax argue that it would simplify the tax code while broadening the tax base. Opponents say the flat tax
would shift much of the revenue burden to middle and low income Americans while lowering taxes on
the wealthiest

An Analysis Of Siri Hustvedt s Living With Strangers
Living with strangers
When moving from a small community, into a larger alien community, a whole new ruleset applies.
When you move from a small town in Minnesota to an enormous city such as New York, you are very
likely to feel alienated and out of place. In Minnesota, Siri Hustvedt greeted every person she passed
on the street, not because she wanted to, but because if she didn t, she would be seen as a snob. When
she moved to New York, she quickly discovered how impractical and unsound it would be to greet
every person she passed. This is exactly what she talks about in her 2002 essay Living With Strangers
. The essay speaks of Siri Hustvedt s life events. The events are not told in a chronological order, and
therefore, the essay is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She does this by telling us various stories of how she, her daughter and her husband have acted in
different situations where a madman has broken the social norm, and actually acted up in public. In all
the stories, no one has reacted when they madman has gone crazy, the onlookers didn t react. Neither
did Hustvedt, her daughter or her husband. They just followed the PRETEND IT ISN T HAPPENING
law. This is again very relatable to the readers. It is quite rare, to see people getting involved in
something that is happening right next to them. This is what Siri Hustvedt discusses in her third part of
the essay. Siri Hustvedt has up until now, been very critical of the entire concept concerning the
PRETEND IT ISN T HAPPENING law, but now she acknowledges some few advantages with this
law. She does this with an anecdote that her husband told her. It was about a man, who told another,
very tall and strong man Excuse me, sir for bothering you, but I want to point out that it s against the
law to smoke on the subway . To which the man answered, Do you wanna die? . This anecdote is used,
to illustrate the positive sites of the PRETEND IT ISN T HAPPENING LAW . This threat, was most
likely just a threat, but it illustrates, as Siri Hustvedt said: Taking action may be viewed as courageous
or merely stupid . However, Siri Hustvedt does not believe this is a very common thing, and to ensure
us it isn t she takes use of another story, which was told to her by her daughter, Sophie. Sophie, who
was 14 years old at this time, was riding the subway, when a stranger suddenly eyeballed her, and then
proceeded to publicly announce his love for her. Sophie did her best, and followed the PRETEND IT
ISN T HAPPENING law, but she was still very uncomfortable with the situation. This was until the
person sitting next to her interfered, and actually calmed Sophie down

Thucydides Accounts of the Degradation of Athenian Honor
Thucydides account of the Peloponnesian war served as a window into Athenian societal culture.
Carrying the reader from Pericles moving speech to the assembly, through Cleon and Diodotus oratory
battle over the fate of Mytilene, and finally to the Athenian proposal to the Melians, Thucydides
detailed the transformation of Athens from a state based on justice and freedom to a empire with a
corrupted soul. This corruption did not occur over night, but was the result of increasing tyrannical
behavior by the part of Athens in its interactions with other Greek city states. The stages of this
development can be analyzed into three parts: Pericles war speech, the dialogue on Mytilene, and the
Melian debate. Pericles speech was propagated by the horn of war against the Lacedaemonians. In the
midst of the conflict, the Athenians called an assembly to determine their course of action. Their
choices were to either agree to Sparta s demands, which included dismantling the siege of Potidaea,
freeing Aegina from their rule, and cancelling their embargo of Megara, or war. At this juncture, the
prime Athenian statesman, Pericles, presented his advice: never give in. For Pericles, Athens can never
subjugate itself to any power and must fight for its autonomy. In order to win the war, Athens must
focus on its people and avoid mistakes. They cannot base their campaign on saving their property, but
keeping the integrity of their forces. This stance is exemplified as Pericles said,

Bataan Death March Essay
The Bataan Death March A P.O.W is standing next to a fresh water stream extremely dehydrated. He
is forced to stand next to the stream by a Japanese soldier. The P.O.W. is not allowed to drink from the
stream under any circumstances. He can no longer bear it, drops to his knees, and takes a drink of
water from the stream. Although he does not hear the Japanese soldier walking up behind him as he
takes out his sword. With one quick slash the P.O.W. s head drops to the ground severed and bloody
(Kaufman 89). The Japanese soldiers were too harsh when it was not necessary. There was no reason
for the Japanese soldier to chop off the P.O.W. s head when he was simply drinking water. The

Rations on the Corregidor were tiny 8 ounce cans of corned beef. One can was food for ten men a day.
Luckily air raids brought dead fish to the surface at the sea. One marine risked shark and air attack to
retrieve a floating crate only to find that it held four jars of ink. Just as he agreed to trade them for
food, flying shrapnel broke all but two of the jars (Grolier 48). The prisoners were desperate and
wanted food so badly that, like the man in the story, they would risk attack from sharks and air raids.
The Japanese soldiers were quick to behead them. Treatment of the prisoners was harsh and they were
treated like animals. The Japanese soldiers attacked the Bataan Peninsula on January 9th (Weinberg
46). The Japanese soldiers were rough and harsh. They murdered the prisoners with ease. They were
just as bad as the German Nazis. The Japanese did not murder in the scientific, systematic way the
Nazis did. Although they were racist as they believed other races were inferior (Bard 126). To be
compared to German Nazis is not a good thing. The commanding officer during the march was
Masahara Homma. After World War II he was convicted of war crimes and shot. The war crimes were
very bad and harsh. They were bad enough for Homma to be shot. The Japanese soldiers were brutal
and showed no mercy to the undeserving prisoners. The numbers of the march were too high to be
acceptable. There was 60 miles of marching (Kaufman 42). On

Regaining Control in Anna Karenina Essay
Regaining Control in Anna Karenina
Anna Karenina features significant clusters of scenes, all of which describe notable moments in the
development of the novel s major figures. One of the most important clusters is when Anna travels to
see Vronsky. On her way her perceptions change; she throws her searchlight upon herself. Arriving at
the next station she sees the rails and knows what must be done.
Anna has had control over her own life taken away from her, due to the societal limitations on her
choices as a woman. She becomes resentful of the society she lives in, and turns that frustration on the
unsympathetic Vronsky, who retains his own freedom as well as control over her own happiness. She
is too proud and passionate to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anna is not willing to accept a position of meekness, as Dolly does. She is, in her position, expected to
stay at home while Vronsky has the freedom of an unmarried man. With the advantage of marriage,
Vronsky would be forced to treat her as a wife, as a respectable woman, but as it is, he does not have
to. He instead treats her as a mistress valuable when entertaining, but potentially a real drag on one s
social life. Vronsky believes in the submissive role of women, and his opposition to their having the
liberty that he enjoys makes Anna crazy. Vronsky disapproves of high schools for girls and Anna sees
this as a slight toward her own occupations (773). Tolstoy plays dumb by saying that this issue was
not close to the heart of either, but in fact, breaking the woman s traditional place what Anna has spent
the past few years doing. If Anna had her own education she would not be trapped with bound hands
in her present position.
After Anna has swallowed her own opinion for the sake of preserving harmony, Vronsky looks at her
penitnent, meek expression and perceives that she is in one of her good moods. (774). A good mood is
when she assumes the feminine role and takes the blame for everything that is wrong with the
relationship. He actually perceives her as being happier this way. He cannot seem to understand why a
woman would want more than to be

May 9, 2017 Imagine a guy named Nathan Hale who valued freedom more than his own life. It is hard
to believe Nathan Hale was a guy that would risk his life for a bit of information. His early life, adult
life and contribution to the Revolutionary War shows how much he wanted freedom and liberty. The
early life for Nathan Hale showed how much he liked school and school related things. Nathan Hale
was born in June 6, 1775 in Coventry, Connecticut. When Nathan was growing up he had one brother
named Enoch and his parents were Richard and Elizabeth Hale. He went to a school called Yale

Themes In Seedfolks
Seedfolks is a story about people living in Cleveland and they live in a community that is not diverse
at all. The characters are all different races, so it is hard for them to go out in the world without
thinking they are being judged or bullied by other people. In the story, we see the characters building
up to create a community garden. This story is about how one act of kindness can generate another.
But that s not the only theme to the story. There are tons more morals and themes. Such as the garden.
The garden helps bring people together and makes the dirty neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio more
diverse. The characters in the book all have something in common, they all deal with family issues
and their races and cultures make them feel like they don t belong. But when the community garden is
created, everything starts to change. People become more open about their feelings, they have a lot of
friends, and everyone we read about connects back to one another. The characters in Seedfolks are
different from one another. They are all different races which makes them really self conscious about
how they look when they go out in public. They do not easily meet new people due to their cultural
differences and isolation in a large city. But when they convert the vacant lot into the community
garden, this provides them with the chance to break out and meet new people. The book shows that
this is an important thing because the more diverse and close a neighborhood

Physical Therapy Experience
Hello everyone, The physical therapist first encounter with a patient often serves as a telltale of what
to expect and how to go about the therapeutic relationship. The initial contact with a patient gives the
therapist an impressive view of the tip of the iceberg, in a way it provides important gauges on how to
navigate to and around a patient s persona. PTs should be cognizant of the premise that the mind and
body are inseparable, and these two realms work in synergy to define a person s current health status.
In our day to day practice, patients are referred to physical therapy due to their physical impairments
and disability. With a life changing event as a result of a health condition patient may manifest signs
and symptoms of impaired mental wellness depression. As Fair (2011) has elucidated, diagnosing a

disorders and presents with a better prognosis compared to major depressive, depressive disorder not

where AD is most commonly diagnosed is those of the population with physical illness (Casey, 2014)

disturbance that will resolve over time when the stressor is resolved. Symptoms to look for AD are
low mood, sadness, worry, anxiety, insomnia, poor concentration, loss of self esteem, hopelessness,
feeling trapped, having no good options, and feeling isolated or cut off from others (Frank Bienenfeld,
2014). As we can see these symptoms would have a substantial impact on a patient s ability to

The Loss Of Stillborn Loss
Stillborn loss
Historically perinatal loss such as stillborn is rarely a topic of discussion. (Avelin, Erlandsson,
Hildingsson, RĆ„destad, 2011). Stillborn loss was not viewed as an problem, and was expected for
mothers to forget about the baby, and have another one, while siblings were told to forget about the
baby and not talk about the loss (Avelin et al., 2011). Perinatal loss responses can be vary widely as it
covers variety of loss from pregnancy to birth within a few weeks, but most often it is an unexpected
loss for many families who typically do not know what to do, what to expect and how to handle grief
(O leary Warland, 2013). Furthermore, there is very little information on Stillbirth experiences
especially about men who lose their child(Bonnette Broom, 2012). Experiencing the loss of a child
can be very difficult and often complicate grief which can affect parents social well being (Kersting
Wagner, 2012). In pregnancies that follows a loss such as perinatal loss, it has been found that parents
experience high levels of psychological distress, anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress. (O
leary Warland, 2013; Kersting Wagner, 2012)
Impact on parents
Parents develop an ongoing relationship with their unborn child throughout pregnancy stages. With
unexpected loss such as a stillborn, parents suddenly feel the event to be surreal. (Ryninks, Roberts
Collins, McKenzie McHarg, Horsch, 2014). Parents expressed that stillbirth would never happen to

In the 1600 amp;#8217;s, in a small town in a market place, in a time when religion was the only base

The woman has born a child who she is always seen with, whom is her one and only companion.

that I saw the brand clearly. It was a work of art. Never have I seen such good stitching. Standing in
the light, her hair taken back, looking without expression. A picturesque woman, voluptuous breasts
and smooth curves seem to be noticeable even though the scarlet letter seemed to steal much of the
attention. Her complexion so fair, and so white in the light. Her dress, though simple, hung on her like

almost ridiculous to think it as a mark of shame. I moved closer to her general direction, hoping that I
could get a closer look, as if that would let me into her mind, or into her thoughts. My curiosity grew
larger, and I wondered how she felt knowing all eyes were upon her chest, upon the mark. She showed
no signs of emotion, not a smile, let alone a frown, as if none around her existed. Could she feel the
eyes burning upon her? Well as sure as day, she turned around and looked me in the eye. I froze. I saw

Lawrence V. Texas Essay
Lawrence v. Texas In the case Lawrence v. Texas (539 U.S. 558, 2003) which was the United States
Supreme Court case the criminal prohibition of the homosexual pederasty was invalidated in Texas.
The same issue has been already addressed in 1989 in the case Bowers v. Hardwick, however, the
constitutional protection of sexual privacy was not found at that time. Lawrence overruled Bowers and
held that sexual conduct was the right protected by the due process under the Fourteenth Amendment.
The effects of the ruling were quite widespread and led to invalidation of the similar laws throughout

Magna Carta Research Paper
The Magna Carta was a charter in 1215 that gave rights to protect its subjects from King John and his
oppressive rulings. It contained sixty three clauses that detailed everything from land rights to legal
rights. This document gave protection to the people from the tyrant King and placed no man above the
law, not even the king. Unfortunately, the document failed with civil war ensuing months later.
King John was excommunicated from the church in 1209 for seizing church property and selling it
back to the church at a profit. He then used these funds to build an English Navy to invade Ireland in
1210. He then furthered his exhibition to invade Poitou, France and after a humiliating defeat to

The Magna Carta is typical of the era because, people were tired of being oppressed by a tyrant. This
is evident in a writing by Matthew Paris, Foul as it is, hell itself is made fouler by the presence of
King John. The writing is also specific to its time, the document was written in Old English. The
subject of the document was a series of clauses to ensure that not even the king was above the law.
This work was considerably unusual for its time, because the king had always been the Judge and the
Jury. The people were his subjects and the people were subjected to his rulings. A king could levy
taxes at any rate from his subjects to support his war efforts. But, as stated in the Magna Carta under
the 12th clause it states No scutage (money levied for war) or aid may be levied in our kingdom

Isaiah Research Paper
1st Isaiah
From a historical and geographical perspective, the book of Isaiah is an accurate representation. A lot
of what has been found through archeology supports the events in the book. The book of Isaiah
focuses on the south kingdom of Judah. During the book, the North Kingdom is in the process of its
down fall. The book of Isaiah gives us insight into the minds of the southern kings at the time. Thus,
we are able to see the historical context of how the south eventually fell.
Much of Isaiah s messages to the Kings are in the form of political instruction. Isaiah first important
message as a prophet comes during the time of King Ahaz. At this time Assyria has grown very strong.
The North Kingdom is already vassal. Thus, the north and Aram are planning a rebellion. They
threaten Ahaz by telling him to join the rebellion or they will invade the south kingdom. Isaiah s
message is to stay out of the conflict and trust God. Ahaz however, calls Assyria to aid him and uses
treasures from the temple in order to bribe the Assyrians (Brubacher, Meta). In the end, Assyria
crushes the rebellion saving the south but making them vassal in the process. The next king, Hezekiah
inherits a vassal nation. He is most known for his rebellion against Assyria. Isaiah tells him to stay out
of the revolt as the lord will take of the situation. Hezekiah believes he will have a chance since a new
ruler recently took the throne and decides to join the rebellion. In theory, this mentally would have
made sense. The time of a new king taking the throne is the best time to rebel. His disregard for the

Civilism And Civilization In William Golding s Lord Of The...
Every day we hear about violence in the news, about terrorists, shooters, and robbers that we do not
associate with ourselves. However, hidden within everyone is that innate evil as is shown through
Golding s story. The novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is set on an uninhabited island
where a group of young British boys find themselves stranded without any adults. Overcoming their
joy, the boys develop a society of sorts, finding ways to survive and get rescued. However, the
civilization divides. Some of the boys go astray, their primitive instincts emerging through their
actions as they become more violent. The boys lose their identities as cultured humans. They revert to
the nature of pre civilization beings with the aid of the masks they don in order to hunt as well as to
identify savages. Golding develops the characters, specifically Ralph and Jack, showing the loss of
their innocence and steady maturing. However, overly exposed to the wild, Jack and the hunters id, or
their instincts unbounded by society or morals, materializes. The id is the impulsive section of the
mind that contain the inner desires and are restricted by the ego and superego which are the
consciousness. The continuous battle between savagery, represented by the Lord of the Flies, and
civilization, represented by the conch and Piggy, is presented throughout the story as the two sides of
society battle. In Golding s Lord of the Flies, it is depicted through the actions of the boys that when
separated from civilization, one s inevitably evil nature emerges, their true attributes exposed as their
ties to society dissolve.
With the assistance of the masks and the deindividuation that occurs when acting as a group, the boys
on the island lose their sense of identity. Jack and his hunters made clay masks in order to hunt,
claiming the pigs they preyed upon did not smell them but saw them. As he set the mask upon himself,
[Jack] began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling (Golding, 64) The mask was
what Jack hid [behind], liberated from shame and self consciousness, (64) As Jack puts his mask on
for the first time, it foreshadows the future violence that will come. He snarls as if he was an animal,

The Early Childhood Curriculum Te Wh ʒƄ Riki Essay
In Aotearoa, the early childhood curriculum Te Whāriki has an immense focus on children s holistic
development which is fostered and guided by interconnecting principles and strands that construct the
curriculum. Within the strands, there are goals that teacher s educators must follow to provide high
quality teaching to sustain and fulfil the curriculum.
Te Whāriki describes curriculum as the sum total of the experiences, activities, and events, whether
direct or indirect, which occur within an environment designed to foster children s learning and
development (Ministry of Education, 1996, p.10). These experiences, activities and events vary from
centre to centre; though still provide opportunities for healthy holistic development. The arts and
literacies foster children s development of verbal and non verbal communication and language and
provide an exploration of theories of mean making. Through the concept of multi literacies, multi
modal ways of thinking are acknowledged the various ways children learn to process their thoughts,
emotions and actions. Throughout Te Whāriki, the arts and multi literacies are woven through
opportunities of dramatic play, drama, dance, music, representational resources and through ways
children represent and reflect their cultural backgrounds such as Māori children engaging and
participating in the haka, poi and waiata (Wright, 2003).
The Ministry of Education explains that having narrative assessments available for children to

Hawthorne Effect Observation
To begin with, this is a qualitative research paper that is based on observing two small micro level

CASE STUDY The Fork And Dagger Pub Essay examples
Founded in Straun, Ontario by Richard Lynch, the Fork and Dagger Pub was a growing business and
showed much success after opening in 1993. By using word of mouth advertising with the high traffic
taken in from playing the Norway Olympics in the pub, the Fork and Dagger Pub found itself with a
lot of sports enthusiasts as regular customers as well as students from local schools. But since 2008,
the Fork and Dagger Pub has declined in revenue and local patrons have seemed to vanish. With new
competitors in the area, and net income decreasing over $100,000 in four years Richard has decided to

Only business essential expenses were kept the same. So it would appear that external factors are to
blame for the Pub s revenue decline, for the only internal factor to compromise the pub s business is
the lack of change and innovation to the bar atmosphere and scenic value. Overall the Fork and
Dagger Pub has been identified as unfocused market strategy, and in need of a desperate change, for it
cannot keep up with new and growing businesses in the local area.
The Fork and Dagger Pub has currently two business proposals to help improve and regain revenue
for the establishment. Richard s two sons, Jason Bradley, both has prepared general ideas of where
they can take the business s target market. Jason s business proposal involves changing the restaurant s
old and outdated dƩcor and working on promoting the business to compete with others bars. His plan
outlines purchasing pool tables ($5000 each), karaoke machine ($1500), DJ nights ($75 $125 an hour),
as well as overall renovating the interior (base at $6000) and changing for new tables and chairs at
$2000 a piece. He also hasn t really focused on the promotion side, but has ideas for Ladies Night,
Happy Hour as well as utilizing social media campaigns to give out coupons for drinks or food.
Bradley s business proposal requires rather a change of target market. Bradley and his partner are

Football Concussions and Head Injuries
Football is one of the most popular sports played today, but, many injuries can occur while playing
football. Some of these injuries may include broken bones, spinal injuries and concussions. High
school football accounts for forty seven percent of all reported sports
concussions(headcasecompany.com). A concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury
(MTBI), is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head or body.
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative disease of the brain and is associated with
repeated head traumas like concussions (CNN.com). Brain injuries cause more deaths in sports than
any other injury. If we want to continue the sport of football in our youth and young teens, we need to
have ways to prevent head injuries. Some ways of preventing head injuries would be different helmet
designs, better tackling techniques or less contact time in practices.

Differences Between Christian Science And Science
Similarities and Differences
There are quite a few differences between Christian Science and Scientology. For instance, Christian
Science started in 1879. It was founded by a poor woman named Mary Baker Eddy who became rich
from her new founded religion. Scientology was founded in 1953. Unlike Christian Science,
Scientology is an independent religion. It was founded by a man named L. Ron Hubbard. Christian
Science is based off Christianity. It is a new interpretation of the Bible. Scientology is a religious
responds to therapeutic help. Christian Science centers on the idea of God. Scientology focuses on a
person in need of help. Christian Science sees God as the only creator. Scientology believes that the
creator is a person completely free. God has no importance in Scientology.
They have a few similaries that also differ. For example, both have churches. A Christian Science
church holds an hour long Sunday service. Just like traditional Christian services. They also have a
Wednesday testimony meeting. A church of Scientology is open and staffed every day of the week,
from morning until late at night. This way they can have auditing and training courses available. In the
auditing system, the auditor is one who is trained in Scientology methods. They listen to the learner
for the purpose of restoring his or her abilities and achieving full potential.
Both religions also offer a path to salvation. The differences between Scientology and Christian

I would like to begin my paper with the quote by John Kennedy learning and Leadership are

I think it is a great saying about leadership I have ever heard. There are many books about leadership.
But if someone wants to be a good leader and if they do not have leadership abilities, character from
birth, they will never be able to be a good leader. When we say leader, we have to think about people
who are able to encourage their people to believe them, their thoughts, be ready to follow them. There
can be another ability of leaders. It is to do right things and make their people to do the same. But not
like some leaders, who do not do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These books about leadership can be examples for those people who have leadership skill; these books
can be a guide for those people. These books about leadership will help people with leadership
abilities to make their job easier, but will not make them good leaders.
When I read this book we can understand that commanders as good leaders cannot be far from their
men they command. Quesada has this character, he saw his men as his sons. Moreover good leaders
must be able to put themselves in a place of people in front of them. Such kind of characters can make
officers a good leaders and General Elwood had these skills and characters. These characters made
him a great leader. His leadership skills were not dispensed from someone, he was interested to learn
more and his characters may be from birth or from family nurture, education helped him to become
good leader.
Family nurture also very important for people to be in a right way and to do right things, there are
many about this. There are many families with high education, with high cultural values, but their
children do not become like their parents or like they want them to be. The reasons might be different.
The first reason is that people do not spend time with their children, or they do not have time for this.
Moreover it depends on people s character form birth.
When I chose this book I thought it would be very informative and I would be able to get more

Water Fluoridation Must Stop Essay
Fluoride compounds have been added to water supplies since as early as the 1950s because claims
were made to support fluoride s use as a cavity preventer. However, studies conducted even decades
before have shown that fluoride is an extremely hazardous substance that should be completely
avoided. These views or claims about fluoride are just too contradictory, both cannot be true. Fluoride
has hidden dangers that not enough people know about and should be removed from the water
supplies despite false reports that it is actually beneficial, and the practice of water fluoridation should
be completely eliminated.
First a little bit about fluoride needs to be known. These are the unarguable facts about fluoride.

Naturally fluoridated areas preceded the field trials since fluoride occurs naturally in some areas.
(Oral) Communities with naturally occurring fluoride in water supplies were chosen for the trials,
because results could be seen in these communities without so many years of testing. The studies
showed that fluoride reduces dental caries to some extent depending on the amount of ingestion.
These positive results lead to water fluoridation becoming a popular practice throughout civilized
areas of the world. Putting a substance like fluoride in municipal water supplies is a good way to
medicate many people at a time, since everybody drinking from the water supply would have a
constant intake of fluoride. The big advantage of water fluoridation is that it benefits all residents in a
community regardless of age, socio economic status, education or employment. (Kirshen)
The number one purpose for water fluoridation is for the promotion of healthy and strong teeth. As it
turns out fluoride doesn t even help with teeth, in fact it causes many problems with their formation.
According to Dean Murphy DDS in his book The Devil s Poison: Fluorotic enamel is more porous and
structurally weaker having a wear resistance that is commonly 40% to 60% of normal. (Murphy 57)

  • 2. Tax Vs Flat Tax Life would be so much simpler if taxes were a flat percentage for all income levels, with maybe a few exceptions for the lowest income levels. A flat tax system is a very simplified version of our current progressive tax system. One with no itemized deductions or credits, and increased personal exemption amounts. To increase savings and investments, the following types of income would be taxed at reduced rates, by allowing a 50% deduction, qualified interest and dividend income, long term capital gains, and retirement and Social Security. We could take the social engineering out of our system; stop catering to the special interest groups, and make the system fair, simple, and easy to administer for everyone who wants to pay his fair share. No more, no less. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A flat tax is a single rate that covers all income brackets of taxpayers, rather than the current progressive system, in which taxes higher income individuals at increased rates and includes numerous deductions and exemptions. Under A 9% plan, Americans would pay a flat 9 percent rate on their personal incomes, corporate incomes, and on sales. Another option would be a Cut, Balance and Grow system that would give taxpayers the choice to opt out of the current system and pay 20 percent on individual income and allow for a few of the deductions in the current code. Proponents of the flat tax argue that it would simplify the tax code while broadening the tax base. Opponents say the flat tax would shift much of the revenue burden to middle and low income Americans while lowering taxes on the wealthiest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. An Analysis Of Siri Hustvedt s Living With Strangers Living with strangers When moving from a small community, into a larger alien community, a whole new ruleset applies. When you move from a small town in Minnesota to an enormous city such as New York, you are very likely to feel alienated and out of place. In Minnesota, Siri Hustvedt greeted every person she passed on the street, not because she wanted to, but because if she didn t, she would be seen as a snob. When she moved to New York, she quickly discovered how impractical and unsound it would be to greet every person she passed. This is exactly what she talks about in her 2002 essay Living With Strangers . The essay speaks of Siri Hustvedt s life events. The events are not told in a chronological order, and therefore, the essay is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She does this by telling us various stories of how she, her daughter and her husband have acted in different situations where a madman has broken the social norm, and actually acted up in public. In all the stories, no one has reacted when they madman has gone crazy, the onlookers didn t react. Neither did Hustvedt, her daughter or her husband. They just followed the PRETEND IT ISN T HAPPENING law. This is again very relatable to the readers. It is quite rare, to see people getting involved in something that is happening right next to them. This is what Siri Hustvedt discusses in her third part of the essay. Siri Hustvedt has up until now, been very critical of the entire concept concerning the PRETEND IT ISN T HAPPENING law, but now she acknowledges some few advantages with this law. She does this with an anecdote that her husband told her. It was about a man, who told another, very tall and strong man Excuse me, sir for bothering you, but I want to point out that it s against the law to smoke on the subway . To which the man answered, Do you wanna die? . This anecdote is used, to illustrate the positive sites of the PRETEND IT ISN T HAPPENING LAW . This threat, was most likely just a threat, but it illustrates, as Siri Hustvedt said: Taking action may be viewed as courageous or merely stupid . However, Siri Hustvedt does not believe this is a very common thing, and to ensure us it isn t she takes use of another story, which was told to her by her daughter, Sophie. Sophie, who was 14 years old at this time, was riding the subway, when a stranger suddenly eyeballed her, and then proceeded to publicly announce his love for her. Sophie did her best, and followed the PRETEND IT ISN T HAPPENING law, but she was still very uncomfortable with the situation. This was until the person sitting next to her interfered, and actually calmed Sophie down ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Thucydides Accounts of the Degradation of Athenian Honor Thucydides account of the Peloponnesian war served as a window into Athenian societal culture. Carrying the reader from Pericles moving speech to the assembly, through Cleon and Diodotus oratory battle over the fate of Mytilene, and finally to the Athenian proposal to the Melians, Thucydides detailed the transformation of Athens from a state based on justice and freedom to a empire with a corrupted soul. This corruption did not occur over night, but was the result of increasing tyrannical behavior by the part of Athens in its interactions with other Greek city states. The stages of this development can be analyzed into three parts: Pericles war speech, the dialogue on Mytilene, and the Melian debate. Pericles speech was propagated by the horn of war against the Lacedaemonians. In the midst of the conflict, the Athenians called an assembly to determine their course of action. Their choices were to either agree to Sparta s demands, which included dismantling the siege of Potidaea, freeing Aegina from their rule, and cancelling their embargo of Megara, or war. At this juncture, the prime Athenian statesman, Pericles, presented his advice: never give in. For Pericles, Athens can never subjugate itself to any power and must fight for its autonomy. In order to win the war, Athens must focus on its people and avoid mistakes. They cannot base their campaign on saving their property, but keeping the integrity of their forces. This stance is exemplified as Pericles said, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Bataan Death March Essay The Bataan Death March A P.O.W is standing next to a fresh water stream extremely dehydrated. He is forced to stand next to the stream by a Japanese soldier. The P.O.W. is not allowed to drink from the stream under any circumstances. He can no longer bear it, drops to his knees, and takes a drink of water from the stream. Although he does not hear the Japanese soldier walking up behind him as he takes out his sword. With one quick slash the P.O.W. s head drops to the ground severed and bloody (Kaufman 89). The Japanese soldiers were too harsh when it was not necessary. There was no reason for the Japanese soldier to chop off the P.O.W. s head when he was simply drinking water. The horrible treatment of the P.O.W. s occurred during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rations on the Corregidor were tiny 8 ounce cans of corned beef. One can was food for ten men a day. Luckily air raids brought dead fish to the surface at the sea. One marine risked shark and air attack to retrieve a floating crate only to find that it held four jars of ink. Just as he agreed to trade them for food, flying shrapnel broke all but two of the jars (Grolier 48). The prisoners were desperate and wanted food so badly that, like the man in the story, they would risk attack from sharks and air raids. The Japanese soldiers were quick to behead them. Treatment of the prisoners was harsh and they were treated like animals. The Japanese soldiers attacked the Bataan Peninsula on January 9th (Weinberg 46). The Japanese soldiers were rough and harsh. They murdered the prisoners with ease. They were just as bad as the German Nazis. The Japanese did not murder in the scientific, systematic way the Nazis did. Although they were racist as they believed other races were inferior (Bard 126). To be compared to German Nazis is not a good thing. The commanding officer during the march was Masahara Homma. After World War II he was convicted of war crimes and shot. The war crimes were very bad and harsh. They were bad enough for Homma to be shot. The Japanese soldiers were brutal and showed no mercy to the undeserving prisoners. The numbers of the march were too high to be acceptable. There was 60 miles of marching (Kaufman 42). On ... Arriving at the next station she sees the rails and knows what must be done. Anna has had control over her own life taken away from her, due to the societal limitations on her choices as a woman. She becomes resentful of the society she lives in, and turns that frustration on the unsympathetic Vronsky, who retains his own freedom as well as control over her own happiness. She is, in her position, expected to stay at home while Vronsky has the freedom of an unmarried man. With the advantage of marriage, Vronsky would be forced to treat her as a wife, as a respectable woman, but as it is, he does not have to. He instead treats her as a mistress valuable when entertaining, but potentially a real drag on one s social life. Vronsky believes in the submissive role of women, and his opposition to their having the liberty that he enjoys makes Anna crazy. Vronsky disapproves of high schools for girls and Anna sees this as a slight toward her own occupations (773). Tolstoy plays dumb by saying that this issue was not close to the heart of either, but in fact, breaking the woman s traditional place what Anna has spent the past few years doing. If Anna had her own education she would not be trapped with bound hands in her present position. After Anna has swallowed her own opinion for the sake of preserving harmony, Vronsky looks at her penitnent, meek expression and perceives that she is in one of her good moods. (774). A good mood is when she assumes the feminine role and takes the blame for everything that is wrong with the relationship. He actually perceives her as being happier this way. • 20. Civilism And Civilization In William Golding s Lord Of The... Every day we hear about violence in the news, about terrorists, shooters, and robbers that we do not associate with ourselves. However, hidden within everyone is that innate evil as is shown through Golding s story. The novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is set on an uninhabited island where a group of young British boys find themselves stranded without any adults. Overcoming their joy, the boys develop a society of sorts, finding ways to survive and get rescued. However, the civilization divides. Some of the boys go astray, their primitive instincts emerging through their actions as they become more violent. The boys lose their identities as cultured humans. They revert to the nature of pre civilization beings with the aid of the masks they don in order to hunt as well as to identify savages. Golding develops the characters, specifically Ralph and Jack, showing the loss of their innocence and steady maturing. However, overly exposed to the wild, Jack and the hunters id, or their instincts unbounded by society or morals, materializes. The id is the impulsive section of the mind that contain the inner desires and are restricted by the ego and superego which are the consciousness. The continuous battle between savagery, represented by the Lord of the Flies, and civilization, represented by the conch and Piggy, is presented throughout the story as the two sides of society battle. In Golding s Lord of the Flies, it is depicted through the actions of the boys that when separated from civilization, one s inevitably evil nature emerges, their true attributes exposed as their ties to society dissolve. With the assistance of the masks and the deindividuation that occurs when acting as a group, the boys on the island lose their sense of identity. Jack and his hunters made clay masks in order to hunt, claiming the pigs they preyed upon did not smell them but saw them. As he set the mask upon himself, [Jack] began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling (Golding, 64) The mask was what Jack hid [behind], liberated from shame and self consciousness, (64) As Jack puts his mask on for the first time, it foreshadows the future violence that will come.
