Consumerism And The Conformity Of Consumer Culture
The dominance of capitalist countries has facilitated the conformity of global civilization and cultural
environments resulting in an increase of consumer cultures (Sarmela, 1977; Chaney, 2004). As
capitalism experiences a natural and unavoidable expansion, consumers engage with consumer culture
creating invisible products such as social status, identity, cultures, and ethical relationships (Sternberg,
2017). There are two sides to consumer culture that are the values held by society; those who conform
and those who rebel (Turow McAllister, 2014). All participants of society align with either submission
or resistance to dominant ideas, values, and social structures. However, as a result of continued
progressive diversity and fragmentation, the distinction between submissive and resistance are blurred.
Nevertheless, those who resist and rebel are still participants of consumer culture. Instead they instead
form sub cultures in society with alternative beliefs, values and ideas that challenge the mainstream
(Chaney, 2004). In order to better understand the relationship between consumption practice and the
resistance of consumer culture, theories of reflexive project of self, prosumers, lifestyle
commodification, and incorporation will be analyzed in relation to the vegan movement.
Prominent media scholar, John Fiske (1989), theorized numerous ways in which the consumption of
media and prevalent culture, even shopping itself, could be conceptualized as acts of resistance.
Resistance can be defined as the ways in which a subcultural style and activity works to challenge the
dominant social order (Southerton, 2011). Veganism is becoming an increasingly popular lifestyle
choice for health and environmental conscious individuals and is viewed as a form of resistance to
mainstream consumption practices. The consumer develops their identity as someone who does not
use animal derived food or products of any kind such as; dairy, eggs, fur, leather, feathers, or any
goods involving animal testing (Lawrence, 1993). Veganism is an extended form of vegetarianism,
and though the term was defined in 1944, the concept of a plant based diet can be traced back to
ancient Indian and Eastern Mediterranean societies (Suddath,

Shitty First Drafts By Anne Lammott Analysis
Writing is something we have been used to since childhood. Beginning to write with just a few words
and activities to improve our pendmanship. From easy sentences we all gradually improve our writing,
as expected from higher levels of education. However, throughout all this time, many of us have been
writing blind. Only writing what is seen an necessary, oblivious to the true skill and precision it takes
to actually write quality work. Through the use of Anne Lammott s article Shitty First Drafts and
personal experiences, I will advice you, my fellow freshman, on certain a aspect of writing that you
may not have known prior to joining the college world, as well as offer some life advice.
To begin, in Anne Lammott s article Shitty First Drafts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Speaking from prior experience, I have never been one to openly allow someone else to revise my
work or even allow them to view it at all. I am quite a bit too shy for that. However, Lommet makes
some valid points. All throughout my life, I have gotten by on the basics of writing. I was unaware of
the amount of work that takes place in writing. Writing is much more than it seems to be. Simply
writing is not suffice in the understanding of the skillful process. I have come to realization that
writing is just as critical as assembling a car. In the same sense, building a car is about precision and
piecing many parts together for the overall outcome of a successful, running automobile. Even then,
there may be room for improvements down the line, but in the meantime it is good to produce the best
work possible. Writing can be just as critical because it involves a vast variety of things as well. There
is more to take into account than simply typing or jotting down words. Writing involves grammar,
spelling, punctuation, intended audience, etc... These things of which can become quite confusing,
attempting to make them all flow in a smooth,

The Revolt Of The Cockroach People
Mexican Americans in Texas have a long and detailed history spanning from the arrival of Cortez all
the way to the present day. Through historical events, the culture and identity of Mexican Americans
have shifted, diverted, and adapted into what people chose to identify as. The rise of the Chicano
identity during the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement was an adaptation as a culture to
oppressive and unjust treatment from white, Anglos that had almost all political and social power over
all minorities. To stop the oppressive voices from silencing and oppressing the Mexican Americans,
they had to stand up to fight for their rights as American citizens that also had Mexican or Spanish
heritage to be proud of. In Oscar Zeta Acosta s novel, The Revolt of the Cockroach People, he dives
into the Chicano Movement as a witness and an active participant. His larger than life character is on
the front lines of the movement and examines the shift in identity among the group. It was particularly
rising of their Chicano identity that gave the people cause to organize politically and socially in order
to fight for a worthy cause. One aspect of the Chicano identity that gave rise to the Chicano
Movement is the power of reviving gender roles. The revival of the traditional roles gave Chicano
men the desire to assert themselves as the dominate gender to conquer the past oppressions from
whites. Traditional roles for men in Anglo, Spanish, and Mexican cultures dictate the men as the

Football Concussions And Head Injuries
Football Concussions and Head Injuries
Football is one of the most popular sports played today, but, many injuries can occur while playing
football. Some of these injuries may include broken bones, spinal injuries and concussions. High
school football accounts for forty seven percent of all reported sports
concussions(headcasecompany.com). A concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury
(MTBI), is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head or body.
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative disease of the brain and is associated with
repeated head traumas like concussions (CNN.com). Brain injuries cause more deaths in sports than
any other injury. If we want to continue the sport of football in our youth and young teens, we need to
have ways to prevent head injuries. Some ways of preventing head injuries would be different helmet
designs, better tackling techniques or less contact time in practices.
The Strib piece, is about Wally Hilgenberg, the former Minnesota Vikings linebacker who died in
2008 at age 66. He had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but a brain analysis
after his death has led a group of Boston scientists to conclude his symptoms were more likely the
result of repeated trauma to his head (Kaszuba).

Archetypes In Kingsolver s The Bean Trees
Because flowers go in cycles of life and death, we can look to them as archetypes. The cycle is really
closely related to the circle which is a very prominent archetype in the world today and the past. The
other thing I think of when I hear the word flowers is gardens. When I looked for the garden archetype
I found that gardens symbolize love and fertility (YourDictionary 2). Flowers and gardens also have
many symbols associated with them depending on who you ask.
Missy and her mother are shelling peas together talking about Missy getting a job (Kingsolver 5). This
section reminds me of when I shelled peas with grandma. There aren t any bean plant specific
archetypes but the color green symbolizes earth and growth (YourDictionary 3). Shelling beans can
constitute a change. In the book The Bean Trees this means that Missy is likely going to come out of
her shell and show who she really is. This foreshadows a little about how likely she is going to start a
life of her own and leave. This use of the symbol really adds to the story because it shows a growth of
the main character early on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When I think of the marigold I think of the time when I was a child and I loved to see marigolds. They
remind me of grandma s house and the beauty of the garden. When I looked it up I found that the
marigold is the flower that is most associated with the desire for riches (Month 2). By the end of the
book Missy is still interested in riches, but it s different than we would expect. Missy is interested in
the riches of knowing and raising a child who she loves and cares for. This adds depth to the story
because there is a drastic difference between the beginning riches and the riches at the end of this

Cancer and Soy Protein Essay example
Soy has been greatly exaggerated as the answer to all our problems for years. Soy, in and of itself, is
toxic to the human body unless cooked thoroughly and properly. There are several side affects of soy
consumption, but the one I will be discussing is cancer. The miracle cure for cancer is said to be soy
protein and isoflavone supplements. Cancer rates are at an all time high, and the disease is the second
leading cause of mortality in the United States. The idea that soy could save lives sounds amazing but,
unfortunately, that is not the case.
Lots of studies prove that soy protein (or isoflavones) is conflicting or unproductive, but only a few
show that it might prevent cancer. Even some affirm that it can contribute to or ... Show more content

This puts consumers at a greater risk for many health problems, including cancer. The soy industry
says that soy has a long list of evidence in the prevention and healing of gastrointestinal cancers. The
fact that soy protein is linked with a lowered risk of stomach cancer but a higher risk of death from
colorectal cancer was made known by the most remarkable study to come along in recent years. Little
or no association is shown by most epidemiological studies. Those from the allium family like onions
and garlic and yellow and green vegetables seem to be the most hopeful foods for cancer defense.
Other foods have been found protective like eggplant, tomatoes, poultry, celery, tea, milk, fish, and
snap beans. Soy is not the only dietary savior. The studies fail to sustain Solae Company s petition for
a health claim for soy protein, but give good support for the FDA s endorsement of fruits and veggies
as a way to prevent cancer. Foods that are pickled, smoked and fried, vegetable cooking oils,
processed meats, high salt dishes, and fermented beans mainly labeled soy miso are often associated
with stomach and colon cancers. Things that have also been implicated are smoking, alcohol, noodles,
bread and other starchy carbohydrates, speed eating, and binge eating. It is not shocking that miso and
other fermented soybean products are associated to gastrointestinal cancers

How Did Copernicus Create A Paradigm Shift To A...
This paper analyzes the veracity of the fairly commonplace belief that Nicolaus Copernicus produced
a paradigm shift in the field of astronomy from the geocentric Ptolemaic model to his own heliocentric
model that resembles what contemporary astronomy deems as true. The starting point is the analysis
of the work put forth by Copernicus in contrast to his Ptolemaic predecessors and his heliocentric
successors. The framework for this analysis is the one suggested by Thomas Kuhn in his description
of a paradigm shift in the context of scientific development. The paper concludes that Copernicus
deserves a lot of credit for initiating the heliocentric paradigm shift, similar to the widespread
sentiment that his work revolutionized astronomy and produced a paradigm shift to a heliocentric
model, but not quite the same. His work retains a large number of elements from the Ptolemaic system
which prevented it from being a clear shift, but he does indeed challenge the geocentric and
geostationary (that the earth is at rest) assumptions in a move that threatens the core of the Ptolemaic
system. Nonetheless, his work did little more than argue from a position with weak ... Show more

Kuhn himself used the term rather loosely in his landmark book The Structure of Scientific
Revolutions , referring to either the laws and principles that govern scientific inquiry within a specific
field or just a collection of landmark works showcasing a common body of beliefs. Although one
could consider arguing that the Copernican revolution (but definitely not Copernicus himself) started
the shift away from deriving scientific knowledge from scripture and thus he started a paradigm shift
in the former sense, those implications are fairly removed from Copernicus himself. As such, arguing
whether he initiated a paradigm shift in the latter sense is a more meaningful

Industrial Sectors Of Northern Ireland And The Republic Of...
An instrument in which governments use as a method to intervene in international trade and
investment as mentioned earlier are tariffs. A tariff is a form of tax established on foreign goods and
services, which are imported. Tariffs are generally used to restrict international trade, as they increase
the price of imported goods and services which as a result, makes those commodities more expensive
to consumers. Also, a tariff can be exactly like a quota, which will be discussed later, if, permitting the
same import volume, the domestic output and prices are identical under the alternative trade policies
(Fung, 1989). By restricting trade of imported foreign goods and services through tariffs but
increasing the costs, it provides protection to domestic producers against the foreign competitors. As
seen from the experience from the Irish case study of a comparison between the industrial sectors of
Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to examine the effects of protection on industries
specialization and trade, tariffs can play a major part in an industry s and its surrounding industries
performance (McAleese, 1977). Governments employ the use of tariffs for many reasons; firstly, they
could be protecting domestic employment because as the competition of imported goods that threaten
domestic industries increase, it could cause these domestic firms to fire workers or even shift
production abroad to cut costs to stay competitive. Governments can also apply a

Slavery And Colonial Rule During Colonialism
Slavery and Colonial Rule
During the years of European colonialism in Africa, slavery was used as the main source of labor for
various colonial projects. Slaves worked on various levels of service to the colonial powers, especially
the French. These include working on plantations and military service. Even though the French and
the British were profiting from the labor and oppression of Africans, they soon faced opposition for
their use of slavery as a tool for economic gain. In this essay, I will explain these elements of slavery
in colonial rule, by detailing information from Martin Klein s Slavery and Colonial Rule in French
West Africa, and Trevor Getz s Slavery and Reform in West Africa. Klein discusses the status of the
slave and the history of mistreatment by Europeans. He focuses on the time when the Portuguese came
to Senegambia during the 1600s. It was during this time that slave labor was being used to feed the
courts of coastal kings as it was used in the medieval empires of the interior. These slaves were enemy
combatants, who were captured and sentenced to work as punishment. The author mentioned that
slaves during this period did not have rights or an official identity. Many of them faced many forms of
persecution and mistreatment. By the time the French had take over, slaves were to be punished by
having the master make them sleep in irons, but if they accepted their status, their condition was
ameliorated. As time passed, and as other markets became

1. The world within which Winston lives is replete with contradictions. For example a, major tenet of
the Party s philosophy is that War is Peace. Similarly, the Ministry of Love serves as, what we would
consider, a department of war. What role do these contradictions serve on a grand scale? Discuss other
contradictions inherent in the Party s philosophy. What role does contradiction serve within the
framework of Doublethink? How does Doublethink satisfy the needs of The Party?

13. How would you describe the author s tone in 1984? Does it add to or detract from the character s
discourse?
14. Discuss the role of sex and intimacy in 1984. What specific function does the Party s directive on
sexual interaction serve?
15. In the final analysis, how accurate was Orwell in his vision of the future? In what ways does our
contemporary society compare to his idea of society in 1984? Are there examples in which he was
correct? What is most opposite? Do you see a potential for aspects of Orwell s vision to come true?
16. During his final encounter with O Brien, Winston argues that, if all else fails, the inherent nature of
the individual the spirit of man is strong enough to undermine a society such as that created by The
Party. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Is Winston s belief applicable to the world we
live in today? Can you cite examples in our own recent history that support or dismiss Winston s
belief in the resiliency and righteousness of the human spirit?

1000 To 1750 Christianity Analysis
Between 1000 1750, Christianity maintained authority over the people due to religious and political
power, thereby greatly influencing art and education, however exposure to new knowledge from the
Islamic world led to changes in the way the church was perceived and depicted in Western Europe.
At the beginning of the period during the Medieval Times, the Catholic Church had power and
influence over everyone s lives. The church built up its power over the years through superstition and
engraining in people s minds that the only way to heaven was through church. People believed this
because they were not exposed to any other formal education and anyone that spoke against the
church was subject to heretics. Toward the end of the period, after

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Incorporated Circuits
ADVANTAGES OF VLSI
While we will focus on coordinated circuits in this book, the properties of incorporated circuits what
we can and can t proficiently put in an incorporated circuit to a great extent decide the design of the
whole framework. Incorporated circuits enhance framework qualities in a few basic ways. ICs have
three key points of interest over computerized circuits worked from discrete parts:
Size. Incorporated circuits are significantly littler the two transistors and wires are contracted to
micrometer sizes, contrasted with the millimeter or centimeter sizes of discrete segments. Little size
prompts focal points in speed and power utilization, since littler parts have littler parasitic resistances,
capacitances, and inductances. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Diminutiveness is frequently leverage in itself consider versatile TVs or handheld cell phones.
Lower control utilization. Supplanting a modest bunch of standard parts with a solitary chip
diminishes add up to control utilization. Decreasing force utilization has an expansive influence on
whatever remains of the framework: a littler, less expensive power supply can be utilized; since less
power utilization implies less warmth, a fan may never again be essential; a more straightforward
bureau with less protecting for electromagnetic protecting might be possible, as well.
Reduced cost. Decreasing the quantity of parts, the power supply prerequisites, bureau expenses, et
cetera, will definitely diminish framework cost. The gradually expanding influence of combination is
to such an extent that the cost of a framework worked from custom ICs can be less, despite the fact
that the individual ICs cost more than the standard parts they supplant. Understanding why
coordinated circuit innovation has such significant impact on the outline of advanced frameworks
requires understanding both the innovation of IC fabricating and the financial aspects of ICs and
computerized frameworks.

Night By Elie Wiesel Tabula Rasa Quotes
Tabula Rasa is the epistemological belief that people are born as a clean slate. Therefore, all
knowledge one has, is acquired. This includes the decision of right or wrong. If one is raised correctly
and decides to make the right choices in life, they should have privileges. It is possible for human
rights to be actualized for every person willing to live by them. First, criminals or people who hurt
others on purpose shouldn t expect to receive human rights. In the novel, Night by Elie Wiesel, the
author retells stories of when he was a victim of the holocaust. In this book, he tells a story of a Jewish
woman screaming that she saw a fire whilst on a train to the concentration camps. The other
passengers were getting annoyed, so they tried to stop the woman. ... Show more content on

Look at the flames! Flames everywhere.... Once again, the young men bound and gagged her. When
they actually struck her, people shouted their approval...she received several blows to the head, blows
that could have been lethal (Wiesel 26). This passage recalls the account of how a group of men
harmed a woman of their own community. These men shouldn t expect to receive human rights after
they harmed a poor woman that they thought was mentally ill. They took away her rights, therefore
the possibility of rights for them is out of the picture. In addition, to Elie s book, he also gave a
speech, Perils of Indifference, to express his views of indifference and how it affects our society. He
mentions, These failures have cast a dark shadow over humanity: two world wars, countless civil

The Theme Of Revenge In The Jungle Book
The Jungle Books is a series of classic stories written by famous author Rudyard Kipling. The stories
are separated into two books; The Jungle Book (1894) and The Second Jungle Book (1895) and were
first published in magazines in England in 1984 5. One may say the stories can be regarded as classic
stories told by an adult to children. They are fables where animals can talk and live in harmony
according to The Law of the Jungle . However, the stories are teaching moral lessons that are
inspirational for both adults and children. The stories contains powers that challenge The Law of the
Jungle and force the jungle animals to fight while Mowgli , the stories protagonist makes a self
discovery that changes him forever. This essay will discuss this self discovery with the theme of
revenge in the Mowgli stories in The Jungle Books.
In the children s book The Jungle Book one may see Shere Khan s character as a metaphor for
revenge. There are several noticeable facts that stress this statement. First of all, Shere Khan hates ...

One may say that revenge is a rather terrible thing. It is usually seen as something bad, but it may also
be beneficial depending on the situation and circumstances. On one hand, revenge could make one do
things that are not good. Shere Khan was breaking the rules in The Law of the Jungle and every
animal was afraid of him because of that. He was trying to kill Mowgli by doing everything that was
necessary and was therefore alone with nobody that cared for him. However, as we have learned by
Mowgli revenge may be beneficial for some. Mowgli saved all the jungle animals from Shere Khan by
killing him, which made the jungle once again in order. Mowgli made a self discovery that in fact he
was a human and was capable of doing good, rather than bad, as Shere Khan was trying to convince
the jungle animals that Mowgli some day in the future would

The Digitial Millenium Copyright Act Essay
The Digitial Millenium Copyright Act As current lawsuits unfold and the history of the Internet
progresses, the debate over the future of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act thrives. The Digital
Millennium Copyright Act, signed into law by President Clinton on October 28, 1998, was written in
an attempt to strike a balance between the rights of a work s creator to receive adequate compensation
and society s fundamental right to freedom of information. The bottom line is that the objective of the
Digital Millennium Copyright Act is to prohibit all Internet users from accessing copyrighted
materials on the Internet. The most renowned case where this is currently happening is A M Records,

The current court case and ensuing media battle are accomplishing little in the way of creating real
long term solutions to online piracy (Frankel 1). The only way to get to the core of the issue and really
understand the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is to get a little bit of a background on copyright
itself.
Almost three hundred years ago, England was the first country to formally establish the first copyright
laws in what they called, the Statute of Anne. The rationale behind establishing the world s first
copyright laws was supposedly to protect the rights of the consumer. The Statute of Anne was created
with the title of an act for the encouragement of learning, although works, such as books, were not
considered valuable pieces of art that should be protected. Instead, they were considered valuable
commodities to profit from. When the United States Constitution was first being written in 1787, our
founding fathers recognized that everyone would benefit if creative people were encouraged to create
new intellectual and artistic works. The framers of the Constitution admired the Statute of Anne and
took care to include a copyright clause (Article 1 Section 8) giving congress the power to promote the
progress of science and useful arts by passing laws that give creative artists (labeled authors in the
constitution) the exclusive

Essay on The Decline of Indentures Servitude
The decline of indentured servitude and the rise of chattel slavery were caused by economic factors of
the English settlers in the late 17th century. Colonists continually tried to allure laborers to the colony.
The head right system was to give the indentured servant a method of becoming independent after a
number of years of service. Colonists chiefly relied on Indentured Servitude, in order to facilitate their
need for labor. The decreasing population combined with a need for a labor force, led colonists to
believe that African slaves were the most efficient way to acquire a labor force that would satisfy their
needs.
Before the 1680 s, indentured servitude was the primary source of labor in the newly developed
colonies. There were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Africans were economically better, due to British control of the slave trade making black labor

In the 1600 s, tobacco became the main source of income for most of the colonists. The economic
prosperity of the colonies was primarily dependent on the amount of tobacco produced. The growing
of tobacco needed large amount of land, with a large stable work force. The increased demand for a
large, stable work force combined with the availability and low price of African slaves, led to the use
of slavery in the colonies. To the planter, slavery was the ideal form of labor that would be most
beneficial to productivity of his crop.#
The key factor to the shift to African chattel slavery was the revolt known as Bacon s Rebellion in
1676. Bacon was an English aristocrat who just came to Virginia Due to a disagreement with royal
governor William Berkeley, he gathered support from both white and black indentured servants and
began a series of revolts against the governor and the landowners. These revolts just added to the
preference for black labor and slavery. Even though Bacon died before anything could happen, the
threat of such a biracial alliance challenging the power of the master class prompted the colony s elite
to switch to an enslaved black labor force. The demand for black slaves rose and this caused an
increase of Africans into the colonies. By the 1700 s, slavery was deep rooted in the colonies
government.#

Exploring the Boundaries between Alternative Medicine and...
Alternative medicine has been considered the hidden mainstream of patient care in America. As
biomedicine increased in popularity, alternative methods of healing arose as a response to the
treatments used by physicians. Historically, alternative (or complementary ) medicine conveyed itself
by highlighting its natural attributes. These characteristics attracted those who were wary of the
chemicals used in allopathic medicines. Much of the skepticism that has accompanied complementary
alternative medicine (CAM) stems from the lack of scientifically based evidence that shows its
efficacy; there is no alternative medicine there is simply unproven medicine (Fontanarosa and
Lundberg 1618). This argument suggests that medicine and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The founder of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann, was originally an MD who regularly practiced
biomedicine in the late 1700s (Whorton 49). Homeopathic ideology involves treating a disease with
cures that produce similar effects as the disease ( same suffering ) as opposed to treating a disease with
substances that are meant to produce opposite effects ( allopathy ) (Whorton 52). As Hahnemann
progressed in his practice as a physician, he began to lose trust in the worth of the treatments he
provided treatments he had been taught would be effective for their target disease. He claimed that
medicine was founded upon perhapses and blind chance and were not tailored to cure the diseases of
individual patients; medicine saw disease as something finite and similarly experienced across patients
with similar illnesses (Whorton 56). Hahnemann believed that conventional medicine is objective and
independent of a patient s perspective of his or her own disease; it is an impersonal approach to
personal problems. For example, a headache could mean something different to separate individuals
because each of them may experience it differently. Consequently, he made his homeopathic remedies
specific to his patients (Whorton 57).
Since the dilutions of homeopathic remedies reached nearly infinitesimal quantities of an actual drug,
many homeopaths believed that some sort of spirit was an

The Horrors Of The War II
Until The End Even in our darkest hour, never despair, the light will come sooner than expected. It
was December 23rd , 1943, and there they were, sitting in a ghost town that was once the fine city of
Rostock. The soldiers were waiting patiently in the bombed out, abandoned airplane factory that still
looked like a war zone. The area was littered with skeletons of World War II jets and engines that once
fueled Hitler s Wehrmacht and mighty blitzkriegs that helped him conquer most of Europe in its hey
day. Hitler s army went through Europe decimating buildings and works of art that had great historical
value. The Nazi soldiers gave no thought to what they were doing, but only wishing to please the
Furor. The bones of these mighty planes looked as sorrowful as the men were now feeling. The putrid
smell of dead bodies and spent casings hung heavy in their nostrils. The entire company was chilled to
the bone by the hard sleet and snow that had been pelting them relentlessly for the past15 hours. They
were in the northeastern corner of Germany, nestled between the mighty Warnow River and the harsh
Baltic Sea in a city that once was bustling and thriving before the allies invaded through Demark and
Sweden and the red Russians barreled through Poland. The men were glad it was almost empty,
lending a sense of peaceful serenity that almost had a way of making them feel safe. It was so quiet;
almost too quiet. Gunnery Sergeant Ronald L. Carter, a tall, athletic, blonde

Natural gas is a cheaper option and also environmentally, a better option because it is classified as a

money over time. Size is one thing you need to consider when buying an outdoor grill. How big is
your patio or deck where the grill is gonna go? Also, are you the average griller, cooking mostly

Exegesis on Exodus 20
Bible Exegesis: Exodus 20
Prior to beginning this assignment, I had already found a passionate interest in theology, primarily the
logical historical analysis of the Old Testament. I had read several books on the topic, but still had a
thirst for more knowledge. With that said, my preceding assumptions predominantly consisted of
skepticism towards the religious interpretation of the Old Testament. I believed that Exodus 20 was a
prime example of the religious establishment interpreting an ancient text as to be divine. I felt that the
Ten Commandments were nothing more then a moral code of antiquity, established as an ethical
compass by spiritual leaders in a religious society. Exodus 20 is a hot button topic in today s polarized

Exodus 20 begins by stating that this is the word of god, or Elohim. Verse two continues this assertion
by proclaiming, I am YHWH thy God, who have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the
house of bondage (Darby Translation Bible Exod 20:2). This statement immediately grabs the reader s
attention and imposes his authority as the savior of the Israelites who formed a covenant with his
chosen people that they shall obey only him. YHWH demands this authority in Exodus 20:3 when he
says, Thou shalt have no other gods before me. However, The Jerusalem Bible provides a more telling
interpretation of Exodus 20:3, There shall be no strange god for you before my face. This suggests that
the acknowledgement of other gods is accepted, as long as YHWH is the only god worshiped. As
Karen Alexander Explains, To ignore a potential source of (divine intervention) seemed frankly
foolhardy, and the subsequent history of the Israelites shows that they were very reluctant to neglect
the cult of the other gods (23).
During antiquity, it was widely assumed that gods only controlled specified territories or earthly tasks.
So, as people would travel outside the territory of one god, they would begin worship of another. This
fundamental belief originates from the ancient Babylonian myth of the Enuma Elish. In this story of
creation, gods emerge from primordial

Twelfth Night Mistaken Identity Essay
Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare should be considered a comedy because it fulfills all the
elements of comedy, specifically puns and mistaken identity. Twelfth Night is a play about twins who
are shipwrecked and separated. One of the twins, Viola, disguises herself as a man so she can work in
Duke Orsino s court. She quickly befriends him and is sent to woo Countess Olivia, the object of
Orsino s affection. Much to her dismay, Viola falls in love with the Duke and Olivia falls in love with
her disguised, masculine self. This hilarious play is a shakespearean comedy because it is composed of
five elements: puns, complex plots, mistaken identity, happy endings, and insults. Puns are a play on

Typical in other shakespearean comedies, Twelfth Night immediately uses mistaken identity when
Viola disguises herself as a man. But the most hysterical example of mistaken identity in Twelfth
Night is Malvolio´s love letter. Malvolio is a pompous steward of Olivia who the other servants do not
like. After being scolded by him, Maria, along with Sir Toby and another servant play a trick on
Malvolio. Since Malvolio is secretly in love with Olivia, Maria forges a letter declaring her love for
him in Olivia s penmanship. This leads Malvolio to believe Olivia loves him back. The letter asks
Malvolio to show he loves her back by ¨let it appear in thy smiling¨ (Shakespeare). Now whenever
Malvolio is in Olivia´s presence, he vows to smile. This is hilarious because Olivia is still mourning
her brother´s death whilst he stands around her, smiling like an idiot. Maria pretended to be Olivia and
now Malvolio looks like a fool. Her mistaken identity generates humor in the manner that Malvolio is
humbled from his condescending position. Shakespeare s use of mistaken identity and puns makes

mind as she becomes increasingly paranoid.
Antoinette s arranged marriage begins to distresses her, as she is married to a controlling white
Englishman who feels alienated were she feels at home. Indeed, their marriage is a mismatch of
culture and custom. Anoinette and her husband, Mr. Rochester, fail to relate to one another or comfort
each other when Antoinette needs it the most. His unsympathetic feelings intensify her condition and
even push her to fits of violence. An exile within her own family, a quot;white cockroach quot; to her
disdainful servants, and an oddity in the eyes of her own husband, Antoinette cannot find a peaceful
place for herself. Now she seeks refuge of the cruel world by surrounding herself in nature s fold.
Antoinette is fascinated with nature, which becomes a central character, and perhaps her only friend.

Freedom Of Religion Is The First Amendment In The Bill Of...
Freedom of religion or freedom of belief is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or
community, in public or private, to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and
observance. It also includes the freedom to change one s religion or belief. Freedom of religion is
considered an essential human right. In a country with an established religion, freedom of religion
generally means that the government allows religious practices besides the established religion, and
does not persecute you if you are not that religion. Freedom of Religion is the First Amendment in the
Bill of Rights. It allows us to think and express what we believe. But, around the world and in the
United States, this freedom is eroding. Churches, religious organizations, and individuals face more
and more restrictions as they express their beliefs or serve in society. Religious freedom is important
to a diverse society or community. It allows different faiths and beliefs to grow and spread. Religious
freedom protects the rights of all individuals, whether they are religious or not. Religion has an

Double Effect
The objective of this paper is to prove that the Doctrine of Double Effect (DDE), proposed by Saint
Thomas Aquinas, is a valid moral principle. It has been concluded that the DDE is a valid moral
principle as it allows one to justify whether an action will cause two diverse effects and whether the
effects are permissible. It is crucial to establish the validity of the DDE because it has been applied to
defend a significant number of contemporary controversial issues (McIntyre). In order to determine
whether the DDE is a valid moral principle, the definition of the doctrine itself as well as conditions
involved will be demonstrated. In addition, each condition will be applied to differentiate two
examples that result in the same outcomes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The doctor was aware that his choice would result in the death of one patient. However, the death of
one patient compared to five was able to justify that action. Therefore, the doctors choice of dividing
medication into four equal proportions to save the lives of four out of five patients is able to satisfy all
the conditions of DDE and therefore it is permissible for the doctor to make such a decision.
The doctor s choice in the Organ Shortage scenario is impermissible. From a quantitative point of
view, it may seem the doctor s choice is permissible as it resulted in the death of one patient as
opposed to four. However, the death of the patient is not a side effect of curing the four other patients.
Moreover, the death of the fifth patient has been used as a means to achieve the good end. The doctor
s choice fails to meet the conditions of DDE as the doctor withheld medication from a patient whose
life depended on the medication. Therefore, it has been concluded that the doctor s choice is
impermissible.
The above scenarios may seem identical as the doctor made the decision that was able to save the
greatest number of people. However, it has been identified that the circumstances were different and

Persepolis Literary Analysis
In the graphic novel, Persepolis , Marjane Satrapi brings to light the devastations in her life in Tehran
during the Iranian revolution of 1973 as well as the eight year war with Iraq. Forced upon Marji was a
life surrounded by Middle Eastern conflicts and policies that became unavoidable. Iran had strict
government policies, military forces, and radicalists that punished those that protested against Iran s

from innocent point of view during Satrapi s life, the pain and violence expressed throughout the
novel is based on the suffering that occurred in Iran. Among those who suffered during this time are

The Cove Dolphins
Approximately 20,000 dolphins are killed legally every year and thousands more are sold inhumanely
in Taiji, Japan. The majority of these dolphins are sold to marine parks and aquariums around the
world. Louie Psihoyos and Ric O Barry s eye opening documentary The Cove raises awareness about
the gruesome killings of dolphins in Japan. Ironically Ric O Barry feels that he initiated this problem,
as he was one of the first dolphin trainers/capturers in the 1960 s for the show Flipper. After
witnessing the star, Flipper the Bottlenose Dolphin commit suicide in his arms, he became a marine
activist, which led to the production of this documentary to stop the problem he created. Louie and

The universal image of the dolphin portrays the illusion that dolphins are always happy because they
consistently appear to be smiling. This, however, is nature s greatest deception as it is simply the
shape of their mouth. Throughout the film the juxtaposition of the beauty of nature is harshly
contrasted with the ugliness of the underlying secrets of the industry in Japan and around the world.
The fishing industry is largest in Japan therefore that is where this movie was filmed. The captive
industry has become a lucrative billion dollar worldwide trade, with all money made from the
exploitation, imprisonment and lifelong suffering of these living beings. A live dolphin captured for a
marine mammal park can be valued up to $200,000. The most shocking fact is that this is legal. The
International Whaling Commission outlawed commercial whaling in 1986, but dolphin hunts remain
legal. The film s impact was largely due to the emotional ties between O Barry and dolphins. Although
the filmmakers are extremely biased, his convincing pleads for our help are strategically made at the
most emotional moments. He believes that bottlenose dolphins are being hunted the most The
fishermen are searching for bottlenose dolphins like flipper . Luckily this type of dolphin is not yet

The Horror Of A Horror Movie And Me
A few months ago, I brought a horror film to life. The only difference between the main character of a
horror movie and me is, the main character can run. Looking at the real world through the dream
world seems impossible, but sleep paralysis can do that and so much more. The most terrifying night
of my life started as I was just falling asleep. I could feel my body giving in to the night and my
eyelids becoming heavy, however they maintained open against my will. To maybe shake myself out
of it, I tried to force myself to sit up; seeing how my legs did not respond to my brains request, I
attempted to try a simpler task, like moving my fingers. Nothing was happening, not a muscle would
budge. I wanted to yell for help but my mouth was glued shut and my vocal chords had failed me. In
less than a second I lost all control over my physical self. For all I had known, I had become a
vegetable for the rest of my life. My heart was sinking. As if things were not already horrible enough,
I began to feel an evil presence in my bedroom. When I looked up, standing directly in front of me
was a girl who was staring at me so intensely, it was as if she was burning holes through me. I quickly
recognized that she was no one other than myself. Everything about her was like me, even the way her
lips curved slightly downward. Her posture and demeanor, however, made her look like she was

Charles Darwin Natural Selection
From the beginning of Charles Darwin s writing of the Natural Selection; or The Survival of the
Fittest, as edited by Joseph Pendleton, we find that he feels that nothing holds a light to as genius as
the works of natural selection when he verbalized, Can we wonder, then, that nature s productions
should be far truer in character than man s productions; that they should be infinitely better adapted to
the most complex conditions of life..., (Darwin 42). Being more of a verbal expression than a
question, Darwin clearly feels that in comparison to natural selection, the breeder (man) selection,
which he also speaks of in his literature, does not stand a chance. By giving examples, Darwin shows
that natural selection can make something transpire ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

  • 2. Consumerism And The Conformity Of Consumer Culture The dominance of capitalist countries has facilitated the conformity of global civilization and cultural environments resulting in an increase of consumer cultures (Sarmela, 1977; Chaney, 2004). As capitalism experiences a natural and unavoidable expansion, consumers engage with consumer culture creating invisible products such as social status, identity, cultures, and ethical relationships (Sternberg, 2017). There are two sides to consumer culture that are the values held by society; those who conform and those who rebel (Turow McAllister, 2014). All participants of society align with either submission or resistance to dominant ideas, values, and social structures. However, as a result of continued progressive diversity and fragmentation, the distinction between submissive and resistance are blurred. Nevertheless, those who resist and rebel are still participants of consumer culture. Instead they instead form sub cultures in society with alternative beliefs, values and ideas that challenge the mainstream (Chaney, 2004). In order to better understand the relationship between consumption practice and the resistance of consumer culture, theories of reflexive project of self, prosumers, lifestyle commodification, and incorporation will be analyzed in relation to the vegan movement. Prominent media scholar, John Fiske (1989), theorized numerous ways in which the consumption of media and prevalent culture, even shopping itself, could be conceptualized as acts of resistance. Resistance can be defined as the ways in which a subcultural style and activity works to challenge the dominant social order (Southerton, 2011). Veganism is becoming an increasingly popular lifestyle choice for health and environmental conscious individuals and is viewed as a form of resistance to mainstream consumption practices. The consumer develops their identity as someone who does not use animal derived food or products of any kind such as; dairy, eggs, fur, leather, feathers, or any goods involving animal testing (Lawrence, 1993). Veganism is an extended form of vegetarianism, and though the term was defined in 1944, the concept of a plant based diet can be traced back to ancient Indian and Eastern Mediterranean societies (Suddath, ... • 3. Shitty First Drafts By Anne Lammott Analysis Writing is something we have been used to since childhood. Beginning to write with just a few words and activities to improve our pendmanship. From easy sentences we all gradually improve our writing, as expected from higher levels of education. However, throughout all this time, many of us have been writing blind. Only writing what is seen an necessary, oblivious to the true skill and precision it takes to actually write quality work. Through the use of Anne Lammott s article Shitty First Drafts and personal experiences, I will advice you, my fellow freshman, on certain a aspect of writing that you may not have known prior to joining the college world, as well as offer some life advice. To begin, in Anne Lammott s article Shitty First Drafts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Speaking from prior experience, I have never been one to openly allow someone else to revise my work or even allow them to view it at all. I am quite a bit too shy for that. However, Lommet makes some valid points. All throughout my life, I have gotten by on the basics of writing. I was unaware of the amount of work that takes place in writing. Writing is much more than it seems to be. Simply writing is not suffice in the understanding of the skillful process. I have come to realization that writing is just as critical as assembling a car. In the same sense, building a car is about precision and piecing many parts together for the overall outcome of a successful, running automobile. Even then, there may be room for improvements down the line, but in the meantime it is good to produce the best work possible. Writing can be just as critical because it involves a vast variety of things as well. There is more to take into account than simply typing or jotting down words. Writing involves grammar, spelling, punctuation, intended audience, etc... These things of which can become quite confusing, attempting to make them all flow in a smooth, ... • 4. The Revolt Of The Cockroach People Mexican Americans in Texas have a long and detailed history spanning from the arrival of Cortez all the way to the present day. Through historical events, the culture and identity of Mexican Americans have shifted, diverted, and adapted into what people chose to identify as. The rise of the Chicano identity during the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement was an adaptation as a culture to oppressive and unjust treatment from white, Anglos that had almost all political and social power over all minorities. To stop the oppressive voices from silencing and oppressing the Mexican Americans, they had to stand up to fight for their rights as American citizens that also had Mexican or Spanish heritage to be proud of. In Oscar Zeta Acosta s novel, The Revolt of the Cockroach People, he dives into the Chicano Movement as a witness and an active participant. His larger than life character is on the front lines of the movement and examines the shift in identity among the group. It was particularly rising of their Chicano identity that gave the people cause to organize politically and socially in order to fight for a worthy cause. One aspect of the Chicano identity that gave rise to the Chicano Movement is the power of reviving gender roles. The revival of the traditional roles gave Chicano men the desire to assert themselves as the dominate gender to conquer the past oppressions from whites. Traditional roles for men in Anglo, Spanish, and Mexican cultures dictate the men as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Football Concussions And Head Injuries Football Concussions and Head Injuries Football is one of the most popular sports played today, but, many injuries can occur while playing football. Some of these injuries may include broken bones, spinal injuries and concussions. High school football accounts for forty seven percent of all reported sports concussions(headcasecompany.com). A concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head or body. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative disease of the brain and is associated with repeated head traumas like concussions (CNN.com). Brain injuries cause more deaths in sports than any other injury. If we want to continue the sport of football in our youth and young teens, we need to have ways to prevent head injuries. Some ways of preventing head injuries would be different helmet designs, better tackling techniques or less contact time in practices. The Strib piece, is about Wally Hilgenberg, the former Minnesota Vikings linebacker who died in 2008 at age 66. He had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but a brain analysis after his death has led a group of Boston scientists to conclude his symptoms were more likely the result of repeated trauma to his head (Kaszuba). A New York Times article shows what life is now like for 34 year old Mitch White, who signed on as an offensive right tackle for several teams, but never played a regular season game ... • 7. Archetypes In Kingsolver s The Bean Trees Because flowers go in cycles of life and death, we can look to them as archetypes. The cycle is really closely related to the circle which is a very prominent archetype in the world today and the past. The other thing I think of when I hear the word flowers is gardens. When I looked for the garden archetype I found that gardens symbolize love and fertility (YourDictionary 2). Flowers and gardens also have many symbols associated with them depending on who you ask. Missy and her mother are shelling peas together talking about Missy getting a job (Kingsolver 5). This section reminds me of when I shelled peas with grandma. There aren t any bean plant specific archetypes but the color green symbolizes earth and growth (YourDictionary 3). Shelling beans can constitute a change. In the book The Bean Trees this means that Missy is likely going to come out of her shell and show who she really is. This foreshadows a little about how likely she is going to start a life of her own and leave. This use of the symbol really adds to the story because it shows a growth of the main character early on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When I think of the marigold I think of the time when I was a child and I loved to see marigolds. They remind me of grandma s house and the beauty of the garden. When I looked it up I found that the marigold is the flower that is most associated with the desire for riches (Month 2). By the end of the book Missy is still interested in riches, but it s different than we would expect. Missy is interested in the riches of knowing and raising a child who she loves and cares for. This adds depth to the story because there is a drastic difference between the beginning riches and the riches at the end of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Cancer and Soy Protein Essay example Soy has been greatly exaggerated as the answer to all our problems for years. Soy, in and of itself, is toxic to the human body unless cooked thoroughly and properly. There are several side affects of soy consumption, but the one I will be discussing is cancer. The miracle cure for cancer is said to be soy protein and isoflavone supplements. Cancer rates are at an all time high, and the disease is the second leading cause of mortality in the United States. The idea that soy could save lives sounds amazing but, unfortunately, that is not the case. Lots of studies prove that soy protein (or isoflavones) is conflicting or unproductive, but only a few show that it might prevent cancer. Even some affirm that it can contribute to or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This puts consumers at a greater risk for many health problems, including cancer. The soy industry says that soy has a long list of evidence in the prevention and healing of gastrointestinal cancers. The fact that soy protein is linked with a lowered risk of stomach cancer but a higher risk of death from colorectal cancer was made known by the most remarkable study to come along in recent years. Little or no association is shown by most epidemiological studies. Those from the allium family like onions and garlic and yellow and green vegetables seem to be the most hopeful foods for cancer defense. Other foods have been found protective like eggplant, tomatoes, poultry, celery, tea, milk, fish, and snap beans. Soy is not the only dietary savior. The studies fail to sustain Solae Company s petition for a health claim for soy protein, but give good support for the FDA s endorsement of fruits and veggies as a way to prevent cancer. Foods that are pickled, smoked and fried, vegetable cooking oils, processed meats, high salt dishes, and fermented beans mainly labeled soy miso are often associated with stomach and colon cancers. Things that have also been implicated are smoking, alcohol, noodles, bread and other starchy carbohydrates, speed eating, and binge eating. It is not shocking that miso and other fermented soybean products are associated to gastrointestinal cancers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. How Did Copernicus Create A Paradigm Shift To A... This paper analyzes the veracity of the fairly commonplace belief that Nicolaus Copernicus produced a paradigm shift in the field of astronomy from the geocentric Ptolemaic model to his own heliocentric model that resembles what contemporary astronomy deems as true. The starting point is the analysis of the work put forth by Copernicus in contrast to his Ptolemaic predecessors and his heliocentric successors. The framework for this analysis is the one suggested by Thomas Kuhn in his description of a paradigm shift in the context of scientific development. The paper concludes that Copernicus deserves a lot of credit for initiating the heliocentric paradigm shift, similar to the widespread sentiment that his work revolutionized astronomy and produced a paradigm shift to a heliocentric model, but not quite the same. His work retains a large number of elements from the Ptolemaic system which prevented it from being a clear shift, but he does indeed challenge the geocentric and geostationary (that the earth is at rest) assumptions in a move that threatens the core of the Ptolemaic system. Nonetheless, his work did little more than argue from a position with weak ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kuhn himself used the term rather loosely in his landmark book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions , referring to either the laws and principles that govern scientific inquiry within a specific field or just a collection of landmark works showcasing a common body of beliefs. Although one could consider arguing that the Copernican revolution (but definitely not Copernicus himself) started the shift away from deriving scientific knowledge from scripture and thus he started a paradigm shift in the former sense, those implications are fairly removed from Copernicus himself. As such, arguing whether he initiated a paradigm shift in the latter sense is a more meaningful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Industrial Sectors Of Northern Ireland And The Republic Of... An instrument in which governments use as a method to intervene in international trade and investment as mentioned earlier are tariffs. A tariff is a form of tax established on foreign goods and services, which are imported. Tariffs are generally used to restrict international trade, as they increase the price of imported goods and services which as a result, makes those commodities more expensive to consumers. Also, a tariff can be exactly like a quota, which will be discussed later, if, permitting the same import volume, the domestic output and prices are identical under the alternative trade policies (Fung, 1989). By restricting trade of imported foreign goods and services through tariffs but increasing the costs, it provides protection to domestic producers against the foreign competitors. As seen from the experience from the Irish case study of a comparison between the industrial sectors of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to examine the effects of protection on industries specialization and trade, tariffs can play a major part in an industry s and its surrounding industries performance (McAleese, 1977). Governments employ the use of tariffs for many reasons; firstly, they could be protecting domestic employment because as the competition of imported goods that threaten domestic industries increase, it could cause these domestic firms to fire workers or even shift production abroad to cut costs to stay competitive. Governments can also apply a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Slavery And Colonial Rule During Colonialism Slavery and Colonial Rule During the years of European colonialism in Africa, slavery was used as the main source of labor for various colonial projects. Slaves worked on various levels of service to the colonial powers, especially the French. These include working on plantations and military service. Even though the French and the British were profiting from the labor and oppression of Africans, they soon faced opposition for their use of slavery as a tool for economic gain. In this essay, I will explain these elements of slavery in colonial rule, by detailing information from Martin Klein s Slavery and Colonial Rule in French West Africa, and Trevor Getz s Slavery and Reform in West Africa. Klein discusses the status of the slave and the history of mistreatment by Europeans. He focuses on the time when the Portuguese came to Senegambia during the 1600s. It was during this time that slave labor was being used to feed the courts of coastal kings as it was used in the medieval empires of the interior. These slaves were enemy combatants, who were captured and sentenced to work as punishment. The author mentioned that slaves during this period did not have rights or an official identity. Many of them faced many forms of persecution and mistreatment. By the time the French had take over, slaves were to be punished by having the master make them sleep in irons, but if they accepted their status, their condition was ameliorated. At the beginning of the period during the Medieval Times, the Catholic Church had power and influence over everyone s lives. The church built up its power over the years through superstition and engraining in people s minds that the only way to heaven was through church. This includes the decision of right or wrong. If one is raised correctly and decides to make the right choices in life, they should have privileges. It is possible for human rights to be actualized for every person willing to live by them. First, criminals or people who hurt others on purpose shouldn t expect to receive human rights. In the novel, Night by Elie Wiesel, the author retells stories of when he was a victim of the holocaust. Almost three hundred years ago, England was the first country to formally establish the first copyright laws in what they called, the Statute of Anne. The rationale behind establishing the world s first copyright laws was supposedly to protect the rights of the consumer. The Statute of Anne was created with the title of an act for the encouragement of learning, although works, such as books, were not considered valuable pieces of art that should be protected. Colonists continually tried to allure laborers to the colony. The head right system was to give the indentured servant a method of becoming independent after a number of years of service. Colonists chiefly relied on Indentured Servitude, in order to facilitate their need for labor. The decreasing population combined with a need for a labor force, led colonists to believe that African slaves were the most efficient way to acquire a labor force that would satisfy their needs. The increased demand for a large, stable work force combined with the availability and low price of African slaves, led to the use of slavery in the colonies. To the planter, slavery was the ideal form of labor that would be most beneficial to productivity of his crop.# The key factor to the shift to African chattel slavery was the revolt known as Bacon s Rebellion in 1676. As biomedicine increased in popularity, alternative methods of healing arose as a response to the treatments used by physicians. Historically, alternative (or complementary ) medicine conveyed itself by highlighting its natural attributes. These characteristics attracted those who were wary of the chemicals used in allopathic medicines. Much of the skepticism that has accompanied complementary alternative medicine (CAM) stems from the lack of scientifically based evidence that shows its efficacy; there is no alternative medicine there is simply unproven medicine (Fontanarosa and Lundberg 1618). The founder of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann, was originally an MD who regularly practiced biomedicine in the late 1700s (Whorton 49). Homeopathic ideology involves treating a disease with cures that produce similar effects as the disease ( same suffering ) as opposed to treating a disease with substances that are meant to produce opposite effects ( allopathy ) (Whorton 52). As Hahnemann progressed in his practice as a physician, he began to lose trust in the worth of the treatments he provided treatments he had been taught would be effective for their target disease. He claimed that medicine was founded upon perhapses and blind chance and were not tailored to cure the diseases of individual patients; medicine saw disease as something finite and similarly experienced across patients with similar illnesses (Whorton 56). Hahnemann believed that conventional medicine is objective and independent of a patient s perspective of his or her own disease; it is an impersonal approach to personal problems. For example, a headache could mean something different to separate individuals because each of them may experience it differently. Consequently, he made his homeopathic remedies specific to his patients (Whorton 57). With that said, my preceding assumptions predominantly consisted of skepticism towards the religious interpretation of the Old Testament. I believed that Exodus 20 was a prime example of the religious establishment interpreting an ancient text as to be divine. Verse two continues this assertion by proclaiming, I am YHWH thy God, who have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage (Darby Translation Bible Exod 20:2). This statement immediately grabs the reader s attention and imposes his authority as the savior of the Israelites who formed a covenant with his chosen people that they shall obey only him. YHWH demands this authority in Exodus 20:3 when he says, Thou shalt have no other gods before me. However, The Jerusalem Bible provides a more telling interpretation of Exodus 20:3, There shall be no strange god for you before my face. This suggests that the acknowledgement of other gods is accepted, as long as YHWH is the only god worshiped. The doctor s choice in the Organ Shortage scenario is impermissible. Iran had strict government policies, military forces, and radicalists that punished those that protested against Iran s rejection of western influence. After Satrapi and her parents came back from vacation, her grandma informs them about their country being at war with Iraq. Because most of what is happening is seen from innocent point of view during Satrapi s life, the pain and violence expressed throughout the novel is based on the suffering that occurred in Iran. Among those who suffered during this time are the children, for they suffered the most out of all those that lived at that time. While children are often portrayed as innocent, the civil war has tainted the purity of their childhood innocence by forcing them to face the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She shows that even the innocence of children can be shattered through the violence and horrific actions of those around them. Not only that but this pain and suffering once experienced as children have also resonated in the adult lives of these children as well. Not only did such tragic events create physical, mental, and emotional trauma on the children s lives, but it also created future pains and sufferings that these children would soon have to encounter in their adult lives. The violence and attacks against those that chose to protest and resist the government in any way whether it be a comic, expressing opinions against the government, or rejecting clothing policies, could lead to an arrest and or a beating, amputation, and maybe death, which had more mental damage than anything ... • 36. The Cove Dolphins Approximately 20,000 dolphins are killed legally every year and thousands more are sold inhumanely in Taiji, Japan. The majority of these dolphins are sold to marine parks and aquariums around the world. Louie Psihoyos and Ric O Barry s eye opening documentary The Cove raises awareness about the gruesome killings of dolphins in Japan. Ironically Ric O Barry feels that he initiated this problem, as he was one of the first dolphin trainers/capturers in the 1960 s for the show Flipper. After witnessing the star, Flipper the Bottlenose Dolphin commit suicide in his arms, he became a marine activist, which led to the production of this documentary to stop the problem he created. Louie and Rick expose the plight of the dolphin, the potential ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The universal image of the dolphin portrays the illusion that dolphins are always happy because they consistently appear to be smiling. This, however, is nature s greatest deception as it is simply the shape of their mouth. Throughout the film the juxtaposition of the beauty of nature is harshly contrasted with the ugliness of the underlying secrets of the industry in Japan and around the world. The fishing industry is largest in Japan therefore that is where this movie was filmed. The captive industry has become a lucrative billion dollar worldwide trade, with all money made from the exploitation, imprisonment and lifelong suffering of these living beings. A live dolphin captured for a marine mammal park can be valued up to $200,000. The most shocking fact is that this is legal. The International Whaling Commission outlawed commercial whaling in 1986, but dolphin hunts remain legal. The film s impact was largely due to the emotional ties between O Barry and dolphins. Although the filmmakers are extremely biased, his convincing pleads for our help are strategically made at the most emotional moments. He believes that bottlenose dolphins are being hunted the most The fishermen are searching for bottlenose dolphins like flipper . Luckily this type of dolphin is not yet endangered but this ... • 37. The Horror Of A Horror Movie And Me A few months ago, I brought a horror film to life. The only difference between the main character of a horror movie and me is, the main character can run. Looking at the real world through the dream world seems impossible, but sleep paralysis can do that and so much more. The most terrifying night of my life started as I was just falling asleep. I could feel my body giving in to the night and my eyelids becoming heavy, however they maintained open against my will. To maybe shake myself out of it, I tried to force myself to sit up; seeing how my legs did not respond to my brains request, I attempted to try a simpler task, like moving my fingers. Nothing was happening, not a muscle would budge. I wanted to yell for help but my mouth was glued shut and my vocal chords had failed me. In less than a second I lost all control over my physical self. For all I had known, I had become a vegetable for the rest of my life. My heart was sinking. As if things were not already horrible enough, I began to feel an evil presence in my bedroom. When I looked up, standing directly in front of me was a girl who was staring at me so intensely, it was as if she was burning holes through me. I quickly recognized that she was no one other than myself. Everything about her was like me, even the way her lips curved slightly downward. Her posture and demeanor, however, made her look like she was demonized. Afraid for my life, I asked her multiple times if she was being possessed by some supernatural ... • 38. Charles Darwin Natural Selection From the beginning of Charles Darwin s writing of the Natural Selection; or The Survival of the Fittest, as edited by Joseph Pendleton, we find that he feels that nothing holds a light to as genius as the works of natural selection when he verbalized, Can we wonder, then, that nature s productions should be far truer in character than man s productions; that they should be infinitely better adapted to the most complex conditions of life..., (Darwin 42). Being more of a verbal expression than a question, Darwin clearly feels that in comparison to natural selection, the breeder (man) selection, which he also speaks of in his literature, does not stand a chance. By giving examples, Darwin shows that natural selection can make something transpire ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, Darwin goes further in his admiration of the involution of nature and the utilization of natural selection, but yet he still left room for a possible alternative, in completion of the above quote, by saying, and should plainly bear the stamp of far higher workmanship, to something possibly being more preponderant out there that could accomplish such a task (Darwin 42). By being inexact with his final verbal expression here, would leave the reader to compose their own opinion and interpretation of a possible higher power and creator. This carries over to the awesomeness of the creation and species of the dolphins. There are a range from 30 to 48 calculated different species of dolphins in the world (Types of Dolphins). Each and every form of species carry certain characteristics they apportion, but yet have many characteristics they carry within their own individuality. In homogeneous attribute to cows, dolphins have babies which are called calves, the females are called cows, and the males are called bulls. Yet in their own individuality, and consummately different from the cows we would see on land, dolphins swim in the ocean and live under the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
