- Today’s topic is about Project Bloopers & Blunders and besides talking about them, so strategies to avoid them. Transition: But first let’s define what we mean by bloopers and blunders

- Keep it simple Make it big Put it where people can see it Let people change it
- Most don’t have a background in graphics Handwriting varies Have outside observer tell you if it’s big enough (Story of sign for Fedex on front door – but so small they’re already out of the vehicle and at the front door)
- Integrate on a point of use – on piece of equipment Universal information goes in a public – well trafficked place Outline where things go – on a board Indicate the process flow on the floor – use tape
- Enable people to keep process information current Choose low-tech options like whiteboards and markers to make updates easily Create a simple change process so everyone can offer better Visual Management ideas
- Identify units and materials Inform people of the process status Instruct people on how a process works Show the ongoing plan
- Make it clear what’s in each container or area Don’t make people search for items Let people know at a glance where to find what they need Remove the need to open containers to check
- Create a visual display Place it near the people who need to see it Include only critical customer-focused information Make updates tools (mens, markers, erasers) available Incorporate short, regular “Huddles” around the board
- Post step-by-step instructions Indicate the area on the floor where equipment belongs Place arrows on the floor or walls to show the process flow Include pictures of parts, materials or equipment
- Show what’s in store for the process Let people know what they are responsible for Give them a way to update the plan
- Visual management should make it easy to answer the question, “What should be done here?” Is there a process? Is it being adhered to? Is it delivering value to the customer? Do we know what’s coming? If the answer is “no” to any of these – it’s time to revisit Visual Management

- What happens to a glass of ice water? What happens to a cup of coffee? Second law of thermodynamics – everything is moving from state of greater order to a state of greater disorder – ENTROPY – that’s what we’re up against Who has a garage that has no room for cars? Who has boxes from their last move they’ve never opened?
- Banqueting Project for a large hotel – this is the process that makes weddings possible. They need to move glasses, plates and cutlery to and from the dining hall – lots going on in those back rooms that you never see!
- A place for everything – (and, Tracy?) Everything in it’s place! Or – from my father, “don’t put it down, put it away.” Who has common drive, but can never find anything on it? – Working vs Archive Arrange items by frequency of use or location of use Dedicate a place for the necessary items in the work area
- Same Bangueting project – using photos with multi-cultural staff is key – Easy to see when something is out of place!
- Shine is just that – clean and shine In a manufacturing work area, it can mean painting equipment so that leaks and breaks are easily visible In office areas it can be a “clean desk” policy or it can translate to IT maintenance – keeping the system running, licenses up to date, etc. What’s key is that it’s not an annual activity – it should be a regular like a “Daily 5S” or before breaks etc.
- Big Problem – It’s just 3S – once a year (let’s do the garage!) Need “Standardize” to create the rules and the process - Daily logs(sign-offs date and time) Work instructions Show: Who is responsible? What goes Where? How often to sweep, clean organize What to do if things are not as expected
- Leadership has to back and commit to the 5S System – Enforcement is key Supervisors have to ensure 5S Standards are met Audit the area and give results/scores Publish the scores – Display the results Let areas compete with each other Reward and recognize ≈
