The way to teach and deploy Lean and Six Sigma is broken. Here is how to fix this situation by applying Deming principles.
Presented at the 2015 International Deming Research Seminar, Washington, DC on 24 March 2015.
A multitude of students, instructors and practitioners of current improvement (C.I.) methods like Lean and Six Sigma learn a fraction of what they need, ignore the best ways to apply it, and dismiss whatever they have not being taught.
For example, some companies will “only do Lean” while others “will only do Six Sigma”.
This partial understanding of the C.I. methods is the natural result of fractioning a body of knowledge and the inward focus of the keepers of each method.
Thus, it is common to find a Six Sigma black belt who ignores the notion of the company as a system and a Lean practitioner who is not schooled in statistical analysis of any kind. Both miss on much useful knowledge which would make their efforts far more effective.
Worse still, managers and leaders unaware of Deming principles, launch programs of transformation which involve others in the organization while keeping themselves “safely away.”

At American International College we implemented Blackboard accomplishments in a variety of training scenarios in order to improve tracking, accountability, and engagement. Three separate use cases are presented: online faculty certification, online student orientation, help desk cross training certification.
Presented at NERCOMP PDO Blackboard Users Group 2015.
Making Faculty Training More Agile with Blackboard BadgesKaitlin Walsh
As colleges increase their online course offerings, so does the need to train faculty to transition to the online format. Also, with a number of these online courses being taught by adjuncts who work full time or teach elsewhere, perhaps the biggest challenge is finding the time to complete the training. How do we cover the points they need to know in the little time they have? And how do we make the training relevant or meaningful to those who have had previous training elsewhere?
At American International College, we sought to address these challenges by using a competency-based badge system to support our training program for faculty teaching online. Faculty complete tasks to demonstrate their mastery of Blackboard skills, online pedagogy and AIC policies and procedures, with each set of tasks leading to a badge. Faculty who already have experience in these areas can demonstrate their competencies in alternate methods to earn their badges. This presentation will provide an overview of AIC’s redeveloped training program for faculty teaching online. We will address considerations of structure and implementation, as well as the benefits for full- and part-time faculty.

Webinar: How Tax Preparers & Accountants Can Increase Their Profitability Usi...GoLeanSixSigma.com
Tax return preparation is increasingly becoming a commodity. Automation can help reduce the level of manual work required for return preparation, but if you automate a “bad process” you still won’t see an increase in profitability or improved client service.
Tax practices should apply Lean Six Sigma (LSS) before automating their tax workflows to optimize processes and automation, while still remaining in compliance with professional standards.
Attend this webinar and you’ll learn how to:
- Apply Lean Six Sigma to tax workflow
- Combine tax automation with value pricing
- Increase your practice’s profitability

Project Storyboard: Reducing Cycle Time for Bid Tab Creationby 33%GoLeanSixSigma.com
Think it's impossible to make a significant change in government? Well, it's not easy, but GoLeanSixSigmna.com Black Belt Pamela Kuehling made a real difference from the inside. She overturned countless "honest wrong beliefs" with facts and data by modeling the Lean Six Sigma approach in her work and won over the doubters.
Initially the overall procurement process was the focus, but when that proved to be too big, she scoped it down to a more manageable project that can now be the basis for an expanded improvement. Her improvement was meaningful, but a bigger victory was in bringing critical and logical thinking into an environment often impacted by less scientific influences!
Value Stream Mapping is an essential tool to help understand the current state and design the future state of a process. Learn more about why this kind of mapping is fundamental for a big picture view of an entire Value Stream and for improving transactional and manufacturing processes.
SUCCESS STORY: Reducing Hiring Time From 10 Months to 36 DaysGoLeanSixSigma.com
Kent partnered with Cassandra to improve the Illinois Tollway’s hiring process that was 95% paper-based and would take over 10 months to fill a position. They were also facing a high turn-over rate, lack of technological assistance, and low applicant alignment to position needs. As it stood, the hiring process could use some help.
They started out by asking themselves two questions:
- What’s possible?
- What approach should we use to improve the hiring process?
In order to answer their first question, they needed to develop a better understanding of the current process. They chose to use DMAIC as their approach to improving the hiring process. They also thought it was important to identify the inhibitors of process change within the Illinois Tollway. Unfortunately, There were several: politics, policy, law, processes, technology, culture, and staff.
With their approach determined and inhibitors in mind, they set out to map their process.
SUCCESS STORY: How King County Treasury Reduced Taxpayer Late Fees by 62%, Fe...GoLeanSixSigma.com
Ana Schoenecker has worked for the King County Treasury for 14 years. She is the current Real Property Administrator for the Property Tax Office and she is a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt. Laura Wilson has worked for King County for almost 12 years and in Treasury for 6 years. She is a Fiscal Specialist in the Property Tax Office and she is also a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
After receiving many calls from angry taxpayers who were forced to pay extra interest and penalties on their mortgages, Ana and Laura knew that their mail blow backs were responsible.
The Challenge:
Mail blow backs are any returned mail that was unable to be delivered. In this case, payment deadlines were being mailed but due to outdated information in their system, many taxpayers weren’t receiving these notices. When this mail is not received, taxpayers end up paying later and larger delinquency fees - resulting in lower customer satisfaction with the county.
The Discovery:
Ana and Laura started their project by gathering the Voice of the Customer to better understand their customer requirements. They then created a SIPOC to understand the scope of their project and used an “As-Is” Process Map to understand the full process end-to-end.
After mapping their process, they formed a Data Collection Plan, collected sample baseline data from 2016, and found that taxpayers who did not receive their notice letter paid an average of $409 in late fees! Taxpayers who were not able to be notified for years were even approaching foreclosure. Not good!
So Ana and Laura decided to create a Fishbone Diagram to identify potential root causes for this issue and verified their Root Causes to vet the suspected problem-causers. One discovery was that there was no follow-up process to ensure that returned mail would eventually reach taxpayers and this needed to change.
The Improvements:
Ana and Laura completed a Solution Selection Matrix and were able to identify the best solution for their problem. They decided to add steps to their process to follow up on this returned mail in order to better provide taxpayers with the ability to avoid increased interest payments and penalty fees.
The steps they added were:
Revenue Collections would forward the returned mail to Treasury
Treasury Customer Service would research returned notices, update address information in their system, reissue the notices, and track them to ensure they are delivered
After implementing these two steps into their process, they saw an enormous benefit to their taxpayers:
- In 2018, taxpayers paid an average of $253 less in interest and penalties than in 2016
- In 2018, Taxpayers paid an average of 2.5 months faster than they did in 2016

PROJECT STORYBOARD: Project Storyboard: Reducing Underwriting Resubmits by Ov...GoLeanSixSigma.com
GoLeanSixSigma.com Black Belt Tyson Simmons project to reduce underwriting package defects and subsequent re-submission demonstrates some great points. His team voted to narrow down potential root causes and noted them with dots on their Fishbone Diagram. Then the big "Oh darn!" When they tested the suspected root causes (analyst and submitter), neither of them proved to be statistically significant.
What do you do when all of your root causes prove to be false? You go back and look for more which is what Tyson did. The red dots on the Fishbone Diagram suggested the next possible root cause, which did prove out. Nice job, Tyson, for sticking with the process and shooting right past your goal!

PROJECT STORYBOARD: Reducing Software Bug Fix Lead Time From 25 to 15 daysGoLeanSixSigma.com
GoLeanSixSigma.com Green Belt Eduardo Torres did a great job of cutting waste out of the process of fixing software bugs. The use of software is growing fast, and with no known way to guarantee new software is error-free, rapidly fixing bugs found is critical. Eduardo not only cut nearly 40% of the process time, but also cut the variability in half, greatly improving reliability!

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
