A hard disk drive is a non-volatile storage device that retains data even when power is removed. It contains spinning magnetic disks and a drive head that reads and writes data to the disks. In 1961, IBM introduced one of the first disk drives about the size of a washing machine that could store 2 million characters. By the 1980s, hard disk drives became standard features on PCs as their costs decreased significantly.
