5. WORLD PROBLEM
As of 2011, 1.3 billion tons of food are
lost or wasted annually (about one third
of the global food production).
*****
Loss & wastage occurs on all steps in the food supply chain. In
low-income countries, most loss occurs during production, while
in developed countries much food (approx. 100 kgs or 220 lbs per
person and year) is wasted at the consumption stage.

are those who walk upon the earth

16. Islamic leaders have called on the world's 1.6 billion Muslims and their organizations (NGOs),
institutions, Mosques and Governments to play an active role in combatting climate change
and have urged governments to conclude an effective universal climate change through
actionable practice and policies. Among other things the Declaration calls for:
• A rapid phase-out of fossil-fuels and a switch to 100% renewable energy;
• Increased support by the major green house gas emitters (Geo-political global north – so
called developed nations and China) for vulnerable communities (Geo-political global
south), including people of color who are disproportionately suffering from climate change
impacts and where much of the Muslim population of the world resides;
• Wealthy and oil-producing nations (of which the USA is now number one) are urged to
phase out all greenhouse gas emission by 2050;
• All people, leaders and businesses are invited to commit to 100% renewable energy
in order to tackle climate change, reduce poverty and achieve sustainable
development.

17. Global Muslim Climate Network
launched on Friday, April 22nd, 2016
at the UNHQ in New York
The network serves as a platform for all Muslim
nations and communities from prominent religious
scholars, high level government officials,
businesses to grassroots communities, to overcome
the challenges of global climate change impacts,
especially in vulnerable communities.
• To set up a global grassroots/community
initiatives (such as Green Ramadan, Green
Mosque, Green Hajj)
• To mobilize the religious leaders to act upon the
Istanbul Declaration in their respective countries.
• To build a cooperation and collaboration among
Muslim communities globally as well as with
other faiths’ communities in order to take more
ambitious action and lead the way in
transformation to a fossil fuel-free, renewable
energy powered world.

20. F O O D C O N S E R V A T I O N
• Reduce food waste & over
consumption during iftars :
By eating moderately,
keeping in mind the hadith
(can fill up to ⅓ of stomach
with food, ⅓ water & ⅓ air).
• Take only what you can
comfortably finish : Share
with the needy (poor) people.
21. “O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you
and be grateful to Allah if it is (indeed) Him that you worship”
~ The Holy Qur’an, Chapter 2 Verse 172
Consume Local Food
( more vegetables & less meat )
food travels an average of 1,200 to 2,200 miles
imagine how much fuel is being used..!
24. Energy Efficiency
Switch-off & Unplug
Use energy saving lights
& energy efficient appliances
“Turn off your lamps or lights before you go to sleep”
~ Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
Americans constitute only
5% of the world's
population but consume
24% of the world's energy.
• Conserve Electricity : Replace incandescent light bulbs to energy
efficient light bulbs, such as LED, CFL & no electricity wasted with
inefficient light bulbs
• Utilize energy efficiently : Switch-off and/or unplug unused electronic
appliances & gadgets
26. ECO MASJID PROGRAM in INDONESIA
In 2015 the Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) launched the Eco Mosque
Program focusing on water conservation and started to include renewable
energy in 2017 supported by the National Masjid Council (DMI) – starting
in 2018, it will join a million solar roof campaign in which 1000 mosques
will be installed with solar panel as their source of electricity by 2020
27. In 2016 the Moroccan Government launched the Green Mosque Program
by having renewable energy installed in 15,000 mosques by 2019 along
with the Green Sermon Training for Muslim Scholars and Preachers (e.g.
Imams and Morchidates)
