Green SAB Technology for Artificial Hydraulic Bed Development
(Indian Patent No : 268563 granted on 3rd September 2015 )
Genre
This technology, in general, is a solution to Soil Scour and Sedimentation in any Hydraulic
Environments at the boundary of water and soil. This kind of hydraulic boundary is common
in case of beaches, river banks, river beds, seabed, etc.
Concept
Erosion of soil in any hydraulic environment at the boundary of water and soil takes place
primarily due to hydraulic soil scour. This scour takes place when pore pressure reaches
beyond the soil sustainable levels by adjacent water, which is in dynamic motion as part of
natural or artificial processes. So, scour reduction is the basic principle of this technology.
Scour reduction in this technology is achieved by inducing flow energy dissipation using
specially designed artificial deadweight SAB units. Consequent to the use of this technology
and its result of relatively calm flows, the accumulation and gravitational settlement of
sediments around these artificial SAB units result protection of human habitation adjacent
to the erodible or scourable boundaries of water and soil in any hydraulic environment.
Existing methods of protection for soil erosion on the beaches, river banks, bridge piers, etc.
are like the game between the nature and humans with sword by the nature and shield by
the humans.
What is SAB?
(S)ediment (A)accumulator in (B)each of a coast, (B)ank of enclosed water bodies like river,
lakes and (B)ed of any hydraulic environments. So, it is called SAB Technology. These
artificial sediment accumulator units are called SAB Units.
How it is Green?
In dynamic traffic systems, green signal is an
indicator of “Go Ahead” without any
disturbance. The artificial unit of this
technology is like a Green Signal of dynamic
hydraulic environments. It does not disturb
significantly the adjacent hydraulic
environments of artificial units. The Green
Concept, while finding a solution to any
problem, is based on the principles of all
dynamic systems are addressed without any
disturbance or with no disturbance. In the
present case, the SAB unit disturbs the local
hydraulic environment such that it induces siltation around it and in turn it builds buffer

sediments against erosion initially and reinforced sedimented bed to sustain against erosion
on long‐term period.
What are Application Areas?
1. Protection of River and Estuarine Banks from Erosion
2. Artificial River Bed Development
3. Shore Protection from natural and anthropogenic sea erosion
4. Scour Control around Marine and Hydraulic Structures
5. Coastal Inlet/ Hydraulic Channel Stability
6. Installation of Shore crossing Pipelines in the Surfzone
Application Examples
The birth of this concept has taken place with the first example of beach protection at
Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay Mamallapuram, near Chennai, India.
