AROUND THE WORLD, more than 2 billion people are thought to be affected by an often invisible form of malnutrition: micronutrient malnutrition, commonly known as hidden hunger.1 Vitamin and mineral deficiencies—at least in mild to moderate forms—may not be as observable as wasting or obesity, but their effects are far-reaching. Globally, vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is the leading cause of blindness in children.2 Iodine deficiency causes 18 million babies to be born mentally impaired each year.3 And severe anemia caused by lack of iron is associated with the deaths of 115,000 women annually during childbirth.4 Vitamin A, iodine, and iron are classified as “the big three,” but deficiencies of other micronutrients, such as folate, zinc, vitamin B12, and vitamin D, are also important.

Breastfeeding is a ‘team’ process: mother and babies form the core of the team, with family, friends, and others serving as team members, coaches, cheerleaders, and fans. Mothers have goals for breastfeeding and need the help and support of the whole team to achieve those goals. As with a sports game, there can be small successes and setbacks through the course of a family’s breastfeeding experience, though striving all the time to win. The 2014 World Breastfeeding Week theme, “Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal – For Life!” celebrates the team effort needed to make breastfeeding easier.

An information system on nutrition for the Ministry of Health of Sudan and the WHO Country Office is discussed in this presentation. During emergencies in Sudan, nutrition surveys and surveillance focused on therapeutic feeding programs (TFPs) at pediatric wards and supplementary feeding programs (SFPs) in internally displaced people at camps. The nutritional status of the community, however, was unknown. Over the long term, it will be necessary to collect information about communicable and noncommunicable diseases in Sudan. An update to the nutrition information system was recommended in this proposal without affecting existing sustainability conditions.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.

Background
• The GHI is calculated for 120 countries where measuring hunger
is most relevant and for which data on the three indicators of
hunger are available.
• The 2014 GHI reflects data from 2009-2013—it is thus a
snapshot of the recent past.
• The GHI combines these three equally weighted indicators into
one score: the proportion of people who are undernourished,
the proportion of children under five who are underweight, and
the mortality rate of children younger than age five.
• An increase in a country’s GHI score indicates that the hunger
situation is worsening. A decrease in the GHI score indicates
improvement in the country’s hunger situation.
