In India, transportation is mainly by roads. Very small villages, remote areas and hilly areas can be accessed only by roads. Hence considerable attention is required towards the widening of roads, their stability and periodic repair works. Most state highways in the central part of India have problems of foundation due to presence of highly compressible clayey soils like black cotton soil. Black cotton soil is an expansive soil, which swells or shrinks excessively due to change in moisture content. When black cotton soil is associated with an engineering structure, it experiences either settlement or heave depending on the stress level and the soil swelling pressure. Design and construction of civil engineering structures on and with expansive soils is a challenging task for engineers. The present work is aimed to assess the improvement in the strength and stability characteristics in soft Subgrade soil by using the fly ash for the stabilization and then Nylon fibre as reinforcing material. Randomly distributed fibre reinforced soil (RDFRS) technique is used to prepare the reinforced soil samples. In RDFRS technique the mixing of reinforcement in the soil is very easy and no special skill is required. The reinforcement is added by percentage of the weight of the soil sample and by following certain aspect ratio i.e., length/diameter (L/D) ratio. Attempt is made to determine optimum combination of fly ash and fiber content for maximum gain in strength.

In India, transportation is mainly by roads. Very small villages, remote areas and hilly areas can be accessed only by roads. Hence considerable attention is required towards the widening of roads, their stability and periodic repair works. Most state highways in the central part of India have problems of foundation due to presence of highly compressible clayey soils like black cotton soil. Black cotton soil is an expansive soil, which swells or shrinks excessively due to change in moisture content. When black cotton soil is associated with an engineering structure, it experiences either settlement or heave depending on the stress level and the soil swelling pressure. Design and construction of civil engineering structures on and with expansive soils is a challenging task for engineers. The present work is aimed to assess the improvement in the strength and stability characteristics in soft Subgrade soil by using the fly ash for the stabilization and then Nylon fibre as reinforcing material. Randomly distributed fibre reinforced soil (RDFRS) technique is used to prepare the reinforced soil samples. In RDFRS technique the mixing of reinforcement in the soil is very easy and no special skill is required. The reinforcement is added by percentage of the weight of the soil sample and by following certain aspect ratio i.e., length/diameter (L/D) ratio. Attempt is made to determine optimum combination of fly ash and fiber content for maximum gain in strength.

A little research has taken place to study the characteristics and the behavior of dune sands. An extensive laboratory testing program was carried out to study the geo technical properties and the behavior of dune sands. The tests include moisture content, classification, compaction, relative density, direct shear, chemical tests. Also, loading tests were carried out on footing model of strip shape (3.2 × 33) cm rested on natural dune sand.

Geosynthetics
- 2. Geosynthetics are human made materials made from various types of polymers used to enhance, augments and make possible cost effective environmental, transportation and geotechnical engineering construction projects . They are used to provide one or more of the following functions. They are 5 principal functions of geosynthetics. 1. separation
- 3. 2. Reinforcement 3. Filtration 4. Drainage 5. Liquid barrier Basic description history:- They were used in road way construction in roman days to stabilize road ways and their edges. These early attempts were made of natural vegetation mixed with soil to improve road quality, particularly when roads were built
- 4. on unstable soil. They were also used to build steep slopes as with several pyramids in Egypt.
- 5. A permeable barrier placed between subsoil and coarse stone to maintain the bearing capacity of the hardcore layer.
- 7. A geosynthetic performs the reinforcement function by improving the mechanical properties of a soil mass as a result of its inclusion. Reinforced soil posses high compressive and tensile strength (and similar, in principal, to the reinforced concrete)
- 9. A geosynthetic may function as a filter that allows for adequate fluid flow with limited migration of soil particles across its place cover a projected service lifetime. When a geosynthetic filter is placed adjacent to a base soil, a discontinuity arises between the original soil structure and the structure of the geosynthetic.
- 10. This discontinuity allows some soil particles, particularly particles closest to the geosynthetic filter and having diameters smaller than the filter opening size.
- 12. If a geosynthetic allow for adequate fluid flow surrounding soil mass to various outlets.
- 14. A geosynthetic performs the fluid barrier function, if it acts like an almost impermeable membrane to prevent the migration of liquids or gases over a projected service lifetime.
