Coming Of Age And Adolescence In The 21st Century
INTRODUCTION
The Encyclopedia of World Problems and Human Potential identifies that the current lack of rites of
passage in modern, industrialised socities is a global problem, resulting in a serious breakdown in the
process of maturing (Grimes 2000) for adolescents moving from childhood to adulthood, specifically.
To move through adolescence in the modern, Western world is a highly individualised experience,
meaning that it differs between each individual person and also that it is a largely solitary process;
coming of age in the 21st century means learning to stand alone as a self sufficient person (Arnett,
1998) who is independently responsible for their own guidance and decision making among a wide
range of possibilities (Arnett, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is said that high school graduation ceremonies most closely resemble the structure and function of a
more traditional rites of passage ceremony in the modern world. However, the high school graduation
ceremony does not prepare or initiate youth with the practical skills or discernments necessary to
proceed successfully in living outside of the home (Hamitlon Hamilton, 2008); it is a superficial event
that publically acknowledges a youth s supposed maturing but neglects to include, generally, any of
the practical work of identity building that was a central facet of traditional ceremonies. High school
graduation ceremonies serve only to signify an academic success or a coming of age, but the popular
notion that maturity means to be academically successful or to reach a particular age alone misses the
most important part of the process, which is that work is

My Position on Eternal Life, Rabbi Maimonides
Rabbi Maimonides, you take the position that it is not obvious that world is not eternal. I understand
that you did comprehensive examination of the cognitive in approval of the world s eternity. You came
to the conclusion that it could not be disapproved or proven. I have come up with my own ideas and
reasons to try to persuade that you could accept it. Even though it can t be proven that the world is
eternal, the world could be eternal because Maimonides could accept that because he has no
convincing or superseding reason to reject it. Maimonides you define God as the mere eternal thing
and beforehand conception, he had existed alone. Conception ex nihilo does not merely mean that
something came from nothing but insists that God does not demand a physical cause in creation. And
conception de novo does not mean that God exists in period and space and picks a particular moment
to onset His creation. This think constitutes a drastic separation amid the Creator and His conception
merely God is eternal and He alone is accountable for creation. If you say God is eternal than as long
as God exists than the world will exists therefore making it eternal as well. Time itself is one of these
creations or a mishap of conception it is not eternal. To say that God was existent beforehand
conception implies that He continued in time. It is tough for us to envision something that was or is
beyond of time. But as you Maimonides state, the fact that we cannot envision of something extant

Persuasive Essay On Modern Technology
Technology, quite obviously, is all around us. That was exemplified by the research of Michigan born
computer scientist, Bill Joy. In 1982, he co founded Sun Microsystems and was the chief scientist until
2003. He is the author of the world renowned article, Why the Future Doesn t Need Us. This article
articulates Joy s worries over the development of modern technologies. This essay speaks of genetic
engineering, nanotechnology, and robotics (GNR), which are threatening to make humans an
endangered species. 21st century technologies, honestly, are dangerous. They should not be used to
overpower the human populace. Joy had just begun to realize this in 1998, after a discussion with Ray
Kurzweil, the deservedly famous inventor of the first reading machine for the blind and many other
amazing things . Along with the Berkeley philosopher, John Searle, who studies consciousness,
Kurzweil told the two about how the rate of improvement of technology would increase, and thus,
sentient robots were in the realm of possibility. After reading an early draft of Kurzweil s book, The
Age of Spiritual Machines: When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence, Joy s unease accelerated.
There is a passage in the book by the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski. Joy did not agree with the
seventeen year murderous rampage that the man went on, as one of his bombs had gravely injured one
of Joy s friends, David Gelernter, who is a brilliant computer scientist. Although Joy was afraid for his
life during

The Brooklyn Nets Offseason Case Study
The Brooklyn Nets Offseason: A Sensible Plan for the Future The Brooklyn Nets have made a name
for blockbuster deals over the last few summers. Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has not been shy of
spending money and laughing at the luxury tax if it meant making a contender. This summer, the Nets
have been singing a different tune; making moves to save money and diminish expectations. Addition
by Subtraction The biggest move the Nets made this offseason was letting go of All Star point guard
Deron Williams. The Williams experiment did not work and it was rumored that he didn t get along
with coaches and teammates. The Nets wanted to get younger and more athletic, and with Williams
gone, they were on the right path to doing that. The Nets used ... Show more content on

They were close to making a deal that would have sent Joe Johnson to the Cavaliers, but backed out
because they didn t want to take on Anderson Varejao s contract. A smart move on the Nets part. They
believe Johnson will play better this season with Williams no longer on the team. Plus, taking back
both Haywood and Varejao s contracts would have kept the team near the luxury tax line. If their
gamble pays off and Johnson plays well, they can try again in moving him by the trade deadline for a
better price. The End Game The Nets aren t going to win a championship this year. I think I can safely
say that. They should use this year to build chemistry with their brand new team and use this year to
prepare for a bounce back year in

Telemachus As A Hero
A hero can be defined in many different ways, such as a man or woman who performs tasks otherwise
not able to be performed by a normal human being. Telemachus is a different breed of hero compared
to our modern day Superman and Batman. Telemachus, the son of a king, is often seen by the public.
Being the son of a king has its benefits and its downfalls, he must be a person that the public can look
to for solutions while his father is gone, but he also has power that others do not have. He exhibits the
characteristics of becoming a great hero and leader by using his power for good and not abusing it.
Telemachus goes upon a hero s journey and learns how to become a great leader by taking initiative
and setting off on a journey to find his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a new experience, something that is most definitely nerve wracking and taxing. This will be his
first time on his own and to make it worse he is by himself on a boat. He has never been away from
home before, let alone sailed on the open seas. Another obstacle that he has to overcome during this
separation stage of his journey is being separated from his mother. He has never been without his
mother for an extended period of time, and he will be leaving her alone with suitors that have been
asking for her hand in marriage. These suitors show no evidence throughout the book that they treat
Penelope with any sort of respect. They also don t respect that Penelope still loves Odysseus.
Telemachus has the right to be concerned about leaving his mother behind with these scoundrels.
The last part of Telemachus s initiation is when he steps foot on the ship and sets sail. This is a huge
leap into manhood because he is taking the initiative to find his dad. Once he has gotten on the ship,
he is in charge of the ship. It is similar to being in charge of a small kingdom on the sea. There are
only twenty men that make up the crew, but that is twenty people s lives that are in his hands. Lastly,
the most important part of the initiation is setting sail from his homeland. From that point forward
there would be no turning back. He was then officially on his own.
When Athena came and told Telemachus that he should search for his father, she

Nuclear Force Research Papers
Nuclear forces have been around the human race since the beginning of time, though it was not until
recently that people began to understand it. Nuclear decay has helped scientists discover how long
unstable isotopes maintain their unstable state before becoming a more stable isotope. The study of
nuclear chemistry has given people in the medical field powerful tools to combat feared illnesses such
as cancer. Nuclear forces have also provided an alternative energy source to coal and natural gas. The
field of nuclear chemistry encompasses many aspects including nuclear decay, radioactive elements in
medicine, and nuclear energy. Alpha, beta, gamma to many people those three words are the first three

Nuclear medicine however has made it possible to treat cancer. One of the forms of cancer treatments
that involve radioactive materials is radiation therapy. Radiation therapy utilizes X and gamma rays to
target and kill the cancer cells. Radiation therapy kills cancer cells by damaging their DNA. Radiation
can either damage the DNA directly or create charged particles in cells that in turn damage the DNA. (
Radiation Therapy for Cancer ) Radiation therapy affects only the selected area of treatment, whereas
other treatments such as chemo therapy affects the entire body. Radiation therapy can be administered
two different ways. The first method of administration is internally. Radiation is injected directly into
the blood stream where it travels to the cancerous area. The other method of administering radiation
therapy is externally. Many types of external beam radiation therapy are delivered using a machine
called a linear accelerator (also called a LINAC). A LINAC uses electricity to form a stream of fast
moving subatomic particles. This creates high energy radiation that may be used to treat cancer. (

Hunter Thompson Journalism
Hunter S. Thompson was the man responsible for what is known today as gonzo journalism. This type
of journalism is written in the first person narrative and places the reporter in the middle of the action,
allowing for personal experiences, emotions, and biases in a way that defies traditional journalism.
Thompson s subversive style of journalism was so radical that according to Jennifer Marinelli s (2010)
post on the Michigan Online News Association, Thompson didn t just create a new form of
journalism. He created a new way of thinking that is still important in today s society (para. 2). In
other words, he didn t just transform journalism; he transformed people s minds. Perhaps this should

The Pros And Cons Of The Belize Guatemala Territorial Dispute
Belize Guatemala Territorial Dispute Should we agree on taking the Belize Guatemala territorial
dispute to the ICJ? The international Court of Justice commonly known as the World Court. It is the
central judicial branch of the United Nations, where the Court s role is to resolve legal disputes and to
give consultative opinions on legal questions (International court of Justice). The Belize Guatemala
territorial dispute is an unresolved bi national territorial dispute between both countries, neighbours in
Central America. Guatemala has been claiming Belize territory in whole or in part since 1940. Belize
is an independent country that is rich in resources, and this is why more than ever Guatemala is
claiming Belize s territory; therefore history has been made for many centuries regarding this issue
and if it is agreed in going to the ICJ there would most likely be some advantages and disadvantage,
but still there are Belizeans that agree on going to the ICJ while others opposed from going. This few
Belizeans that agree on going to the ICJ have their own opinions regarding this issue, and they share

a Belizean can undertake. Moreover there are others that oppose from going to the ICJ and think ...

Incivilities In Neighborhood
Neighborhood disorder, broadly defined as the social and physical incivilities within a neighborhood
(Sampson Raudenbush, 1999), affects residents perceptions of fear and safety (Austin, Furr Spine,
2002; Yavuz Welch, 2010). Social incivilities could include drunk people in public space or
panhandlers while physical incivilities include litter or deliberate property damage. Wilson s and
Kelling s broken windows theory (1982) provides social sciences with the most well known model of
neighborhood disorder, which posits that the presence of physical and social incivilities lead to greater
fear among neighborhood residents. Consequently, a cycle of perpetual social breakdown within the
neighborhood occurs.

Furthermore, even less is known about how men respond to violence within their neighborhoods. The
literature suggests that men are more prone to fears of confrontation or robbery, therefore, men s
perceptions of safety may revolve around community violence, such as robberies/muggings, gang
fights, or fights with weapons, and less around sexual

Juliet s Growth Since the Start of William Shakespeare s...
Juliet s Growth Since the Start of William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet The play Romeo and Juliet
was written in approximately 1595, by William Shakespeare. It is set in Venice, Italy, in Venetian
society women played little role in anything other than to be a wife to their husband and a mother.
This is why many Venetian women married at such an early age. The play is about 2 families whom
are separated by a long forgotten ancient feud. Throughout the play of Romeo and Juliet we see Juliet
emerging as a woman. There are many people that influence this growth. However there are also many
people which inhibit and even try to prevent her from growing from a child into a woman. Romeo

In this scene we see Juliet as a very naïve character, and in a later scene we see the complete antithesis
of her character, where she is no longer a naïve young girl, who does everything her parents command
her to do. We see her as an independent and sophisticated married woman. Act 1 Scene 5 is the scene
set at the party at the Capulet s household. Juliet s mother introduces her to the County Paris, but
before that, she sets eyes on Romeo, of the House of Montague. Romeo is not aware the Juliet is from
the house of Capulet, he thinks she is exceptionally beautiful. He describes her as a snowy dove,
trooping with crows , the dove symbolises purity, peace and is associated with the colour white,
however crows symbolise hatred and are usually associated with the colour black. This can be linked
to the theme of the feud which exists between the two households, Juliet is pure, but the rest of her
house is filled with hatred and distrust. We then see Juliet s first move to disobey her mother, she
leaves the hall of the ball with Romeo. We see the beginning of Juliet s journey from a child into an
independent woman. We are also made aware of her emerging sexuality. Romeo uses an extended
metaphor in an attempt to get Juliet to kiss him; he describes her as a saintly being and himself as a
sinner who needs his sins cleansing. Juliet knows

Buddhism

Fall 2014
I. Introduction
Buddhism was started by a man named Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha ). He was born ca. 563
B.C.E. in Lumbini near the Himalayan foothills. Siddhartha Gautama was the warrior son of a king
and queen. Legend has it that at his birth an astrologer predicted he would withdraw from the temporal
life. His father, in an effort to prevent this, provided him with many luxuries and pleasures. As a
young man, he once went on a series of four chariot rides where he first saw severe forms of suffering:
old age, illness, and death (a corpse), as well as an ascetic renouncer, according to the Asia Society
(2014). The Buddha had a difficult time reconciling his life compared to human suffering and
abandoned his way of life leaving his wife and new son. He lived in the forest to the point of near
starvation. Finally, he ate some food and sat down by a tree to meditate. According to some
approximately six months later he attained Nirvana and discovered the true answers of suffering and
the release from it.
There are three basic principles of the Buddha s teachings: Sila, Samadhi, and Panna. Sila is the
development of morality. Samadhi is the tool to purify the mind on order to see its nature, how to
control it, how to develop it, and make use of it. Panna is wisdom or enlightenment the realization of
the true nature of life and universe at large.

Essay On The Tragical History Of Doctor Faustus
To begin, the Tragical History of Doctor Faustus was a play written in sixteenth century by
Christopher Marlowe. In the play, the main character, Doctor Faustus, is bored because he feels that he
has learned all the knowledge that is acceded to in the state that he is in, therefore, he has some other
scholars who know about dark magic to teach him their ways. While he is learning dark magic Doctor,
Faustus summons a demon named Mephistopheles, who helps Faustus sell his soul to the devil.
Throughout the play, Faustus begins to have doubts and starts to repent, however, the only answer that
he receives is from Mephistopheles and Lucifer teach his about the Seven Deadly Sins leaving he is
impressed and stopping his doubts. With his newly found power, Faustus and Mephistopheles travel
through Europe playing trick on people such as the Pope and Emperor of German yet his time soon
runs out. An old man urges Faustus to repent, but Faustus drives him away. On his final night, Faustus
is overcome by fear and remorse, but it is too late because at midnight devils appear and carry his soul
off to hell. God is absent throughout the play to reflect Faustus beliefs on God, as well as, Marlowe s
own religious beliefs.
In addition, the absence of God reflect the beliefs of Faustus on God. Faustus does not believe in God.
Faustus has no desire to serve God, but he does have a desire to please himself by using his power to

The Definition Of Marriage And Family Relationships Essay
What is the definition of marriage in the Bible? Better yet what is the definition of family in the Bible?
In Scripture there are many families which could be studied in order to better answer this question, but
some of the most prominent choices are Abraham s family, David s family, and Solomon s family.
Each of these families in turn had their own sets of issues and problems, but there are also Biblical
solutions to these problems which shall be address through the course of this paper. But, before this is
done it is important to take note of what God s definitions are.
To begin, I will start by explaining what my understanding of marriage and family relationships
according to scripture are supposed to look like. Now, throughout both the Old Testament and New
Testament many commandments are given to both children and parents. For instance, one of the most
obvious commands given to children was, Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live
long in the land the Lord your God is giving you, (Ex. 20:12, New International Version (NIV)). To
honor someone means to treat him or her with respect and put them in a place of high esteem. Honor
and respect means a child should not speak back to their parents, they should not curse out their
parents in any way, and in general they should respect their parents wishes. But, going further than
this Colossians 3:20 says, Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord, (Col.
3:20, NIV).

Definition of Marketing Marketing is often misunderstood. Ask the average person how they would
define marketing and a majority would reply with something along the lines of commercials, ads,
brochures, and other items used to market a business. Marketing is complex. It is a process, a practice,
and a philosophy. As a process, it moves goods and services from an idea all the way through to the
customer. As a practice, it embodies the elements of product, price, place, and promotion. As a
philosophy, it is the basis of how customers needs and satisfaction are met by the business product or

Nike uses successful and famous sports figures to endorse their products. Consumers are willing to

of life and the living standards of people. The change of society has created the need for citizens to be

Cognitive Disorders
1. The four major categories of cognitive disorders are: delirium which is an alteration in
consciousness that manifest and progresses over a relatively short span of time where people have a
decreased cognizance of their surrounding environment; dementia is an on going atrophy of brain
function that is pronounced by damage of memory, bewilderment and inability to focus; amnesia
marked by an indicative loss of memory, against no loss of other cognitive functions that appear in
dementia; there is also an inclusion of other cognitive disorders not particularly specified that may
otherwise not be categorized properly on their own. A broad assortment of factors may lead to
cognitive disorders, that could also encompass other general medical conditions such as brain
infections or head injuries.
Cognitive disorders are normally assessed after physical and neurological inspection. Examples of
these tests would be imaging exams, blood screening, liver function tests and thyroid analysis.
Treatment options vary and depend on what kind of condition appears. Delirium for instance is
normally treated adequately through analysis of the underlying cause, the prognosis however, is not as
positive for patients suffering from dementia or amnesia. Common mental disorders such as
depression, affect cognitive functions, through the process of memory as well perception and problem
solving. As mentioned for the fourth category, other cognitive disorders make up this section.

Divina was destined for Santiago, but she did not want to let that happen. He was just like his father, a
shit, (10). This hatred for the men of the Nasar family was passed on to Divina. She had so much
repressed rage the morning of the crime......to embitter Santiago Nasar s breakfast (10). This personal
hatred was the direct cause of
Santiago s death. When Santiago came running to his front door with the Vicario brothers in chase, the
door was locked. Just minutes before, Santiago s mother was in a frenzy after she heard what was
going to happen to Santiago. However, Divina calmed her down by telling her that Santiago had gone
up to his room just a minute ago.

Babylon Revisited Essay
As the spokesman of the jazz age generation and impassioned American youth, F. Scott Fitzgerald
dealt with the effects a self absorbed lifestyle can have on a spirit and a society in his work Babylon
Revisited. Though Fitzgerald s literary works did not become success or popular till after his death,
Fitzgerald is now considered one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. In Babylon
Revisited, Fitzgerald tells Charles J. Wales journey in the lovely city of Paris by furnishing a detailed
setting. Fitzgerald opens the story of Wales in a Ritz bar in Paris. Fitzgerald insinuates that the bar and
the people he used to socialize with had changed drastically from the time Mr. Wales had been there
last, But the stillness in the Ritz bar was strange and portentous... It had gone back into France.
(Fitzgerald, p. 365). Wales finds that all his friends have moved on to different places he ... Show

Fitzgerald presents numerous settings in his short story, but they are all need to give a thorough
understanding of the story. In order to provide the reader with an understanding of how Wales s
daughter came to live with her aunt and uncle, the reader needs to know that her mother is dead and
her father was not in a situation to be her father at the time of her mother s death. In order to
understand why the daughter s aunt is exceptionally cautious about allowing the child to return to her
father s care, the reader needs to know that she blames Wales for the death of her sister because he
locked her out of their house one night when she caught pneumonia. Fitzgerald effectively supplies a
descriptive story line that keeps the reader intrigued and does not require them to constantly be
guessing about what has happened to lead to the events happening in the story. Fitzgerald is an
interesting and effective writer as evidenced in his Babylon

Why I Am Researching A Construction Worker
Kyle Smith
Mrs. Lozares
English II
15 February 2017
Construction Worker 1.The career that I am researching is a construction worker. I am interested in
this occupation because ever since I was a little kid, construction seemed like it would be something
that might be fun. It also would be cool to see a building slowly rise, or even fall. That is why I am
researching a construction worker. 2.There are many responsibilities for this career. Those
responsibilities consist of building, demolishing, cleaning an area for preparation of building
something. You may also be digging holes or operating heavy machinery on this job. Some of the
large machinery or tools that construction workers use are saws, drills, blowtorches and jackhammers.

(3M.com).
9.There could be some specific abilities that can help you in this occupation. One of them could
possibly be strength. This could be a quality that could help you because of the things you would have
to lift on the job such as bags of concrete, or maybe some stones that need to be clear in order to start
building. Another quality could be the knowledge to save money. There are positions for construction
workers that are meant specifically to help the company that you are working for to save money. If
you know ways to get around expensive things and get supplies or anything else that could be costly,
then this would be a good position to have that knowledge. The ability to drive heavy machinery in
this occupation would be extremely important for this occupation. The reason it would be so important
for this type of career is because there is a lot of need for vehicles like this. These vehicles are used for
all sorts of things in construction from digging holes, dumping dirt, transporting rocks or dirt to or
from the construction site, and even pouring concrete. These are a few of the specific abilities that
could help me on the job.
11.There are some limiting factors that go with being a construction worker. The first one is that there
could be some long hours. Depending on how many workers, the project, and the weather, there could
be some quite long hours involved in this type of job. Another limiting factor is the chance of a
disease. There are many

Fredrick Alternate Ending
I managed to get to the pod and to Charles before Fredrick, but it wasn t easy. The boy was on my
heels the whole damn way. I slammed the door to Charles s room as I entered, locking it, and then
turning to a very surprised Charles standing by his window. You two looked like seagulls going after
one prey. Fredrick banged on the door behind me. I tried to ignore his squeaky threats to barge down
the door. He probably could, but he wouldn t get past me. Not yet anyway. You have to tell him
Charlie. Charles s relaxed grin immediately turned into a sour frown. He ll try to stop me. He ll try
everything in his power, even knock me out and lock me in a closet. Keep me prisoner. He mustn t
know. Either you tell him now or I will. Right now, I didn t care about his amber eyes ... Show more

Being a carrier I figured it was just a matter of time before you figured the whole system out. The
messaging system, the resistance group. Fredrick gave a little laugh. He apparently found the brief
moments where he knew more than me amusing. When we need a meeting with the other important
dissenters, the ink shimmers. The person then takes the item and, very carefully I might add, takes it to
the nearest identity scanner. He scans the ink, and the location of our meeting or alerts will show up on
the screen. Genius, I know. Fredrick pointed to Charles. This boy is a genius. I had no words. Not at
the moment. I had seen the word, Detonate, shine in my books a million times and wondered what
Detonate was trying to reveal through it. You would have figured it out if we had stayed, Charles said.
I could tell by your aura when you were examining the graffiti, you were trying to decipher the
meaning. Kinda funny right? Fredrick said with one eyebrow arched. The perfect one designs bombs
for the beloved Mother Country but he, and his charming and handsome partner in crime, created a
revolution ready to detonate when the perfect moment arrives.

Effects Of Africanization In This Side Jordan By Margret
Effects of Africanization in This Side Jordan by Margret Laurence
Post colonial Literary Theory came in to challenge and scrutinize the European theories which were
the false perception that they had the universal culture despite the fact that their culture was not able to
handle the complexities in the divergent cultures as depicted in the in the postcolonial writings.
Therefore, there was the emergence of the indigenous culture developed specifically to accommodate
the extremes of the two cultures, that is the traditional and the modern culture. European started the
expansion of the political sovereignty. During this time, the political strategies of the European were

The imperialists suppressed the culture of the countries they colonized through the use of conquest,
enslavement and finally the alienation of language to make their language superior to the language of
the original inhibitors of the land they conquered. Different writers, Margaret Laurence in her book
The side Jordan to be accurate have come up with the efforts of transforming the language to the
extent that it could capture the socio cultural aspects of the geographical locations of the nation s
Ghana and British. Among the futures that the users employ are the capability to examine and subvert
the formation of the culture of the imperialists. Therefore, her use of English literature responded to
this quest by making an attempt to develop the usage of the language that handled the sense of
otherness.
In Canada, Margret Laura makes the effort of reconstructing the lost identity of the cultural groups
that add up in making of the society in Canada through the use of her literary work. Some of the key
issues that the novel handles in the quest to of reconstructing the lost identity include the strive
towards the social recognition, the rebel against the brutality inflicted on the communities by the
colonial masters and the experience the communities encountered in the amongst the ethnic groups. In
this connection, therefore, Laurence crafted her work in the manner that it focusses on the identity

Girl Scout Interview
For my profile I interviewed a longtime friend and sister Girl Scout of mine. She goes by the name of
Rosie Houck. Girl Scout Programs build the confidence, courage, and character of the girls that will
one day be leading society to the future. Each year girls from around the world put all of the things
that they have learned about people and helping others to the test. There are three major awards that
can be earned in Girl Scouts, the bronze, the silver and the gold. Rosie Houck has completed all three
of them. An accomplishment that is obtained by fewer and fewer girls each year. I have always loved
helping people, said Rosie. Standing at a staggering height of five foot zero, Rosie isn t exactly tall.

corrals to see how they were holding up. As soon as she stepped out of the car the owner came out and
thanked her once again for all the work she had done. She helped ensure the business stayed afloat for
years to come. Knowing that you did something completely for someone else while expecting nothing

Dual Credit Course
This semester taking English dual credit I believe that not only my writing skills have improved but
my reading skills as well. Through this course I have learned how to find the deeper meanings of other
author s writings. I learned that part of understanding and comprehending comes from being able to
analyze. By learning how to analyze my skills as a writer have improved because I am able to use
some of the other writers skills and techniques on my own paper. Overall this course has helped me
tremendously. When comparing the other dual credit course I took last year to this course I would
have to say that the difficulty of both courses is similar even though the courses are very different.

This year with the assignments being due on mainly Sundays it has helped substantially, I am now
able to submit the work because my Sundays are not as busy. A reason for this class being harder is
because this course was a more time demanding, but I think it may be all English classes. The reason
for it being more time consuming is because in my other classes it was mostly just answering multiple
choice questions while this course is more breaking down components which takes a lot more thinking
which take sup more time. One big advantage of this course for me was that there were no test. I am
not a very good test taker because I think too much and sometimes get anxiety. This has affected me in
other classes because my bad testing skills results in bad grade on test which leads to the outcome of
my grades falling. With there not being any test, the stress that I would get is not there anymore. I am
able to write freely and not have anxiety and stress myself out. Another aspect of this course I believe
was helpful was the peer

Phoenix Jackson Thesis
Phoenix Jackson
The story A Worn Path, by Eudora Welty tells the story of a woman named Phoenix Jackson, who
lives in Natchez Mississippi. Phoenix has a grandson that she cares for that has swallowed a chemical
called lye, that was in many households back when Welty wrote this story. Lye poisoning was
common in rural areas. Welty is writing about this problem the hardship Phoenix Jackson went
through to receive medical treatment at that time. Without the name Phoenix Jackson and the
characteristics, she possesses there is no way she could overcome the obstacles that stood in her way.
With the first name of Phoenix, Ms. Welty is showing the symbol of a Greek mythological bird that
could live to be one hundred to one thousand years. The old phoenix dies in a pile of ashes, much like
the ashes used to make lye, only to reemerge a new magnificent, colorful bird, to live another cycle of
life (Wikipedia). Much like the bird, Phoenix Jackson has a red rag around her head, a wrinkled face
with yellow illuminating skin, ringlets hanging from her hair, a striped dress, and a bleached sugar
sack apron (Welty). In addition, similar, her age, like the bird, Phoenix is aged but wise, likely close to
one hundred years, reemerges back to life once she received the medicine her grandson needed. Even
the last name of Jackson is likely to be a symbol of a Doctor, who according to an essay by Melisa D.

Iago s Use of Language and Villainous Behavior in Shakespeare s Othello
In Othello, Shakespeare forms the villainous character, Iago through his complex language. Iago
shows his evil nature towards Roderigo through his use of demeaning animal imagery. Iago also uses
an extended metaphor to try and trick the ignorant Roderigo and (unknowingly to Roderigo), insults
him. Lastly, Iago uses repetition to beguile Roderigo to keep paying him. Iago s slyness is clearly seen
through his deceiving language towards the end of Act I.
In Act I, scene iii, line 319, Iago addresses the issue of love and lust through an extended metaphor. In
this speech, after Roderigo says he wants to kill himself, Iago tries to convince Roderigo not to end ...

Because nettles, hyssop, and thyme can all be referred to as weeds, Roderigo gives a negative tone.
However, this is not the only place where it is seen that Iago uses negativity.
Iago also uses animal imagery to beguile the ignorant Roderigo. In Act I, scene iii, line 314, Iago uses
degrading terms again in his dialogue; he states, Ere I would say I would drown myself for the love of
a guinea hen, I would change my humanity with a baboon. By expressing this, Iago is saying that he
would rather be a baboon than kill himself for a woman. The terms guinea hen, being a negative term
for a woman, and baboon, being a racial label, are both stated with the intent to insult Roderigo. Iago
also states, Come, be a man. Drown thyself? Drown cats and blind puppies! (Act I, scene iii, line 334)
which infers that Roderigo is weak and juvenile. Iago uses demeaning animal imagery to express his
thoughts towards the end of Act I.
Lastly, Iago uses repetition in the plot against Othello. In lines 337 355, Iago reiterates the statement,
put money in thy purse to convince Iago not to give up on trying to pursue Desdemona. Iago wants
Roderigo to keep his feelings for Desdemona so that he can be successful in his plot and plan
accordingly. Iago also uses the statement put money in thy purse for Roderigo to pay him. Iago craftily
uses his repetition to assure ignorant Roderigo s part in the

Criminal Justice Challenges
The Criminal Justice System has evolved during the 21st century, especially when it comes to the
challenges that it is faced with and the way Criminal Justice officials execute their actions. There are
many different challenges that the Criminal Justice System has encountered, however, this author
believes the most important challenge they have to encounter in the 21st century is the way the media
and society portray the role of law enforcement officials. It is the most important challenge because as
law enforcement officers they are to be trusted but if the media portrays them as untrustworthy or
corrupt then society will not respect them nor will they feel safe around them. As a reader, do you
believe that one of the most important challenges is the portrayal of law enforcement officials?
The media has a major impact on people s mindsets, especially the way that people view the criminal
justice system and law enforcement officials. According to an article in the Journal of Criminal Justice
and Popular Culture, it quotes, it is speculated that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a law enforcement official, it is their job to serve and protect the community. In order for them to
be able to serve and protect efficiently, their community has to trust them and be aware that they are
safe having law enforcement on their side. However, there are many citizens that do not trust law
enforcement officials because of the negative stories that media outlets publicize. Media outlets leave
the majority of the positive law enforcement stories out of the news and headlines, which makes
citizens not aware of the positive actions that police officers actually do. This author believes citizens
should not be quick to form a judgment on law enforcement until they have experienced negative
actions from law enforcement at hand. Although there may be law enforcement officials that may be
corrupt, not all of them are a part of those corrupt

The Day Of The Floor
As I step into the elevator, a chill runs down my spine. For starters, I hate elevators. Whenever I m in

floor, and what building I was in in general, but the remembrance of the floor number button six

This study found that six in ten Americans have a social profile on a SNS and that 71 million

those who have a SNS, and a twenty two percent increase of habitual users. The greatest growth rate is

Annual Mayors Luncheon For The Arts
Good afternoon Mayor Bowman, ladies and gentlemen, fellow artists, and arts supporters. It s a
pleasure to be here with you this afternoon at the annual Mayors Luncheon for the Arts chance for us
to celebrate the accomplishments of the arts community over the past year, and while we have the
mayors attention talk about the importance of arts and culture to the well being of the community.
In a city that s rich in ethnic diversity, has deep ties to it s past and its roots, that embraces a wide
range of artistic practice, and is looking for ways to support and nurture young and emerging artists in
the community, who better to speak you today than me a past middle aged white guy from Vancouver
who s working in an art form which hasn t fundamentally changed in the last 2500 years.
Mayor Bowman, You ve had quite the first year. There are must be a lot of interests competing for
your support, so we all appreciate that you re here, and we appreciate your stance on funding the
Winnipeg Arts Council; moving to raise funding levels up from $5 per capita to seven dollars per
capita. It s a good start. And while it doesn t get us close to the 19 dollars per capita of Toronto, or $42
in Calgary or 55 in Montreal, the 30 in Saskatoon or even the 47 in Vancouver, that city that I left, if
you add another two dollars and 44 cents to that 7, we will be on par with that other Canadian city

Julius Caesar s History And Contributions Of The Roman Empire
2. Octavian is Julius Caesar s great nephew but was named his adopted son in Julius Caesar will.
Octavian was able to gain power due to being named in Julius Caesar s will as his son. He was
originally the son of Julius Caesar s sister. His father Gaius Octavius was the first person in the family
that became a senator but passed away when Octavian was four years old. Octavius was able to
balance the empire, made the army smaller sized, and formed a Roman navy. He also held interest in
temple buildings which in turned he took on the repair all of the 82 temples and built more along with

rule out promiscuity. He very well also believed and supported literature. The Augustus of Prim Porta

the type ruler he created with his government with his stance and appearance. Octavian was very
important to Roman history and culture due to all the positive change and building of the Roman
empire. Aside from the reconstruction of temples and creating military forces he brought back peace

  • 2. Coming Of Age And Adolescence In The 21st Century INTRODUCTION The Encyclopedia of World Problems and Human Potential identifies that the current lack of rites of passage in modern, industrialised socities is a global problem, resulting in a serious breakdown in the process of maturing (Grimes 2000) for adolescents moving from childhood to adulthood, specifically. To move through adolescence in the modern, Western world is a highly individualised experience, meaning that it differs between each individual person and also that it is a largely solitary process; coming of age in the 21st century means learning to stand alone as a self sufficient person (Arnett, 1998) who is independently responsible for their own guidance and decision making among a wide range of possibilities (Arnett, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is said that high school graduation ceremonies most closely resemble the structure and function of a more traditional rites of passage ceremony in the modern world. However, the high school graduation ceremony does not prepare or initiate youth with the practical skills or discernments necessary to proceed successfully in living outside of the home (Hamitlon Hamilton, 2008); it is a superficial event that publically acknowledges a youth s supposed maturing but neglects to include, generally, any of the practical work of identity building that was a central facet of traditional ceremonies. High school graduation ceremonies serve only to signify an academic success or a coming of age, but the popular notion that maturity means to be academically successful or to reach a particular age alone misses the most important part of the process, which is that work is ... I understand that you did comprehensive examination of the cognitive in approval of the world s eternity. You came to the conclusion that it could not be disapproved or proven. I have come up with my own ideas and reasons to try to persuade that you could accept it. Even though it can t be proven that the world is eternal, the world could be eternal because Maimonides could accept that because he has no convincing or superseding reason to reject it. Maimonides you define God as the mere eternal thing and beforehand conception, he had existed alone. Conception ex nihilo does not merely mean that something came from nothing but insists that God does not demand a physical cause in creation. And conception de novo does not mean that God exists in period and space and picks a particular moment to onset His creation. This think constitutes a drastic separation amid the Creator and His conception merely God is eternal and He alone is accountable for creation. If you say God is eternal than as long as God exists than the world will exists therefore making it eternal as well. Time itself is one of these creations or a mishap of conception it is not eternal. • 4. Persuasive Essay On Modern Technology Technology, quite obviously, is all around us. That was exemplified by the research of Michigan born computer scientist, Bill Joy. In 1982, he co founded Sun Microsystems and was the chief scientist until 2003. He is the author of the world renowned article, Why the Future Doesn t Need Us. This article articulates Joy s worries over the development of modern technologies. This essay speaks of genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and robotics (GNR), which are threatening to make humans an endangered species. 21st century technologies, honestly, are dangerous. They should not be used to overpower the human populace. Joy had just begun to realize this in 1998, after a discussion with Ray Kurzweil, the deservedly famous inventor of the first reading machine for the blind and many other amazing things . Along with the Berkeley philosopher, John Searle, who studies consciousness, Kurzweil told the two about how the rate of improvement of technology would increase, and thus, sentient robots were in the realm of possibility. After reading an early draft of Kurzweil s book, The Age of Spiritual Machines: When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence, Joy s unease accelerated. There is a passage in the book by the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski. Joy did not agree with the seventeen year murderous rampage that the man went on, as one of his bombs had gravely injured one of Joy s friends, David Gelernter, who is a brilliant computer scientist. Although Joy was afraid for his life during ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has not been shy of spending money and laughing at the luxury tax if it meant making a contender. This summer, the Nets have been singing a different tune; making moves to save money and diminish expectations. Addition by Subtraction The biggest move the Nets made this offseason was letting go of All Star point guard Deron Williams. The Williams experiment did not work and it was rumored that he didn t get along with coaches and teammates. They believe Johnson will play better this season with Williams no longer on the team. Plus, taking back both Haywood and Varejao s contracts would have kept the team near the luxury tax line. If their gamble pays off and Johnson plays well, they can try again in moving him by the trade deadline for a better price. The End Game The Nets aren t going to win a championship this year. Telemachus is a different breed of hero compared to our modern day Superman and Batman. Telemachus, the son of a king, is often seen by the public. Being the son of a king has its benefits and its downfalls, he must be a person that the public can look to for solutions while his father is gone, but he also has power that others do not have. He has never been without his mother for an extended period of time, and he will be leaving her alone with suitors that have been asking for her hand in marriage. These suitors show no evidence throughout the book that they treat Penelope with any sort of respect. They also don t respect that Penelope still loves Odysseus. Telemachus has the right to be concerned about leaving his mother behind with these scoundrels. The last part of Telemachus s initiation is when he steps foot on the ship and sets sail. This is a huge leap into manhood because he is taking the initiative to find his dad. Once he has gotten on the ship, he is in charge of the ship. It is similar to being in charge of a small kingdom on the sea. There are only twenty men that make up the crew, but that is twenty people s lives that are in his hands. Lastly, the most important part of the initiation is setting sail from his homeland. From that point forward there would be no turning back. He was then officially on his own. ( Radiation Therapy for Cancer ) Radiation therapy affects only the selected area of treatment, whereas other treatments such as chemo therapy affects the entire body. Radiation therapy can be administered two different ways. The first method of administration is internally. Radiation is injected directly into the blood stream where it travels to the cancerous area. The other method of administering radiation therapy is externally. In this scene we see Juliet as a very naïve character, and in a later scene we see the complete antithesis of her character, where she is no longer a naïve young girl, who does everything her parents command her to do. We see her as an independent and sophisticated married woman. Act 1 Scene 5 is the scene set at the party at the Capulet s household. Juliet s mother introduces her to the County Paris, but before that, she sets eyes on Romeo, of the House of Montague. Romeo is not aware the Juliet is from the house of Capulet, he thinks she is exceptionally beautiful. He describes her as a snowy dove, trooping with crows , the dove symbolises purity, peace and is associated with the colour white, however crows symbolise hatred and are usually associated with the colour black. This can be linked to the theme of the feud which exists between the two households, Juliet is pure, but the rest of her house is filled with hatred and distrust. We then see Juliet s first move to disobey her mother, she leaves the hall of the ball with Romeo. We see the beginning of Juliet s journey from a child into an independent woman. • 14. Field Research Report On Buddhism Field Research Report Buddhism Angela Ginalick Fall 2014 I. Introduction Buddhism was started by a man named Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha ). He was born ca. 563 B.C.E. in Lumbini near the Himalayan foothills. Siddhartha Gautama was the warrior son of a king and queen. Legend has it that at his birth an astrologer predicted he would withdraw from the temporal life. His father, in an effort to prevent this, provided him with many luxuries and pleasures. As a young man, he once went on a series of four chariot rides where he first saw severe forms of suffering: old age, illness, and death (a corpse), as well as an ascetic renouncer, according to the Asia Society (2014). The Buddha had a difficult time reconciling his life compared to human suffering and abandoned his way of life leaving his wife and new son. He lived in the forest to the point of near starvation. Finally, he ate some food and sat down by a tree to meditate. According to some approximately six months later he attained Nirvana and discovered the true answers of suffering and the release from it. There are three basic principles of the Buddha s teachings: Sila, Samadhi, and Panna. Sila is the development of morality. Samadhi is the tool to purify the mind on order to see its nature, how to control it, how to develop it, and make use of it. • 18. The Definition Of Marriage And Family Relationships Essay What is the definition of marriage in the Bible? Better yet what is the definition of family in the Bible? In Scripture there are many families which could be studied in order to better answer this question, but some of the most prominent choices are Abraham s family, David s family, and Solomon s family. Each of these families in turn had their own sets of issues and problems, but there are also Biblical solutions to these problems which shall be address through the course of this paper. But, before this is done it is important to take note of what God s definitions are. To begin, I will start by explaining what my understanding of marriage and family relationships according to scripture are supposed to look like. Now, throughout both the Old Testament and New Testament many commandments are given to both children and parents. For instance, one of the most obvious commands given to children was, Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you, (Ex. 20:12, New International Version (NIV)). To honor someone means to treat him or her with respect and put them in a place of high esteem. Honor and respect means a child should not speak back to their parents, they should not curse out their parents in any way, and in general they should respect their parents wishes. But, going further than this Colossians 3:20 says, Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord, (Col. 3:20, NIV). Children ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Unlike our predecessors, the society is now affected by a manifold of dynamics which affect the ways of life and the living standards of people. The change of society has created the need for citizens to be more reliant on the politics of their country, the social conditions of the country, as well as the economic prosperity that may affect where they live. In this report, the living standards of citizens in different countries will be analyzed and shown. From observing the several countries in the world, an analysis will be made to discover what makes the living standards of one country higher than another. Several organizations are already performing this type of research, such as UNICEF; an organization which would rather promote happiness and wellness of citizens in a country rather than only considering the economical factors provided. Instead of solely judging a country by its GDP, or essentially its numerical productivity, there is numerical data for happiness, otherwise known as the Gross National Happiness1. This was created by the King of Bhutan, the leader of a communist country, and the GHP was measured by the social, economic, and political conditions within the country1. Used by major organizations now across the world including UNICEF, I also agree that a country should not only be measured by the economical standards as it is not the only ... • 21. Cognitive Disorders 1. The four major categories of cognitive disorders are: delirium which is an alteration in consciousness that manifest and progresses over a relatively short span of time where people have a decreased cognizance of their surrounding environment; dementia is an on going atrophy of brain function that is pronounced by damage of memory, bewilderment and inability to focus; amnesia marked by an indicative loss of memory, against no loss of other cognitive functions that appear in dementia; there is also an inclusion of other cognitive disorders not particularly specified that may otherwise not be categorized properly on their own. A broad assortment of factors may lead to cognitive disorders, that could also encompass other general medical conditions such as brain infections or head injuries. Cognitive disorders are normally assessed after physical and neurological inspection. Examples of these tests would be imaging exams, blood screening, liver function tests and thyroid analysis. Treatment options vary and depend on what kind of condition appears. Delirium for instance is normally treated adequately through analysis of the underlying cause, the prognosis however, is not as positive for patients suffering from dementia or amnesia. Common mental disorders such as depression, affect cognitive functions, through the process of memory as well perception and problem solving. As mentioned for the fourth category, other cognitive disorders make up this section. Berkman ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The policeman had no motive for not acting on the brothers; rather he was too ignorant to take them seriously. Like others in the town, he had no interest in the activities of two drunken brothers openly admitting to their plot. Divina Flor, another townswoman who knew of the brother s plot, let her personal issue with Santiago get in the way of her duty as a citizen of the town. Santiago s father, Ibrahim, had an affair with Divina s mother, Victoria Guzman. However, the affair turned into a love/hate relationship when the affection was over. Victoria knew Divina was destined for Santiago, but she did not want to let that happen. He was just like his father, a shit, (10). This hatred for the men of the Nasar family was passed on to Divina. She had so much repressed rage the morning of the crime......to embitter Santiago Nasar s breakfast (10). This personal hatred was the direct cause of Santiago s death. When Santiago came running to his front door with the Vicario brothers in chase, the door was locked.
