Swing Low, By Miriam Toews
Swing Low, a novel and memoir written by Miriam Toews, explores her father Mel Toews life leading
to his suicide. Mel Toews is difficult to fully understand as it stems from Miriam s view of her father;
however, she succeeds in portraying her father by convincing the readers he is narrating his own story
through a believable recapitulation of his life.
Before the memoir begins, the author clearly points out that she will be writing as her father while
retelling his life story after gathering information about his life. The prologue is the main reminder
that the memoir is written by the daughter about her father who had taken his life, and later on in the
epilogue as well. More importantly, the author takes away the surprise of the novel by mentioning her
father took his own life (Toews 1) which tells the readers exactly how the story will end. In spite of
revealing the ending, Toews uses suspense as a literary technique to pique the reader s curiosity and
investment by wondering what leads to his suicide. However with this fact brought out from the very
beginning, the reader focuses on the life Mel Toews leads to explain his spiral descent in depression.
Rather, through symbolic scenes such as the egg scene or the dream of finding a home, the author
presents eerie foreshadows implying the subject s aimlessness in the world he finds himself in. For
example, in the egg scene, he states [w]ho will keep [him] warm before [he] breaks? (89). The
quotation is a potential

Second World War Dbq Essay
In the days of the Second World War, the United States was thrusted into being the primary provider
of supplies whether it was food or steel. This presented many challenges; how would the U.S. truly get
out of the great depression? How would the country amply provide a work force in a world where
males dominated the labor industry, the same males that would go off to fight the war? To answer
these questions, we must look at several sources such as Roosevelt s famous fireside chats, how the
U.S. population at home aided the war effort and the role of minorities.
To begin, the American homefront was riddled with ways citizens did their part. This comprised
several different procedures. Victory gardens were planted all around the U.S. , these ... Show more

Rationing played a pivotal in U.S. success on the homefront.
The Homefront also had a distinct lack of a labor workforce as more and more troops left to fight. This
called upon women to fill in jobs they would otherwise never do. Also, minorities were thrusted in
positions which they had never been before due to racial segregation, Franklin D. Roosevelt said it
best in his fireside chat on october 12,1942. In some communities, employers dislike to employ
women. In others they are reluctant to hire Negroes. In still others, older men are not wanted. We can
no longer afford to indulge such prejudices or practices. Roosevelt had backed the need for no
discrimination in the labor force with executive order 8802, this order was composed in 1941 and
stated that there shall not be discrimination in defense industries. The result was 8 million women
stepping into the labor force, and by 1944 over 5 million African Americans worked to fuel the
American war machine. Unfortunately post World War Two brought the firing of many minorites who
were the first to be fired when cut backs had to be made to meet the non war economy of the U.S. The
Fair Employment Practices Commision which investigated racial discrimination in the workplace of
World War Two America disappeared directly after the war.
Unfortunately the homefront was not all roses

Victim Or Heroine Research Paper
Victim or Heroine? The relationship between opposing genders and species within literature is
interesting. Women are known for being the weaker link, the brutally murdered, the intentesly stalked.
One of the first to die and if they are kept around its usually because they fit the other half of a
romantic relationship with the heroine. However, while monsters often prey upon women, in modern
horror stories sometimes the women take on the roles of both victim and heroine. In this instense it is
usually because they are apart of a bigger play of events. The turbulent relationship between women
and monsters has been characterized by conflict. However, understanding what role the female
character is playing can be difficult. Women are shown to be weaker or even defenseless against their
preditor. Usually throughout the film, the woman learns to defend herself because she has to. Women

Throughout the film Freddy and Nancy have an interesting relationship. Freddy is known for being
sexually intrigued by his prey. Nancy is different than other female leads because she is so girly, most
of the female heroine subjects are very masculene. Nancy refuses to let Freddy defeat her, she also
like Laurie does not give up the fight. Final example, the well known vampire franchise Twilight. This
series is known for its female heroine Bella Swan. Even her name portrays her as dainty and feminine.
She is subject to a family; and later on a community of what essentially are monsters. Even deciding
to become one, Bella has to be the most tolerent female role. She falls in love with a vampire named
Edward Cullen controverally because Edward does not really give her much of a choice, and she
becomes part of his vampire family and together they battle other vampires. They also do increadibly
normal things like play baseball and go out to

Analysis of Characters in Ugly American by by Burdick and...
The next character I will mention is Honorable Gilbert MacWhite, who replaced Ambassador Sears in
Sarkhan. This character functioned in complete contrast to Sears. He understood the sensitivity of the
US mission in Sarkhan and how vulnerable the Sarkhanese government was to potential communist
influences. He also understood the communist threat and did not underestimate it. MacWhite s
understanding of the operational environment was clear from the beginning and made constant efforts
in understanding the people of Sarkhan.
MacWhite arrived in Sarkhan well versed on the customs, language, and threats faced by the country;
this aided him in everything that followed through his tour. Understanding the operational
environment is critical in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, MacWhite understood the need for legitimacy across the country and this became very evident
in his constant search for individuals who can provide a means for the Sarkhaneese to develop the
country by themselves. An example that comes to mind from the story is when he talked to Atkins in
order to develop a way for the people of Sarkhan to transfer water from the river, uphill, to the rice
paddies. The ability he provided to ensure attainable resources were available to the common people
legitimized the active concern of the USG towards the country as a whole. What I believe made the
legitimate action in this case was not the machine which was not completed at this point but the
legitimate concern of the Ambassador.
As depicted in the above paragraphs, MacWhite displayed three Special Operation Imperatives in a
clear manner: understanding the operational environment, anticipating long term effects, and ensuring
legitimacy and credibility. I agree that other imperatives such as operating with and through others and
ensuring long term sustainment could also be added to the list, but I wanted to provide a contrast to
the actions of Sears and those of MacWhite. His proactive and constant search to understand the
operational environment gave MacWhite the tools to better

effectiveness of a company from the United Kingdom. The Company is called, The Department of

The patients receiving the questionnaire would be for checking for knee joint pain after surgery.
Patients not receiving this survey would be having other services offered such as renal, x ray, etc. The
primary reason for this survey is to let the treating staff know where the problems are in the knee joint.
The survey appears to be brief and to the main points of what the specialist is looking for as far as the

The Benefits Of Transcendental Meditation
My initial impression of TM was great. As I am always looking for ways to expand my consciousness
and become enlightened I was very interested. The instructor had very positive things to say, and
appeared to be very enthusiastic about the practice. After seeing all of the celebrity endorsements for
the practice, I initially figured that there must be something worth while behind this form of
meditation.
Overall, I would say that my perspective on TM has changed. Had I not needed to go do homework, I
probably would have signed up for instruction the same day. However, the more fact checking and
researching that I did, the less interested and more skeptical I became. Reading the statistics about
adverse effects of the practice and biased test ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Does Arthur Miller Use Power In The Crucible
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a fictional version of the Salem Witch Trials that occurred from 1692
1693 in Massachusetts. Miller was a well known playwright in American theatre. In this play, power
can be used or abused, as the characters live their lives in this time period. After the first accusation
the town goes into a hysteric mood, for example when anything out of the social norm was performed
the girls accused witchery. At the start the girls just did it to save themselves. Abigail really never even
saw witchcraft, but the other girls just followed her lead. I saw Goody Hawkins with the Devil Abigail
(Miller 162). I saw Goody Bibbins with the Devil Betty (Miller 162). These texts show the
randomness of the accusations.

Protecting American Jobs Essay
Protecting American Jobs
For the past two decades Americans have been getting laid off because their jobs are being transferred
offshore. Advances in technology and low cost telecommunications now mean that a computer
programmer, data entry specialist, or help desk operator answering calls for a U.S. company can work
as easily from India or the Philippines as from Iowa and save parent companies some 30 percent to 70
percent in costs (Otterman, 2004). This poses the question should the government protect American
jobs by imposing stiff penalties on companies that transfer jobs offshore by outsourcing or
manufacturing. No, stiffer taxes are not going to significantly effect the number of jobs that are being
transferred off shore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consumers want the best quality at the lowest price and the investors want to see a high profit, so to
do that companies have to find the middle ground. Which means they have to find the best solution for
everyone even if it means outsourcing jobs offshore because it more cost effective for the company.
According to Jagdish N. Bhagwati, employing workers at lower cost allows U.S. companies to be
more efficient and productive, permitting them to create the same amount of goods with fewer
resources. In turn, this lowers the price of the goods in the United States, strengthening U.S.
companies and freeing workers for other tasks. The savings allows U.S. companies to stay afloat and
expand in a highly competitive global market (Otterman, 2004). Outsourcing is not always a bad, it is
a change, and change is what pushes both our economy and our nation forward.
Another good point that has been made is, the average global tax rate on multinational corporations is
about 27 percent, compared to 39 percent in the United States (Wolverson, 2011). Given this
information it would seem that instead of penalizing our multinational corporations for increasing
international trade, maybe the United States government should focus more on bring in multinational
corporations from other countries. This would not only create more jobs in the untied states to
compensate for the ones that are being lost overseas but also

Regeneration: The pulp of teeth repeatedly undergoes irreversible disease caused by caries, trauma,
congenital abnormalities, or as a complication of previous dental procedures (7). Endodontic therapy

long term outcomes (7,8). However, endodontic prognosis studies have conclusively shown that the
presence of pre operative infection, generally determined by lack of response to vitality tests and the
presence of a radiolucent periapical lesion, reduces the long term outcomes of treatment by about 15

cases remains favorable, the situation is more complicated incases with young immature teeth. Root
canal instrumentation, disinfection, and sealing are more technically difficult to performing these
cases (9 11). Perhaps more importantly, the tooth remains weak and is therefore susceptible to fracture
due to functional stresses or minor trauma, an outcome that has been determined to range from 28

Robert Pirsig s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values
Confronting crises of technological annihilation and personal madness, Robert Pirsig finds each to be
a manifestation of a deeper crisis of Reason. In response) he suggests an alternative to our current
paradigm of rationality, the art of motorcycle maintenance. By showing that our understanding and
performance derive from our emotional and evaluative commitments, he challenges the cultural
commonplace which construes subjective states as distortions of objective reality. In so doing, he
asserts that wholeness or sanity may be achieved only through passionate caring, and an awareness
and acceptance of how our emotions and values shape our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet whereas we are never left alone by our technology, we are increasingly lonely, alienated from our
deepest selves. For we have lost touch with our own feelings, being educated to ignore them in order
to function in a technological world. Like Bergman s intellectual illiterates, we are so uneducated
about our inner feelings that we only learn to talk about them when we break down, and have to be
repaired by the analyst, at the Group, or in the asylum. For, we learn, our feelings distort our objective
perceptions, and thus prevent us from functioning like our machines. In this vein, Andy Warhol wryly
recalls that he had always wanted to be like a machine, for then it was easier to get along with people.
We thus find ourselves fragmented, our feelings alienated from our world, our lives as well as our
literature being characterizable by T. S. Eliot s phrase, dissociation of sensibility.
Parallel to this public, cultural crisis of technologically induced fragmentation, Pirsig faces his own
personal crisis of fragmentation or madness. Some years earlier he had been declared clinically insane,
and underwent electro shock therapy to annihilate his mad personality. This earlier self, whom he now
calls Phaedrus, had gone mad as a result of a search for Truth which led him ultimately to repudiate
Reason itself.[1] Pursuing the ghost of reason through

In the modern democracy world, political game is no longer a game of one to many rather many to

This article addresses the role and the relationship of spin doctoring with other players take part in
mass media, with two case studies demonstrated: one being successful and one being unsuccessful
spin. The successful spin will be shown using the example of the Islamic State Group in Syria and Iraq
(ISIS). On the other hand, the unsuccessful one will be using the handling case of the missing plane,
Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. A summary of the key concepts relevant to this article will also be

The term spin doctor consists of a symbolic relationship with journalists and mass media. Both need
each other in order to generate and disseminate information within the media machine. A good spin
team knows what works is the best to hook the intended audiences, be it a mass audience or the

of hero archetype attributes. She is descended from a powerful warrior family, embarks on an epic
journey from her home, is willing to sacrifice herself and possesses supernatural strength and combat
skills. She has grit. Yet, she fights not just for material riches or eternal glory, but for righteousness

Designing For Many Architects And Designers
Designing for people is a challenge for many architects and designers. The idea of creating something
innovative, beautiful or in this case, sculptural, which stands the test of time, is ideal for many
designers. But what happens when a building doesn t meet the needs of its occupants? What happens
when, what is considered, a magnificent architectural feat begins to leak, grow mold and become a
safety hazard?
The Ray and Maria Stata Center for Computer, Information and Intelligence Sciences (also referred to
as Building 32) is housed on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology s (MIT) historic Building 20
site. Between 1946 and 1948, Building 20 functioned primarily as a temporary facility specifically for
wartime outdoor training exercises, and as a research laboratory for war related innovations. Building
20 continued to function as a research facility until its 1998 demolition. Architect, Frank Gehry was
selected, from a pool of sixteen firms, to design the new building after funding became available
through a donation from Ray and Maria Stata in 1998. The Institute sought a daring design that set
them a part and portrayed the school as the best. The criteria initially established by MIT in 1989
proposed buildings that wrapped around the exterior of the site, opening the interior space to the
campus. This didn t quite match Gehry s vision. Instead, Gehry challenged MIT s traditional bar
buildings by dividing the building mass into clusters, connecting the interiors

The American Cowboy
The American Cowboy The cowboys of the frontier have long captured the imagination of the
American public. Americans, faced with the reality of an increasingly industrialized society, love the
image of a man living out in the wilderness fending for himself against the dangers of the unknown.
By the year 1900 there were few renegade Indians left in the country and the vast expanse of open
land to the west of the Mississippi was rapidly filling with settlers. Cowboys represented a major part
of the frontier spirit and Americans were eager to keep the romanticism of the west alive. Throughout
the 20th century, western themed movies and books have been extremely popular. The cowboys of the

Goodnight and Loving used the trail in 1866 and 1867 but stage lines, emigrants, and drovers made
frequent use of the trail until almost 1900. Charles Goodnight ran the Ja Cattle Ranch after his herding
days. The ranch was very successful and at one point contained more than 10,000 cattle. Goodnight
was a good man who cared about maintaining the beauty and life of the frontier. In 1878 he saved four
buffalo calves and by 1916 his 200 buffalo represented one tenth of the total number of buffalo in the
United States. Most of the legend surrounding Goodnight and Loving regard the unusual

The Strategies The Meiji Government Used to Achieve Economic Development?
The Meiji government during the 1880 s created both an institutional and constitution structure that
allowed Japan in the coming decades to be a stabile and industrializing country. Two major policies
and strategies that reinforced stability and economic modernization in Japan were the creation of a
national public education system and the ratification of the Meiji constitution.
Both these aided in stability and thus economic growth.
The creation of a national education system aided in creating stability because it indoctrinated youth in
the ideas of loyalty, patriotism, and obedience. Japan s education system at first stressed free thought

The Japanese education system following the Rescript on Education served primarily to teach people
what to think and not how to think; and as
Edwin Reischauer stated, quot;Japan pioneered in the modern totalitarian technique of using the
educational system for indoctrination and was in fact decades ahead of countries like Germany in
perfecting these techniques. quot; Japan s education system was a tool in creating for Japan a reliable
citizenry who respected the government and had the knowledge to act as quot;technically efficient
clogs quot; in the new industries and administration that an industrializing state created.
The ratification of the Meiji constitution drafted in the summer of
1887 and signed into law in 1889 helped create a stable constitutional order in
Japan. The constitution was a gift of the emperor to the people and was made up of a complicated set
of checks and balances between the emperor, his cabinet, and the Diet. The constitution although it
granted voting rights to only one percent of the population in Japan was well received by the people
and played a critical role in lending legitimacy to the oligarchy (Genro) who ran the government.
Before the constitution the Genro had little basis in theory for their continued rule other then they
spoke for the emperor. But the constitution with its elections and bicameral diet lender legitimacy to
the rule of the oligarchy. The constitution also brought Japan at least in the minds of the
oligarchy

Angelica Schuyler s Duel Against Inequality
Angelica Schuyler s Duel Against Inequality
A key aspect in which Hamilton brings to light is the values of inequality. Women, while are making
strides, they are still not equal to men. As seen in Hamilton women are just as capable to perform the
same job as men and, in many instances, do the job better. Whether it is inequality with slaves, even
leading to some hypocrisy, or with women, some of the key values within Hamilton are revolve
around the fact of equality. In the play, if all people where believed as equal, some of the role
characters such as Angelica, could play a larger factor in the play.
To begin let s talk about gender equality. This is a large issue, one that which has plagued America for
centuries. Angelica is called by experts to be the smartest character within the play. This is somewhat
astounding because she is facing some of the brightest men in history, including Burr, George
Washington, and Alexander Hamilton himself. In the play, there is a common motif of My Shot . In
fact, one of the songs in the play itself is called My Shot . This particular song speaks to how
Hamilton as well as other character are not going to squander their shot at making America great and
free from British rule. In the song Hamilton sings I am not throwing away my shot! I am not throwing
away my shot! Hey yo, I m just like my country I m young, scrappy and hungry And I m not throwing
away my shot! (Miranda, My Shot ). However, is this common motif given to ALL

Graph Investigation
What features of the graph would you need for the expected proportionality to be verified? In other
words, what should the graph look like to verify the inverse square law? (2 marks) The inverse square
law states, that the intensity of the luminosity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance
from the source. The graph would require features such as; evidence that the increase in distance away
from the source results in the reduction of light exposure as well as, the contrast between the
ascending distance and descending LUX, in which forms an X within the graph in order to verify the
proportionality expected. This can be seen on the graph, when the distance d from the source is

The classroom, although the blinds were drawn, allowed a large amount of light in; from the cracks in
the blinds and the glare from the uncovered windows connecting to the hallway. This may have
affected our results as the beam of light being projected out of the light box may have lost its intensity;
also resulting in the light metre picking up the surrounding light as well as the dull light beam.
Ultimately, we may have collected inaccurate data due to the excess of light. The instrument used to
measure the apparent magnitude of the star (light box beam) in our practical, had no way of displaying
if it was perpendicular to the desk. We noticed whilst using the light metre, a slight tilt of the
instrument could increase or decrease the amount of light being detected, changing the figure

challenging to keep it at the same angle for every increment. The change of angle and light detected

The Effects Of Recycling On The American People Today
When one hears the word recycle, they imagine an image of a trashcan with green arrows. One may
think that throwing plastic and paper products into a bin will save the planet. Not many know the
process of what happens behind the scenes. Others are unaware of its effects on America. There exists
proof that its lasting effects are beneficial. This may sound too good to be true and there are many
questions asked. How does recycling work, and what are its effects on the American people today?
These questions address the process of recycling, the pros versus cons of its cost, and its
environmental impact in America. Recycling has been going on for millennia. During ancient Rome,
people would recycle bronze coins and melt them down into a statue. In times of war, countries would
gather all of their metal together and recycle them into weapons. History has continually utilized
recycling for gain. Most products of recycling before the 90 s consisted of waste material, glass, and
plastics. After that time, electronics were brought into the mix. Recently, recycling itself has become
more popularized in the last 30 years. There are various ads on billboards, television, and the Internet
about it. Recycling has shown through history that it is beneficial. As people become more aware of
their environment and its dangers, they can start to understand and do something to help. Recycling
happens with many different kinds of materials. According to the EPA, Paper and paperboard account

Analysis Of The Book Follow The Drinking Gourd
And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back,
sealed with seven seals. Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to
open the scroll and to loose its seals? Revelation 5:1 2 (New King James Version)
During an African American history class, the book, Follow the Drinking Gourd, by Francis Gaither
(1940), referenced imagery and symbolism of the American slaves who sought freedom using the
Underground Railroad as the link from south to north. The gourd was the wooden ladle used by the
slaves to dip water. Gaither writes, Various elements from the song and the Parks account describing it
are woven into the novel. For example, looming overhead ...swung the Great Dipper the Drinking
Gourd... The stars of the Big Dipper pointed the slaves to the north. Gaither continues, All of the
characters in this story are fictional except Peg leg Joe, a real person associated in Southern legend
with the Drinking Gourd song and with that part of Alabama where it was once current. Listening to
the song used, it repeats itself for the reader to understand that the result is freedom.
The preceding story is a similarity to the book of Revelation. Full of imagery and symbolism to reflect
the situation at hand. For the modern day reader, the book can seem like a 1000 word jigsaw puzzle.
Society today does not use images and symbols as times past. During the time, John remained

Quit Day 5 Steps To Quit Smoking
Tanner Brooks
Mrs. Galbraith
English 101
9/15/2016
Last month Jon saw a commercial on T.V. about the harmful effects smoking has on the body. The
commercial showed how smoking can lead from things as minor as bad breath and yellow teeth to
something as severe as lung cancer. Jon, a frequent smoker, decided he would put down his cigarettes
for good. Jon threw his last pack of cigarettes in the garbage that day. Today though, Jon is still
smoking. He only went two days without smoking and began to experience great withdrawals. Jon
thought he had to buy another pack just to feel better. Jon saw the commercial again today and decided
that he could not do this alone; he needed help. Jon called the number on the commercial and began to
speak to a specialist who gave him great advice on how to quit his habit for good. The specialist told
Jon that there were five steps he needed to follow in order to start his journey to quit smoking. Set a
quit date, stay busy, avoid smoking triggers, stay positive, and ask for help from others ( Quit Day:5
Steps ) The first step in the process to smoking is to set a quit date. Setting a quit date requires ...

Quitting smoking is a very hard habit to break, and a good attitude is imperative to one s success. In
order for one to succeed in quitting smoking they must take each day one day at a time and not think
of quitting as forever. By living in the moment and paying attention to today the time will add up and
in turn will help one stay more positive. Another way to stay positive is to reward one selves for
quitting. According to Text from Medline Plus s article How to stop smoking: Dealing with cravings

The Thesis of The Patriot Act s Impact on the Government s Ability to Conduct Electronic Domestic
Surveillance of Ongoing Cosmetic Communications by Nathan C. Henderson outlines that the
American populous, more specifically the representatives said populous elects, should proceed with
hesitancy when approving laws that allow privacy to be breached in the name of national security.
Henderson asserts, in the article s thesis, that The Patriot Act opens the door to the United States
Government to breaching the privacy and extraneously surveilling citizens with no connection to
terrorism. Moreover, the article maintains that, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Henderson, in the article, remarks on the tremendous power, and insufficient accountability, that
domestically operating law enforcement (ranging from local police to the FBI) are given under the
surveillance clauses of The Patriot Act. Specifically, it is stated that law enforcement conducting
domestic surveillance no longer [have] the corresponding obligation to demonstrate that the target
actually uses the device being tapped (Henderson, 197). This is to say that, when submitting a request
for domestic surveillance, the inquisitor of said request no longer has to supply proof that the device
that would be tapped is actually in possession or use of the surveillance target. The Patriot Act s
revisions to electronic surveillance law are a staunch proliferation of already liberal surveillance
requirements in place before 2001 under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (commonly
abbreviated as FISA); wherein surveillance restrictions were already relaxed. In fact, in a twenty four
year period (from 1978 to 2002) only two requests for surveillance were ever rejected by FISA courts

Donald Trump s Debate Analysis

voters, as well as facebook and the moderators. The television programs following the debate tend to
spin the debate in favor of their candiate. I tuned in to Hannity on Fox News on Monday following the

Todd continues to interrupt a sign of a bias not allowing Pemce to express opinions that he disagree.

Living the Christian Life, According to Peter Essay
First Peter has been called by some the epistle of hope. The book of First Peter is a very encouraging
and also doctrinal text for Christians today. It tells us to have courage in our daily lives as Christians
and gives us reasons why we should have perseverance. First Peter also tells us how we should treat
each other in our relationships as brothers and sisters in Christ. As we strive to live with God by our
side, this book also tells us that suffering will occur in our lives and how we should deal with those
struggles. This book of only 105 verses is filled with words that give a remarkable sense of hope.
The authorship of First Peter seems very obvious, but according to commentary from Edward Gordon

Most of the writing echoes Peter s own personal experiences during the apostolic times and with that
the conclusion that he must have been the primary author of First Peter.
According to Gordon Fee, the first epistle of Peter was written around 64 65 A.D. from the city of
Rome. Peter mentions Babylon in his writing, but this is actually more of a nickname of some sort for
Rome. He could have been referring to the ancient city of Babylon, but this is most likely not the case.
Babylon and Rome are very similar in that they were both worldly cities undergoing persecution of
Christians, but Peter is probably referring to Rome as the Babylon of the day.
The recipients of First Peter were mostly Gentile believers in five provinces of Asia Minor: Pontus,
Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia (Fee 402). Paul or some of his workers had founded churches
in some of these areas, and the churches addressed were made up of mostly Gentiles, but also some
Jewish members too. There are a few comments made by Peter implying a Gentile audience in regards
to their previous impure lives when they lived in ignorance, but there are also some Jewish terms used
that could imply that these Gentiles could have been Jewish proselytes (Kelcy 11).
Peter speaks to his audience with encouragement about suffering

  • 2. Swing Low, By Miriam Toews Swing Low, a novel and memoir written by Miriam Toews, explores her father Mel Toews life leading to his suicide. Mel Toews is difficult to fully understand as it stems from Miriam s view of her father; however, she succeeds in portraying her father by convincing the readers he is narrating his own story through a believable recapitulation of his life. Before the memoir begins, the author clearly points out that she will be writing as her father while retelling his life story after gathering information about his life. The prologue is the main reminder that the memoir is written by the daughter about her father who had taken his life, and later on in the epilogue as well. More importantly, the author takes away the surprise of the novel by mentioning her father took his own life (Toews 1) which tells the readers exactly how the story will end. In spite of revealing the ending, Toews uses suspense as a literary technique to pique the reader s curiosity and investment by wondering what leads to his suicide. However with this fact brought out from the very beginning, the reader focuses on the life Mel Toews leads to explain his spiral descent in depression. Rather, through symbolic scenes such as the egg scene or the dream of finding a home, the author presents eerie foreshadows implying the subject s aimlessness in the world he finds himself in. For example, in the egg scene, he states [w]ho will keep [him] warm before [he] breaks? (89). The quotation is a potential ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Second World War Dbq Essay In the days of the Second World War, the United States was thrusted into being the primary provider of supplies whether it was food or steel. This presented many challenges; how would the U.S. truly get out of the great depression? How would the country amply provide a work force in a world where males dominated the labor industry, the same males that would go off to fight the war? To answer these questions, we must look at several sources such as Roosevelt s famous fireside chats, how the U.S. population at home aided the war effort and the role of minorities. To begin, the American homefront was riddled with ways citizens did their part. This comprised several different procedures. Victory gardens were planted all around the U.S. , these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rationing played a pivotal in U.S. success on the homefront. The Homefront also had a distinct lack of a labor workforce as more and more troops left to fight. This called upon women to fill in jobs they would otherwise never do. Also, minorities were thrusted in positions which they had never been before due to racial segregation, Franklin D. Roosevelt said it best in his fireside chat on october 12,1942. In some communities, employers dislike to employ women. In others they are reluctant to hire Negroes. In still others, older men are not wanted. We can no longer afford to indulge such prejudices or practices. Roosevelt had backed the need for no discrimination in the labor force with executive order 8802, this order was composed in 1941 and stated that there shall not be discrimination in defense industries. The result was 8 million women stepping into the labor force, and by 1944 over 5 million African Americans worked to fuel the American war machine. Unfortunately post World War Two brought the firing of many minorites who were the first to be fired when cut backs had to be made to meet the non war economy of the U.S. The Fair Employment Practices Commision which investigated racial discrimination in the workplace of World War Two America disappeared directly after the war. • 4. Victim Or Heroine Research Paper Victim or Heroine? The relationship between opposing genders and species within literature is interesting. Women are known for being the weaker link, the brutally murdered, the intentesly stalked. One of the first to die and if they are kept around its usually because they fit the other half of a romantic relationship with the heroine. However, while monsters often prey upon women, in modern horror stories sometimes the women take on the roles of both victim and heroine. In this instense it is usually because they are apart of a bigger play of events. The turbulent relationship between women and monsters has been characterized by conflict. However, understanding what role the female character is playing can be difficult. Women are shown to be weaker or even defenseless against their preditor. Usually throughout the film, the woman learns to defend herself because she has to. Women are not normally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Analysis of Characters in Ugly American by by Burdick and... The next character I will mention is Honorable Gilbert MacWhite, who replaced Ambassador Sears in Sarkhan. This character functioned in complete contrast to Sears. He understood the sensitivity of the US mission in Sarkhan and how vulnerable the Sarkhanese government was to potential communist influences. He also understood the communist threat and did not underestimate it. MacWhite s understanding of the operational environment was clear from the beginning and made constant efforts in understanding the people of Sarkhan. MacWhite arrived in Sarkhan well versed on the customs, language, and threats faced by the country; this aided him in everything that followed through his tour. Finally, MacWhite understood the need for legitimacy across the country and this became very evident in his constant search for individuals who can provide a means for the Sarkhaneese to develop the country by themselves. An example that comes to mind from the story is when he talked to Atkins in order to develop a way for the people of Sarkhan to transfer water from the river, uphill, to the rice paddies. The ability he provided to ensure attainable resources were available to the common people legitimized the active concern of the USG towards the country as a whole. What I believe made the legitimate action in this case was not the machine which was not completed at this point but the legitimate concern of the Ambassador. As depicted in the above paragraphs, MacWhite displayed three Special Operation Imperatives in a clear manner: understanding the operational environment, anticipating long term effects, and ensuring legitimacy and credibility. I agree that other imperatives such as operating with and through others and ensuring long term sustainment could also be added to the list, but I wanted to provide a contrast to the actions of Sears and those of MacWhite. His proactive and constant search to understand the operational environment gave MacWhite the tools to better ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Overall, I would say that my perspective on TM has changed. Had I not needed to go do homework, I probably would have signed up for instruction the same day. • 8. How Does Arthur Miller Use Power In The Crucible The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a fictional version of the Salem Witch Trials that occurred from 1692 1693 in Massachusetts. Miller was a well known playwright in American theatre. In this play, power can be used or abused, as the characters live their lives in this time period. After the first accusation the town goes into a hysteric mood, for example when anything out of the social norm was performed the girls accused witchery. At the start the girls just did it to save themselves. Abigail really never even saw witchcraft, but the other girls just followed her lead. I saw Goody Hawkins with the Devil Abigail (Miller 162). • 9. Protecting American Jobs Essay Protecting American Jobs For the past two decades Americans have been getting laid off because their jobs are being transferred offshore. Advances in technology and low cost telecommunications now mean that a computer programmer, data entry specialist, or help desk operator answering calls for a U.S. company can work as easily from India or the Philippines as from Iowa and save parent companies some 30 percent to 70 percent in costs (Otterman, 2004). This poses the question should the government protect American jobs by imposing stiff penalties on companies that transfer jobs offshore by outsourcing or manufacturing. No, stiffer taxes are not going to significantly effect the number of jobs that are being transferred off shore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consumers want the best quality at the lowest price and the investors want to see a high profit, so to do that companies have to find the middle ground. Which means they have to find the best solution for everyone even if it means outsourcing jobs offshore because it more cost effective for the company. According to Jagdish N. Bhagwati, employing workers at lower cost allows U.S. companies to be more efficient and productive, permitting them to create the same amount of goods with fewer resources. In turn, this lowers the price of the goods in the United States, strengthening U.S. companies and freeing workers for other tasks. The savings allows U.S. companies to stay afloat and expand in a highly competitive global market (Otterman, 2004). Outsourcing is not always a bad, it is a change, and change is what pushes both our economy and our nation forward. Another good point that has been made is, the average global tax rate on multinational corporations is about 27 percent, compared to 39 percent in the United States (Wolverson, 2011). Given this information it would seem that instead of penalizing our multinational corporations for increasing international trade, maybe the United States government should focus more on bring in multinational corporations from other countries. This would not only create more jobs in the untied states to compensate for the ones that are being lost overseas but also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Clinical Indications for Pulp Regeneration: The pulp of teeth repeatedly undergoes irreversible disease caused by caries, trauma, congenital abnormalities, or as a complication of previous dental procedures (7). Endodontic therapy aims to an effective and specific treatment for the irreversibly diseased pulp, with preferable short and long term outcomes (7,8). However, endodontic prognosis studies have conclusively shown that the presence of pre operative infection, generally determined by lack of response to vitality tests and the presence of a radiolucent periapical lesion, reduces the long term outcomes of treatment by about 15 20%, compared with cases with vital pulp (8). While the prognosis of endodontic treatment in these cases remains favorable, the situation is more complicated incases with young immature teeth. Root canal instrumentation, disinfection, and sealing are more technically difficult to performing these cases (9 11). Perhaps more importantly, the tooth remains weak and is therefore susceptible to fracture due to functional stresses or minor trauma, an outcome that has been determined to range from 28 77%, depending on the degree of root maturation (13).This distinction is important, given that calcium hydroxide is rarely used long term today, because of the availability of apexification techniques that rely on these of ... Robert Pirsig s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values Confronting crises of technological annihilation and personal madness, Robert Pirsig finds each to be a manifestation of a deeper crisis of Reason. In response) he suggests an alternative to our current paradigm of rationality, the art of motorcycle maintenance. By showing that our understanding and performance derive from our emotional and evaluative commitments, he challenges the cultural commonplace which construes subjective states as distortions of objective reality. In so doing, he asserts that wholeness or sanity may be achieved only through passionate caring, and an awareness and acceptance of how our emotions and values shape our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet whereas we are never left alone by our technology, we are increasingly lonely, alienated from our deepest selves. For we have lost touch with our own feelings, being educated to ignore them in order to function in a technological world. Like Bergman s intellectual illiterates, we are so uneducated about our inner feelings that we only learn to talk about them when we break down, and have to be repaired by the analyst, at the Group, or in the asylum. For, we learn, our feelings distort our objective perceptions, and thus prevent us from functioning like our machines. In this vein, Andy Warhol wryly recalls that he had always wanted to be like a machine, for then it was easier to get along with people. We thus find ourselves fragmented, our feelings alienated from our world, our lives as well as our literature being characterizable by T. S. Eliot s phrase, dissociation of sensibility. The idea of creating something innovative, beautiful or in this case, sculptural, which stands the test of time, is ideal for many designers. But what happens when a building doesn t meet the needs of its occupants? What happens when, what is considered, a magnificent architectural feat begins to leak, grow mold and become a safety hazard? The Ray and Maria Stata Center for Computer, Information and Intelligence Sciences (also referred to as Building 32) is housed on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology s (MIT) historic Building 20 site. Between 1946 and 1948, Building 20 functioned primarily as a temporary facility specifically for wartime outdoor training exercises, and as a research laboratory for war related innovations. Building 20 continued to function as a research facility until its 1998 demolition. Architect, Frank Gehry was selected, from a pool of sixteen firms, to design the new building after funding became available through a donation from Ray and Maria Stata in 1998. The Institute sought a daring design that set them a part and portrayed the school as the best. The criteria initially established by MIT in 1989 proposed buildings that wrapped around the exterior of the site, opening the interior space to the campus. This didn t quite match Gehry s vision. The Meiji government during the 1880 s created both an institutional and constitution structure that allowed Japan in the coming decades to be a stabile and industrializing country. The constitution was a gift of the emperor to the people and was made up of a complicated set of checks and balances between the emperor, his cabinet, and the Diet. The constitution although it granted voting rights to only one percent of the population in Japan was well received by the people and played a critical role in lending legitimacy to the oligarchy (Genro) who ran the government.
