A natural style is
grammatical and lexical
The main purpose is to convey
information and convince the
reader.
Levels of translation
Textual Level
You transpose the SL grammar
(clauses and groups)into TL
The text is the base label. Here it is
called the level of literal translation
Reverential Level
Greatest possible correspondence,
referentially and pragmatically
The referential level deals with
content.
The message, or semantics of the
text play a major role
Colloquial
meanings are tied
to fix phrase
Technical meaning
are the worst
translation traps
Most nouns, verbs,
or adjectives can be
used figuratively
and can have
figurative meaning
The SL and TL
words don’t usually
have the same
semantic range
The translation of lexis
The unit of translation
 Presenting an object and what it
does and why is affected
The sentence is the basic unit of thought
The sentence is the first unit of

It allows the translator

 False friends (cognate words)
 Participles, infinitives and
nominalizations
 old-fashioned or lofty TL diction
