Dukes v. Wal-Mart Essay
Dukes v. Wal Mart Stores, Inc. is a legal battle concerning whether or not the company engaged
willfully in gender based discrimination. Underlying causes, organizational culture and ethical
issues will be examined in determining how the largest private employer in the United States
could have fallen prey to unfair labor practices. In 1999, women constituted 72% of Wal Mart s
hourly employees, but only 33% of its managerial employees (Bhatnagar, 2004). This fact and
many others are the reasons many people allege that Wal Mart has unfair labor practices. The

Employee Cleo Page actually experienced the effects of Wal Mart s unethical labor practices.
Ms. Page began working for Wal Mart as a cashier in one of their super centers in Tulsa, OK
making $6.50/hr. Page resigned from her job three years later from a store in California where
she was making $10/hr. Over the three years of employment, she received above standard
evaluations, but despite her desire for advancement, she was passed over twice for promotions
by less qualified male applicants. Page had also encountered other women who had similar
experiences, some who were in the same position for eight years. Three years of earning low
wages adversely affected Page s financial situation. She had little savings and as a result, she lost
her house in California in addition to the foster children she was caring for. Page declared that she
would not have lost her home and children if she had been given the well deserved promotion. The
promotion came with many great incentives and better bonuses. This alone would have improved
her financial situation. Wal Mart is the largest retail store in the United States. The root cause of the
problem with Wal Mart is that they try to increase their profits by minimizing their costs. Many
internal policies are used to maintain this philosophy. First and foremost is the strong
organizational culture that is dictated from the home offices. Store level managers receive
discipline ranging from written

What Is The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
The great pacific garbage patch has been known to have a great effect on the oceanic wildlife.

would them eating all the plastics and trash that is thrown into the ocean affecting them but it also
affects us. We are the ones who tend to eat fishand many animals from the ocean which means
that in some way we end up with the trash in our bodies. I want to understand how a fish and a

Descriptive Essay On The Mountains
Going and taking micro adventures to the mountains which were fairly close to my house was a
bit of a semi common thing, however going with only friends of mine was a thing I didn t do at
all. When the suggestion to go up by my friend Alex was made, Jesse and I quickly agreed to go
along with this plan. We then proceeded to make our way to the mountain and as we were driving
up I decidedto chime in and make a suggestion, saying We should climbup from the base of the
waterfall everybody else quickly agreed since that seemed to be a nice little leisure activity for a
group of teenagers. With the weather slowly warming melting the snow on the mountains
causing water flow the scenery was just gorgeous, with many rocks having a bright reflective
look caused by the sun and water interacting. This scenery was just perfect for a climb up the fall.
As we climbed we all took notice of just how pretty the mountain was. Seeing trees, rocks, water
spiders, and many other things we don t see every single day. As we continued up the mountain
we eventually got this amazing area with some more reflective brown gorgeous rocks that were
similar to a bunch of tiny steps. With all the water running down the rocks my dark brown
Sperry s I decided to wear started to show why they were called boat shoes this is because they
were quite good at sticking to surfaces without slipping. Even though highly unorthodox with
my shoes for some reason they seemed to work quite well except for coming untied more times
than I would have enjoyed. As we continued to climb we took a few group pictures as well as
making a fair amount of jokes to help ease our minds off of the physical work we were putting
into climbing up this mountain. After we climbed up for about fifteen minutes much of the
rocks that had places for our feet to go into and cradle providing full support were gone and
being left with solely smooth rocks that if you wanted you could slide down with relative ease.
So the rate at which we were scaling these rocks had to slow, however not terribly but our speed
was crippled by being a little more cognizant and careful. Never the less we continued to climb up,
eventually a few more these rocksteps showed up and of course we

Employee Selection
Individual Research Essay
(2) Describe the different employee selection methods and specify which work best for different
jobs.
Employees form the basis of a successful organisation and the abilities and behavior of employees
can vary the performance of an organisation significantly. Due to the fact that respective jobs
require specific sets of skills or attributes, selections are essential in ensuring that the most suitable
candidates are hired. Selection refers to the process of assessing candidates by various means and
making a choice followed by an offer of employment (Graham, 1998, p.206). It is often thought of
as an integral part of human resource management within an organization, which allows firms to
gain a competitive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From an economic perspective, the subsequent costs of occupational fraud include a reduction of
stock prices and loss of employment. These economic costs are exemplified by the 5% of revenue
lost per annum from every average Canadian organisation as a result of employment fraud
(Koletar, 2003). According to Herman, a positive correlation exists between the degree to which a
candidate could be in a position to cause harm to others, colleagues, or the organisation and that of a
reference check (Herman, 1993). For example, public servants and jobs that necessitate the
handling of inordinate amounts of money would warrant a background check, as the risk of
financial losses or damage to government organization reputations are higher.
Interviews remain a widely used selection technique in contemporary industries despite the relative
unreliability of this method. Dipboye reports that approximately 70% of organizations in the United
States utilize interviews as the main selection strategy in both promotion and recruitment ( Dipboye,
1992). A selection interviewcan be broadly delineated as a dialogue initiated by one or persons to
gather information and evaluate the qualifications of an applicant for employment (Dipboye, 1992).
The exclusion of other specific qualifications such as interpersonal skills, personal motivations and
career objectives is apparent in this definition,

How Did Monarchs Influence The Tudor Period
From nine days to forty five years, the reigns of the monarchs during the Tudor period were
different and impactful. This period in England between 1485 and 1603 was home to many of
the great monarchs, nobles, and civilians of the world. The monarchs in Tudor England shaped
the period that is known so well today for its culture and power. They controlled the religion,
military, and culture in a way that was unrivaled by anyone in their time. The monarchs shaped the
Tudor period into a time remembered for culture, war, and religion in a way that nobles and
civilians could not match. The Tudor period of England was home to many monarchs that each

John Waters Film Techniques
Director John Waters is mostly regarded as making films subjected to shock value or are in poor
taste and are mainly there to make a person laugh or over exaggerate the roles of actors and
actresses at this time, but they had also stretched boundaries in which case that the censors didn
t whether or not to classify his earlier films as pornography. John has a style closer towards
formalism. His scripts weren t as detailed as say Hitchcock and they were mostly a spur of the
moment type deal. John started making films when he was about 16 and his grandmother gave
him an old camcorder. He shot mainly in 8 or 16 mm films. In the mid 60s to early 70s, he would
make films with his childhood friends and would mainly star them, but would eventually amass

He did play more than just female roles, but mainly his roles were lead female roles. John likes
to use the weirdest and foulest types of people in his films and likes to use similar subject matter.
What was considered grotesque and shocking back in the mid 60s and early 70s to a group of
young catholic teenagers were primarily a huge part in the plots of his films at the time which
would be anything adhering to the realm of homosexuality or sin in general. Pink Flamingos
(1972) was about Divine and her family verses another group of horrid individuals for the title of
the filthiest people alive. If John were to still be making films today, he would probably be using
the same subject matter, but with a modern twist. His film Hairspray in 1988 was surprisingly his
first PG rated film. A short essay titled The Nicest Kids in Town that John wrote for his 1981

The Character Of Lonnie Smith In Walker Percy s Dialogues
From the time he was a boy, he had the heart of an elder (Gregory 1). For St. Gregory the Great,
St. Benedict was not only a role model Benedictine monk, but the man of God (Gregory 7). The
Father of Western Monasticism lived a detached life from the world, and he only made his way
back to public life because of God s Will. Throughout his Dialogues, St. Gregory portrays
Benedict as a man who embraces an austere life, yet is content and happy. About 1400 years later,
another Catholic writer, Walker Percy, authored a book with a familiar story; The Moviegoer
illustrates one character, Lonnie Smith, who is the only happy character compared to several
others. After outlining St. Benedict s philosophy of life, I argue that Lonnie is happy (unlike the
other characters in the novel) because he, like St. Benedict, recognizes the finitude of earthly affairs
and fixes his gaze upon Heavenly matters.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like any other human being, St. Benedict knows that he can attain instant gratification and
temporary happiness through a hedonistic lifestyle; however, in his wisdom, he also understands
that pleasure and money are fleeting. Gregory adds, While he was on this earth he could have
indulged freely, but despised the glory of the world as a faded bloom (Gregory 1). In a similar
fashion, Benedict sees how the glory of the world, that is, political power and success, is short lived
and never permanent; dabbling in these concerns is neither worth his time nor

It is a little harder to tell the shape on this one because I didn t get a clearer picture under oil

The Pros And Cons Of Body Cameras
1.Introduction and Thesis
Body cameras are used to record police actions and communication with a citizen. They can
ensure the safety of the public. Body cameras also establishes trust among the public by keeping
police officers and people aware and accountable of their actions. Police officers wearing the
cameras can help to decrease crimes and make the neighborhoods a much safer place to live. The
protection and security of body cameras has had a great impact on the lives in the community and it
should continue to be used.
2.Background Information
When recording an incident, it is sent to the police department and stored there until it is needed for

Reasons or Evidence to Support your Claim
First, body cameras provide objective evidence of incidents during arrests (Fourth Amendment
Implications of Police Worn Cameras). Wearing body cameras can show the incident that
occurred to see if the officer used deadly force. It allows people to determine if the police officer
force was reasonable based on the circumstances they faced. If the police officer is wrong in his
or her actions they will be punished for it. Overall the body cameras are a safety measure for both
the individual and the officer.
Second, the use of camera footage can help to train officers in handling future interactions with
citizens (Lights, Camera, Action: The age of body cameras in law enforcement). The purpose of it
is to show someone s experience with the public so that other officers will make less mistakes.
This creates officers that are better trained and aware of different circumstances that may occur.
The public can benefit from this because situations will be handled with less force and deadly
actions by the police. It is important that the police maintain the safety of

The Sensorimotor Stage Of Piaget s Developmental Stages

Levtex Baby Night Owl Musical Mobile
Introduction:
This psychological study will define Piaget s Sensorimotor Stage in the context of a children s toy
entitled: Levtex Baby Night Owl Musical Mobile. An analysis of the child s perception of this toy
will defined through the sensory impressions during the infantile stage. The sensorimotor stage is
the stage from birth to 2 years of age, which defines the way tht an infant, recognizes objects
through direct sensory impressions and motor activates. The owl Mobile is an example of the
visual and audio perceptions for an infant that would be good for this stage of development. The

Eventually, the child will begin to understand the visual objects and audio sounds that would be
located in the closest proximity. This aspects of Piaget s theory defines the important aspects of the
infant s perception of the world, which would begin at the 4 to 8 month stage:
Secondary circular reactions (4 to 8 months): Now babies focus shifts from their own body to
objects in the world (secondary). They learn to control not just their body but other things as well
and will repeat random actions for their results (Ashford et al, 2010, 246).
In this context, the secondary world of the infant becomes more extensive, which results in the
movement of the mobile due to the stimulation of sight and sound. The physical sensation of
kicking the mobile becomes an interaction, which allows the child to explore their own bodily
movements and the object they are kicking,. This type of movement is crucial for understanding
the impact of sensory action and the development of motor skills in this process: For instance, if
a baby is lying in a crib and looking at a mobile and the baby kicks its feet and the mobile moves
(and the baby kicks its feet and the mobile moves), the baby will kick its feet again to see whether
the mobile will move (Ashford et al, 2010, 246). Surely, this defines the cognitive development of
the infant during this stage, since they are now making direct

Atlantic Transformations
The Earth has undergone a series of physical transformations throughout its history, and every
transformation changes the way things such as water currents, heat circulation, and climate
manifest. Twenty million years ago, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans flowed freely between North
and South America because there was no land barrier between them, which meant that the salinity
of the oceans were similar. This meant that warm water vapor wasn t being carried up to the North
Atlantic, like happens today. When the pacific plate was pushed under the Caribbean plate
volcanoes, islands, and eventually the body of land that connects North and South America formed.
This caused the currents of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to go towards the north,

Persuasive Essay On Animal Dissection
Most people have dissected an animal at some point in their education, be it a frog, pig, cat, or
another animal. Every year in the United States, roughly ten million animals are killed and used for
dissection in schools ( Animals Used in Education 1).The surplus of students dissecting animals in
class has led to this substantial number. Dissectionis said to increase student understanding of
biology and an interest in careers in science (Edulab 1), which is why countless schools have their
students dissect animals. However, others advocate for methods that don t involve cruelty to
animals. Why use a learning technique if other methods are less expensive, and some tactics equally
or more effective regarding student learning? Essentially, an abundance of schools incorporate
animal dissection as an educational tool, but they seldom think of how negatively the lives of
countless animals are impacted. People don t fathom the cruelty that happens to animals before
they land on the dissection table, and that is something that needs to be changed. The dissection of
animals for educationhas been a traditionally used teaching tactic for decades, and it is cruel and
should no longer be used. To start, the suppliers of the animals to be dissected have been caught
mistreating their animals. PETA s investigations into biological supply companies, which sell
animal bodies and parts, have uncovered acts of cruelty to animals, including the drowning of
rabbits and the embalming of cats

Gun Control Persuasive Essay
This country has come to terms with the unfortunate reality of today s wicked world. Brutality,
inhumanity, and bloodshed seem to coincide with day to day lives of the innocent. Americans
are constantly bombarded with the ever growing drawback of violence. Let s face it, these very
own streets being casually wandered upon by faultless community members has now become a
fiery battleground. This identified truth cannot be ignored and any individual would be a fool to
turn a blind eye towards the damage these criminals are putting forth on society. Mankind must
respond in a way that puts an end to these horrors, however, the effort by some ill judged beings
to terminate the legal and rightfully given ownership of firearms does not tackle the real problem
at hand, whatsoever. In fact, it simply disarms the law abiding civilians who are in need of this
structure of self defense the most. When approaching the issue of gun control, the previously stated
backward process is so important to understand. It should be greatly emphasized how these laws rip
away, one by one, the protection of the people by demobilizing those who are obedient and
honorable. With that being said, such gun bans should not be tolerated because these regulations
are ineffective in the sense that they do not solve the concrete issue, which is the person directly
behind the gun, and because these actions outwardly bash on the most fundamental right given to
any living soul: the right to defend one s own

Essay Overview of Dementia
Dementia is a syndrome, which is usually of a chronic or progressive nature, which causes
deterioration in cognitive function. It goes beyond what is expected from normal aging. It
causes changes in what you remember, like appointments, or phone numbers. It may cause you
to get lost in a familiar setting like driving to the grocery store. You may not be able to balance
your checkbook or add up your points in a card game. Communication becomes difficult; as you
cannot find the words you want to say. Your personality may change, you may become paranoid,
be crabby or short tempered, and you may say or do inappropriate things or laugh when nothing is
funny. Dementia is one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people...

Even though people with dementia can stay fully conscious, they have loss of short and long
term memory partially or in full. These people may also have difficulty expressing themselves
or making themselves understood. They may not be able to follow patterns or recipes even
though they may have hundreds of times before. They may not realize what time it is or what
season it is. They may even get lost on the way home from the grocery store. The majority of
dementia is not inherited, but it depends a lot on the particular cause of dementia. Some rare
causes of dementia are inherited, like Huntington s disease. This is an autosomal dominant

long enough, they could pass it on and it wouldn t skip a generation. Dementia affects each
person in a different way, depending on the impact of the disease and the person s personality
before he/she became ill. The signs and symptoms that are linked to dementia can be understood in
three stages. There are the early stages, middle stages, and late stages. The early stages of dementia
are almost always overlooked since the onset is gradual. The symptoms are familiar to us all, like
misplacing items, forgetting appointments not being aware of the time. As dementia reaches the
middle stage, the

Sexual Orientation Identity Analysis
My understanding of sexual orientation identity is that although there are many developments of
sexual identities, there is only one that people see it as normal. Which is the development of
heterosexual identity. Also, because of that all the other sexual development of orientation
identities, such as lesbianism, gay and bisexuals development of sexual orientationidentity are being
focused more than heterosexual orientation identity. This is very interesting because the author
compares the development of sexual orientation identity and the racial identity development.
Although, there are many different cultures that exist in this world and although they have diverse
of sexual practices, they almost have one thing in common which is the heterosexual

The Issue Of Pay Equality
Lilly Ledbetter wasn t lazy; she and all women just want equal pay Rebuttal
The issue of pay equality between genders has always been an important topic. For some reason
many people believe that women are still unfairly paid less than men. The common statistic, now
popular belief, is that women get paid seventy seven cents for every dollar a man makes. Though
this statistic seems real it was no more than a false statistic used to help politicians get votes. The
truth is, if the math was done the correct way, then this statistic would be significantly smaller than
we originally thought.
When comparing job salaries between workers you would first need to compare the average
income between the two sexes. The statistic used (seventy seven cents) is a median value for
women. The reason why this information would be wrong is because this compares all ranges of
salaries; the amount of people involved, and finds the middle value in the list. This method is
incorrect for two reasons in particular. First of all, the salaries of all workers of that gender would be
compared; this means workers of different work fields would be compared to each other s. Second
of all, if there were numerically more of one gender than the other then the statistics for comparing
them would be off. Basically, because of these seemingly obvious reasons the standard deviations in
pay differences would be a much larger value than it should. This is exactly what happened in the
statistic seventy

Research Paper On Graffiti Vandals
Graffiti is not art it is vandalism, because people want to show they are bad and can do bad
things.Graffiti vandals get both public and private property. When a neighborhood has graffiti
people automatically view it as a bad neighborhood . In addition, to the cleanup costs or graffiti,
graffiti vandals shoplift their materials, so it cost the city more money to clean up and pay for the
materials.
Graffiti vandals vandalize both private and public property. The text says, Graffiti vandals vandalize
both public and private property, which becomes costly for taxpayers and business and property
owners. So this means, that vandals are not only vandalizing noticeable things but the non

Scarlet Letter Brooding Romanticism
At the end of chapter 5, it is evident that Hester is more of a brooding Romantic; she has a tragic
confrontation with the universe around her, she isolates herself and becomes paranoid, and she
develops a dark outlook of her scarlet letter by associating it with Hell. After experiencing an
extreme amount of public humiliation, it is no surprise that Hester Prynne may think negatively
about her reality in Boston. Hester s negative outlook, a characteristic that can be credited to her
broodingly romantic personality, is clearly evident within the end of chapter 5. The cause of this
negative outlook is due to a tragic confrontation that she experiences with the world around her.
She looks beyond her own sins and has a sudden realization that in fact anyone has the ability to
transgress just as easily as she did. Hester is terror stricken by the revelations of knowing that
others sin. The fact that she is terror stricken suggests that she is now looking at the world around
her in a way she never previously had. Hester is overwhelmed with terror to realize that people are
genuinely immoral. This scene highlights a major concept of brooding romanticism: a character
having a tragic confrontation with the universe... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the final paragraph, those with vulgar minds are credited with contributing grotesque horror to
their conception of the scarlet letter. However, this grotesque horror is not so grotesque after all.
Hawthorne reveals that the scarlet letter being a symbol of infernal fire is more of a reality for
Hester than an actual rumor. Associating the scarlet letter with something infernal implies that it
can be connected to the idea of Hell. This yields a very dark and dire perspective of reality for
Hester, and the connection of Hester to Hell through the scarlet letter epitomizes the brooding

In 2008, the Executive Director of UNODC, Antonio Maria Costa, affirmed there is indeed a spirit
of reform in the air, to make the conventions fit for purpose and adapt them to the reality on the
ground that is considerably different to the time they were drafted. With the multilateral machinery
to adapt the conventions already available, all we need is: first, a renewed commitment to the
principles of multilateralism and shared responsibility; second, a commitment to base our reform on
empirical evidence and not ideology; and thirdly, to put in place concrete actions that support the
above, going beyond mere rhetoric and pronouncement . (UNODC, 2008)

Globalization And Mass Migration Is A Diverse And Dynamic...
Globalisation and mass migration means that Australia is a diverse and dynamic place. In Australia,
many refugee background students experience difficulties adjusting to their new environment and
school settings. The increasing diversity in Australian schools present various challenges for not
only refugee students and their learning experiences, but for teachers as well. Therefore, the
consideration and evaluation of educational research is crucial, so that educational practices and
pedagogies are informed by research for the benefit of students learning and development. With the
increase of refugee background students there has been a need for the implementation and
evaluation of strategies and policies in order to establish appropriate ways to engage with the
complex issues around refugee background students transition to education. This can be seen
through the creation of the Refugee Action Support Program (RAS) that was designed to provide
tutoring to students from refugee backgrounds in Western Sydney schools. In regards to
educational policy, the Multicultural Educational Policy aims to respond to the cultural diversity of
New South Wales by committing schools to providing opportunities that enable all students to
achieve equitable education and social outcomes ( Multicultural Education Policy, 2016). Such
programs and policies reinforce that Australia recognises the increasing cultural diversity and needs

Role of the Mexican-American War in Bridging the Gap...
ABOLITION TO SECESSION VIA MEXICAN AMERICAN WAR 1 The Mexican American
War (1846 1848) marked a midpoint in U.S. history that bridged the gap between the abolitionist
movement and the Civil War, which is not always recognized but is in some ways still with us
today. Teacher Eric Burnett, for example, outlines a long list of catalysts leading up to the Civil
War itself but omits the Mexican American war even though the Civil War catalysts go back
through the 1840s all the way back to Eli Whitney inventing the Cotton Gin in 1793 (2010, n.p.).
The Mexican American war, however, aggravated the division between the free, abolitionist
North, and the pro slave South, where the abolitionist Northerners saw the U.S. annexation of
Texas and the lands north of the Rio Grande after the decisive victory over Mexico, as an attempt
by the slave states to extend slavery and enhance their power when additional slave states were
created out of soon to be acquired Mexican lands (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2012, n.p.). This re
opened a conflict that had been lying dormant since the Missouri Compromise of 1820, where
Missouri and any new states south of the Missouri border would enter the Union as slave states, but
anything north of Missouri would enter as free states. This aggravated the political division that
would result in the birth of the abolitionist Republican party, and cause the imbalance between the
pro slave South, against the anti slavery North, that led directly to Jan. 1861

Supermarkets today across the world have become extremely competitive in nature and the

It also helps to know that today data is widely available on almost any factor in consideration.
Such large data can be used well for analysing and finding any particular trends that may benefit

Research Aim
The primary aim of the research is to assess the impact of product placement on the sales of a
product and determine whether there would be any improvement or decrement in sales as a result
of switching shelf space.
Research Objectives
The objectives of the research are to assess if a product placed in one position on the shelves is
better than it being placed in another position and to see if it is better to place the product with
any other items which can be thought to help improve the sales. Also, another objective of the
research is to understand whether data analysis can be used to improve the shelf management and
whether the inferences from such data analysis for a number of stores in a single supermarket can
be characterized to be standard across the board or whether the output of such analysis should only
be used in a particular store from which data was collected.
Research Questions
This research will concentrate the efforts on answering the below questions:
1.How does shelf management affect the sales of the product? Whether the sales of a product
which was already selling well, decrease because of a shift in the shelf space? Or does the sales of a
product which was not selling before improve because of a change in the shelf space?
2.Which position on the shelf space has

Women s Roles Over Time
From silent short films of the 19th century to full length films of the 1920s, women have played
important central roles over time. Women have transitioned from submissive conservative roles to
liberal something. A big part of this is due to the view of women changing in history.
The 1800s was a time of, advancement, invention and enterprise in the world of moving images.
Thomas Edison, with the help of his assistants, created and patented the Kinetograph and

Virgil uses the character of Aeneas to show how if you follow your destiny and what the gods

Airline Pricing And The Game Of Yield Management
Airline Pricing and the Game of Yield Management
For the past few decades, the airlines are looking for the possibility to improve their yield
management to maximize their profit. In order to achieve it, they have started to develop the yield
management analysis, to understand the best time to sell the flight tickets with higher or lower
prices, so, helping them to decide properly.
How can airline companies improve their yield management in order to increase their profit
without demand analysis? According to the OpenStax College, economists have defined the
term demand as the amount of some good or service consumers are willing and able to purchase
at each price . . . [and] based on needs and wants . . . [and] based on an ability to pay (2014,
Demand for Goods and Services section, para. 1). Thus, is possible to consider the demand
analysis as a useful tool which airline companies can adopt to fully understand the main
microeconomic aspects that are being affected by the behavior of their customers and also, their
final results.
This paper intends to examine whether the elasticity of demand plays a role in profit maximization,
whether the practice of business behavior pricing is reflected in the principles, and how price
discrimination helps airline companies to reach their objective in profit maximization.
A way to comprehend the connection between the elasticity of demand and the profit maximization,
it is needed first to conceptualize the demand in terms of economic

Fox Talbot s The Open Door
Is a photograph worth more than just words? Absolutely. The visual choices made by a
photographer delivers powerful messages, and in W.H.F. Talbot s photo titled The Open Door, I see
a picture that utilizes shadows and light to emphasize the subject. The word photography means
writing with light. With the invention of calotype, Fox Talbot started the revolution of modern
photographyin today s world.
Trained as a mathematician and chemist, Fox Talbot toyed with photography because it offered a
form of documentation or evidence of his findings in science. Thus, photography developed from
within the area of science. As he searched for a reasonable method of transferring his captured
image onto paper, Fox Talbot coated paper with a solution... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

But I see the shadows and light as inviting me into the room. In many cultures, people view a
doorway as a symbolic boundary between life and death, but because the door is open, I can see
hope, not death and darkness. Even though the vines and darkness within the room create a kind of
creepy feeling, the picture is inviting and appealing while emphasizing a mystery and uncertainty.
The old blocks used to construct the building along with the rustic door, and primitive broom
indicates a time back in history. In the center of the photograph, the vertical frame of the doorway
appears in contrast to the diagonal shadows, but I see a relationship between the angled broom
which is leaning and the shadow on the door. The angles and shadows contrast with the balanced
lantern on the outside wall which reflects light. Similar to the genre of Dutch paintings of the time,
Fox Talbot characterized the scenes of daily life of the ordinary people. The photograph presents
an old building bathed in light, while the interior is dark and shadowy. The scientist turned artist
uses symmetry to accent the open doorway. The works of Fox Talbot established photography as
an art. This early photograph s genre is that it depicts the simple side explicitly imitating the Dutch
paintings of scenes from everyday life and an interest in the ordinary things around him. The artist

Nathan Bedford Forrest And Thomas Jackson Essay
Nathan Bedford Forrest and Thomas Jackson, both where extraordinary individuals living for the
cause which they saw fit.
General Nathan Bedford Forrest was a man born with determination and Grit. He started off with
nothing and lost his father when he was only 16 years old. He lived with his uncle for some time
but before long his uncle was killed in the streets over a dispute. Forrest then rode out in search of
those who killed his uncle, hunted them down and killed two of the murders. At the break out of
the American Civil WarForrest who sided with the confederacy, was quite a wealthy man owning
his own plantation with slaves. Forrest brought along 45 slaves. They fought just as any other
soldier in the Confederate army. This always interested me that General Forrest placed his men
together both black and white and they were all one body of men united, while the Union army had
segregated units for African Americans.
On the field of battle Forrest was a magnificent fighter, and a very Tactical Commander. He fought
in battles like Shiloh in Chickamauga. Here is the crazy part about General Nathan Bedford
Forrest when he served as a general in the Confederate Army.
He had 29 horses shot out from under him he killed Thirty union men with his own hands. If that
is not crazy enough at the end of the Battle of Shiloh his forced lead a cavalry charge into a main
body of Union troops. Slashing with his sabre, General Forrest was stuck by a Union bayonet it

Examples Of Stigma In The Elephant Man
ERVIN GOFFMAN S SOCIAL STIGMA , AND PRESENTATION OF SELF IN EVERYDAY
LIFE Stigma is a corrupting and degrading demeanor of the society that dishonors a person or a
group of persons because of a trait, (for example, a sickness, disfigurement, colour, nationality,
religion and so forth). The subsequent adapting conduct of the influenced individual results in
internalized stigma. This apparent or disguised disgrace by the disparaged individual is equally
destructive regardless of whether genuine discrimination happens. Stigma wrecks a man s nobility;
underestimates the affected people; abuses fundamental human rights; especially reduces the

They have their ways in and out. A man in his time plays numerous parts. Goffman said that we
display a progression of veils to others, enacting, controlling and staging how we appear. We are
always concerned with how we come across, always attempting to showcase ourselves in the
best light. No matter where we are, we always put on a mask to get what we want and to be
where we want to be. We get influenced by what is considered to be beautiful and good by the
society. We become who others want us to be. According to Goffman, we are active and
knowledgeable. We devise our own conduct and guide and control how others see us. We are
different in social settings than alone. Thus we are special con artists . We play many diverse
roles dictated by the circumstances we are in. We try to appear as what we would want to appear,
depending upon who we are interacting with. This is apparent in awkward situations where we
suddenly find ourselves attempting to assume two conflicting parts, like when we meet people
from different social circles, and need to juggle the masks that we ve put

Dreams And Dreams Essay
Dreams, what they mean and what they are, are questions that have long been in the
philosophical discourse, these questions even branching out into the fields psychology and
biology. However, one question about dreams that hasn t been asked is if the dream is a kind of
art, and narrowing it down for the purposes of this paper, if dreams are a kind of fiction. This
question has effects and implications and influences in so many fields of philosophythat answering
it will be kept to the essentials of the argument. In this paper, I will examine the question if a
dream is a fiction, how and if dreams and film are related, and I will conclude that by examination
of the similarities and distinctions that exist between fictions and dreams... Show more content on

The next portion is to attempt to define what a fiction is, and here I will use Gregory Currie s
essay What is Fiction? In it, he argues that fictions are engaging in games of make belief, an idea
present in Kendall Walton s Fearing Fictionality article. The main crux of Currie s definition is
intentionality. He argues that the creator of the fiction not only intends to have the audience engage
in games of make belief but that they will also do it as a result of understanding that intention. He
also argues that the creator intends for the reader to make believe the fiction, through the uses of
props, be it the sentences, actors, et cetera. She intends them to make believe the fiction partly as a
recognition of the intent to make believe the work as a fiction. So the audience understands the
work as fiction because they perceive it as fiction. He argues that it can be recognized or perceived
as fiction through the use of advertisement that the work is a fiction, that the work includes
elements familiar to fiction, or that the author can explicitly state that a particular work is a fiction
through deliberate word or stylistic choices. He does make it clear that this intention can go awry,
that the audience and community can misconstrue the intention of the author, and can even go so
far that the community around the fiction attributes the status of fiction towards the fiction,
regardless of the intention of the creator. It is

Why Did They Build Castles During The Middle Ages
Castles were built during the Middle Ages as fortified homes for kings and nobility. Why did
they build Castles? During the Middle Ages much of Europe was divided up between lords and
princes. They would rule the local land and all the people who lived there. In order to defend
themselves, they built their homes as large castles in the center of the land they ruled. They could
defend from attacks as well as prepare to launch attacks of their own from their castles. Originally
castles were made of wood and timber. Later they were replaced with stone to make them stronger.
Castles were often built at the top of hills or where they could use some natural features of the land
to help with their defense. After the Middle Agescastles weren t built as much, especially... Show

around the castle which had a walkway on it from which defenders could fire arrows down onto

attackers, but remain safe from return fire. Gatehouse The gatehouse was built at the gate to help
reinforce the castle defenses at its weakest point. Battlements Battlements were at the tops of castle
walls. Generally they were cut out from walls allowing defenders to attack while still being
protected by the wall. Famous Castles Windsor Castle William the Conqueror built this castle after

The Conflict Between Saudi Arabia And Iran
It s often thought, in the west, that the feud between Saudi Arabia and Iran is 14 centurys old and
that we don t understand it because we (the west) are so dis attached from religion in governance.
For example, the end of religious politics in the US is credited with the writings of the English
philosopher John Locke and this view on religion became particularly influential in the United
States Constitution in 1787 (ref). State figures like Barack Obama showed this in his final State of
the Union Address, he called the region a place rooted in conflicts that date back millennia (Obama,
2016). The truth of the situation is, religious politics has been left behind in the west. It s true that
the divide in identities within Islamwas formed from a religious dispute centuries ago. It s also
nothing new that Sunnis and Shia s have been in conflict for decades maybe centuries. The rivalry
between the two has had a violent affect in contemporary Middle Eaststabilization and politics.
Sectarianism between Saudi Arabia and Iran shouldn t be concluded as a foreign ancient feud that
conflicts modern political logic but rather a modern phenomenon and a product of contemporary
politics. Furthermore, it is playing out not in obscure theological forums but in the political arena.
Sectarianism has become the product of key factors that play into religion. Islamism is a modern
day ideology which asks for an ideal Islamic state, formed on the foundations of Islamic law.

Sitting Bull and the Paradox of Lakota Nationhood
A Hunkpapa Lakota chief named Sitting Bull and the history of the Lakota nationhood was the
chosen subject of Gary C. Anderson to write a biography on. Although most of the history about
Sitting Bull took place back in the eighteen hundreds, Anderson did not come out with his book tell
around 1995. Addison Wesley Educational Publishers published the book in 1996. The book
follows the history of Sitting Bulland the native Indians fight with the white man over land.
The first chapter goes back in history and sets up the story and setting. It was the eighteenth century
and the Americans were beginning to invade the lands west of the Mississippi River. This caused
problems because even though Americans saw the lands as an unoccupied ... Show more content on

One of the most significant religious rituals performed among the Lakota s was the Sundance. They
were performed every June and everyone would come together to form one large village. The men
would dance and stare into the sun until they saw visions. Sitting Bull s first Sundance was
somewhere around his twentieth birthday.
Highly respected for his bravery and insight, Sitting Bull became one of the head chiefs of the
Lakota nation around 1868. Anderson goes on in the book to talk about the defense of the
homeland of the Lakota s from the government, by Sitting Bull and the other tribes. Sitting Bull had
no intention of selling any land and made that clear to the Americans. Land boundaries became a
large issue between the Americans and the Lakotas. Americans pushed the Indians to define the
territories so that purchases could be made.
Not only was the railroad disturbing to hunting but this also made it much easier and cheaper bring
out the military troops, their food and supplies. The troops were hired be the government to search
out the Indians and get them to move off and sign over their land. One main land that the
government and the Indians feuded over was the Black Hills. They were over run with new settlers
because of the rumor of gold. The Indians went to the government to complain about the unwanted
guest, but even though the treaty of 1868 had granted the Black Hills as Indian

The White Umbrella Theme
The White Umbrella Theme Essay Pedro Ruiz Martin Rashad the author of The White Umbrella
presents to the reader an entertaining story about a Chinese girl who moves to america, and tries
to fit in with all the other girls her age. She and her sister both try to keep the embarrassing secret
that their mom has a job, but both have a pretty hard time accepting it. Later, the main character
finds the most appealing umbrella she s seen in her life. She gets it, and then throws it into the
sewer. The author of the story s theme is to be grateful for what you have, and you will realize you
have everything you need. One of the ways the author conveys this theme is through title. The title
conveys the theme by including one of the most important parts of the story, which was when the
piano teacher lets the main character have the beautiful umbrella that she wanted. This affected the
main character greatly, because she was already upset with her mom for not being there, then the
piano teacher gives the umbrella, so then the main character says to the piano teacher I wish you
were my mother. That s probably why the author decided to choose that title, because it was such an
effective and important moment for the character and the story in general.... Show more content on

mother arrived. It s also shocking that the main character threw away the beautiful umbrella that she

The Importance Of A Law Enforcement Officer
Besides preventing crime and protecting the public, the job of a law enforcement officer consists
of integrity, honesty and humility. Officers of the law are held to a higher standard than other
individuals that hold public service positions. Therefore, there are policies and procedures in place
that require more from them while they are performing their duties. Due to the high level of
integrity expected from law enforcement officers, truthfulness and a high standard of ethical
behavior is required. However, some officers fall short, and departments are faced with the decision
on how to discipline officers who fail to meet the expectations that come with working for law
enforcement.
Police organizations should have policies in place that protect officers, as well as reprimand law
enforcement officers when the engage in wrongdoings. When officers lie, they risk termination of
their job based on their dishonesty in regard to their career, as well as their lack of better judgment.
In the case of Kitsap County Deputy Sheriff s Guild v. Kitsap County, the sheriff s department
terminated a deputy based on his untruthfulness and unstable behavior (Spector, 2008). The
department felt that the officer s integrity was in question, and because of his unpredictable
behavior he would no longer be useful as a law enforcement officer for their department. In the
beginning, a judge felt that termination of Deputy LaFrance s position was not a reasonable
discipline decision appropriate to

  • 2. Dukes v. Wal-Mart Essay Dukes v. Wal Mart Stores, Inc. is a legal battle concerning whether or not the company engaged willfully in gender based discrimination. Underlying causes, organizational culture and ethical issues will be examined in determining how the largest private employer in the United States could have fallen prey to unfair labor practices. In 1999, women constituted 72% of Wal Mart s hourly employees, but only 33% of its managerial employees (Bhatnagar, 2004). This fact and many others are the reasons many people allege that Wal Mart has unfair labor practices. The Dukes v. Wal Mart case challenged the hiring, promotion and pay practices of Wal Mart. Employee Cleo Page actually experienced the effects of Wal Mart s unethical labor practices. Ms. Page began working for Wal Mart as a cashier in one of their super centers in Tulsa, OK making $6.50/hr. Page resigned from her job three years later from a store in California where she was making $10/hr. Over the three years of employment, she received above standard evaluations, but despite her desire for advancement, she was passed over twice for promotions by less qualified male applicants. Page had also encountered other women who had similar experiences, some who were in the same position for eight years. Three years of earning low wages adversely affected Page s financial situation. She had little savings and as a result, she lost her house in California in addition to the foster children she was caring for. Page declared that she would not have lost her home and children if she had been given the well deserved promotion. The promotion came with many great incentives and better bonuses. This alone would have improved her financial situation. Wal Mart is the largest retail store in the United States. The root cause of the problem with Wal Mart is that they try to increase their profits by minimizing their costs. Many internal policies are used to maintain this philosophy. First and foremost is the strong organizational culture that is dictated from the home offices. Store level managers receive discipline ranging from written ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Descriptive Essay On The Mountains Going and taking micro adventures to the mountains which were fairly close to my house was a bit of a semi common thing, however going with only friends of mine was a thing I didn t do at all. When the suggestion to go up by my friend Alex was made, Jesse and I quickly agreed to go along with this plan. We then proceeded to make our way to the mountain and as we were driving up I decidedto chime in and make a suggestion, saying We should climbup from the base of the waterfall everybody else quickly agreed since that seemed to be a nice little leisure activity for a group of teenagers. With the weather slowly warming melting the snow on the mountains causing water flow the scenery was just gorgeous, with many rocks having a bright reflective look caused by the sun and water interacting. This scenery was just perfect for a climb up the fall. As we climbed we all took notice of just how pretty the mountain was. Seeing trees, rocks, water spiders, and many other things we don t see every single day. As we continued up the mountain we eventually got this amazing area with some more reflective brown gorgeous rocks that were similar to a bunch of tiny steps. With all the water running down the rocks my dark brown Sperry s I decided to wear started to show why they were called boat shoes this is because they were quite good at sticking to surfaces without slipping. Even though highly unorthodox with my shoes for some reason they seemed to work quite well except for coming untied more times than I would have enjoyed. As we continued to climb we took a few group pictures as well as making a fair amount of jokes to help ease our minds off of the physical work we were putting into climbing up this mountain. After we climbed up for about fifteen minutes much of the rocks that had places for our feet to go into and cradle providing full support were gone and being left with solely smooth rocks that if you wanted you could slide down with relative ease. So the rate at which we were scaling these rocks had to slow, however not terribly but our speed was crippled by being a little more cognizant and careful. Never the less we continued to climb up, eventually a few more these rocksteps showed up and of course we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Employees form the basis of a successful organisation and the abilities and behavior of employees can vary the performance of an organisation significantly. Due to the fact that respective jobs require specific sets of skills or attributes, selections are essential in ensuring that the most suitable candidates are hired. Selection refers to the process of assessing candidates by various means and making a choice followed by an offer of employment (Graham, 1998, p.206). From an economic perspective, the subsequent costs of occupational fraud include a reduction of stock prices and loss of employment. These economic costs are exemplified by the 5% of revenue lost per annum from every average Canadian organisation as a result of employment fraud (Koletar, 2003). According to Herman, a positive correlation exists between the degree to which a candidate could be in a position to cause harm to others, colleagues, or the organisation and that of a reference check (Herman, 1993). For example, public servants and jobs that necessitate the handling of inordinate amounts of money would warrant a background check, as the risk of financial losses or damage to government organization reputations are higher. Interviews remain a widely used selection technique in contemporary industries despite the relative unreliability of this method. Dipboye reports that approximately 70% of organizations in the United States utilize interviews as the main selection strategy in both promotion and recruitment ( Dipboye, 1992). • 11. The Character Of Lonnie Smith In Walker Percy s Dialogues From the time he was a boy, he had the heart of an elder (Gregory 1). For St. Gregory the Great, St. Benedict was not only a role model Benedictine monk, but the man of God (Gregory 7). The Father of Western Monasticism lived a detached life from the world, and he only made his way back to public life because of God s Will. Throughout his Dialogues, St. Gregory portrays Benedict as a man who embraces an austere life, yet is content and happy. About 1400 years later, another Catholic writer, Walker Percy, authored a book with a familiar story; The Moviegoer illustrates one character, Lonnie Smith, who is the only happy character compared to several others. After outlining St. Benedict s philosophy of life, I argue that Lonnie is happy (unlike the other characters in the novel) because he, like St. Benedict, recognizes the finitude of earthly affairs and fixes his gaze upon Heavenly matters.... This aspects of Piaget s theory defines the important aspects of the infant s perception of the world, which would begin at the 4 to 8 month stage: Secondary circular reactions (4 to 8 months): Now babies focus shifts from their own body to objects in the world (secondary). They learn to control not just their body but other things as well and will repeat random actions for their results (Ashford et al, 2010, 246). In this context, the secondary world of the infant becomes more extensive, which results in the movement of the mobile due to the stimulation of sight and sound. The physical sensation of kicking the mobile becomes an interaction, which allows the child to explore their own bodily movements and the object they are kicking,. This type of movement is crucial for understanding the impact of sensory action and the development of motor skills in this process: For instance, if a baby is lying in a crib and looking at a mobile and the baby kicks its feet and the mobile moves (and the baby kicks its feet and the mobile moves), the baby will kick its feet again to see whether the mobile will move (Ashford et al, 2010, 246). Every year in the United States, roughly ten million animals are killed and used for dissection in schools ( Animals Used in Education 1).The surplus of students dissecting animals in class has led to this substantial number. Dissectionis said to increase student understanding of biology and an interest in careers in science (Edulab 1), which is why countless schools have their students dissect animals. However, others advocate for methods that don t involve cruelty to animals. Why use a learning technique if other methods are less expensive, and some tactics equally or more effective regarding student learning? Essentially, an abundance of schools incorporate animal dissection as an educational tool, but they seldom think of how negatively the lives of countless animals are impacted. People don t fathom the cruelty that happens to animals before they land on the dissection table, and that is something that needs to be changed. The dissection of animals for educationhas been a traditionally used teaching tactic for decades, and it is cruel and should no longer be used. Brutality, inhumanity, and bloodshed seem to coincide with day to day lives of the innocent. Americans are constantly bombarded with the ever growing drawback of violence. Let s face it, these very own streets being casually wandered upon by faultless community members has now become a fiery battleground. This identified truth cannot be ignored and any individual would be a fool to turn a blind eye towards the damage these criminals are putting forth on society. Mankind must respond in a way that puts an end to these horrors, however, the effort by some ill judged beings to terminate the legal and rightfully given ownership of firearms does not tackle the real problem at hand, whatsoever. In fact, it simply disarms the law abiding civilians who are in need of this structure of self defense the most. When approaching the issue of gun control, the previously stated backward process is so important to understand. It should be greatly emphasized how these laws rip away, one by one, the protection of the people by demobilizing those who are obedient and honorable. With that being said, such gun bans should not be tolerated because these regulations are ineffective in the sense that they do not solve the concrete issue, which is the person directly behind the gun, and because these actions outwardly bash on the most fundamental right given to any living soul: the right to defend one s own ... Communication becomes difficult; as you cannot find the words you want to say. • 23. The Issue Of Pay Equality Lilly Ledbetter wasn t lazy; she and all women just want equal pay Rebuttal The issue of pay equality between genders has always been an important topic. For some reason many people believe that women are still unfairly paid less than men. The common statistic, now popular belief, is that women get paid seventy seven cents for every dollar a man makes. Though this statistic seems real it was no more than a false statistic used to help politicians get votes. The truth is, if the math was done the correct way, then this statistic would be significantly smaller than we originally thought. When comparing job salaries between workers you would first need to compare the average income between the two sexes. The statistic used (seventy seven cents) is a median value for women. The reason why this information would be wrong is because this compares all ranges of salaries; the amount of people involved, and finds the middle value in the list. This method is incorrect for two reasons in particular. First of all, the salaries of all workers of that gender would be compared; this means workers of different work fields would be compared to each other s. Second of all, if there were numerically more of one gender than the other then the statistics for comparing them would be off. Basically, because of these seemingly obvious reasons the standard deviations in pay differences would be a much larger value than it should. This is exactly what happened in the statistic seventy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Scarlet Letter Brooding Romanticism At the end of chapter 5, it is evident that Hester is more of a brooding Romantic; she has a tragic confrontation with the universe around her, she isolates herself and becomes paranoid, and she develops a dark outlook of her scarlet letter by associating it with Hell. After experiencing an extreme amount of public humiliation, it is no surprise that Hester Prynne may think negatively about her reality in Boston. Hester s negative outlook, a characteristic that can be credited to her broodingly romantic personality, is clearly evident within the end of chapter 5. The cause of this negative outlook is due to a tragic confrontation that she experiences with the world around her. She looks beyond her own sins and has a sudden realization that in fact anyone has the ability to transgress just as easily as she did. Hester is terror stricken by the revelations of knowing that others sin. The fact that she is terror stricken suggests that she is now looking at the world around her in a way she never previously had. Hester is overwhelmed with terror to realize that people are genuinely immoral. This scene highlights a major concept of brooding romanticism: a character having a tragic confrontation with the universe... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the final paragraph, those with vulgar minds are credited with contributing grotesque horror to their conception of the scarlet letter. However, this grotesque horror is not so grotesque after all. Hawthorne reveals that the scarlet letter being a symbol of infernal fire is more of a reality for Hester than an actual rumor. Associating the scarlet letter with something infernal implies that it can be connected to the idea of Hell. This yields a very dark and dire perspective of reality for Hester, and the connection of Hester to Hell through the scarlet letter epitomizes the brooding Romantic inside of ... With the multilateral machinery to adapt the conventions already available, all we need is: first, a renewed commitment to the principles of multilateralism and shared responsibility; second, a commitment to base our reform on empirical evidence and not ideology; and thirdly, to put in place concrete actions that support the above, going beyond mere rhetoric and pronouncement . • 33. Role of the Mexican-American War in Bridging the Gap... ABOLITION TO SECESSION VIA MEXICAN AMERICAN WAR 1 The Mexican American War (1846 1848) marked a midpoint in U.S. history that bridged the gap between the abolitionist movement and the Civil War, which is not always recognized but is in some ways still with us today. Teacher Eric Burnett, for example, outlines a long list of catalysts leading up to the Civil War itself but omits the Mexican American war even though the Civil War catalysts go back through the 1840s all the way back to Eli Whitney inventing the Cotton Gin in 1793 (2010, n.p.). The Mexican American war, however, aggravated the division between the free, abolitionist North, and the pro slave South, where the abolitionist Northerners saw the U.S. annexation of Texas and the lands north of the Rio Grande after the decisive victory over Mexico, as an attempt by the slave states to extend slavery and enhance their power when additional slave states were created out of soon to be acquired Mexican lands (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2012, n.p.). This re opened a conflict that had been lying dormant since the Missouri Compromise of 1820, where Missouri and any new states south of the Missouri border would enter the Union as slave states, but anything north of Missouri would enter as free states. This aggravated the political division that would result in the birth of the abolitionist Republican party, and cause the imbalance between the pro slave South, against the anti slavery North, that led directly to Jan. 1861 ... Similar to the genre of Dutch paintings of the time, Fox Talbot characterized the scenes of daily life of the ordinary people. The photograph presents an old building bathed in light, while the interior is dark and shadowy. The scientist turned artist uses symmetry to accent the open doorway. The works of Fox Talbot established photography as an art. This early photograph s genre is that it depicts the simple side explicitly imitating the Dutch paintings of scenes from everyday life and an interest in the ordinary things around him. • 46. Nathan Bedford Forrest And Thomas Jackson Essay Nathan Bedford Forrest and Thomas Jackson, both where extraordinary individuals living for the cause which they saw fit. General Nathan Bedford Forrest was a man born with determination and Grit. He started off with nothing and lost his father when he was only 16 years old. He lived with his uncle for some time but before long his uncle was killed in the streets over a dispute. Forrest then rode out in search of those who killed his uncle, hunted them down and killed two of the murders. At the break out of the American Civil WarForrest who sided with the confederacy, was quite a wealthy man owning his own plantation with slaves. Forrest brought along 45 slaves. They fought just as any other soldier in the Confederate army. This always interested me that General Forrest placed his men together both black and white and they were all one body of men united, while the Union army had segregated units for African Americans. On the field of battle Forrest was a magnificent fighter, and a very Tactical Commander. He fought in battles like Shiloh in Chickamauga. Here is the crazy part about General Nathan Bedford Forrest when he served as a general in the Confederate Army. He had 29 horses shot out from under him he killed Thirty union men with his own hands. If that is not crazy enough at the end of the Battle of Shiloh his forced lead a cavalry charge into a main body of Union troops. Slashing with his sabre, General Forrest was stuck by a Union bayonet it went into Forrest s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Examples Of Stigma In The Elephant Man ERVIN GOFFMAN S SOCIAL STIGMA , AND PRESENTATION OF SELF IN EVERYDAY LIFE Stigma is a corrupting and degrading demeanor of the society that dishonors a person or a group of persons because of a trait, (for example, a sickness, disfigurement, colour, nationality, religion and so forth). The subsequent adapting conduct of the influenced individual results in internalized stigma. This apparent or disguised disgrace by the disparaged individual is equally destructive regardless of whether genuine discrimination happens. Stigma wrecks a man s nobility; underestimates the affected people; abuses fundamental human rights; especially reduces the chances of a stigmatized individual of accomplishing maximum capacity;... Goffman said that we display a progression of veils to others, enacting, controlling and staging how we appear. We are always concerned with how we come across, always attempting to showcase ourselves in the best light. No matter where we are, we always put on a mask to get what we want and to be where we want to be. We get influenced by what is considered to be beautiful and good by the society. We become who others want us to be. According to Goffman, we are active and knowledgeable. We devise our own conduct and guide and control how others see us. We are different in social settings than alone. Thus we are special con artists . We play many diverse roles dictated by the circumstances we are in. We try to appear as what we would want to appear, depending upon who we are interacting with. This is apparent in awkward situations where we suddenly find ourselves attempting to assume two conflicting parts, like when we meet people from different social circles, and need to juggle the masks that we ve put ... • 48. Dreams And Dreams Essay Dreams, what they mean and what they are, are questions that have long been in the philosophical discourse, these questions even branching out into the fields psychology and biology. However, one question about dreams that hasn t been asked is if the dream is a kind of art, and narrowing it down for the purposes of this paper, if dreams are a kind of fiction. This question has effects and implications and influences in so many fields of philosophythat answering it will be kept to the essentials of the argument. In this paper, I will examine the question if a dream is a fiction, how and if dreams and film are related, and I will conclude that by examination of the similarities and distinctions that exist between fictions and dreams... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The next portion is to attempt to define what a fiction is, and here I will use Gregory Currie s essay What is Fiction? In it, he argues that fictions are engaging in games of make belief, an idea present in Kendall Walton s Fearing Fictionality article. The main crux of Currie s definition is intentionality. He argues that the creator of the fiction not only intends to have the audience engage in games of make belief but that they will also do it as a result of understanding that intention. He also argues that the creator intends for the reader to make believe the fiction, through the uses of props, be it the sentences, actors, et cetera. She intends them to make believe the fiction partly as a recognition of the intent to make believe the work as a fiction. So the audience understands the work as fiction because they perceive it as fiction. He argues that it can be recognized or perceived as fiction through the use of advertisement that the work is a fiction, that the work includes elements familiar to fiction, or that the author can explicitly state that a particular work is a fiction through deliberate word or stylistic choices. He does make it clear that this intention can go awry, that the audience and community can misconstrue the intention of the author, and can even go so far that the community around the fiction attributes the status of fiction towards the fiction, regardless of the intention of the creator. During the Middle Ages much of Europe was divided up between lords and princes. They would rule the local land and all the people who lived there. Later they were replaced with stone to make them stronger. Castles were often built at the top of hills or where they could use some natural features of the land to help with their defense. • 50. The Conflict Between Saudi Arabia And Iran It s often thought, in the west, that the feud between Saudi Arabia and Iran is 14 centurys old and that we don t understand it because we (the west) are so dis attached from religion in governance. For example, the end of religious politics in the US is credited with the writings of the English philosopher John Locke and this view on religion became particularly influential in the United States Constitution in 1787 (ref). State figures like Barack Obama showed this in his final State of the Union Address, he called the region a place rooted in conflicts that date back millennia (Obama, 2016). The truth of the situation is, religious politics has been left behind in the west. It s true that the divide in identities within Islamwas formed from a religious dispute centuries ago. It s also nothing new that Sunnis and Shia s have been in conflict for decades maybe centuries. The rivalry between the two has had a violent affect in contemporary Middle Eaststabilization and politics. Sectarianism between Saudi Arabia and Iran shouldn t be concluded as a foreign ancient feud that conflicts modern political logic but rather a modern phenomenon and a product of contemporary politics. Furthermore, it is playing out not in obscure theological forums but in the political arena. Sectarianism has become the product of key factors that play into religion. • 54. The White Umbrella Theme The White Umbrella Theme Essay Pedro Ruiz Martin Rashad the author of The White Umbrella presents to the reader an entertaining story about a Chinese girl who moves to america, and tries to fit in with all the other girls her age. She and her sister both try to keep the embarrassing secret that their mom has a job, but both have a pretty hard time accepting it. Later, the main character finds the most appealing umbrella she s seen in her life. She gets it, and then throws it into the sewer. The author of the story s theme is to be grateful for what you have, and you will realize you have everything you need. One of the ways the author conveys this theme is through title. The title conveys the theme by including one of the most important parts of the story, which was when the piano teacher lets the main character have the beautiful umbrella that she wanted. This affected the main character greatly, because she was already upset with her mom for not being there, then the piano teacher gives the umbrella, so then the main character says to the piano teacher I wish you were my mother. That s probably why the author decided to choose that title, because it was such an effective and important moment for the character and the story in general.... • 55. The Importance Of A Law Enforcement Officer Besides preventing crime and protecting the public, the job of a law enforcement officer consists of integrity, honesty and humility. Officers of the law are held to a higher standard than other individuals that hold public service positions. Therefore, there are policies and procedures in place that require more from them while they are performing their duties. Due to the high level of integrity expected from law enforcement officers, truthfulness and a high standard of ethical behavior is required. However, some officers fall short, and departments are faced with the decision on how to discipline officers who fail to meet the expectations that come with working for law enforcement. Police organizations should have policies in place that protect officers, as well as reprimand law enforcement officers when the engage in wrongdoings. When officers lie, they risk termination of their job based on their dishonesty in regard to their career, as well as their lack of better judgment. In the case of Kitsap County Deputy Sheriff s Guild v. Kitsap County, the sheriff s department terminated a deputy based on his untruthfulness and unstable behavior (Spector, 2008). The department felt that the officer s integrity was in question, and because of his unpredictable behavior he would no longer be useful as a law enforcement officer for their department. In the beginning, a judge felt that termination of Deputy LaFrance s position was not a reasonable discipline decision appropriate to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
