In Anselm s On the Fall of the Devil he says, [The devil] should not have known
that he would be punished if he sinned (93). Which means that God was right in not
telling the devil that there would be consequences for his actions. Anselm defends
this claim by discussing the devil s free will, the intent behind the devil s actions if
the devil knew about the punishments these actions would bring and the impact that

There is another point , which is evident in the detective stories we have read. This
is that the detective seems to be an amateur and someone who doesn t like the
Formal Police Service. Take Dupin for example. He said this about the Parisian
Police: The Parisian Police, so much extolled for acumen, are cunning, but no more.
This gives the reader the impression that Dupin doesn t like the Police and that
Dupin thinks a lot of himself. This is also apparent with Holmes.
There was a case in The Speckled Band when Holmes criticised the
Police because they did not search the room thoroughly. He said: We will have to

Preface
Within this paper I will describe Adorno and Horkheimer best known work in their
article, The Cultural Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception. I will describe in
great detail their concept of the culture industry and its mass deception on society.
Then, I will compare Adorno and Horkheimer s view of the creator and receiver to
that of the Birmingham School touching on both their similarities and differences.
Lastly, I will explain both schools influence on sociology and sociological research
concerning mass cultural production and describe how an empirical study based on
both schools would compare.
Horkheimer Adorno The Culture Industry
Theodore Adorno and Max Horkheimer studied Sociology within called the Frankfurt
School. The Frankfurt school was founded in 1924 in Germany at Goethe University.
The aim of the Frankfurt school, according to Horkheimer, was to study the
interconnection between the economic life of society, the psychic development of the
Structuralism is based off looking at the structures, or the bigger picture within a
study. Since Adorno and Horkheimer are concerned with the mass deception that is
created by the larger structures in society such as the entertainment industry, an
empirical study today would look similar to that. The study could focus on the use
of advertisements to create mass deception but it would not be a study of individual
behavior as so much one of the larger institutions within society. Methods that
would be used would be perhaps a literature reviews, a survey on different
advertisements and their purpose and a survey of people s perceptions of

Within the last century or so, much of the critical interpretation on Dante s Divine
Comedy has been part of what is sometimes called symbolic literature. Symbolistic
literature usually contains superimposed ideas conceive by the writer s
imagination, which is based on a collection of religious and culturally opinionated
ideas that the poet used to fashion the story but does not literally invent. The poet s
view of the world is skewed by the time in which they live, the way they were
brought up, and in part by cultural idealisms. Because of this, interpretation of
Dante s book is restricted to a select group of critics and interpreters. Interpretation
of symbolic literature aims to reveal the true meaning behind the text, which is
usually extremely difficult to translate as we can only guess what the author really

The Strange Situation By Bowlby
The aim of this study was to tell whether or not children interacted differently in a
strange situation as well as to explore attachment and exploratory behaviour. The
children were placed under different conditions in order to tell how they reacted,
these conditions included being placed in a room with a carer, a stranger entering
the room, and being left in the room alone, these conditions were used to observe
attachment theories. Introduction: Child attachment has been a topic that has been
greatly researched by both Psychologists and researchers alike, particularly the
study called Strange situation by Bowlby (1969) Bowlby believed that most mental
health issues could be related to early childhood behaviour. He believed that all
childhood attachment was an instinctive behaviour and was activated when children
were put in a stressful situation, and this seemed to enhance emotions such as
separation, fear and insecurity (Bowlby, 1969) he also stated that fear of strangers
is an instinctive reaction as it promotes the survival mechanism. Babies are expected
to show attachment behaviours from very early on, and due to this they display
social releases in order to increase proximity to a mother figure, these releases

As I contemplated on what my cultural plunge was going to be, it made me realize
that I am lucky to say that I have been exposed and acquainted with maybe more
than the usual. My ex husband is Middle Eastern, I am Mexican, and I have homo
sexual friends, and have and had friends that are African American, Caucasian,
Japanese, Filipino, Jewish, and Korean. I finally chose to explore more of the Asian
culture because although I have friends that are Asian I liked to know more about

Although not sold in its original form at our common grocery stores, we normally see
the flavor being used in teas and smoothies. Then there was the mangosteen. It is
another purple fruit. It is creamy and citrusy with a hint of peach. Second to last is
the Lychee. This is a common Asian fruit that is small and white in the inside and
has a grape like texture when eaten. Lastly was the Durian, sadly the worst one of
them. It has hard spiky husk that needed to be cracked opened. I was warned about
this one but didn t think it was going to be as bad as it was. It smelled like skunk
spray/ sewage. I tried to taste it but didn t. We immediately threw it away. The smell
was horrible. A lady who I spoke to at the store prior to buying the fruit just told me
that it was an acquired taste and smell, but I didn t expect what we experienced.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed going through and tasting each fruit. It definitely was an
experience and an eye opener to the different types of fruit out there besides your
usual bananas, strawberries, and oranges.
Ultimately I have to say that I enjoyed this overall experience. It has opened up my
eyes to many different cultures and definitely different way of eating. Since my
visit, I have bought and Asian inspired cook book and plan to make a few dishes
with ingredients that are only found at Asian markets. Oh and next time I decided to

There was one day where I woke up feeling like if I was going to win the lottery
and it gave me a heads up that something good was going to just by the way I woke

Socrates is a wise man he does not willingly want to die he is obviously not suicidal
his quest for knowledge is far too great but moderate. Although his charismatic
personality may have interfered with the way he approached the trial seeming far to
sarcastic to the jury. Perhaps to question their process in trail and punishments that
don t fit his crime or many other crimes, making the viewers form questions in their
mindabout their own government, which is what Socrates whole being has been
about, helping people think about thinking. Socrates didn t agree with their
decision but he isn t going to return a wrong with a wrong so it adds meaning to his
tone. Xenophon says But what they didn t make clear and without it the arrogance
of his tone is bound to appear rather foolish is this: he had already decided that for
him death was preferable to life. (pg.41).
For instance, he offered other forms of punishments that could ve fit the crime better
in his opinion like getting free meals for life but the jury opted for death which is
severe. He keeps his stance and doesn t fear the outcome because in begging for his
life would be cowardly which would lead to an inferior life he wouldn t want to
