This document provides a unit plan for an early elementary health class focusing on safety topics like fire safety, traffic safety, water safety, and first aid. The unit will last 4-5 weeks with lessons and activities including designing fire escape plans, explaining why their plan is safest, and creating posters about safety strategies. Formative assessments include worksheets, posters, and class discussions. The summative assessment is a group poster project applying safety tips from each lesson. The document also discusses classroom management strategies, meeting student needs, and seeking feedback to improve the unit plan.
2. Early Elementary Health
• My Unit plan is for early elementary health on safety
• Fire safety, Traffic safety, Water safety, First aid care and prevention
• This lesson will be about 4-5 weeks long (4-5 classes)
• Standards
• 1.2 Escape plans
• 4.5 strategies for bicycle safety
3. Objectives
• Students will individually design an escape plan to safely get out of the
classroom incase of a fire
• Students will explain to the class about why they feel the escape plan they
designed is the safest.
• By the end of class students will make a poster in a group of three and show
at least 3 safe and unsafe strategies.
4. Formative Assessment
• Worksheets
• Students will be giving worksheets to complete at the end of some of the lessons to show
that they have and understanding of the material.
• Posters
• Students will make posters at the end of some lessons either individually or in small groups.
• Class Discussion
• Throughout the unit there will be multiple class discussions about the material being taught.
Students will be asked multiple questions about prior knowledge and new material. If
students need help answering a question they can “phone a friend” (ask a friend) to help
them out.
5. Summative Assessment
• Final Project
• Students will be in groups of 3 or 4 and will be asked to make a poster of all the safety
tips they just learned about throughout the unit. Students will have to come up with 3-
4 points about each lesson.
• Throughout the unit I have kept all of the notes and worksheets the students complete
this is where the students can use these to help them come up with the 3-4 pints if
needed.
6. Questioning
• What do you wear on your head when riding a bike?(convergent)
• Can you differentiate a poison from a non-poison? (analysis)
• List three fire safety strategies for getting out of a building
safely?(Knowledge)
7. Revision
• Self direct Lesson Plan
• I added a rubric or check list so students knew/had a better understanding on what they
were looking for when doing the assignment on poison.
• I added a video to show the students about poisons to show at the beginning of class to get
the hooked and engaged to learn.
• Indirect lesson plan
• I incorporated an example of an escape plan so the students know what I am looking for in
theirs.
• Revised one of the objectives so student know they will be sharing with the whole class not
just in a small group.
8. Classroom Management
• Depending on if I have desks or tables will determine on how I will set up
my classroom.
• If I had tables during the first few weeks I would observe the students and see who is
talkative and/or disruptive.
• Later on in the school year I would split these students up to help limit disruptions.
• During the first class the students will come up with classroom rules that will
be followed throughout the year.
• Will have a stop light at the front of the room.
9. Meeting Specific Needs
• Hearing Impairments
• For students like Phoenix, when taking notes I will provide an outline that goes with the
notes with a few blank spots to make sure the students are following along. To go along
with this will be a PowerPoint that has the word that should be in the blank.
• Attention Difficulties
• Using a PowerPoint that has pictures and items that will catch students attention. To go
along with the PowerPoint could have a graphic organizer to help keep the students on
track.
• Have videos in the lesson this may keep the students attention of longer it is something
different from just the teacher talking the whole time.
10. Comments/Concerns?
• If you were in elementary school doing this learning plan would you be
excited to learn about it?
• How can I improve my Unit Plan?
