A DETAILED LESSON PLAN
IN MATHEMATICS 7
I. Objectives
At the end of the session, the students must able to:
A. Identify the steps in evaluating algebraic expressions
B. Apply the steps in evaluating algebraic expressions
C. Show appreciation in working with group activity
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Evaluating Algebraic Expression
Reference: E-Math by Orlando A. Oronce and Marilyn O. Mendoza
Instructional Materials: Visual aids, Graphic Organizer PowerPoint presentation,
laptop, projector, activity envelope, chalk and board.
III. Instructional Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Daily routine
1. Prayer
Class let’s all stand up.
Before we start, ____________ lead
the prayer.
2. Greetings
Good Morning class.
3. Checking of Attendance
Is everybody present for today?
B. Priming/Activating PriorKnowledge
1. Drill
Class, find the answer to the following
multi operation mathematical
expression by connecting the
A student will lead the prayer.
Dear God ……… Amen.
Good Morning Sir.
Yes sir, everybody is present today.
expression in column A to the
corresponding answer in column B.
Very good!
2. Review
How do we solve multi operation
mathematical expression?
Very Good!
And what does PEMDAS stand for?
That is correct! We solve multi
operation expression by following the
operation order of Parenthesis,
Exponent, Multiplication, Division,
Addition, and Subtraction.
C. Lesson Development
1. Motivation / Activity
Class, where do we usually hear the
word substitution?
And how do we substitute in
basketball?
That’s right.
Now class, we will be having an activity
called “Sub me in”.
(The teacher will present a PowerPoint
presentation of the activity “Sub me
Sir we solve multi operation mathematical
expression by following the rules of PEMDAS.
The students will state the answer.
Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, Subtraction.
Students will raise their hands.
Sir we hear substitution in basketball,
volleyball, etc...
Sir the player is replaced by another player.
in”).
Let A=1 H=8 O=15 V=22
B=2 I= 9 P= 16 W=23
C=3 J=10 Q=17 X=24
D=4 K=11 R=18 Y=25
E=5 L=12 S=19 Z=26
F=6 M=13 T=20
G=7 N=14 U=21
Find the equivalent value of the given
words by substituting the numerical
value above to each letter of the word
and adding all the numerical digits.
For example
H U M B L E
8 + 21 + 13 + 2 + 12 + 5 = 61
Do you get it class?
Are you ready class?
Who would like to try the first word?
K N O W L E D G E
Now for the second word.
H A R D W O R K
How about the last word?
A T T I T U D E
Very good class, does everyone have
the same answers?
2. Analysis
What did we do in our activity?
Correct. And how did we find the value
of the given words?
And then what’s next?
Very good.
Class, when a number is substituted or
Yes sir.
Yes sir, we are ready.
A student will be called to answer.
K N O W L E D G E
11 + 14 + 15 + 23 + 12 + 5 + 4 + 7 + 5 = 96
H A R D W O R K
8 + 1 + 18 + 4 + 23 + 15 + 18 + 11 = 98
A T T I T U D E
1 + 20 + 20 + 9 + 20 + 21 + 4 + 5 = 100
Yes sir.
Sir we find the numerical value of the given
words.
Sir we substitute the corresponding value in
each letter.
Sir we perform the indicated operation, we
add all the value.
replace for the variable in a given
algebraic expression, the expression
takes a numerical value. And finding
the value is what we call “Evaluating
the Algebraic Expression”.
Let’s do this example.
Evaluate 6x2 + 3 when
a. x = 0
b. x = -2
c. x = 1/2
For letter a, how do we evaluate?
What should we do first?
Correct. Can someone show us how to
substitute the value of x in our
equation?
Very good!
Now what is the next step?
Since we got here a multi operation
equation, what should we do?
Excellent! Can someone demonstrate
on how to apply the rules of PEMDAS
in our equation?
That is correct!
Now for letter b, x = -2.
Who would like to try following the
same steps?
And for the last example, x =1/2
3. Abstraction
Now class, in evaluating algebraic
Sir we substitute the given value of x in the
equation.
A student will be called to substitute the value
of x.
6(0)2 + 3 =
We perform the indicated operations.
Sir we follow the rules of PEMDAS.
6(0)2 + 3 =
6(0) + 3 =
0 + 3 = 3
A student will be called to answer.
6x2 + 3 =
6(-2)2 + 3 =
6(4) + 3 =
24 + 3 = 27
6x2 + 3 =
6(1/2)2 + 3 =
6(1/4) + 3 =
6/4 + 3 =
Following the rules in adding dissimilar
fractions.
6/4 + 12/4 =18/4 or 9/2
1. Substitute the given value to the
expressions, what are the steps
that we need to follow?
Very good.
4. Application
Now that you already know how to
evaluate algebraic expressions, we
will be having a group activity. I will
divide you into two groups. Each
group will choose their leaders. The
leader will be the one who can ask
me about the activity and he is also
responsible for dividing the tasks
between the members of the
group.
Each group will be given an activity
envelope where you will find the
materials for the activity and the
expressions that your group will be
going to evaluate.
Now, the group activity will be
scored according to this standard.
