CAHSEE PREP
Small Group Instruction:
Math and English
Small Group Instruction
• OFL provides direct instruction in Math, English, and Science to
supplement the independent study curriculum.
• SGI classes emphasize knowledge and skills critical to
independent learning and being successful on the CAHSEE
and other state assessments.
• Students generally earn 1-2 credits per academic month (even
more during CAHSEE Prep!) These credits go toward the
minimum of 5 credits students are required to earn every
academic period.
• These classes focus on both reviewing foundational skills and
helping students understand more advanced concepts.
• SGI Teachers also provide tutoring (may be mandatory
depending on student needs)
• Our goal is student proficiency
CAHSEE
• California High School Exit Exam – students must pass it
in order to earn a diploma
• Take it the first time in 10th grade
• 2 sections – English and Math (each about 72 questions,
plus an essay on the English portion)
• Exams cover material from 8th, 9th, and 10th grade
• Over 2 days (Tuesday & Wednesday, February 4 & 5).
Each section usually takes about 3 hours, but could take
longer. (It is untimed.)
December CAHSEE Prep
• The bulk of prep will be delivered in January, but this year
we wanted to go a little deeper into the content to give our
students a more well-rounded instruction.
• From November 17th - December 12th, students will come
twice a week and receive both Math and English
instruction in one 3-hour block. (Look to the flyer for
schedules.)
• If students complete all in-class work and homework and
pass all tests, they will receive 2 credits during this prep
period.
January CAHSEE Prep
• 4 weeks, 8 class sessions (January 5th-February 2nd)
• Note: January 19th – no class for MLK day)
• Students will come twice a week and receive both Math
and English instruction in one 3-hour block
• If students complete all in-class work and homework and
pass all quizzes and tests, they will receive 6 credits
during the prep period.
• Students will not have to go to their regular appointments
with their independent study teachers and will not be able
to turn in any units besides CAHSEE Prep units.
Student Expectations
• Attendance is mandatory. If students are more than 15
minutes late, they will be considered absent.
• If a student is absent, a parent/guardian must call with an
excusable absence
• If a student misses 3 times, they will be considered truant
and at risk of withdrawal
• Absent and behind students will have to come to the
center for mandatory make-up time.
Why CAHSEE Prep?
• The CAHSEE can be tricky, and
may cover material students
haven’t encountered in awhile
• We at OFL-Pasadena are
committed to all students passing
• Reviewing material is always good
• 350 to pass, but students should try
their best for proficiency or above
• Passing lets students know that
they are on the right track; this is
especially important in independent
study
How can parents help?
• Make sure students come to their CAHSEE appointment
times
• Encourage them to finish their work at home
• Ensure students study/review concepts they learned
• If an emergency arises that causes the student to be
absent, make sure the student makes up the missed day.
• Communicate with the SGI teachers regarding any
questions/suggestions/comments you may have.
What can students do to best prepare?
• Complete all homework
• Ask for help on what you don’t understand
• Go over notes and formulas you will need to know for the
test on a regular basis.
• Get a study buddy and test each other on items that will
be covered
• Write questions down regarding anything that you do not
understand while you are going over your notes
• Read anything – novels, newspapers, magazines,
whatever
• Sleep well
• Eat well
A Positive Attitude Matters!
• CAHSEE Prep is a team environment - Our goal is to
cross the finish line together!
• We encourage participation and collaboration from all
students
• We hope to make CAHSEE Prep as positive as possible.
It’s not just about passing a required test, but making the
most out of everything we do and learn!
• Believing that you are capable and going to do well
actually relaxes and opens the brain, which makes it
ready to learn.
More details:
• What happens if students don’t pass?
• You will have more opportunities to take the test in the years to come.
• As a sophomore you only get one opportunity to take it, but every year after
that you can continue taking it until you pass. Once you pass the test you will
never need to take it again.
• What happens if students don’t complete the work to earn credits?
• You will miss out on learning material you will be tested on.
• You will not earn credits
• You will be running the risk of withdrawal if you do not complete the minimum
monthly requirement
• What if there are special circumstances that preclude the student
from attending?
• There will be make up sessions for special circumstances. If a student cannot
attend regularly, it is best to contact our lead teacher. Jeff Moreno, to discuss
options.
• What materials do they need?
• Please bring your OFL Planner and a pencil
