•
•
•
Phaseolus, pisum, cajanus, glycine etc..are used as
vegetables.
Oil extracted from the seeds ofArachis hypogea is
used as vegetable oil and also used in cosmetics and
soap industry.
Sesbania andcrotalaria yield good quality of fibres.
Dalbergia sisso, Dalbergia latifolia, Pterocarpus are
valuable timber yielding plants.
Medicago sativa, different species oflatifolium are
used as fodder.
•
•
•
•
Indigofera tinctoria are the source of indigo dye
which is used for painting dyeing and printing.
Red resinous substance 'santalin' extracted from the
woods ofPterocarpus santalinus is used for dyeing
clothes and cotton silk.
The medicine liquorice extracted from the roots and
stem ofGlycyrrhiza glabra is used in cough syrups.
Decoction obtained from the roots ofMogania is
used to relieve pain and induce sleep.
•
•
Clitoria ternatea, Wysteria chinensis, Siphora
japonica ,
Sesbania sesban are used as ornamental
plants.
Gum obtained fromAstragalus gummiferus is used
in in textile industry, cosmetics etc..
Wisteria chinensis
Sesbania sesban
Sophora japonica
Phylogeny
•
•
•
•
•
Bentham and Hooker placed the family
leguminosae in the order rosales due to the
presence of perigynous flowers and absence of
syncarpy.
3 subfamilies under leguminosae are:
Papilonoideae
Caesalpinoideae
Mimosoideae
•
•
•
•
Takthajan called papilionaceous as Faboideae and
kept Fabaceae in the order Fabales.
Conqruist considered Fabaceae as most advanced
in the order of Fabales.
Engler and prantl placed leguminosae under the
order Rosales of Archichlamydeae and class
Dichotyledonae.
Hutchinson treated Leguminosae as a separate
order Leguminales which contains 3 independent
families: Mimosaceae, Caesalpiniaceae and
Papilionaceae.
