Development Of Drugs With High Potency And Inhibitory...
Summary of research plan
Development of drugs with high potency and inhibitory activity against specific activating mutation,
while showing significantly less activity against wild type mutations, made testing specific sensitizing
mutation necessary. (1) (EGFR) T790M mutation a successful example of a biomarker for non small
cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment with Osimertinib that gained a wide acceptance in clinical
practice in Europe and US (), One question that needs to be asked, however, is whether testing for
similar mutations in different cancer will be of clinical value. an unknown subpopulation of patients
with CRC will have an activating EGFR mutation, such as L858R, which is thought to activate the
receptor constitutively, regardless of ligand status promoting cellular proliferation and growth. in
patients with colorectal cancer, Targeting activated EGFR, hypothetically, will lead to growth
inhibition of cancer cell dependent on the oncogenic drive of sensitising EGFR mutation. This project
aims to investigate the role of EGFR (L858R/+/+) as a biomarker for AZD 9291 (Osimertinib)
treatment, using SW48 cell line with a wild type mutation of EGFR and Heterozygous knockin of
EGFR activating mutation (L858R/+/+), to investigate the mechanism of resistances if cells developed
resistance and to test the overlap between Osimertinib and AZD5363, palbocidib and selumetinib.
This work should improve treatment outcome for patients with CRC with EGFR sensitising mutation

Biography on Charles Dickens
This greatest of Victorian writers was born in Landport, Portsmouth, on February 7, 1812. His father
John worked as a clerk in the Navy Payroll Office in Portsmouth. The elder Dickens was transfered
several times, first to London, then to Chatham, and finally, in 1822, back to London, where the
family lived in Camden Town. John Dickens was constantly in debt, and in 1824 he was imprisoned in
Marshalsea debtor s prison (Southwark). Charles was forced to leave school at the age of 12 and go to
work in a bootblack factory to help support the Dickens family. It was his personal experience of
factory work and the living conditions of the poor that created in Dickens the compassion which was
to mark his literary works such as Oliver Twist. Dickens was released from the purgatory of Warren s
Blacking Factory when his father received a legacy from a relative, and could finally pay his debts and
be set free from Marshalsea. Charles went to Wellington House Academy for two years, then took
work at Gray s Inn as a clerk. Dickens worked as a Parliamentary reporter before finally moving on to
The Morning Chronicle in 1834. His first published work appeared in Monthly Magazine in December
1833, and he followed it with nine more, penning his name as Boz to the last two articles. The
pseudonym Boz was drawn from a pet name for his younger brother when they were children. In 1836
his articles were compiled and published as Sketches by Boz . Shortly after Boz was published,

There are two board approaches of TQM, which are hard approach and soft approach (Hill, 1991). The
hard approach used the statistical methods to emphasize continuous improvement and get better result
of productivity and profits whereas soft approach is to create strong organization culture and meet
customers demand by focusing on leadership, employee involvement and culture change (Fotopoulos
Psomas, 2009). So, there are three TQM fundamental pillars according to most TQM approaches,
which are top management commitment, continuous improvement and employee involvement (Slack,
Chambers Johnston, 2007). Top managers can improve the performance and effectively change the
culture of an organization (Kaynak, 2013) in ensuring the successful implementation of TQM
(Coulson Thomas, 1991; Doyle, 1992). Xerox s top management used the benchmarking strategy
which is a standard or point of reference in measuring or judging quality, value, etc (Webster, 1979) to
incorporate ideas into own operation by identifying and learning the best perform critical business
functions of other organizations. For examples, Xerox studied the ideas from Cummins Engine
Company to improve production scheduling and ideas from L.L.Bean for improving the distribution
system (Camp, 1992). Besides, top managers of Xerox were required to promote and ensure their
employees stay on track with the new quality strategy in their routine

The Spanish Ballad, Or Romancero
The spanish ballad, or romancero, is a form of poetry which, closely linked to the medieval epic, is
passed down by word of mouth and open to interpretation by the performers and audience. The ballad
Romance de Moraima (or yo me era mora Moraima) is a romancero fronterizo which is relatively
brief, and follows the standard octosyllabic structure. The ballad contains the key feature of assonating
units, yet does not strictly rhyme with one vowel, i.e. a but varies between a , o , and a paragogic e .
Moraima opens quite abruptly and dramatically, as is the fashion of the romancero. No time is spared
in small details; instead the sensational tale begins immediately. Interestingly, the description is in the
past era even though one would imagine that she is still the same person, which gives the impression
that something drastic has changed. The first line lands with a punch. The bold statement of her name
«yo me era mora Moraima« identifies the protagonist and throws the listener in. The yo is emphatic,
as is the last positioning of Moraima, and together they frame the line to deliver impact. There is
strong alliteration and repetition of the mo sound with Moraima, mora and morilla, all of which
contribute to a compelling description, and draw attention to her islamic beliefs. The choice of the
name Moraima, when juxtaposed with mora, emphasises her religious affiliation which would have
been controversial at that time due to the Reconquista. This play on

Freshman Year Transcripts
Transcripts Throughout my four years of high school, my GPAs have been pretty good. Spring
semester of freshman year was by far the best because I managed to end the year with a 4.0. However,
my classes started to get a little more challenging to me and after that semester, my GPAs started to go
down. I would have to say that my worst year was junior year. I ended the year off with four B s and
only three A s. I would definitely have to say that I let my classes get the best of me that year. Now
that it s my senior year, I now know to never let stress interfere with my grades because it is not worth
it. I hope I can achieve my goal of ending the year with a 4.0.

they align with a powerful coven that too wants the wolf pack out of Dallas. (The witches and
vampires want them gone because the pack runs the city; not much goes on without the wolves
knowing.) This coven cooks up a spell to banish any and all werewolf (triggered and untriggered)
from Dallas. Much like the spell in TVD, they can t cross the city line. When this happens they head
to New Orleans where their sister pack is; The Crescents. Hayley and the pack welcome them with
open arms and offer to help them find a way to return home. Carrie and Hayley become quick friends
and for now, they agree to merge the two packs into one. Both woman remain alphas and both are very

Informative Speech Manuscript This is Rebecca Lohsen. She was a healthy 17 year old high school
student and swimmer from New Jersey. In 2006, she died from a MRSA infection, and it s an infection
that s really hard to cure because it s caused by a kind of bacteria called a superbug. (Infectious
Diseases Society of America, September 2007, para. 1). It s important to understand what superbugs
are and how they come about because they re a present and ongoing problem, and everyone here
might just be affected by them. I ve long been interested in the problem of superbugs, and in sharing
the information, because it s a threat to public health that I think not many people know about. So, in

For example, you may have heard of the woman in Reno this January who died to a nightmare
superbug because the infection could not be cured by every available antibiotic in the United States
(Nevada Public Radio, 17 January 2017, para. 3). On the Infectious Diseases Society of America
website was the story of how a 19 year old college student, Meredith Littlejohn, died to a superbug
after spending time in an intensive care unit. (Infectious Diseases Society of America, n.d., para. 1 3).
These are only two of thousands who die every year. And so clearly our misuse and overuse of
antibiotics have created very serious, negative outcomes. Contributing to these negative outcomes, it s
not just the doctors unnecessarily giving us antibiotics, as I mentioned before, but it s also the
antibiotics in the food we eat. To reduce costs in farms, animals are held in unhealthy conditions, so in
order to keep them healthy, farmers give them antibiotics. In 2010, a testimony of Dr. Stuart Levy, a
professor of biology and medicine, explained how him and his team concluded that chickens almost
immediately showed resistant bacteria after giving them antibiotics. They also concluded that the
resistant bacteria spread easily to the to the workers, to the other animals, and even to the flies. Keep
in mind pretty much all the other animals are fed antibiotics too, not just chickens (Alliance for the
Prudent Use of Antibiotics, 14 July 2010, para. 5 6). It s widely

Essay on Opposites Attract in Antony and Cleopatra
Opposites Attract in Antony and Cleopatra
William Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra is a play that is centred around a pair of historical lovers
from two distinct cultures, Mark Antony from Rome and Queen Cleopatra from Egypt. The Roman
and Egyptian cultures have vastly different norms and social ideas that are almost complete polar
opposites in nature. These conflicting views are instrumental in the way that Cleopatra and Antony
act. These two characters are so great in their respective societies that they serve as models to look to,
although Antony may not be everybody s perfect vision of what a Roman should be. It is also
important to look at not only what these two characters think of their cultures, but what cultural ...

In addition to this way of designating the two title characters, Anne Barton has compiled a list of
expressions used to describe Cleopatra and Antony. She first discusses references to Antony:
In the course of the tragedy, Antony is called the noble Antony, the courteous Antony, the firm Roman,
Mars, a mine of bounty, the triple pillar of the world, the demi atlas of this earth, the lord of lords, of
infinite virtue, the crown o the earth, and the garland of the war. These are only a few of the
celebratory epithets. He is also poor Antony, a libertine, the abstract of all faults that all men follow, a
gorgon, a sworder, an old ruffian, a doting mallard, the ne er lust wearied Antony, and a strumpet s
fool. (47) All of the honorific titles given to Antony suggest to the audience that he is indeed more
than a mortal man. Even in the titles given to Antony that are less than respectful, he is still seen as
something other than an average human being. Being called a gorgon , for example, would not make
Antony seem like a hero, but he would still be seen as something more than human. Many times a
description of Antony will include the word the , implying that he alone is this great, and has no
counterpart.
Cleopatra is also more than a simple mortal human in the role of the Queen of Egypt, as she is
constantly referred to as the personification of Egypt. She even refers to herself in the same way. The

Compare The Poems I Wander As A Lonely Cloud By William...
Comparison and Contrast Research Paper The poems I wander as a lonely cloud and To an athlete
dying young are equally different, and similar in many ways. How are these poems different let alone
similar? you may ask. Well in this essay I will compare and contrast the poems that will give you
insight on how the characteristics of these two poems differentiate and, are comparable. For example
tone, symbolism, and structure each play a big part in both poems. However in essay you will also
know the role of these three characteristics, and how each one can makes the poems whole. I wander
as a lonely cloud by William Wordsworth represents that loneliness can bring the bliss of solitude. In
the poem Wordsworth start it off with the speaker wandering in valleys and high hills. The speaker
compares himself as a cloud because a cloud represents loneliness and bemusement, and that
represents the speaker s feelings. The speaker continues to wander until he sees daffodils by a lake
dancing. As the speaker watches the daffodils he explains their dancing as carefree, gleeful and happy.
I saw a crowd a host of daffodils; Beside a lake, beneath the trees, fluttering in the breeze. (Lines 4 6).
The speaker gives the daffodils personality to show the daffodils have humanlike qualities which gives
the flowers life. Along the margin of bay: Ten Thousand I saw at a glance, Tossing their heads in
sprightly dance. (Lines 10 12). After watching the dancing daffodils, the speaker then realizes that the
flowers give him a gift, and that is the bliss of solitude. This gift of solitude helps the speaker out of
his lonesome state and, whenever he feels lonely he remembers the bliss of solitude. And then my
heart fills with pleasure, And the daffodils dance. (Lines 21 24). The speaker thinks of the daffodils,
because of the solitude in his heart which this solitude gives him joy and peace. The speaker comes to
realize that loneliness doesn t last forever, and with solitude he will find serenity and comfort. To an
Athlete Dying Young the speaker talks about a young athlete that died at a young age. The first stanza
of the poem starts out with a cheerful tone as the speaker is remembering the athlete winning a big
race,

Mussolini Fascism Analysis
The popularity of Mussolini s fascism among returning veterans was not only because of the
comradery that Mussolini shared with them, but also the role that veterans played in fascismo. Welk
(1938, 8 9), notes a publication in which, Mussolini campaigned for the right of returned soldiers to
lead Italy towards becoming a great nation and a new world power. In order to understand how
powerful this image was, it is important to understand the Post war Italian economy. Though Italy had
claimed victory in 1918, it came at the cost of the lives of approximately 600 thousand Italian soldiers,
and nearly everyone in Italy outside of war profiteers exited the war more impoverished. Particularly,
the transition from war to peace time production was a slow and painful process. Thus, while Italy
claimed military victory, the post war economy was not only crippled but also disorganized. This left
laborers eager to lend their ears to a solution, and two powerful but contrasting ideologies to vie for
their support. The first to consider is Communism. A year before, communism had claimed an
important victory in the Russian revolution of 1917. The decisive victory of the Russian proletariat in
Welk s (1938, 9 11) opinion provoked Italian communists to encourage the same in Italy. The
following years were characterized by strikes, and worker s seizing the means of production, as the
working class attempted to seize power throughout the nation. One notable example occurred on April
10, 1919,

The Handmaid s Tale And Gattaca
A dystopian text is a manifestation of society s deepest fears. How is this explored in The Handmaid s
Tale and Gattaca? A comparison of dystopian texts explores contemporary issues of society and
integrates them into an alien world. The Handmaid s Tale by Margaret Atwood illustrates the nature of
society as far from ideal, and the destructive nature of oppression. Similarly, Gattaca by Andrew
Niccol epitomises the characteristics of a dystopian text, by highlighting the subversion of natural
processes, suppression of identity and oppression present in society. Both texts explore similar themes
that reflect a society s deepest fears to the audience dehumanisation. Oppression is a major fret in the
contemporary world. Alluding to Ronald Raegan s policy of supporting the oppressive apartheid in
South Africa, Atwood in The Handmaid s Tale, conveys a society where oppression is accepted
through forced collaboration and a fear of consequences if not followed. Offred s internalised
oppression is evident when she describes that the Handmaids are treated as two legged wombs, that s
all: sacred vessels, ambulatory chalices . This is a metaphor manifesting how the Handmaids come to
accept that their purpose is to produce children and showing Offred s personal oppression and her
willingness to comply with the regime. Gillead also manipulates the Bible as a power tool to
encourage the citizens to remain content with the theocratic nature of society. This is obvious

Colosseum And Pantheon Essay
All ancient cultures around the world, are Identified with the way in which they choose to build their
cities and connecting infrastructure. The Romans seem to have been the king of architecture,
especially when, they as a people were able to build a lot of public buildings, which are grand in size
and opulence. Many of these structures still exist today, The Colosseum, and Pantheon. But the
Romans were able also to build roads, bridges, and aqueducts. All of these things mentioned above
were ONLY made possible by two things, Concrete and arches ! Let s talk about concrete. It was a
Roman invention and I have taking a direct quote from our reading to describe what concrete is;

This glue allowed the Romans to stick together many different materials, therefor making a composite
structure. These composite structure had attributes far greater than that of let s say a wall just made of
loose stone. The Romans were also fond of the Etruscan Arch The arch was a way to use less material
when building a bridge or aqueduct. They made the arches, reinforced or glued together with the
concrete. These two things, concrete and the arch, paved the way (Literally) For the expansion of the
Roman Empire. Through the use of building roads and bridges they could have a fast and easy way to
move men and material to and from different parts of the Empire. When it came to bridges the use of
arches allowed the Romans to span great distances with ⅔ rds less material and labor. The arch also
performed a great duty in supplying the city of Rome with fresh drinking and bathing water via the
aqueducts that connected distance water reservoirs to the city of Rome.
Again the importance of these two simple inventions and use of the arch, helped sustain and propel the
Roman culture and influence in the entire mediterranean area. It is simple amazing that much of what
the ancient Romans built is still here today and not only just in Italy, but wherever the Romans

science fiction, adventure novel, the book is written in first person point of view; viewing the main
character of the book named Axel. Journey to the Center of the Earth takes place in many places, in
the beginning we got to know the characters in the town of Hamburg, Germany. For a couple of
chapters in the middle they were in Iceland in the capital, Reykjavik. After that they were at Sneffels
an extinct volcano that leads to the Center of the Earth, the mood changed a lot throughout the novel
being happy through the beginning, dark in the middle, and serious at the end. At the start of the book
it takes place on May 24, 1863.The setting influences the book because of being in the early times
Jules Verne thought it might had been possible to go to the center of the earth. The theme is telling us
to try something new and not to let your fear hold you back from trying those things.

Changes in America s Agriculture From 1865-1900 Essay
Through the period of 1865 1900, America s agriculture underwent a series of changes .Changes that
were a product of influential role that technology, government policy and economic conditions played.
To extend on this idea, changes included the increase on exported goods, do the availability of
products as well as the improved traveling system of rail roads. In the primate stages of these
developing changes, farmers were able to benefit from the product, yet as time passed by,
dissatisfaction grew within them. They no longer benefited from the changes (economy went bad), and
therefore they no longer supported railroads. Moreover they were discontented with the approach that
the government had taken towards the situation. After the civil ... Show more content on

Moreover, the document also helps visualize the linking of the regions in which national markets
emerged, as well urbanization and industry expansion. To extend on this idea, immigration grew
alongside industry expansion. For more land became accessible for sale, which was an advantage to
those whom jobs (like those building railroads or working in companies near them) called for them to
live near. Although the most convenient way to transport goods was using the railroad, it also
worsened the economic hardship that farmers had, for the prices that they had to pay to export their
goods, were quite elevated. The rates as well as the lack of support from the government angered the
farmers, and lead them to form farmer alliances and the Grange, led by Oliver Hudson Kelly. Most
farmers, such as the prairie farmer in document C, sought state regulation on railroad freight rates and
pleaded the government consider making new law. As a response to this, government passed the
granger laws in Illinois, which protected farmers from being abused or discriminated through the high
tariffs on exporting their goods. This laws were later found unconstitutional by Supreme Court, and

Crazy Face Van Morrison, Music Review Essay
Crazy Face The song I chose to review is Crazy Face by Van Morrison on the album His Band and the
Street Choir . The tone color of this song is upbeat and jazzy, not so much inspirational, but laid back
and pleasant. The tempo is based around an 8th note signature, mostly displayed by the Hi hat in what
I would classify as allegretto. The instruments involved in this song are; a piano, a standard drum set
most likely a five piece with a standard 2 toms maybe 3, bass drum, snare, ride symbol, and a two
crash symbols, an acoustic guitar, a banjo, a ukulele, a mandolin, an electric base, an organ, a
saxophone, and last of all Van Morrison s drunken voice. The form of this song is extremely simple
yet very interesting and not common ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bridge is a 45 second saxophone solo. The rest of the instruments play the same verse over and
over in harmony, with cymbals and stressed guitar chords on the accent between the verses. All of this
is played underneath the saxophone which is practically singing its own improved song, which varies
from hitting high notes in the register to low arpeggios in the lower register. The saxophone plays call
and response with itself, which leads the listener to believe there are two saxophones, when in reality
one saxophone is dueling with itself. During the bridge not only is the saxophone emphasized, but the
organ plays the bass line on higher octaves on the same dynamics as the saxophone, so the bridge
focuses on the polyphonic relationship between the sax and the organ. After the bridge a sporadic
drum fill opens up for the first verse of the song (A) which is repeated just as the first time but more
emphasized, especially the vocals. After the verse the chorus follows, almost identical sounding to the
first chorus just with more emphasized vocals. The song then ends with an abrupt note, typical for

Many people assume that indigenous people have never made mistakes in the way they treat the non
human world around them. This is not entirely a reality; many indigenous peoples did not start with
already having traditions that treat the environment in positive and sustainable ways. With these
mistakes being made in the beginning, the most important thing is that indigenous people recognized
that their original ways harmed the non human world around them and that they must begin to do
something different to better treat nature. It is this way of thinking that has allowed for indigenous
people to maintain in their traditions ways that will support the land. Indigenous peoples of the United

One of the many traditions in the first salmon ceremony. This ceremony is one that is done every year
at the start of the fishing season for salmon. The first salmon ceremony is a way that the tribespeople
can show to the salmon people that they respect them and will not overfish the salmon.
The tribes believe that there is a salmon village under the sea. They would send a scout out and our
people would catch that first salmon. Once we treat that first salmon with respect it will go back and
tell the salmon people it was treated with great respect by our tribe, then it will bring the rest of the
people from the salmon village for us to be caught (Huchoosedah, 2:52 3:14)
The way that the Lushootseed people treat the salmon is the same way that they would treat another

their village they would put on their salmon appearance and be seen by others as salmon. The idea that
there is a village of salmon enforces the idea that salmon should be treated with the same respect as

National Incident Management System Response Paper
The Critical infrastructure, or CI, is a subcategory of infrastructure that includes those assets, systems,
and networks, whether physical or virtual, which are so vital that their failure or destruction would
have a debilitating impact on security, governance, public health and safety, public confidence,
commerce, or other societal factors (Bullock, Haddow, Coppola, 2016). According to the 2013 US
National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP) there are 16 of these sectors and throughout this paper
we will discuss a cyber attack on the water supply sector. The best way to discuss the above will be

49). In order for all of the leaders of the different infrastructures to be successful at eliminating or
mitigating such attacks they will need a common form of communication as all of their systems have
been proven to affect each other. One tool to help eliminate such communication barriers is the
National Incident Management System (NIMS). This system is a standardized management plan that
provides a core set of concepts for incident command and multi agency coordination during
emergency response (Kamien, 2012, p. 486). With such systems as NIMS the government realized that
no one system can work without the other and if one fails they all fail causing wide spread panic and
various other hurdles for emergency responders to respond to. It is up to the government to realize that
our world is no longer ran manually, but rather digitally so that we can better prepare for possible
cyber attacks on our key critical infrastructures.
Throughout this research we have shown the affects of a cyber attack on our water supply. We have
also evaluated the impact that a cyber attack could have on our water supply. Lastly we looked at the
probable third and fourth order effects from the cyber attack on this critical infrastructure to include
the effects on other critical infrastructures that may be affected by the initial cyber attack. If we do not
take the actions of those who seek to harm us through either a physical attack or cyber attack seriously
and work as a team we will fail as a

The Common Long Term Complications Of Diabetes Mellitus
One of the most common long term complications of diabetes mellitus is painful neuropathy. Diabetic
neuropathy is estimated to affect about 60 70% of all diabetes patients and can lead to foot ulcers,
amputations, and decreased quality of life. The most common form is chronic peripheral neuropathy
which results in pain and numbness in the extremities, usually described as a burning, tingling, or
steady aching pain.1 Patients may also feel increased sensitivity to pain or experience paresthesia, a
sensation of tingling, tickling, or prickling of the skin.1 According to current guidelines, intensive
glycemic control is very important for the prevention and reduction of peripheral neuropathy and other
microvascular complications.1,2 Medications used to help relieve nerve pain include duloxetine and
pregabalin (Lyrica®), which are both approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in
diabetic neuropathy. Other drug classes commonly used are antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and
opioids.3 Although there are many medications used for this condition, pain relief is often insufficient
for patients. Treatment is difficult due to the complicated pathophysiology of pain transmission and
the wide range of mechanisms of action of drugs used to treat pain. Therefore, there is a continued
need for additional medication options for this chronic painful condition. Lacosamide is an
anticonvulsant approved for use as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy for partial onset seizures.

What Was The Impact Of Radio Broadcasting In The 1930 s
Radio broadcasting left a major social impact on Americans. It delivered news, advertising, and
entertainment to the American household. The radio allowed Americans from across the United States
to be up to date on the latest political news, sports, and radio shows. Companies used the radio to
spread their product to the American living room. The radio left the greatest impact on society for the
variety of content it contained and how popular it was. In 1913, Edwin Armstrong invented a special
circuit that made long range radio transmission of voice and music practical (American). This
technological advancement made it convenient to use the radio as means of delivering the news.
Whether you lived in a rural countryside or in a packed city, you were able to get the news. Able to
broadcast weather reports, sports news, and entertainment to thousands of Americans, the radio proved
to be an invaluable resource. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

An Alien On Earth And Hunted Humans
Question One: If an alien race landed on Earth and hunted humans, we would need many different
protection methods. The five methods I think would benefit humans the most in an alien invasion
would be: venom, speed, webbed feet, strong claws, and strong jaws. Venom would be very important
for my protection because I would rather kill the aliens, instead of avoiding them. In order to inject
venom into the aliens, humans would need to have sharper teeth. I would sneak up on an alien and bite
them. This could immobilize the alien once the venom affects them. Two animals that utilize venom
are spiders and snakes. Speed would be another important protection method because if a group of
aliens were chasing you, they would not be able to keep up with your incredible speed. If you were
traveling in a large group, you could all go separate directions and confuse the aliens. They would not
be able to keep track of everyone or even be able to catch up to any human. This would also include
the speed of climbing things, such as trees and mountains. Two animals that utilize this method of
protection are the cobra and the rattlesnake. Webbed feet would also be an important protection
method for humans if they were being hunted by aliens. Webbed feet are helpful for swimming and
would allow humans to swim quickly away from the predators. Webbed feet would make our feet look
a lot different than they do now. We would walk differently with webbed feet, but would swim very

Margaret Garner Significance
Who is Margaret Garner? Why is she significant? One may know this answer by reading literature.
Literature often seems tedious and a chore to read. Students often dread reading mandatory literature
for school, however, literature offers many benefits. I believe we should read literature to educate us in
history and to give us insight into human suffering in various cultures. Beloved, by Toni Morrison is a
novel about a freed slave who recounts her horrific memories of enslavement. Morrison based her
novel on the life of Margaret Garner. Morrison s graphic details depict the true nature of slavery,
educating the reader in how morally wrong slavery was.
While editing a book for Random House in the 1970 s, Toni Morrison learned about the story ... Show

This culture was primarily white, male dominated. If you did not fit into such category, you were
oppressed. Slavery, in all aspects, is wrong. Just the idea of one human owning another human is
sickening. I do not think I would be able to have such a strong opinion without reading literature.
Literature, specifically Beloved, has taught me how abusive slave labor is on the body, and how
psychologically straining it is being constantly dehumanized. In the last paragraph of Beloved,
Morrison writes, It was not a story to pass on. So they forgot her. Like an unpleasant dream during a
troubling sleep...This is not a story to pass on (Morrison 324). Morrison is making note that this story
of a mother s plan to save her children by murdering them would not have been passed down in
society. The people in these stories, like Margaret Garner, are forgotten in society. Morrison gives
these disremembered people a voice. The horrific events and all the other mentions of abuse are not
talked about or written about because it makes America and its slave owning history look bad, but this
is the truth. We should read literature to educate us on the past, to sympathize with those suffering in
modern day slavery, and to take action that such events never repeat

The Tragedy Of The Iranian Hostage Crisis
There was once time of prosperity and hope in this great nation. A time where it seemed that nothing
could go wrong and a time that America seemed to be on top of the world as a powerhouse; however,
by the late 1970 s, that time was no more. America went from an economic powerhouse to a country
struggling to survive. America went from the land of the free and the home of the brave to citizens
having no identity of patriotism following the Vietnam War. America went from doing the attacking
and righting the wrong in the world, to being harassed and taken advantage of. This harassment is told
through David Farber s novel, Taken Hostage, which details the hostage takeover that involved sixty
six American citizens who had to endure 444 agonizing days of being taken hostage because America
was no longer in control. During the time of the Iranian hostage crisis, Americans were held back by
the tragedy for numerous reasons, many of which stem from the immediate reaction of combined
shock and frustration towards the United States Government and President Carter, a lack of
knowledge of the ongoing strained relationship between the two countries, and finally, the surprising
tension and ineffectiveness of the Carter Administration s foreign policy.
In the months leading up to the hostage crisis, the morale and patriotism expressed by the American
people was gloom and not promising for the nation; Especially in the last years of the decade, it was
mainly just hard times (Farber, 10).

Safe Injection Sites Research Paper
Two experts are debating on a widespread question that is becoming more severe than ever. Drug
abuse and addiction is an issue spreading throughout the entire country with multiple pros and cons

distinct, appropriate points to negate the validity of safe injection sites are not a valid response to the
opioid epidemic. One point expressed in the pro/con portion is, [i]f a Ford Motor truck causes
expectable deaths because the truck is dangerous, Ford pays, not taxpayers. (Johnson). This should not
differ because the choices are being made consciously. The amount of deaths caused by drug abuse is
skyrocketing. Taxpayers should not be forced to help with this situation, much like the taxpayers
would not have to pay for a vehicle accident that they did not cause. The company/provider should be

Brian Johnson expressed his opinion of the issue at hand, [l]et s see the proposal for safe injection

(Johnson). This idea speaks more loudly than any other presented in the discussion. Safe injection
sites are not the right way to go about helping addiction. There are many flaws in this decision that
can affect the outcome of a patient. Agreeing to continue to provide the drugs to which they are
already addicted is nothing short of naive. This is just allowing the dealers to continue making money
on something that is illegal; it should be prohibited, not advertised.
Drug abuse and addiction is something that is still overlooked throughout the United States. This issue
is real and life threatening; it should be treated as so. Safe injection sites are not valid responses to the

The Soviets Fault For Causing The Cold War Essay
There are several who have a different approach of whether it s the U.S or the Soviets fault for causing
the Cold War. In reality, they have always had clashing ideologies and different structures of
government that have played a major role in leading them to embark upon such a distrustful
relationship. Furthermore, the Soviets distrusted the U.S way before WWII when they intervened in
the Russian Civil War and didn t recognize the Soviet Union until 1933. As a result, during and after
WWII, the Soviets were determined to dominate European countries with their own political agenda to
become the hegemonic power and believed the U.S. had the same motive. However, the U.S was more
eager on protecting these Eastern countries from communist influence and sustaining stability
throughout these regions. Despite the U.S s effort to come to a mutual agreement with the Soviets
after the war at the Yalta Conference, tension has gradually progressed throughout the years that led to
an even further separation between the two leading powers (Doc H). In addition to, the Soviets
disregarded the compromises made at the Yalta Conference to have free and fair elections in Europe,
instead creating a buffer in Eastern Europe, settling Soviet satellites. By committing such actions, the
U.S automatically became suspicious and concluded that the Soviets were ultimately compelled to
spread communism. The U.S further distrusted the Soviets when they secretly signed the

Descartes Res Cogitans, Res Extensa, God
Recalling the distinction made earlier between primary objects of perception (objects of mathematics)
and secondary objects of perception (apparent objects formed from observer dependent sensory
properties), Descartes investigates whether material objects exist by asking two questions: (1) do
primary objects exist? and (2) do secondary objects exist? In answering the first question, Descartes
draws on a distinction between imagining primary objects and conceiving of primary objects. He notes
that he conceives of primary objects (such as triangles) clearly and distinctly, but this in no way means
that such objects actually exist. It only means that they might exist since the idea contains no
contradiction. (See the discussion of possible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Descartes argues that a distinct idea of my own mind does not include the ideas of imagination,
sensation, purposeful movement of body, appetites or most emotions (Principles, part one, §48, I, 208
9). That is, had I none of these things, I would continue to be the same self, although in a much
impoverished manner, and could still think (and that alone is my essence) in other ways. All of the
above involve some relation to the body.
But the reverse is not true: it is impossible to think of imagination or sensation or purposeful
movement without a mind. That is to say, the former are of the body, but not merely of the body.
Descartes writes, In imagining, it [the mind] turns towards the body (Meditations 6, II, 51). These
things are distinct from mind as possible modes are from a thing (e.g. as a cuboid shape is from a
body). On the other hand, mind cannot be thought without it thinking, at least in the sense of pure
thought therefore thinking in the non bodily sense of pure intellection (see Principles, part one, §32, I,
204) is an essential mode. This distinction between merely possible and essential modes provides an
argument for the separability of pure mind from things of the body. But, again, separability does not
mean separate the immediate and almost overwhelming fact of our existence is the factual
togetherness of mind and body.
Nevertheless, that which in the body produces

Summary Of A Different Drum By Simon Tong
Simon Tong s short story, The Beat of a Different Drum explores the journey of a young boy
immigrating from Hong Kong to Australia with a lack of knowledge of the Australian culture and
tradition. Through the ambiguous understanding of his unwelcoming classmates, he is victimized to
the extent that he feels both violated and humiliated, emphasised by the fact that he is unable to
express his feelings in English. These feelings result in him becoming increasingly insecure and
irritated as he has become confused and alienated. The rich vocabulary and literary techniques enabled
Simon s short story to become more relatable to the audience by exploring the common adolescent
crisis of Being Different .
During Simon s first playground experience, he was bombarded with the unexpected questions of
students who seemed to want to befriend him. Beginning with innocent questions, Are you from

Arranged Marriages In America
Throughout society, marriage is seen as a special symbol of two people becoming one.
In the eastern side of the world, arranged marriages are very common. It is not like the western world
where couples date to know each other then choose whether they are the perfect match. Arranged
marriages are often chosen by the elders in the family. This practice has been handed down for
centuries. Throughout the marriage process, there are certain procedures that must be followed in
eastern matchmaking. Once a match has been chosen, the couple will learn over time that commitment
and acceptance comes prior to emotions and happiness. Even though our western ways may seem
normal to us, the traditions of eastern marriages are custom through procedure, commitment and
acceptance within their society.
While every traditional marriage may be different, the eastern custom has chosen to abide by long
established procedures. These procedures consist of family members who decide on what is best for
their offspring. The decisions which are considered range from family values, education, wealth, and
physical appearance. This practice has worked well for the union of marriage for the two chosen
individuals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Sin Of Intellect Vs. The Sin Of Passion
The Sin of Intellect vs. The Sin of Passion Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote, The Scarlet Letter, an
American novel that follows the events of a young woman, Hester Prynne, who is living in 1640 s

Roger Chillingworth, strives to discover the identity of the father who is the beloved minister, Arthur

intellect which affects the people surrounding him. Hester is constantly emotionally distressed from
Chillingworth s sin, but is rewarded from her sin of passion. The physical and mental state of
Dimmsdale is ruined by the sin of intelligence, but also partially by the sin of passion. Not
intentionally, Chillingworth s sin of intellect affects him the most by changing him morally,
physically, and mentally. The effects that the sin of intellect causes are far worse in contrast to the sin
of passion. Major changes in Hester s emotional state, Dimmesdale s severe health reduction, and
Chillingworth s drastic shift in character are reasons why the sin of intellect overpowers sin of passion
in the severity of the sin. To begin, Chillingworth s sin of passion is constantly emotionally stressing

The whiskey on his breath is not necessarily negative due to the factors of the working class culture in
1948 when this poem was published. To add on to this view that he is a hard worker with knuckles
that are battered and a palm caked hard by dirt, the man is a grafter who works long and hard for the
family he loves. The overwhelming joy he feels when he sees his son makes him want to dance in a
waltz. Due to him and his father s height difference, the son s ear scraped on the father s belt buckle.
The longer they dance the happier he get. This causes him to become more and more clumsier due to
his drunken state, and it starts to become too much for the son the handle and begins to become very
rough. This dance becomes so rough that the dancing causes the pans to fall to the floor and causes the
son to, hang on like death to his father. The beating on his son s head is part of joy at the music he
hears in his head. The mother remains an outsider to what is actually happening in front of her and is
naturally unhappy due to the random disturbance the father makes. After the dance is over the son

The Doctrine Of Primal Sin Essay
Augustine on the doctrine of primal sin focuses on the downfall of Lucifer, and whether or not he
foreknew there would be consequences in turning away from God. However, it is arguable that Lucifer
did foresee his coming downfall. Because his intentional actions in turning away from God goes
against his angelic nature, which means he had to deliberately had to deprive himself of the greatest of
goods, and actively pursue misery. For Lucifer perversely chooses to abandon all that is good by
turning away from God, and towards what is contrary of Him, which is nothingness. That in which, on
behalf of Augustine, I will argue that Lucifer did foresee the coming of his downfall. For Lucifer
chose to bolster the vices of his will, which became the very means of degenerating his angelic nature.
Consequently, this means Lucifer intentionally pursued what is contrary to the God, thus leading to his
fall.
In behalf of Augustine, it is arguable that Lucifer foreknew his actions in rebelling against God was
going to bring about a particular consequence. For it is significant to understand the development of
the vices which enables Lucifer to fall. For Augustine explains in book 12, chapter 1; all Angels
recognize a common good in their nature which is to cleave to God. However, in order for Lucifer to
turn away from the divine graces of God, he must then deny his angelic nature. For the act of rejecting
his angelic nature, originates from the particular good bestowed by God. Because it

In 1945, the immigration policy changed and Immigration expanded (Quebec History). Thousands of
Europeans came to Canada hoping they could build a better life, however, Prime Minister King did
not allow all immigrants. May of 1947, he declared an immigration policy to control population
growth. He allowed immigrants who easily understood and strictly skope English or French (Filice).
Due to the economic growth, Canada was in need for people who could work in labor and expanding
industries. During this time, they experienced a large human migration from the Netherlands. In
1947,about 15000 Dutch farmers came to Canada (Filice). Canada and the Netherlands had an
agreement known as the Netherlands Farm Families Movement, which allowed to immigrants to work
on canadian farms until purchasing their own land (Filice). 2000 war brides were also a part of the
immigrants and many caused caused Canada s baby boom (Filice). This increased Canada s birth rate

Changing American Culture
I remember looking at the pictures of me when I was just a little baby in South Korea. One of my
favorite picture was the one with a beer box on top of my head with a bag of Doritos by myside. I
started out my life with the culture of a Korean, but being adopted from my white parents and living in
American has changed my culture dramatically. Since the age of one, I have experienced and lived the
American culture. I adapted to the things that would seem different from the Korean culture. Growing
up I never took a notice to the fact I had white parents or that they didn t look the same as me. I Just
saw them as my mother and father. Throughout school I was quiet about the fact I had white parents,
because I didn t see that as something different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It doesn t matter if you are younger or older, different gender, class, etc. There is always common
ground when communicating with others. In my personal experiences, I have found it difficult at times
to figure out and understand the way their culture can directly affect my culture. Going back to when I
was in high school, I had a lot of friends that had different cultural backgrounds. I felt privileged
growing up in a nice neighborhood compared to some of my friends that didn t have that opportunity.
Growing up my parents always wanted me to get good grades so that I could get into a good school
and be successful. One of the biggest privileges I have noticed was that I haven t had to pay for
college. My parents saved since I was a child to have enough money for me to go to college. When
talking to my friends from different cultures they see that as a privilege that they do not have.
Personally, I don t feel any responsibility toward those who lack that privilege, but sometimes I try to
figure out if I can help in

Design for Manufacturability
Design For Manufacturability Abstract This paper explores design for manufacturability using several
scholarly journal articles and books from different sources and industries. It starts by examining the
definition of design for manufacturability as it pertains to managers of supply chains. The paper then
discusses a fundamental topic that provides a foundation for learning design for manufacturability: the
principles of design. The next section of this paper outlines the benefits that design for
manufacturability has if a company chooses to implement it into their operations. Following the
benefits of design for manufacturability are several key guidelines that will give a company the best
chance for success while using design for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The solution of one problem most likely will not result in total success for the entire project, as it is a
part of a system. The fifth principle is the limited information principle. The traditional problem
solving approach is to bring in a consultant who is an expert in supposedly similar problems or to
become an expert in the problem yourself by delving into past problems that seem familiar. (McClure,
1999) Information should be limited so that, like traditional problem solving, it is not time consuming
and cluttered with useless information. The people to people principle is the sixth principle suggested
by Nadler. Anyone that has to do with any area of the problem needs to feel that they are included in
implementing a solution. The final principle discussed is the betermant timeline principle. The
familiar phrase If it ain t broke, don t fix it can only be used for the short term. Over time, everything
wears out eventually due to change in external and internal factors. Solutions to problems should be
monitored to help track change and evaluate improvement. (McClure, 1999) Requirements Before
Pursuing Design for Manufacturability After learning about these principles to design, one can now
start to understand design for manufacturability and its effects on the design and manufacturing
process. While keeping in mind that design for manufacturability creates the reduction of

Religious Persecution Essay
We need to get rid of the iron age idea that people have a constitutional guarantee protecting their
religion. This irrational nonsense ignores the fact that religion can, and often does, lead to the deaths
of many innocents. Not surprising, nonbelievers always tend to get the worst of any kind of so called
religious persecution . Sort of makes you wonder why its even called religious persecution and not
atheist persecution.
Before this nonsense found its way to the first amendment of the constitution. It was Lord Baltimore
of the Catholic church, who came up with the idea of a guaranteed right to worship, therefore
protecting the Catholic church in Maryland. Why? Not because there were atheists disrespecting or
killing the religious, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Seeing how religion certainly has proven to be the best at hate and divisive hate speech, it religion
certainly deserves to be on the top of the hate list. This is demonstrated by history and proven in every
day news. Ever hear of an atheist suicide bomber with total disregard for the lives of woman and
children?
We need to eliminate the guaranteed constitutional right to believe in dangerous ideas found
specifically in religion. By doing so, we would be able to criticize religion when it steps out of line, in
the SAME exact way that every other idea on earth is open to criticism. This would be a good step to
stopping the spread of nonsense.
Think how well it would have worked out if every news paper in the world printed the Danish artists
critical rendering of the prophet Muhammad, instead of cowering in fear and capitulating. Because we
cowered and allowed them to silence us, we empowered Islamic terrorists and what ever other
religious group to cry foul when offended. They now know, not only are we are afraid to offend or
criticize them, but that we will give in and guarantee their terror and intimidation in our country and

Terrestrial Ecology Lab
Terrestrial Ecology
Introduction
We know that light is an important part of both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In a forest system
both the canopy and the understory absorb light. The type of forest and leaf cover present determines
the amount of light that reaches the understory. This can be measured using the LAI (Leaf Area
Index), which is the amount of leaves per unit ground area. Light quantity in forests is affected by
several factors such as tree species, age, and density.
Looking at the amount of light that can penetrate to the understory also shows how much moisture can
reach that level. The amount of light and moisture that reaches the forest floor determines how much
biomass will be present in this layer. The goal of

Invention of the Automobile Essay
Invention of the Automobile
In the beginning, man s only form of transportation was his own feet. Later, to comfort his journey on
foot, was the invention of footwear. Through envy of the speed of other animals he would learn to
tame these animals. People who live in the desert ride atop camels. The people who live in the frigid
climates travel by dogs. Some people from places like India ride elephants. But the must widely used
form of transportation by animal power was by horse. Man would soon develop boats and ships to
travel long distances over water and time would flow like the rivers and hundreds of years later, in the
late 1700s steam power became the new craze. Steam power got the wheels turning amongst many
inventors who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Interesting to note is that the only invention he made was a two cycle internal combustion engine. The
automobile today has items that are critical to have. If a major car company were to produce a car
powered only by Lenoir s engine it would never sell because of the essentials.
THE ESSENTIALS The essentials are the necessary parts for an automobile to be an automobile in
today s world. If someone were to build an automobile like that of Lenoir s today it would be nothing
more than a go kart. No one would call it an automobile. Automobiles need certain things other than
just an engine and a horse carriage to be considered an automobile today for two reasons. One reason
is so someone will actually buy it and another is because it s the item is required by law. In 1861 a
German engineer named Nikolaus August Otto built his first gasoline powered engine. Three years
later he would team up with Eugen Langen to form the Deutz Gas Engine Factory. Otto s engine was
based on the same principles of Lenoir s. It was also a two stroke engine with one cylinder but it used
the different type of fuel, gasoline rather than coal gas. Otto and Langen learned of a way to gain more
efficiency by compressing the gas before combustion in 1867. This led them to production of the first
four stroke

Essay on The Daoism and the Confucianism in Han Dynasty
The Daoism and the Confucianism in Han Dynasty
Yang Yu
History 135: Imperial Chinese History
Professor: Robert J. Culp
Paper I
March 4th, 2011
The Daoism and the Confucianism in Han Dynasty As the dominant philosophical school for around
two thousand years in Chinese imperial history, Confucianism is always regarded as the most
representative ideology of China, associated with numerous books, poems, artworks and stories that
glorify Confucianism s permeation into every corner of Chinese society. However, before Han Wudi,
Confucianism was only one of those competing philosophical schools founded in Spring and Autumn
period. During the Warring States period and Qin dynasty, Legalism took place of all other
philosophical schools ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it is always easy to start the process of centralization but difficult to maintain the state of
centralization. Faced with this knotty problem, Wudi adopted Confucianism, which underlined the
moral basis of superior subordinate relations, appreciating that in the long run the ruler would achieve
his goals more easily and economically when his subordinates viewed their relationship with the ruler
in moral terms of loyalty and responsibility (65). In fact, Han s Confucianism is not the same as the
Confucianism during the period of the Spring and Autumn or Warring States. It is a special status of
Confucianism. As Ebrey writes in his book, Han Confucianism itself was eclectic, fortifying itself
with precepts and philosophical concerns drawn from what had been competing philosophical schools
in the pre Qin period (77). Different from the traditional Confucianism, Han s Confucianism
assimilated thoughts from Legalism, Daoism and other schools, such as Moism s thought of universal
love (兼爱) and yin and yang school s thought of five phases (阴阳五行论). Han Confucians sought
ways to comprehend the world around them as a self generating and self sustaining organism
governed by cyclical yet never replicating flows of yin and yang and the five phases (fire, water, earth,
metal, and wood) (78). Han Confucians thought that if one of these phases was disturbed, the whole
system would

Similarities Between Hamlet And A Fine Balance
Finding Your Purpose
The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear
for newer and richer experience (Eleanor Roosevelt). Experience in our lives help shape us into people
we are today. In the novels, Hamlet by William Shakespeare and A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
the characters are presented with difficulties due to the effects of the emergency. The aftermath of
being in a state of emergency results in the countries of Denmark and India experiencing corrupt
government, death and violence, forcing the characters to find the purpose for their lives.
After living in a state of emergency, Hamlet and Dina use the effects of corrupt government to realize
their purpose in life. In Hamlet, King Hamlet is killed by Claudius so that he can become the king of
Denmark, and young Hamlet is left reeling with grief. Hamlet uses his grief to avenge his father and
expose Claudius for corrupting the government of Denmark. Hamlet promises his father,
Haste me to know t, that I, with wings as swift /As meditation or the thoughts of love, / May sweep to
my revenge (Shakespeare, 1.5. 29 31).
Instead of being held back by his grief, Hamlet turns his anger into something positive by revealing
Claudius true character to Denmark. Hamlet s reaction to the murder of his father helps him to find his
purpose in life, by freeing Denmark from the corrupt government. Similar to Hamlet, in A Fine
Balance, the characters and other

Summary of research plan Development of drugs with high potency and inhibitory activity against specific activating mutation, while showing significantly less activity against wild type mutations, made testing specific sensitizing mutation necessary. (1) (EGFR) T790M mutation a successful example of a biomarker for non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment with Osimertinib that gained a wide acceptance in clinical practice in Europe and US (), One question that needs to be asked, however, is whether testing for similar mutations in different cancer will be of clinical value. an unknown subpopulation of patients with CRC will have an activating EGFR mutation, such as L858R, which is thought to activate the receptor constitutively, regardless of ligand status promoting cellular proliferation and growth. in patients with colorectal cancer, Targeting activated EGFR, hypothetically, will lead to growth inhibition of cancer cell dependent on the oncogenic drive of sensitising EGFR mutation. • 3. Biography on Charles Dickens This greatest of Victorian writers was born in Landport, Portsmouth, on February 7, 1812. His father John worked as a clerk in the Navy Payroll Office in Portsmouth. The elder Dickens was transfered several times, first to London, then to Chatham, and finally, in 1822, back to London, where the family lived in Camden Town. John Dickens was constantly in debt, and in 1824 he was imprisoned in Marshalsea debtor s prison (Southwark). Charles was forced to leave school at the age of 12 and go to work in a bootblack factory to help support the Dickens family. It was his personal experience of factory work and the living conditions of the poor that created in Dickens the compassion which was to mark his literary works such as Oliver Twist. Dickens was released from the purgatory of Warren s Blacking Factory when his father received a legacy from a relative, and could finally pay his debts and be set free from Marshalsea. Charles went to Wellington House Academy for two years, then took work at Gray s Inn as a clerk. Dickens worked as a Parliamentary reporter before finally moving on to The Morning Chronicle in 1834. His first published work appeared in Monthly Magazine in December 1833, and he followed it with nine more, penning his name as Boz to the last two articles. The pseudonym Boz was drawn from a pet name for his younger brother when they were children. In 1836 his articles were compiled and published as Sketches by Boz . • 7. The Spanish Ballad, Or Romancero The spanish ballad, or romancero, is a form of poetry which, closely linked to the medieval epic, is passed down by word of mouth and open to interpretation by the performers and audience. The ballad Romance de Moraima (or yo me era mora Moraima) is a romancero fronterizo which is relatively brief, and follows the standard octosyllabic structure. The ballad contains the key feature of assonating units, yet does not strictly rhyme with one vowel, i.e. a but varies between a , o , and a paragogic e . Moraima opens quite abruptly and dramatically, as is the fashion of the romancero. No time is spared in small details; instead the sensational tale begins immediately. Interestingly, the description is in the past era even though one would imagine that she is still the same person, which gives the impression that something drastic has changed. The first line lands with a punch. The bold statement of her name «yo me era mora Moraima« identifies the protagonist and throws the listener in. The yo is emphatic, as is the last positioning of Moraima, and together they frame the line to deliver impact. There is strong alliteration and repetition of the mo sound with Moraima, mora and morilla, all of which contribute to a compelling description, and draw attention to her islamic beliefs. The choice of the name Moraima, when juxtaposed with mora, emphasises her religious affiliation which would have been controversial at that time due to the Reconquista. This play on ... Essay on Opposites Attract in Antony and Cleopatra Opposites Attract in Antony and Cleopatra William Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra is a play that is centred around a pair of historical lovers from two distinct cultures, Mark Antony from Rome and Queen Cleopatra from Egypt. The Roman and Egyptian cultures have vastly different norms and social ideas that are almost complete polar opposites in nature. These conflicting views are instrumental in the way that Cleopatra and Antony act. These two characters are so great in their respective societies that they serve as models to look to, although Antony may not be everybody s perfect vision of what a Roman should be. In addition to this way of designating the two title characters, Anne Barton has compiled a list of expressions used to describe Cleopatra and Antony. She first discusses references to Antony: In the course of the tragedy, Antony is called the noble Antony, the courteous Antony, the firm Roman, Mars, a mine of bounty, the triple pillar of the world, the demi atlas of this earth, the lord of lords, of infinite virtue, the crown o the earth, and the garland of the war. These are only a few of the celebratory epithets. He is also poor Antony, a libertine, the abstract of all faults that all men follow, a gorgon, a sworder, an old ruffian, a doting mallard, the ne er lust wearied Antony, and a strumpet s fool. (47) All of the honorific titles given to Antony suggest to the audience that he is indeed more than a mortal man. Even in the titles given to Antony that are less than respectful, he is still seen as something other than an average human being. Being called a gorgon , for example, would not make Antony seem like a hero, but he would still be seen as something more than human. Many times a description of Antony will include the word the , implying that he alone is this great, and has no counterpart. Comparison and Contrast Research Paper The poems I wander as a lonely cloud and To an athlete dying young are equally different, and similar in many ways. How are these poems different let alone similar? you may ask. Well in this essay I will compare and contrast the poems that will give you insight on how the characteristics of these two poems differentiate and, are comparable. For example tone, symbolism, and structure each play a big part in both poems. However in essay you will also know the role of these three characteristics, and how each one can makes the poems whole. I wander as a lonely cloud by William Wordsworth represents that loneliness can bring the bliss of solitude. In the poem Wordsworth start it off with the speaker wandering in valleys and high hills. The speaker compares himself as a cloud because a cloud represents loneliness and bemusement, and that represents the speaker s feelings. The speaker continues to wander until he sees daffodils by a lake dancing. As the speaker watches the daffodils he explains their dancing as carefree, gleeful and happy. I saw a crowd a host of daffodils; Beside a lake, beneath the trees, fluttering in the breeze. (Lines 4 6). The speaker gives the daffodils personality to show the daffodils have humanlike qualities which gives the flowers life. Along the margin of bay: Ten Thousand I saw at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. (Lines 10 12). After watching the dancing daffodils, the speaker then realizes that the flowers give him a gift, and that is the bliss of solitude. This gift of solitude helps the speaker out of his lonesome state and, whenever he feels lonely he remembers the bliss of solitude. And then my heart fills with pleasure, And the daffodils dance. (Lines 21 24). The speaker thinks of the daffodils, because of the solitude in his heart which this solitude gives him joy and peace. The speaker comes to realize that loneliness doesn t last forever, and with solitude he will find serenity and comfort. To an Athlete Dying Young the speaker talks about a young athlete that died at a young age. • 13. Mussolini Fascism Analysis The popularity of Mussolini s fascism among returning veterans was not only because of the comradery that Mussolini shared with them, but also the role that veterans played in fascismo. Welk (1938, 8 9), notes a publication in which, Mussolini campaigned for the right of returned soldiers to lead Italy towards becoming a great nation and a new world power. In order to understand how powerful this image was, it is important to understand the Post war Italian economy. Though Italy had claimed victory in 1918, it came at the cost of the lives of approximately 600 thousand Italian soldiers, and nearly everyone in Italy outside of war profiteers exited the war more impoverished. Particularly, the transition from war to peace time production was a slow and painful process. Thus, while Italy claimed military victory, the post war economy was not only crippled but also disorganized. This left laborers eager to lend their ears to a solution, and two powerful but contrasting ideologies to vie for their support. The first to consider is Communism. A year before, communism had claimed an important victory in the Russian revolution of 1917. The decisive victory of the Russian proletariat in Welk s (1938, 9 11) opinion provoked Italian communists to encourage the same in Italy. The following years were characterized by strikes, and worker s seizing the means of production, as the working class attempted to seize power throughout the nation. One notable example occurred on April 10, 1919, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A comparison of dystopian texts explores contemporary issues of society and integrates them into an alien world. The Handmaid s Tale by Margaret Atwood illustrates the nature of society as far from ideal, and the destructive nature of oppression. Similarly, Gattaca by Andrew Niccol epitomises the characteristics of a dystopian text, by highlighting the subversion of natural processes, suppression of identity and oppression present in society. Both texts explore similar themes that reflect a society s deepest fears to the audience dehumanisation. Oppression is a major fret in the contemporary world. Alluding to Ronald Raegan s policy of supporting the oppressive apartheid in South Africa, Atwood in The Handmaid s Tale, conveys a society where oppression is accepted through forced collaboration and a fear of consequences if not followed. Offred s internalised oppression is evident when she describes that the Handmaids are treated as two legged wombs, that s all: sacred vessels, ambulatory chalices . This is a metaphor manifesting how the Handmaids come to accept that their purpose is to produce children and showing Offred s personal oppression and her willingness to comply with the regime. The five methods I think would benefit humans the most in an alien invasion would be: venom, speed, webbed feet, strong claws, and strong jaws. Venom would be very important for my protection because I would rather kill the aliens, instead of avoiding them. In order to inject venom into the aliens, humans would need to have sharper teeth. I would sneak up on an alien and bite them. This could immobilize the alien once the venom affects them. Two animals that utilize venom are spiders and snakes. Speed would be another important protection method because if a group of aliens were chasing you, they would not be able to keep up with your incredible speed. If you were traveling in a large group, you could all go separate directions and confuse the aliens. They would not be able to keep track of everyone or even be able to catch up to any human. This would also include the speed of climbing things, such as trees and mountains. Two animals that utilize this method of protection are the cobra and the rattlesnake. Webbed feet would also be an important protection method for humans if they were being hunted by aliens. • 26. Margaret Garner Significance Who is Margaret Garner? Why is she significant? One may know this answer by reading literature. Literature often seems tedious and a chore to read. Students often dread reading mandatory literature for school, however, literature offers many benefits. I believe we should read literature to educate us in history and to give us insight into human suffering in various cultures. Beloved, by Toni Morrison is a novel about a freed slave who recounts her horrific memories of enslavement. Morrison based her novel on the life of Margaret Garner. Morrison s graphic details depict the true nature of slavery, educating the reader in how morally wrong slavery was. If you did not fit into such category, you were oppressed. Slavery, in all aspects, is wrong. Just the idea of one human owning another human is sickening. I do not think I would be able to have such a strong opinion without reading literature. Literature, specifically Beloved, has taught me how abusive slave labor is on the body, and how psychologically straining it is being constantly dehumanized. In the last paragraph of Beloved, Morrison writes, It was not a story to pass on. So they forgot her. Like an unpleasant dream during a troubling sleep...This is not a story to pass on (Morrison 324). Morrison is making note that this story of a mother s plan to save her children by murdering them would not have been passed down in society. The people in these stories, like Margaret Garner, are forgotten in society. Morrison gives these disremembered people a voice. The horrific events and all the other mentions of abuse are not talked about or written about because it makes America and its slave owning history look bad, but this is the truth. • 28. The Tragedy Of The Iranian Hostage Crisis There was once time of prosperity and hope in this great nation. A time where it seemed that nothing could go wrong and a time that America seemed to be on top of the world as a powerhouse; however, by the late 1970 s, that time was no more. America went from an economic powerhouse to a country struggling to survive. America went from the land of the free and the home of the brave to citizens having no identity of patriotism following the Vietnam War. America went from doing the attacking and righting the wrong in the world, to being harassed and taken advantage of. This harassment is told through David Farber s novel, Taken Hostage, which details the hostage takeover that involved sixty six American citizens who had to endure 444 agonizing days of being taken hostage because America was no longer in control. During the time of the Iranian hostage crisis, Americans were held back by the tragedy for numerous reasons, many of which stem from the immediate reaction of combined shock and frustration towards the United States Government and President Carter, a lack of knowledge of the ongoing strained relationship between the two countries, and finally, the surprising tension and ineffectiveness of the Carter Administration s foreign policy. In the months leading up to the hostage crisis, the morale and patriotism expressed by the American people was gloom and not promising for the nation; Especially in the last years of the decade, it was mainly just hard times (Farber, 10). ... One point expressed in the pro/con portion is, [i]f a Ford Motor truck causes expectable deaths because the truck is dangerous, Ford pays, not taxpayers. (Johnson). This should not differ because the choices are being made consciously. The amount of deaths caused by drug abuse is skyrocketing. There are many flaws in this decision that can affect the outcome of a patient. Agreeing to continue to provide the drugs to which they are already addicted is nothing short of naive. In reality, they have always had clashing ideologies and different structures of government that have played a major role in leading them to embark upon such a distrustful relationship. Furthermore, the Soviets distrusted the U.S way before WWII when they intervened in the Russian Civil War and didn t recognize the Soviet Union until 1933. As a result, during and after WWII, the Soviets were determined to dominate European countries with their own political agenda to become the hegemonic power and believed the U.S. had the same motive. However, the U.S was more eager on protecting these Eastern countries from communist influence and sustaining stability throughout these regions. Despite the U.S s effort to come to a mutual agreement with the Soviets after the war at the Yalta Conference, tension has gradually progressed throughout the years that led to an even further separation between the two leading powers (Doc H). In addition to, the Soviets disregarded the compromises made at the Yalta Conference to have free and fair elections in Europe, instead creating a buffer in Eastern Europe, settling Soviet satellites. By committing such actions, the U.S automatically became suspicious and concluded that the Soviets were ultimately compelled to spread communism. In answering the first question, Descartes draws on a distinction between imagining primary objects and conceiving of primary objects. He notes that he conceives of primary objects (such as triangles) clearly and distinctly, but this in no way means that such objects actually exist. It only means that they might exist since the idea contains no contradiction. (See the discussion of possible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Descartes argues that a distinct idea of my own mind does not include the ideas of imagination, sensation, purposeful movement of body, appetites or most emotions (Principles, part one, §48, I, 208 9). That is, had I none of these things, I would continue to be the same self, although in a much impoverished manner, and could still think (and that alone is my essence) in other ways. All of the above involve some relation to the body. But the reverse is not true: it is impossible to think of imagination or sensation or purposeful movement without a mind. That is to say, the former are of the body, but not merely of the body. Descartes writes, In imagining, it [the mind] turns towards the body (Meditations 6, II, 51). These things are distinct from mind as possible modes are from a thing (e.g. as a cuboid shape is from a body). On the other hand, mind cannot be thought without it thinking, at least in the sense of pure thought therefore thinking in the non bodily sense of pure intellection (see Principles, part one, §32, I, 204) is an essential mode. This distinction between merely possible and essential modes provides an argument for the separability of pure mind from things of the body. But, again, separability does not mean separate the immediate and almost overwhelming fact of our existence is the factual togetherness of mind and body. This practice has been handed down for centuries. Throughout the marriage process, there are certain procedures that must be followed in eastern matchmaking. The Doctrine Of Primal Sin Essay Augustine on the doctrine of primal sin focuses on the downfall of Lucifer, and whether or not he foreknew there would be consequences in turning away from God. However, it is arguable that Lucifer did foresee his coming downfall. Because his intentional actions in turning away from God goes against his angelic nature, which means he had to deliberately had to deprive himself of the greatest of goods, and actively pursue misery. For Lucifer perversely chooses to abandon all that is good by turning away from God, and towards what is contrary of Him, which is nothingness. That in which, on behalf of Augustine, I will argue that Lucifer did foresee the coming of his downfall. For Lucifer chose to bolster the vices of his will, which became the very means of degenerating his angelic nature. Consequently, this means Lucifer intentionally pursued what is contrary to the God, thus leading to his fall. In behalf of Augustine, it is arguable that Lucifer foreknew his actions in rebelling against God was going to bring about a particular consequence. For it is significant to understand the development of the vices which enables Lucifer to fall. For Augustine explains in book 12, chapter 1; all Angels recognize a common good in their nature which is to cleave to God.
