How Does Chaucer Use Satire In The Canterbury Tales
The Canterbury Tales
In the medieval age there are norms that people in a society are supposed to abide by. In this time,
there was a lot of wars dividing the nations and changed how people lived. The black plague also
devastated the nation in many ways. During this time, if you weren t a noble or part of the church,
then you didn t really have any power or voice in your society. Chaucer uses elements of the other or
otherness to satire religion, social structure, and patriarchal institutions to show how corrupt these
groups are in hope to change people s mind about these groups and institutions.
During the medieval ages the church was supposed to be a person s main priority. Chaucer uses satire
to show the corruption of the church through the character, the Friar . The Friar gets otherred for
scapegoating. The Friar was supposed to take donations from the church and give it to the poor.
Chaucer s Friar takes takes those donations from the church but doesn t give them to the poor, but in
fact he takes it for himself. The Friar was also there to help people with their marriages giving the
ladies what he could afford her (GP 217). The Friar had a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chaucer uses satire to point out the problems within the noble class through the character the Knight.
The Knight gets alienated by the society because of his actions. The Knight, who is sought to be
honorable and noble, is quite the opposite in this situation. The Knight is accused of rape and is sent a
summons (GP76) from the queen to decide his fate. Chaucer decides to have his character, the Knight,
act like this to demonstrate that not all noble people are good people. The Knight is otherred by his
society and queen unless he can tell the queen the thing that women most desire (GP81) within a year.
If the Knight can do that, the queen will not kill him. That s not the only way that the Knight is
otherred in the canterbury

Sociological Concepts Of Family, Gender, And Identity Essay
This essay discusses the way in which I understand the sociological concepts of family, gender and
race nuclear family, doing gender, and identity, in particular. Arguably, these three concepts can relate
to each individuals life, through different personal experiences. To demonstrate my argument, I
highlight relevant situations in my own life that further explain my chosen sociological concepts.
The first concept I chose to focus on is family. In particular, the idea of the nuclear family .
A nuclear family is defined as: A couple and their dependent children, regarded as a basic social unit.
My research of this concept will focus on the theories of two sociologists George Peter Murdock, and
Talcott Parsons. George Murdock s theory suggests that there are four essential functions of an ideal
family. 1. Stable satisfaction of the sex drive, 2. The biological reproduction of the next generation, 3.
Socialisation of the young, 4. Meeting its members economic needs (Thompson, 2014). According to
Murdock, these four components are what keep the structure of the basic family unit intact, and by
achieving these four functions create an ideal family model. An opposing theory is Talcott Parson s
functional fit theory. Parson suggests that as society evolves, alternative forms of family life become
more accepted. Society has progressed so much that single parents providing for their children is as
normal as a nuclear family, and there tends to be less need for extended

Small Town Personal Statement
Personal Statement Many people think that living in a small town can limit the perspective of one s
mind, leaving one to believe that hardly anything exists beyond the boards of one s town. Enumclaw is
a small town I love; everyone knows everyone, local grocery store you got to know the person that
works there, small mountains, old parks, greens fields filled with cows. Growing up in Enumclaw was
different there was not weekends spent at the mall, not too much going on in town, and not a lot of
movement, everything in Enumclaw is slow and calm. The weekends would be consisted of getting up
early to ride the tractor with your father and sit on his lap as if you were driving, quading, or hiking
Mt.Peak. This town is where I call home and I love my home because its where I feel safe, happy and
where grew a great connection to.
I remember my childhood like if I was five years old again; it was the best time of my life, getting

Case Study Of London Underground
The company London Underground has managed to survive through partnerships with other
stakeholders to improve the rail transport sector. It is not easy for partnerships and collaborations to
last for long without proper management and leadership in place. By choosing this company as the
case study, it provides answers on how to well sustain partnerships for the good of commuters.
Stakeholders have different expectations and cultures and incorporating them into a general agenda for
a particular company can be quite a challenge. Mechanisms used by the London Underground
company to cement these partnerships can be copied by other companies not only in the rail industry
but other sectors too. This is a plus that needs to be shared by the different industries too. Another
reason for choosing London Underground as a case study was to help understand their financial
system. This looks into sources of financing and how to effectively utilize the available finances for
the good of commuters and workers too. Such a big company must need quite an enormous financial
budget to sustain most of their services. A way as to how they utilize the money allocated to them for
both service provision and staff maintenance could be a great learning tool for other stakeholders. An
inventory system, a proper recording system, and audit plans are key in ensuring financial
management. The study would establish how the company integrates all these factors to achieve
transparent resource utilization and

Diversity And Equality And Diversity
Diversity tends to be established by people from different spheres of life including different
ethnicities, cultures, and social settings. It allows individuals to appreciate and understand the
interdependence of culture, the environment in which people are living, and humanity. Diversity also
helps individuals to build alliances and unity despite having a difference regarding their beliefs,
religion, and culture. It helps one to recognize and appreciate that people are born different regarding
their personality and values so that one can accommodate those differences and live together in peace
and harmony. There are some ways through which diversity can be promoted. Some of those ways
include; creating an environment that includes all persons regardless of their social status and
economic background. Secondly, diversity can be improved by ensuring there is equal access to jobs
and opportunity for all people without discrimination. Thirdly, diversity can be enhanced by making
amendments in the organization policies, procedures, and process. Fourthly, diversity can be
strengthened by ensuring people are included and treated with fairness and dignity. Fairness helps to
eliminate issues and differentials because it encourages all members of the society feel appreciated.

Social Life of Coffee

Social Life of Coffee in England Research Paper
Depression, stress, workloads are outcomes from the overloading of the society. Because of the hard
time limits of the schedule, office workers constantly get tired. People repeat the same procedures
every day: get out from the bed, get ready to go to the office, drive to the office, work the whole day,
drive home, and go to sleep. Society of the end of the 20th century was looking for a method to wake
up, stay awake whole day, and keep working. This is the time when humanity chose coffee as a
magical drink that can help solve all problems with tiredness, depressions, and stress. The effects of
coffee were well known since it was found. It was medically proved that ... Show more content on

Additionally, the owners of the coffee houses were usually run by widows, a coffee women . This was
pretty contradictable because women were not allowed to stay in any coffee houses, besides specific
ladies coffee houses which they could attend to discuss the same topics as their husbands did.
However, all services there were provided by women.
Coffee houses were open for everyone and owners tried to equalize their visitors. It was unacceptable
to emphasize the person s social status. However, people were divided by their different political,
science or social views. People who wanted to get free education could join the scholar conversation.
It, also, gave the opportunity to learn something new from newspapers, pamphlets or any advertising

Standage, Newton presented his principle of universal gravitation in the coffee house, where he was
challenged by Hooke and they had an agreement about it. Oon the other hand, politicians would
debate on the topic of new treaties or laws and decrease the power of the Parliament and King. Barrell
states that coffee houses became the places where official politicians organized meetings of societies
such as London Corresponding Society (LCS) or National Convention.
Coffee houses were major centers of political dissent. For example, there were puritan coffee houses

The Battle Of The Punic Wars

THE PUNIC WARS
During the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C., three wars were fought between Rome and Carthage. The
name given to describe the wars Punic, is a divided word from the Latin and Greek words for
Phoenician. The city of Carthage, situated in what is now Tunisia in North Africa, was founded in 814
B.C. by the Phoenicians. The first two wars were the longest 23 years and 17 years, separated by an
interval of 23 years. The last and third war lasted only three years. It started 52 years after the end of
the second Punic War. All three wars were won by Rome, which automatically emerged as the greatest
military power in the Mediterranean Sea. The hostility of Carthage impelled Rome to build up its large
army and create a strong navy just like the one Carthage had. Strong military leaders of the war for
Carthage and his sons Hasdrubal and Hannibal. Rome s outstanding leaders were Scipio Africanus.
Belief holds that Phoenician settlers from the Mediterranean port of Tyre discovered the city state of
Carthage on the northern coast of Africa. By 265 B.C., Carthage was the richest and the most
advanced city in the region, as well as its prominent naval power. Through Carthage had clashed
forcefully with several other powers in the region, notably Greece, its relations with Rome were
historically friendly, and its cities had signed several treaties defining trading rights over the years. By
275 B.C. Rome had brought

Analysis Of John Locke s The Cold Soldier And Douglas...
John Locke argues in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, that personal identity is contingent
upon the memories that people form. In essence, the ever changing body is not a factor into defining
who a person is. The consciousness of a subject puts memory into motion and thus, creating his or her
identity. The main ideas behind Locke s theory are still discussed today. However, fictional characters
in movies prove that it they are inadequate. Prominent examples include: Neo in The Matrix, Bucky
Barnes in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Douglas Quail in We Will Remember It for You
Whole Sale. These characters set a precedence that confirms the invalidity of Locke s theory as their
identities are not based their continuous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the extensive abilities Neo acquired in the Matrix, most notably the ability to dodge bullets,
proves that he lives, thinks, and occupies his body in the Matrix. This evidence suggests that the body
more than just a framework for memories. It also makes his experiences tangible, by providing a
gateway to perceive the world around him. Neo has a more intimate connection to his body than
Locke s theory articulates, and precluding it causes detriment to his personal identity. Neo s
experience with his new body in the Matrix is immense. As he syncs into his new body, he
immediately grasps the sense of how it operates when Cypher uploads presets of knowledge into
brain. He is unsurprised by his body s instant mastery of martial arts and rashly challenges Morpheus
in a sparring match. Any blind jump into a recently learned task would prove disorientating and
frustrating. However, this is not the case, as Neo effortlessly displays adept fighting skills and
eventually defeats Morpheus. Additionally, he requires no training wheels to adjust to any other task
he performs within the Matrix. This challenges the legitimacy of Locke s theory as Neo s subjective
consciousness interprets a new method of how to direct himself in the Matrix. In the final scene,
Trinity s love resurrects Neo, signifying that the body plays an integral part in constructing personal
identity. Trinity s love, along with the

Drinking Water In Canada
In summation, it is apparent that First Nations communities in Canada are deprived of their basic
human right to clean water. Canada has failed to effectively address the issue as its policies tend to
disregard Aboriginal People s right to safe drinking water. A significant portion of the responsibility
falls on the Crown as it is the responsibility of the Canadian government to ensure that all its citizens
have equal opportunities and resources. The literature reviews examined in this paper demonstrates
that the problem of the water crisis in First Nations communities is rooted from the systematic
discrimination that transpired post colonialism. Consequently, this paper advanced that there is a need
to design and implement a new federal policy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Various scholars have supported this premise as they have concluded that as a nation, Canada, needs
to act on its belief without excluding the rights of its citizens. First Nations communities should have
quality water guaranteed and provided to them. Water should be considered as an important right
because it involves Aboriginal Peoples health and safety. A national federal water law would help
ensure that at the very minimum that water is a human right that needs to be recognized, protected and
readily available to everyone. At the very least, acknowledging water as a human right would be the
first steps to combating systemic discrimination. Subsequently, policy entrepreneurs should seek to
consult with First Nations to ensure that their voices will be heard equally during the decision making
process that involves the lives of Aboriginal peoples. This issue is of significance because Aboriginal
people should be treated as equal members of the Canadian society. Thereby, recognizing and
providing quality water to on reserve First Nations communities will ultimately reinforce Canadian
values, justice, and human

and more specifically, why English is not the national language. Among these people is Dennis Baron,
who publishes his thoughts on this topic very often. One of his essays, considered a proposal, is titled
Don t Make English Official Ban It Instead and discusses a new way of approaching English as the

Donald Trump Polarization
On Tuesday November 9th 2016, Donald Trump was elected president of the United States of

inexperienced and ran his campaign capitalizing on the nation s economic concerns and fears. His
racial remarks and sexual assault allegations seemed to be overlooked by voters and seemed to benefit

Due to this, core issues such as gun women rights, health care or immigration, to name a few, are
polarized politician s options will align with that of their voter. The same model of individual learning
that underlies these results gives rise to ideological polarization, confirming the association of
polarization with deliberation. Polarization through deliberation comes about because individuals who
are not great at making indirect inferences from unpersuasive arguments learn more (or, put
differently, receive more information perceive as relevant) from sources that are biased in the direction
of their own prior biases, and in learning from those sources, they learn in a way that strengthens and
accentuates those prior biases (Dimitri. 2015. 93 94). Each party views the other negatively and
politics are personal with liberals and conservatives sharing the passion equally. The divide is there
and Donald Trump s views and statements played right into this growing separation in ideology and
unwillingness to compromise to create a better nation for all. In the end, there may not be any one shot

This particular book collected data from the students about which type of food they liked most and
used pictures of the food to represent that number.
The bar graph was introduced after the picture graph. The information used in the picture graph was
transferred to a bar graph to show the students the same information in a different format.
The line graph was introduced at the end of third grade, but not in much detail. In this edition, the line
graph is used to display a person s height from birth to 10 years of age.
The circle graph, also known as a pie chart or graph, was introduced after the line graph. The example
in the book was someone keeping track and showing how they spend their day. This is a good example
of how to get the students involved. They could easily keep a schedule of their day and make a circle
graph. That sounds like a great extra credit project to me.
Other skills introduced in this book includes using tally marks to collect the data for your charts, using
number lines to introduce negative and positive numbers, and using that number line to solve
problems.

Trinity Essay
When you think of God do you think of one divine entity or do you take into account the age old idea
of the Trinity? For all of time we have understood the three individual person s in God, the Trinity, to
be one in the same. The teaching of the Christian church tells us that God is three unique and separate
people s, but they are at the same time all one person in God. Now people have many different ways to
picture or represent the idea of three people as one. The trial of history has come up with many
different ideas and images to try and represent the Trinity. Like many things that have to do with the
unknown nature of religion we put our mental limitations on our ideas. This is only natural because it
is the only way we can comprehend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally the three coins are used because the coins are all cast from the same pot of substance to make
them. This can be cut down even further to say it has to be three coins made out of the same coin.
These are all different ways to try and explain an idea of what the Trinity is representative of. So to
start explaining the meaning of the Trinity we believe in God the Father Almighty. God begot his son
Jesus and sent forth the Holy Spirit, This is saying that these other two people came directly from the
being of God. This makes them directly a part of God. They are all of the same person however and
have their own individual identities. Many may get confused when they look at the Christian religion
and see that we believe in one God yet there are three distinct people. The Creator, the Savior, and the
Teacher are the distinct person s one would see yet the Trinity is how we understand them all to be one
God. So the meaning of the Trinity is to strengthen our belief in one God by explaining how he is
three person s in one. Next we must understand what the function of the Trinity is. The best way to
explain the function of the Trinity is to use the analogy of the chain. The Trinity work together and are
linked directly to one another to make one strong bond and to complete different tasks. First off God is
the all powerful creator. He made all that exists in the universe. He is the watcher of everything that

Reflection Of Rene And Rene Mora s Life
Rene, Rene Mora; I think that name will forever be engraved on my heart. As a little girl, I already had
my whole life planned out, but what didn t come to plan was being put into juvenile probation at
sixteen. His parents and my mother met in mandatory parenting classes, there, our parents would sit
and compare their children to each other. I had already known of Rene because we were attending the
same high school at the time, and the fact that I would always hear about him fighting at school, but
never would I had imagined that I would end up dating the kid. We officially met while we were both
in bad moments of our lives, but Rene ended up saving me in every day that a person can be saved.
Sociological imagination is the awareness of the relationship between personal experience and the
wider society; it is understanding that some things in society may lead to a certain outcome. I like to
think it as stepping into someone else s shoes, I always do this before I throw away food or clothes.
Rene suffered with a high tolerance of anxiety; he reacted fast to something while he was full of anger,
and then apologized for it after a short period of time. These days, we unfortunately still live in a
society where some young men think proving themselves to others makes them real or down. A lot of
them don t think abut loosing their freedom or family, until they are behind a steel door or dead. Our

The World Of Trade And Business, The Industrial Revolution...
Name Institution Course Unit Lecturer Date Introduction In the world of trade and business, the
industrial revolution is a period in which most of the modern global economic superpowers
established their foundation. This was a period between the 18th and the 19th centuries in which rural,
agrarian societies in America and Europe were transformed and became urban and industrial. Prior to
this period that began in Britain; the manufacturing was mainly done in homes through hand tools and
other basic machines that were not widely in use (MacLeod). The period of industrialization marked
the beginning of a shift to power, specialized machinery, mass production and factories. Among other
industries, the iron and textile industries played a major role assisted by the development of the steam
engine. These developments saw the improvement of transportation, banking and communication
(Hillstrom). Despite the restrictions that had been placed on the artisans and other shareholders in
Britain to avoid a situation where industrial knowledge was leaked to other countries, her interests in
colonies opened up avenues through information and knowledge moved to other regions such as
America. Factors leading to industrialization in America The embargo of 1807 The embargo of 1807
is one of the key reasons that led to America rethinking her approach on development. During the

The Dark Knight Essay
The Dark Knight is grimly magisterial. It s a summer blockbuster that contemplates near total civic
disaster: Crowds surge, tractor trailers flip, and buildings explode, but the pop violence feels heavy,
mournful. Light barely escapes the film s gravitational pull. Yet flitting through this 10 ton
expressionist murk is a diseased butterfly with stringy hair and a maniacal giggle. Played by a dead
actor, he s the most alive thing here. It s not quite fair to say that the late Heath Ledger steals The Dark
Knight from Christian Bale and the forces of (problematic) good, but, as the Joker, he is the movie s
animating principle and anarchic spark an unstoppable force colliding with the immovable objects of

Confusion reigns in the opening scenes; loose threads abound toward the end (including one major
figure literally left hanging). Yet the generous midsection works as an agonized big muscle action film
about a conflicted superhero. As Bruce Wayne, Bale is gravely shallow, and he lacks the sense of fun
Robert Downey Jr. gave his obscenely rich playboy in Iron Man. Bruce uses his secret identity as a
hidden camera to glean information from the city s upper echelons, but he s not quite there otherwise.
This, oddly, is what makes him interesting, both to us and to assistant DA and ex girlfriend Rachel
Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, taking over from Katie Holmes and providing the character at last with a
spine and a brain). Batman s a whole other story. The filmmakers have worked out the mask problems
from the previous film; Bale fills the suit with grace and danger. His voice is disguised as well it s now
a bass heavy synthesized whisper. The character seems more than ever an extension of his high tech
toys (like the neat o Bat scooter that pops out of the Batmobile at one point, ecstatically rearing up like
the Lone Ranger s Silver). He represents a citizen s darkest urges, though, and it eats at him. He s

Archduke Ferdinand Causes
It is taught in social studies classes around the world that the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of
Austria Hungary was the direct cause of World War One, but there were actually many underlying
causes that led up to the start of the war. What many people fail to realize is that the many underlying
causes that were already prevalent were the real cause of the war. The underlying causes can be
broken down into four subcategories: militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. The

Imperialism is when a country takes over new lands or countries and makes them subject to their rule.
( World War One Causes ). Some countries took over other lands for natural resources/raw materials
that they needed to make industrial goods, just like Japan did in the twentieth century. Other countries
such as Germany conquered colonies because they wanted an empire. This caused conflict over
colonies, especially in Africa. ( Long term underlying causes of war 1). In the 19th century, Europeans
started to explore The Dark Continent known as Africa. Africa was known as The Dark Continent
because no one has explored it yet. European countries starting taking over African colonies in this
Scramble for Africa once their missionaries started to explore Africa, and come back to their countries
with reports of abundant natural resources such as gold, ivory, and salt. With many world powers
competing to get the most colonies they can, conflicts between nations surfaced. This was seen during
the Boer War, which was between the British and Dutch with the help of Germany fighting over South
Africa. This now sparked a new tension between the British and the Germans. The more colonies
owned by a nation, the more powerful the nation seemed. This is the reason the Austro Hungarian
empire annexed Bosnia Herzegovina in 1908. The annexation greatly inflamed Serbian nationalism. (

Characteristics Of The Tiger
In The Jungle Book, the tiger named Shere Khan plays the villain. Although the movie makes the tiger
look evil, it s actually just a normal animal trying to survive in the wild like any other. Tigers are one
of the biggest cats and they are carnivores. They have a territorial behavior and they are sadly
endangered. Adult tigers are huge. They are 2.3 to 4 feet tall. Tigers also weigh a lot. A male tiger
weighs 200 to 670 pounds. Female tigers weigh from 140 to 370 pounds. Cubs can weigh 2.2 pounds
at birth. As Whitfield puts it The largest of the big cats, the tiger has a massive, muscular body and
powerful limbs. (pg 147). Tigers are massive animals. Tigers also have long bodies. A male s body
length is from 8.2ft to 13ft. Females can be as long as 6.6 to 9ft. They can live from 20 to 26 years.
Tigers can have two to four cubs every two years. Also according to the WWF On average, tigers give
birth to two to four cubs every two years. If all the cubs in one litter die, a second litter may be
produced within five months. (WWF,2017) . Tigers are known as one of the largest cats in the world.
Also they are orange with black stripes, kind of like a zebra, but a zebra is white. No two tigers will
have the same number of markings on their coats. Since, a tiger is a large cat, they will need to eat a
lot of meat. According to Amelia Meyers in her website tigers.org, tigers have 30 teeth, which...help
them to grip struggling prey, break bones and rip flesh. Tigers

Deanna Kuhn Theory Of Cognitive Development
A present time, there are many developmental theories, which cover cognitive, socio emotional, and
physical. Among those theorists, for the purpose of this post, I will be considering two of them. First, I
will be reviewing the Russian psychologist Lev Vygostsky and his sociocultural theory. Next, I will be
looking at Deanna Kuhn and the Metacognitive development theory. One of the psychologists who
made a significant contribution and stimulated a lot of studies in addressing the cultural impact in
human development was Vygostsky. He introduced the sociocultural theory, which focused on culture
transmission from one generation to another. He also theorized with social interaction, children to
acquire the way of thinking and behaving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The definition of metacognition has been broadened to thoughts about thoughts and affective states,
motives, intentions and the ability to consciously and deliberately monitor and regulate one s
knowledge, processes, cognitive and affective states, motives and intentions (Papaleontiou Louca,
2008). Kuhn believes that metacognition is a high level construct, which can be conceptualized in a
developmental framework. Additionally during development young children, they develop capabilities
of metaknowing that many adult do not master. Therefore in early age metacognitive achievements
serve as foundations of higher order thinking in adulthood, which include scientific thinking (Kuhn,
2000). She believes that knowing have to have a purpose or a goal because the simple fact of knowing
what you know does not have much impact on your knowledge unless that knowledge serves a
purpose. So in this developmental framework, she suggested that there are two terms: metastrategic
knowing which refers to metaknowing about procedural knowing. Metastrategic knowing can be then
divided into metatask knowledge about task goals and metastrategic knowledge referring to strategies
a person has available to meets the goals (Kuhn, 2000). Metastrategic and metacognitive are important
because they provide an explanation to as to why cognitive development occurs or fails to occur.
Additionally the metacognition development has laid foundations for contemporary theories of

The Other Side Of The River By Alex Kotlowitz
Tiefenbach 1
Benjamin Tiefenbach
Professor Ned Watts

17 March 2015
Twin Cities, Twin Races Reading the book, The Other Side of the River, by Alex Kotlowitz, the author
writes about the relationship between two towns in Michigan, and the death of a young boy named
Eric McGinnis. The two towns, Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, are called the Twin Cities , but are
ironically not related in any way. St. Joseph is 95 percent white, while Benton Harbor is impoverished
and is 92 percent black. Throughout the book Kotlowitz questions the residents from both towns and
how they are affected by the environment around them. The author also starts with the climax on the
first page of the book the death of Eric, and uses this as an technique to tell the story of the
disagreements between the two towns. With the murder of Eric, Kotlowitz identifies the climax at the
beginning of the book and how it has been affecting the two towns which are physically only two and
a half miles apart, and the river that flows between them only being a quarter of a mile wide. St.
Joseph is a rich area while Benton Harbor is in poverty. This is relevant to the state of Michigan
because many bodies of people migrate to certain regions of the state and are easily divided by
different cultures and beliefs. Even with a small river providing the gap between these two regions,
Michigan is known for its divided groups of people. With this division, the death of Eric with his
drowning in the river resided

My Nana In My Life
As a young adult I often find myself staring at the clock watching it change second by second, minute
by minute, wondering why it goes so slow when we have so much time. Though something I ve
learned throughout the past few years is the doleful reality that we don t get to choose how much time
we spend on this earth, the greatest thing we can do is take our allotted time and occupy it wisely, by
spending it with people we love and creating memories no amount of time can erase. My nana was
someone who throughout my life, always pushed me to do my best. She continually inspired me to be
strong and independent, while never letting me forget it s okay to lean on others when you re down. It
was the simple things she did that made me want to follow her every step; the way her sparkling
sapphire eyes brought life to every conversation, the way she danced around the kitchen to Michael
Buble while she cleaned, or the astounding way she always knew what to say to exile my fears. There
was an aura about her that drew people in, she was the type of person to make a friend in the doughnut
isle at Meijer and call them once a month to see how they re doing (true story); she was truly pure and
selfless. Everybody deserves to have someone like my nana in their lives to pick them up when they
fall, to comfort them when they re scared, but most importantly to show them how to be strong and
level headed when life challenges you in the most unexpected ways. I was thirteen when

The Pros And Cons Of Dental Amalgams
Professor Kostelecky, before starting this paper I didn t have the slightest idea what an amalgam was
or why it causes so much controversy in the realm of dentistry. The controversy originates from the
material that primarily makes up amalgams; that material is mercury. Now that this debate has
commenced, dentists, scientists, and corporate organizations everywhere are arguing whether the use
of amalgams should be banned or should remain a growing practice. Because I plan to study dentistry
in the future I figured this would be a good topic to prepare me for my future education. Before I
discuss the three main points of view regarding amalgams, I want to give you some of the basic
background information. Dental amalgams are a type of filling used to fill cavities caused by decay in
the teeth. Amalgams are not the only type of filling offered by dentists; composite resin, cast gold,
ceramics, and glass ionomer are also used, but are not used near as much. Amalgams are the most
popular filling material and it has been this way since they were first introduced back in the 1800 s.
Each year billions of people invest in amalgams because they are long lasting, cheap, and durable, but
many researchers believe they could be detrimental to your health due to the main ingredient mercury
Amalgams are a mixture of metals; 50% is composed of mercury and the other 50% is composed of an
alloy, which in this case, is silver copper and tin. The problem with using mercury in amalgams is

Nursing Homes Are Now For A Five Star Rating System Essay
Quality Matters Nursing homes are now subject to a five star rating system called Nursing Home
Compare, described on the Medicare Web site. Simply inputting a nursing home s name or area code
allows a user to compare the quality of care at various locations. According to the article Aging well
written by Athan Bezaitis, he states that this is an important first step but it s not always a choice
system. Discharge agents at hospitals often make decisions regarding where older adults will go
following discharge. What are the views of older adults regarding Assisted Living Facilities (ALF)

guideline of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA). Mary states that with all
her chronic ailments and diseases, it is good for her to live within the LTC because her illness are
monitored and her medications are managed well. She further went on to say that if something goes
wrong, help is always readily available. Another lady who resides at an assisted living facility that I
operate gave me her views of living there. Her history is that of having dementia and she was
becoming so forgetful, she was scared of burning her home down. Therefore, she and her family

Comparison Of John Locke And Social Contract Theory
Before sociology was a true discipline of academia, there were philosophical thinkers that thought
about the many complexities that make society into what it is. While there are many different
philosophical thinkers that share different points of view and theories, it is important to see how they
compare and contrast to one another. One of the philosophical thinkers we read about, John Locke,
and his theory about the Natural State and Natural Laws that follow, is a valid yet more theist
approach to social contract theory. We also looked at the works of Adam Smith, a Scottish economist
who looks at the division of labor in societies and how society has evolved to become dependent on it.
The last thinker that was discussed in lecture and the readings is Harriet Martineau. Martineau was a
British researcher who went to the United States to study many aspects of American Society,
specifically using the sociological lense of conflict theory to help with her research.
John Locke was a 17th century British philosopher who helped lay the foregrounds for social contract
theory and sociology as a discipline. He believed that men are free in their actions and are, without the
interference of government, living in a state of nature. Locke lays down the basic principles that
greatly influenced the United States Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence
was not only an important document because it declared the United States free from British rule, but

Cultural Diversity in America: Examination of African Americans and Asian Americans Many ethnic
groups reside and persist in America. Minority groups are misunderstood and undervalued in today s

enduring in our country because of our abundant diversity. Two minority groups that are misconstrued
are African Americans and Asian Americans. These two groups of people have many differences, but

As time elapsed de jure segregation, also known as the Jim Crow system, began in the South that
replaced slavery in the South. According to Healey (2012), Under segregation, the minority group is
physically and socially separated from the dominant group and consigned to an inferior position in
virtually every area of social life (p. 182). Under state and local laws, African Americans were
considered inferior to Caucasians. All aspects of life were included in segregation such as schools,
restrooms, parks, stores, and any public facility. The civil rights movement began to eliminate laws
based on racial segregation. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education of
Topeka that separate facilities are unequal; therefore, the laws were unconstitutional, which abolished
de jure segregation (Healey, 2012, p. 233). During the civil rights movement there were many
influential leaders such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. promoting nonviolent protests.
Finally, in 1964 United States Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, outlawing discrimination
based on race, color, religion, national origin, or sex. This act was only the beginning as our nation is
still trying to eliminate discrimination completely. These important historical events have influenced
past and current African Americans. Asian

Based on the decline of the Karner blue across its historic range, it was listed as endangered in 1992.
Since listing, two populations have been extirpated and are being reintroduced to Concord, New
Hampshire, and West Gary, Indiana. A third population is being reintroduced to Ohio. The threat of the
Karner blue butterfly extinction exists primarily from the loss of critical habitat caused by landscape
fragmentation, natural succession and concomitant suppression of the natural disturbance regime
(Smallidge 1996; Clough 1992).

Essay On Lincoln Chapter 4
The four guards had come together, not sure as to what to do. This turned out to be a big mistake. As
they were about to walk into the truck s rear, a device came flying out of it, bounced a few times, then
landed in the middle of those four.
By the time they looked down to see what it was, the grenade went off. It instantly killed the four
guards and sent everyone else flying backwards from where they were. As for Lincoln he went flying
back into a tower of large boxes. It hurt. He was now on his knees, feeling quite groggy and struggling
to get back his hearing.
Just after the grenade, another device came bouncing in from the back of the truck. This one was

not fire but bent over him and pulled his head back.
Got him over here! was what he said next. Then another military person appeared out of the mist and
the two of them grabbed Lincoln by the shoulders and literally dragged him towards the truck. Lincoln
was still groggy enough not to be able to resist. One of them grabbed his gun before he could do
anything.
Lincoln s only course of action now was to remain as still as possible. His feet dragged along the floor
until they all got to the truck. The two soldiers then took him down the stairs to the front of the truck.
They opened the door and flung him in. Lincoln was about to jump out again when one of them pulled
his rifle around and pointed it at him. Lincoln got back in and sat quietly.
After a moment or two, a soldier got in on the driver s side and another jumped into the passenger
side. Lincoln noted that one was a little short for a soldier. He was now surrounded by these soldiers
with no hope of escaping. The truck sped off down the alleyway and into the street.
Lincoln was slowly regaining his senses. He still thought this was an illusion but it suddenly occurred
to him that he was out of the warehouse. Maybe his mind manifested this scenario. He was

Steven Goldberg Male Dominance Theory
Male dominance A biology based theory on competitiveness is the male dominance theory . Developer
of this theory, Steven Goldberg, presents in his book why the biological difference between men and
women leads to male domination (1993). This biological difference is mainly based to be found the
difference in testosterone levels between men and women (Goldberg, 1993: 131). The level of
testosterone would result in men having greater tendencies to be aggressive and a drive to dominate
others. This aggressive advantage would men also make more competitive and self assertive. In
combination this leads to men being more elicited to be dominant on average than women on average.
Men s aggressive advantage would especially stand out in situations that are hierarchically structured.
Goldberg expands his theory by connecting the previous with the presence of institutions as he argues
that testosterone is a required condition for creating institutions (Golberg, 1993; 131). Through this he
suggests that the testosterone induced dominance is a necessity in building hierarchies. In all,
Goldbergs theory does not state that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

voice Gilligan describes the different moral voices that men and women have. Men would be more
individualistic, oriented towards achievement and gaining power than women. Women on the other
hand, would be more selfless and concerned with the needs of others (Gilligan, 1982). The female
moral believe system would be consistently repressed by societal norms that are built around the male
psychological tendencies. With that, men would maintain a justice perspective where moral is created
through rights and formal reasoning. Women however, would be associated with the care perspective

Rhetorical Analysis Of Ezra Pound s His Philosophy And...
Ezra Pound was one of the most famous and influential figures in the Modernist literature movement.
Make it new was his philosophy and the rallying cry for Modernist literature. Whilst the Modernists
tried to capture the new by a persistent experimentalism , it rejected the traditional (Victorian and
Edwardian) framework of narrative, description, and rational exposition in poetry and prose .
Modernist literature not only rejected the old in terms of form, but also in subject matter Modernism
began to focus more on the self, on the internal dialogue. Whilst Post Modernism is much harder to
define, one thing that is prolific in Postmodern literature is the re working and imitation of the past in
the form of parody and pastiche. What I find interesting is that whilst Modernist were driven by the
desire to create something new, they were mostly benighted traditionalists that were reacting to the
change around them. The Postmodernists however, were not lamenting change but using literature in a
way that hoped to stimulate it. I am going to look at this with a specific focus on The Waste Land by
T.S. Eliot and The Crying Lot of 49 by Thomas Pynchon.
Of course neither Modernist Literature nor Postmodernist literature existed in a vacuum. They were
both parts of wider movements as a whole The Modernist movement and the Postmodernist
movement. The Modernist period occurred during a time of great change rapid industrialisation and
new media which disrupted the class

Antwone Fisher Symbolism
Throughout the two movies, Gus Van Sant and Denzel Washington used both language and stylistic
features to present the idea of a personal journey, in particular, through the use of symbolism. In the
film, Antwone fisher, Washington uses a symbol of women. The beginning of the film shows how
Antwone was mistreated and abused as a child through flashbacks. In this case the symbol of women
is used to symbolise worthlessness and insignificance as he is abused and beaten by his foster mother
and raped by his foster sister. As the film progresses Antwon meets and becomes romantically
involved with a woman, Cheryl, who is also in the navy. With Cheryl by his side Antwone is able to

Later as his maths skills become more and more evident to the professor, will is offered job

By using symbolism as a stylistic feature Gus Van Sant and Denzel Washington are able to
successfully present the idea of a personal journey to their intended audiences.
Social language
Both Gus Van Sant and Denzel Washington successfully use language to present the idea of the
journey in their films however each one uses a different form of language. In Antwone Fisher,
Antwone uses body language or violence to shut people out and create a shield between his emotions
and the outside world, protecting people from getting to him and hurting him. When Antwone starts
seeing a councillor he learns to talk about his feelings and learns to deal with his anger without
violence. In the end of the film Antwone is a different man. He is calm and much more happier and
open as he has learnt to open up about his feelings and deal with emotions in a constructive way. He
learns to talk to people rather than just turning to violence to solve his issues. This shows a social
journey as Antwone learns to talk to people about how he feels rather than putting up a wall and using
violence to shut people out.

Capital Punishment And Capital Involvement
Capital punishment is an individual punishment to death for committing a crime. The history of
capital punishment fluctuates worldwide, between different governments and beliefs. The current
issue of capital punishment is taking lives without having a reliable reason to take them to the death
penalty. One large and main issue is that capital punishment breaches, or breaks two essential human
rights, which are the rights to life, and rights to living free of torture. This is a huge issue because an
individual should not be able to surpass any conditions when the operations of the executions go
against human rights. Another opposition of capital punishment is that many countries are sided with
the penalties, however, the citizens of the country may think differently dependant on their religions
and beliefs. The opposition between the government and the population in the country is another large
issue because the diverse opinion only makes matters worse. Though many countries remain to argue
that the punishments are beneficial, terminating the legal penalty would save thousands of lives.
Discontinuing the penalties would benefit the whole world by cutting the large amount of taxes just
for individual deaths, and the new adjustment would save lives from false reasons, and
misunderstandings.
UN Involvement: The main participant into capital punishment is the OHCHR or the Office of the
High Commissioner for Human Rights. The committee is helping with the global issue by having

  • 2. How Does Chaucer Use Satire In The Canterbury Tales The Canterbury Tales In the medieval age there are norms that people in a society are supposed to abide by. In this time, there was a lot of wars dividing the nations and changed how people lived. The black plague also devastated the nation in many ways. During this time, if you weren t a noble or part of the church, then you didn t really have any power or voice in your society. Chaucer uses elements of the other or otherness to satire religion, social structure, and patriarchal institutions to show how corrupt these groups are in hope to change people s mind about these groups and institutions. During the medieval ages the church was supposed to be a person s main priority. Chaucer uses satire to show the corruption of the church through the character, the Friar . The Friar gets otherred for scapegoating. The Friar was supposed to take donations from the church and give it to the poor. Chaucer s Friar takes takes those donations from the church but doesn t give them to the poor, but in fact he takes it for himself. The Friar was also there to help people with their marriages giving the ladies what he could afford her (GP 217). The Friar had a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chaucer uses satire to point out the problems within the noble class through the character the Knight. The Knight gets alienated by the society because of his actions. The Knight, who is sought to be honorable and noble, is quite the opposite in this situation. The Knight is accused of rape and is sent a summons (GP76) from the queen to decide his fate. Chaucer decides to have his character, the Knight, act like this to demonstrate that not all noble people are good people. The Knight is otherred by his society and queen unless he can tell the queen the thing that women most desire (GP81) within a year. If the Knight can do that, the queen will not kill him. That s not the only way that the Knight is otherred in the canterbury ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Sociological Concepts Of Family, Gender, And Identity Essay This essay discusses the way in which I understand the sociological concepts of family, gender and race nuclear family, doing gender, and identity, in particular. Arguably, these three concepts can relate to each individuals life, through different personal experiences. To demonstrate my argument, I highlight relevant situations in my own life that further explain my chosen sociological concepts. The first concept I chose to focus on is family. In particular, the idea of the nuclear family . A nuclear family is defined as: A couple and their dependent children, regarded as a basic social unit. My research of this concept will focus on the theories of two sociologists George Peter Murdock, and Talcott Parsons. George Murdock s theory suggests that there are four essential functions of an ideal family. 1. Stable satisfaction of the sex drive, 2. The biological reproduction of the next generation, 3. Socialisation of the young, 4. Meeting its members economic needs (Thompson, 2014). According to Murdock, these four components are what keep the structure of the basic family unit intact, and by achieving these four functions create an ideal family model. An opposing theory is Talcott Parson s functional fit theory. Parson suggests that as society evolves, alternative forms of family life become more accepted. Society has progressed so much that single parents providing for their children is as normal as a nuclear family, and there tends to be less need for extended ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Small Town Personal Statement Personal Statement Many people think that living in a small town can limit the perspective of one s mind, leaving one to believe that hardly anything exists beyond the boards of one s town. Enumclaw is a small town I love; everyone knows everyone, local grocery store you got to know the person that works there, small mountains, old parks, greens fields filled with cows. Growing up in Enumclaw was different there was not weekends spent at the mall, not too much going on in town, and not a lot of movement, everything in Enumclaw is slow and calm. The weekends would be consisted of getting up early to ride the tractor with your father and sit on his lap as if you were driving, quading, or hiking Mt.Peak. This town is where I call home and I love my home because its where I feel safe, happy and where grew a great connection to. I remember my childhood like if I was five years old again; it was the best time of my life, getting woken up by the sound of the lawn mower. My dad was always up early, working at the farm. I remember elementary school and seeing the same faces in some of my classes tell this day. I met my best friend in kindergarten and I m still really good friends. Growing up in a small town there was always the same faces and same people working at the local grocery store, it takes around a minute to walk through town, most of the time you can take a bike to your friend s house, walking to school wasn t that hard because it s not far and of course the same old smell of ... • 5. Case Study Of London Underground The company London Underground has managed to survive through partnerships with other stakeholders to improve the rail transport sector. It is not easy for partnerships and collaborations to last for long without proper management and leadership in place. By choosing this company as the case study, it provides answers on how to well sustain partnerships for the good of commuters. Stakeholders have different expectations and cultures and incorporating them into a general agenda for a particular company can be quite a challenge. Mechanisms used by the London Underground company to cement these partnerships can be copied by other companies not only in the rail industry but other sectors too. This is a plus that needs to be shared by the different industries too. Another reason for choosing London Underground as a case study was to help understand their financial system. This looks into sources of financing and how to effectively utilize the available finances for the good of commuters and workers too. Such a big company must need quite an enormous financial budget to sustain most of their services. A way as to how they utilize the money allocated to them for both service provision and staff maintenance could be a great learning tool for other stakeholders. An inventory system, a proper recording system, and audit plans are key in ensuring financial management. The study would establish how the company integrates all these factors to achieve transparent resource utilization and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Battle Of The Punic Wars Joel Medero History Western Civilization Professor Smail THE PUNIC WARS During the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C., three wars were fought between Rome and Carthage. The name given to describe the wars Punic, is a divided word from the Latin and Greek words for Phoenician. The city of Carthage, situated in what is now Tunisia in North Africa, was founded in 814 B.C. by the Phoenicians. The first two wars were the longest 23 years and 17 years, separated by an interval of 23 years. The last and third war lasted only three years. It started 52 years after the end of the second Punic War. All three wars were won by Rome, which automatically emerged as the greatest military power in the Mediterranean Sea. The hostility of Carthage impelled Rome to build up its large army and create a strong navy just like the one Carthage had. Strong military leaders of the war for Carthage and his sons Hasdrubal and Hannibal. Rome s outstanding leaders were Scipio Africanus. In essence, the ever changing body is not a factor into defining who a person is. The consciousness of a subject puts memory into motion and thus, creating his or her identity. The main ideas behind Locke s theory are still discussed today. However, fictional characters in movies prove that it they are inadequate. However, the extensive abilities Neo acquired in the Matrix, most notably the ability to dodge bullets, proves that he lives, thinks, and occupies his body in the Matrix. This evidence suggests that the body more than just a framework for memories. It also makes his experiences tangible, by providing a gateway to perceive the world around him. Neo has a more intimate connection to his body than Locke s theory articulates, and precluding it causes detriment to his personal identity. Neo s experience with his new body in the Matrix is immense. As he syncs into his new body, he immediately grasps the sense of how it operates when Cypher uploads presets of knowledge into brain. He is unsurprised by his body s instant mastery of martial arts and rashly challenges Morpheus in a sparring match. Any blind jump into a recently learned task would prove disorientating and frustrating. However, this is not the case, as Neo effortlessly displays adept fighting skills and eventually defeats Morpheus. Additionally, he requires no training wheels to adjust to any other task he performs within the Matrix. This challenges the legitimacy of Locke s theory as Neo s subjective consciousness interprets a new method of how to direct himself in the Matrix. In the final scene, Trinity s love resurrects Neo, signifying that the body plays an integral part in constructing personal identity. Trinity s love, along with the ... For all of time we have understood the three individual person s in God, the Trinity, to be one in the same. The teaching of the Christian church tells us that God is three unique and separate people s, but they are at the same time all one person in God. Now people have many different ways to picture or represent the idea of three people as one. The trial of history has come up with many different ideas and images to try and represent the Trinity. This can be cut down even further to say it has to be three coins made out of the same coin. These are all different ways to try and explain an idea of what the Trinity is representative of. So to start explaining the meaning of the Trinity we believe in God the Father Almighty. God begot his son Jesus and sent forth the Holy Spirit, This is saying that these other two people came directly from the being of God. This makes them directly a part of God. They are all of the same person however and have their own individual identities. Many may get confused when they look at the Christian religion and see that we believe in one God yet there are three distinct people. The Creator, the Savior, and the Teacher are the distinct person s one would see yet the Trinity is how we understand them all to be one God. So the meaning of the Trinity is to strengthen our belief in one God by explaining how he is three person s in one. Next we must understand what the function of the Trinity is. The best way to explain the function of the Trinity is to use the analogy of the chain. The Trinity work together and are linked directly to one another to make one strong bond and to complete different tasks. First off God is the all powerful creator. Name Institution Course Unit Lecturer Date Introduction In the world of trade and business, the industrial revolution is a period in which most of the modern global economic superpowers established their foundation. This was a period between the 18th and the 19th centuries in which rural, agrarian societies in America and Europe were transformed and became urban and industrial. Prior to this period that began in Britain; the manufacturing was mainly done in homes through hand tools and other basic machines that were not widely in use (MacLeod). Among other industries, the iron and textile industries played a major role assisted by the development of the steam engine. These developments saw the improvement of transportation, banking and communication (Hillstrom). Despite the restrictions that had been placed on the artisans and other shareholders in Britain to avoid a situation where industrial knowledge was leaked to other countries, her interests in colonies opened up avenues through information and knowledge moved to other regions such as America. The definition of metacognition has been broadened to thoughts about thoughts and affective states, motives, intentions and the ability to consciously and deliberately monitor and regulate one s knowledge, processes, cognitive and affective states, motives and intentions (Papaleontiou Louca, 2008). Kuhn believes that metacognition is a high level construct, which can be conceptualized in a developmental framework. Additionally during development young children, they develop capabilities of metaknowing that many adult do not master. Therefore in early age metacognitive achievements serve as foundations of higher order thinking in adulthood, which include scientific thinking (Kuhn, 2000). She believes that knowing have to have a purpose or a goal because the simple fact of knowing what you know does not have much impact on your knowledge unless that knowledge serves a purpose. So in this developmental framework, she suggested that there are two terms: metastrategic knowing which refers to metaknowing about procedural knowing. Metastrategic knowing can be then divided into metatask knowledge about task goals and metastrategic knowledge referring to strategies a person has available to meets the goals (Kuhn, 2000). The two towns, Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, are called the Twin Cities , but are ironically not related in any way. St. Joseph is 95 percent white, while Benton Harbor is impoverished and is 92 percent black. • 28. Comparison Of John Locke And Social Contract Theory Before sociology was a true discipline of academia, there were philosophical thinkers that thought about the many complexities that make society into what it is. While there are many different philosophical thinkers that share different points of view and theories, it is important to see how they compare and contrast to one another. One of the philosophical thinkers we read about, John Locke, and his theory about the Natural State and Natural Laws that follow, is a valid yet more theist approach to social contract theory. We also looked at the works of Adam Smith, a Scottish economist who looks at the division of labor in societies and how society has evolved to become dependent on it. The last thinker that was discussed in lecture and the readings is Harriet Martineau. Martineau was a British researcher who went to the United States to study many aspects of American Society, specifically using the sociological lense of conflict theory to help with her research. John Locke was a 17th century British philosopher who helped lay the foregrounds for social contract theory and sociology as a discipline. He believed that men are free in their actions and are, without the interference of government, living in a state of nature. Locke lays down the basic principles that greatly influenced the United States Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence was not only an important document because it declared the United States free from British rule, but rather ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Healey (2012), Under segregation, the minority group is physically and socially separated from the dominant group and consigned to an inferior position in virtually every area of social life (p. 182). Under state and local laws, African Americans were considered inferior to Caucasians. All aspects of life were included in segregation such as schools, restrooms, parks, stores, and any public facility. The civil rights movement began to eliminate laws based on racial segregation. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka that separate facilities are unequal; therefore, the laws were unconstitutional, which abolished de jure segregation (Healey, 2012, p. 233). During the civil rights movement there were many influential leaders such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. promoting nonviolent protests. Finally, in 1964 United States Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, or sex. This act was only the beginning as our nation is still trying to eliminate discrimination completely. These important historical events have influenced past and current African Americans. Asian ... Since listing, two populations have been extirpated and are being reintroduced to Concord, New Hampshire, and West Gary, Indiana. A third population is being reintroduced to Ohio. As they were about to walk into the truck s rear, a device came flying out of it, bounced a few times, then landed in the middle of those four. By the time they looked down to see what it was, the grenade went off. It instantly killed the four guards and sent everyone else flying backwards from where they were. As for Lincoln he went flying back into a tower of large boxes. It hurt. He was now on his knees, feeling quite groggy and struggling to get back his hearing. Then another military person appeared out of the mist and the two of them grabbed Lincoln by the shoulders and literally dragged him towards the truck. Lincoln was still groggy enough not to be able to resist. One of them grabbed his gun before he could do anything. Lincoln s only course of action now was to remain as still as possible. His feet dragged along the floor until they all got to the truck. The two soldiers then took him down the stairs to the front of the truck. They opened the door and flung him in. Lincoln was about to jump out again when one of them pulled his rifle around and pointed it at him. Lincoln got back in and sat quietly. After a moment or two, a soldier got in on the driver s side and another jumped into the passenger side. Lincoln noted that one was a little short for a soldier. He was now surrounded by these soldiers with no hope of escaping. The truck sped off down the alleyway and into the street. Lincoln was slowly regaining his senses. • 34. Steven Goldberg Male Dominance Theory Male dominance A biology based theory on competitiveness is the male dominance theory . Developer of this theory, Steven Goldberg, presents in his book why the biological difference between men and women leads to male domination (1993). This biological difference is mainly based to be found the difference in testosterone levels between men and women (Goldberg, 1993: 131). The level of testosterone would result in men having greater tendencies to be aggressive and a drive to dominate others. This aggressive advantage would men also make more competitive and self assertive. In combination this leads to men being more elicited to be dominant on average than women on average. Men s aggressive advantage would especially stand out in situations that are hierarchically structured. Goldberg expands his theory by connecting the previous with the presence of institutions as he argues that testosterone is a required condition for creating institutions (Golberg, 1993; 131). Through this he suggests that the testosterone induced dominance is a necessity in building hierarchies. In all, Goldbergs theory does not state that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Men would be more individualistic, oriented towards achievement and gaining power than women. Women on the other hand, would be more selfless and concerned with the needs of others (Gilligan, 1982). The female moral believe system would be consistently repressed by societal norms that are built around the male psychological tendencies. With that, men would maintain a justice perspective where moral is created through rights and formal reasoning. • 36. Rhetorical Analysis Of Ezra Pound s His Philosophy And... Ezra Pound was one of the most famous and influential figures in the Modernist literature movement. Make it new was his philosophy and the rallying cry for Modernist literature. Whilst the Modernists tried to capture the new by a persistent experimentalism , it rejected the traditional (Victorian and Edwardian) framework of narrative, description, and rational exposition in poetry and prose . Modernist literature not only rejected the old in terms of form, but also in subject matter Modernism began to focus more on the self, on the internal dialogue. Whilst Post Modernism is much harder to define, one thing that is prolific in Postmodern literature is the re working and imitation of the past in the form of parody and pastiche. What I find interesting is that whilst Modernist were driven by the desire to create something new, they were mostly benighted traditionalists that were reacting to the change around them. The Postmodernists however, were not lamenting change but using literature in a way that hoped to stimulate it. I am going to look at this with a specific focus on The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot and The Crying Lot of 49 by Thomas Pynchon. Of course neither Modernist Literature nor Postmodernist literature existed in a vacuum. They were both parts of wider movements as a whole The Modernist movement and the Postmodernist movement. The Modernist period occurred during a time of great change rapid industrialisation and new media which disrupted the class ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Antwone Fisher Symbolism Throughout the two movies, Gus Van Sant and Denzel Washington used both language and stylistic features to present the idea of a personal journey, in particular, through the use of symbolism. In the film, Antwone fisher, Washington uses a symbol of women. The beginning of the film shows how Antwone was mistreated and abused as a child through flashbacks. In this case the symbol of women is used to symbolise worthlessness and insignificance as he is abused and beaten by his foster mother and raped by his foster sister. Social language Both Gus Van Sant and Denzel Washington successfully use language to present the idea of the journey in their films however each one uses a different form of language. In Antwone Fisher, Antwone uses body language or violence to shut people out and create a shield between his emotions and the outside world, protecting people from getting to him and hurting him. He learns to talk to people rather than just turning to violence to solve his issues. • 38. Capital Punishment And Capital Involvement Capital punishment is an individual punishment to death for committing a crime. The history of capital punishment fluctuates worldwide, between different governments and beliefs. The current issue of capital punishment is taking lives without having a reliable reason to take them to the death penalty. One large and main issue is that capital punishment breaches, or breaks two essential human rights, which are the rights to life, and rights to living free of torture. This is a huge issue because an individual should not be able to surpass any conditions when the operations of the executions go against human rights. Another opposition of capital punishment is that many countries are sided with the penalties, however, the citizens of the country may think differently dependant on their religions and beliefs. The opposition between the government and the population in the country is another large issue because the diverse opinion only makes matters worse. Though many countries remain to argue that the punishments are beneficial, terminating the legal penalty would save thousands of lives. Discontinuing the penalties would benefit the whole world by cutting the large amount of taxes just for individual deaths, and the new adjustment would save lives from false reasons, and misunderstandings.
