Evaluation Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Preliminary Task Final Production
Preliminary Task Final Production
PROGRESSION
From my preliminary task, I think my main improvement was learning
to use a camera and lighting properly to produce high quality
images. When taking the image for my preliminary task I didn’t
change any camera settings such as the ISO or aperture, however I
used YouTube tutorials whilst producing my final production to learn
how to change these settings. I also used tutorials to learn how to
effectively edit my images to get the desired effect I wanted from
them.
I spent a lot more time planning and considering the mise en scene
for my final production than I did for my preliminary task. For
example, I carefully chose the background I put my models against
and the clothes they wore. This showed a clear improvement from
my preliminary task as my final production had much higher
production values and a lot more thought and attention for detail was
applied to it.
FONTS
I used Photoshop fonts for my preliminary task, but found that dafont.com had a bigger variety of fonts which enabled
me to easily fulfil my target audiences wants and needs, I also found that the fonts I downloaded off of dafont.com
emphasised the indie genre of my magazine a lot more effectively. I mainly used sans serif fonts in my final production,
as it was more appropriate for my audience and was a common convention in the magazines that I researched. In my
final production I used the technique of making some words bold, some italic and some in capital letters in order to
emphasise and differentiate certain words to my audience.
RESEARCH
I did a lot more research into my final production than I did my preliminary task, this allowed me to
understand and fulfil the cognitive and integrative needs of my target audience. This intensive
research also allowed me to view codes and conventions of existing media, making my final
production look a lot more professional.
I also researched a lot into relevant theories, such as reception theory and uses and gratifications
theory. This allowed me to cater a lot for my target audience and it had a big influence on the final
outcome, making it more targeting and specific to my audience.
Conducted research posted on my blog:
LAYOUT
I feel that I have significantly improved the layout from my preliminary task, especially for my contents page. By researching
existing media and communicating with my focus group, I was able to produce a contents page that suited my target
audience’s needs. The use of columns and headings allows my audience to quickly find their category of interest, fulfilling their
cognitive and informative needs. I also made my final contents page more image heavy, decreased the size of the font and
added a competition and social media section. I did this because stereotypically, the people within my target audience ( young
adults ) would prefer more images and less text, and also would appreciate being given the ability to connect with my
magazine over social media and keep updated in between issues.
I was able to apply my new knowledge from creating my preliminary task, researching existing media and watching
tutorials into my double page spread also. I continuously acquired skills in order to improve from my preliminary
task to my final production. These skills also helped me to make my double page spread look professional, and also
allowed me to fulfil the needs of my target audience.
CONCLUSION
- In conclusion, the the quality of my final production was greatly improved due to the
techniques and theories I learnt along the way. Learning how to operate the canon
camera properly and using photoshop to enhance my images made a great impact in the
difference between my preliminary task and my final production.
- If I hadn’t learnt about these factors, my magazine wouldn’t of had a professional
consistency throughout. The research into codes and conventions also heavily impacted
the quality of my final production, as without it, I wouldn’t of been able to successfully fulfil
my target audience’s wants and needs.

Evaluation question 7

  • 1. Evaluation Question 7 Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
  • 4. PROGRESSION From my preliminary task, I think my main improvement was learning to use a camera and lighting properly to produce high quality images. When taking the image for my preliminary task I didn’t change any camera settings such as the ISO or aperture, however I used YouTube tutorials whilst producing my final production to learn how to change these settings. I also used tutorials to learn how to effectively edit my images to get the desired effect I wanted from them. I spent a lot more time planning and considering the mise en scene for my final production than I did for my preliminary task. For example, I carefully chose the background I put my models against and the clothes they wore. This showed a clear improvement from my preliminary task as my final production had much higher production values and a lot more thought and attention for detail was applied to it.
  • 5. FONTS I used Photoshop fonts for my preliminary task, but found that dafont.com had a bigger variety of fonts which enabled me to easily fulfil my target audiences wants and needs, I also found that the fonts I downloaded off of dafont.com emphasised the indie genre of my magazine a lot more effectively. I mainly used sans serif fonts in my final production, as it was more appropriate for my audience and was a common convention in the magazines that I researched. In my final production I used the technique of making some words bold, some italic and some in capital letters in order to emphasise and differentiate certain words to my audience.
  • 6. RESEARCH I did a lot more research into my final production than I did my preliminary task, this allowed me to understand and fulfil the cognitive and integrative needs of my target audience. This intensive research also allowed me to view codes and conventions of existing media, making my final production look a lot more professional. I also researched a lot into relevant theories, such as reception theory and uses and gratifications theory. This allowed me to cater a lot for my target audience and it had a big influence on the final outcome, making it more targeting and specific to my audience. Conducted research posted on my blog:
  • 7. LAYOUT I feel that I have significantly improved the layout from my preliminary task, especially for my contents page. By researching existing media and communicating with my focus group, I was able to produce a contents page that suited my target audience’s needs. The use of columns and headings allows my audience to quickly find their category of interest, fulfilling their cognitive and informative needs. I also made my final contents page more image heavy, decreased the size of the font and added a competition and social media section. I did this because stereotypically, the people within my target audience ( young adults ) would prefer more images and less text, and also would appreciate being given the ability to connect with my magazine over social media and keep updated in between issues.
  • 8. I was able to apply my new knowledge from creating my preliminary task, researching existing media and watching tutorials into my double page spread also. I continuously acquired skills in order to improve from my preliminary task to my final production. These skills also helped me to make my double page spread look professional, and also allowed me to fulfil the needs of my target audience.
  • 9. CONCLUSION - In conclusion, the the quality of my final production was greatly improved due to the techniques and theories I learnt along the way. Learning how to operate the canon camera properly and using photoshop to enhance my images made a great impact in the difference between my preliminary task and my final production. - If I hadn’t learnt about these factors, my magazine wouldn’t of had a professional consistency throughout. The research into codes and conventions also heavily impacted the quality of my final production, as without it, I wouldn’t of been able to successfully fulfil my target audience’s wants and needs.
