1. Question 4
Who would be the audience for your media product?
&
Question 5
How did you attract / address your audience?
2. TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience for my magazine is”
- 15- 27 year olds
- Female
- Listen/interested in pop music
Throughout the construction and production of my music magazine I have kept my target
audience in mind and conferred with my focus group as they're within the age/gender of my
target audience, they have given me useful feedback and helped attract / address my particular
audience would want in a magazine.
3. ATTRACTING MY TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience for my magazine is directed towards females.
I tried to appeal to females more than males by using softer more gender specific colours such
as light blue and pink. I stuck with a common convention of using white to make text stand out
without having to use common colours such as red. By using these colours I went against
common conventions of music magazines and drifted towards the similar house styles of fashion
magazines for example Marie Claire or Vogue. The similarity to fashion magazines also helped
my magazine appeal to more feminine audiences rather than male.
Right: Clash magazine
also uses colours that
defies conventions but
their magazine.
Left: Vogue and Marie
Claire.
4. ATTRACTING MY TARGET AUDIENCE - FRONT COVER
I made the front cover image different to other
music magazines as I aimed mine at females
instead of males. Usually it is the fashion
magazines that are aimed at woman, I did this
because I feel like there aren't as many music
magazines that are mainly aimed at females and
there is a gap in the market. Her passive
expression and direct mode of address, with
‘fashionable’ makeup and clothes allows the target
audience to relate to the artist on the magazine
and draw in audiences.
I used pull quotes to attract my target audience as
they create hermeneutic questions and therefore
entices the reader. I also used the word ‘Exclusive’
to attract more readers as it suggests something
will only be found in my magazine and no where
else. I also put it in bold which makes it stand out
against the rest of the text and instantly makes it
one of the first thing your eye is drawn to.
5. ATTRACTING MY TARGET AUDIENCE - CONTENTS PAGE
To draw in more readers and attract my target audiences I
played a competition in there with the biggest letters being ‘win’
and ‘big’ in bold capital letters. This will draw in more readers.
I also added social media usernames along the bottom
attracting the younger part of my target audience as younger
people are more likely to be up to date with social media and
helps them to engage more with the magazine.
By placing words that younger people tend to associate more to
in the contents allows them to gain more of a connection with
the magazine. It creates a sense of comfort maybe drawing
them more in. For example the words ‘apps’, ‘DJ’s’, ‘festivals’
and ‘fashion’.
I also places these words in capitals so they tend to be some of
the first things you see as you read the page.
By using words just as ‘hits’ and ‘exclusive’ it makes it seem
more exciting and shows that it will only be in this magazine.
6. ATTRACTING MY TARGET AUDIENCE - TWO PAGE SPREAD
I put the artist name as the biggest text on the page so it is
one of the first things you see when you look at the page. It
is eye-catching and in a contrasting colour to the picture
giving the same effect. The fact that its the artist name as
well will attract the fans of the artist who would tend to be
the same types of people as my target audience.
I used the word exclusive in a bold colour to again entice audiences.
I used a darker back ground image to contrast with the white on the
other page. I deliberately used direct mode of address to create a
personal relationship between the audience and artist (uses and
gratifications theory).
In the corner I also added a sneak
peak into the artists new album. This
draws in the fans of the artist (my target audience) as it keeps
them updated on the celebrities life.
