1. Evaluation Q2: How does your media product represent a particular social group?
My media product represents and focusses on the indie rock group. My product represents
most indie rock music listeners as average looking white males and females. It is indicated
that my product represents a male audience more than a female audience due to most
images containing male figures. However, one image also has a female in which shows that
is it not completely biased towards a male audience and does not alienate females from
being a part of this indie rock social group. The images used and the overall house style of
the magazine reflects the indie rock image I was aiming to achieve. Looking specifically at
the front cover and DPS being the images that have electric guitars in as they are associated
and related to the indie rock genre. Looking at my contents page images, there a four
different images. One shows a solo artist, one shows what would be the most popular and
well-known individual from a band and one shows a whole band – The way these figures
dress and look represents that the indie rock social group look like average everyday people.
The last image shows a live show which would be relatable to the audience and gives a view
that as a whole, this social group is very interested in and enjoy going to gigs and festivals to
hear live music.
The articles and language I have used tend to have quite a formal tone which would
represent these social groups as quite well educated and intelligent as it is not said how
most people would speak it. The length of the DPS article is also quite long with a lot of
information which implies again that the audience are well educated and quite enjoy
reading. The topics and information focussed on in my contents page and front cover
specifically give the impression that these social groups enjoy reading about and want to be
informed on what bands and artists are doing at that time as most of the topics are focussed
around this. The featured content specifically represents the audience as quite open minded
about what they listen to as there are different types of indie rock music artists and bands
showing that they are open to new music and want to expand their playlist variety
constantly.
