In my questionnaire, I covered a full range of ages which was a good thing. Although, most of the
people that answered my questionnaire were between the ages of 15-20 which could mean my
results may be biased. This means I am going to target my magazine at people who are around
15-20 but no exclude higher ages by having some stories that may be for people between 21-30.
When asking what gender the person was, it seems there may have been an issue as 23/30 people
skipped the question and some give inappropriate answers giving me an unreliable result. I took from this
however that I should not exclude any gender and I will target my audience at both males and females that
have an interest in indie rock music.
In my questionnaire, I covered a wide variety of ethnicities which was good but it seems that most of the
people who answered it was Caucasian which could be considered biased. However, when considering my
location, most people would be of this ethnicity.
When given the choice to pick whoever
they wanted to it seems that popular
bands that were commonly said were:
The 1975, The Courteeners, arctic
monkeys and catfish & the bottlemen.
This means that these bands will be used
within my magazine as many people
seem to enjoy their music. It will also help
me with my coverlines and also with
topics for my feature articles as many
people want to read about these bands
and will be attracted to the magazine if
they were to see them on the cover.
When asked what words they associate the
indie rock music genre people gave many
different answers. After looking at the results I
notice that a reoccurring word was “alternative”.
I am going to use this as the title of my
magazine (masthead) as it is commonly
associated with the indie rock genre.
When asked what colours are associated with the indie rock music genre and what colours they believe
would work well together, the results show that white, black, red and brown were popular amongst the
people answering as the majority voted for them. – I will try to use these colours as a colour scheme for my
magazine. As people seemed to like the colour red getting 13/30 votes I will quite possibly use this colour
for my masthead or for the text on the positioning statement to attract the attention of the audience.
In my questionnaire my question was very biased towards people that buy magazines a lot which is
a bad thing so my results are unreliable as most people do not buy magazines as frequently as I
gave for the options. Due to this, I am going to use my knowledge of how regularly other magazines
similar to mine publish their issues and publish mine fortnightly.
When asked what they like to read about in music magazines it seems that a lot of people (50%) enjoyed
reading about festival/gig information so I will be sure to include a lot of gig reviews and festival tips in my
magazine. Interviews with bands was a popular choice also – I will be sure to include exclusive interviews as
a feature article on my magazine and also make my main article on my DPS a band Q&A in an interview
format.
In my questionnaire, I asked what extras people would like to receive from a music magazine and most
people seemed to say competitions so I will ensure that I include a competition on either my contents page
or advertise it on the front cover in a splash of some sort. As well as this, posters was another popular
choice so I will definitely advertise that there are free posters within my issue of my magazine to create an
incentive to buy the magazine.
When asked what they dislike in music
magazines as a whole, a large majority of the
people said long and boring articles. I will learn
from this and try to include quite short and to
the point features on the front cover and
contents putting the necessary information so
the readers do not get bored of reading my
magazine.
I asked what magazines people currently buy so I could see what type of music people liked and the
majority of people seemed to buy Kerrang! magazine which gives me an indication that people enjoy rock
music. Because of this I will try to make mine include a select few more heavy type of indie rock bands to
appeal to a wider audience range. It could also help me with the design of my front cover and contents
page to make it as appealing as Kerrang! Magazine.
I asked the people in my questionnaire how much they would pay for a music magazine to get a rough
idea of how much I should make the cost of my magazine. I gave a wide variety of prices for the
people to choose from which was good and the results show that most people expect a music
magazine to cost anywhere between £2.00 and £2.50 and also using my own knowledge of the price
of similar magazines I will price my magazine at £2.50 as it is a common price for magazines as well
as being reasonable to the audience.
I asked how often they went to
gigs/festivals as it will show me whether I
can use it as a topic for my magazine
and to include in my contents page as a
feature article. The results show the
majority of people who answered
regularly go to gigs and festivals and
would like to get information on them.
When asked how often people buy magazines it
is common in the results that people do buy
albums whether is be every week or just on
occasions as the results are quite varied. As a
conclusion, I will include album reviews and
advertisements for new albums in my magazine
and possibly on the front cover creating an
incentive to buy my magazine.
I asked people what they would expect to
see within the indie rock music genre as it
could give me an idea of what images
could be used on my front cover and
contents page. Guitars was a popular
answer – I will possibly use a picture of a
guitar or some other instruments as small
images on my front cover and contents
page to make it look less boring and
create the illusion that there is less to
read.
I asked them how many pages they would expect to see giving them a variety of answers which was good.
Most people said 51-70. Taking this into account and using my knowledge from research of other magazines,
I will ensure my magazine stays between this amount of pages as it is what readers expect and what is
common in a lot of similar magazines.
I finally asked if they would prefer a more formal or informal style of writing so I could get an idea of how to write
my stories and articles. It seems that they prefer both an informal and a formal style of writing so I will ensure that I
include some elements of formal text (most likely on the DPS for the band Q&A) and then the front cover and
contents can use a less formal style to make it look more appealing and less boring.
