Question 2 – How does your media
product represent particular social
groups?
Who my target social group is
• My target social group is 16-24 British Male
and Female indie rock fans
Photographs
The photographs used represent my target audience because they are all
of younger artists which are appropriate for my magazines target
audience. They are well lit so the artist is easily visible and all use direct
address to capture and maintain my audience’s attention. The images
convey indie rock as a genre for young people, as all the artists used in
the photos are between the age of 16 and 18. Furthermore, my photos
convey an image of music which makes them relevant to my magazine
and target audience because of the positioning, clothing and angles
used. The clothing used is of a dark colour to represent the genre of
indie rock and guitars are featured in some of my photos which is
synonymous with indie rock and music. This shows the photos are
anchored to the genre of the magazine. The settings used in my front
cover image is an industrial scene which conveys an edgy style which is
effective and relevant for my genre and conveys attitude. This represents
the genre as stylish and aimed more at young people such as those in my
target age range of 16-24. In addition to this, I used natural settings for 2
photos on my contents page for the same reason. For the other 2 images
on my contents page I used studio settings to convey a stylish look which
represents my young target audience.
Fonts
Fonts used are easily legible and convey a stylish and
simple look, this represents my audience as the fonts
used convey a modern and young look. An example
of this is my masthead which is embossed to make it
stand out and look stylish.
My main cover line is in a broken font which is
anchored to the industrial background and
grungy/indie look to my front cover, which is offset by
the stylish fonts used in the rest of my front cover to
create a young look.
My choice of colour scheme (red, white and black) is
bright and attractive to both males and females. I
have achieved this by using colours popular with both
sexes rather than using colours synonymous with one
sex such as the colour pink with females.
Language
The language used within my magazine is appropriate to
my target audience of 16 – 24-year-old British males and
females, this is because the language used is simple and
easy to understand. It features some relevant slang in
places where appropriate, these being words my target
audience can understand and are relevant and
representative of them. Some music jargon is used which
shows my audience is educated and understands the
genre of indie rock music and that they are interested in
it. This shows my social group that my magazine is aimed
at them which encourages them to read it.
Articles are written in an informal style, again to make
them easily understandable and easy to read which
encourages my social group to read it.
Features
The bands featured are representative of young
indie rock fans who are interested in their music.
The gig guide section represents readers as
enjoying visiting gigs and seeing bands live
because of their interest in indie rock music.
