I learned several new techniques in Photoshop, including how to manually focus a camera and import fonts. I also gained experience using Quark to create double page spreads. Through completing this magazine project myself rather than as part of a team, I took on many roles and learned the significant work involved in production. Some specific skills I learned were how to manipulate image size in Photoshop, import pictures and resize them, create text boxes, insert drop caps and line breaks. For my blog evaluating this project, I used PowerPoint, Prezi and videos to make it visually interesting and go into depth on topics.

The student created a cover for a music magazine using Photoshop. They succeeded in following conventions like using a masthead font related to the genre and including bands their target audience would like. Their design improved from their initial sketch. They learned to use Photoshop with minimal teacher help to create a relatively professional product. Their weakness was time management, as they struggled to finish in the allotted time. Moving layers and making the masthead disappear behind the cover star were the most difficult elements. Since their preliminary task, the student has become more confident using Photoshop through repetition. They better understand conventions and can structure covers to suit audiences.
Results and conclusions
The survey results showed that the magazine appealed to its target audience of 16-25 year old females. 81% of respondents correctly identified the genre, and most felt the cover image, colors, and fonts were appealing. The cover star was seen as tying in with the magazine's indie style. Layout, articles, colors and fonts on interior pages were also well-liked. The article provided information, and colors and images were engaging. Consistent color schemes linked pages. Most felt the price was fair. The front cover was seen as the most professionally designed part of the magazine.

This led to a vast improvement where the music magazine contents page and cover were more visually pleasing and used typography, color, and images purposefully according to their intended impact. The quality of my work increased as I learned to plan shoots and utilize the page space efficiently to tell a story through my magazine's presentation.

- 1. It is very clear that my understanding of codes and conventions has dramatically developed throughout the process of constructing my magazine front cover. I have made my best attempts to use the conventions correctly to produce a more realistic magazine with more appealing and most importantly more accurate features. Obvious features of the front cover that have improved would be the masthead in which it is in its own font and colour so it stands out above the other text which the college magazine does not do. It is also positioned better in which it all goes across the page instead of being on two separate lines making it a more dominant feature. The coverlines are also positioned correctly in which they frame the main image, are the correct size and are separated through colour due to the importance of the words, all of which the college magazine does not do. This makes for a much intriguing cover overall as the coverlines entice the audience making them want more information. The barcode on my music magazine is another feature that was been correctly used as it is a much smaller and correct size than the one on my college magazine – this also applies to the price of the magazine as codes and conventions have been followed making it much smaller as it should be. The splash is a feature that has improved massively in terms of how the conventions in terms of its size and overall look as it is much more appealing and takes us less space which means it follows all codes and conventions. The splash on the college magazine is too large and is also an ineffective/impractical as it takes up too much space whilst also being positions completely wrong. The positioning statement is the correct size on the music magazine and is much easier to see and read being a better colour scheme. The background of the music magazine also allowed my coverlines to stand out much more making them easier to see and read intriguing the audience more as it requires less effort from them to read it. I also included all codes and conventions that I did not on the college magazine like the main coverline and the skyline showing how my understanding of codes and conventions has improved.

Features that have obviously improved and developed would be that I have included certain codes and convention that I did not previously. For example, the issue number and issue date both are included correctly doing what they are meant to and are positioned in the right place. The images used are much more organised and give the page a better structure than the college magazine page creating a column like structure rather than being tilted. The text is much more correct in which is a lot smaller and has article headings as well as small bits of information enticing the reader more. The page numbers are a separate colour to the text making them stand out more and makes the page a lot easier to navigate through – it also makes the information much easier to find as the numbers are more dominant. The colour scheme is much more effective and looks much more appealing following the 2-3 colours and the rest of the codes and conventions. The categories are much more organised as well as much more information beign available to give the audience a much better idea of what is in the magazine.
