1. My Target audience’ demographics and the Indie genre
My group and I chose our final genre based on our research findings which included
questionnaires and internet research. Cds in the music industry are heavily declining as
a result artist are doing their best to promote and sell their own music via internet, live
tours, promotional adverts and most importantly through their music videos. One of the
genres which there artist have been subjected to this way of business is the Indie genre.
The indie genre is a genre that is diversified. The artist which work under this genre
have mostly done their own self-promotion with barley any of them making music
videos however according to our questionnaire the Indie genre is incredibly popular
with 15 to 21 year olds. As mostly students either high school or university students
they are a very independent age this relates to the Indie genre as the Indie genre
embodies ‘independent freedom’. The word "indie" comes from the word
"independent". A lot of students embody this theme as it gives a sense of freedom not
being tied down by the expectations of society or from peer pressure to dress, eat, act
behave in a certain why indie music and the whole indie genre allows ‘you to be you’
and to be comfortable being you. "Indie" is an entire subculture of clothing and movies
that is rapidly becoming the new style for high school to university students nationwide.
If we were to sell our product it is likely that it would sell to this age group with most
being students not having any other priorities and reasonability’s like working adults do
will have the disposable income to buy this product especially with this emerging and
upcoming genre approaching the scenes.
The word "indie" comes from the word "independent" which refers to lesser-known
music labels, low-budget films and a free-spirited style of clothing. The style began in
the late 1970's, but has recently been revived to represent an entire culture of people
who describe themselves as the anti-conformists of the mainstream.
With this genre being low- budget is hard to compose an idea based on other artist
interpretations. We as a group will find it hard to compare ideas as finding an well-
known Indie music video is unlikely. Although this seems to be an issue we as a group
have been given the opportunity to be original taking into consideration the theme of
independence and freedom in which the indie genre embodies.
