EVALUATION QUESTION 2 – HOW DOES YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR
SOCIAL GROUPS?
• When doing research for my product I knew I wanted to
appeal to a rock audience aged 16-25, which needed to
be seen in my product.
This is an example of the
look I was trying to go for
when taking my main image
• When taking my photo for my front
cover I knew that the image had to
ensure it captured the rock look
although it can be seen as more of a
metal look.
• I knew I wanted to have my model to
have a brooding look with black
clothing and a guitar to capture that
rocker look which my audience
would immediately notice. The long,
straightened hair that my modal had
is also a hairstyle used by many
modern rock artists, which would
stand out to my desired social group.
The emphasis on the brooding facial
expression can show how the artist
is feeling on the inside representing
some of the darker themes which
appear in rock music.
• The bands that I have included on the front cover also appeal to the
rock/indie scene and with the slight inclusion of a couple indie bands would
increase the circulation the magazine would initially get.
• With my contents page I did want a professional look to it but also ensure it
would still appeal to the targeted age group and music scene so I made
sure there were a variety of different article titles, which would keep the
magazine interesting.
• The colour scheme for Unplugged is influenced by Q but represents the
same age group so adopting the colour scheme to keep the design eye
catching as most of the youth today judge a magazine by its front cover.
• The photos on my contents page are to further demonstrate the rock feel by
having a group of people pose for the band on which the article is based
upon and to give the audience an idea of what the band looked like to show
the rock/indie style of the band. Another one of the photos was to look at the
camera and use the well-recognised rock symbol to further the rock feel for
my targeted social group. I also had her wear a black leather jacket to keep
with the rock look and have “alcohol” to give a carefree attitude, which is
associated with rock music.
• I have also included social media links as young people use social
media the majority of the time in this modern age. It would also
make the magazine consistent with the big multi-platform brands. It
also helps the magazine maintain its circulation in the marketplace.
The social media links appear on every page to ensure that the my
target audience sees them.
• In the article, the mode of address was informal as the
conversation was to feel normal to the reader. This gives
the audience the idea the article is more interesting than
other articles, which would be in other magazines. In the
article slang terms and informal language were used to
make it seem like the band were relaxed and spoke like
they would speak to a friend. This also helps with the
relaxed rock lifestyle and can seem relatable to the
targeted social group.
