The document discusses the technologies used and lessons learned during the process of creating a film opening. In the research phase, websites like IMDb, box office records, and the UK Film Council were used to research target audiences and successful films in the genre. YouTube was used to watch sample film openings. During construction, the author learned how to use a new camera, microphone, editing software, Photoshop, and lighting equipment. Editing in Movie Studio Platinum involved adding filters, brightness adjustments, and integrating narration. For evaluation, Prezi, Word, Powtoon, Blogger, and PowerPoint were used to analyze the opening and examples from other films. Overall, a wide range of software, websites, and equipment

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Evaluation 6
1. Evaluation 6
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
2. I will analysing three different parts of the film opening task. I will be
assessing everything that I learnt in the technology aspect when it
came to:
- Research and Planning
- Construction
- Evaluation
Throughout the presentation I will be saying what I learnt in this
process and the technology that was used.
3. Research and Planning
In order to put ourselves in a better position when it came to the research. We had to look at the IMDb and the
box office to identify what kind of films succeeded in our genre and what ones did not work. We also used the
UK Film Council in order to find out the target audience that we were going to focusing on when creating our
film. This helped us a lot as if we did not use these websites then we would not have the opportunity to have a
target audience for our film opening meaning that our film would not have the correct messages getting sent
across and our film would not generate as much money in the box office. In addition to this, we also watched a
lot of films in our genre to get a feel on what they are like and collect the mise en scene. Furthermore, we used
the website YouTube in order to watch multiple film openings in the crime/drama genre in order to ensure that
ours would be similar to it in order to keep it as professional as possible. The good thing with IMDb and
YouTube is that I had already used them so I knew what I was when it came to browsing the sites whereas, I
had never used the uk film council before but I felt as though there was no learning curve there and it was easy
to browse on.
4. Construction
Before the beginning of filming, I had never used this camera that we used. So, I had to learn by doing a lot of
practice shots and experimenting with different settings and focuses etc. and I feel like this aided me when it
came to filming to film opening. However, I had a little bit of experience of using something very similar to
Movie Studio Platinum (Sony Vegas Pro) so I only had to ensure that I knew the basics of this new software and
I felt as though I was very accustomed to it after a while of experience. We started to have narration in our film
opening so that meant that we had to record the narration with a microphone. We did not know how to use
this piece of equipment so it meant that we needed to learn by doing a lot of practice takes ensuring that we
knew what distance away we had to have the microphone. In order to ensure that we all were doing
something during the construction process, we allocated jobs to people. I was in charge of doing the narration
so I familiarised myself with the microphone during this process. We used a light box in order to create the
correct lighting when we entered the inside and that there were no inconsistencies. After the recording
process, we used Movie Studio Platinum in order to put the clips that we filmed, together. We used various
transitions and cuts in which we put Amy in charge of because she was a good editor in our group. We also had
to experiment with different filters and brightness settings in which we all decided on. We had to add the
filters and brightness levels to the inside clips as there were lighting in consistencies at some parts. This was
easily fixed and I feel as though this was something that we all learnt how to do over the period of the editing
stage. As we also recorded narration which was needed to put in after the filming. We unanimously decided
that the pitch needed to be lowered in order to make the character sound more dominating and scary In
addition to being in charge of the sound, I also had the responsibility of doing the studio logo on Photoshop as
I had the experience from doing multiple pictures for my Artwork meaning that I knew how to create a decent
looking logo for the Studio. We decided on the idea of the guns and the communist star because we felt as
though it was fitting with the themes of the film.
5. Evaluation
In the duration of the evaluation process, we used multiple forms of technology (software). Overall I
used:
- Prezi
- Word
- Powtoon
- Blogger
- Powerpoint
Before this, I had already used Powerpoint , Word and Prezi meaning that I was already okay with using it
as I was confident with how to use everything on the pieces of software. This was easier because I had
already used them in the preliminary task and the research of the film opening. I was somewhat familiar
with Powtoon as it was very similar to Google slides which is something that I have used before in
another project. This meant that I just had to adjust to the different layout. They all allowed to me to add
pictures and video evidence of my film opening and examples of other films which was usually done with
YouTube. It was time consuming when trying to look for more multimedia to evaluate my film opening
with however but, in researching and using different websites it showed that I was able to use a wide
variety of multimedia.
6. Overall
Overall, these were all of the pieces of technology that I used over the film opening process:
• Camera
• Microphone
• Box Office
• Photoshop
• Slideshare
• Google
• YouTube
• IMDb
• Powtoon
• Word
• Powerpoint
• Prezi
• Blogger
• Movie Studio Platinum
And in using these, it meant that I was able to develop my skills in preparation for the next year (A2) and that I was able to use a range of multimedia.
