We learned how to use various technologies throughout the process of creating our horror film opening sequence project. We used Tumblr to document our progress, Slideshare to embed documents, different cameras and sound equipment for filming, YouTube for research and finding audio clips, and Premiere Pro for editing. In Premiere Pro we learned skills like layering audio, adjusting volume, adding video effects, sequencing footage, including titles, and exporting the final video. We also uploaded and shared our finished opening sequence on YouTube, and used it to get feedback and make improvements.

What have you learnt about technologies from the
process of constructing this product?

2.  Throughout creating our main task, we came across
the use of many technologies which we had to gain a
knowledge of to create a successful final piece.
Throughout the research stages, we had to gain a
knowledge in order to get around YouTube and Art of
the title to analyse opening sequence, this was to
gain an understanding in the common conventions of
an horror opening sequences. Throughout all stages
we had to use Tumblr to represent each stage of
creating our final piece. Throughout filming we’d use
different cameras and sound equipment to improve
from our preliminary task. Throughout editing we
used editing programmes such as Premier Pro.

3. Tumblr:
Tumblr was used to represent each stage of creating our main task, with the use of
blog posts we’d update it with our progress throughout researching, planning,
production and evaluating in order to represent the making of our opening sequence.
Within our tumblr posts, you can post
in many different formats such as
text, link to videos and embedding
word documents etc. This means we
have the features we need to present
all of our work, within our work we
would post videos, surveys and link
them in, text posts and the use of
slideshare to share word documents
or powerpoints through embedding
them.

4. Slideshare
Another website I came
familiar with was
‘Slideshare’. Within this
website you can upload
word documents or
powerpoints and embed
them into your tumblr
post. I used this a lot
when planning to present
my work as the majority
of it was computer files.

5.  We used a different camera than our preliminary
task, this was because in our preliminary we
didn’t gain the camera shots we really wanted.
With the new camera we learnt how to gain a
short or long depth of field which we took full
advantage of in order to keep the focus on
either the main character of the surroundings
when appropriate.

• We also changed it in order to change the focus within
shots which we believe worked well. With the last
camera we used we didn’t get our full bearings with it
before using it therefore our filming wasn’t to the
level we wanted to be. So with our new camera we
made use we learned the basics in order to create the
effects we needed to.

6.  In our preliminary task we became familiar with a boom pole and a
microphone. As we felt like the sound quality from the sound equipment
wasn’t suited to our main task idea, we choose not to use a microphone
and no dialogue, instead we used the sound from the camera itself as it
was hi-tech and we included non-diegetic music and a voiceover. We
recorded the voiceover just on a phone as it gave the quality we were
looking for and we have the knowledge of how to then upload it onto
the computer and into our editing programme.
Sound
We came across a feature of youtube
called audio library where you could
find songs or sound effects to go into
the background of a video made. We
chose to use this feature and
searched for a horror genre, we
found a music clip which was suitable
and learned where we could find
certain features from youtube.

7.  Premier Pro was the program we used to edit and
create our final footage. We also used this for our
preliminary task so we had an understanding of how
to use it and what it includes. We had to upload our
raw footage and put it into a sequence to then be
ready to edit. We used many features of it such as:

8. Layering
Layering was one of
skills we learned in
order to put non-
diegetic music in, a
voiceover and how
we include the titles
throughout the
opening sequence.

9. Changing the volume
Especially in a horror
genre, volume is
very important.
Therefore we learnt
how to increase the
volume at tense
times and how to
decrease the volume
of the main track so
it doesn’t overpower
the footage and the
voiceover.

10. Changing the features of the footage
In parts of editing we used a
video effects in order to create
black and white footage to
keep to the conventions of
flashbacks.
We also learnt how to fade
from black and white to colour
in order to go from flashbacks
to present.

11. Putting sequence into order
One of the simplest
things we had to
know during editing
was how to upload
raw footage and put
it into order. From
this screenshot it
shows the order of
our footage and on
the far left shows our
raw footage that we
need to include into
the sequence.

12. Titles
One of the main things
we needed to know to
create for our opening
sequence was the use
of titles and how to
include them and
make sure you chose
the right fonts to keep
it consistent. This
screenshot shows the
extra tab you need in
order to do this.

13. Exporting
After we finished
the editing of our
opening sequence,
we learnt how to
export it into a
video format as
seen in this
screenshot.

14.  When we thought our opening
sequence was at the standard we
wanted, we exported it from premier
and uploading it to YouTube. Using
YouTube as our broadcasting site, I
learnt how to import clips, embed clips
and knew the main features of the site.
After uploading our final piece we
noticed we had made a mistake, from
this we learnt how to delete clips and
re-upload when we fixed the problem.
We kept some of the rough copies to
show our progression. We also used
YouTube whilst researching the
conventions of our genre and
conventions of an opening sequence to
decide whether to stick to them or
challenge them. YouTube was also
used in planning, for our animatic.
