Phoenix Jackson: Rising from the Ashes Many authors incorporate mythological creatures in stories to
represent the virtues and vices of their lead characters. Eudora Welty s character Phoenix Jackson
symbolizes resurrection in A Worn Path, and therefore identifies with the legendary phoenix. The
Encyclopedia Britannica describes the phoenix, as large as an eagle, with brilliant scarlet and gold
plumage and a melodious cry. Only one phoenix existed at any time, and it was very long lived, and at
the end of the bird s lifespan it would catch fire for a new phoenix to rise from the ashes ( phoenix ).
Phoenix Jackson is an old Negro woman that is making a difficult journey including both physical and
mental challenges; she overcomes these trials as a result of her unconditional love for her grandson

Her skin is described as having, a pattern all its own of numberless branching wrinkles and as though
a whole little tree stood in the middle of her forehead which is indicative of her old age (Welty 314).
Phoenix is also strong and courageous like the phoenix making a trip that is difficult for her physical
condition, but she endures the journey to help comfort her grandson. The physical appearance of the
phoenix is merged into the main character and, the aspect of rebirth is mentioned at the end of story.
Phoenix is paralyzed with exhaustion and unable to speak after her long trip until the nurse mentions
her grandson then, a flicker and then a flame comes across her face; she is reborn and able to make the
trip back to her beloved grandson. Phoenix Jackson rises up against all the odds for the person she
loves the most, and proves true love does conquer

Basketball Sports Research Paper
Basketball isn t the only thing that our school is good at. Recently our Journalism class had the chance
to interview our school s Dance Team. This special group of girls including, Veronica Mass, Julia
Neal, Caitlyn Roque, Alyssa Guzman, and Jasmine Gonzales also won national competitions. They
can often be seen performing at half time of our school s basketball games. We are truly special to be
able to have two national champs on the court in one night. Being this successful is not easy though.

Tunneling In The Trenches
The first world war was very revolutionary, it was said to be the war to end all wars, mostly in part
because of all the new weapons and techniques to fight. Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United
States against Germany, Austria Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. The war began in the
summer of 1914 after a Serbian terrorist shot and killed the archduke of Austria Hungary, it would not
end until November of 1918. It was the biggest war of it s and was thought to be the last war that
mankind would go through, and that there would be world peace afterward. Ironically that was not the

For this, each side would dig trenches and soldiers would stay in there for months on end. Every
country had their own techniques that they liked and preferred to use. Due to this, battles were
extremely deadly as one never knew what was going to happen that the other side had planned. One of
the deadliest techniques being tunneling. It was a very advanced tactic that could take months or even
years to perfect. The idea behind it was if you were on a battlefield and fighting against someone, you
would dig a tunnel underground from your area to theirs. After the tunnel was built, explosives were
placed in the tunnel and then later blown up to kill the enemy. Along with weapons, tactics had a big
role in World War One. All in all, World War I was a bloody and revolutionary war that would change
the way countries would combat. Even now we still use many of the same weapons, just more
advanced to today s standards. Although this war was truly detrimental to the economies of many
