How To The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum
I went to the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum for my art experience project. I was
impressed with the amount of statues I was able to see in one place. A majority of them seem to have
been created and donated by the Fredericks family themselves. As I said before the amount of statues
in this little space is impressive, however my first impression is the feeling of claustrophobia.
The statues are packed in fairly tight and the space overall doesn t seem to be well utilized. The room
it was in did however provide an ample amount of natural light from the large windowed wall to the
north. This coupled with the recessed lighting did a good job of lighting the statues facing the northern
wall. Unfortunately though, some of the statues are facing the southern wall and lose a little detail to
not being as well lit from only the recessed lighting. The contrast between well lit and dimly lit does
lend to contrast in light and shadow for the statues facing the east and west walls. The contours of
these statues are much more defined because of the line of contrast so they seem to draw me in the
most. I also get this cold feeling, even though the floors are more of a warm/neutral color. I believe
this is due to the lack of a large amount of the statues not being colored at all. The few that are colored
are just antiqued bronze so they are mostly that powder blue/green color. The lack of color though, I
feel, is intended to make a point.

Few advancements in human history have made more impact on our modern world than the industrial
revolution. Coupled with this leap in industry, imperialism defined the economic political and social
structure across the globe. Essentially the industrial revolution defined the means, while imperialism
dictated who would have eventual control. H.G Wells explores both imperialism and the industrial
revolution by taking them to extremes, and through his satire reflects the specific flaws of both
processes as they changed the world around him.

The role of ethics in imperialism is also questioned. The Martians seem to have no ethical or moral

the Martians (Wells, 1898, p.20). The notion that the Martians would be unable to move under earth s
gravity was also simply accepted by the humans (Wells, 1898, p20). By presenting the reactions to the
invasion in this manner, Wells is commenting on a society that has grown complacent and too self

and his life as a slave. Throughout the book Narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglass , it documents
his life and how his views on freedom and slavery change throughout the book. His views on freedom
evolve constantly throughout the book due to the different slave masters that owned him. Fredrick was
born into slavery and at a very young age he was separated from his mother. His mother was Harriet
Bailey and he suspected his father to be a white man. His slave master was Captain Anthony, who was
a cruel man. Under his first master he was too young to work in the field like most of the slaves so he
stayed at home. With him staying at home, he managed to escape the punishments faced by most of
the slaves on Captain Anthony s plantation. However, he did not manage to go unharmed completely.
While there, he witnessed many of the harsh, oppressive realities of slavery. He manages to recall
these events with great detail, despite being young. I believe events such as these can have a lifelong
impact on a young mind.
In the documentation of his early life, his views on slavery are not directly expressed. I think this is in
part because he was too young to know any different. While his early life did not offer much opinion
